This animated take on Oliver Twist re-imagines Oliver as an adorable orphaned kitten who struggles to survive in New York City and falls in with a band of canine criminals led by an evil human. First, Oliver meets Dodger, a carefree mutt with street savoir faire. But when Oliver meets wealthy Jenny on one of the gang’s thieving missions, his life changes forever. Credits: TheMovieDb. Film Cast: Oliver (voice): Joey Lawrence Dodger (voice): Billy Joel Tito (voice): Cheech Marin Einstein (voice): Richard Mulligan Francis (voice): Roscoe Lee Browne Rita (voice): Sheryl Lee Ralph Fagin (voice): Dom DeLuise Roscoe (voice): Taurean Blacque Desoto (voice): Carl Weintraub Sykes (voice): Robert Loggia Jenny (voice): Natalie Gregory Winston (voice): William Glover Georgette (voice): Bette Midler (voice): Deborah Gates Additional Voice (voice): Charles Bartlett Additional Voice (voice): Jonathan Brandis Additional Voice (voice): Kal David Additional Voice (voice): Marcia Del Mar Additional Voice (voice): Victor DiMattia Additional Voice (voice): Judi M. Durand Additional Voice (voice): Greg Finley Additional Voice (voice): Javier Grajeda Louie the Sausage Vendor (voice): Frank Welker Additional Voices (voice): Nancy Parent Rita (singing voice) (uncredited): Ruth Pointer Additional Voices (voice): J.D. Hall Film Crew: Screenplay: James Mangold Novel: Charles Dickens Story: Roger Allers Editor: Mark A. Hester Screenplay: Tim Disney Animation: Chris Buck Editor: James Melton Songs: Howard Ashman Original Music Composer: J.A.C. Redford Songs: Billy Joel Director: George Scribner Screenplay: Jim Cox Songs: Barry Manilow Producer: Kathleen Gavin Character Designer: Glen Keane Songs: Huey Lewis Other: Alan Smart Layout: Bill Perkins Animation: Anthony DeRosa Animation: Jay Jackson Color Designer: Maria Gonzalez Animation Manager: Pat Sito Movie Reviews: CinemaSerf: I suppose it was only a matter of time before this classic Charles Dickens story got the Disney treatment – but given that it’s completely devoid of any darkness or eeriness, this rather too cheerful and vibrant pet-fest doesn’t really work for me. The eponymous kitten is adopted by a gang of dogs that, much like “Fagin’s Boys” in the book, engage in a bit of petty crime for their boss “Fagin” who, himself, lives in terror of the malevolent “Sykes”. When the latter cottons on that “Oliver” has been adopted into a wealthy home, he insists that “Fagin” enact a trap to lure “Jenny” from her luxury mansion so he can ransom her back to her dad. It falls to “Oliver” and his canine companions to thwart this dastardly plan. You can’t really fault the quality of the animation and an array of musicians including Barry Manilow and Dan Hartman are behind the songs that won’t exactly stick in your mind afterwards, but that do help to keep this amiable production rolling along. Sadly, though, it’s all just way too predictably light and fluffy and takes just a little too much of a factory approach to one of the more substantial stories of English literature. Younger kids may like it though – it’s pretty joyous and extols the virtues of loyalty, team playing and friendship and it’s not without the odd laugh to two.

St Gall
This is the second cheese I picked which is made made by Frank and Gudrun Shinnick of Fermoy Natural Cheese Company in Co. Cork in the south of Ireland. The small farm is organic and has a closed herd of Friesian cows. The name St Gall comes from St Gallen monastery in Appenzell, Switzerland. Gudrun is German, and all of their small-batch cheeses are based on German or Swiss styles. The 'natural' of their company name comes from the bacterias used as starters which are all cultivated from the same milk, not bought in.
Tumblr media
St Gall is a brine-washed, raw cow's milk cheese, formed into foot-wide rounds and matured for at least three months. Cut it open and a springy, creamy yellow interior full of little eyes is revealed. It's exceedingly rich, salty and savoury but still fairly gentle on the palette. This cheese melts well and would be totally gorgeous in a raclette-style dish or extravagant toasted cheese sandwiches.
Tumblr media
... Talking of which, while at the cheese fair I also found time to stuff a cheese and onion jam toasty of heavenly crispiness into my gob, courtesy of the Big Melt stand. Thank you Melton, we'll be back!

Thoughts on the Golden Globe winners?
I'm really annoyed that Charles Melton and Past Lives lost their categories. Charles easily gave one of the best performances of the year (RDJ, in contrast, gave one of the most "he is desperate for an Oscar and overdoing it" performances.... I mean, really, he was outdone by Bradley Cooper more than anyone) and Past Lives had such a beautiful, introspective tone, script, everything. I can see why it was beaten out in certain categories, but Anatomy of a Fall beating it out otherwise... Nah.
I also find it interesting that both losses involved Asian creatives.
So happy for Lily Gladstone and Cillian, I really believe in those wins. Although the direct of The Holdovers cats a pall over the movie (I didn't realize he had accusations against him when I watched the movie, and though I don't think it should be a major awards contender, I thought it was really sweet and the performances were pretty much uniformly strong) I'm thrilled for Da'Vine. She was so, so good and gave an anchoring performance.
I haven't seen Poor Things yet but I'm a fan of the Yorgos/Tony McNamara team, and it sounds right up my alley. I'm not mad at Emma winning that award. Yorgos and Tony bring out the best in her. But that needs to be it, because Lily is otherwise THE ONE. Her speech was so moving. I also really like the way Leo has been taking a step back for her to be showcased this season. He's got... his issues... but I'd love to see them perform together again. They have a very natural chemistry on and offscreen. Like, maybe we could see them in something mildly less dark together lol (big ask of Leo, I know).
Succession deservers everything it got. I honestly think Jeremy and Kieran gave equally strong performances, but I adore Kieran's talent and I really wanted him to win this year. I hope he repeats it at the Emmys. Sarah Snook supremacy. Matty Mac is always amazing and deserving. Let's gooooo.
Musical/Comedy category remains ridic, especially in TV. Jeremy Allen White is someone where I'm like... aware of his talent, though, so I'm not mad when he wins. Also, I'll be frank, the Calvin Klein ad convinced me that he deserves.
Surprised by Debicki because of the low quality script but she was the one light of those last two seasons and gave a uniformly strong performance. She really did a great job with capturing Diana's mannerisms and voice.
I honestly don't need Oppenheimer and Nolan getting all the awards it has. Killers of the Flower Moon was a much stronger film, to me. Like, I think Oppenheimer is one of Nolan's stronger movies. I like Oppenheimer. KOTFM is a totally different level. Aside from Cillian, I found the performances way stronger (I mean, we really need to stop pretending that Emily Blunt was good in that movie--I like Emily, but Jesus), the visual sensibility was less bOMBASTIC but more beautiful imo, and Scorsese did the thing.

Holiday Viewing 2023
I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays despite everything. This month, I got to watch some Christmas movies that were either or just ones I never got around to before now, and seen a few of this year's Oscar candidates.
The Shop Around the Corner: Two shop workers (James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan) are unaware that they are penpals. Yes, this is the movie that was eventually made into You've Got Mail. I wasn't really interested in the romantic plot, but I did love the subplot of the shop workers rallying around their unhappy boss (Frank Morgan) after his wife cheats on him. That was some Christmas movie magic right there.
Nuts: Barbra Streisand's more lesser known role as a call girl whose mental state is put on trial after she kills a client in self defense. I had to watch it after reading her memoir, and while the movie wasn't exactly well-received, she played the hell out of it.
Noelle: Anna Kendrick plays Santa's daughter, who tries to find her brother (Bill Hader) when he ditches the North Pole for yoga instead of taking over as the new Santa.
8-Bit Christmas: Screw A Christmas Story! I can relate better to watching a kid desperately try to get a Nintendo for Christmas instead of that stupid Red Ryder. Plus, any movie with Neil Patrick Harris is a win.
Candy Cane Lane: Eddie Murphy unwittingly faces being turned into a Christmas ornament after making a deal with an evil elf for the best Christmas decorations ever. Forget the reviews calling it dumb and corny--Christmas movies are ALWAYS dumb and corny! That's why we like them! And I thought it was hilarious.
The Family Plan: Basically National Lampoon's Vacation if Clark Griswald was an assassin instead of just an incompetent dad.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget: Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the original. However, while this pretty much followed the formula of a Disney direct-to-video sequel -- child of a legacy character wants to see their world while their traumatized parent wants to stay put -- it was pretty cute.
May December: Holy crap. This was amazing, in a morbidly disturbing way. Julianne Moore has never been more despicable as a predator who married her teenage victim. Charles Melton gives one of the most heart wrenching performances of the year as an emotionally stunted man that is only now coming to terms with what was done to him. And Natalie Portman as the actress who stoops to sociopathic levels for a film performance. Just watch it.
Maestro: Regardless of whether or not you think Bradley Cooper deserves all the hype he's been getting for this, he sure does know how to disappear into a role. And Carey Mulligan was fantastic in this...although I just found out that she wasn't exactly an appropriate casting choice ethnicity-wise. Godammit, Hollywood, I thought we weren't going to do this crap anymore!
