Sleep is for the weak

‘Sleep is for the weak’ I like to tell myself and others. Most of the people I say it to take it as a joke and just chuckle. Some like to make it my catch phrase. Others reuse my line as a joke, as an excuse for there late nights. But it seems that no one is ever able to see my tired eyes, or notice the circles that have become a daily occurrence on my face. Some think that I do this to myself willingly. That I stay up for hours at a time for my own pleasure. That I torture myself because I enjoy staying up for days at a time as I overwork my body and mind, ‘Sleep is for the weak’ I have to remind myself as I sit in class, my eyes half closed as I take notes slowly. You may ask why I do this to myself if I know the consequences of what happens, but if I tell you I’m scared you’d leave. I’m so scared that if I tell anyone what’s going on you’d all be scared. That if I told you every time I close my eyes to sleep I see their, faces. They yell that it’s all my fault they decided to go, If I had done more and cared about them more. Maybe they would be around. ‘Sleep is for the weak’ I tell myself as I listen to another one of my friends at the middle of the night, their hearts broken and torn apart as they come to me for help.  I have to talk them off the tallest of ledge’s, sometimes they’re so close to the edge I fear they’ll fall off the ledge and leave me behind. I have become so used to hearing my phone ring in the middle of the night, for someone in need to be on the other side as they explain to me what has happened. As they explained to me why they thought it would be best for them to leave. ‘Sleep is for the weak’ I tell myself as I work on perfecting that one note in band or memorizing a brand new Forensics piece, hearing my teacher whisper discouragement in my ear telling me how I’m worthless, how I’m a waste of space until I can perfect this. Until I can actually play a whole song perfectly. I just repeat to myself over and over that, ‘Sleep is for the weak’ I repeat the phrase to myself like it was a mantra for me to live by. I can’t sleep because I need to be perfect now. Because if I’m not perfect then I’m not good enough to be alive. ‘Sleep is for the weak’ and I am strong, I have to be strong for my friends when they can’t be strong for themselves. I sacrifice my own health for the health of others, I sacrifice my own well being to make sure I can uphold my responsibilities to all the people I promised. So I make my sacrifices, I lose my sleep. All because I repeat to myself over and over: ‘Sleep is for the weak’.

Not the best week..... #byebyebike

Everyone has weeks like this one: tiring, long, with tricky life changes and decisions like buses that come in threes. But hey - that’s life! It’s alright.

Then my mid-week training cycle hit the skids when my rear wheel buckled and needed replacing. But hey – stuff happens, £100 in parts and service was unideal but unavoidable so it was alright.

The next day I collected my bike and enjoyed a fun cycle down to a newly-opened restaurant in East London.

We’d forgotten the D-lock portion of one Kryptonite bike lock so Tobi and I looped our cables through our bikes and secured them both to the post using a D lock - just for the short time we would be at dinner, we thought it would be alright. It wasn’t.

We came back to find that someone had cut through the cables and taken both of our bikes...

Looking down at the cut-up lock cable, it’s fair to say I was pretty dismayed and a little heartbroken, but in equal measure since then I have been totally bowled over by how friends old and new have rallied with commiserations, support and help – including four different offers to lend a bike for the London to Paris cycle!

So here’s a huge thank you to everyone for brightening up a trying week ❤️ I’m pleased to say that the ride is going ahead: Tobi has got a replacement bike, and I’m picking one up next Saturday. In the meantime, for my part, training this week will feature extra gym time (and lots of walking).
