Early December, 1894

It was a rather cold and rainy winter’s night on the 10th of December. Evaline was nearing the end of her pregnancy soon, and spent most of the days bedridden until she would give birth. It left Walter with the responsibility of taking care of the farm, the animals and their son. Though Salvatore proved to be a very mind tempered boy, often trying his best to help his father in whatever chores needed to be taken care of.

It was after a long day of such tasks that Walter decided to read a book before heading off to bed. The rhythmic drips of rain helped ease him into a state of relaxation, his fingers flipping through the pages, hoping sleep would soon overtake his consciousness.

Upstairs, Evaline laid in bed, sleeping mindlessly as the minutes passed by. That was, until she felt a sharp pain hit her right in her stomach. Sitting up with a jolt, Evaline swung her legs off the bed to stand, ready to call for her husband when her waters instantly leaked down her nightdress, pooling on the floorboards.

“Walter!” She yelled as the first wave of agony struck her.

He was at her side in an instant, worry washed all over his face at the sight of his wife. Evaline sucked through her teeth, “My labors have started, ah-! The baby is coming.”

And so the birthing process began. With each new flutter of pain, Evaline began to feel that ever familiar feeling of dread creep up on her. The memories of her mother pushed through to the front of her mind, achingly reminding her of the night she died. She could still remember her mother’s cries, the shrieks and wails of suffering that rung in her ears for months after. It terrified her as a girl and it haunted her still.

Yet she couldn’t think of such things, at least not with Walter anyway. He shushed and soothed her, reminding her that she had already been through this before. Salvatore was alive and healthy and so was she, and so too would this baby be. Gradually his wife’s mind eased as she grew closer to birth. 

After just two pushes, Evaline had given birth to another baby, another boy! His tiny cries filled the room as he came into the world, Walter laughing at the sight of another son in his arms. He kissed her as tears ran down her cheeks.

“He will be called Victor,” Walter concluded while the boy was cradled in his arms. He hadn’t noticed that Evaline had fallen back onto the bed, another intense pressure of pain hitting her again.

Something wasn’t right. Evaline could swear she felt the need to push again. “Walter,” she hissed through her teeth.

“Mi amor, what’s wrong?” He set Victor on the far end of the bed as Evaline opened her legs once again. He could see another head. Another baby.

The second child came just as quickly as the first to shell shocked parents. After a few moments of staring in awe at the twins in their bedroom, the couple saw that the second twin was a girl. 

The twins were named Victor Francis and Rosalind Marie Mendoza.

What more can we say about Mary that has not been said already? Well I have dug up a few little known facts about the lady.

Mary used to wash her face with white wine; it helped keep her alabaster complexion, which was the height of fashion at the times, in perfect order. The use of such fine tipple to keep the wrinkles at bay was a source of constant consternation to her English keepers the Earl of Shrewsbury and his overbearing wife, Bess of Hardwick, who were forced to foot the bill for most of the upkeep of their ‘guest’ while she resided in England at Elizabeth’s ‘pleasure’.

Still on the subject of her time in England, whilst she was in the custody of the Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife Bess of Hardwick, Mary fell out with Bess big time; Bess apparently became convinced that her husband had more than just a soft spot for the captive Queen of Scots. To get back at Bess for besmirching her name Mary wrote what has come to be called ‘The Scandal Letter’ to Elizabeth I, detailing all the dubious titbits of gossip Bess had told her over their sewing sessions.

According to what Mary had heard from Bess, Elizabeth thought herself so beautiful that she couldn’t be looked upon directly; her ladies-in-waiting would frequently find themselves convulsed with laughter at having to maintain this fiction; also that Elizabeth was sexually insatiable and had pursued one of her favourite courtiers, Christopher Hatton, and secured his favours in a threesome; and finally, and perhaps more mysteriously, that Elizabeth ‘wasn’t like other women’, perhaps physically or in some other way. Sir William Cecil, Elizabeth’s secretary of state (later Lord Burghley) sensibly saw to it that his mistress never received the letter. I do wonder what the "not like other women" comment meant!

And finally Mary was implicated in several lots to assassinate he cousin, Queen Elizabeth, the first was The Ridolfi Plot in 1571, it is said to have involved Philip II of Spain, Pope Pius V and the Duke of Norfolk, as well as Mary’s advisor, the Bishop of Ross, and Mary herself. It was to involve a Spanish invasion and a catholic uprising, followed by Mary being wed to the Duke of Norfolk, then would take the throne. When Ridolfi’s messenger was arrested at Dover, incriminating letters were seized and Norfolk was arrested, tried for high treason and found guilty. He was executed on Tower Hill on 2 June 1572. Ridolfi was abroad when the plot was uncovered and escaped this fate. Elizabeth was reluctant to authorise the execution of a fellow queen, but Mary was kept under ever-tighter surveillance.

Then there was the Throckmorton Plot Francis Throckmorton was arrested in November 1583 by Sir Francis Walsingham’s agents. Under torture he revealed a plot to invade England and place Mary on the throne, naming several allies in his confession. Throckmorton was executed and Bernardino de Mendoza, the Spanish ambassador, was sent back to Spain. Again, Parliament and Council believed the Queen of Scots should be executed. Again, Elizabeth refused to admit that Mary had been plotting against her. This plot contributed to the Act of Association of 1585 after which, Mary would be held responsible for any plot carried out in her name – whether she knew of it or not.

In 1585 we saw The Parry plot.William Parry had been working as a double agent for both the English Queen and Mary, Queen of Scots. Queen Elizabeth was informed that he had planned to kill her either in a private meeting or ambushing her. There were calls for Mary, Queen of Scots, to also be brought to justice –although there was no proof of her involvement in the Parry Plot.

Parry was arrested for treason and hanged at Westminster.

And finally The Babington plot in 1586. Babbington, an English Catholic nobleman plotted to restore the Roman Catholic religion by placing Mary on the English throne. Anthony Babington had made Mary aware of his plans to kill Elizabeth and help Mary escape.

Mary replied to Babington in letters, she explained how she wanted France and Spain to help her become Queen by invading England.

However, these letters were intercepted by Elizabeth’s spy, Sir Francis Walsingham. The letters were amended, to what extent we will never know, but it is known a gallows sign was added to a letter and a post-script asking for the names of the conspirators.

In her defence, she claimed that she could not be accused of treason as she was not an English subject.

Mary was taken to Fotheringay Castle and put on trial in October. Throughout the proceedings she protested her innocence and denied all knowledge of the plot, but the letters were produced as evidence of her guilt. After months of delays Elizabeth signed Mary’s death warrant on 1 February 1587. Seven days later Mary was beheaded in the Great Hall at Fotheringay.

Bonfires were lit and bells were rung throughout the country in celebration.

Some people aren’t supposed to be parents. That fact would immediately become clear on meeting Frank Collins and Mairead McLaughlin; two people that barely had control over their own lives, let alone that of the newborn they now had to care for.

The family (if you could call it that) relocated to Hawkins from Indianapolis when Drew was three years old, taking up residence at the Forest Hill trailer park, since it was all they could afford. Drew’s parents were rarely home at the same time, and if they were, they were either arguing or... making up. 

When Drew’s first sibling arrived, he was beside himself. He loved having a little buddy to hang out with all the time, even if they were kind of boring at first, because they mostly just slept and pooped. He quickly developed a talent for making baby Shiv laugh, crossing his eyes and pulling funny faces until they stopped crying. He knew how to change a diaper and mix formula before he was five.

Starting school was a challenge. He didn’t like being away from Shiv, and found it difficult to get his head around learning letters and numbers, because god knows his parents didn’t give him much of a framework to go off. He compensated for this by being the loudest voice in the classroom, always ready with a joke and a smile, something to distract people or make them like him.

Frank finally split for good a few weeks after his youngest son, Finn, arrived, and Mairead was already well on her way to checking out entirely. The McLaughlin siblings could often be found wandering around town by themselves: a seven year old boy pushing a baby in a too-large pram with one hand, while a sticky three year old clung to the other. Drew was doing his best to keep his siblings together, and was already a prolific liar, fending off the concerns of other adults with a wave and a smile.

His money-making schemes started early. He took to shoplifting candy and toys from the dollar store, and selling them back to his classmates at a mark up on the playground. When he got caught, he got in a lot of trouble, but it had only been a week, and he’d already made over fifty bucks. It seemed like a fortune to a ten year old, and his path was set.

Mairead vanished the year Drew turned sixteen. He reasoned it didn’t matter all that much, since he was already basically raising his siblings, and he thought they’d probably be a lot happier without having to worry about their mom all the time. He dropped out of high school after finishing his sophomore year, deciding it was more important to dedicate his time to generating some income.

Since then, Drew has been employed at virtually every establishment in town. Each job only ever seems to work out for a few months at a time before something goes wrong and he ends up back where he started. He means well, but he’s not good at anything, and his continued attempts at side-hustles invariably end up getting him into trouble.

He doesn’t really consider himself a criminal, but he’s definitely done some things of questionable legality in the name of trying to support his family. He has been known to steal, and has been an on-and-off drug dealer since high school.

It’s kind of ironic that when the earthquake hit, the McLaughlins’ home was one of the few that survived the destruction of the trailer park. They had so little to lose, even in comparison with their neighbours, that they may have been better equipped to deal with the change in circumstances - but their trailer was miraculously untouched.

All this to say, Drew McLaughlin is a loser. He won’t give up though - one day, he’s gonna make the big time, and everything’s gonna be different. Maybe it’s not his weekend, but it’s gonna be his year!

drew idolises bruce springsteen. it’s no accident that he dresses the way he does.

he has fallen prey to at least two multi-level marketing schemes in his life. he doesn’t want to talk about it.

his favourite flavour of ice cream is cherry garcia. he goes to scoops ahoy! insisting it’s his birthday every three months or so, relying on staff turn over so he won’t get caught out.

there was a brief period where drew was selling bootleg video tapes. you may own a copy of ‘a stir is barn’, ‘saturday knight fervour’ or ‘plant of the apes’.

drew walks everywhere. never learning to drive is probably the only thing he really regrets, but it’s so expensive!

he has the words ‘never back down’ tattooed on his bicep, and a wonky stick-and-poke smiley face that he did himself on his ankle. 

this is his second time working at the hideaway. he begged the owner to take him back after the earthquake, because the grind never stops. 

he’d rather be barefoot than wear shoes. this is probably because he hasn’t had a new pair in about five years, and the old ones hurt his feet.

Un total de 23 jueces y fiscales que responden a los intereses del régimen orteguista —actuando contra los nicaragüenses y sus derechos y libertades públicas— fueron sancionados este 15 de julio por el Gobierno de Estados Unidos, junto con un grupo de otros funcionarios de Guatemala, Honduras y El Salvador. Las sanciones incluyen la revocación o prohibición de visa estadounidense y el impedimento de ingreso o admisión en EE. UU. y están basadas en la Ley de Reforzamiento de la Adhesión de Nicaragua a las Condiciones para la Reforma Electoral, conocida como Ley Renacer.
