I will write this thought about Veganism and Classism in the USA in another post so as to not derail the other thread:
There are comments in the notes that say meat is only cheaper than plant based foods because of subsidies artificially lowering the price of meat in the United States. This is...part of the story but not all of it.
For my animal agriculture lab we went to a butcher shop and watched the butcher cut up a pig into various cuts of meat. I have had to study quite a bit about the meat industry in that class. This has been the first time I fully realized how strongly the meat on a single animal is divided up by socioeconomic class.
Like yes, meat cumulatively takes more natural resources to create and thus should be more expensive, but once that animal is cut apart, it is divided up between rich and poor based on how good to eat the parts are. I was really shocked at watching this process and seeing just how clean and crisp an indicator of class this is.
Specifically, the types of meat I'm most familiar with are traditionally "waste" parts left over once the desirable parts are gone. For example, beef brisket is the dangly, floppy bit on the front of a cow's neck. Pork spareribs are the part of the ribcage that's barely got anything on it.
And that stuff is a tier above the "meat" that is most of what poor people eat: sausage, hot dogs, bologna, other heavily processed meat products that are essentially made up of all the scraps from the carcass that can't go into the "cuts" of meat. Where my mom comes from in North Carolina, you can buy "livermush" which is a processed meat product made up of a mixture of liver and a bunch of random body parts ground up and congealed together. There's also "head cheese" (made of parts of the pig's head) and pickled pigs' feet and chitlin's (that's made of intestines iirc) and cracklin's (basically crispy fried pig skin) and probably a bunch of stuff i'm forgetting. A lot of traditional Southern cooking uses basically scraps of animal ingredients to stretch across multiple meals, like putting pork fat in beans or saving bacon grease for gravy or the like.
So another dysfunctional thing about our food system, is that instead of people of each socioeconomic class eating a certain number of animals, every individual animal is basically divided up along class lines, with the poorest people eating the scraps no one else will eat (oftentimes heavily processed in a way that makes it incredibly unhealthy).
Even the 70% lean ground beef is made by injecting extra leftover fat back into the ground-up meat because the extra fat is undesirable on the "better" cuts. (Gross!)
I've made, or eaten, many a recipe where the only thing that makes it non-vegan is the chicken broth. Chicken broth, just leftover chicken bones and cartilage rendered and boiled down in water? How much is that "driving demand" for meat, when it's basically a byproduct?
That class really made me twist my brain around about the idea of abstaining from animal products as a way to deprive the industry of profits. Nobody eats "X number of cows, pigs, chickens in a lifetime" because depending on the socioeconomic class, they're eating different parts of the animal, splitting it with someone richer or poorer than they are. If a bunch of people who only ate processed meats anyway abstained, that wouldn't equal "saving" X number of animals, it would just mean the scraps and byproducts from a bunch of people's steaks or pork chops would have something different happen to them.
The other major relevant conclusion I got from that class, was that animal agriculture is so dominant because of monoculture. People think it's animal agriculture vs. plant agriculture (or plants used for human consumption vs. using them to feed livestock), but from capitalism's point of view, feeding animals corn is just another way to use corn to generate profits.
People think we could feed the world by using the grain fed to animals to feed humans, but...the grain fed to animals, is not actually a viable diet for the human population, because it's literally just corn and soybean. Like animal agriculture is used to give some semblance of variety to the consumer's diet in a system that is almost totally dominated by like 3 monocrops.
Do y'all have any idea how much of the American diet is just corn?!?! Corn starch, corn syrup, corn this, corn that, processed into the appearance of variety. And chickens and pigs are just another way to process corn. That's basically why we have them, because they can eat our corn. It's a total disaster.
And it's even worse because almost all the USA's plant foods that aren't the giant industrial monocrops maintained by pesticides and machines, are harvested and cared for by undocumented migrant workers that get abused and mistreated and can't say anything because their boss will tattle on them to ICE.

Exquisite esquites
By Mia Leimkuhler
If I were mayor of Picnictown, every picnic would have the following: a blanket, a 1:1 dog-to-human ratio and esquites. The blanket’s there because grass is itchy no matter what the most outdoorsy person in the group says; the dogs because dogs are great. The esquites are essential because my favorite outdoor corn is elotes, but they don’t travel nearly as well as esquites. (The laws of Picnictown consider how easy it is to carry your picnic things on public transportation.)
This is barely a compromise, though, because Kay Chun’s esquites capture all the beloved and balanced elements of elotes: sweet summer corn, tangy lime, creamy cotija (and crema), spicy ancho chile. The smoky flavor you get from grilled corn is here, too, as the kernels are charred in a hot skillet until browned and caramelized. Perhaps the most enticing part of the recipe is this note from Kay: “Leftovers transform quickly into a great pasta salad the next day; simply toss with cooked pasta and olive oil.” Picnictown loves a resourceful pasta salad.
More picnic decrees, because it’s the first day of summer! Make Zainab Shah’s sheet-pan chicken tikka thighs ahead of time, and then toss some roti or naan in your tote bag for effortless but extremely delicious sandwiches. Ali Slagle’s green bean salad with dill pickles and feta is perfect all by itself, but if someone else wanted to bring a container of cooked barley or farro, that would be a really nice collaborative grain bowl picnic moment. (For even more lovely, easy picnic ideas that travel well, check out this recipe collection.)
Every June, the summer produce flows into and overwhelms my corner grocery store, and every June I am positively giddy about it. Right now the shelves are buckling from so many cherry tomatoes, and I’m doing my part with salad e-shirazi, basil and tomato fried rice and salmon and tomatoes in foil, a five-star, five-ingredient dinner from Mark Bittman.
I am trying to be more adventurous with my vegetables, branching out and bringing home goodies I don’t usually cook. I’ve never really loved bitter melon (I’m not alone), but I do like bitter things — extra dark chocolate, dandelion greens, Campari. So I’m going to try this stir-fried bitter melon with eggs, a recipe from Chutatip Suntaranon (known as Nok) adapted by Cathy Erway.
The creamy scrambled eggs, salty soy sauce and molasses-y brown sugar will mellow out the harshest edges of the bitter melon. And I trust Nok — I’ve had the pleasure of dining at Kalaya, Nok’s restaurant in Philadelphia, and Nok never misses.
Lastly: It’s hot out there, and I’d like to give you an excuse to stand in front of the open refrigerator after a long afternoon in Picnictown. Here’s Lisa Donovan’s new recipe for buttermilk tres leches cake, which is best served extremely chilled, straight from the pan. I interpret this as spooning giant mouthfuls of cold, creamy cake into my mouth while bending into the fridge, but if you’d like to use plates and forks and a table, by all means.

Eddie + 🌭🍕🍔🌮
lol i wrote most of this while i had really bad munchies 😂 it definitely didn’t help
also i’m sorry it’s so long, i got really carried away with this one 😅
You and Eddie had been thinking about something new to try out for your date nights
You wanted to keep things interesting and do things different than just your normal dates
Eddie had been thinking all day about what you could do together, but as much as he hated to admit it, money was short and he felt bad for not being able to treat you like he used to
But he knew that it wasn’t about the money you spent, it was about spending time with one another
He didn’t care what you did together, just as long as he could do it with you
And after thinking he finally came up with the perfect plan to incorporate your favorite dates into one
He knew you loved snuggle dates, curled up under a blanket with lots of snacks, the lights turned low, a scary movie on the TV to give him the perfect opportunities to hold you when you got too scared
And he loved getting to go out to eat whenever you could, seeing a new small restaurant pop up on your drives home and he would insist you go the very next day to be able to try it together
He wanted to make it a little surprise for you, and spent the rest of the day preparing everything for it
He wrote all the specific places you could go onto little pieces of paper and placed them each into Wayne’s mugs
Coffee shops, fast food places, ice cream stores, snack snacks
Every place he could think of around Hawkins that you could stop at for food all being placed into their specific categories: drinks, appetizers, dinner, dessert.
And he was so excited to see your reaction
As soon as you came over he welcomed you with a kiss like always and he quickly picked you up and brought you to the couch
In front of you were the mugs and he looked so smiley and happy while you were sitting there confused on the couch
Once you asked him what the pieces of paper in the mugs were for he finally explained
He wanted to have a fun dinner with you and get every course at a different place, all of them would be random since you were grabbing them from the mugs and after you got everything you’d come right back to the trailer to eat and watch a movie
You were so excited for your date night, and you could see how excited Eddie was too
He often likes to plan fun dates like this and every time you were so grateful to have a boyfriend put this much effort into your date nights
He waited for you to pull out slips of paper from each mug and watched with anticipation as you reached a hand into each one
Each time you pulled out a piece of paper you felt your heart race with excitement, wanting to know where you and Eddie were headed first
For drinks you were going to be stopping at a smaller place that Eddie’s shown you, a drink stand ran by an older lady just down the street
You couldn’t wait, you’ve been dying to go back since he first took you there
The older woman had the best fresh strawberry lemonade you’ve ever had and she even sold her fresh fruits at the same stand
Maybe you’d be able to convince Eddie to buy you some fresh fruit if you were nice enough
For appetizers you were stopping into the snack bar at the bowling alley, which confused you at first until you remembered just how amazing all their snacks were
Whatever grease they had used in the fryer had to have been there since it opened for them all to taste that good
Cheese curds, mini corn dogs, french fries, onion rings, fried pickles, all the best fried appetizer foods you could think of
Eddie always went nuts for their loaded fries anyways so you knew he was looking forward to that
For dinner you were going to be grabbing some takeout from a chinese restaurant a little further into town, but this wasn’t just any chinese restaurant
it was THE chinese restaurant
Family owned, smaller place, and all the food is homemade recipes that taste absolutely delicious
Lastly, you were going to swing inside Scoops Ahoy to get some ice cream for dessert
You were just hoping that Eddie wouldn’t get too distracted by all the other stores in the mall
And he had gotten you two some adorable pajamas to change into while you grabbed your food
And of course they matched!
You had gotten changed into your matching pajamas and Eddie looked so excited seeing you in yours
They were simple, black and white plaid pajama pants and a black shirt, but it was so adorable that he got them just for tonight
You got into his van and went off to the first stop: drinks
Your eyes lit up the moment you saw it up the road
The little old lady that ran it was sitting out with her fan and a sweet smile on her face, saying hello to you and Eddie as she saw you approaching
She always told her friends about the nice young couple that always liked to pay her visits
You and Eddie grabbed your drinks from her, for you a strawberry lemonade of course and Eddie got himself something from her recommendation
She said it was called an Agua Fresca and it was absolutely delicious!
(Eddie got the biggest size she had since he knew you would be stealing sips from it all night)
Your next stop was the bowling alley for your appetizers and on your walk in you got a few stares from the other patrons
Little kids giggling and their parents smiling at you and Eddie in your matching pajamas as you walked up to the snack bar
You both glanced over the menu before approaching and you both decided to get something for yourselves and one thing to share
Eddie got a side of onion rings for himself, you ordered mozzarella sticks, and got a side order of the fries for you both to share
The worker at the counter did give you two a strange look when he saw you weren’t wearing any bowling shoes or you definitely weren’t dressed for bowling, but he didn’t pay any kind to it
He was just happy the two of you were nice enough to tip him afterwards
You went back to the van and got all your food situated in the back, the basket of fries in your lap to snack on as Eddie drove a little further out for the Chinese restaurant
As Eddie drove the two of you around you made sure to keep checking the time
You didn’t want to keep each other out too late and not be able to eat all the things you got!
Not to mention how awful it would be to let those delicious drinks go to waste
As soon as Eddie parked he ran inside to grab your food order, not even telling you that he had gotten all your favorites ahead of time so you didn’t have to wait forever for it
It smelled delicious and you knew you’d be stuck on the couch eating all those yummy things for the rest of the night
He quickly made his way over to the mall to make your final stop at Scoops Ahoy for your ice cream
He didn’t want to forget the best part of your meal
The two of you raced to the store, agreeing that whoever was there last had to pay
Although you think Eddie definitely let you win just to be a gentleman
And he was even kind enough to buy the pints of ice cream instead of just the cups!
He knew you’d love to wake up with ice cream for breakfast
With all your goodies waiting for you in the van you both climbed back in and Eddie drove back to the park as quick as he could
You wanted to be able to enjoy your food while it was still hot
You grabbed your drink and the ice creams and Eddie grabbed his drink and the rest of the good as you ran into the kitchen to put the ice cream into the freezer
Eddie shut the trailer door behind him and placed the food onto the living room table, setting it all up for you as you rummaged through his tapes to find one to watch
You knew Eddie’s first pick would always be a horror movie but you wanted to mix it up a little tonight
He could never turn down one of his nerdy fantasy movies
You decided on Krull, a favorite of his, and pushed it into the VHS player on the tv while Eddie finished setting up your food
As the movie started the two of you didn’t know wether to savor your food or scarf it down like it was your last meal on earth
All your favorite things in one sitting was definitely something that Eddie had to plan more often

Speaking of human stuff!
What human food/snack do you think the boys would like the best?
And Horror gives me the vibes of "would cook any food you want even if he doesn't know the recipe because he loves you-"
Everyone has their vices
Killer is a fan of chocolate, but likes truffles in particular. He also has a weak spot for 3 Musketeers Dust likes just about any street food you can find, but he's a huge sucker for food truck/street food hot dogs. Everyone's is different, and he likes seeing which ones have what toppings or strange takes. He most enjoyed a deep fried, bacon-and-cheese wrapped one once. He was in grease heaven. Axe likes anything and everything, but has a special weakness for super gourmet foods because they're such a foreign concept to him. His favorite thing is wagyu beef. (And yes, he's a really good chef, so he absolutely will find out your favorite foods and figure out how to make them, even if he has to get the recipe off the internet) Cross likes street tacos possibly more than life itself. Barilla ones are his absolute fave, but any good taco truck will get his business and then some Baggs likes hot pockets and sushi. Nightmare ... is a mixed bag. He enjoys very, very fancy foods (high end steakhouse, Michelin star restaurant, generational family businesses, etc.) but he also has a weak spot for just... slop thrown together. He didn't eat well when he first started out on his own, resorting to what he could swipe without getting noticed... so he has some odd favorites, including but not limited to: -Pickles and mayonnaise -Corn dogs and pudding cups (chocolate goes best, he says, but he's not picky) -Mustard covered apple pie (originally to cover up the flavor of apples, which he hates, but he decided it tasted good enough. -Barbeque sauce and snack cakes of any kind If he's not feeling great, he'll go to town on these, as they're a bit of a comfort food for him. There's loads of other god-awful combos he likes, too.
Dream is a sucker for cakes. Any kind of cake. Ink likes anything that is vividly colored, heavily food-dyed, etc. Rainbow bagels, brightly colored candies, anything he can potentially get the colors off of while eating them, plus they're pretty! Blue loves his burgers. Humans make some absolutely insane burgers, too. He likes the ones that are challenges.
Error likes brand name chocolate, the fancier the better. He also likes popcorn, and has recently been turned on to popcorn with toppings, like seaweed, flavored dust or salts, the like.

Suptober 30 Oct.: Fingers
Cas peaked around the laptop screen. "Oh, you found the fingers."
deancas, established relationship au; 3 scenes from Halloweentime (one of them lemon flavored, ahem)
i.
"Cas?" Dean threw his arm across the mattress and encountered no resistance. He opened his eyes with great reluctance. "Cas?" he called out more loudly.
"I'm in the kitchen," Cas called back.
Dean found this to be less than ideal, but rolled over, sat up, and swung his feet onto the ice cold floor. Yipped and grimaced. Leaned over to feel around for his Scooby Doo slipper socks. Put them on and stood up awkwardly. Stretched up up up and felt his skeleton crackle and pop in multiple places like a bowl of rice krispies.
At the little round table in their little yellow kitchen, Cas was typing something furiously at the laptop Sam had refurbished for him. He looked up and smiled as Dean wandered past towards the coffee pot.
"I forgot to send Jack the recipe for the spooky eyeball casserole," Cas explained.
Dean took a long sip of scorching hot coffee and started to wake up some. "Put a note in there about how using both black and green olives for the irises on the meatballs provides more visual interest." He read a lot of cooking blogs and they were always saying shit like that.
Cas nodded and kept typing.
A single ray of sunlight escaped a bank of clouds and illuminated the plastic jack o'lantern sitting on the windowsill, made the orange plastic glow with beckoning malevolence. Dean, after making sure Cas wasn't watching, went over and plunged his hand into the candy within the pumpkin. What was breakfast without a few bites of pure medicinal grade sugar?
His fingers closed around something with a texture so revoltingly squishy he flinched and yanked out his hand. The pumpkin tipped off the window sill and barfed its contents all over the countertop. Dean gawked in horror at the offerings: miniature Snickers, small boxes of grape Nerds, chocolate coins with bats embossed on foil wrappers, and at least a half dozen pale middle and index fingers, fleshily lying there like stunned slugs.
Cas peaked around the laptop screen. "Oh, you found the fingers."
Dean gaped at him in horror. "What the hell are those?"
"They're fake, Dean." Cas closed the laptop. "Claire and I bought them at the novelty store the other day."
"Why?" Dean had not consumed enough caffeine for this.
Cas shrugged. "Claire said tricks are an essential part of trick or treat."
"But I'm the only one eating candy out of this pumpkin."
Dean heard his own affronted voice and blinked a couple of times. Was his life now truly so pedestrian, so boringly peaceful, that jokey toys were upsetting? A smile began to form on his mouth before he could prevent it from happening. He sighed in defeat.
Cas kissed his cheek as he reached around him for the coffee pot.
"Yeah, yeah," Dean muttered, and kissed Cas's temple in return.
ii.
"So we have chicken fingers, fish fingers, zucchini fingers, mozzarella fingers, dill pickle fingers, and, ha ha, lady fingers." Sam gestured at the long folding table theatrically, which suited his black satin cape and weird little fangs. "I think this is the most coherent potluck gathering we've achieved thus far."
"Jack's bringing Claire and they'll add a couple more things, plus the monster toes are still baking," Dean informed him while pouring potato chips into a bowl shaped like a Frankenstein head.
"What are monster toes?" Sam asked.
"Hot dog nibblets wrapped in crescent roll dough." Dean grinned at Sam's grimace. "You dip them in toe jam."
"Great." Sam, still seeming pained, looked across the living room, now crowded with friends, at the smaller table near the kitchen door. "Are there any non deep fried vegetables in this room right now?"
"Yo," Donna said, waving. She was dressed like an ear of corn. "Although technically I'm also a grain and a fruit." She saluted him with her bottle of beer and went back to talking to Garth, who was wearing an old timey prison uniform like a knockoff Hamburglar.
Sam waved back weakly.
Dean took pity on him. "There's a veggie tray in the kitchen. And maybe some apples?" He patted Sam on the shoulder. "Knock yourself out."
Sam wandered away. Cas came over with a small crockpot liner full of queso and plonked it down on the table between a bowl of alien-green marshmallow salad (the only salad worth Dean's time) and a basket of freshly baked rolls. A blurp of melted cheese had gotten onto the pad of Cas's thumb and he chose to lick it clean right in front of Dean.
He caught Dean staring and blushed. This made Dean stare much more.
Cas awkwardly wiped off his thumb with a purple napkin. "Sorry."
"Don't be," Dean said in a low, lecherous tone, leaning nearer.
The brims of their respective cowboy hats collided before any other part of them could make contact.
Embarrassing.
iii.
With Eileen and Sam crashing on the pull-out living room couch bed, and Jack asleep in the bedroom right next door, Dean and Cas were having to be quiet. Dean realized how difficult that was, and how unused he was anymore to having to account for thin walls and other folks in close proximity, around the time he bit down on Cas's throat.
He put his hand softly over Cas's mouth too, which did muffle some of the moans Cas couldn't or wouldn't stifle completely on his own. Something about pinning Cas down – no more than Dean actually was pinning him down, since he harbored no delusions about Cas's ability to throw him off if he chose to – carved a line of ecstasy through Dean straight from his head to his feet. Dean left the hand on Cas's mouth for only a moment, long enough perhaps for Cas to have proven he'd behave, and removed it to curl his fingers around Cas's hard cock.
"Hush," Dean said against Cas's mouth as Cas whimpered into the touch. "Let me."
Cas laid back and allowed Dean to find a perfect, punishing rhythm, exactly the one Cas preferred to use on himself – and oh, Dean thought, I need to see that again soon.
"I can't," Cas whispered, tossing his head on the pillow and sounding uncertain about what he couldn't do.
Dean rose up just enough to kiss his mouth again and again, their tongues slipping against one another as his fist stayed tight and as Cas's cock felt heavy and silky and terribly sweet in his grip. "Do you need me to use some lube?" he whispered.
Cas bucked up into Dean's fist and shook his head, eyes on Dean until the tipping point of pleasure forced them close, his throat bared and Dean gentling him down off the orgasm's white-hot edge. Dean dragged his fingers up through the spill of come on Cas's stomach and sucked them into his mouth while Cas watched, eyes glittering and hungry in the dim light. After a moment Dean wiped his hand off on a discardable blanket and Cas descended on him in another split-second; their kiss was dirty and deliciously bitter, and left Dean gasping as Cas raked his hand into Dean's pajamas.
"On or off?" Cas asked, hand tight around the base of Dean's aching cock.
"On," Dean said, grinning. "I gotta do laundry tomorrow anyway."
But he'd forgotten how rarely Cas obeyed and was soon divested of the pjs. The bedroom's cool air proved a useful contrast to the furnace of Cas's mouth. When Dean came later into that welcoming wet heat, he flailed for Cas's hand, tangled their fingers together. Afterwards, Cas sprawled on Dean's chest; they breathed together for a long time, Cas falling asleep as Dean traced imaginary protections onto his skin with his fingertips.

5 foods: 4 you love, 1 you hate
I am a NOTORIOUSLY picky eater (combination of autism + picky eater gene), which makes me a pain in any food environment I’m not used to (though I’ve been working on broadening my palate and, I want this emphasize, will always be polite when I’m staying at someone’s place. Guest hospitality trumps the picky eating gene every time.)
4 I love:
    1. Rice, my beloved. Especially in teriyaki chicken recipes. Cheap, easy to make, filling. Who’s doing it like Her?
    2. Pork belly -- I developed a taste for it when I was in Ireland. There’s a restaurant chain there called “The Spitjack” that serves pork belly, and it’s in most of the major cities which makes it an ideal stop for me at the end of a long conference (I’ll probably actually find an excuse to go when I’m in Ireland this week, actually). I’ll also eat pork belly in ramen; there’s a nice ramen place where I live that sells a relatively cheap pork belly dish for $8 with rice and quail egg that I love. (Paired, because I’m a Classy, Refined Bitch, with strawberry Ramune soda.) Something of a luxury food, given...well. Grad student. But so, so worth it.
   3. Hot Dog Lattice -- My beloved. Speaking of foods I’m very likely to get while I’m in Ireland this week, no trip to Ireland’s complete without Her. (I actually found out the reason why most of my Irish friends look at me like I grew two heads when I bring up hot dog lattices -- they are actually Dutch. Hence why you can get ahold of them mostly at places like the Dutch brand Spar, even though you can sometimes find them in, say, Dunne’s, but not Tesco. God bless the Dutch for that one, honestly)
   4. Ziti with meat balls -- When I was a child, my mother worked in a town about 45 minutes away. We were financially secure, we were happy, and sometimes, she would bring back ziti for me from an Italian place that was about an hour away. For me, ziti always tastes a little bit like love, as I still associate it with my mom coming home and those early days when it didn’t feel like we had any problems. My ziti uses a different sauce than the one they used at that restaurant, I don’t think I could replicate it if I tried, but baked ziti became one of my favorite dishes to make when I was in Ireland, since the noodles were cheap and it was easy to stick the pot in the oven, put on the cheese, and stick it back in again.  (Yes, I’m aware that most of these are things I had in Ireland, but consider: They have happy memories attached to them.)
1 I hate:
    1. Pickles -- I have hated them ever since I was a child. Hated, hated, hated. “Just remove the pickle from the cheeseburger!” “But you don’t UNDERSTAND, I can *still taste it.*”
Honorable mention to:
Easy mac, pulled pork (especially with Sweet Baby Ray’s sauce), lemon sugar crepes, garlic bread, chicken rice casserole, Cadbury creme egg ice cream (’tis the season), Sesame chicken, toast with a light scraping of grape jelly or orange marmalade, the fried chicken from the restaurant near where I grew up, Wendy’s chicken nuggets with fries and fruit punch, bacon (also, for once, I’m specifying American bacon here), mashed potatoes that still have a little bit of the chunks in them with butter, pork chops, garlic naan bread (sometimes with meat inside), mango mousse cake, potato pancakes, fried oysters, European chocolate (Cadbury is one of my all-time favorites, especially the popping Cadbury bars, but I’m not THAT precious about it...so long as it tastes like chocolate), s’mores, Cornish game hen, Kerry Gold butter, challah bread from the bakery near my old apartment

The Memorial Day holiday weekend is almost upon us, which means we’ve finally reached the much-anticipated unofficial start of summer! Get ready to break out your sunscreen, flip flops and white jeans and dig into some tasty classic cookout fare. You can rest assured that your local Down to Earth farmers market will be well-stocked with all the grilling essentials and plenty of seasonal goodies to snap up as you make the rounds at your favorite vendors this Sunday. Marinades Before you tie on your apron and fire up the barbie, your fresh meat, fish, poultry and veggies from the farmers market will require a little pre-grilling TLC to bring out their best. Marinades are just seasoned sauces that you apply before cooking but the introduction of salt, acid and then the heat of cooking amplifies the marinade’s effect on texture and taste. Similar to a vinaigrette, marinades are typically made up of three parts oil to one part acid (3:1) plus seasonings and aromatics that can be handpicked to create whatever style and flavor you desire. If you’d rather skip the DIY, MOMO Dressing's line of unique Japanese-inspired dressings make the perfect ready-to-use marinades with an Asian twist. MOMO Dressing uses the freshest ingredients sourced from eco-certified New York State farms to create their small-batch, handcrafted products right here in Brooklyn, NY. Their flavors include Shiso (Japanese Mint), Basil, Sesame, Yuzu Jalapeno and Ginger. Condiments Your juicy burgers and hot dogs are going to be fully decked out this weekend thanks to an array of delicious farmers market condiments to choose from:
Dr. Pickle’s Mmmelish combines the doc’s sweet relish with horseradish brined sauerkraut, spicy brown mustard, and finely chopped horseradish pickles. Try it once and you'll be hooked! It’s the ultimate enhancer for beefy burgers, dogs, sausages, veggie burgers and even grilled cheese. Don’t forget to pick up a jar of their whole pickles and pickle chips too. No barbecue is complete without them!
MOMO Dressing's homemade BBQ Sauce will add layers of smoky, tangy, thick and sweet flavors to whatever it’s paired with.
Bombay Chutney Company's authentic Indian chutneys will make the perfect spicy accompaniment to all your grilled entrees. Flavors include mint, plum, cranberry, coconut, pomegranate and tomato.
Your burger will taste great topped with sticky caramelized onions and Taiim Shack Mobile's creamy hummus for a delicious contrast.
Simple Fine Foods makes farm-to-table sauces, spreads, condiments and British pub-inspired heat-and-eat foods. Their line of bottled, squeezable sauces will jazz up everything from egg and potato salads to burgers, dogs and fries. Flavors include Everything Aioli Squeeze, Pesto Aioli Squeeze, Spicy Chipotle Squeeze and Sriracha Horseradish Squeeze.
Fixings Why not splash out and put all the fixings on your burgers, sandwiches and dogs this weekend! After all, extra toppings and garnish deliver a punch of visual appeal, layers of flavor and nutritional goodness to boot!
Bacon makes everything taste better so fry up some rashers of Goode and Local By Don Rodrigo’s premium thick-cut, hickory-smoked Pennsylvania bacon. Lightly flavored with maple syrup, cinnamon, and spices, their pastured, Mangalitsa bacon is nitrate and nitrite-free for a healthier alternative without compromising on taste or quality.
Dr. Pickle’s fresh barrel sauerkraut is crisp, golden and delicious. They make it by lightly salting and soaking white cabbage in vinegar and water.
Raw onions can pack a pungent bite, not to mention the need for breath mints! Caramelized onions are delicious on top of a burger or sandwich and are super easy to make at home. Pick up 2-3 yellow, white, or red onions at the farmstalls, Maplebrook Farm unsalted butter and a bottle of balsamic vinegar and olive oil and follow this simple recipe to whip up your own batch that will last for a few days in the fridge.
A medley of sautéed gourmet mushrooms from Mushrooms.NYC make a delicious side or topping and will add a pop of flavor to burgers, steak, chicken, fish and salads.
Of course, a classic American burger isn’t truly complete without a generous layer of crisp lettuce and ripe tomatoes. Instead of blander iceberg lettuce, branch out with some crunchy romaine or silky butterhead lettuces which are not only tastier, they also contain a variety of vitamins and minerals. Although tomato season isn’t here yet, the farms are carrying greenhouse-grown tomatoes which have ripened under the spring sunshine of late.
Strawberries are reaching their springtime prime right now which means selecting dessert will be a no-brainer for Memorial Day. And goodness knows that a big dollop of Goodness Dairy's grass-fed, creamy vanilla ice cream will make the perfect “condiment” for these lushly ripe ruby red gems. As we usher in the warmer weather and droves of new seasonal produce, we wish you a relaxing long weekend and look forward to seeing you in the farmers market.

Anyway.
Miyuka’s cravings while she was pregnant.. let’s see.
A Tamato berry soaked in chocolate sauce and ketchup, she ate it with ease.
Chocolate ramen noodles, not bad
Pecha berry soaked in mustard? I can’t imagine Miharu’s face when she sees her twin trying this disgusting recipe. Gross.
A deep fried hot dog but instead of the sausage, it’s a pickle inside the bread.
She can already hear her younger twin gagging from a distance as she eats her strange cravings.
