Derry’s Roasters was filled with several loyal patrons on this warm afternoon, scattered and occupying a handful of tables and bar stools. Most of them were too engrossed with their own tasks—reading the newspaper or typing on their laptop—while letting the sweet aroma of coffee inspire ideas that were brewing in their minds.
The large windows gave them access to the outside world; showcasing the clouds and sun that were playing hide and seek. Autumn leaves were fluttering lazily to the cold ground, acting like nature’s confetti—painting the gushing wind with crimson red, honey gold, and the occasional purple.
Soon after, the friendly barista took their attention, as she served the piping hot drinks on their table. One black coffee for Ethan, two cappuccinos for the Bisognin siblings—sitting right across him, keen eyes observing his every move.
“So,” Rob brows furrow with curiosity, stealing a quick glance at his sister before continuing. “Any reason as to why Chi is not here with us yet?”
The million dollar question has arrived.
In the handful times that they have met, Marchia would always be there with him, arranging their schedules and catching up her siblings. So, Ethan knew that both Robert and Eleanor were rather clueless regarding the purpose of this spontaneous get-together; the puzzled look on their face says it all.
“Two reasons,” he answered, schooling his features with trained expertise. “First, she’s finishing some paperwork, so she will join us in thirty minutes. Second, I have something that I would like to discuss with both of you.”
He briefly paused at that statement, thoughts fumbling down.
There was something nerve-wracking about informing two of the most important people in Marchia’s life that he, a man who once fled from his own feelings to the Amazon and broke her heart, wanted to tie the knot to their youngest sister.
Taking a deep breath, he uttered, “I want to marry Marchia.”
They stared at him in stunned silence, speechless.
This was the first time he said it out loud, the finality in his words hanging between them like a pendulum. His throat tightened painfully as anticipation built up in his stomach; heart clamoring turbulently at his ears. In an instant, he attempted to suppress the whirlwind of emotion that threatened to tear him apart.
Very carefully, Eleanor straightened herself in her seat.
“That’s fantastic news!” she declared after a moment, plastering a cheerful smile on her face. “Sorry, we were worried for a second there. We thought you were going to deliver some bad news.”
Rob humored him with a chuckle. Warmly, he continued, “Yeah, that intimidating, cold face of yours is not helping either.”
“I take it that you’re—” he stopped himself, pausing a beat to find the right words. “Fine with my plan, then?”
“Fine?” she turned to gaze at her brother, a look of bewilderment etched all over her face. “Hell, we’re a lot more than that, Ramsey!”
“We’re extremely happy for you guys, truly.”
Before he knew it, a sigh of relief escaped Ethan. He gave in to the sense of ease that washed over him, shoulders feeling lighter somehow. A tiny bloom of joy unfurled in his chest as he took in the pleasant responses from Eleanor and Robert.
“So, did you have the ‘talk’ yet? With her?”
Ethan blinked back to attention. “The... talk?”
“You know, the whole conversation where you can ask her if she really wants to get married? Does she even wants to get tied up? Or if you guys would like to have kids in the future, or whether you guys still want to stay in Boston or move to a different city? Something like that?”
Everything around him came to a screeching halt.
A part of him was impressed by this confident, sanguine side of himself—utterly sure that Marchia wants to get married with him, that he does not even bother to ask her opinion and point of view first. On the other hand, another part of him wanted to smack his own face for being entirely heedless regarding the gravity of the situation.
He was going to ask her to marry him, for God’s sake. Not to buy sushi takeouts or plan a vacation to the Bahamas.
“Unfortunately, I...” he returned, rubbing the back of his neck. “I haven’t had the chance yet.”
Well, fuck.
Not only that Ethan felt completely stupid in this exact moment—embarrassing himself in front of his future in-laws—but he also loathed the way he turned into one of those bumbling, clueless imbeciles that could not get their answers straight.
This is uncharted territory, after all, and while Ethan is a critically acclaimed diagnostician and the Chief of Medicine in one of the most prestigious teaching hospital in the country, he certainly does not have a PhD in marriage and nuptials.
Fighting the urge to pinch the bridge of his nose, he redirected his gaze to meet them once again—though still unsure of what else to say. To his surprise, however, he was greeted with the sight of the Bisognin siblings fighting a laugh that threatened to break across their faces.
“We’re just messing with you!” Rob cracked into a light chuckle, reaching across the table to pat his shoulder. “You know she’s crazy about you, right?”
The wicked smile on Eleanor’s countenance gave away the same message.
“You can ask her to run ten thousand miles across the desert, and Chia would totally do it. For you.”
Beneath his torso, a small set of fireworks goes off—rushing to burst into his heart. Given the chance, Ethan would do anything for her, too.
“Just take care of her, will you?” Eleanor asked sincerely.
Her eyes blinked to the side, trying to hide the ever-growing—hopefully, happy—tears that was ready to stream down. For a split second, Ethan realized that he never really experienced this kind of love and compassion before; the unparalleled bond they share since the day were born, looking out and taking care each other throughout their lives, no matter what happens.
Half of his mouth turned up, and he replied, “I will.”
As their dazzling orbs shimmer with sheer joy and pride, Robert sprung from his seat. His long arms spread apart and in an instant, he had taken Ethan as his hostage in a loving embrace.
“Welcome to the family, Ramsey.”

Use a Credit Freeze to Stop Identity Thieves Cold
Its been just over six months since the now infamous Equifax data breach of 2017. To refresh your memory, this massive data breach potentially exposed the personal information of some 145.5 million U.S. consumers. The exposed data included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth. Of course, the Equifax data breach is not the only reason you need to be concerned about the security of your personal information. While Equifaxs massive hack was understandably upsetting to consumers, its certainly not the only data breachthat may have put your personal information at risk. The disturbing truth is that nearly 1,600 data breaches were announced publicly in 2017 alone, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center. The need to protect your credit from identity thieves only becomes more important with each passing year. Thankfully there are a number of actions you can and should take to protect your personal information and your credit from bad guys. And of all the credit protection strategies out there, the most effective one by far is a credit freeze especially when you suspect your personal data has been compromised. How a Credit Freeze Protects You According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, your credit reports can be accessed by anyone whos deemed to have a permissible purpose to request them that includes lenders who wish to view your reports as part of an application for new credit. The trouble for lenders is that they cant easily tell if its you whos applying for a new loan or credit card or a crook whos fraudulently applying for financing in your name. A credit freeze, also called a security freeze, can help to solve this problem. When you place a freeze on your credit reports, you essentially lock your reports so that new lenders cannot access them without your consent. Unlike a fraud alert, which lasts for 90 days and simply requires businesses to verify your identity before issuing new credit to you, a credit freeze essentially takes your credit reports out of circulation until you say otherwise. If youve placed a freeze on your three credit reports and an identity thief tries to open a fraudulent account in your name, the lender who attempts to process the phony application wouldnt be able to access your credit report; theyll get a message back that your report has been frozen. As a result, the application will be denied, preventing the fraudulent account from being opened. The thief may still be in possession of your personal data, but your credit freeze will prevent them from using that data against you to open unauthorized accounts. How to Freeze Your Credit Placing a freeze on your credit reports is simple and inexpensive. The quickest way to request a freeze is online, though you have the option to freeze your reports over the phone or via mail as well. If you do opt to freeze your credit reports, its also important that you do so separately at each of the three major credit reporting agencies: Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. If you neglect to freeze your credit with all three bureaus, youll still be vulnerable. Below are some links to help you get started putting your credit reports on ice at each credit bureau: Equifax Credit FreezeYou can freeze your credit with Equifax here. In the wake of their massive data breach, Equifax is waiving any fees on credit freezes through June 2018.TransUnion Credit FreezeTo freeze your credit with TransUnion, start here. TransUnion also allows a less intensive credit lock, which you can turn on and off in real time online.Experian Credit FreezeFreeze or thaw your Experian credit reportshere. Once you place a freeze on your credit reports, youll be issued or be asked to choose a PIN. Remember to save all three of your PINs, because you will need them in the future to thaw your reports when you wish to apply for credit yourself or in any other situation where someone will need to access your credit reports. In some states, a credit freeze expires after seven years, but in most cases, it lasts until you request the freeze to be lifted. Depending on your situation, you may be required to pay a fee to both place AND lift a credit freeze. Fees can vary per state, but they generally fall between $3 and $10. Thats a small price to pay to avoid identity theft, especially if you believe your data has been compromised. And if youve already been a victim of identity theft (and have a police report to prove it), then placing and lifting a credit freeze can be done free of charge. Related Articles: John Ulzheimeris an expert on credit reporting, credit scoring, andidentity theft. He has written fourbooks on the topic and has beeninterviewed and quoted thousands of times over the past 10 years. Withtime spent at Equifax and FICO, Ulzheimer is the only credit expert whoactually comes from the credit industry. He has been an expert witnessin over 230 credit related lawsuits and has been qualified to testify inboth federal and state courts on the topic of consumer credit. https://www.thesimpledollar.com/credit-freeze/
