HOT TAKE : Makarov was a bad father (and a bad grandfather)

I'm expecting a big wave of hate with this one... BUT LET ME EXPLAIN

We can dive into the generational trauma theory : we know Yuri has been profoundly hurt by his wife's death (giving birth to Makarov) and this is a thing we should consider. In most cases, people live with the burden of the death of their partner until they die, which could have been Yuri's case. And the idea that somehow his wife died for his son... Well, angst potential.

Now : death of a loved one + wife who dies giving birth to his son = difficult father-son relationship

And even if Yuri didn't do it intentionally, there could have been a distance between the father and the son, and it has repercussions on the futur.

So yes, it maybe happened completely differently, but let's consider this hypothesis to understand what comes after :

Makarov was raised in the guild, where everybody is friendly. The only thing is his daddy issues. He ends up considering the guild more important, so the thing to cherish and protect at all cost.

Everything is fine.

Then, Ivan enters the game.

I know it's very fun to have an antagonist in the family of the master, the man presented as the most loving, a father for all the lost children, etc. BUT maybe we can go a little deeper.

We sometimes have this idea that some characters are born meaner than others, it allows us to ignore psychology and sociology, but it's not fun.

We can suppose Ivan was born in the guild, like Makarov and certainly Laxus. And as it's shown every single second that Fairy Tail is a very healthy environment, a "big family", so even if Ivan was a bit twisted, he would not have been so mean with his colleagues, provoking his exclusion, and he would have not tried to destroy the guild.

Unless he have daddy issues too. Let's consider : Makarov has a son and the mother is nowhere to be found. Doesn't it remind you of something ? But Makarov know his relationship with his father wasn't awesome, so he tries differently.

So two possibilities can be explored :

1- Ivan is a spoiled child. Being the master's son allows him to do reprehensible things and not be punished after, or not too much, and Makarov wants to give him all the freedom he didn't have. Until he almost kills another member of the guild. Then Makarov is forced to expel him. He takes away the thing that gave Ivan an almost unlimited power, and he doesn't like it. So if he can't have Fairy Tail, nobody will.

2- Makarov prefers the guild to his son. He doesn't know how to raise a kid, what if he screws like his father ? (Spoiler : he does) So when Precht makes him the new master, he puts all his soul into his job. But Ivan wants a father. So he does everything to make his father notice him, to make his father proud. It leads him to dark places, and thus, being strong = being good enough. Unfortunately, it doesn't work, because he ends up expelled. So, by pure rage, he decides to destroy the thing his father loved more than him. (It's my favorite version)

In both cases, Ivan manipulates his son into believing that being strong is the only way for him to be respected, to be seen.

Which leads us to the Laxus part (finally)

It's canon that Ivan pushed his son to be the strongest (to the point he put a lacrima in his body) so yeah, Laxus has daddy issues. But he has gampa issues too.

Let's continue with the theory we built on this post : Makarov doesn't really raise his son, why would he raise his grandson ?

But we see Makarov taking care of a very young Laxus. Thus, Laxus once loved his grandfather. Except Ivan didn't. So we can suppose he decided to keep his son under his control by manipulating him into thinking he has to be the strongest.

Then Ivan was banned.

The problem with an abusive relationship is that the victim thinks the abuser is on the right, which explains why Laxus was all but happy his father was expelled. But he stayed in Fairy Tail, because despite everything, Fairy Tail is his home. But this home is controlled by the man who banned his father (his abuser)

Laxus becomes a rank-S mage, which means he's the strongest. He has all the rights to make Fairy Tail his home, not Makarov's.

Well yes, but no.

Because there's Mirajane, a prodigy so fucking strong she becomes a rank-S mage too. But Lisanna dies, and suddenly everybody loves Mirajane. She even becomes the right arm of Makarov, because she's too weak now to create problems now.

And there's Natsu and Gray, Makarov's little boys. They're noisy, annoying, but they have potential. They have the potential to become stronger than Laxus. And Makarov loves them.

But more important, because there's Erza, who is so strong, so kind, so nice... Who is his grandfather's favorite. The same grandfather who did nothing when Ivan imprisoned Laxus into a psychological jail and who banned Ivan for somebody else's weakness. And Laxus knows it : she is the future master of Fairy Tail. She will steal his home and make it even weaker.

So he has to take Fairy Tail now, even if his grandfather dies in the process. Better, it will make things easier !

But in the end, Laxus loves Fairy Tail. He loves the guild enough to not betray everybody by joining his father's guild.

Laxus broke the cycle. And I don't think it was thanks to Makarov. If Laxus broke the cycle, it's because despite everything, he has weirdos to stick with. The Raijinshuu are a safe place for Laxus, they are strong enough to be his friends colleagues, they don't call him "psychotic" when he tells them he wants the guild, and more important, they care for him.

Laxus broke the cycle thanks to people who cared for him. They even wanted to follow him when he was banned ! But he said no, because he care for them and he knows they will be better in Fairy Tail.

Now, let's consider : travelling must have felt like therapy for Laxus : he's not part of Fairy Tail anymore and he's sure he will never have the possibility to come back, but he will not join his father because he doesn't want to put his friends in danger. So he has to do something by himself, not under the influence of his father. And I believe this emancipation was beneficial for him. He could learn what it means to be himself, not Ivan's son or Makarov's grandson.

I don't think he fully forgave Makarov for his inaction and for loving other more than him, and he's not completely out of Ivan's philosophy, those things need time, but he escaped the cycle.

General Relationship Headcanons with Erza + Juvia + Mirajane v❦

Erza <3

Usually in a relationship theres always one person whose mostly in control

and yeah that'll be Erza for sure

She isn't exactly...controlling she just has to make sure at every second of every minute of every hour your safe

So this means she's gonna be walking behind you at most points (Gotta make sure theres no sneak attacks)

To the average person it may seem a little drastic but no this a normal occurrence

An average date is usually and sadly just hanging out in the guild hall splitting any kind of desert that's served that evening

Sadly because you both don't get a moment of peace with the normal shenanigans that happen (by shenanigans I mean Natsu and Grey)

It's hard to go out on normal dates because Erza, as much as she loves you, is the guilds rock and has to always make sure that everything is alright and no ones on fire

When you both do get the time, you love late afternoon picnics

Several desserts and treats

Erza loves how much you love picnics and when you first brought up the little date idea she was already planning your wedding

You and her chat and talk while splitting your favorite foods and treats.

When it gets darker outside she'll put her arm around you and rest her head on your shoulder

This usually ends up with you both falling asleep outside in the cold.

She'll invite you out for cafe dates and shopping trips

No matter what you say she's always gonna pay for you

surprisingly you both don't go out much on dates

she usually invites you over to her house where she'll prepare dinner and have the both of you bake cookies

sometimes you both end up messy in egg yolk and baking powder

when lissanna and elfman are home she'll lovingly (yeah thats the word for it) kick them out so you both can spend some quality time together

mira loves cuddling

she loves when you can rest your head on her lap or her stomach and you both fall asleep holding each other

you just might be the reason mira's addicted to napping

a really comforting activity your both addicted to now is bubble baths with each other

its never really a sexual thing, more like two adults just floating around a hot tub

you both light a couple candles and bring a couple of books into the bath, and you chat for hours

you end up talking more then you end up cleaning yourself

you talk about the latest gossip like natsu and lucy getting together and all the other romance taking place in the guildhall

you've both non-verbally agreed that bubble baths are your thing and if you end up in the tub by yourself your doing something wrong

Dating Mira

Headcanons and Stuff:

--> Queen of cuddles - this one is such a given but I have expansions. She insists on being the little spoon 99.9% of the time, but she isn't emotionally immature. If she sees that you're having a rough day, she will switch it up and hold you as the little spoon. She will mumble sweet words but you don't follow on to what she's saying.

--> Matching PJs - expansion number one. Those matching pjs with Hello Kitty and Spiderman? Yeah, she's that type of girlfriend. You must match. When it's seasonal, you must match...festively. She will turn it into a shopping trip around Magnolia, and if you don't agree to go, then Lisanna is getting roped in and they will make the decisions without you.

--> Seasonal blankets - expansion number two. Halloween? Pumpkin blanket. Christmas? Snowflake blanket. Valentine's Day? Heart blanket. Taco Tuesday? Burrito blanket. She's set. Imagine moving in together and a whole cupboard is just rolled up blankets.

--> Making her laugh creates this feeling of flying - Mira is quite reserved in her laugh, but it's when you can crack a few truly awful jokes that you will hear the real thing come out. And it's so soft, real, and care-free.

--> Comfort food queen - she knows exactly what you need especially if your mood isn't where it usually is. In winter, her culinary creations really hit the spot, keeping you warm in the soul.

--> She's terrifying when angry - again, a given. This is very particular in response to you, her siblings, or the guild. It took a lot to overcome a lot of that young rage, but it will slip up and come out. She is just a girl 🎀

--> Show her it's okay to be vulnerable - hear me out here. I think Mira often depicts that she is very approachable and soft, but she's an elder sister. She's the oldest sister. She's got a lot of weight on her shoulders even if she doesn't show it as much. Let her feel like she can truly be herself. Plan dates, surprise her, show her that you can do things without being asked to do it first. Taking the initiative will make all the difference in how she will rely on you.

--> She will leave sticky notes on mirrors - she will leave small affirmations on pieces of paper to surprise you around the house or guildhall. She also strikes me as the type of person to write inspirational quotes on cute paper for her kids' lunches.

--> Never remind her of her emo era - the past is in the past. Find any old photo and tease her with it and be prepared to be chased down the street. Good luck soldier. 🫡

decided to do the @fairytail-redraw for feb 25!

do wish i had of done my girl mira more justice than this but alas i am sleepy and february is nearly over so i'm calling it done for now :/

not hugely comfy with this pallet tbh, i prefer brighter happy colours and minimal shadows so it was good practice i think! also literally nobody flip this, it was so wonky i had to add layer from canvas and use the liquidify brush in a last ditch attempt to fix it

A few more baby fairytail headcanons because their the found family that haunts me in my dreams🫶🏽 these are a little more natsu and gray centric cause those are my favs

Gray and Natsu did not have a place to live until they were in the guild for like a year . There were too many parentless orphans running around and not enough people to keep track of them, so It was couch surfing hot potato like nobody’s business.

Natsu’s stuff was scattered to the high heavens. You would find his sandals in Laxus’s room, bag in the Strauss Siblings place,any clothes were scattered between Erza, Cana and Levy. Really its a miracle he had clothes at all considering the fact he also refused to wear a shirt his first month( “you don’t needs shirts in the forest snd their itchhhyyy” ) . Gray was a bit better and just had a card board box that he took to people’s house when he decided (without the person’s permission) to crash there for the next week. Ironically,The two would always end up trying to crash with the same person on the same night. Natsu would be climbing into the room through the window right when Gray was breaking in by picking the lock.

Speaking of which, Everyone but erza can pick locks. Lissana is the fastest followed by Cana and then Natsu. Mira just broke the door down.

Whenever they were smaller and Erza went on a job with Levy they had an unspoken understanding to only speak like they were from medieval times. There were alot of questions afterward and more lost in translation.

Little Cana would cut and dye everyone’s hair. She Once dyed natsu’s hair black, mistaking the hair dye as extra shampoo-y shampoo

That was the worst week of Natsu and Grays life. Whenever they were out in public together they got mistaken for brothers.

”WHAT DO YOU MEAN BROTHERS?! HES A BROODING EMO STRIPPER! WE DON’T LOOK ANYTHING CLOSE TO RELATED. ”

*cana and laxus dying of laughter*

“BROTHERS?! BROTHERS?!?? ARE YOU BLIND HIS FACE IS FREAKY! FREAKY ! AND LOOKS COMPLETELY STUPID, HOW COULD YOU THINK THAT ME AND THAT THING SHARED ANYTHING?!?!”

natsu and gray couldn’t look at each other that entire week.

EmoTeen!Gray discovered the girls taste in books after being locked in the library closet during “book club”

Natsu knows exactly what Erza and Levy read. super hearing y’know? He wont admit to it but he knows not to be in the guild whenever those high pitched giggle start.

Laxus gets severely motion sick. He used to deal with it by using those stupid looking motion sickness glasses every time he got on a train. Now he just sells his soul to the devil (mira) for a bottle of magic elixir ( straight vodka) that lets him pass tf out.

Erza lost an Erza look alike contest once

Mira lost a Mira look alike contest

Lissana won both of them back to back

Natsu has a collection of hand me downs that he refuses to wear or get rid of. Most of them are Erzas old armors or things gray stripped and forgot about, but he has a little of everyone. His favorite one is Laxus’s old big coat.

Elfman does a little quote of the day thing in the guildhall

Elfman once got all the fairytail kids including s-class Laxus, Erza, and Mira to Jump Guildarts. No one knows the outcome because at some point all the smaller kids got knocked out with only Erza,Mira and Laxus left awake and they wont tell who won.

When they were younger there was a cute skate park the girls would visit often, thats why they can do all the cool skate board tricks.

Levy bought a motorcycle after getting the money from her first “big” job

Natsu once put a tin full of mentos in multiple buckets of coke in the guild hall infirmary

One time gramps was feeling really down and kids did a little play to cheer him up. They did sleeping beauty with Levy as Sleeping Beauty, Cana as the prince, Mira was maleficent, and Laxus as the prince’s horse. Gray, Natsu, and Elfman were obviously the fairies. Erza wasn’t in the guild at the moment much to her dismay. The play genuinely went incredibly well except instead of waking the princess up with a kiss, Cana head butted Levy so hard it caused Levy to pass out.

Little Valentines Day scenario

(No i do not care that its may)

The first year they were all together, Natsu and Gray got in trouble with Erza the day before valentine’s day. Them hearing everyone gush about wanting someone to give them something, decided that the best way to apologize (save themselves) would be to give her a bunch of valentines day candy and presents. They gave them to her at the guild with cute cards and she was so so happy she started to tear up. This marks Erza as the first person among them all to get a Valentine present.

The others were silently seething, which turned into alot of teasing “ Aww looks like Grays got a crushhh,” “ Look at natsu being all gentlemen like , Erza must be a special special girl,” Erza promptly beat them all up for it, and Gray and Natsu were successfully in their mission to save themselves!

They did feel kinda bad afterwards seeing the others look longingly at Erza quite large pile. Natsu sneakily went out and bought some more chocolates to hand cheer everyone up, gray joined in because “No way am I letting flame brain be liked more then me!” They obviously fought, which melted the chocolates. No fear however! Natsu tempered the chocolates to perfection and gray used his magic to make fun molds.

The next day they handed them out and now its a tradition. On Valentine’s day you get candy from the boy of your dreams, the next day Natsu and Gray give you a creepily detailed mini you made out of chocolate.
