V: Don't Scream Your Story's Marred With Bad Intentions - Main Verse - Canon events have happened unless previously discussed. Dead muses can be interacted with as ghosts/zombies or in flashbacks. Note: Adam is dead for this AU.
V: Just Let The Sun In; It's Love! - Everything Is Fine And Nothing Hurts Verse - No canon events have happened. Typically a modern AU unless there's a specified time period in the media.
V: Everything Is Alright; Yeah Tell Me That You're Alright - Post-Canon Fix-It Verse - All canon events happened but Something happened to rewind things. All dead characters are alive again and are okay. They have scars from their deaths, however.
V: Smile For The Camera But Don't Flash Your Teeth - Werepire Verse 1 - Please see muse list for Werepire species of each muse - A verse in which supernatural creatures are real and people know about them. They are integrated into society like normal people for the most part.
V: I Could Be Honest; I Could Be Human; I Could Become The Silver Bullet In Your Head - Werepire Verse 2 - Please see muse list for Werepire species of each muse - A verse in which supernatural creatures are real and they are not widely known by the general public. They must hide themselves and present human as much as they can, and many do by means of magic.
V: The Smell Of Flowers Was So Thick And Sickly Sweet I Felt Like I Might Choke To Death - Hanahaki Verse - Please see muse list for the flowers that they cough up in the verse. UNDER CONSTRUCTION - A verse in which unrequited love leads to the coughing up of flower petals. It can be fatal if the infected person does not get the surgery to remove them or confess and have those feelings returned.
Blair Witch Verses
V: And Everybody Says They Know Better; And Maybe They’re Right - Non-Blair Witch AU - Ellis didn’t go to the forest to look for Peter because Bullet got sick after stealing a piece of pizza with onion on it. He made it because Ellis took him to the vet immediately, but he missed going to the search party. Lane and Talia never went with the group to the woods because of Lane's father interfering and making them late.
V: I Still Felt Real Depressed But I've Got Plenty Of Other Things To Spend My Time - Fix-It AU - Ellis reasons with the witch and manages to undo a lot of the damage to those he cared about. As long as they remain in Black Hills Forest, he is allowed to have Emmett and Carver around. He spends a lot of time with them and calls Jess whenever he has a signal. Lane does not become possessed due to Ellis' relationship to the Witch. She takes pity on him, but cannot let him go, so he remains with Ellis and the others.
V: Sometimes The Short End Of The Stick Is The Sharpest - Becoming Carver AU - Ellis destroyed all of the witch's sigils and eventually became Carver. He is a gentler Carver and is still depressed and guilty. He hates what he's done and craves death much of the time. All he wants is his freedom.
V: Hey Would It Be So Bad If I Stayed? I'm Just A Ghost Out Of His Grave - Ghost!Ellis AU - As a ghost, Ellis haunts the woods and the surrounding area. He is joined by the other dead in the forest and is often subjected to the witch's desires and whims. He spends a lot of time with her and the other ghosts in the forest.

V: I Wanna Start From The Top Maybe Like A Do-Over - Patch Notes AU - Post-canon Fix-It AU. Nobody stayed dead, nothing hurts, and everything is fine.

Modern Setting - Louis and Leila
Extrovert
The neon strips blare as we're thrust from the waiting room to the main arena. People around me are bubbling with excitement, darting into scattered groups that dive into the narrow alleyways and corridors of the plywood cityscape. I think I see a glimpse of Louis/Leila disappear through a cramped crawl space, but before I can confirm the countdown begins, and the venues 'commander' warns with prerecorded hype announces the imminent arrival of our opponents.
Gripping the garish green plastic of my armament, I dart for the nearest promise of cover, and press my back into the hollow plasterboard.
Illusion of danger or not, as the crackling speakers descend through their count of ten, my heart begins to beat against my ribs, my fingers fidget, and my breath climbs higher up my throat.
We're twelve against twelve. Greens versus Pinks. There are team names too needlessly quirky to commit to memory, and technically there are even ranks within those teams, but from experience, none of that matters once the main klaxon sounds.
I wonder if Louis/Leila is as nervous as I am? Are they also crouched alone in the dark, or have they stuck with some of our teammates? Are they excited, scared? Perhaps both. Are they looking for me?
The bottled wail of the klaxon screams through the arena, and somewhere in the distance I hear the beginnings of battle. I press further into the shadows, the scenery grinding in protest but holding. Heavy footsteps thunder through the twilight glow, and a hulking blur of silhouette dashed with bubblegum pink narrowly streaks passed my hiding spot. They're gone before I can act, and despite the loss of potential points, I can't find it in myself to regret my inaction.
"Heads!"
I yelp as a second set of footsteps skids to a halt in front of me, and a cheerful grin lit by the neon lights, curls into a familiar laugh.
"Louis/Leila!"
"Up and at em, Dear! The Pink lot won't take the hit for us!" Their impression of the brutish military general that delivered our health and safety warnings before the match makes me crease in two with laughter.
I take the hand that offered to me, and find myself swiftly yanked up onto my feet.
We lose, but we do so in style.
All throughout the meal that follows, Louis/Leila weaves elaborate tales to tell the others when we get home. Sweeping epics of laser and plastic plating, glittering with all the flair and outright embellishments their mind can conjure. We're both bruised and battered, and the strain of the hour-long match burns in our limbs, but the devilishly unhealthy joy of pizza keeps our spirits high, and by the time we leave the squeaky plastic seats of the takeaway, we're still fizzing.
The rain doesn't start immediately, it wouldn't. No, it waits until we've decided to walk home instead of taking the bus. The first few drops are light, a misting drizzle that makes Louis/Leila's straw blonde hair sparkle. Then it gets heavier.
"B weather!" they grumble, hiking their jacket up over their head, trying in vain to stretch its meagre shelter over me too.
"It's not so bad," I lie, already soaked through to my skin. "And we're not that far from home now."
We duck beneath an archway as the weather worsens.
Dripping from head to toe, Louis/Leila slides out of their jacket and tries to shake the worst of the water away. Finding success in the endeavour, thin though that success might be, they take the tie from their hair and try to shake out their hair.
Mildly dizzy, and only a little dryer, they peer through their messy locks and smirk. "You can say it. I look like a blessed Retriever, don't I?"
I chuckle, lift my hands, and begin to comb my fingers through their hair. "Can't plan for the weather. Maybe if we sneak in the back we can avoid commentary?"
Louis/Leila groans, leaning into my ministrations, and the first phantoms of their brother's snark fills their thoughts. Then they still, their eyes locked upon mine as such concerns drift away.
"Can't plan for the weather," they say, their voice soft as their breath falls across my lips. "Good excuse though."
I find myself drifting away from the cloying damp of my clothes, the ache of the bruises on my legs and arms, even the quiet shadows of the night seem to slip from my grasp. Everything folds itself away neatly, retreating to leave just the two of us.
"Excuse for what?" I ask breathlessly.
"Staying right here with you."
---
Introvert
The doorbell dings, and before I can so much as lift a finger, Louis/Leila is chatting away with whoever it is that has delivered the pizza.
"Eager, aren't they?" Lars quips from behind his coffee mug, earning a swipe from a tea towel Peyton/Peidyn wields like a whip. He ducks the admonishment with ease.
"What have you all got lined up?" I ask, placing my own mug in the sink.
Peyton/Peidyn shrugs. "I'll go with what the other two want."
"Which means it's up to me, Ana/Abe, and your little one, so..." Lars also shrugs. "What ever's our little overlord desires, I guess. You?"
"Louis/Leila's got a plan."
Lars snorts into the cream porcelain and dregs of his coffee.
"May I present the finest, greasiest flatbreads of cheesy goodness this side of regret!"
Louis/Leila sweeps into the kitchen with a flourish, twirling two enormous boxes on the tip of one finger, while a third balances precariously upon their other hand.
Peyton/Peidyn swoops in to rescue the two, sliding them deftly onto two preprepared wire racks upon the counter. "Did you have to make them sound so appealing?"
"Just speaking truth to takeaway," Louis/Leila grins. They turn to me and bow, offering up their free hand like a dashing paramour from a 50's romance. "Dear? Our evening awaits."
Lars groans and mutters several pleas for mercy to an uncaring authority.
I ignore him, and take Louis/Leila's hand.
Up three flights of narrow stairs, passed two doors, and several promises of 'no trespass' from the rest of the house, Louis/Leila and I ascend to our 'nest' and begin our night in.
"Better eat first," they say, placing the box carefully on the table before the TV. "Cold pizza only tastes good in the mornings. Then I've got movies and games, even a few of Lars' board games if you're up for it? He won't notice they're missing till the next game night. Or if you want to just watch what ever's on, we can do that. Or..."
I step up into Louis/Leila's immediate orbit, and gently take their flustered face between my hands.
"Louis/Leila," I say with just the right balance of firmness and sympathy. "Take a deep breath."
They do, and it takes all my willpower not to chuckle as they all but melt into my touch.
"Breathing is good," they say on their third deep breath.
"It is." I smile as the tension falls away from their bony shoulders. "Why so nervous?"
Their bright blush warms my palms. "Well... I mean... It's just me, isn't it? What if you get bored? Or I make an arse of myself? Or the pizza tastes B awful? It's all on me."
I kiss their burning cheek. "It's all on you, and that's a good thing. Because you know what? I like just you, just the way you are, arse, bad pizza, boredom, and all."

Her world or mine
I have no idea when i wrote this but i found it in my drafts half done so i finished it and- yh that's about it😅
This was meant to be based upon the song her world or mine but i got off track so its only loosely based upon it.
word count: 3640
Enjoy!
He hasn't used the truck for weeks, he had no reason to anymore, being in it only brought back memories of you. The long drives, the short drives too. The way you would hold his hand while he was driving or how you would remind him to pay attention to the road when he looked in your direction for too long. All the memories were fresh within his mind- almost as if it was yesterday.
Even now, he was only sitting in it, he had to do the beer run and obviously that couldn't be done on a bike, he had to take the truck, but all he could think about was how you used to sit in the passenger seat beside him. He could see it in his mind so vividly, if he didn’t know you had moved on he would swear you were sitting with him.
Looking at the dash his gaze caught the Polaroid photo that was still in its place next to the radio. Your face accompanied a smile whilst his had his usual ‘tough’ man expression, but if you looked close enough, you would be able to see a small smile placed upon his lips. You took it at one of the infamous Mayans parties, he remembered how it took you around 10 minutes to ‘convince’ him to take it, he wanted to take it from the moment you suggested it but he wondered how far you would go to get him to do it
-
“Please” you had been begging him for the last 5 minutes in attempt to get him to take a photo with you but to no avail
“No” you two were sitting on the bench outside the clubhouse, people surrounding the both of you, everyone was involved on their own conversations so neither of you paid any mind to them. Of course he was still aware of his surroundings but was more relaxed than usual
“But come on” you begged
“No y/n” he kept his face as straight as he could but you could slowly see a shadow of a smirk forming upon his lips
“Why?”
“No face no case” he shrugged with a slight smirk on his face, clearly that was a lie. Not even 20 minus prior you had taken a photo of all of the club members standing outside of the clubhouse per bishop’s request so he could frame it and hang it somewhere within the clubhouse to show off the members.
“Why are you so stubborn?”
“Why are you so adamant? “He questioned
“Because”
“Because what?” standing up he motioned for you to do so as well,
“Just because”
“Come on follow me”
Standing up you took this hand as led you away from the party,
“Where are we going?”
“To take this god damn photo”
-
Recalling that night he felt a pain inevitably run across his chest, sure you two were only friends when it was taken but that night was the foundation for building the relationship you two once shared.
Why had he been so stupid to let you go?
He knew he would have to drive past your place to get to the brewery, it was inevitable really. There was no other way unless he was going to drive an extra 30 minutes, which he didn't have time for.
when he reached the turn in to your street he slowed down a little, looking at your house from a distance he could see a car he didn’t recognize in the driveway. As he got closer he could see two people on the porch, he immediately recognized you accompanied by some guy.
Of course you had someone else.

Sitting on the couch you couldn't help but let your mind drift back to him, you missed his smile, you missed the way he would have a running commentary while watching anything on the TV, you missed how he would hold you after a long day, you missed everything about him.
“You’re thinking about him again, aren't you?”
You did nothing but hum in response
Your brother had elected to stay with you for a few weeks while he was on a business trip for some type of expansion for the company he worked for. Originally it was a good idea, it kept you mind off Ez, but the more time your brother was here, the more he talked about his wife back home and how he couldn't wait to get back to her just made you think about how you don't have someone in your life to look forward to anymore, you no longer had someone you could tell everything to, someone who would stay by your side, someone you knew would be waiting for you when you were away from home. As much as you loved your brother, you were thankful he was leaving tomorrow
“Im gonna go get a drink” standing up you heard your brother mumble something in response but you elected ignored him and heading to the kitchen.
As you approached the fridge you spotted the picture of you and Ezekiel stuck on the door. You were pretty sure it was Coco who had taken when him, you, Ez and Angel went over the border for a day because none of you had anything to do and for some reason Mexico was the first thing that was suggested. You had been meaning to get rid of it but couldn't bring yourself to. Alot of memories were collected between the four of you, some of them you were just not ready to let go of yet.
By now he was probably already in another relationship so why were you still holding on?
Grabbing a bottle of water you headed outside and sat on the porch steps. You knew there was a party at the clubhouse tonight, Angel had invited you to come, but you knew Ez would be there.
Did you really want to see a girl all over him while you're still here alone? Because that would definitely happen
Maybe he wouldn't be there? Or maybe he would be too busy doing stuff to even realize you were there
You were too wrapped up in your own mind to even realize your brother had stepped outside till you heard a creak from the wood behind you
“Y/n?”
“Yeah”
“you okay?" He asked sitting beside you
“yep"
You two sat in silence for a few moments before he started talking once again
“I love you ye? Don’t let that boy ruin you. He lost you by his own fault. You did nothing” he rambled on about how you should have been treated better and how Ez lost the best thing he could ever have. But you knew he was wrong.
Ezekiel always treated you like a queen, your brother met him one time and barely spoke to him for longer than five minutes. As far as you were concerned you brother didn't know anything about him
While he was rambling you were looking into the distance, mainly just looking at the sky but you could have sworn you saw his truck drive past, but maybe you were just seeing things right? His truck wasn't the only one, there were probably millions of them.
-
The party was in full swing, people were everywhere, the room full of patches from all over. mass amounts of people from charters were visiting in celebration of a new deal with the sons, leaving Ez to tend the bar along with some hang rounds.
Wiping down the bar he couldn't help but think about you for the billionth time today. He knew you two broke things off but it didn't mean you had to leave everyone from the club behind as well as him.
"Bro what the hell is wrong with you?" Angel questioned
"Nothing" shrugging his shoulders he dropped the bar rag and turned to get angel a beer from the fridge behind him
"Stop lyin man, what's going on in that head?" Angel knew his own brother better then to believe 'nothing' was going on with him, something was always going on up in Ez's brain, even if he didn't admit it
"I dunno man, I just think it's weird how y/n left us you know?" Ez shrugged again, handing angel a beer
"She didn't leave us. She’s distancing herself. Got a lot of family shit going on right now" he explained, you kept Angel in the loop with everything, after all he was your best friend even before Ez and you got together, if Ez wouldn't tell you something- Angel would.
"Just think it’s weird" Ez repeated, messing with the bar rag once again
"Ya well she’s coming tonight”
Before Ez could respond coco stood next to Angel
"Who’s comin?"
The brothers looked at each other for a moment before angel came up with an idea
"Just some random bird for our boy scout to bed"
"My man," Coco chuckled "finally gonna get your dick wet huh?"
----
You knew this was a bad idea, you knew he would be here.
Was he going to be with another girl? Actually stupid question, of course he would be
Opening your phone you sent angel a text
‘I'm like five minutes out but i swear to God if you abandon me tonight i will hit you so hard that you can't remember anything for a week’
At least he would walk in with you so you weren’t alone right?
---
Angel stood up abruptly in the middle of a conversation he was having
"Where the fuck you going?" Coco questioned, lighting a cigarette from the chair he was sitting in
"Meet a friend"
"A friend huh?"
"Yeah...maybe you'll like her" Angel replied before grabbing his beer and retreating towards the door.
---
Walking through the gate you saw the front of the club littered with patches. Some of them were from different charters. Weird, angel never mentioned other charters visiting, by the look of the outside, you could only imagine the clubhouse itself is packed with people.
Scanning the crowd you spotted the person in question walking towards you
“Hey stupid face”
“good evening stupid head”
“that's basically the same thing i just said”
"oh shut up i couldn't think of insult fast enough”
Pulling you into a hug you couldn't help but feel a little more relaxed. Angel was always like an older brother to you, an annoying one at that but still a brother.
It had been weeks since you saw him, being back in his company made you feel safe again, almost like a sense of home
He placed a kiss on your temple “We missed you here”
“Yeah, I know” letting him go you looked around, mainly to see if any of the other guys were in sight but also to see if coco was around, expecting to be attacked as per usual.
Angel took notice of you scanning the crowd “He's inside”
“Hmm? Sorry I got no idea what you're on about”
Pulling you into his side he wrapped an arm around your shoulders “sure ya don't”
Walking inside you scanned the crowd once again, thankfully coco was nowhere to be seen for the moment and most of the guys were spread out around the room. Bishop and Taza were playing pool, Gilly and Creeper were sitting at the table in a conversation whilst hank sat opposite them looking at something on his phone, Ez was tending the bar like usual but this time he was accompanied by some hang rounds.
At least there isn't girls hanging off him yet
“C'mon let’s get a drink huh” angel lightly shoved you towards the bar playfully.
“No”
“No?” his eyebrows raised playfully
“No and if you try to make me go over there with you i promise i will embarrass you” you laughed
“Fine”
After he got the drinks you both sat at a table in the corner for a while talking, the majority of the topics were about what had been happening while you were distanced from everyone.
Eventually Coco spotted you two and joined in the conversation. you sat talking to the two of them while everyone else was up to their own things, you didn't mind, the both of them combined made for some very interesting storys, the conversation could never die. After around 10 minutes, Angel had left you two alone saying he “wasn't bout to listen to this shit ''- which was super ironic considering the topic of conversation was about modifications for a new bike coco had brought a few days ago
“How does your bike handle anyway? I heard they are bottom heavy and hard to manoeuvre sometimes” you questioned. overtime Ez had taught you some things about bikes, mainly when he was just rambling about random things not thinking you were really paying attention to what he was saying
“It’s alright i guess, sometimes it slips when I lean too far on corners, other times it tends to not wanna go the way I need to but other than that it handles pretty well, arms hurt like a bitch after long ride though” he explained
Nodding your head you understood where he was coming from, having your arms at that angle for hours must have taken its toll
“Ay '' he nodded his head towards someone behind you, Turning your head you saw it was Ez walking through the door with Angel, seemingly engrossed in some type of conversation they were having.
Despite spotting him earlier you only scanned over his appearance but now you actually took a good look at him, he looked different, not much but still different from before. His hair was in the same style but it little more grown out then usual, his facial hair had grown out a little too. His eyes had bangs underneath them and his face looked drained.
All in all he looked like shit.
“You know he’s not the same without you right?” bringing your attention back to coco you couldn't help but feel like you were to blame, maybe if you fought harder of him you two would have never split.
“You two spoke since?” he questioned
“Nope...I got a few drunk calls saying he was sorry but other than that. No” you shook your head.
After you two first broke up he called you around a week later rambling about something but since he was slurring his words- you could barely understand anything he was saying. You got about 2 voicemails of him saying he was sorry and how he fucked up but- you never spoke to him, never texted him back when he would ask you if you were coming to one of the parties.
“The amount of times we've had to stop him from drunk calling you is unreal”
Playing with the label on the beer bottle in front of you, you thought about what coco said- clearly Ez had attempted to talk to you at some point, but why? The whole breakup was because he needed “space” to deal with some things so why was he trying to talk to you?
“He wanted space, I gave it to him” you shrugged, slowly peeling off the label
“Didn’t mean you had to leave us too” looking up from the bottle you saw coco was now avoiding your gaze
“Yeah...I know” maybe it was wrong of you to drop everyone, but being around them would have only brought back memories of you and Ez. At the time it seemed like a good idea to distance yourself from all of the guys, but now, despite only being here for a hour, you could tell how much you really missed being around them.
“You know he’s walking over here right?” Dropping your head onto the table you let out a sigh causing coco to laugh “I’ll leave you two alone huh?” lifting your head up you looked at him with a facial expression as if to say ‘don’t leave me’ but he did anyway
“Y/n” his voice was low, almost as if he didn’t believe he was saying your name again
“Ezekiel”
“Can we talk?”
“We are talking” sitting up straight you turned in your seat to look at him. He looked even worse up close- the bags under his eyes were alot darker then they seemed from a distance, they made it appear like he hadn’t slept for days, you couldn’t help but notice he had a bruise slowly forming on top of his right eyebrow.
“What happened there?”
He looked confused for a moment till you pointed to his eyebrow
“Oh I erm…got into a fight.....with a wall” his eyes were trained onto the floor, almost like he was ashamed.
You hummed in response not sure how to respond without laughing
“So how have you been?” he questions
“Good i guess..how about you?”
“Alright I suppose”
What followed was nothing but silence between the both of you, neither of you knowing what to say. The sounds of other people talking and rock music became almost deafening as the two of you stayed silent
“Well this got really awkward fast” you spoke up causing Ez to laugh a little
“Yeah..yeah it did” he nodded
After a few more moments you stood from your chair “I'm just gonna-”
“Yeah go, i get it go ahead” he finished your sentence for you.
Nodding you quickly made your way outside, the yard was almost empty by now, people had either left for the night or had moved inside.
You spotted Angel sitting on the front steps fiddling with one of the rings on his hand while looking at something in the distance. You sat beside him in silence, neither of you even attempting to make conversation but simply just being trapped within your own minds.
When you and Ez broke up you knew things would change, you knew the two of you probably wouldn't be able to have the same conversations you would before, but you never expected them being so awkward.
Maybe it was just because the wound was still pretty fresh, after all it had only been just over a month
After a few minutes you heard the door behind you open as someone stepped out, seconds later a figure sat next to you, looking over you saw it was coco
“What we doin? havin a lil moment to yourselves” he asked lighting up a cigarette and offering the both of you one
“Yep” Angel responded, taking one and lighting it before looking somewhere in the distance once again. All three of you sat for a few minutes just looking at seemingly nothing in particular.
Maybe it won't be like this forever? At some point there has got to be a time where you can come to the club without feeling awkward because ez’s here.
You heard the clubhouse door open once more behind you and once again, you didn't turn around, but coco did
"Ay man sit" you heard him say as he snapped his fingers at space left beside him to whoever stepped out from the door. It didn't take long for whoever it was to sit down.
Much like he did with you and Angel, Coco offered the person a cigarette which they must of silently declined from the lack of verbal exchange.
There has to be a point when you and the club can all hang out together like before....there has to be a stage where you and Ez can talk like normal people without it being awkward….right?
Seemingly out of no were Coco spoke up, nodding his head towards two stacked benches on the opposite side of the yard "You think i could clear those in one attempt?"
Angel was the first to respond "Absolutely fucking not" he paused for a moment- looking where the benches were stacked "but I'd love to see you try"
"I bet $50 you fail and fall face first" someone spoke up, looking to your left you finally realized who stepped out earlier ..Ezekiel
"Bet, ill prove you wrong" coco stood, taking off his kutte and placing it on the stair rail "you two wanna place any bets?" Coco looked at you and Angel
"Nope, I'm good" you shook your head
"I bet $50 that you don't clear it" Angel responded
"You have no faith pretty boy" coco responded, shaking his head as he started to walk over to the benches
"This is going to end in a hospital trip" you stated making both Angel and Ez laugh
All three of you watched as coco seemed to examine the height of the two benches, planning the distance he would have to run to gain enough speed to propel himself over them and how he would land the jump
"You think he's gonna snap his nose again?" Ezekiel questioned
"Definitely" both you and Angel replied
All three of you watched as coco began to run towards the benches, from your angle it looked as if he could clear it....you were wrong.
Seconds later coco was laying face first in the dirt, one leg was on the floor while the other was stuck in a piece of wood on the bench that had broke underneath his weight
"I think i broke my nose" you heard coco exclaimed causing all three of you to laugh. The few people who were still outside drew their attention to the scene and started laughing too when they realized what happened.
"Ill go get some paper towels" you said, still laughing.
Maybe this was a sign nothing had changed between the four of you, that you could all still hang out and do stupid stuff like before
Maybe nothing has to change

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 26, part two
(Masterpost) (Other Canary Stuff)
Warning! Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
Content note: This episode has a lot of lightning, but this post does not have lightning flashes--I’m using mostly stills for those parts, or I’ve snipped out the unfriendly frames before giffing.
Qing-Jie
Having successfully ruined Jin Guangshan’s party plan to get the Yin Tiger seal, Wei Wuxian dashes off to tell Wen Qing where her brother is. She hops up to hit the road with him, but then sorta-faints because she’s starving. In a rare moment of tenderness between these two, he catches her and gently sits her down again.
Normally they’re busy out-toughing each other, both before and after this moment, but right now Wen Qing is openly vulnerable. Wei Wuxian responds to that, predictably, with all of his kindness and with his usual slew of unwise, impossible-to-keep promises.
As she eats the bread he’s brought her--a parallel to an important piece of bread in his early life--he says they have to believe in Wen Ning’s survival. Cut to: Wen Ning, not surviving.
I mean, yes, yes, he’s only mostly dead, but he’s never going to be fully alive again, so.
24 Hour Party People
Back at the party, Jin Guangyao, deliberately, I think, goes to offer his pops a drink while his pops is still super furious and looking for someone to take it out on. The servant lady is like, better you than me, pal, and helps JGY get his drink ready. Pops, predictably, knocks the drink onto Jin Guangyao.
(more behind the cut)
Lan Xichen is standing by with a hanky and a face full of worry. Lan Xichen is so Lanny that he thinks JGY needs to go change clothes after getting clear alcohol spilled on him, rather than just letting it evaporate and smelling pleasantly of booze for the rest of the evening like a normal party guest.
JGY launches into a criticism of Wei Wuxian, which Lan Wangji listens to very carefully, frowning. Lan Xichen, Nie Huasang and Jiang Cheng listen as well, and don’t speak up.
A Clear Conscience
Then Lan Wangji *literally* steps out of his brother’s shadow, and speaks in defense of Wei Wuxian. This right here is Lan Wangji’s turning point, as far as I’m concerned. Xichen is gazing at JGY, totally on board with JGY’s spin of the situation, and his shadow falls away from Lan Wangji’s face as LWJ steps forward.
Lan Wangji says, isn’t what WWX said true? JGY puts on his customer service smile and says that the truth isn’t something you’re supposed to go around saying out loud.
I’d like to say this is what’s wrong with cultivator society but this is really a universal human thing; every society has rules about upsetting the social order, and they are very frequently at odds with basic compassion and morality.
Nie Huaisang and Jiang Cheng stay silent but Lan Xichen goes and throws Wei Wuxian under the bus carriage, saying his character has changed.
Lan Wangji nods decisively at this, and bows to Lan Xichen, silently asking permission to follow Wei Wuxian. Lan Xichen grants permission, telling Lan Wangji to do his best. Lan Xichen probably thinks he and Lan Wangji are in agreement, in this moment, but that nod of Lan Wangji’s was nothing of the kind.
That nod was Lan Wangji agreeing with himself; he is going to try to bring Wei Wuxian back but he is also going to listen to him. Meanwhile Lan Xichen is tying himself in knots to appease Jin Guangyao. The divergence between the brothers will just grow, from this point onwards.
Lan Wangji leaves to go follow his boyfriend conscience, while Jiang Cheng continues to silently listen to the commentary of others, and gets so mad he crushes a wine cup.
It Was A Dark and Stormy Night.
Wen Qing and Wei Wuxian arrive at the prison camp, and the first person they encounter is Granny, with a defaced Wen Banner in her hand and Wen Yuan on her back.
Whenever I read a meta or a fic that talks about how the juniors are so sweet partly because they are “untouched by the war” I want to point to this moment. A-Yuan endures an absolute truckload of war trauma by the time he’s four years old, and while Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji both deserve a lot of credit for saving him at great risk to themselves, Granny and Uncle Four are the first heroes of A-Yuan’s story. His kind, mellow personality has a lot in common with theirs.
This is followed by an eternity of Wen Qing running around asking if anyone’s seen her brother. Eventually Wei Wuxian gets tired of this and gathers the guards together, threatening them with Chenqing.
He doesn’t need to play it; just holding it up has every Jin dude instantly kneeling and scared.
The guards send him and Wen Qing go to a giant field of corpses, where Wen Qing runs around checking to see if any of them is her brother. Wei Wuxian starts off kind of detached and angry, but eventually snaps out of it, tucks away his flute and starts helping her to search.
Wen Qing finds Wen Ning, mostly-dead with a lure flag speared into his belly. Wei Wuxian grimly takes in the situation from across the field of corpses.
When he arrives at Wen Qing’s side he sees this talisman in Wen Ning’s hand.
This is the talisman that Wei Wuxian made for Wen Ning back in Gusu summer school, before the war. It’s the one that Wen Ning was wearing at his waist when they met up after the massacre of Lotus Pier. It’s supposed to literally protect Wen Ning from having his spiritual consciousness snatched, as well as being a symbol of Wei Wuxian’s sense of responsibility for, and affection for, Wen Ning.
Wei Wuxian, understandably, loses his shit at this point. Less understandably, he is about to decide that the best way to express his sorrow and rage is to re-animate the corpse of his friend, right in front of the corpse’s sister. Like, seriously, dude. Dude.
Ghost General
This super-questionable decision leads to one of the most badass sequences in the show, which is unfortunately chock full of lightning flashes, so not everyone can watch it. Wei Wuxian and his flute and swirls of resentful energy come marching out of the darkness of the corpse field, back to the guards.
The guards have decided to slaughter all of the prisoners and then run away, which would be a good plan except they should really have skipped right to the running away part of things. When Wei Wuxian accuses them of killing the prisoner in the corpse field, they claim that the Wens have a habit of falling off of a hill and dying. Wei Wuxian can relate.
At this point Wei Wuxian summons up Wen Ning 2.0, ultra badass edition, who comes flying through the air with his odd, straight-armed fighting stance and cool solid-black eyes and rock-and-roll hair.
Soundtrack: *Four Sticks*
Wen Ning proceeds to whale on the guards and scare the shit out of his relatives.
Then Wen Qing shows up and begs Wei Wuxian to stop. She explains that Wen Ning is only mostly dead. Like, if he was fully dead would she be okay with this?
Wei Wuxian tries to reel Wen Ning in and realizes that he is not actually in control of Wen Ning. Ok, see, right from the first day of Wen Ning 2.0, WWX is aware that his control is iffy. Why does he think he’s going to be able to control him later?
Anyway, this is where we learn Wen Ning’s grown-up name is Wen Qionglin. Wei Wuxian yells this name, and Wen Ning looks up like a cat hearing the “food noise,” and then proceeds to get control of himself.
This is such a nice symbolic moment, that will be replayed later in the temple, when Wen Ning saves Jin Ling from Baxia.
Wen Ning has a remote-code-execution OS vulnerability throughout the story; his soul is at risk of being stolen, and he is magically controlled by Wei Wuxian, Xue Yang, Su She, and Baxia. Meanwhile Wen Qing, Wei Wuxian, and random kids on the street mostly treat him as a child, despite his clear adult capabilities. Wen Ning’s journey in The Untamed is at least partly about asserting his full adulthood, and his ability to overcome magical control is directly connected to that journey.
After getting Wen Ning to chill, Wei Wuxian calls the floating resentful energy back into his own body, which looks about as comfortable as swallowing a burp.
On the plus side, apparently resentful energy keeps your hair dry even when it’s raining.
Wei Wuxian should take a page from the guards’ book and slaughter all the Jin witnesses to this situation, but he decides to be the better person and let them live. They go running off down the road, where they encounter Lan Wangji and give him the 411, saying that Wei Wuxian resurrected dead people.
Meanwhile Wei Wuxian collects Wen Qing--half-fainted, again, in an echo of the start of their journey--and collects the Dafan Mountain Wen group, who are hiding, wisely. When they see Wen Ning, Uncle Four and some others start to freak out, but Wei Wuxian tells them that fierce corpses are cool, and they all grab horses and mount up.
Where Are You Going?
Lan Wangji is waiting for them, nonconfrontationally indulging in some visual poetry while he waits.
In a show where every prop is exquisitely, carefully designed to enhance our understanding character, his Gusu-toned umbrella reveals surprising red and yellow threads woven in, right above his eye line as he looks at Wei Wuxian.
Wei Wuxian speaks first, saying “you came to stop me?” Lan Wangji doesn’t answer, but asks him where he’s going. Then Lan Wangji warns him that he’s about to abandon orthodoxy forever, if he follows through.
Wei Wuxian challenges this idea of orthodoxy, asking if Lan Wangji remembers the promise they made together, back in Gusu. It’s worth noting that they both appear to think of it as a co-promise, even though Lan Wangji didn’t speak aloud at the time.
The conversation will continue in the next episode, because what’s better than a rainy romantic cliffhanger?
Soundtrack: Four Sticks by Led Zeppelin

A Christmas Heist Pt. II - Going Undercover
Pairing: Bucky x Reader
Warnings: None, except an asshole Santa Claus, an immense word count, and a cute elf!Bucky
A/N: Hello, lovelies! Yikes, a day late. I’m very very sorry for putting this out later than said on the masterlist of this mini-series! Now, we are starting the mission, so things will be tense from here on out! I gotta thank my fabulous Bucket @world-of-aus for once again helping me with this one! As I’ve said before, this request is pushing out of my comfort zone and is helping me shape how I would like to write for mission-related works such as these! I apologize for this part being long, as I wanted this to capture the essence of the first day on site. As always, feedback and commentary are very much appreciated! Happy reading, lovelies! :)
My pinned masterlist can be found here!
A Christmas Heist Masterlist
You got out of the car with Bucky, having decided that it was best that you two came to the mall roughly the same time, while Steve would go sooner to the Apple Store. You took a breath as you waited for your boyfriend, adrenaline was already surging through your body, looking around for safety.
“Alright, so like we discussed, sweetheart, you’re going in first. I’ll wait 5 minutes before you come in, I’ll do a quick little floor check on the mall before “working” with you.”
“Uhuh..”
“And then we’ll-”
Bucky’s words slowly fade away, leaving you with your thoughts. Would this be foolproof? What if you accidentally slip? How many casualties would be counted should the worst of the worst-
“You alright, doll? You seem to be a bit nervous.”
You jump slightly, blushing as realized you were the one up in your head this time, sending your boyfriend a small smile. “Yeah, I’m ready. Just a tad nervous, Buck… worrying about you ya know,” you say, putting your earpiece on your ear, fixing your hair so it’s further hidden.
Bucky looks around a bit, making sure no one was there before cupping your cheeks to press his lips quickly to yours, giving you a reassuring kiss. “Come back to me, Y/N. You’re like a million miles away up in that head of yours,” he mutters, a hint of smile forming into your lips as he repeats your words from last night. That smile grew when you felt his smile form on your lips. “Mmm.. I know I know… I just don’t want to hurt anyone during this assignment.” You admit softly into his lips before he pulls away completely, rubbing your arms for comfort.
“You, Steve, and I are trying our hardest to avoid that, sweetheart. Like you said, it’s not the first time we’ve done this. We’ll be okay, just one step at a time.” This made you more confident than you were a few minutes ago. “One step at a time,” you repeat back more firmly with a nod.
“That’s my girl.” Giving Bucky's hand one final squeeze was enough to get you moving forward, a silent promise shared between the two of you that you would meet inside soon.
It’s quiet when you enter the mall, there’s not the usual hustle and bustle of what you were normally used to, but then again you were in this mall for an all too different reason other than leisure. This was for work, you repeat to yourself, looking around as you see employees make their own way to their respective stores alongside you, minding their own business. You are merely early. This is what the average person does when they go to work, you tell yourself. Well that is where the problem lies. You are more than just the average person, for your job had people’s lives at stake.
Bringing a hand up you pushed the comm further into your ear, head ducking slightly as you continued to walk the quiet plaza, “I’m in,” you murmured before you were straightening out eyes straight ahead as you continued to your destination. It was a minute, maybe two before you heard Bucky's deepened voice come through, “Right behind you, meet you in a few.”Those are the last few words you hear from him as you approach the toy store, “Visual on y/n,” you hear Steve’s voice come through. This made you jump in surprise, eyes darting to the Apple Store across you, only to see Steve wiping down the glass windows. A subtle wink gets thrown at you paired with a small reassuring smile, with you exchanging it before his eyes are returning back to the task at hand.
Glancing away you look up at the toy stores sign before looking at the double glass doors. Breathing in deeply you braced yourself. You guys could do this, you were trained agents, you could do this. Moving forward you’re pushing through the glass doors, from what you can see the store is fairly empty aside from the rows upon rows of toys that sat all around you. An overwhelming feeling hits you as you pause mid step in the doorway.
It was a beautiful sight to see, one that was truly a child’s paradise, for your eyes wandered all over the place in awe. There was a toy train chugging around the store, a big looking plastic house for kids to play in, a Christmas village display, stuffed toys, toys for toddlers, toys for kids, everything one can dream of. Wonderful aisles of toys surrounded many displays in an organized fashion. You realized this would be so crowded within an hour, hence why it was a good spot for Hydra to carry out their plans here. Such a shame that horrid people would take advantage of a wonderful place like this for their own benefit. However, you looked to your left, seeing the place where the mall Santa Claus would be. You then looked through the window, seeing the Apple Store in clear view. No wonder Santa’s chair was where it was. Noted, you say in your head before wandering around the Toy Store, looking for the manager.
“Never been in a toy shop before?”
A quiet gasp leaves your lips as your eyes dash to the middle of the aisles. A burly man stands there almost leaning against the shelf as he takes your form in, eyeing your bundled self up and down.
You hold back the shudder that threatens to roll through you. Pulling on a tight lipped smile you finally find your voice, “Not necessarily that I haven’t been in one before, just haven’t quite seen one like this, it’s lovely,” you replied.
The man moves forward, almost as if he’s coming from the shadows, “You must be the new hire,” he grins, “Now tell me where did they find a Mrs. Claus as gorgeous as yourself.”
Oh god.
“I can assure you looks had nothing to do with it,” you ground out, “personality on the other hand well -” The man’s toothy smile grows wider as he steps closer, your fingers itching to find the comm hidden in your ear. “I think I’ll have plenty of time to get to know that personality of yours -- Mrs. Claus.”
“Is that how you talk to all your female coworkers?” came his voice from behind you, an edge to his tone. You tried your hardest not to tense up, as you recognized the voice, hoping that you two would not look suspicious or that you knew each other. The man in front of you looked over your shoulder with a raised brow, “And you are?” Bucky moved around you, body unknowingly shielding yours from the man in front of you.
Hand stuck out he replies, “Buddy, Buddy the elf.”
Your childish side gets the best of you, a choked snort leaving your mouth and raised eyebrows wrinkle your forehead, clearing your throat as the burly man scoffs at your boyfriend before he shakes Bucky’s gloved hands. You hoped that they would not recognize him, watching their interaction carefully.
“Mmm… I see… you’re the new hire for the...elf… playing like a smart ass already, huh? Not sure if the manager would like that.” The man tests, letting go of Bucky’s hand and crossing his arms, eying Bucky in a judgmental manner. A small smirk graces Bucky’s lips as his hands are now back in his pockets. “I assure you, I’m going to do my job correctly and won’t cause the store any problems. But, I think the manager will not enjoy hearing that you are hitting on an employee, or possibly hitting on a customer, as Santa Claus.” He retorts back. All of the tension that has been built was then forced to be forgotten when the manager greets you three.
“Good morning, Brock! I see you have met our newbies!” The manager exclaims, arms opening wide in a welcoming manner before he claps his hands together. You resisted widening your eyes, for you have heard of this name before. Some uncertainty came back to your mind, then. Brock can only grunt and nod, “Yes I did, sir.” As he glares at Bucky as Bucky shakes the manager’s hand and stares at you as you follow suit, he couldn’t help but feel something off. But what exactly was off? He decided to wave it off, for it could possibly be just the cockiness of this new worker. You on the other hand, gives him a perfect opportunity to perhaps get to know you better. You were far from bad looking and seemed naive first glance. He could deal with that, he concluded to himself, lost in his own thoughts as the manager showed the two of you around the store. Rumlow scoffed at himself before he went off to put his suit on.
It was not too long until the manager finished going over the respective jobs with you and Bucky. It eased your nerves knowing all you had to do was be nice with kids under a costume. It eased you even more knowing that this Rumlow guy leaves immediately after shift. You held your costume and wig, making your way to the women’s locker room to get dressed, only to be stopped by the manager.
“I hate to put this on you and George, Mary,” the manager starts, addressing your guys’ undercover names. “But do you think you and George can put up more decorations in the later part of your shift? We want to add a more Christmas spirit to this store, and the hours to see Santa today ends a good two hours before the closing of the store.”
“A-alrigh-”
“Oh! And you’ll be an elf too, so you can have a good reason to decorate without sticking out like a sore thumb, you know? Would ya look at that, Buddy the Elf with a partner right?”
Wait a minute, Fury did not tell you this part. You knew playing Mrs. Claus was going to be a big stretch, but Mrs. Claus and an elf?! You can hear Steve fail terribly at refraining from letting out a little snort. Cool reference to Elf, I love George’s creativity, it’s such a good idea, and here in New York too!” The manager exclaims excitedly, only receiving a tight lipped smile in return from you. “Then… I’ll be Jovie,” you manage to squeak out, before the manager exits. You groan to yourself before you change into your first costume of the day.
Although it was quite draining to deal with many fussing kids, your time as Mrs. Claus went by smoothly, for you found satisfaction in helping these kids have a happier holiday meeting Santa and his Mrs. Sadly, it was hard to find out where to find this hard drive on Steve’s end of the assignment, but Fury was right, for the gaze of this Santa Claus was for the most part fixed right on the Apple Store. He would find time between kids to murmur some quick orders or questions into his own comms, trusting the bustle of the store to deafen his conversation. However, you were able to hear some words leave his mouth, always making a personal note to hear him better later and to not make that mistake during Santa hours. Sadly, the search will have to continue tomorrow.
You were now dressed in your elf costume, the label Jovie now pinned on your costume (haha..) as you set up a ladder next to the big Christmas tree in the middle of the store. After some pictures, you finally had time to do what was asked of you. You were focused on your work until…
“You are very good at decorating that tree.”
You look behind and below at your boyfriend, laughing as you take in his cute green elf uniform and his tights. Your laugh only got less contained from there, as you realized his muscular thighs are definitely being shown and the top does not hide his muscular torso either. His gloved hands were now on his sides with a small playful scowl as you had to put the ornament down from laughing too hard.
“Oh, that’s no way to treat Buddy the Elf.”
“It’s just… it’s just too funny!” You say between laughs, causing Bucky to smile before decorating the tree alongside you. As you two decorate, you managed to make a compromise with the manager, allowing yourselves to show up to the store earlier than everyone to have the rest of the store decorated. With that being said, to your luck, the manager gave you both a copy of the key to the store by the end of the shift. Very lucky. You both walked out on separate times to the car, carrying out the bags with the uniforms that you both got today. You still did not let go of the elf costume, laughing much harder in the car on the way back to the apartment complex.
“Y/N, sweetheart, you don’t see me laughing at your costume!”
“Yeah, because I’m cute in it at the very least!” “I agree, but-”
“BUT MAN, THAT ELF COSTUME WAS JUST TOO FUNNY! Cute, but funny! Like who ever sees a brawny man play Buddy the freaking Elf?!”
“At least I don’t have to pretend to have wrinkles going in as Mrs. Claus!”
“Fair point.”
Steve met with you two at yours and Bucky’s apartment for dinner, having paid for takeout. “No luck with the hard drive unfortunately. I don’t even know where to start.” Steve sighs. “Well it’s not like you would, punk. That place looks big, and if the toy store’s back room is huge, I am sure Apple does too.” Bucky replies with a shrug finishing the last of his food. “Well, Buck and I have the excuse to come early to decorate. The manager gave us a copy of the key. Hopefully, we can find some leads from Rumlow’s locker. Although I doubt it, it can’t hurt to try.” You reply. Steve only nods, staying quiet as he finishes his food and throws the trash away. He was thinking.
“Alright, Rogers, I know you have something in your mind, so spill,” You push, leaning over against the table with a raised brow. Steve couldn’t help the smirk that formed on his face.
“A key too, huh?”
“What do you mean a key too, punk?” Bucky asks with a chuckle.
“I got one for the Apple Store too,” Steve replies with a smile, taking it out of his pocket and holding it up.
“Already?! But that’s Apple Steve, you’re new!” You start, cutting off when Steve stays quiet.
“Steven Grant Rogers don’t tell me that you stole it-”
“We are not stealing, we’re borrowing, doll, now hear me out,” Steve cuts you off with a firm tone. You could only gawk at him in surprise and cross your arms. “Alright I’m impressed. So what are we doing?” Steve smiles.
“Alright, we’ll make it a point to go early tomorrow. All of us. You do a run through of the locker room and watch out for any leads. I’ll look around Apple too. We’ll go from there as we go along.”
A nod of approval comes from you and Bucky, an excited smile coming from Bucky. You couldn’t help but giggle as you fully processed what measures Steve already took on his first day in, giving you nothing to do but shrug.
“Well I guess that settles it. Let’s rest up. We got quite the next few days coming up.”

Masterlist & Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Cleveland, Ohio
Buffy woke up groggy. She was still in her bed. It was still dark outside. Her eyelids felt heavy as she squinted through the dim, struggling to focus. After a disorienting minute, she shook the fog from her head and glanced at her alarm clock resting on the nightstand, its only fixture. She had meant to decorate. She would....eventually.
The segmented, glowing red numbers on her alarm informed her it was four in the morning. That couldn't be right. Could it? Had she really only slept for an hour? Add sleep deprivation to the list. Whatever list that was. List of future problems maybe.
A light patter of rain beat down on the roof and decorated the windows with beads that shimmered with the occasional passing headlights. Buffy couldn't recall forecasting rain that night. It had been still and cloudless all night. Good patrol weather. A distant crack of thunder sounded and the windows vibrated softly.
Buffy frowned as she swung her legs out of bed. When her bare feet hit the cold wooden floor she was irritated to notice a healthy coating of dirt scattered on the ground and clinging to her soles. She would have to clean it up later. It could wait. No way did she plan on going all vacuum crazy at four a.m. She wasn't that lost to reason.
The house rattled again with a closer shock of thunder as Buffy made her way downstairs. It was kind of nice. The storm. It broke up the quiet. Buffy reached the kitchen and snatched the kettle from the stovetop. She filled it with water without bothering to turn on the lights and switched the burner on. A quick cup of tea and then back to sleep. It was something her mom had done. If she woke up in the middle of the night restless, her mom would somehow know and... what did she say? She would say something. Buffy's hand slipped slightly and the kettle dropped the rest of the way to the burner. She jumped at the sudden noise just as some water that had spilled hissed against the now red hot grills.
Buffy held a hand to her head and winced as she noticed a fresh bruise she didn't remember getting. She sighed as she rummaged through her cupboards looking for the box of tea bags. She didn't have to look too far. The cupboards were dangerously empty. A grocery run was definitely called for. The joys of living alone.
As she grabbed an old UC Sunnydale mug from the dish rack she noticed the answering machine was flashing green again. Another message. Someone needed to cut back on the caffeine. Then again, maybe it was Giles. Maybe the time was more reasonable in England. Buffy was too tired to think about the exact time difference.
The tea kettle started whistling and Buffy redirected her attention, pulling the kettle off and fixing her cup of tea. She had never really liked tea. But her mom had drank it and Giles drank it and so it was just something she did now. She let the cup steep while she went to check her messages.
As she reached out her hand she noticed that her sleeve was torn. And it was her favorite shirt. Buffy picked at the ripped seam in the cute white top she had bought for Dawn's graduation. Her brows furrowed. Why had she worn it on patrol? She never wore it on patrol. She didn't wear it last night.
Buffy spun around, suddenly uneasy. But she heard nothing but the light taps of rain. The kitchen was dark and empty without barely even a slinking shadow. Moving quietly and deliberately, she made her way to every door in the house and checked the locks. Everything was locked, bolted, and chained. Just as she had left it. At least, she was pretty sure that was how she had left it.
What was that thing her mom always said? Something to do with tea. Or had it been coffee? Hot chocolate? Something about tiny marshmallows?
A note a panic started to rise in the back of her mind, but it was impossible to pinpoint why. She made her way back to the answering machine and hit the button.
"Hey B," Faith's voice came through. "Look I-" Her voice cut off, then returned with a waver. "I don't know. There's just- something's wrong. I woke up in the cemetery last night. No idea how I got there. And you never got back to me... it's been a week. I need help. Call me."
Buffy's face paled and she staggered away from the phone. A week? A week since Faith called last. It couldn't be, she-
She couldn't remember anything.

Chicago, Illinois
"Where's Willow?" Spike asked, more than a little irritated. "I'm sorry but your being on the case doesn't exactly strike me as reassuring. Where's the witch?"
Andrew had made himself comfortable on the one chair Spike owned. Bit of a cheeky bastard that one. Barging into someone's home and stealing his chair. Next thing he's gonna start raiding the fridge.
Andrew raised his hands. "Hey now, patience is a virtue."
"Don't have any virtues." Spike pressed off the wall and moved to grab his jacket.
Andrew gave another nervous grin. "Right. Well. She's in Cleveland. You know..." He seemed to struggle for words. "Working on it. It's a bit of a mess right now... well, everywhere."
Spike slung his coat on and began buckling his boots. "Does she know?"
"Willow?"
Spike looked up from what he was doing with a frown. "Buffy."
The name felt strange. He hadn't said it out loud in years. No one to say it to.
"None of them know what's happening," Andrew answered, his face darkening. "We haven't been able to risk informing them. At least, not yet."
Yet. Spike hated that word. Only reason to use it was to put off some horrible thing or another.
"Where's Giles? He have anything in that bookish brain of his that'll... help?"
Andrew shook his head. "Not yet. But he's-"
"Workin' on it. Right," Spike finished, straightening up. "Guess it's time for a little field trip then."
Andrew's face brightened up. "Oh you're gonna love the car! It's got those special glass windows... you know so you don't turn into powder and all. And," he leaned in conspiratorially, "it's a total chick magnet."
Spike raised an eyebrow at him. "Right. So I guess it's just the burning dash to the car then. Brilliant."
Spike grabbed Andrew by the collar and tossed him out of the chair towards the door. He stumbled a bit before catching himself on the door and shooting Spike an indignant look.
"Hey! That's Armani!" Andrew protested as he straightened his suit and walked up the stairs.
***
On the drive to Cleveland, Andrew had been able to more or less catch Spike up to speed on what they knew so far. The color commentary on his own life was a bit less than welcome, but Spike had refrained from socking him in the jaw so that was something.
So far, it seemed that slayers all over the world were having strange lapses in memory. It started with small things, forgetting they had called someone, forgetting to meet up for coffee. Small things. But lately, things had been getting significantly worse. Huge blocks of time - days, weeks, for some even months - had been lost. No one was sure why. The girls seemed more or less normal during the blackouts. As far as anyone could tell. But they had been getting more and more reports of the same phenomenon. Slayers were losing time. Andrew seemed cagey to say much more than that on the subject.
Willow was already in Cleveland where both Buffy and Faith were stationed. If something was going wrong with slayers, it seemed only logical that they'd both be feeling the effects. Although no one had been able to reach either of them for days.
Giles was already on a flight from London. Xander was apparently also on his way, not that Spike really gave a damn. Xander was all but useless in most cases.
"So, anyone told Dawn?" Spike asked, breaking the silence that had fallen after Andrew had suggested a road game.
Andrew shook his head. Spike could almost say there was something like guilt there.
"Why not?" Spike pressed. "Think she'd want to know if the big sis was in danger."
"Buffy didn't want Dawn involved in any of this stuff," Andrew replied. "We're just respecting her wishes."
"She's already involved," Spike muttered under his breath. "Not like there's an out for any of us now, is there?"
Andrew didn't respond to that last bit. Spike wasn't sure if he was just pretending he hadn't heard or if silence was his answer. Guess it was all the same.
The thought of seeing the gang again was... uncomfortable. He hadn't seen any of them besides Andrew since he had burned to ashes and been buried beneath the rubble of Sunnydale. They didn't know he was alive. She didn't know he was alive.
He had planned on telling her. Eventually. It just... he wasn't sure if fair was the right word. But it just didn't seem fair to barge back into her life. He was dead. They saved the world. He died. End of story. She was free to go off and live a semi-normal life with a normal guy. At least, that was the lie he told himself. The truth was always worse.

I Think This Could Be the Start of a New Life (The Inc Den)
A/N: Oh hi 👋🏻. Here’s the first piece I guess. Figured I’d get everyone introduced. I hope you enjoy them because I love everyone dearly. so yeah.
Warnings: None? swearing I guess, but this is SFW
Summary: River would really like to stop being sexiled from their apartment.
Word Count: 4.5K
River was lounging on the couch in the main space of their apartment waiting for their roommate Lacey to come out of the bathroom. Literally lounging as one foot was propped up on the couch while the other stayed on the floor, careful to keep their still shoe wearing foot off the couch lest Nox or Lacey throw a fit. They were scrolling through their phone and half answering texts from their work group chat, Al and Roger debating pop music influences with commentary chimed in from time to time. They tapped their foot to some mental tune they were playing to keep themselves occupied, probably something that was on Drake’s playlist that they’d heard at work. River had to wonder if Nox was in the room and waiting for them to leave before coming out, but they were probably still curled up under Lacey’s bed. River threw their head back and let out a groan as they looked at the clock on their phone, Lacey’d been getting ready for nearly an hour.
“Lace, c’mon, do you want to get to Labyrinth before last call or not?” They called. They hardly remembered why they had agreed to accompany Lacey on her night out, she was just going to meet up with Scott and then sexile River from the apartment. Then River would have to call up Drake or Roger or Al and crash on their couch and they weren’t super keen on doing that tonight, their hips still hurt from the last time they’d had to. Lacey exited the bathroom with her red hair curled and her makeup done to perfection which was really impressive, River just wished it didn’t take an hour to do.
“Please tell me you’re not going out like that?” Lacey pleaded. River looked over their outfit: ripped jeans, Converse that had seen better days if the faded canvas and scuffed bottoms were any indication, and their “River’s Fight School” t-shirt that Lacey had made them after the “worst breakup she’d ever experienced” that had ended with River threatening to kick the ex’s ass. The outfit had been what they’d worn on shift and it’d been fine, mostly because unlike Roger, they never dressed to impress at the shop.
“I am, because may I remind you I’m not keen on impressing anyone. Besides, I wanna sleep comfortably on whatever couch I have to end up crashing on.” River replied with only a dash of bitterness sneaking into their tone. Lacey rolled her eyes and slid her boots on.
“Fine, fine, c’mon,” Lacey said. River stood up and grabbed their jacket off the couch arm.
“Nox, don’t tear the apartment apart!” River shouted into the apartment as they closed the door. Their typical parting words to the shadow monster who lived under Lacey’s bed.
The duo walked to Labyrinth with little fuss, minus Lacey occasionally twirling her hair around her finger. After six years of friendship, River knew that she was nervous about something.
“Are you and Scott okay?” They asked.
“What? Oh! Yeah, totally, work’s just been a pain and I’m… wait what —“
“You’re twirling your hair,” River said, miming the gesture by twisting their bangs out of their face. Lacey looked over at her finger and immediately dropped her hand.
“Damn you Rio,”
“You love me,” they were quick to interject with a smile. Lacey chuckled as they approached the bar. Frankie was standing outside and Lacey smiled up at the rakassha as she entered and River gave a mock salute. “Evenin’ Frankie,” they said and received a nod in response. River walked in and was almost smacked by the noise. Boys Don’t Cry was playing over the speakers as the bar and surrounding tables were crowded. As to be expected on a Friday night.
“Lacey Loo!” A male voice yelled from one of the side tables. Lacey grinned as she turned to greet the voice. Decked in a red plaid shirt and good jeans was Scott, the himbo werewolf boyfriend. He was a good guy, he and River got along when they hung out together, they were just… loud when it came to nightly extracurriculars, and that was before getting into the whole “is a werewolf” thing. River nodded that they were taking their leave as Lacey went over to Scott and they found themselves going to the bar. They waited for the bartender to finish dealing with some newbies as they took their seat in their usual stool. It was a miracle that as busy as the bar was, they managed to snag it. If River didn’t know any better, they might’ve thought that Chrissa was saving it for them. They watched the orc bartender work, she eventually turned around and seemed relieved to see River.
“Finally, someone easy,” she said with a sigh. River chuckled and smiled.
“Hey Chrissa, my usual?” They asked.
“One mildly large glass of Coca Cola, coming up.” She said as she pulled a glass and the soda gun. Chrissa filled it and slid it to River with a smile, garnished with its usual orange umbrella, a mental note to whoever came on shift after Chrissa or simply any passing waiter that River wasn’t drinking. They snuck a glance around the bar, trying to spot if there was anyone they knew hanging around. Other than Scott and Lacey cozied up in the corner, the answer seemed to be a resounding no, not that it wasn’t expected. River sighed and went back to focusing on Chrissa doing her work. They’d always had a fascination with watching the bartender work, it was always interesting, trying to follow Chrissa’s hands move and grab the bottles without thinking too hard about what they were, measuring the liquor with ease that only came from repeated movements and months of training before her first shift. Laurence had hired her after he got tired of working the bar himself, roughly around the same time River and Lacey had started frequenting the place when they first moved to the city.
Chrissa dealt with some customers at the other end of the bar before coming back in front of River.
“How was work by the way?” She asked. River shrugged in response.
“Wasn’t too bad, mostly just stayed in the basement with Drake.” They said, the record shop they worked at had a light dampened basement for those who didn’t do well with sunlight, which included their vampire coworker. River just liked it because it was usually a lot quieter than working the upstairs front counter. Even if Al sometimes sent the most ridiculous requests down to them.
“No wonder you’re so fucking pale,” Chrissa joked as she cleaned glasses. River just rolled their eyes.
“Hey, I’m pale because of a lot of reasons. The basement and Nox are just two of the reasons.” They remarked.
“How is Nox by the way?”
“Good, he’s mostly keeping to himself, deep cleaned the apartment the other day and I didn’t even know he could do that.” River remarked with a chuckle. Nox didn’t pay rent, but he usually made up for it by keeping the apartment clean when Lacey and them couldn’t. “I think he wrote something about wanting to try manifesting fully again while we were there, but we haven’t been in the apartment at the same time long enough.”
“Scott?” Chrissa asked. River groaned and nodded.
“I swear, it’d be easier if they just moved in together so I could start looking for other roommates, but they’re “still taking it slow”.” River remarked.
“Heads up, someone headed your way,” Chrissa said, her tone of voice taking on a dash of an edge. River furrowed their brow until they turned and saw a purple skinned woman stride toward them with a glint in their eyes that River had a sneaking suspicion they should fear.
“Do you?” River asked with a slight head tilt of confusion
“Yeah, if it were anyone else, I’d say run.”
“But it’s me so…”
“Oh I’m so looking forward to what comes next.” Chirssa said with a laugh as they moved down the bar a bit. The woman who finished coming over made a show of coming next to River without getting into their personal space. River watched them out of the corner of their eye, waiting to see what the play was.
“What’re you drinking sweetie?” The woman asked. She had wavy purple and pink hair with white ox horns that curved just below her chin.
“Just soda, I’m a DD tonight,” River lied. Not about the soda, but about being the DD. Really, they were waiting for the text that said they were out of an apartment tonight, but DD seemed like the safer excuse.
“Ah, the responsible friend, those are always nice to have, I’ve never had the luck,” the woman said with a smile. Her voice sounded like honey and it was pleasant to listen to. But between Chrissa’s warnings and this woman seeming to lay on thick whatever it was they were trying, River let a chuckle escape them. “What?” she asked with a slight tilt of her head.
“You’ve struck out Misae,” Chrissa said, coming back over with a martini glass with pink liquid in it. “You managed to pick the one ace human in the whole establishment.”
“I doubt that,” River remarked, the venn diagram of “ace being” and “human” in this establishment was a thin middle ground, but not one person thin. At least, as far as River knew. Misae however chuckled and smiled.
“Then I’m terribly sorry about all of that,”
“Ah don’t worry about it, you’re still pretty and I like getting hit on by pretty women even if they are trying to mildly charm me.” River said with a grin. “I’m River,” they said, offering their hand.
“Misae as Chirssa mentioned, charmed to meet you River,” She said, shaking hands with a gentle grace. When they released each other's hands, Misae furrowed her brow. “Nothing?” She asked which got another laugh out of River. “Not a thing,” they said.
“Wow…” Misae said with a sigh as she took a sip of her drink. River thought she’d leave and go find another target before a grin came onto her lips. “Would you mind coming and pranking my friends? I’ve got one who needs to be taken down a peg and I think you’ll be my secret weapon.” She asked. River looked over at Chrissa who gave a short nod.
“If it’s who I think it is, they’ll knock him down several pegs.” She said, River turned back to Misae who was still grinning, more conspiratorial than sensual, they snuck a quick glance to where Lacey and Scott were still curled up together before facing Misae again.
“Yeah why not,” they said as they popped off their barstool. Misae giggled and offered her hand, a hand that River took, as she dragged them to a booth tucked into the back of the bar, it was an eight person booth currently filled with three similar looking individuals, in so much as they weren’t human and definitely had demonic lineage. River did their best to not make assumptions, but judging on what Misae had brought them over to achieve, the members of the table were all various forms of incubi. Concubi? Was that the technical term? One on the edge of the seating arrangement was a light blue man with his horns curving up from his forehead and a darker blue coloring on his cheek that River had a hard time telling if it was a blush or makeup.
“Mis, who’s this?” He asked, his voice slightly higher than expected and a curious look on his face.
“This is River, River this is Azzy,” the light blue one who smiled slightly and River was pretty convinced that this was the closest they were going to experience an embarrassed incubus. “Kori,” a maroon inc who seemed to be the eldest of the group as he simply smiled at their appearance. He had long hair tied up in a bun and River felt a little bit more at ease seeing him. “And Joliet,” another maroon skinned being who was grinning, he also had tied up black hair, though he wore jewelry on his horns. “Where’s Rose?” Misae asked as she gestured for River to sit next to Joliet. She sat down next to Azzy across the table and River tried not to feel like they’d been suddenly thrown off the deep end.
“Bathroom.” Azzy said.
“Biblically speaking,” Joliet quickly added. River chuckled a little at the need for clarification. Something told them that for him it was actually necessary. They also suspected he was probably their target.
“Ah, well, that’s chill.”
“Mis what are you planning?” Kori asked with a slight glare directed at his friend. Ah, he was the dad friend.
“Oh nothing, just a lil bit of karmic justice,” Misae said with a grin that was anything but innocent. Joliet leaned over to River and whispered in their ear.
“Blink twice and I’ll get you out of here,” he said with a smirk. River stared at him with a smirk of their own and Joliet broke into a laugh. “Oh they’re good,”
“Seriously Mis, what’s going on?” Kori asked.
“It’s payback for Rose stealing my mark last week.” Misae said.
“And how is this gonna be payback?” Kori asked. “You just put a perfectly beautiful human in front of him, if anything all this is going to do is insure none of us sleep tonight,” he said.
“Oh you’ll see,” Misae said, throwing a wink River’s way. River tried to not blush at being called beautiful and simply kept their game face on.
“What’ll Kor see?” A navy blue inc asked. He wore a grey t-shirt and dark black jeans and River saw the issue. Between golden eyes and a charisma that dripped off of him, even as unaffected as River was, he knew who and what he was and was well aware that manipulating people was second nature. He’d been looking over at Kori before scanning the table and landing on River. “Oh… oh hello,” he said. His voice was warmer than Misae’s was, more a whiskey than a true honey, but it didn’t hit River the way they imagined he intended. “If you’d scootch in sugar,” he said. To play along, River did so, pressing a little closer to Joliet in the process. River snuck a glance at the others who all looked a little nervous, even Misae, but River softly shook their head, hiding it by pushing their bangs off their forehead a bit. “Now, hello. I’m Rosair, you can call me Rose,” he said as he offered his hand to shake. River took it with a smirk of their own.
“Nice to meet you Rose, River,” they said. Rosair took their hand and kissed the back of it and River chuckled. “You do this to all the pretty people who cross your path?” They asked.
“Yes,”
“Then I can see why Misae and Chrissa put me up to this,” they said with a chuckle. Rosair furrowed his brow to which River only grinned. “I’m ace Rose, you’re just pretty.” Rosair looked over at Misae who was grinning.
“Payback’s a bitch Rosie,” she said.
“Ah no matter, you’re still here.” he said with a small smirk that seemed to indicate he wasn’t done yet.
“Sure,” River said as they tapped his shoulder. “So, other than trying to pick up people at bars, what do you lot do?” They asked with a tilt of their head. Even Misae looked a little surprised at the question. “What? You think I’m just gonna go back to the bar and go back to sitting alone? C’mon now, you guys are not that dumb.” Joliet broke out of the stunned silence first with a laugh.
“You’ll have to forgive them, they’re very used to transactional interactions and have not quite figured out just normal interactions, I work at a tattoo parlor.” He said with a smile.
“Interesting, Kori?” River asked, glancing a little around Joliet.
“Oh uh, I work at a bakery. Mostly donuts and cake.” He said.
“I’ll definitely have to try it some time, assuming you’re any good,”
“I’m mostly the counter, but Mandy, who actually owns the place, is quite good.” Kori clarified.
“Azzy?” River asked with a raised eyebrow, watching him fight off the dark blue crawling onto his cheeks.
“I work at a thrift shop.”
“I’m a grad student,” Misae said, “mostly focusing on art and culture, and Rosair’s a mooch.”
“I think the technical term is gold digger,” Joliet commented.
“I thought it was drifter,” Kori chimed in.
“None of you are correct, I’m a freelancer.” Rosair said with a roll of his eyes.
“That’s what we said: a freeloader.” Azzy said and River had to quickly get closer to Joliet as Rosair nearly vaulted over the table to get at his friend. River laughed a little and looked over at Rosair for the first time since he sat down.
“What’s your specialty?” They asked leaning on the table and cutting off the others physically a bit, which got a gasp from Joliet.
“Graphic design,” he said.
“You any good?”
“I’ve been told so, but you’re welcome to find out,” he said with a smirk returning. River laughed a little.
“Okay, yeah, I walked into that one,” they said as the giggles subsided.
The conversation continued on like that for a while, giggles and quips and jokes at everyone’s expense. River learned that Kori, Misae, and Azzy had known each other since high school, Joliet wasn’t technically an inc but his dad had been, so his cambion status gave him a weird in when they were in college with the other three, and Rosair had needed people to help pay the rent on his, in Azzy’s words, “fucking massive” apartment which had led to their loose confederation of people. Joliet called them “the Inc Den” which only got a groan out of Kori. They were pleasant and funny, and River tried not to think about how they were the first friends they’d made outside of work in three years.
When Misae had left the table to get drinks, River felt their phone vibrate and they tried not to groan as they fished it out of their pocket.
“Careful sugar,” Rosair said. He’d tucked himself in close next to River even after the rejection and they kept their phone in the pocket next to him.
“Shut up Rose,” they muttered as they clicked it on.
From Lacey Loo: hey…. I’m sorry. Tell drake i’ll pay for his breakfast.
River tried not to slam their head on the table in response. They tried not to think about how normal it was that Lacey didn’t even have to say much for River to get the whole picture. They changed their text channels and started texting Drake.
To Drake-ula: please tell me your couch is open
From Drake-ula: sorry dude, ditto situation
To Drake-ula: a) get some, roger’ll expect a review b) fuck you fine c) please tell me it isn’t roger
From Drake-ula: you think too lowly of me, it isn’t roger. And fuck you too, see you tomorrow.
River went to change chats again when Joliet piped up, “What’s with the angry eyes Riv?” He asked.
“My roommate just sexiled me and my go-to couch did the same.” They said as they pulled up Roger’s contact.
To Roger Snake: please tell me I can crash on a pile of pillows
The lack of instantaneous reply led to River looking at the time. The fact that it was a little after midnight meant Roger wouldn't even be up, the early sleeper he was. “Fuck!” They hissed.
“Aren’t you a little old to get sexiled?” Kori asked.
“Do you want to be in the same apartment as a werewolf having sex when he’s noisy even unshifted?” River asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Fair enough,” Kori said almost immediately. River sighed and tried to think of literally anyone else who might be okay with them crashing. Derek usually didn’t want anyone in his apartment except for holiday dinners, Chasen was out of town, and Al lived with six other people and they usually had people on the couch. They felt bad for Nox, who could technically leave the apartment, didn’t like doing it so they usually just suffered in silence and berated Lacey in the mirror the following morning.
“You could stay with us sugar,” Rosair said. River looked over at him with a look of confused amusement.
“Bet you say that to all the pretty people,”
“Actually we have a “no marks in the apartment” policy,” Azzy said. “It ensures we all sleep and don’t end up in this very situation,” he added.
“Why should I?”
“Because going back to your place means a very vocal werewolf,” Rosair said.
“And we have a pull out couch.” Kori cut in quickly.
“And they think you're cute and the fact that you haven’t run for the hills after nearly two hours with us is a sign they might want to keep you around,” Joliet whispered in River’s ear. Joliet had quickly become a grounding element at the table. He seemed to translate the unspoken wants of everyone with ease of exetend exposure. River tried not to flush a little at the comment.
“Can I convince you all to swear on no funny business?” They asked cautiously.
“Absolutely, just a couch,” Kori said. River looked over at Rosair who chuckled but nodded.
“On my name, there’ll be no funny business, just a couch.” River glanced at Azzy and Misae who nodded in agreement.
“We’re with them.” Misae said. River did a quick pro-con list in their head and sighed.
“Alright, yeah, I’d love it if I could crash on your couch,” they said.
“Then we should probably get out of here,” Kori remarked. Misae stood up and allowed him and Azzy out of the booth. Rosair did the same for River and Joliet. River quickly realized that other than Azzy and Misae, River was the shortest amongst the group, and even Azzy had his horns for a little bit of extra height. As they started walking for the door, River caught Chrissa’s eye who only slightly furrowed her brow and came a dash closer
“Rio,” she said. The group stopped and River went over to the bar, leaning over on their elbows.
“What’s up?” They asked.
“You’re fully conscious and aware you’re leaving with these people right?” Chrissa asked. River chuckled slightly and nodded.
“Yeah, Drake’s got someone over and Lacey kicked me out, they’re letting me crash on their couch,” River said. They appreciated the check, really, it was out of character for River to leave Labyrinth with anyone other than Lacey, Drake, or even Roger if they managed to catch him early enough.
“Alright, text me in the morning, yeah?” She said, which River nodded without comment. They went back over to the others and they continued their way out of the bar, River saluting Frankie at the door as a symbol that they were leaving willingly. Frankie let out a low growl but nodded as they let Kori lead the group to the apartment.
It wasn’t a far walk from the Labyrinth, probably why they favored it like Lacey and River did, and it was actually surprisingly closer to work than River’s own apartment. Which meant it was in the opposite direction of their apartment making changing before work tomorrow a challenge. Maybe they could? No, no that’d be pushing it. They’d just ask Derek to have a spare set in the back room when they got in. When the group reached the complex, River realized why Rosair had needed help with the rent, it was not an inexpensive building, even if Rosair was as good as he said he was. They all piled into the elevator with Azzy practically leaning on Misae out of exhaustion. Kori was scrolling through his phone while Joliet was fishing out the keys. They reached the sixth floor and wandered down the hall a little before opening the door.
The main space was fairly open, a decent size kitchen off to the right, a television on a stand by far wall in between two doors. There was a small set of stairs that seemed to lead into a small hallway. If River had to guess, they were going to go with the idea that that’s probably where the den’s bedrooms were.
“Bathroom’s the left door, I’ll help with the couch when you come out,” Joliet said. Having been relieved from bed duty, Azzy and Misae wandered their way upstairs. River nodded once and wandered into the bathroom that was quite well furnished for a half bath. They quickly went and splashed some water on their face and came back to Kori and Joliet waiting for them. Joliet had tugged the bed out and it looked really comfy, even by pull out bed standards, as Kori had seemed to stack pillows and extra blankets on the end. Kori then handed over a pair of sweatpants.
“Figured you didn’t want to sleep in jeans,” he said and River couldn’t tell because the apartment was dark, but they could’ve sworn Kori was a little flustered.
“Thanks Kor,” River said with a small smile. Kori nodded and untied his hair as he wandered over to the stairs, shaking it out and running his hand through it. River tried not to be mesmerized by the gesture but based on Joliet’s chuckle they were unsuccessful.
“I’m pretty convinced that’s why he keeps it tied up,” Joliet remarked.
“Probably, he could cause traffic accidents like that.”
“Wait until he reminds you he can be a whore,” Joliet said.
“Huh?” River said with a small flush of pink.
“Kori doesn’t like to advertise he’s an incubus, rather just let people think he’s a slightly tall tiefling. Hell, if he could survive without having to feed, he’d do it. But every once and a while either Misae or Rosair will convince him to dress up and it tends to lead people to have a hard time keeping their hands to themselves.” Joliet said. “But, enough chatter, I’m the door to the right, if you need anything just knock. Most of us don’t get up before noon, but I’m your best bet if you need something in the morning.
“Like a different t-shirt?” River asked.
“Oh yeah, I’ll even loot a pair of underwear if you need it.”
“I don’t think--”
“Don’t worry, Rose won’t notice.” Joliet said with a smirk. River tried not to laugh too loudly at the prospect.
“Thanks Jols,” they said. Joliet grinned and held their arm out, allowing River to come into his side if they wanted to. They did, with ease tucking themselves into his side and receiving a quick squeeze.
“No worries darling, I’ll talk to you tomorrow, yeah?” He said with a smile. River nodded and quickly disappeared back into the bathroom to change into the sweatpants that anyone with eyeballs could tell weren't theirs, but they didn't really mind. They were comfy and that was all that mattered. They tiptoed back out and carefully curled up in the pile of blankets. This.... this was good.

PPG One-Shot: Back At You (Butch/Buttercup)
A T-rated Greens one shot I did for our resident gothic heroine @avesthetea over on AO3! 💚
A heartfelt shoutout to the Instagram clown cult. Y’all know who you are and how much you inspire me to chronicle Brick’s eternal suffering in new and creative ways. It’s what we do.
Summary: When Buttercup's birthday planning falls apart at the last minute, the last person she would ever expect offers his help (or horror, depending on your perspective).
xxx
Buttercup’s phone buzzed on the nightstand by her head, and she jerked awake. Swallowing the bitter sleep taste, she wiped her mouth and fumbled for the phone. Head still buried in the pillow, she answered: “What time is it?”
“Time to get your ass to the precinct,” said Ty, her partner at the Citiesville Police Department. “Chief Foolery’s all hands meeting starts in twenty minutes. Tell me you’re not still asleep.”
Buttercup sprang up on her elbows and checked the time on her phone. Shit, she was going to be late. “Shit, I’m going to be late!”
“Girl, that’s what I’m tellin’ you—”
“Gotta go, bye!” Buttercup hung up the phone and would have launched out of bed if not for the arm that slipped around her waist and pulled her back down.
“Five more minutes,” Butch grumbled.
Buttercup lost her balance and ended up with her bare back flush against his equally bare chest. His breath was hot on the back of her neck where he pushed his nose among her loose black hair. “Butch, I have to go,” she said in a warning tone.
He chuckled, and it sent a thrill of heat down her spine and under the covers, where he pushed a knee between her thighs. “Why go when you could come?” The arm he’d looped around her waist traveled low beneath the sheets.
Buttercup groaned at his crass joke and caught his wrist before he could carry out the threat. “Because if I’m not at CPD headquarters in twenty minutes, Foolery’s going to pop a hemorrhoid—”
Butch flipped them over with his Super speed, and her back hit the mattress beneath him. He loomed over her, those green eyes acid-bright in the early morning sunlight streaming through his bedroom window. Her traitorous gaze raked up his chest, over the shadow of stubble on his jaw, and settled on those fast darkening eyes as he admired her in turn. But the moment he bent down to kiss her, she slipped out from under him in a flash of green and darted across the room. In a matter of seconds, she’d pulled out a spare change of clothes from the lone dresser drawer he’d cleared out for her use.
“Leaving me hangin’? For real?” Butch complained as he flopped back down among the sheets with a yawn.
“You’ll live. But I won’t if I’m late for this fuckery.” She dressed quickly in dark jeans and a button-up blouse before heading to the connecting bathroom Butch shared with his daughter, Brisa.
“Missin’ out!” Butch called from the bedroom.
Yeah, Buttercup thought as she combed through the tangles in her hair with her fingers and ran the water to brush her teeth. A knock on the door interrupted her morning ablutions, and Brisa entered through her bedroom door.
“G’morning,” she said. Her brown hair was a frizzy mess, and she clutched a stuffed purple Pretty Puff Pony under one arm.
Despite her haste to get out of there and jet to work, Buttercup spared the little girl a soft smile. “Morning, kid. You’re up early.”
Brisa grinned wide. “I couldn’t sleep.”
Buttercup’s smile fell immediately. “Did Butch sneak you that second chocolate bar after dinner last night? Goddamnit—Butch!”
“What, change your mind?” he called. “I knew you couldn’t leave before climbing my morning wood.”
Brisa made a face like she was going to ask, and Buttercup slammed Butch’s bedroom door shut. “Never mind. Let me guess, you were too excited to sleep because today’s your birthday, right?”
Brisa blinked up at her and smiled, her questions forgotten. “Yeah! Oh my gosh, we’re gonna have so much fun!”
Buttercup chuckled and ruffled her messy hair. “For sure. But first, I have to go to work.”
“You’ll be back for my party, right?”
“One hundred percent.”
“Pinky promise?” Brisa held out her little finger.
Buttercup hooked her pinky around Brisa’s. “I promise. Now go get dressed and brush your teeth. I’ll check on your dad.”
“Okay!”
Buttercup breezed through the bedroom, chucked Butch his sweat pants with a cautionary “Hide your dick,” and flew out of her paramour’s two-bedroom apartment in downtown Townsville just as Brisa came bursting in excited to start the day.
xxx
The morning was a complete waste of time, and a bitter part of Buttercup lamented not skipping out in favor of staying in bed with Butch.
“Well, at least nobody died today,” Ty said as he and munched on his doner kebab lunch to go. “Yet.”
Buttercup sucked down half of a water bottle after scarfing down her own lunch. They had stopped at the food truck parked a couple blocks from the precinct, opting for a quick fix as they watched oblivious pedestrians lost to their Air Pods. “Welcome back to active duty, Mr. Brightside.”
Ty chuckled, low and deep. After a few months of healing and rigorous physical therapy, his legs were completely healed and he’d finally been cleared for work that didn’t involve pushing papers at his desk. Once more standing tall with the sun shining off his bald head, Buttercup could not have been happier to have her partner back to his old self by her side.
“You bring it outta me.” Ty winked.
“You ready to head out?” she asked, tossing her wrapper in a corner trashcan. Traffic was shit as usual midday on a Saturday, but they had time before Brisa’s party was slated to start.
“Sure. Lemme just text Melanie.”
Buttercup figured she better catch up with Butch while she waited for Ty and make sure he was on the ball.
[Buttercup: Did you pick up the cake?]
After a few seconds, he replied.
[Butch: Omw with B. You still on clown duty?]
Buttercup groaned at the reminder.
[Buttercup: Can I just say he died and couldn’t make it?]
[Butch: Sure, if you want to crush B’s hopes and dreams 💔😈]
“Kill me.”
“What’s wrong now?” Ty asked.
Buttercup pocketed her phone and led the way to the precinct parking lot where Ty’s car was parked. “Just grappling with some casual childhood trauma coming back to bite me in the ass.”
Ty side-eyed her. “Which one?”
“Ha ha.”
They made it to his red hatchback, and Buttercup slipped into the passenger seat.
“This about Brisa’s birthday party?” Ty asked.
Buttercup groaned again and tugged at her loose hair. “Of all the things, a clown? I thought they were universally considered nightmare fodder for kids these days.”
“Speakin’ of which, I think I remember a psychotic clown attacking Townsville back in the day.”
“You remember correctly.” Buttercup glowered out the window as Ty eased them into traffic toward the Golden Bay Bridge. “But it was the one thing she said she just had to have because some other dumb kid in her class got one for her party.”
“Ah. Six years old and already the social food chain’s tuggin’ on her.”
“Whatever. I never cared about that shit when I was a kid.”
Ty smiled to himself. “Uh-huh.”
Buttercup resigned herself to her unfortunate fate and dialed the company she’d previously contracted to rent a clown for the afternoon. After about five minutes on the phone, she hung up.
“What was that all about?” Ty asked. “Problem?”
Buttercup stared straight ahead as the Golden Bay Bridge’s suspender cables passed her by. “The clown died.”
Ty laughed.
“Ty.” Buttercup looked directly at him. “The guy got hit by a bus on his way to work today and he died.”
Ty shut up. “Oh, uh… Shit.”
A pause.
“I mean, is there another clown, or…?”
“I don’t fucking know,” Buttercup snapped. All she could think of was how Brisa was going to be so upset that the one goddamned thing she had asked for wasn’t going to happen because there was no time to book a new party clown on such short notice on a Saturday.
When Ty shifted in his seat, the leather squeaked loudly in the fuming silence he wisely chose not to break, until he did. “So, should I—”
“Just drive. I’ll think of something…” Buttercup said as she pulled out her phone and tried not to completely lose her shit as she dialed the one person who always seemed to know what to do in a crisis.
“Hey, Blossom,” Buttercup said gravely after her sister picked up. “I think I need some help.”
xxx
When Buttercup and Ty parked in front of her childhood home, guests had already begun arriving. Bubbles was outside greeting people and directing them to the backyard for the festivities. When she spotted Buttercup and Ty, she waved. “Hey, there you are!”
“Have you seen Blossom?” Buttercup asked.
Bubbles pushed up the sleeves of her chunky lavender sweater and looked around. “I think she and Princess were setting up the piñata. Is everything okay—”
Buttercup dashed to the backyard in a blaze of green, leaving Ty to make his way inside at a more sedate pace. The backyard was already teeming with people. Brisa was playing tag with her best friend Richie and a few other kids, while Boomer stacked presents on a table by the back door. Mike and Robin led the day drinking charge by pouring out sangria for the adults and juice for the kids. Buttercup nearly crashed through the green tissue streamers criss-crossing the enclosed backyard in her haste to locate her sister, who was in fact stringing up a red monster-shaped piñata with Princess Morbucks. Or rather, Blossom was doing all the work while Princess held two glasses of bloody sangria and provided live commentary.
“Whoever invented piñatas had the right idea is all I’m saying,” Princess said as she sipped her drink. She was annoyingly chic as usual in designer jeans, dark boots, and a purple silk blouse that probably cost more than the pittance Buttercup’s government paycheck brought in every month.
“You think so?” Blossom said, floating near a high branch so she could toss the suspension rope over it.
“Of course. You’re rewarded with candy for smashing the shit out of your mortal enemy. What could be better than that?”
Blossom grinned. “Mortal enemy in effigy.” She patted the red monster’s snout. “But you’re not wrong.”
“Obviously.” Princess handed her back her sangria, and they shared a knowing laugh.
“Blossom,” Buttercup said.
Blossom smoothed the front of her navy skirt as she turned toward Buttercup. “You’re here. Everything all right?”
Buttercup eyed Princess watching them. “I was going to ask you the same thing. Any progress on the clown front?”
“I’m sorry, the what?” Princess asked.
Blossom’s pink eyes softened, and she put a hand on Buttercup’s shoulder. “I took care of it, don’t worry.”
“Wait, really? How? I called five other rental companies, but everything’s booked solid.”
Blossom’s smile turned devious. “Trust me. Brisa’s going to be very pleased.” Buttercup wanted to argue, but her sister squeezed her shoulder in a silent entreaty. “Just enjoy the party. Boomer, Bubbles, and I have everything under control.”
“Speaking of control,” Princess had her phone out when Blossom turned back to her, “where is that prima donna? He’s not answering any of my texts.”
“Brick’s running a little late,” Blossom said as she led Princess away. “Wardrobe malfunction…”
Their voices faded to the background as Buttercup watched them. Two peas in a fucking pod, and she still didn’t really get what Blossom saw in Princess. If Princess hadn’t played such an integral part in things a couple months back, she would never have given the woman a second thought beyond “Hard pass.”
People, however, had a tendency to surprise when it was down to the wire.
“Heads up, Buttercup!”
Buttercup automatically caught the child hurtling through the air like a tossed water balloon before he could crack his head open.
“O-Oh! Hi, Buttercup,” said Richie, meek and curled in on himself like he’d forgotten he was no longer fragile.
Brisa came dashing over. “Nice catch!”
Buttercup peeled Richie off her and dropped him flat on his ass in the grass. “Brisa, don’t yeet your friends. Bubbles will have an aneurism if she catches you.”
Brisa blushed, abashed. “Sorry…”
Buttercup cracked a smile and winked, and Brisa lit up.
“I’m okay!” Richie, Super resilient, hopped onto his feet and shook out his fluffy blond hair. “Um, does this mean I’m ‘it’ now?”
“No, I wanna play with the clown!” Brisa announced.
Buttercup’s face fell. “Uh, about that…”
Brisa blinked up at her. “He’s coming to my party, right?”
The flicker of doubt that passed through Brisa’s big brown eyes cracked Buttercup’s cold stone heart. She struggled for the words to let her down gently, because whatever Blossom had managed to put together so last minute wasn’t going to be the colorful surprise Buttercup had gone out of her way to book and customize a month in advance.
A round of squeals from the other kids across the yard drew her attention, where they had gathered around Mike at the garden door. “Okay, settle down, kiddos! He’s a little shy. Now, where’s the birthday girl at? Hey, Brisa!”
“C’mon, Brisa, let’s go,” Richie said, tugging on her hand.
But she held her ground and didn’t budge. Buttercup wanted to die.
“Brisa, look,” she began.
The door behind Mike slid open, and out stepped what Buttercup could only describe as her personal revenge fantasy gone morbidly wrong. Brick had never looked so sour in his life.
“Oh! Uh, ta-da!” Mike said hastily as he stepped aside for the person formerly known as Brick until his murder by dishonor.
His steps squeaked in his oversized red shoes, and the striped red and yellow overalls he wore over a polkadot shirt ballooned out at his legs. He looked like a tropical bowling pin. He looked fucking absurd.
“It’s Flameo Hotman! Say hello, kids,” Mike said.
Brick shot Mike a scathing glare that may have incinerated him where he stood if the tiny party hat and enormous red clown nose didn’t ruin the effect. “The hell it is.”
Buttercup had no problem averting her eyes from the literal clownery to focus on Brisa, who was still staring and petrified. Oh shit, oh fuck, she was upset and it was Buttercup’s entire fault—
“Uncle Brick?” Brisa blurted out.
Brick’s lurid eyes passed over Buttercup and landed on Brisa. If Buttercup hadn’t been looking right at him, she would never have believed the way they softened just a little. He pursed his lips and lifted his elastic-tied party hat off his short red hair. It snapped back in place when he let go. “Happy birthday, Brisa.”
Brisa immediately dashed out of Richie’s grip in a sprint too fast to be human and body slammed Brick where he stood. With a grunt, he managed to catch her and keep his balance as she hugged him tight around his inflated waist and laughed. “You look so funny!”
Brick coughed. “Yeah, that’s sort of the point…”
The other kids took that as their cue to also mob Brick, and soon he was adrift in a sea of grubby hands and demands for balloon animals and magic tricks. Buttercup could not believe her eyes. She could hardly remember the last time she saw Brick dressed anything other than to the nines, and now…
“Fuck me,” she wheezed, too stunned even to laugh, it was that heinous.
“Pretty good, huh?” Bubbles sidled up to her with a wrapped present for Brisa under her arm.
Buttercup swallowed hard. She didn’t trust her voice as she watched Brick—Brick—snap at Brisa’s friends to line up in an orderly fashion if they wanted their faces painted, and no cutting the line or there would be consequences.
“The costume’s a little janky, but I didn’t have a lot of notice when Blossom told me we needed something colorful for him to wear,” Bubbles went on.
“Why?” Buttercup croaked. She turned to her baby sister, who seemed totally nonchalant existing in a universe where the selfish clown Blossom had chosen to keep for reasons Buttercup could not sympathize with deigned to dress as a literal fucking clown.
Bubbles slipped her hand in Buttercup’s and squeezed affectionately as they watched Brick paint the requested unicorn on Richie’s face as seriously as if it were a goddamned Monet. “I think this is his way of trying,” she said.
Buttercup would never forget that day two months ago when Butch asked her to come over after Brick had broken down and apologized to Boomer and him and all he wanted to do was break something, to feel it shatter in his hands, so why not her, who couldn’t break? That fight had been one of their most brutal, even compared to their rows in high school in the throes of raging hormones exacerbated by Chemical X.
They hadn’t spoken as they rinsed the dirt and sweat from each other after—Buttercup had been worried about setting him off again after he had settled into some sort of quiet serenity with his fingers in her hair, pulling the tangles out under the warm water like an artist honing his craft. Those hands were always working, always looking for something to crush.
“You ever love someone, but you don’t like them?” he’d asked her as she wrung the water from her hair and he stared at his hollow-eyed reflection in the mirror.
Buttercup was pulled from the memory when Blossom came out of the house to snap pictures on her phone of the kids with their painted faces, a bright smile on her face as Brick continued to ignore the entire world and focus on his task with surprisingly minimal complaint. Buttercup supposed that if anyone could dress like an ass-backwards buffoon and maintain some pretense of dignity, it was Brick.
“Yeah, I guess,” she said at length. She squeezed Bubbles’ hand back.
He’s trying something, all right.
xxx
“I want a dog, please!” asked a snot-nosed kid inexplicably dressed in a full dinosaur suit.
Butch watched Brick from the picnic table he’d plopped down on with a cold beer and three entire pizza boxes set aside entirely for Boomer and himself.
Brick frowned so deeply he looked like he was trying to pass a hardened turd. Wordless, he blew up a long red balloon, tied it off at the end, and handed it to the little boy. “Here.”
The kid accepted the unfolded balloon with quizzical look. “Huh? This isn't a dog.”
“Yeah, it is,” Brick said. “It’s a hot dog.”
“But that’s not what I asked—hey!” The kid squealed when Brick squirted him with water from the rubber flower on his overall strap.
“Next,” Brick said in a tone that promised medieval torture.
Cowed, the dinosaur kid slumped away with his shitty balloon, and the next little girl in line made her request.
“It had to be a bet,” Butch said grimly as he watched his brother pawn a “magic wand” on the little girl who asked for a monkey. She trudged off with the unfolded purple balloon and look in her eyes like she’d seen the hidden darkness of this world.
Boomer shrugged and swallowed a bite of pizza. He had his back to Brick, but he spared a glance over his shoulder. “I don’t know.”
“I mean, he’s gotta know the pictures will live on forever. This is unlimited blackmail.”
That got a little chuckle out of Boomer. Butch ruffled his bangs too roughly to be entirely affectionate, and Boomer swatted him away. “Dude, my hair.”
“Want me to get you a balloon dick?”
Boomer’s gaze flickered to him, and for a moment Butch was transported back twenty years to Mojo’s Observatory. He and Boomer were sometimes left by themselves while Mojo and Brick tinkered in the old man’s lab well into the night with nothing to do and no one to talk to but each other. On nights like that, Butch didn’t really mind it when Boomer crawled into his bunk and fell asleep there. The room always felt a little colder and darker without Brick there.
“I’m fine,” Boomer said.
Butch searched his eyes, blue and expressive and always shining like he might cry or laugh. He had always envied Boomer that ability to project, to offer a connection, even if it was only pain. He’d always been good at that.
“Really,” Boomer added, hardening his gaze like a fucking mind reader. “I’ll be fine.”
“Yeah.” Butch wondered how long it would take for that to be true. “You know, it’s been a couple months—”
“Butch,” Boomer said, cold like he never was.
Butch hopped off the table and put a hand on Boomer’s shoulder. “It’s been a couple months, but it’s not a race. There’s no finish line to cross.”
Boomer chuckled, but it sounded kind of like a wheeze. His hand was cool on Butch’s where he squeezed him. “Thanks, Butch.”
Butch patted his back. As he was leaving, heard Boomer call, “Make mine blue.”
Butch chuckled. “Sure.”
Fucking sap.
At least Butch wasn’t the only one.
He made his way to the terrace, where Brick was set up with balloons and the face painting station. When Brick noticed his brother waiting in line, the balloon he was inflating went up in flames and disintegrated to ashes, leaving him looking as flushed as his stupid clown nose.
“I’m out of balloons, kids. Go dig a hole or something,” he said to the remaining two children.
“Huh? But there’s a whole bag— one little boy with enormous glasses started to say.
Brick fired his laser eye beams at the bag of balloons and blew it up. “What bag?”
The kids stalked off in a sulk, and Butch sauntered up to the chair Bubbles had brought out from the kitchen table.
“Bitch move,” he said, plopping down. “I promised Boomer I’d bring him a blue cock, made special with love.”
“Uh-huh,” Brick said. He watched Butch with those shifty red eyes like he might lash out and attack him.
Amused and a little nervous, Butch sank into the chair with much bravado and man-spreading. “Paint me like one of your French girls.”
Brick narrowed his eyes, but he picked up the paints and sat down in the opposite chair without a word, until: “What do you want?”
“I dunno, something cool. A rocket ship.”
Silence. Brick leaned in close to apply the paint with a thin brush, meticulous and anal like he was with everything he did. Butch didn’t have to see his face to know he was concentrating way too hard.
“I can feel the vibrations of you clenching your asshole from here,” Butch said. “Relax.”
“I’m relaxed.”
“Fuck off.”
Brick put down the brush. “If you keep talking, this is going to turn out shitty.”
Butch shut up. Brick resumed painting.
After a moment, Butch closed his eyes. There was something soothing about the soft scrape of the brush against his cheek. Behind his eyelids, he saw a much younger version of Brick covered in paint and grinning fiercely, king of the world, until Butch hit him with his paintball gun right in the kisser. Green paint exploded everywhere, and Boomer fell on his ass laughing. Brick angrily wiped the paint from his eyes in a goopy mess and lobbed it back at Butch, who was too far gone to care. Rolling on the grass and covered in paint, he couldn’t remember a happier afternoon spent with his brothers and Mojo. At least, not until Brisa came along.
Butch sucked in a breath as he opened his eyes and dispelled that trance-like memory. Brick didn’t even snap at him when he turned his head to look right at him. His face was pinched: his mouth too thin and his eyes too wide as he waited for another pot shot to the face.
“You look stupid,” Butch said.
“I know,” Brick said.
“Really fucking stupid.”
Brick’s eye twitched. “I know.”
“Thanks.”
Brick swallowed. “It’s her birthday.”
“Yeah, but I’m your brother. So thanks.”
It was not often that Brick was flabbergasted, but the dude looked like someone had just grabbed him by his oversized red nose. Butch burst into a sly smirk and did just that. To his sadistic satisfaction, it squeaked when he squeezed it.
“Honk honk, motherfucker,” Butch said.
It took Brick all of two seconds to ditch his bewilderment and swat Butch’s hand away. “Shit head.”
“Clown.”
To Butch’s immense surprise, Brick let him have the last word. Well, damn. He chuckled and leaned back in the chair so Brick could finish painting his cheek. Two months and he barely saw the guy on purpose, and now this.
“I’m burning every picture Blossom took today,” Brick said at length.
Butch chuckled. “You forgot about the cloud.”
“I’m burning that too.”
“Now you’re just being a whiny bitch.”
“Wipe Bubbles’ phone and I’ll pay you.”
“Eh, maybe just grab a beer sometime.” It came out so naturally that he didn’t even think about it. Brick, too, was taken aback. The more he saw it today, the less Butch liked that surprised look in his older brother’s eyes. It was fucking weird. “Seriously. It’s been a minute.”
Brick didn’t move. He didn’t even breathe. “Yeah, cool.”
“Cool.”
Cool.
“Hold on, almost done,” Brick said, and grabbed Butch’s chin to turn his face.
Butch’s eyes found Brisa running around with a large, green balloon crown on her head and her cheeks painted with rainbows, and his gaze softened. It was almost time for cake.
“Done,” Brick announced.
Before Butch could reply to that, there was a small commotion at the backyard gate with Bubbles, who followed a very short, very hairy monkey inside.
“Grandpa Mojo?” Brisa stopped playing with her friends to greet the old monkey. He had a box with a green bow on top so perfectly wrapped a department store may have done it. His arms were rigid as they held it out and Bubbles hovered just behind him, watchful.
“Good afternoon, Brisa. I have procured you a gift to celebrate, rejoice, and otherwise partake in various forms of merriment on this day of your birth, which is to say, your birthday, thus, the day you were born.”
Nearby, Blossom paused picking up trash with Robin to eye Mojo askance, nonchalant in that low key frightening I-will-blow-your-dick-off way she had. Buttercup was chatting away with Mitch Mitchelson and Clara Clearly, but she too had eyes only for Mojo.
Brisa blushed cutely, suddenly shy. “Thank you.” She accepted the gift and looked between Mojo and Bubbles. “Um, will you stay for cake?”
Mojo’s green skin turned a ghastly shade of pink. It took a Butch a moment to realize he was blushing. He was sure he had never seen Mojo blush before.
Mojo cleared his throat. “I do not eat cake,” he said with finality.
“Oh…” Brisa clutched her new gift to her chest.
“But, I suppose… I could sample a beverage while I am here. A guest ought not turn away hospitality when it is offered.”
Brisa just smiled brightly and reached for Mojo’s crusty old paw. “I have juice. Oh! And you have to stay for the piñata. Have you met Richie? He’s my best friend in the whole world!”
“I do not think—” Mojo lost his words as he was pulled along by his Super granddaughter whether he liked it or not.
“Hey.”
Brick’s hand on Butch’s shoulder exerting Super pressure made him looked down at his hands, which sparked with green power. He clenched his fists and fizzled it out.
“You good?” Brick asked, low and grave.
Butch sniffled. “Yeah, I’m good. Habit.” He paused, then: “I invited him. Boomer said it was fine.”
Brick nodded. “Okay.”
Butch’s stupid heart clenched. “I meant to text you—”
“Blossom told me. It’s fine, drop it.”
He should have dropped it. Two months ago he would have, happily. What the fuck did it matter now when it never had growing up? But that was two months ago. “Don’t fucking do that.”
Brick frosted over and got up. “Do what.”
“Hey.” Butch grabbed him by his ridiculous overalls. “You and me. No girls. Battle and beers, like the old days.”
Brick was a cold hard bastard, but even he had his cracks, and right now he broke like an egg, slack-jawed and lame.
“Tomorrow,” Butch said.
Brick nodded numbly. “Tomorrow.”
Butch smirked and got up to leave, but Brick’s voice stopped him one last time.
“Thanks, Butch.”
“Sure.”
“Tell Boomer it’s a consolation.”
“Huh?”
But he got nothing more out of Brick once Blossom and Princess showed up.
“Oh. My. God. Wait, let’s take a selfie.” Princess managed to get her arm around Brick’s neck, but he snatched her phone before she could take a picture.
“No fucking way, Princess,” he said.
Blossom grabbed his chin and kissed him right there, shameless. It was enough to distract him so Princess could reclaim her phone. “You know, I kind of like you as a clown.”
“I don’t.” Princess managed to snap a picture of Brick and Blossom. “But you’re pulling off the striped overalls, I have to say.”
“Burn that.” Brick advanced, but Blossom pulled him back with a laugh.
“Why so serious, Brick?” she teased.
Princess stuck her tongue out at him.
Butch left them to their childish shit; it was time for cake, and he had a brand new six-year-old to impress.

Buttercup was having a surprisingly good time. Between pizza with Butch and Boomer, hanging out with her sisters, and the everlasting memories that were clown Brick saved to her iCloud where he would never find them, today was turning out surprisingly well. Butch caught her eye across the yard and gestured inside, so she excused herself from the conversation with Ty and his sister to followed him.
He was in the kitchen when she found him.
“Hey, doll. Cornering me for dirty kitchen sex?” he teased.
Buttercup laughed at the sight of him, two percent bravado and ninety-eight percent imbecile. “Let me grab you a glass of water for that thirst.”
The cake he’d bought sat in a box in the fridge with Brisa’s name scribbled on the lid. Buttercup brought it out and set it on the counter. Then, she hunted for the colorful party platter Bubbles kept for special occasions.
Butch’s arms slipped around her waist from behind, and he pressed his nose to her loose hair. “Mm, you smell like pepperoni.”
“Eat my dick,” Buttercup said.
“I like it.”
“I bet you do, you horny carnivore.”
“Nooo, not the dirty talk,” he whined, pressing a kiss to her neck and pulling her back against him.
Buttercup fought against her growing smile as she opened the cake box and transferred the treat to the platter. “You need rehab.”
“If that’s your kink.”
Buttercup snorted. “Shut up and help me with this.”
They loaded up the chocolate cake on the platter, and Buttercup found the candles in a drawer.
“Got some shit on your nose,” Butch said.
“What?” He dabbed his chocolate frosted finger on the tip of her nose the moment she turned toward him, and she swatted his hand away. “Oh, come on. What are you, five?” She wiped the frosting from her nose and licked her finger clean.
No sooner had she finished than he grabbed her chin and kissed her deeply. In the quiet of the kitchen with no one around to see them, Buttercup gave into feeling and curled her fingers in his flannel shirt. When he smiled against her like the swooning buffoon he’d always been at heart, she laughed and pulled him closer.
His hands found their way over the curve of her ass, as they always did, and pulled her against him with a squeeze. “Fuck, I want you.”
“You always want me.”
“Have you seen your ass? You’d want you too.” He gave her another squeeze, and she had to bite her lip to stifle a moan.
Buttercup slipped her fingers through his hair, full and soft on top and shorn short behind the ears. For a moment, they simply stared at each other as Buttercup marveled at how much she wanted this, wanted him. She had never wanted anyone as much as she wanted him, so badly she could feel it threatening to tear her in two.
“You have all this power,” he murmured, soft like it was a precious secret he clung to.
Buttercup could have laughed at how much he underestimated his own power of her. “Back at you.”
“No.” He touched his forehead to hers and breathed like they finally had time. “Not like you. Not like this.” His hand moved to her waist as if to lead her in a dance. “You have me, Buttercup.”
Buttercup’s eyes burned with a foreign heat, unwelcome. Butch used to scare her when he spoke to her like this; now, she could only bite her lip and wait for the threat of tears to pass. “Back at you,” she said again, shaky and so fucking grateful.
They stayed that way a moment, in the kitchen of her childhood home with the warm smell of chocolate and the low din of the party outside, and for the first time that day, Buttercup felt the tension ease from her shoulders.
“By the way,” Butch said, his eyes still closed and his forehead still pressed against her, “I’m fucking the shit out of you when we get back to my place.”
Buttercup smirked. “Great example you’re setting for your daughter.”
“I got her new headphones with noise canceling.”
“She’s going to notice if we break the tub again.”
“There’s a hose. She can bathe with that.”
“Just pressure wash her like a truck.”
“Fast, efficient, and it’ll save on the water bill.”
“You don’t even pay for water, the landlord does.”
“Hey, I’m a good Samaritan lookin’ out for my neighbors.”
“Screw the neighbors.” Buttercup ran her fingers over his lips, down his chin to his chest, where his heart thundered under her touch. “I want you to fuck the shit out of me.”
Butch laughed hoarsely. “Maybe I should ask Boomer to take Brisa tonight.”
They parted, and Buttercup was about to tell him to grab the cake while she hunted for a knife when she finally noticed his cheek. “Did Brick do that?”
“The rocket ship? Yeah, good excuse to talk to him.”
“A rocket ship, huh?” Buttercup smiled so brightly her cheeks began to hurt. “That was nice of him.”
Butch gave her a weird look. “Whatever, we’re hanging out tomorrow. After today, I figure he can use it.”
Buttercup’s throat wrenched as she tried her best not to burst out laughing. “Don’t quote me, but he sort of saved my ass today. The other clown died.”
“Shut up.”
“I’m serious, he literally died.”
Wow, party almost ruined.”
“I mean, also a man is dead.”
“Oh, shit, yeah you’re right. Sorry. I guess don’t tell Brisa.”
Buttercup rolled her eyes. “Jesus Christ. Grab that cake and don’t drop it.”
xxx
Brisa grinned to the point of bursting as everyone sang Happy Birthday to her and she blew out her candles. Cake went by in a breeze as the kids screamed about presents next. Like some hot, pink angel, Blossom took charge of the activities with Robin’s and Buttercup’s assistance and made sure the kids were thoroughly entertained so that Butch could eat his cake and watch his little girl enjoy her special day.
Now, seated on the picnic table again with Boomer and Bubbles, he dug into the slice Bubbles said she couldn’t finish.
“Hey, Butch,” Boomer said, chill.
“Yeah?” Butch asked.
“Why’s there a huge dick on your face?”
“Huh?”
On Butch’s other side, Bubbles poked his painted cheek. “It’s a very proportionate dick. Good dimensions.”
Boomer wheezed into his beer. Butch choked on his cake. At the next table over, Brick, that soggy ballsack, stood chatting with Princess Morbucks and Mike Believe still in his full clown regalia sipping sangria through a bendy straw. The moment he felt Butch’s eyes on him, he grinned maliciously around his straw.
“Motherfucker—” Butch tried to get up, but Bubbles grabbed his wrist.
“Language, Butch. There are children around,” she sang, cheerful as a fucking bell.
Butch pointed at Brick. “You—you clown!”
“Hey, that’s Flameo Hotman to you,” said Mike, with all the confidence of someone who didn’t know he was about to be drop-kicked in the face.
Princess squinted at Butch. “Is that a cock on your face?”
“It sure is,” Boomer said, mid-heart attack.
“Daddy, come hit the piñata with me!” Brisa came bounding over with a stick and a blindfold.
“Great timing, Brisa!” Bubbles shoved Butch way too hard toward his overeager daughter, and he had no choice but to accept the stick and blindfold.
“Uh, right,” he stammered, trying to reign it in. It was her birthday; Brick and his dick pic clownery could wait.
A hand on Butch’s shoulder squeezed too hard to be entirely friendly, and he turned to get a face full of said clown.
“Honk honk, motherfucker,” Brick said under his breath.
Butch raised his hand to decapitate his brother right there, but Brisa yanked him with her Super strength, and he had no choice but to let it lie.
The sight of Buttercup nearby watching him take his place at the piñata should have mollified him, but she had let him walk out of that kitchen dick pic’d, a betrayal of the highest order…and a quality prank, if he was honest.
He’d let his guard down around her.
It was his own mistake, underestimating her.
The heat of a challenge in her eyes as she watched him lift the blindfold to his eyes set fire to his blood. After all was said and done today and Butch left Brisa with Brick because fuck his fancy Saturday plans, Butch would take Buttercup’s advice and screw the neighbors. Tonight they were putting on a show.
With a self-satisfied grin, Butch lowered the blindfold, readied the stick, and imagined the red piñata was Brick in his ridiculous clown nose.

Chapter 28: Starlight’s Mother, Part 4 - The Tragedy of Starlight’s Past
The group that went to New Haven to bring back Sunburst’s father return to the room where everyone else is waiting for them.
Twilight: Welcome back, all of you! So you’re Sunburst’s father? It’s nice to finally meet you.
Sunspot: I could say the same Princess Twilight… especially after you and your son Spike’s Dragon Tear has allowed me to find some closure about Sunset. We still have yet to hear everything about what happened… but I’d still like to thank you and Spike so much for letting me see my sister again, from beyond the grave no less.
Twilight: You’re welcome! Once me and Spike discovered this and got some important information on how it all works, we needed to immediately get to the ponies we knew that would need to see any spirits whether they miss them so much like Applejack and her parents. Or as it turned out… figuring out the mysteries about Starlight’s Mother, your sister, and what happened to Sunset. Who knew they’d all connect?
Sunset: Speaking of what happened to me, while there... I had another memory jog… I still don’t know everything yet… but Sunspot brought back something that helped me remember something.
Twilight: Oh? What is this?
Sunspot brings out the jar with Sunset’s disembodied yellow horn he found while on a search at Nightmare Cliffs.
Just about the entire room gasps. Any Unicorns and both Alicorns in particular shivering at the sight. Rarity in particular just about shrieks in horror.
Rarity: I-is t-that…?!
Sunset: My disembodied horn? Yes, it is.
Rarity falls over fainting, Fluttershy catches her as she falls backward
Twilight: You lost your horn?! Was this during the confrontation with the Anarchists?
Sunset nods
Sunset: When I saw the horn, I instantly got a mental image of facing two pony shaped figures in front of me and another flying above me. Followed by a large rock that was dropped at the base of my horn, breaking it off and giving me a short concussion.
Twilight: That’s awful… I suppose that also explains how you had trouble despite the anarchists otherwise being regular ponies…
Sunset: It definitely looks like whatever happened, they took advantage of the fact I couldn’t effectively use my magic after my horn broke, and I died somehow… That’s all the new information I have, though of course a reminder that 2 of the 3 lost their lives too… so whatever happened next certainly couldn’t have been as simple as they grouped together to throw me off the cliff or something.
Starlight: Brrr… losing the horn… that’s a fear just about every unicorn has… I can’t imagine what that must of felt like…
Sunset: It was quite painful… and I definitely think I remember feeling a bit of helplessness after I recovered from the concussion.
Starlight: At least physical injuries don’t seem to have shown up permanently on your spirit. I can see your horn’s still on you right now
Twilight: Spirits show up as the last known appearance of those who summoned them. Which means Firelight’s memory likely allowed Sunset to appear as she was on the last day Firelight saw her before she left towards that fateful chase. It might be possible had Starlight summoned Sunset by herself, maybe the physical appearance of when you died would of showed up, since it defaults to just about the spirit’s age and/or last appearance when alive if the one who summoned them is somepony blood related that did not know them. Though Spirits are also capable of becoming any age/appearance they were when alive. I saw Jinn turn herself into an old mare, and a filly earlier. I wonder if the same goes for physical injuries?
Sunset closes her eyes and focuses, she only needs to go a little bit forward. Most of her horn fades away revealing a hole of a horn very much akin to Tempest Shadow’s own broken horn, a disheveled and wet mane and tail as if she was in the middle of a heavy storm, and her right eye injured with a black eye revealed as she opened her eyes
Rarity has finally recovered from her faint, but as she looks up she now sees Sunset with her injured appearance. And she faints again.
The rest of the group just look taken aback as they view Sunset’s likely appearance before she died.
Twilight: Ouch… I hope going into injured appearances doesn’t result in you feeling that pain again…
Sunset: Thankfully no, it’s only appearance-wise on us spirits. We don’t exactly… have nerves anymore. Like say if somepony who was able to touch me, hit me for some reason. It wouldn’t exactly hurt. I could still get angry and ask why they’re trying to hit me, but I don’t think Starlight, Sunburst, Princess Celestia, Fi-Fi, and my brother would ever want to.
All those who she named nod in agreement that they have no reason to want to hit Sunset. Sunset focuses again to erase the injuries and looks like how she was before again.
Meanwhile, Sunset’s brother Sunspot approaches Princess Celestia and bows before her.
Sunspot: Princess Celestia, it’s an honor to be in your presence.
Celestia actually looks sort of solemn at the bow of Sunset’s brother.
Celestia: Are you sure I deserve this bow… Sunset led a dangerous life because she was my protege… It’s indirectly my fault your beloved little sister’s life ended this way...
Celestia closing her eyes, with tears dropping. Sunset looks at her old mentor, and immediately goes to reassuring the Princess.
Sunset: Princess, you know as well as I do that I when you said you wanted to make me your personal protege, I was enthusiastic. I very much enjoyed my time as your student, if anything, I should of listened to you when you told me to take a break from watching the movement of every threat out there that I personally chose would be my prerogative. But I was so dedicated to protecting Equestria that I lost sight of having much of a personal life. And because I chose to pursue criminals at every opportunity, that only made it more difficult to establish one.
If there’s anypony to blame for what happened other then the 3 anarchists I chased that fateful day, it would be myself, for getting careless…
Celestia: I appreciate hearing that from you, Sunset… just even I kick myself for what I perceive as failures… even as I now have my sister back, it doesn’t make it any less upsetting that I didn’t stop her turn into Nightmare Moon in the first place…
Sunset just gives Princess Celestia a reassuring smile.
Sunset: Good thing you found a new student that succeeded on bringing her back to you, and now Twilight will achieve everything you hoped I would one day. And from the sounds of things, the world has gotten more and more peaceful. Actually…
Sunset turns towards Twilight.
Sunset: Is if ok if I ask for a run through on all the threats you faced in your time as Celestia’s student? I know you didn’t really start saving the world until past Adulthood, meanwhile my world-saving days started in my pre-teens. But maybe I can provide some commentary if any of them were in my list of potential threats.
Twilight: Well.. I guess I’ll start with Nightmare Moon. Where, through trials of my friends showing their elements. we discovered the Elements of Harmony and were able to banish the evil out from within Luna.
Applejack tips her hat up and winks, Pinkie Pie bounces, Rarity gracefully poses, Fluttershy smiles, and Rainbow Dash gives a smug grin as Twilight reminds them of their first triumph together.
Sunset: Mmhmm! Very nice! It was still a good two decades before Luna’s Banishment was over so I would of been in my 40’s if I had been the one to face off with Nightmare Moon. Though if I had continued on, I likely would of already ascended prior to then so I could really help bring Luna back.
Celestia: I don’t know if Sunset would of had 5 individual friends, like you did Twilight. Another option we possibly had was I use half of the elements, while Sunset used the other 3 for us together to free Luna. I probably would of used the elements of laughter, kindness, and generosity. And Sunset would be given magic, loyalty, and honesty.
Twilight: Those elements do seem to fit you, I know from experience Princess Celestia would of wielded the 3 elements she mentioned, and now that I’ve met Sunset… She was very good at magic, she was really loyal to Princess Celestia, and while this is a bit posthumously… she’s shared much of the truth of quite a few things. So that might’ve worked.
Sunset: What’d you face off with next?
Twilight: Next was… Discord. He was surely a hoof full…
Sunset: Ohhhhh yea, Discord was still trapped in his statue throughout my time. But I was aware of what crazy things he was capable of. But apparently he’s on the good side now?
Twilight: When he wants to be I guess... he’s friends with Fluttershy so he doesn’t do much to actively antagonize any of us. But he does do some things we often have to go and fix… Frankly, one good thing about being a genie… is that I’m able to fix something crazy he does faster then it otherwise normally would of been.
Sunset: It is true that becoming a genie got you powers just about on par with Discord. He does call himself the Spirit of Chaos. Given you’re at least in part Spirit, you could say you’re the Spirit of Order. *giggles*
Twilight: Wait… is Discord’s magic soul magic too?
Sunset: I’m not even sure, I think Discord has magic that fits in its own category, but it is quite powerful. It might be safer to say it’s sort of a mix between soul magic and dark magic? It’s neither powered up with good over a lifetime like soul magic is, though it’s not inherently malicious or damaging like dark magic is.
Twilight: Hmm… true. His magic often has insane or annoying results, but it’s often all for laughs and/or doesn’t purposefully harm anypony. Might be for once, something interesting to talk about to him later.
Anyhow… after we defeated Discord. Queen Chrysalis and her army of changelings invaded my brother’s and Princess Cadence’s wedding
Sunset: Ah yes… Queen Chrysalis… I did some recon of the hive back in the day. But due to that protection they have of not allowing non-changeling magic from working around or in the hive… I couldn’t really approach to attack myself, as it was too dangerous to go in alone. But they also didn’t have much power, since there was no big event for them to gather enough love to attack like the wedding your brother had. I had them listed as a low-tier present time threat that could potentially become a big threat, if a publicized event full of love to feed on happened as they invaded.
Twilight: Which happened to be my brother’s wedding… huh…?
Sunset: I guess so! And it was also another reason I had a secretive wedding with Fi-Fi, a personal protege of the princess having a public wedding may have been exactly what Chrysalis was waiting for.
Twilight: The changeling invasion was the last big event before I became a genie. Going to Saddle Arabia was in fact somewhat of a reward Celestia allowed me and Spike after defeating Chrysalis. There was no threats then, but I wonder if maybe Malakhar would of tried to genify you at some point Sunset if he had seen you?
Sunset: Possibly! Though I believe Malakhar may have only been a little colt back when I was still Celestia’s protege.
Twilight: I guess his Grandfather could of possibly done it then, if they had found out about you early enough.
Sunset: I have been to Saddle Arabia before, but I mostly accompanied Celestia during routine negotiations with the Sultan. So I was never there too long, and never really on the Streets where Malakhar’s grandfather could of approached me.
Twilight: Alright… so next… the Crystal Empire came back and so did King Sombra.
Sunset: Oof, Sombra is certainly a doozy. He’s pretty much dark magic incarnate. I think sometime ago, he discovered a way to sort of control himself in Dark Magic form if he ever was killed though at the price that if he’s defeated, he sort of gets a fate worse then death in being trapped in a void that only could escape through substantial magic, such as the Crystal Empire coming back. I think technically the first time Celestia and Luna faced him was when he “died” for the first time.
Twilight: Oh, is Sombra being controllable dark magic why he has that sort of smoky form?
Sunset: *shrugs* I only heard of Sombra through whatever the royal archives had on him, so I’ll take your word you saw that. But maybe?
Twilight: The fact he only goes to a void may have explained why he came back two more times…
Sunset: WHAT?! You had to face Sombra THREE times?! How in Equestria did that happen?
Twilight: I did say Discord did things that we had to fix
Sunset: ….Are you sure Discord is on the good side? I would of put him back in stone for bringing back Sombra TWICE!
Twilight: Believe me when I say I sometimes feel the same way… but again, he does have a legit friendship with Fluttershy. Plus, he’s actually helped me out at least once when I was had this strange Genie Sickness. He also helped with something that i haven’t quite gotten to yet. But I still have a few more events and/or villains to talk about before then.
Though Sombra was the last threat before I ascended to Princesshood. Though… given you were Celestia’s student before me. I hope you don’t feel like me mentioning that is sort of flaunting a status you didn’t achieve…
Sunset shakes her head horizontally
Sunset: No, staying to eventually ascend to Princesshood became the opposite of what I wanted. I wanted a family. Celestia & Luna have never been married, and the reason for that is while outliving friends, family, as well as royal staffers & guards is hard enough. It’s a whole ‘nother thing with special someponies, and your own children. Cadence has your brother, though arguably she may be the one exception being the Princess of Love. Outliving your brother is just going to have be something she faces one day.
Twilight: Yeah… though at least Spirit summoning will sort of help with that. But I picture it’ll still be rather hard for both her & me when Shining passes
Sunset: Just always remember that everypony going up there just continues to protect the planet long after they’re gone and that may make you feel better. Plus, unless you have a lot of huge dragon friends that pass you want to see, it should be safe to summon a few friends down every now and then.
Twilight nods
((Story continues after the break))
Twilight: Continuing on… my first huge test against a villain as Princess was Tirek.
Sunset: Oh yeah… Tirek would of certainly been a toughie had he gotten out with enough strength to cause havoc when I was around
Twilight: He certainly was tough, even with the combined added strength of Celestia, Luna, and Cadence coursing through my veins. Tirek had Discord’s magic powering him up... So we had a stalemate. And it took an additional power-up offered by the Tree of Harmony to send him back to Tartaurus as we just happened to have collected these sort of strange keys over the course of that year that allowed us to open a box given to us.
Sunset: Sometimes you gotta be lucky, when saving the world!
Twilight: After Tirek… was when we returned to Saddle Arabia, though this time also bringing my friends along. That was when we came face-to-face with Zathir, who controlled me with a device of his own, and if not for Spike creating his Dragon’s Tear that we’re using to see and talk with you now… the world would likely be under a Saddle Arabian empire controlled by Zathir.
Sunset: I did always have a feeling that Zathir was somepony that had some sort of plot in his mind. Though now I know what it was, his method of trying to take over the world seemed unlikely given no genies were around. And up until what he did to you, the Sultan naively trusted him.
Twilight: Perhaps the scariest part was ironically after I was freed from his control… where he stabbed Spike straight in his right eye…
Sunset: OUCH… I guess that explains Spike’s scar…
Spike: It’s thanks to Fluttershy, I didn’t end up with only one eye. Remnants of being a vampire bat pony had healing properties in her fang.
Sunset looks over to Fluttershy a bit dumbfounded
Sunset: You were a vampire?!
Fluttershy sheepishly smiles
Fluttershy: Sorta… only in regards to fruit… not blood, ehehhehheh...
Applejack: We kinda always get some pretty strange things happen t’ us, even when we’re not saving the world
Sunset: I see… well, I certainly have to be thankful for what happened after you girls defeated Zathir... not just for the usual saving the world once again... But due to that event spawning the very Dragon’s Tear allowing me to speak down here so I can see my husband again and talk to my lovely daughter for the first time.
So… what came next?
Twilight gulps, given Sunset just mentioned talking to her lovely daughter… given her daughter was the next villain. Twilight looks over to Starlight, who gives her a sad face but still whispers as she says…
Starlight: Go ahead, Twilight. It’s best she knows much of the truth of what my life’s been like…
Twilight nods, even if she is still a little afraid of Sunset losing all good will she had for her daughter up until now.
Twilight: Well um… how can I put this… your daughter… Starlight… led a whole town under an Equalist Cult that took cutie marks away… and aimed to expand...
Sunset looks over to her daughter with a stern look, causing Starlight to lower her head. But instead of actually getting mad at Starlight, Sunset just breathes deep and sighs.
Sunset: *sigh* I knew I shouldn’t have left that manifesto in the house… even if I at least tried to hide it…
Twilight: Huh? Manifesto?
Starlight: She’s… probably referring to the other book I found when I broke the wall… it happened to be the manifesto that got me hooked on the beliefs I held over “Our Town”…
Sunset: Among many of the criminals I defeated were also those looking to start dangerous cults. I burned most copies, but usually kept one as a sort of historical account of what to look out for. It’s a shame that this one lone copy ended up in the hooves of my daughter, and she got influenced by it… so I kind of blame myself more for that one…
Sunset turns around to Firelight with a rather stern eyebrow raise at her husband
Sunset: Though I should also ask how you let her read it…
Firelight: Um… you never told me what the book looked like… I thought it was just a math book from the Equal Sign on the cover… She always looked like she was quite deeply engrossed in the book… I didn’t want to take it away from her because she always had this infectious smile on her face reading it so intently…
Sunset: You never saw what was in the book other then the Cover?! What kind of filly her age was going to be so engrossed in Math like that?!
Firelight: I’m so sorry, Shimmy! I really thought she was just yearning to be a fantastic mathematician or something!
Sunset facehoofs
Sunset: Well... at least Twilight and the others broke you out of that ideology… and you seem to be on good terms now.
Given the reaction though, it makes Twilight even less sure about telling Sunset about what came next. She leans on over to whisper to Starlight.
Twilight: Starlight… I can skip over what happened with the time travel… I feel like she may blow a gasket if she hears about that…
Starlight looks to the side and allows Twilight to not mention it, though she has this strange sense it’d probably be important for her mother to hear it anyhow.
Twilight: Anyhow… next Queen Chrysalis came back. And managed to bottle nap me and capture many of us. A team of your daughter, Trixie, Discord, and a rogue changeling named Thorax had to come in and save Equestria
Hearing this cheers up Sunset, she grins and looks at her daughter
Sunset: No way! My daughter has saved Equestria once? Once again, the apple hasn’t fell far from the tree. I’m proud of you, Starlight!
Starlight at first blushes from her praise, but then she looks to the side sadly. And she lowers her head and closes her eyes.
Starlight: No… I don’t deserve this praise yet… maybe not even ever... and I refuse to hold any more secrets out from my family…
Sunset: Huh? What do you mean?
Starlight: There’s some context missing before I helped defeat Chrysalis the 2nd time around… it didn’t go as simply that Twilight and the others freed me from the Equalist ideology and then I was on their side from then on… I ran away and plotted a revenge plan…
The whole room gasps as it looks like Starlight’s about to fully come clean to what she’s done to her mother who was known for making sure Equestria was safe at all costs. Starlight’s use of Time Travel arguably being one of the highest threats to Equestria as they knew it throughout Twilight and her friends’ era.
Starlight: I tried to change the past with a Time Travel spell by preventing the Elements from earning their cutie marks… It took seeing multiple timelines of bad outcomes and some soft spoken words from Twilight before I was finally convinced to get back to the present safe and sound…
Sunset just stands there distraught, and her face towards her daughter becomes even more stern.
Sunset: Starlight… An act like that… if I were the one to see you do that… I would of had the hard choice of having to turn my own daughter into stone.. or sent to Tartaurus! You don’t mess with time travel! Do you have any idea how many lives that effects?!
Starlight: I know, I know, I know! I kick myself for it everyday… I never even gave Twilight the full context of why I did it back then… I told her what put me on the path was Sunburst earning his cutie mark and leaving me in sparsely populated and friendless Sire’s Hollow…
But I left out that you disappeared 2 weeks after I was born…
I left out that when my father was at work... I was left alone at the house, not even one babysitter as a mother figure to tell me right from wrong... and a naive father…
I left out that not only did I read a manifesto that only reinforced my beliefs about Cutie Marks… I also got my very own Cutie Mark by using a spell book you left behind in the house after an intense magical outburst… I never even mentioned back then that I couldn’t understand my mark…
Or perhaps more accurately… I didn’t want to understand it…
Thus over years of indoctrination, I eventually put it into action when I took over a small village and plotted to expand. But then I was defeated by Twilight and the other Elements of Harmony... my hypocrisy exposed as they managed to show I still had my Cutie Mark to the entire village and thus had been lying to them… I ran away, occasionally keeping up with Twilight’s movements.
Until... I finally made my move and gave in to my darkest impulses… I entered her castle and went to change the past… Battling Twilight as the timelines changed… It still took a bit of time… but seeing all those horrible futures… and Twilight speaking to me softly near the end… I finally gave in, and turned myself in fully expecting a harsh punishment for what I did… What Twilight did instead… I couldn’t have ever expected…
She extended the hoof of friendship, and put me under her wings as her student. I couldn’t believe it myself, I had done such terrible things and from all they knew, for such petty reasons as a friend moving away… Not that I wasn’t grateful for not being as harshly punished as I probably should’ve been… but another thing about being under Twilight’s wing… she sort of became the mother figure I never had in my life at that point… and this was an opportunity to finally feel how that felt like…
Starlight starts tearing up heavily
Starlight: I just didn’t have a very happy early life because you were gone, mother! I was so jealous of other ponies! I was left with almost no reason to care what happened to the world when it all seemed so unfair!
Twilight and her friends get worldwide recognition as heroic, talented ponies not just because of their marks… but they also had lovely families and friends that loved them, were always around, and/or didn’t keep such important secrets from them! And while I never understood how I got it until now, because I had so much raw magical power... perhaps I thought it was just my destiny to change Equestria in the way I saw fit...
But then my Equality Cult was foiled in “Our Town”... I thought I would only end up rotting in jail if I allowed myself to be captured, so I gave in to my worst instincts and decided to get revenge on Twilight and her friends in the best manner possible while also proving cutie marks weren’t the be-all to end-all once-and-for-all. And Time Travel felt so enticing to that goal...
I wanted to see Twilight’s face when she sees cutie marks don’t matter and the world would of been fine without her and her friends finding their talents. But each timeline kept backing up what Twilight was saying... Especially the one where Equestria was nothing but a cloudy, deserted wasteland!
I gave in to dark instincts prior to time traveling, but I never aimed to actually kill anypony nor end nearly all life on Equestria! I foolishly thought everypony’s lives would generally be unchanged without the Elements of Harmony finding their marks! I still cared about Equestria at large, I just refused to believe 6 Cutie Marks were so important to the world when all I had known about cutie marks was the loss of my only friend and utter confusion and disdain about my own... And never having that mother figure in my life to tell me right from wrong…
If only you had survived, Mother! *sniff* I may have never gone the path I went down!
Starlight covers her eyes with her hooves and just starts sobbing uncontrollably on the ground. Sunset now hearing the full context lowers her head, and lessens her stern look at her daughter. She sits down for a moment and stays silent. Before outstretching her hooves to call Starlight in for another hug.
Sunset: …Come here, dear. You look like you need another hug from me
Starlight sniffs, and is a little bit surprised she managed to get her mother on hugging terms after she admitted how dire her actions got. Starlight walks on over into her Mother’s hooves and continues to sob right into her mother’s shoulder. Tears again falling through the transparent spirit. Suddenly, her mother lets go of the hug and starts singing toward Starlight.
((To the tune of My Past is Not Today))
Sunset: Answers…
Was all you desired… But all that grew inside of you was the darkness you acquired…
When you began to fall And you lost the path ahead… That’s when your friends found you And they lifted you instead!
(Sunset jumps up slightly kicking her hind legs as she transforms her body from the waist down into her spirit tail and triumphantly flies around her daughter as she sings the chorus)
Like a phoenix burning bright in the skkkkkyyyyyyy! I’ll show there’s another side to you... You can’t denyyyyyyy!
I may not know what the future holds But hear me when I saaaay... That your past does not define you... ‘Cause your past is not todaaaaaay!
(Starlight feels the warmth and comfort of her mother’s singing get to her as her tears start streaming more in joy rather then from admitting everything she’s done. Though she still expresses some concerns)
Starlight: My... past is not today...? I don’t know about that... It’s certainly always felt like it’s still today... because I can’t help but always think about it... *sniff*
Sunset: Your past is what shaped you into the pony you are today, that’s all true. There’s no shame in admitting things you’ve said and done were wrong. But you also don’t have to feel like who you were in the past is still who you are now. You alone... have the power to shape yourself into the pony you want to be...
(Starlight smiles and raises her head high, as she begins to sing a verse of her own towards her mother)
Starlight: Vengeance…
Is what I belieeeeved…
Would be the only way...
to make them seeeeeee…
Because you disappeared...
And I found myself alone…
Until you came down like a comet...
And now it truly feels like hoooome!
(Starlight charges up her horn to allow her to levitate herself in the room, she used it originally before she got her cutie mark. And eventually mastered it by the time she fought with Twilight across the timelines, but is now simply using it to go in sync with her flying spirit mother in the air)
Like a phoenix burning bright
In the skkkkkyyyyyyy!
I’ll show there’s another side to me
You can’t denyyyyyyy!
I may not know what the future holds
But hear me when I saaaay...
That my past does not define me...
‘Cause my past is not todaaaaay!
(Starlight and Sunset quiet down their voices to repeat the chorus together)
Sunset & Starlight: Like a phoenix burning bright... in the sky...
Sunset/Starlight:
I’ll show there’s another side to you/I’ll show there’s another side to me
Sunset & Starlight: You can’t deny!
Sunset & Starlight: I may not know what the future holds
But hear me when I say…
Sunset/Starlight:
That your past does not define you/That my past does not define me
‘Cause your past is not todaaaaaay!/’Cause my past is not todaaaaaay!
Once they float themselves back down, with Starlight deactivating her hover and Sunset reforming her spirit tail back into her hindlegs and pony tail while both of them slowly float back down to the floor. They once again embrace eachother as Sunset softens her voice as she comforts her daughter further.
Sunset: I wish I could of been there for you too, Starlight. I would of gladly told you how special Cutie Marks actually are. Both Myself and Princess Celestia thought at one point thought my mark meant I was destined to be the next Princess of the Sun. But perhaps, whether I changed my destiny or perhaps what I now hoped would actually be my true destiny was… so that one day, I’d instead simply be your sunshine… showing you the light and warmth of a loving Mother, always there for you, and supporting you on whatever path you took…
But because I was gone… you had no such sunshine. And not even a sliver of moonlight to comfort you as you fell deeper and deeper into darkness. At least you understand where you went wrong, you can say sorry, you can feel remorse, it doesn’t make what you did justified, but the fact you can actually learn and there was still hope for you to change yourself into a better pony… is probably ultimately why Twilight decided to put you under her wing as her student…
I love you, Starlight… I hope you know that…
Starlight: *sniff* I love you too, mom!
The mother-daughter hug after their song lasts a good long while, the rest of the group smiling or crying joyous tears again as Starlight came clean to her mother about what she did. And Sunset answering her daughter with the comfort of her mother she couldn’t get for her entire life until now. It’ll never erase what Starlight has done, Starlight certainly never will quite forgive herself for doing what she did.
But she’s finally gotten most of the things she’s always wanted during her life. Lots of friends, she now recognizes that her cutie mark shows her true self as the daughter of a former Celestia protege who became a student of the next one, and is for now the Principal of the School of Friendship where she’ll be helping hold up Twilight’s ideals to the next generation of both ponies and non-ponies alike, and now she has her mother back to talk to whenever she can stop by to see Spike summon her spirit back down.
They let go of the hug and stand back up, Twilight herself tears up with liquid pride for Starlight for coming clean the way she did. She wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to straight up admit what she had done right after informing Sunset of the one time Starlight saved Equestria from Queen Chrysalis. But she’s proud of Starlight for bravely going forward with admitting it, even to her Mother who dedicated her life to protecting Equestria’s way of life.
Twilight: I’m very proud of you, Starlight.
Applejack: That took guts t’ admit t’ your Mother, Starlight. Perhaps some o’ the strongest, honest feelings ah’ve ever seen. If ah could, ah’d let ya borrow the Element o’ Honesty necklace fo’ this.
Firelight: I’m happy to know that you’ve obviously inherited your mother’s singing talent too... you both sing so beautifully... *sniff*
Starlight: Thank you all…
Everyone in the room takes a small moment to smile and help comfort Starlight further. Allowing some free time before Twilight finishes her recap of what they’ve faced over the years.

Songs in the Night (3/?)
Characters: Halsin/OMC, Astarion, Wyll, Gale
Rating: M
Words: 1627
Summary: Halsin and Langoth fight for their lives--and souls--on the fugue plane while in the Underdark Gale struggles to complete the ritual to bring them back to life.
They had only to persevere long enough for revival. To clasp hands at the precise moment the last words were spoken on the material plane.
But in the shadow of the dragon’s enormous form, blasted by the heat that radiated from its black sides as though from a blazing furnace, that seemed nigh impossible.
“Behind me,” Halsin said to the ranger, grimacing against the dragon’s roar. Instead, Langoth stood beside him, drawing his bow. Although his longsword and dagger had not survived the fatal journey between planes, his ironwood bow was imbued with deep magic and a brother’s love and had traveled with the soul of its owner to this purgatory. Seeing it in his hands gave him heart.
Langoth loosed an arrow at the ancient styx dragon’s neck; it merely plinked off its armored scales.
The dragon seemed to chuckle, exhaling plumes of flame with its laughter. Your spirits will make a meager meal but there is rich entertainment in watching you struggle, at least, said the dragon. It raised one clawed foot, blotting out the grey sky and Halsin dove, a line of white hot fire screaming across the back of his leg where the dragon’s spur caught his flesh. He yelled as its poison sank into muscle--his soul, in fact, for in this plane, body and soul were one.
The pain was vivid. Halsin opened himself to it, allowed it to sharpen his focus and turned back to the dragon. There was no weakness he could perceive, no gap in the undulant ranks of its black scales. But every dragon was tender around the muzzle and this one had foolishly lowered his, the better to watch him suffer. Halsin screamed again for effect, clutching his leg and the dragon sank even lower, its face in striking range. Marshaling all of his strength, Halsin drew the club from his back and threw it like a javelin into the dragon’s nose. It struck true, showering him a waterfall of hot, black blood, like tar.
The creature’s tortured shriek was terrible as it echoed across their minds. Halsin staggered over to Langoth, both his wound and his head on fire.
“When the time comes--whatever else should happen,” Halsin said, “You must take my hand.”
Before Langoth could reply, the dragon was upon them again. It was no longer toying with them: now it was out for blood. Only luck saved Halsin from being cut in two as he dove away--this time the dragon’s claws sliced through empty air.
How much longer? Langoth asked. He wove and tumbled around the dragon’s legs, avoiding its swiping claws with limber grace that might be a dance but for the raging dragon above them.
The monster busy with Langoth, Halsin ignored the throbbing pain in his leg and closed his eyes for a moment to test the link he’d left to the plane where their bodies lay, lifeless.
...was a mad idea, what if they don’t come back at all? Across the planes, Astarion’s voice was watery and hollow, as though he were speaking from the other end of a very long sea cave.
Master Halsin’s nearly past the point of no return, looks like, Wyll said. Hells, what’s that on his leg?
Gale’s voice echoed more forcefully in Halsin’s mind. Less commentary, if you please, this does require a bit of focus, you know--Halsin, is that you? Is it time?
Almost, he thought, Be ready. He felt the wizard’s assent and turned back to the fray. Langoth had sunk an ice arrow into the dragon’s nostril and it was trying to scratch it away, howling from its sting.
Halsin dashed over to the ranger, avoiding the sweep of the dragon’s tail as it staggered and bellowed in blind rage. They would just have to hope the distraction lasted long enough to complete the ritual. Langoth looked shaken but unhurt, his keen eyes watchful. Even as the dragon roared above them, Halsin felt a surge of love, of humility in the face of its enormity: greater than any ancient guardian of the Fugue Plane, greater even than death. “It’s time,” he said. Their hands joined and he reached across the void again, to Gale.
What if it’s too late? Langoth said. He sensed the ranger’s despair.
“Just don’t let go. No matter what happens.”
In answer, Langoth interlaced his fingers and squeezed them tight. The druid shut his eyes and perceived, worlds away, Gale whispering the incantations that would bring their souls back.
Halsin, Langoth’s voice rang in his mind, sharp with fear.
He opened his eyes to see the dragon bearing down on them, its mouth open, throat welling with blue fire.
“Don’t let go,” Halsin said, even as every instinct screamed at him to break away, to dive to safety. Langoth gripped his hand so hard he feared his bones would bruise.
The styx dragon bore down on them, a gout of flame shooting from its maw. Halsin closed his eyes again. The ritual was nearly complete--a few words away, if Gale did not stumble.
I need to tell you something, Langoth said. While there’s time. I--
But before he could finish, darkness took them both.
*
“...breathing, that has to be a good sign, surely?”
Dim, green light danced around him. Langoth moaned and shut his eyes again. Cold, he was so cold. Everything from his waist up was agony: pain that throbbed, ached, stung, burned, and stabbed. From the waist down, all was numb.
“Langoth,” Wyll said. He heard the warlock approach but couldn’t bear to open his eyes again. His voice sounded distant. “Hells, he’s properly torn up. Here, give us that potion.”
A hand cradled his head, tipped it back, and another held a phial of healing potion to his bloodied lips. It slid down his throat and he sighed as it took effect, restoring life to his stiff limbs. A sickening crunch as his spine reknit itself and sensation rushed back to his legs. He shivered. It felt as though he’d never be warm again.
“Halsin,” he said, remembering. The fugue plane, the dragon, the blue flames--he struggled to his hands and knees and collapsed with a groan.
“It’s alright, mate. Halsin is just there, look.” Wyll pointed to the other corner of the courtyard, where the druid was staggering to his feet, shaking his thick mane of hair and rubbing his face. Langoth sank back down in relief. They had made it, somehow.
“I’m fine too,” Astarion said. “If you were wondering. I also nearly died, on your behalf. Again.”
“Thank the gods,” Langoth rasped with a smile. He shut his eyes and breathed deeply--real air, again. Even though it was centuries stale and stank of fungus and dead minotaur, there was no sweeter smell.
“Actually, thank Gale,” the wizard said, approaching with Halsin by his side. “It was a very near thing, indeed. Suppose I owed you for all the times you’ve pulled me back from death’s door.”
The druid leaned over him and took Langoth’s icy hands between his own. “Thank you,” Langoth whispered.
Halsin laid a hand on his chest. “Don’t speak. You need food. Your soul has been too long in Kelemvor’s kingdom and needs to be fully restored.”
“And nothing better for that than a nice warming mug of soup,” Gale said. “I would know. I shall see to it.”
An arm around Halsin’s waist, Langoth limped past the minotaur corpses laid out on blood slick flagstones to sit in the fort’s cozy refectory by the fire that Gale had set roaring with a cantrip.
“Rest here,” Halsin said, helping into a dusty leather chair which was surprisingly comfortable, considering its age. “But don’t sleep yet. Your soul’s connection to your body is still too tenuous.”
“Stay with me?” he asked. Their eyes met and warmth spread through him; heat not just from the roaring fire. Gale busied himself nearby with the cooking, humming tunefully as he banged pots and spoons and asking Astarion if he might use his dagger to mince the garlic.
Halsin eased down beside Langoth on a rickety bench, favoring one leg.
“The dragon?” It still hurt to speak.
Halsin nodded, wincing as he settled onto the bench. “It will mend, in time.”
“Did I hear the word dragon?” Wyll said. “I think that might be next on my list, having taken down a minotaur single handedly.”
Astarion shot him an acid look from across the room.
“Well, almost single handedly. Alright, you lot all helped.”
“Your magnanimity, Wyll, is as ever, inspirational,” Gale said, magicking a stream of hot water into the cookpot.
Langoth laughed, and felt a little warmer still. It was good, he reflected, to be alive. The heady scent of garlic and onions sizzling over the fire reached his nose and his stomach growled.
“Well, our foray into the Underdark is off to a wonderful start,” Astarion said from the shadows. “I just can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. Perhaps decapitation?” He met Langoth’s eye.
“Stop sulking in the corner, Astarion,” Langoth said. “We survived, didn’t we?”
The vampire spawn scoffed but he approached and even sat on the bench with Halsin. At the opposite end, but it was a start.
“Mad idea, coming down here,” Astarion said, looking moodily into the fire. He turned to Langoth and with unexpected emotion said, “We almost lost you.”
“Well, you didn’t,” Langoth said. “And we will make it to Moonrise Towers.”
He did not fail to observe the expression of foreboding on Halsin’s weathered features. He’d never seen the druid look so tired. Again, he perceived there was something he was holding back, some unspoken burden he carried. Langoth took his hand but he only patted it absently, staring into the dark.

Let’s Stay Together - Izzy Stradlin x Reader (Part 2)
Y/N starts her new job, agrees that Izzy’s water is hot, and narrowly dodges an interrogation from Duff
warnings for swearing, mentions of drug use, and very mild Duff abuse (specifically his toe)
also on ao3 :)
------------------------------------------------
“First off, you gotta be able to clean dishes.”
“Oh don’t worry about that.” I delivered my most charming smile. “I’m a dab hand when it comes to soap and water, Angus.”
Izzy huffed quietly in amusement as he set down a chopping board, and I had to work to keep the pleasant expression on my face.
“I don’t doubt it, Y/N/N.” Angus replied jovially, eyes twinkling under his undulating brow. “Only other condition is I have to like you enough to be around you five days a week.”
I bit my lip and sighed dramatically. “Shit, well if it’s not meant to be... Where’s my coat?”
He belted out a laugh and strode further into the kitchen, slapping my back (and politely ignoring the way I jumped about a foot in the air).
“Come on, we gotta get you set up before the orders start. It’ll get real busy soon. You wouldn’t think so, on a Thursday afternoon...” He continued as he led me to the sinks at the back, marching past Izzy who shot me a wink and laughed silently at the mock-bewildered face I pulled.
There isn’t much you can explain about washing up, further than pointing to a sink and then some dishes, but Angus gave it a shot anyway, doling out helpful tips like, “This one’s the cold tap, that one’s hot. Be careful, alright? The hot water is pretty damn hot.” Eventually, mercifully, his commentary ran dry and he bustled over to dice veg with Izzy at one of the counters. A few hours passed with me scrubbing my way through various pots and pans, occasionally enjoying Angus’ happy chatter about this and that whenever service calmed down. He had something to say about just about everything, that man.
Although you wouldn’t know it from the way he spoke, Angus Walker was only in his early thirties. Smoking one too many packs a day for about ten too many years had reduced his voice to a low scratchy rumble, and it matched perfectly with the strange little rambling tales he liked to share. His funniest kitchen war stories usually centred around his time starting out in Chicago. They were also evidently his favourites to tell - he’d get properly invested, slipping into thickly accented voices for each character. The way he reminisced, you’d think he was referring to things that took place fifty years ago.
Although not especially close, we’d been familiar since I first arrived in LA. Of course, since Izzy got the job doing food prep for him at Andrea’s, we bumped into quite regularly - it was usually Angus who answered the back door, and he was very generous with Izzy’s smoke breaks whenever I came calling. Weirdly enough though, Duff had also previously worked for him at a bakery, which was conveniently only ten minutes up the road from the call centre I was temping at at the time (another job which bit the dust pretty fast). I used to pop by everyday over my lunch hour to chat with all the staff in the break room. Duff made a habit of stuffing my pockets on my way out with all the goods that didn’t survive the ovens, constantly trying to feed me up, and even back then Angus would always turn a blind eye.
All round, he was just a really nice bloke. Didn’t half harp on though, I mused, tuning in to follow the end of a lengthy discussion about the guy I’d replaced.
“Damn sight better to have you on the team, anyway.” He concluded, pottering away to rummage around for something in the walk-in. I turned and caught a knowing smirk from Izzy.
“Comin’ out for a smoke?” He asked, jerking his head towards the door.
I nodded and swivelled round to check with Angus.
“Sure honey, take all the time you need! I’ll hold down the fort over here!” He hollered in reply and I stifled a small laugh. I had a feeling he was just grateful for a new, even marginally more responsive ear to chew off as he worked - Izzy could be an absolute brick wall when he set his mind to it.
We stepped outside into a light drizzle and the man in question burst into laughter, ducking with a delighted grin as I clouted him round the back of the head.
“You are a such a fuckin’ flirt!” He wheezed, only spurred on by my unsuccessful attempts to look unamused. His shoulders shook as he plucked a crumpled pack of Marlboro’s from his back pocket, still chuckling as he passed one to me.
“Angus doesn’t mind.” I mumbled, glancing away to hide my smirk.
He cackled again. “No, he fuckin’ doesn’t.”
Our elbows knocked together, a short fit of giggles escaped me before I could properly stamp it down. My voice trembled when I replied, “My skills really are wasted on this shit, huh?”
All it took was a glance and we both devolved into hysterics again.
You could probably forgive us for feeling a bit crazed that afternoon. Neither of us had got even a glimpse of sleep, having been kept up all night by Slash and a steady supply of pills from his various pockets; the man really did have everything stashed away in there. The day had broken and morning was well on it’s way to noon when Slash finally left to restock, Izzy and I tagging along just for something to do. I didn’t have much memory of our bleary walk around town to find a dealer, apart from a single clear image of the cold, grey sunlight dancing over Izzy’s face. A little weird, granted, but I figured that could be easily blamed on the pills.
It was a bit of a miracle that we actually to made it to Andrea’s on time. It was even more of a miracle that we weren’t just turned away in our bedraggled state. Getting a good look now we were outside, Izzy still looked objectively awful, with big red rings shadowing his eyes and a slightly twitchy quality to all his movements. An unruly part of my brain helpfully reminded me that despite this, he was still extremely attractive. Another, more unruly part suggested that, yes, I definitely still wanted to shag him like this, and hey presto, now I was imagining him pinning me against that metal door and fucking those hangover jitters out of me. Christ.
No sleep, an ever-intensifying comedown, and an incorrigible imagination – the real miracle would be surviving to the end of this shift.

“Sheena is-“ The words garbled as I dunked my head back under the showerhead to rinse. “A punk rocker, no-o-o-o-ow!” My feet slipped a little, stumbling over an empty beer can which floated above the drain, and I splashed my face to wash off the soapy water, still singing cheerily. “She’s a punk, punk,” I climbed out of the tub to snatch up the towel from the floor, (“A punk rocker!”) giving myself a quick once over (“Punk, punk-“) before hitching it up around me. (“A punk rocker-er!”) I shook my hair out enthusiastically and immediately winced as that stubborn hungover headache clattered around my skull again like an enraged bull, battering away at my temples. I could hardly wait to meet the guys and get a drink inside me, if only to get rid of the incessant pounding in my head.
I plugged on determinedly with the song, neatly bringing the chorus to an end as I left the bathroom (spoiler: she is still definitely a punk rocker). A wry grin was leering at me from the other side of the door.
“Is she now?”
I hid a smile and squeezed some more water out of my hair as I pushed past to search out some clothes.
“Yeah, weren’t you listenin’? I thought me and Joey made it pretty clear.”
A loud thunk sounded from the window. He brushed behind me to answer it, hand flitting over my bare shoulder briefly, and I swallowed as I sifted haphazardly through the accumulated rubbish on the floor for my skirt. I sighed, standing up to ask Izzy if he remembered where we’d lobbed it before, and the unkempt stranger outside jeered suddenly. How he had the energy, I had no idea. The sheen of sweat on his forehead hinted at a pretty nasty case of dopesickness – after all, that was why he’d come knocking.
“Shit, Stradlin, what else you got hidin’ in there?” My nose scrunched up in irritation, any sympathy vanishing instantly, but Izzy beat me to it.
“Fuck off.” He hissed and reached out to give him a harsh shove, and the man stumbled backwards, startled.
“Jeez, man, I was j-“ The window slammed shut in his face and he gawked through the dirty glass for a second before dashing off into the alley, probably remembering the fresh dose of smack in his hand. Izzy lingered, glowering at his retreating back. On second thoughts, maybe it was the glower that sent him running.
“Um, have you seen-“ I began as he turned and said, “I should’ve beat his fuckin’ ass for that. Sorry.”
I blinked, taken aback by the ferocity in his tone. “It’s fine, Iz.” He eyed me dubiously. “Really. I would’ve said the same thing, I mean-“ I flounced a hand across my body, adopting a terrible imitation of a Californian drawl, “Have you seen this bod?”
He snorted and produced my lost mini-skirt from somewhere in his unmade bed, offering it to me as he changed the subject abruptly.
“How was my shower?”
“Uh... Functional?” That was… An oddly pointed question. “I’m clean as a whistle now, so…” I yanked a pair of tights up over my arse and stepped into the skirt.
“Hot enough for you?”
So that was what he was getting at. I smirked drily and rolled my eyes as I clipped up my bra. “Put Nicky’s to shame.”
“Good to hear.” He handed me a dark blue shirt and watched me slip it on with a smirk to match mine. “You ready to head out?”
I glanced up, pausing my buttoning, to raise an eyebrow. “Feelin’ impatient, Izzy?”
His hands covered mine to fasten the last few buttons up to my chest, surely feeling the way my heartbeat revved up a little in anticipation. He dipped his head, just enough to lock eyes with me, that wicked smirk still firmly in place, and practically purred, “Always.”
*****
“Y/L/N!”
Duff waved me down as he left his apartment block, leaping out into the road and racing over to meet me outside Izzy’s building, barely avoiding a motorbike as it whizzed past.
“Hey, man.” His grin was infectious, bright even in the persistent spitting rain, and it managed to take some of the bite from my grumbling reply.
“You’re a bit chipper for this time in the afternoon, aren’t you?”
“You left very early last night.” No time to waste on small talk, apparently.
I started walking purposefully in the direction of the Strip, not sparing him a glance as he plodded along beside me. I didn’t have to see his face to know that there was still a teasing grin plastered all over it.
“You weren’t the only one.”
“I wasn’t?”
He raised his eyebrows, almost managing to keep a serious expression.
I bit down a giddy smile (Jesus, where was that coming from?) and dug my hands into the pockets of Izzy’s coat. “Piss off, Duff.”
“I didn’t even say anything!”
I narrowed my eyes at him pointedly, (yep, there was the grin) and stopped to help shield him from the wind as he lit a cigarette. He repeated it and passed one to me.
“Cheers.” We strode on, my hair whipping and snapping around me like a whirlwind. I huddled further into the leather, firmly ignoring the unmistakeably Izzy scent that was ingrained in the collar, and the heat it sparked inside me.
“Gee, that’s a nice jacket you’re wearing.” Duff continued gleefully, a generous helping of sarcasm injected into his voice. I sighed and shook my head in exasperation. “Now where have I seen it before?”
I shot him an amused look. “What’s up, McKagan?”
“Who, me? Ohhh, nothin’ at all, zilch. Just makin’ a couple of observations, that’s all.”
“Sure about that?”
“Totally.” He paused as I dodged a frenzied woman in a pantsuit. “So many different things to observe, don’t you think?”
I snorted. “I don’t know, Duff, but I bet you’re gonna tell me.”
“You and Izzy disappear together last night, now you’re wearin’ his clothes this morning,” I checked, a little alarmed to find that I actually was wearing his shirt again today, while Duff threw his hands up in the air. “God, what could it all mean?”
I spluttered, laughing, and ducked under the awning of the liquor store to take one last drag of smoke before heading in. Of course, he followed me.
“Don’t you have somewhere to be?” The change rattled in my hand as I scoured the shelf in front of me, hardly paying attention to Duff swanning around on the side of the aisle.
“I’m just sayin’,” He called, “If I didn’t know better I’d say you two were gettin’ pretty cosy.”
I rolled my eyes and grabbed another cheap bottle of rum, sidling past him to deposit everything at the checkout.
“Hey Al, how’s it goin’?” I sighed, counting out the last of my quarters on the tabletop.
“He givin’ you trouble, sweetheart?” He nodded gruffly over my head at the giant blonde softie behind me, currently inspecting the label of a bottle of red wine.
I laughed, trying to imagine what Duff might look like to an untrained eye. He could be pretty scary when he needed to, after all. “No, he’s fine.”
“What’s goin’ on?” Duff’s hands landed on my shoulders and I flinched a little despite myself.
“If you’re sure.” Al muttered under his breath, patiently divvying up my assortment of coins and dollar bills. “You got another fifty cents, honey?”
I winced. That was all the cash I had. Duff’s touch disappeared from my shoulders to delve into his jean pockets, rooting around hastily.
“Sorry man, that’s all I got. I’ll leave the-“
“No, no, don’t be silly. Owe me it, alright?”
“But hey, I have-“ I silenced Duff with a light stomp on his toe.
“Thanks mate, I really appreciate it.” I gathered up the bottles under my arm, promising to be back with the remainder soon.
“Hey, forget it Y/N. Tell you what, keep that fifty. Buy some fuckin’ breakfast next time, okay?”
I snickered and waved as we turned to leave. “Will do! See you later!”
The bell above the door jingled chirpily as we left and Duff paused to spark another couple of cigarettes for us before stepping back out into the street. I frowned as he continued back the way we’d just come. He hadn’t really just left his apartment to follow me to the shop, had he?
“Are you goin’ home?”
“Nah, I’m late for work.” He said, looking remarkably unfazed.
“Shouldn’t you be walkin’ the other way, then?”
“I’ll walk you back first.” I opened my mouth to protest but he forged ahead before I could. “Didn’t get to the bottom of my observations yet.”
I sighed and waited for him to continue, but he stayed quiet instead, even when Izzy’s building came back into sight.
“What do you want me to say?” I said finally. “I thought everybody knew already, we fuck now and then. It’s not exactly big news.”
We stopped outside the door and I puffed away the last few tokes of my cigarette as I waited for him to reply. He was smiling fondly at me, and I found it infuriating for some reason.
“And you’re sure it’s just sex?”
“Uh, yeah.” I frowned. “Is that not what I said?”
He was still smiling and appearing quite entertained by my confusion, and I shook him off, wrinkling my nose, when he reached down to ruffle my hair.
“You know, you’re a real dumbass, Y/N/N.”
I scowled. “Yes, thanks, I did know that.”
He rocked back on his heels to fix me with a calculating stare.
“What does Izzy think?” He said carefully. Huh?
“What the fuck d’you mean, what does-”
“Shit!” Duff blurted, eyes widening comically. “I gotta get to work!” He turned on his heel and started sprinting back into town, shouldering through the midday stragglers and throwing out frantic apologies as he barged past people. In the space of about ten seconds, he was gone, flying out of view round the corner with a final shout of “Come see me when you get your head outta your ass!”
I stood there, dumbfounded. What the hell did he mean by that?
Curiously enough, he wasn’t the only one who’d suggested… Well, whatever it was he’d been trying to suggest. Axl had pulled me aside when we were out the night before last, bellowing in my ear that he was happy for me and Iz, of all things. If that wasn’t unsettling enough, him and Slash had taken to calling Izzy’s apartment ‘the love nest’ since I’d started hanging around there constantly, bedding down with Izzy every single night this week - as if I needed a reminder. I spent more time there than I did anywhere else at the moment, and it was getting a bit ridiculous. I’d been offered a roof to crash under for one night, and here I was, a week later, making myself a permanent fixture. He hadn’t mentioned it yet though, which seemed kind of unusual for someone normally so blunt.
I was still lost in thought as I twisted the cap off one of the bottles and gulped down a bolstering mouthful of whisky, trudging into the hallway to rap on Izzy’s door. The whole thing was very weird, I decided, screwing the cap back on. Very weird, indeed. And here I was, returning again. Bloody hell, what a disaster.
But then the door swung open, and I was greeted with a greedy kiss, emitting a pleased (if a little surprised) moan. Izzy was just as gloriously naked as I’d left him, with keen hands pulling me inside and pushing me up against the back of the door to kiss the breath out of me, already stripping me of his jacket and depositing it in a heap on the floor next to the booze.
“You were gone a long time.” He gasped, somehow still managing an air of nonchalance, even as he tore my (his) shirt up over my head. I wriggled out of it and launched myself back into his embrace, pressing up for another filthy kiss. His hands carded through my damp hair, and he broke away panting, confused. “It’s rainin’?”
I huffed, laughing a little, and dragged him with me towards the bed. “You wanna talk about the weather right now?”
His mouth stretched out to form a grin, and crashed back into mine - and all thoughts of Duff and his oddly foreboding questions swiftly evaporated.

Saturday, 2nd October 1971, 1:15 pm
As September melted into October, a noticeable chill fell over the castle. If one woke before sunrise and looked out of the window, they would be treated to the sight of the green lawns coated with a silvery frost, but there was still enough warmth in the air that it disappeared with the coming of dawn.
Remus was not looking forward to the full moon in two days' time, but he was pleased he'd be spending it in the fire-warmed house in Hogsmeade, and not in the garden hole his dad had dug for him. He had been hoping to get plenty of rest over the weekend. The full moon that month fell on a Monday, their busiest day of the week, with no free periods and three magically demanding classes. It was going to be exhausting. Unfortunately, James had other ideas for their Saturday.
'It's the Quidditch try-outs. We have to go!'
'But I'm tired, James. I don't really want to do anything this weekend.'
'You don't have to do anything, just sit and watch.'
Remus found it difficult to argue with that. He couldn't explain that it wasn't just a physical tiredness but a deep spiritual one that throbbed all the way down to his soul. No one would understand if he said that the slightest sound made his ears ring and his brain buzz. They would think him a freak if he tried to explain that every scent burnt his nose and choked his breath.
Remus turned away from James so he wouldn't see the pain in his expression when he climbed off the bed. 'Alright. I'll come. Let me get my cloak.'
James cheered, and Remus cringed at the sound.
When they got down to the common room, Sirius looked surprised to see him. 'I thought you were going to have a nap?'
Remus shrugged. 'James persuaded me to come.'
Sirius frowned at James but didn't say anything further.
'Come on then. What are we waiting for?' Peter asked. He was wearing a Gryffindor hat and scarf set and had painted his face in red and gold stripes. They looked glittery.
'You know this is just the try-outs, don't you, mate? It's not a match,' Remus said.
Peter laughed. 'I know, I just really wanted to test the paints.'
They made their way out to the Quidditch pitch where the try-outs were being held, and Remus found the cool air soothing on his aching joints. He couldn't understand why the pain had started so much earlier this month. It didn't usually hurt until the day of the full moon.
When they reached their destination, they took seats in the Gryffindor area of the stands, and Remus breathed a sigh of relief that he was sitting down again. But it was to be short-lived because, when the potential team members arrived and began displaying their skills, the noise was horrendous. People cheered for their favourites and their friends; James was keeping up a running commentary next to him, and Peter was whooping every few minutes. Sirius, though, was uncharacteristically quiet. Remus was grateful for it, even if it didn't make that much difference to his overall level of suffering.
Sirius bent close to him, and Remus fought against his instinct to move away. He trusted Sirius. There was no need to behave like a frightened animal with him. 'Mate, you look like shit. Why don't you go back in? I'll deal with James. I told him not to bother you in the first place.'
'I think I will. I'll go to the library though and see if I can find out anything about the belch powder. James can't complain about me missing tryouts if I'm working on the Halloween display.'
Sirius smiled. 'Good idea, it's quiet in the library. I'll see you later.'
Remus waved goodbye, and as he walked away, he heard James ask Sirius where he was going but didn't hear the reply.
When he reached the library, he browsed the shelves until he found a book on joke-shop products, and then he found a little room with beanbags, on which he curled up to read. It wasn't long until he fell asleep.
-o-o-o-o-
Sirius sat on his bed, putting the finishing touches on his Herbology essay about the care of jewelweed seedlings. It was due first period on Monday, and he didn't want it hanging over his head all the next day when he was trying to have fun. He glanced at his watch for the fifth time in five minutes. Remus still hadn't returned from the library, and it had been eight hours since he left them in the Quidditch stands. How long did it take to do a little research? Sirius couldn't actually answer that question. He'd never done research in his life. Maybe eight hours was a reasonable amount of time. However, it was twenty minutes past curfew, and Remus had no way of getting back to Gryffindor tower without being caught.
'James, I want to go look for Remus. Can I borrow the cloak?'
James glanced up from his own work, looked at his watch and raised his eyebrows, presumably surprised by the time. 'Of course, you don't have to ask. I'd come with you, but I really need to get this homework done. I still have McGonagall's to do after this,' he said, nodding to the parchment he was working on.
'No worries, I'll be quicker alone anyway.'
'Where are you going to look?'
Sirius shrugged. 'He said he was going to the library, so I'll try there first.'
'If he's not there, try the hospital wing. He didn't look too good earlier.'
If you noticed that, why did you drag him out of bed? Sirius thought, but he kept it to himself. He didn't want to start an argument when Remus was missing.
'Good idea,' he said instead, grabbing the silvery cloak from the top of James' trunk before dashing to his own trunk and then Remus'.
'See you later.'
'Good luck,' James and Peter both said, almost in unison. Sirius grinned and waved as he left the dorm room.
Sirius made his way down the Grand Staircase to the library, hidden under the cloak. The castle looked so different at night, and he'd never been out after curfew alone before. It was a little scary. The lights were dimmer and the shadows darker. Sirius felt the sensation of eyes watching him from the gloomy recesses. But that was impossible. He was invisible, for Merlin's sake.
When he reached the door to the library, he found it was locked up for the night. Damn. What was that spell Remus used to get into Flitwick's office the weekend before? Aloe vera? No, that was a plant. Aloemore? Mora? Alohomora? Yes! That was it. He hadn't been able to do it before, but that was just a game. This was far more important. If he didn't get it right, Remus could be shut in the library all night. He could be injured. Or really sick. What if Sirius was wrong about the lycanthropy and Remus was actually sick with something else? Something less predictable. Oh Gods, what if he was in there dying? Sirius had to master this spell. He just had to.
Having worked himself up into a panicked ball of nerves, Sirius clutched his wand and pointed it at the lock. Repeating what he'd seen Remus do to his journal, he moved his wand anti-clockwise and spoke the incantation. Nothing happened.
He tried again. 'Alohomora! Alohomora! Alohomora, you fucking bastard of a lock!'
Okay, he needed to calm down. Sirius took a deep breath, focused all his willpower on his desire to get that lock open, and tried one more time. 'Alohomora,' he said, enunciating every syllable. The lock clicked open. Yes! I am brilliant! he thought, before pushing the door open and hurrying inside. Now, if I were Remus, where would I be?
Sirius jogged up and down the aisles, looking into the various nooks and crannies and checking the rooms that led off the main space. Five minutes into the search, he found him purely by chance. He had poked his head into a small room that had piles of beanbags for students to curl up on. Finding it empty, he had been about to leave and check the next room when he heard a loud snore followed by a shuffle. Sirius crossed the room in three quick strides and discovered Remus, sleeping, crammed between the wall and an enormous orange beanbag. He must have rolled off at some point. Sirius just stared at him for a minute. He looked so tiny next to the giant beanbag, curled into a ball.
Sirius was startled out of his thoughts by the sound of a hacking cough that was far too close for his liking. He pulled the cloak off, crouched down next to Remus and said as loud as he dared, 'Remus, wake up.'
Remus snorted and rolled over. Urgh, if only he could shake him.
'Seriously, Remus, you need to wake up.'
Remus' eyelids fluttered. 'Huh. Wha'? Wha's goin' on?'
'You fell asleep in the library. It's after curfew, and I think there must have been a warning ward on the door because someone's here.'
Remus sat up and blinked rapidly. 'Sirius?'
'Yes, it's me. We need to get out of here.'
A gravelly voice sounding almost gleeful came from nearby. 'I know you're in here. You'll be in so much trouble when we find you.'
'Shit. It's Filch,' Sirius said, running a hand through his hair from the stress of the situation. 'We'll be in big trouble if we're caught in here. I know you don't like to, but do you think you can cope with being under the cloak with me for a few minutes?'
Remus glanced down at his bare hands and back at Sirius. His eyes were wide and scared.
'Here,' he said, pulling two pairs of gloves from his pockets. 'I brought gloves for both of us, and I'll be really careful not to touch your face, I promise, but we really do need to hide.'
Remus hesitated and then nodded. 'Okay.'
Sirius handed one pair of gloves to Remus, and he put the other pair on. 'Thank you for trusting me. You won't regret it. Get up.'
Remus got to his feet, slipped the book he'd been reading into his bag, stepped over the beanbag to stand next to him, and let Sirius swing the cloak over their shoulders and pull the hood up to cover their heads. Just in time. A moment later, Filch appeared at the door to the reading room and they froze, not even daring to breathe.
-o-o-o-o-
Oh, Gods. Sirius smelled so good. All he wanted to do was turn his head and bury his face in his neck. That couldn't be a normal human urge. Other people didn't go around wanting to smell each other. Merlin, he was a freak. Sirius threw the cloak over their shoulders and pulled the hood up, and suddenly his scent was even more concentrated. It was overwhelming. Remus stopped breathing, and in the same moment, Filch appeared in the doorway, holding a lantern.
He didn't enter the room, thankfully. Just glanced around and moved on. Sirius let out a relieved breath next to him. Remus' lungs were screaming at him, and he gave in and sucked in a deep breath. Merlin, how could anyone smell so damned delicious. No! Not delicious. That made Sirius sound like food. He smelled… divine? Intoxicating? No, those weren't quite right either. Remus wracked his brain, entirely focused on the singular problem of finding the right word to describe the scent of Sirius.
Comforting.
Yes, that was it. Sirius smelled comforting. Like curling up in a favourite chair next to a roaring fire with a good book. Remus wanted to curl up on Sirius.
'Mate? You okay?' Sirius whispered. 'You're not freaking out are you?'
Gods, Sirius would be disgusted if he knew what he was thinking. He needed to snap out of it.
'No. I'm okay. We should go.'
'Alright. This is going to be really difficult if we're trying not to touch. Do you think you can cope with putting your arm around me like on the broom?'
Remus wasn't sure he could. It had been easier before, out in the open air and more than a week until the moon. Now, under the confines of the cloak, with Sirius' scent overwhelming him and the wolf so close to the surface, would it be too much?
He tentatively wrapped his arm around Sirius' waist. The warmth of his body bled through both layers of fabric and set his nerves tingling. His head was dangerously close to Sirius' shoulder, though. It shouldn't be an issue. His shoulder was covered by his school robes, but Remus wasn't comfortable with only one layer of fabric between their skin. He let go and moved away.
'I can't do it. It's too close,' he said, feeling his face heat with embarrassment. Gods, he made everything so difficult. Why did Sirius put up with him?
Sirius showed no signs that Remus' inability to co-operate bothered him. He just moved straight on to the next solution. 'Okay, what about if we link arms like the girls do all the time? They seem to be able to walk together like that.'
Remus nodded, and Sirius crooked his arm. He laced his arm through the gap and felt their elbows hook together. It was okay. There was plenty of distance between their exposed skin. This would work.
He glanced up and found Sirius looking down at him, awaiting his verdict. 'I'm good. This is good.'
Sirius grinned. 'Excellent. Let's go.'
They started towards the door, and the movement of air caused by their motion wafted a fresh blast of Sirius' scent into Remus' face.
He inhaled through his nose on purpose, relishing in their proximity and his ability to soak in his scent. Then he felt a wave of shame. He was behaving like an animal. Like a beast. He tried to stop, but he couldn't. The allure of it was too powerful. He wanted to drown in it.
They had reached the Grand Staircase, and Sirius guided him up the steps. Remus' head was swimming, and he tripped a couple of times, but Sirius held him upright by keeping his arm solid and unmoving.
'Almost there now, Remus.'
He felt like his whole body was on fire. Every part of him tingled with the heat from Sirius, and he was surrounded by the scent of him.
The soft thump of Sirius' heartbeat filled his ears. It was racing. Was he scared? Remus didn't want him to be scared. He whimpered.
'You okay there, mate?'
'Yes,' Remus managed to croak out. He was far from okay. Every part of him was focused entirely on Sirius. His smell, his heat, his heartbeat, the sound of his breathing in the silent hall. Merlin, was he hunting? Is that what this was? Was the wolf inside him hunting his friend? Gods, he wasn't fit to be around people. Sirius was just trying to help him, and he was taking advantage. He was despicable.
They reached the portrait of the Fat Lady, and Remus tore himself away from Sirius. Turning his back on him so he wouldn't see the wolf in his eyes. He bent over with his hands on his knees and panted, taking deep, Sirius-free breaths of clean air and trying to clear the smell from his nose and his mind. Behind him, he heard Sirius give the password.
'Come on, mate. Let's get inside,' Sirius said, sounding worried.
Yes, inside. Safety. Remus' thoughts were scattered and erratic. One moment he wanted nothing more than to be close to Sirius. The next, he was recoiling from him. But he somehow managed to pull himself together enough to scramble through the portrait hole into the common room. Sirius led him to a secluded corner and got him to sit down.
'Talk to me.'
Remus stared at his hands. There was no way to explain what he was feeling, and he felt so ashamed. 'I'm okay. It was just a really long time. I'm sorry.'
'Sorry?' Sirius repeated with a snort. 'For what? Being incredibly brave and amazing?'
Remus looked up at him. 'Brave? How can you call me brave? I can't even touch someone without freaking out.'
'And yet you did,' Sirius said. 'Twice. Knowing how it would make you feel, you still did it. And one of those times was just so we could win a stupid game. If that's not bravery, I don't know what is.'
Remus felt like absolute shit. Sirius was praising him, and in reality, all he'd done was put him in grave danger. Gods, he was so selfish, risking infecting his friend with this vile disease just so he wouldn't lose them a game or get caught out of bounds after curfew. Was avoiding detention really worth destroying his friend's entire life? He couldn't ever let it happen again. Next time he would just take the detention.
'Remus?'
'Yeah, sorry. I think I just need to be alone for a bit. I'm going to go to bed.'
'Alright. I'll come up with you.'
Remus hurried up the stairs without looking at Sirius, greeted James and Peter and got straight into bed without even undressing. Despite his exhaustion from the coming moon, sleep did not come easily to him that night. And when he finally did succumb, he had horrifying dreams of Sirius tearing himself apart and erupting into a wolf, while his screams echoed in his ears. 'This is all your fault, Remus. Why did you do this to me?'
-o-o-o-o-
Sirius woke up on Monday morning well aware that there would be a full moon that night. and he intended to keep a close eye on Remus. He was almost certain he was right, but today would prove or disprove his suspicions.
Remus was difficult to wake up that morning, which probably wouldn't have seemed that odd, but he'd slept most of Sunday away and Sirius had found him asleep in the library on Saturday, although he didn't know how long he'd been sleeping for. He really shouldn't be that tired.
They got him out of bed eventually, though, and headed down to breakfast. Sirius offered to join him in the kitchen, but Remus declined, so he followed James and Peter into the Great Hall, a little annoyed that he wouldn't know if Remus actually ate anything.
'Do you think Remus is okay?' James asked. 'He looks ill.'
Sirius tried to deflect. 'He's probably just getting a cold or something.'
Thankfully, they were distracted by the morning post arriving. James received a large box, wrapped in plain brown paper.
'It's from my dad. He's sent the belch powder for Halloween. I'll open it later,' he said, tucking it into his bag quickly.
Peter was staring at the teacher's table. 'McGonagall's getting a lot of post this morning.'
Sirius turned to look. He was right. Seven different owls had deposited parcels in front of her, and she had a wide smile on her face as she spoke to Dumbledore.
'Must be her birthday or something,' he said.
After breakfast, they met back up with Remus in the Entrance Hall and headed out to the greenhouses for Herbology. After an hour spent planting lemongrass, Remus looked ready to collapse. Thankfully, Transfiguration was next, and the first half of the double period was theory, so he was able to sit down for a while. They were learning how to combine the theory of transfiguring an object's colour and material, so they could change both at the same time. Remus dozed off several times, and Sirius was forced to kick his chair to wake him up. During the second half of the lesson where they were attempting to turn a red matchstick into an orange needle, Remus didn't even try. That was strange, but stranger still, McGonagall didn't say a word to him, despite reprimanding three other students for not putting enough effort in.
The evidence was stacking up.
After lunch, they had their second Charms lesson on diffindo and were supposed to be slicing through a piece of cloth, but again Remus just sat with his head on the desk and Flitwick ignored him entirely. Sirius pretended not to notice.
The final lesson of the day was Defence, and Professor Hawthorne lectured them on the chupacabra. Remus looked up briefly with vague interest when Emhio shifted into the creature but made no notes, and Lily seemed quite concerned about him.
Sirius had used his astronomy book the night before to do the calculations and worked out that moonrise was at ten past six. So he was unsurprised when Remus announced on their way to dinner that he was going to go to the hospital wing because he felt unwell. He was leaving more than an hour before moonrise. Did that mean he had to travel a long way? Or that he'd be too out of it to travel at all if he waited much longer? Where did he go? Surely he didn't really spend the night in the hospital wing? Sirius had so many questions.
After dinner, Sirius, James and Peter went to their daily meeting with the birthday person of the day. That day was a fifth-year Hufflepuff called Chris Fletcher. He arrived at exactly six o'clock and greeted them in an upper-class accent. 'Good evening, I hope you are well.' Sirius rolled his eyes.
Then the unexpected happened. Chris was unable to open the door to the room, never mind blow out the candle.
'But it is my birthday,' he said for the tenth time.
'Well, it seems the door disagrees, perhaps you should write to your mother and find out what's going on?'
Fletcher nodded and left, and Sirius turned to James and Peter.
'What the fuck are we going to do? It's only three hours until curfew!'
'We need to find someone else with a birthday,' James said.
'How?' Sirius said. 'We can't just run around the school randomly asking people.'
'McGonagall!' Peter yelled. Sirius and James jumped.
'Where?' Sirius said, spinning around on the spot.
'No. I mean, McGonagall got all those parcels at breakfast this morning.'
'You're right!' James said. 'Do you think she'll do it?'
'Only one way to find out,' Sirius said, already running down the stairs.
They reached McGonagall's office in record time, and James knocked on the door, rather louder than was necessary. They were shocked when it was answered by Professor Dumbledore.
'Hello. You three look to be in an awful hurry.'
James was too stunned to speak, so Sirius took over. 'Sorry, sir. We were looking for Professor McGonagall.'
'Well. I assumed as much. This is her office, I believe,' he said, looking at the sign on the door as if wanting to confirm he was, in fact, in the right room.
'Albus, stop teasing the children. Come in. What can I do for you?'
Dumbledore chuckled and stood aside to allow them entrance. They walked into the office and found Professor McGonagall sitting on one of the two armchairs, a glass of pale green liquid in her hand. Another glass was on the table.
'Professor. We may need your help. But first, I have to ask, is it your birthday today?' Sirius said.
She inclined her head. 'It is.'
'Brilliant. Happy birthday.'
'Thank you. But I'm fairly certain you didn't come here just to wish me a happy birthday.'
'No. We need your help.'
'With?'
Sirius took a deep breath and launched into the explanation complete with wild hand gestures. 'Well. Three weeks ago we found a hidden door. We figured out how to open it. Well, Remus did. And inside was a birthday cake and a poem on the wall. It said if we could blow out the candle on the cake every day for twenty-eight days in a row, we would be rewarded. But it can only be blown out by someone on their birthday. We managed to find someone for every day, but the person who was supposed to do it today, well, it didn't work. We're not sure why. Maybe he was born a minute after midnight and the clock was wrong?'
'So you want me to come and blow the candle out so you don't have to start again?'
'Yes. You see if we miss a day the room will move and we'd have to find it again. We really want to know what's inside. Please, will you help.' Sirius put on his most pleading expression. James actually got down on his knees and put his hands together.
Dumbledore chuckled. 'It sounds very interesting. I've heard rumours of this birthday cake room. I'd rather like to see it for myself.'
Professor McGonagall raised an eyebrow at him. 'I will help on one condition.'
'Anything,' Sirius said, rather rashly.
'I want to be present on the twenty-eighth day in case this "reward" is dangerous.'
James jumped to his feet. 'That's no problem at all. The last day is the fifteenth, and we'll be doing it at six o'clock.'
'Well then,' Professor McGonagall said, standing up. 'Lead the way.'
They led the headmaster and their head of house through the school and up to the seventh-floor landing where Sirius opened the portrait with a dramatic, 'Congratulations.'
'How did you find out the password?' Professor Dumbledore asked with interest.
'The portrait of Silas down there told us,' Sirius said, pointing, and Dumbledore nodded.
'You have to tell the door it's your birthday and be telling the truth to open it,' James explained.
'And how did you work that out?' Professor McGonagall asked.
'Remus translated the runes.'
'Impressive,' she said. 'It is my birthday.'
The door clicked open with the usual quiet fanfare sounding from the surrounding walls. Dumbledore looked around at the noise.
'Fascinating,' he said.
They walked in, and the two professors read the poem on the wall and glanced at the glowing lights. There were sixteen of them by that
point.
'Are those lights keeping track?' Dumbledore asked. They all nodded. 'You're doing very well. Can I ask how you recruited your volunteers?'
'We made posters and hung them on the notice-boards in the common rooms,' Sirius told him.
'Indeed? Very industrious.'
'Thank you, sir.'
'Shall I proceed?' Professor McGonagall asked, arching an eyebrow.
'Ah yes. Please go ahead. I'm quite anxious to see what happens.'
Professor McGonagall bent down and blew out the candle. The fanfare sounded, and a seventeenth light glowed to life on the wall above the words, Happy Birthday, Minerva McGonagall. A moment later the candle re-lit itself.
'Fascinating,' Professor Dumbledore said again, clapping his hands together. 'I do so love a mystery. Congratulations on your find, boys, and we will see you here on the fifteenth. I'm very excited to see what's through that door.' He smiled at them, and he and Professor McGonagall left.
'Minnie's great, isn't she?' Sirius said, grinning at his friends.

5 - “I might just kiss you.”

The castle was far too big than it had any right to be. Had it not been for the Lost Ones that greeted them outside of the castle’s yard, Micah would’ve found it to be quite beautiful. In a way, it still was, only they would’ve preferred if it was completely deserted.
Ever since they stepped through the front gate, there was this… Powerful presence. Something, or a lack thereof, kept this from emerging, they could tell. Maybe it was their awakened magical talent, but this was not something they could easily write off. Micah didn’t voice their concern, however, as they has scurried through the yard, hoping to find some ingredients. Not much, if at all, could be found. Definitely a disappointment.
Micah took the main entrance of the castle while Tharaêl took a door from off the side. The two of them had agreed to split up after they had found two entrances, and they affirmed they would try to meet back up once they were inside.
As soon as Micah entered the interior, they had to engage in combat. Steel sword in hand, a Lost One dashed towards their right, giving them a small opening to rush at it and strike it down with Warnick. They ducked down and slammed the warhammer straight into the kneecaps. Down it went, clanging against the wall and blocking any of the other two Fleshless from heading in that direction. The archer kept its distance while the one wielding a warhammer of its own came running from the left side – iron-forged, and much weaker than their prized weapon.
Timing was much more essential this time, as the swing of one of those packed a punch regardless of their quality. They had to get closer and swing faster. Legs dived out, and both of them began to wind their swings. It was close, and yet Micah managed to hit the skeletal frame of its rib cage before it could make a dent in their armor. The clattering of bones and heavy metal braced the ground with a mess of a now-completely-dead-and-broken corpse.
An instinctive motion to the side sways them to the left, the space where their legs once were rifted by an arrow that clanked along the tile. They almost forgot about the archer that stayed far away from them. Good thinking on the bag-of-bones part, but now it was the only one remaining. Micah charges, reaching the bowman at the bottom of a stone staircase. Since the damn thing knew to aim for the less padded areas, they make a running jump with the momentum of their last swing, giving out a small battle cry as their legs tucked behind them. Warnick clashed directly into its clavicle before the bow’s string launched another arrow, probably aimed at their face, snapping it and the rest of the Lost One’s torso. More shattered bones fell, crunching beneath Micah’s knees. Good thinking on their end for getting those things padded so that the land was less strenuous.
For a moment, they sat still and silent. Another moment, and then, nothing. No growls or the steps of calcium against the hard surfaces, no noise, absolutely nothing. They were in the clear. With a sigh of relief, they stand, dusting off the bits of Lost One from their knee-plates. Branding Warnick in one hand, Micah finally explores the depths of the dining room.
Lavishly decorated with the wealth of some sublime figure, the interior was enormous. Tan and gray stone tiles greeted two separate dining tables, under which were large rugs. Two stone arcs before them opened to a different area with another set to their right. Pillars that ran from the floor to the ceiling were guided with pots that erupted bark and foliage, sections of white and pink flowers blooming. Above them were wood railings that hinted an accessible second floor that demanded to be searched, although that would have to wait until they did a bit of some bone-grinding and scanned the rest of the first floor. The area was illuminated by a simple, metal chandelier over each table.
It looked too pristine for this to have been deserted. There shouldn’t have been any light and the plants should’ve been dead or wilting. The natural flora that decorated the exterior made sense: natural sunlight and soil all around to collect water would keep the yard well-flourished. The interior, however, either indicated that someone still lived here or there was a magical force keeping this place in good shape.
The option of both existed, but it was one that they wished wouldn’t be the case.
Bone-grinding, right! They only needed a reasonable amount of bone meal, so a couple of thigh bones would have to make do. The broken pieces they could keep in a pouch, and the pieces that were too big could be broken into smaller chunks. Audible snaps echoed throughout the room as they gathered them all into their backpack. Before they would go left of the entrance – from the bits they saw, it looked of a kitchen – Micah’s eyes wandered onto the still form of the fleshier Lost One.
The eye sockets no longer held the blue glow that constituted the differences, outside of having more structure than just bones, between them and Fleshless Lost Ones. The Fleshless type confused them, as they had no tendons or muscles to move, but hey, magic was like that. In any case, on the ground it remained. Hollow, void of both life and magic. Officially dead. Rest in pieces.
These animated corpses were practically immortal; they did not require sleep or food, but at the cost of them attacking the living indiscriminately. What drove them to be aggressive? What parts of their minds remained active while others were dormant or dead? What distinguished them from being neither alive nor dead?
Why did these things make them feel… Off?
Shaking the thoughts out of their head, Micah makes their way to the kitchen. Color them shocked to find another dining table and the fireplace brightly glowing reds and oranges. It wasn’t nearly as illuminated as the main hallway, but it held some charm to it.
Definitely could not have been deserted.
The barred door off to the left grabbed their attention. More of a bright, slightly blue light completely shined, showing off a desk at the end and a staircase downwards. None of the walls indicated any levers or switches, but the bottom of the door was not stuck in the ground. There was a way to get through, but not on this side.
Continuing to inspect the room, they found nothing but mostly-cleared shelves and empty wine bottles. A couple of paintings sat on its side, stacked and leaning against one of the displays. Still, there was basically nothing in this room.
“So much for that,” Micah commented before strolling off. Nothing remained of the first floor that wasn’t examined, they even went as far as to dig a bit into the potted plants for any hidden trinkets or treasures. They’ll have to clean the dirt out of their gauntlets later.
The landing between the first and second floor held nothing of value. There were books, but searching every book would get tiring and fast. Tharaêl would’ve met up with them by the time they finished up, but then again, who knows what he’s dealing with.
Gods, they’re worried. Waiting would keep them stir-crazed, so they went ahead and marched around the railings. There was a pile of scrolls on one of the shelves, one of Boon and Water Breathing appealing enough to snatch and stash. Again, nothing really of note… Except for two things.
Down south on the opposite of the entrance stood two imposing hallways that ended with wooden barred doors, if their eyes were able to see that correctly from the far end of each. Their grip on Warnick tightened as they kept out of sight of the right hallway, pulling a small bit of spine from their bone pouch. The fragment was the right size and weight of a small rock. Micah tossed the bit down the hall, hiding once they finished their swing and peeking over the side.
The stomping of another Lost One followed once the chunk reached closer to the door, the figure slugging along and stopping in the hallway.
Great, another one, and here they thought the noise they made before would lure any of the others out.
Holding their breath, Micah’s eyes stayed on the Lost One. After several seconds, it finally hovered back over to a hidden room their eyes could not catch. They couldn’t count on there only being one, but they figured if there was more, the others would’ve inspected the other end closer to them. Lost Ones had some form intelligence, but they weren’t insusceptible to sneak attacks.
Taking another small piece – they swear they’ll pick these back up later – they tossed the chunk at the same spot and attempted to sneak to the other hallway. Hearing the stomping return, but only further away once they met the entry of the hidden room, they slowly made their way across and around the table that had been in the middle. The creature didn’t turn around once. They winded Warnick up and slammed him directly into the top of the spine, just a bit below the neck. Another body on the ground with a satisfying thunk.
A much needed breath was sharply exhaled. Sneaking wasn’t their thing; it was so anxiety-inducing to base a chance off of shadowed precision. It’s why they weren’t an archer or an assassin. The amount of tension in their chest was enough to cause them to implode, and their shoulders took too long to relax. Having to clench their jaw that tight was not good for their facial muscles, so why did they bother doing that?
It’s probably because of him. Tharaêl was quick and stuck to the darkness like a second skin, and was able to aim rather well. He contrasts to their fighting style, which was upfront, unrelenting force. Despite his commentary on having to adjust his strategies, it seemed they’ve adapted some tactics from him.
At any rate, they have a castle to explore.
The small room they were in had a corner of paintings. Perhaps this was once a study, or a room where they shoved a random assortment of items into. Either seemed plausible.
Micah found some flour sacks. Okay, not the most revolutionary discovery, but flour was important. A separate pouch for a separate ingredient, and now, the door!
They glanced the brass handle. There seemed to be a keyhole, but maybe this one would be unlocked. Maybe the next room had riches and treasures they could sell of to one of the vendors in Ark, and they could keep their coins balanced!
A tug on the handle and the door doesn’t budge. And another. And another.
They scoffed and groaned. Of course it was locked, and of course they haven’t found the key yet, even though they’ve practically noted every single detail. There was still a chance the other door was unlocked, so they trudged back through the painting room and into the other hallway.
Again, they tug at the metal handle. Nothing.
Micah stepped back, eyes squinting at the damned wooden door and debated for a second if Warnick would make better work than them. “You want a fucking key, and yet you give me none. Look, I’m going to come back, but if I return with no key in my hands, I’m tearing you and your establishment down, boyo.”
Micah declared that with absolute certainty, the door would see to it, and began backtracking their path, inspecting the main area once more. Painting room held nothing, nor did the plated Lost One. Hallways, zilch. Bookcases and shelves, nada. The littered bones definitely had no such key.
Another groan.
They stood between the two dining tables, hands waved out and hovering with curled fingers. “Where the FUCK is the key?!”
“Micah,” A familiar voice called from the fire-lit room. They scrammed up and over to hear the metallic groan of a gate, stopping to see the barred door lift as their friend Tharaêl – yeah, friend, and definitely just that – walk through with a key in hand.
Jackpot!
“Wasn’t too rough,” Micah asked with a grin, “was it?”
“Not particularly. The only trouble was more Lost Ones, though considering the condition of the castle, I’d be more surprised if there wasn’t any at all.” He strolled over, offering them the key. “I searched for anything that would be of use and found this.”
Micah took the key, the smile growing wider by the second. Had they been on their own, who knows how much longer exploring around for a key would take, if they didn’t try breaking the door down with their warhammer. Not to mention that the company vastly improved the experience, and if they had been honest, they wouldn’t have asked anyone else to accompany them when they had someone as resourceful and perceptive as Tharaêl.
“I might just kiss you,” they mumbled, not really aware that they had actually voiced their relief.
“I don’t see how necessary that would be over finding a key, but I take it you know what that unlocks.”
The realization washed over their face with a light shade of pink. Good going jackass, they thought. Micah can’t look him in the face, not after that embarrassing comment, so they turned around and nodded. “Y-Yeah, there’s a door to the end of the hall on the second floor. This is probably the one that’ll open it, but if not… I guess we’ll have to keep looking, right?”
“Guess so.”
The atmosphere was awkward, at least it felt that way to Micah. They know that they have a problem with speaking at inopportune times; if their father of all people couldn’t get them to shut up, then really, who could? They might be able to blame their lack of a filter on being tired and/or giddy from finding a new location to explore, or maybe they really have no excuse and are trying to find loopholes in order to avoid the awkward truth.
Nevermind the blunder – they had a castle to search, and it wasn’t going to search itself.

I got slam dunked into a basket of emotions and wanted to do that Tumblr thing that’s been going around! (I still have a difficult time navigating this site on desktop/mobile and opted for a caveman format that is bound to get broken by Tumblr’s interface)
🌺💜🌷 Send this to ten other blogs you think are wonderful. Keep the game going. 🌷💜🌺🌸💐 Here we go!
@marmotish I’m glad I followed you because you’re a talented artist and have a warm, loving heart that you share with us 🌸 It’s the absolute truth when I say that I admire you and was shocked when this humble blog got followed back a few months ago. Freyja has been one of my favorite MCs to see since I started following the HPHM fandom! Then that drawing with Diego and Leigh happened... my heart stopped operating.
@hannahsecretchamber It wasn’t very often that I would get tagged on stuff but when I was, the first thought that usually came to mind was: “AW H*CK. WHO DID I PISS OF THIS TIME!?!?” T’was you. You have contributed hilarious art and fun, thoughtful challenges for us! A true gift to the fandom!
@wilhelminafujita *tears up* 💦 Amazing and highly entertaining commentary and I anxiously look forward to your posts. Absolute wordsmith! Thank you for your creative content and for boarding this Diego-appreciation train wreck. Here’s a compilation of my favorite tags from you:
@no53472 LITTLE GREEN DANGER NOODLE!! 🐍 Those vivid tags of yours gets me so excited and I love when you pop up on my dash with such a wide arrangement of fanart (Taldeea rarepair, crackships, a-angst...) You’ve been one of my earliest followers so thank you for your continued support!
@phyl-the-ravenclaw I love your ideas when it comes to integrating Chinese culture with parts of the Wizarding World! The whole concept of a Chinese school retaining a lot of its traditional roots has been so interesting to see develop. Since JKR didn’t want to bother with Asia, everything you write about it is now accepted as canon.
@ravenclaw-craftsgirl You were like, the first person to message me when I started this blog. Thank you for being on the same wavelength as my shitty sense of humor! (:3 _ )=
@jadeowl19 The Corelious kids are so well written and developed? Seriously, they’re very interesting characters and I can’t wait to learn more about them as the game’s story progresses!
@neonbluewaves NEON IS SUCH A QUEEN!! Also, this piece right here?? Hell yeah! 💯😩👌
@flannerycake (... wh-when will Flan return from the war?) Your art style is so vibrant and adorable! 💖
Admittedly this is a cop out from deciding on a 10th person but most importantly: @you! Thank you for your support with likes, reblogs, or just plain old scrolling past whatever shitty content I throw at the wall and hope sticks.
Sorry, I’ve always been the type of creep who watches her mutuals/idols from the shadows of a second story window and catcalls leaves words of encouragement in the tags.
I’m doing my best to engage others and reply in a timely manner, but I’ve got a full-time job and a side job that pops up whenever the heck. (I’m not proud to admit that I’m a workaholic.) 💸💸
This lizardwoman’s hours of freedom are pretty limited so please be patient as I pathetically crawl out of my comfort zone and attempt to be active in the fandom. (ง •̀ω•́)ง✧
