#nonbinary lead

Hi! I'm polishing up this book and I wanted to get some more eyes on it. Feeling really good about how tight the plot is. The book has a diverse cast and a Nonbinary lead, with strong LGBT characters, disability and neurodivergency, found-family, all to a back-drop of super-powered teens just trying to survive.

Looking for a focus on the story and characters, seeking out plot holes as this is a mystery with a lot of "threads." There's three main POV characters, (William, Iszeldier, and Caelan) and the villain's POV (Jules), with a minor villain's POV toward the end. I'm notorious for head-hopping so I'd like a reader who can keep an eye out for that. I'm not seeking in-depth editing, so only feel the need to point out typos or weird sentence structure if it's really bothering you.

i led bible study at the psych institute i was in for the three months and i was blessed by the experience.

i was harassed for being "mormon" on an occassion by a few, but handled it well and kept the meeting on track. and being an open latter day saint kept some people away (i was informed by my 2nd roommate who was christian and a seminary student. she invited people to come at the sunday church service/stream bc she really enjoyed the bible study but was told by a client it was bc of the "mormon girl" leading it that they didn't go ). being an open lesbian probably played a role too.

but those whose hearts were open enough to come anyway said they appreciated the fellowship and support. we were usually a small group, but often quoted was Matthew 18:20 "For where there are two or three gathered in my name name, I am there among them."

often i was put in a position to teach by client request. bc many who came were new chrisitians or those who had attended church but never studied the Bible before, just listened to what their pastor said without studying the sacred text directly.

not what i expected to do but i did my best with the what i learned from my experience and my seminary classes and made sure to question after what their independent thoughts were on the scripture after reading it and after providing historical/cultural/societal context for the text.

i used the community of christ lessons/sermon helps to assist me. but made it more general so it would be more applicable to sola scriptura (bible only) christians or non latter day saints, reorganized or otherwise (no BoM or D&C).

i passed it on to my roommate to take it over. she is a kind, compassionate woman, so i hope more people come. she's well studied, devout, and also straight, nondenominational and sola scriptura so i hope more people are comfortable with her.

the conversations i had will stick with me for a long time. i learned a lot from other clients who came.

"The Smee twins don't want to be boys anymore." 

Mal blinks. The parenting books didn't prepare her for this one. "Uh. Sure. Do they want to be girls?" 

Carlos shrugs. For some unfathomable reason, the Smee twins have decided that Carlos is the most trustworthy adult in the house, and have consequently decided that they're only going to talk to him when they need something. It keeps things nice and quiet, but it's also weird that they picked the guy who spends most of his free time researching better ways to make explosions as their singular safe adult. "Dunno. They didn't exactly say, so I figure probably not. Do we have books on this shit?" 

They have books on everything from feeding toddlers (thankfully not applicable - the Smee twins are old enough that they're willing to eat anything, and Celia and Dizzy haven't managed to procreate yet) to managing runaway teenagers, but they don't have any books on what to do when your sort-of-adoptive kids decide that they don't want to be boys anymore. "No." 

"Figures. Can we get some?"

"If you can figure out what books cover it, I'll misappropriate treasury funds to buy 'em," Mal decides. It might not even count as misappropriation if she can get Evie to write up a little blurb justifying the expense as part of the isle kid program. They got Celia and Dizzy's cell phones with official treasury funds. The magic that Evie's email connections can work is basically infallible at this point. "Do they want to cut their hair or anything?" 

"I didn't ask. There were a lot of tears." 

Mal winces. "Did you try and comfort them, or something?" 

Carlos's face is what she can only assume is a pained reflection of her own. "Yeah. But it didn't really work, so I just told them that they don't have to be boys anymore, and then I got them set up with chocolate milk." 

Chocolate milk is the ultimate comfort food. It's also the only way that any of their newest VKs will drink milk, which is proving both expensive in the finances department (Evie) and adventurous in the cereal department (primarily Jay). 

"Yeah, that's fine," Mal decides. If they're not actively wailing, everything is probably fine. "Do they want, like, to paint their room a different color?" 

"Crying," Carlos reminds her, like it's a complete explanation. "Didn't ask." 

"I can't ask them, they'll cry if I look at them wrong," Mal says, in a very measured and calm sort of tone. "Go back and ask if they want to paint the room, or cut their hair, or something." 

Carlos casts his most baleful look up at her. He really has to work for it too, because the universe is deeply unfair, and he's taller than she is now. "Crying." 

"Don't be a wimp." 

He groans. "I'm too young to be a single parent. You're aging me prematurely. Every time I do things like this I can feel my brain cells maturing." 

"Shut the fuck up and go talk to your kids."

every so often i feel the need to remind everyone that when we say queerness is nonconforming, that also means it is nonconforming to pervasive modern ideas of queerness, not just to traditional conservative values.

in fact, if you are someone who regularly interacts with online queer media/communities, there is a good chance you have been given the impression, directly or indirectly, that the way you experience queerness is incorrect compared to the queerness of others.

but the fact is, you are not “supposed” to experience your gender or sexuality any one specific way for it to be a “valid” queer identity. we may culturally ascribe words and connotations to certain shared experiences, but it is impossible to ever cleanly categorize human identity like that. labels are not rule books, they are community building tools. unfortunately, within our own community we create standards that entirely counter our initial intent to support one another; do not let yourself get caught up in them.

you do not need to look more androgynous or use they/them pronouns to “really be nonbinary” if you won’t WANT that. you do not have to date both genders to “really be bisexual”. you don’t even have to call yourself bisexual even if you “technically fit the definition”. you don’t have to medically transition to “really be trans”. do not perform a false self to “prove” yourself to other queer people. existing as you are within queer spaces is just as important as existing as you are in the broader culture.

it is a scifi comedyhorror (horrorcomedy?) about an evil science company in space (think aperture but in space for basic setup: weird dangerous scifi with little care for employee life) and the ai who supervises it! thats sayer give it up for sayerrrrr "petty vengeful antique" seraphimagent8 everyone cheer & clap for its broadcasts or else

each season kind of mixes it up a bit, with 1 being a 2nd person pov story about waking up as an aerolith employee (im obsessed with the pov guy.) with no memories, 2-3 being a monster of the week sort of thing leading to a greater plot that s4+6 go into detail about, and s5 is a prequel story.

various themes: death as an inherent flipside of growth. Identity and the ship of theseus. the worst people you know having the worst arguments possible. if you upgrade your phone youre MURDERING your old phone and its FREAKING OUT and it wants you DEADDDD. what if the most 🥺 man in space was there.
