Defeating Tr*mp and the Republican party: how you can help
So as you've probably heard, there is a presidential election coming up in the US this November. You may even be experiencing some concern about the outcome of that election -- given both the high stakes and the active efforts by Republicans to suppress the vote -- and wondering what more you can do to stave off the possibility of a literal fascist takeover of the United States.
The good news is: you're not helpless. There are wonderful organizations out there -- staffed by knowledgeable, talented people with their feet already on the ground -- and they could use your help.
Here are a few of them:
VoteBeat offers deeply-researched local reporting about elections, which is both valuable and rare in the current news environment. A spinoff of ChalkBeat, it was founded and is run by journalists from ProPublica.
Spread the Vote is an organization that works on the ground to help every eligible voter secure the documentation and the access they need to make their voices heard. In particular, StV runs a program called Vote by Mail in Jail to help ensure that incarcerated persons also have access to these rights.
VoteRiders, like StV, works to ensure that every American has the opportunity to vote. In particular, they provide financial and practical support to trans people so that they can get hold of the documentation they need and can vote safely and confidently.
FairVote advocates for ranked-choice voting, a system in wide use outside the US which far more effectively captures the will of the electorate. (we don't have an individual feature page for them, but FV was one of FTH's supported orgs in 2020.)
(This is just a short starter list of amazing organizations, pulled from FTH's supported orgs list in past years; there are plenty of others. Please feel free to add them in reblogs!)
Ways you can help
Donate to one (or more!) of these organizations. These are all fairly small operations, even if their goals and their impact is large; they could use the help!
Volunteer your time. Many of these organizations rely on volunteers to make their day-to-day operations work. Sometimes it's necessary to do this volunteering in person, but often there is a remote option for volunteering if that's what works for you.
Run a fanworks auction to raise money. FTH recently rolled out a full and detailed playbook, sharing all of our organizational materials and step-by-step guides for how to use them and adapt them to your needs. This is a great moment to put that to work! Whether you want to raise money for one of the organizations listed above, or for some other nonprofit, or even for a progressive local candidate that could use the support (FTH doesn't do individual candidates, but you shouldn't let that stop you!) you can make a real difference while also helping to put more fanworks into the world.

ArwaMachine 2022 Fanfic
I wrote/posted what felt like a metric fuckton (scientific verbiage) of fic this year, just in terms of word count. Here be the dragons:
Indefinite Lines
Tumblr media
I might be cheating here, because I wrote this in 2020-21 and started posting it at the end of 2021, but the vast majority of this fic posted in 2022. This fic is essentially my Season 5 that manages to fix everything while still being canon compliant and introduces everyone to BAMF!Rosie, who is the best person ever.
It also came with Bonus Material!
--
Hypotheticals
Tumblr media
A sweet, fluffy little fic I wrote for Silvergirl's birthday collection ❤️ Insecure!Sherlock + Patient/Loving!John...a wonderful combination!
--
Matchmaking for Solitary Animals
Tumblr media
FTH fic #1. John is determined to find Sherlock a boyfriend. This plan is a terrible plan.
--
Monsters in the Woods
Tumblr media
FTH fic #2. A 80s slasher fic/summer camp AU that I love SO MUCH.
--
Welcome Distractions
Tumblr media
Phone sex. Then actual sex. Need I say more?

Specifics:
Best/worst title?
Best: You and I Kaleide, Hear My Cry, Like the Wind, RE-ROLL, & grab your things, I've come to take you home
Worst: See Through, One Dance
I think a lot of the titles were uninspired this year, but those two are the least aesthetically pleasing to me.
Best/worst quote/passage?
Best:
Brighter, richer, a window opening to a world Prompto has never known, a dimension unfolding before him. He is experiencing something for which he has no name, has no language and no words and can’t describe. It isn’t just the visual phenomenon. It is the way his heart, too, is opening. As easily and as freely as a door swinging wide.
The simplest explanation, which is no real explanation, is colour.
And the colour is blue.
And the world is breaking apart, fracturing and wheeling and turning in a glorious, shining ballet. Yet Prince Noctis’s face somehow remains the same, an anchor and a harbour and a refuge. There are new colours in his face and colours in his hair and colour dancing around him which he’ll only later know how to name, peach and pink and black and grey and blue, more blue; pure, vast blue of sky.
(You and I Kaleide)
Why?: Writing the descriptions of the magical kaleidoscope moment in this fic gave me the opportunity to be very creative and artsy. Honestly, I probably could've pushed it even further than I did. But I think this is the fic with the most unique visuals this year.
Best/worst first line?
Best: Caleb knows he’s smart, but he would need a major in psychology with double minors in tiefling and carnie to figure out why Mollymauk pays him as much attention as he does. (Why Do You Like Me?) Why?: Most of my first lines are pretty serviceable. This one is actually clever.
Worst: “H-hello?” (The Wanderer) Why?: Conveying emotion through adding a letter to indicate a stutter is a bit of a cop out. The runner up to this is "“We need a miracle,” Ignis muttered." (See Through) because I feel like that's a cliché thing to say.
Best/worst last line?
Best: Cradled by the arms of his living friend, who time had returned to him, he finally fell asleep. (RE-ROLL) Why?: None of the last lines from this year really stood out to me, but this one is definitely the most interesting.
Worst: Then they dashed out of the alleyway and back into the fray. (The Spark And The Storm) Why?: My last lines tend to have at least some emotion in them. This line doesn't really have any. It's pretty weak.
General questions:
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
I wrote way more than I expected. I would never just expect to write 150K, aha. I especially didn't expect to write one fic a day for a week (which is what I did for No. 6 week), nor did I expect to write a novel-length longfic, which is what Long Shadows turned out to be.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
Last year I didn't know I'd get into the Witcher games or the Mighty Nein in 2023. I already had a vague interest in the Gerlion/Geraskier ship, but I didn't know I was going to start actually engaging in the fandom beyond having read one novel. And I've always had a vague awareness of Critical Role thanks to my other mutuals, but never had the intent to get into the fandom myself. That one happened, I think, because I got a chance to play my first game of DND this summer, and got interested in other DND stuff in consequence.
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
As always, it's a bit of a toss-up, but I think Long Shadows fucking rocks. I can't wait to share it with everyone. The Bridge, You and I Kaleide, and RE-ROLL are all really good too.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
You and I Kaleide is my most popular by hits. The Bridge is my most popular by kudos. (Both in the FFXV fandom.)
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
It's kinda sucky to roll up to the Critical Role fandom like five years too late, especially with such an investment in Widomauk. The CritRole fandom also doesn't seem to comment much, and never really seems to have done so, which is a shame. But I feel like people do like my stories, even if they're not very vocal about it. ;3;
Story that could have been better?
All of my No. 6 week fics were made via writing sprint, so they're not necessarily the best thought out stories I've ever written. I think they're pretty good for what they are, though.
Sexiest story?
Long Shadows /eyes emoji
You can look forward to TWO sexy scenes in that one~
Saddest story?
The Bridge and Sleeping Bastard have some sad moments. RE-ROLL is kinda about a twenty three hour long panic attack, lol. And Long Shadows has a VERY angsty opening, woof.
Most fun?
Welcome To The Polycule has the most banter and silly lines in it. It's kinda unavoidable with Homestuck fics, because that's just how the characters talk.
Story with single sweetest moment?
Probably You and I Kaleide, which is just romance all the way down. But you could also make an argument for one of the fics in my Witcher 1 series. (My Only, A Ring For Dandelion, & To Last Your Whole Life Long)
Hardest story to write?
RE-ROLL, You and I Kaleide, and Long Shadows had the greatest effort put into them. I took copious notes on episodes 26 and 27 of the Mighty Nein campaign in order to be able to write RE-ROLL. You and I Kaleide has a pretty complicated structure that it took me a few tries to get right. And Long Shadows is a longfic, so of course it took more planning than just a one-shot. I've already written an author's note explaining my process for it, which will be released when the fic is fully posted.
Easiest/most fun story to write?
The writing sprints for No. 6 week were all pretty easy. Come up with an idea in five to ten minutes, then write for half an hour. Maybe a few minutes more or a second sprint. Done.
Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?
I wrote Why Do You Like Me specifically to explore why Molly would like Caleb. I can see why Caleb would like Molly. Molly's great. But early-campaign Caleb is, well. An anti-social asshole with purposefully poor hygiene who gets reprimanded multiple times for being dishonest and selfish. Yet, there must be something special about him that's obvious to the people around him and not just to the audience, otherwise this ship wouldn't be as popular as it is. The question I had was what, and this fic helped me explore that.
Most overdue story?
See Through was based on an idea I had in like 2018. You and I Kaleide was also a prompt I had sitting around for a while. This is why I hoard all of my good story ideas - I never know when I might bust one out to write it for some gift exchange - or just because!
I also have been saying for many years that I ship KatNepDaveJade, but I never put my money where my mouth is before to actually write the ship.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Lots, actually. You and I Kaleide had a very complicated structure. RE-ROLL used real dice rolls to direct the plot. And Long Shadows starts off with just a huge chunk of unapologetic angst, which is so not my normal wheelhouse. Then there were the writing sprints I just posted. Then The Bridge and Window Of The Soul have premises that are a little risqué, as they deal with themes of suicide and burgeoning sexuality. So yeah, I had a lot of fun flexing my creative muscles this year.
What are your fic writing goals for next year?
EDIT AND POST LONG SHADOWS!!!
Work on one of my currently unfinished fics (Perchance to Wake, OFF-Script, or Fateswap Beyond)
*
That’s all, folks! If anyone else wants to do this wrap up like it’s a meme and tag me, go right ahead. Happy New Year!

3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?
oof, i’d have an easier time ranking them by least favorite. limiting myself to hockey fandom and acknowledging that recency bias likely plays a role here, and also acknowledging that i’m still too deep in post-posting anxiety re your fth fic to really evaluate how i feel about it. but i’d have to either go with that one or made up, which just gave me so much sheer happiness on so many levels.
5. What’s a fic idea you’ve had that you will never write?
back in 2020 when i was just acclimating to hockey fandom i had this idea for a sidgeno post-retirement divorce fic, where sid struggles with retirement, they get divorced, he renovates an entire house in cole harbour, other things. i wrote that pairing exactly once for a fest and found it simply too stressful to ever consider attempting again. slapping this under a cut so as to give you a lil snippet but wow i just opened the doc and there’s a lot more there than i remembered:
Tanger called the night before Sid’s big lunch with Geno, since hockey players were universally the nosiest people Sid had ever known, retired or not.
Sid was at Kent Building Supplies looking at miter saws, which would have been a good excuse for ignoring the call. But it would also be a good excuse for ending the call early if necessary, and he was pretty sure it was going to be necessary.
“Hey, Kris.” He ducked out of the tool aisle. The tool aisles were always busier than the rough plumbing department, with its hundreds of bins of mysterious fittings and tubes. Sid loved rough plumbing.
“You picked up.”
Sid tried not to wince at the tone of surprise there. He talked to Kris pretty often, as far as he knew. “You called me,” Sid said. “What’s up?”
“Not much. What are you up to?”
It was always like playing chicken when someone was calling about Geno — or about Sid, and how Sid was doing in the aftermath of Geno, which was still about Geno in its own way. Who would say it first?
“Looking at PEX fittings.” It wasn’t gonna be Sid, not this time.
Anyway this fic was really just going to be about my extensive knowledge of old home renovation and all those parallels to aging and working on a relationship.
17. What’s something you’ve learned about while doing research for a fic?
oh dude for your fth fic alone there was: horse race schedules, love is blind seasons three and four, who was at shattuck when Nate was also there, EJ’s dog names, traditional foods of finland, what do seaside cafes look like, what is the word for how a barnacle clings to something (sessile), big lakes by Winnipeg, big lakes by Denver, spring leaf out schedules for Denver, average temperature in Anaheim in March, types of seals and how long they can hold their breaths under water, the list goes on and on and on

10.) A character/ship I didn't enjoy/think about as much before you wrote about them
Oh man, you're the one who got me to pause for a long moment and eye Spock and Scotty as a romantic pairing. So, while Seamark is @daraoakwise's fault, you're the reason the thought ever occurred in the first place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
--but also, Dinah/Ollie. Like for all this time, you are the Black Canary for me. LOL!
When @under-the-silk-tree gave me the prompt for the FTH 2020, I was very uncertain if I could write them, and do it justice. But. Sometimes, that kind of challenge is just what I need in my charity writings.
"Spanning the Years" and the follow up of "How Long the Watch" (which you prompted!) are both dear to me for the fact I got to explore other aspects of beloved characters.
And, well, dysfunctional OTP of all time for me is Dinah/Ollie, with ALL the connections of the Arrow Fam in place.

- MASTERLIST -
will include individual fandom lists when this one gets too long :)
fandoms on this list thus far (in no particular order): The Mentalist, Supernatural, Doctor Who, Lie to Me, BBC Merlin, Stargate: Atlantis, BBC Sherlock, Stargate SG1, Leverage
fic-by-fic (oldest to newest) ~
• A Kingdom Beyond the Horizon (ao3 wattpad or fanfiction.net only, wip) - 5k+ words, Merlin/Stargate: Atlantis | It was always only a matter of time before the King of Camelot went on another sorcery-expelling rampage, but no one saw this one coming. No one except for Merlin, the serving boy to the King's son, Prince Arthur.
Among those sorcerers Merlin warns is a woman by the name of Forridel, who lives in the Lower Town. Forridel spreads the message and takes with her a few fellow fugitives as she hastily escapes the kingdom.
If there was but one hideout in which the sorcerers should never have taken refuge, it was the cave in the outskirts of the nearby forest. But what other choice did they have?
• jenny on eternal vacay bc that’s how she is (wattpad only) - 1k+ words, Doctor Who | Jenny aka Generated Anomaly gets the spotlight. Also a Groske, and they’re in London.
- for Writing Workshop 2020
• Johnlock One-Shot* ao3 - 1k+ words, Sherlock | John writes a heartfelt letter to his flatmate, not that he’ll ever send it...
• A Very Jisbon Holiday* | link to post (ao3) - 5k+ words, The Mentalist | A holiday-themed Jisbon one-shot I made for randomfandomtrashblog (Tumblr) for Secret Santa 2022.
If you would like to mostly ignore Red John, then maybe this is for you.
• would you be my little quarantine?* | link to post (ao3) - 5k+ words, Supernatural | To celebrate Dean Winchester's 44th birthday, here is a fic in which Cas is a little sick, Dean ends up a lot sick, and they have difficulty actually communicating with each other. Blatantly Destiel.
#deansbirthdaybash (epilogue wip)
• Sad, sad demise of the Team: Sam and Destiel - about 800 words, Supernatural/Stargate SG1 | Sam and Destiel meet alternate Destiel, then get gate-napped. Can read with no Stargate knowledge.

dreamwidth update: GYWO 2022 and How I Fucked Up
no, this is not the post about job search depression. not yet.
I participate in Get Your Words Out every year as something that motivates me to make words, much like NaNoWriMo -- it isn't necessarily about "winning" either, but it's about having a reason to track words, which then becomes having a reason to write. In 2020 or 2021, I forget which, I managed to write somewhere near 350,000 words. What a fuckin' banger. A lot of it was Old Vines, and some of it was work words, and all of it was fun as hell.
The thing I noticed at the end of the year, however, was that my writing was just inconsistent -- I was carrying myself towards that goal with days where I wrote 5000, 7000 words in one day, and then not writing for the next 4 days in a row. So if I could get my ASS to the COMPUTER to do the THING, i usually could get a significant number of words done. So let's focus on that, sez my brain, and we'll be a super-writer.
2022 Sev said well, hey, there's a habit pledge for GYWO, so: I took it, with the rather extreme idea of writing 240 days out of the year. that's like 4-5 days a week. But hey! It isn't wordcount! Although I still fucking decided I was going to try to write 300,000 words. just 300K. Not 350K. lol. I'm stupid.
Then at the beginning of 2022 I lost my content writing job - more like, they hired someone full-time and let all the contractors go without warning, yes, I'm still mad - and therefore lost one of the major impetus for me actually sitting down at the computer to write. Plus, I'd been counting work words as part of the yearly target -- which I think is fuckin fair when you write for a living, yeah?, so.
And then as I realized other work had also dried up and I was going to have to start major job hunting - and then the experience of that job hunting - there was a depression zone where I absolutely dried up on words. Like, nearly completely. Most of my WIPs just kind of hung in space, and I had to start an entirely new Good Omens fic (forth the fifth) to have anything going on, and THEN it was only a super-hyperfixation on Detroit: Become Human that really pulled me out of the wordslump and back into writing things. Getting back to the WIPs has been challenging.
And with my new job, there aren't wordcounts I can tally towards anything -- I'm writing and editing at the same time, and sometimes working on things like how the fuck do we cite this and a surprising amount of meetings, and the moral of this story is that I'm unlikely to make either my formal or informal GYWO target this year -- which again, I don't do it for the win, but boy howdy did I misjudge this year.
And what have I learnt about my writing process this year? Since that was the entire point of trying a new target and a new approach? Well, fuck, I'm not sure I've learnt anything, except that it's more fun to write when people are directly cheering you on, which isn't anything new. As of today I've written about 150K, and 135 days out of the year. I am 69 days behind where I should be and there are like. Idk. 70 days left in the year? So obviously I'm not gonna make it lol.
Anyway this has been a long ramble about things that are only important in my head, with no real conclusion. Clearly I am a professional! And I need to get back to actual work!
Stay tuned for NaNoWriMo, where I try to get my 3 FTH fics out in a month while still updating at least 3 WIPs! oh my god, why am i like this? I'm so stupid?
Talk to me about your 2022 writing (or creating in general, if you're a creator but not a writer!). How did you do. How dumb am I. It is a mystery!

Listed fandom fun
A bit of random data before we jump into the rankings for listed fandoms …
Since the numbers post yesterday we've had signups for nearly 60 new auctions, bringing the current total to 779. That beats the number of signups for 2016/7, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, and puts us withing spitting distance of our record last year of 819. Can we do it? Will we do it? Signal boost FTH posts and encourage others to participate. More money raised for good causes, more fanworks in the world — it's a win/win!
We posted yesterday about the state of our unlisted write-in fandoms (we've had nine new ones since then!). Time to check in with the rankings for the listed fandoms.
At the top of the pack we have:
87 K-Pop * 66 Good Omens 50 Sherlock Holmes * 44 Harry Potter * 37 Marvel * 32 DC * 31 Mo Dao Zu Shi / The Untamed 27 Red, White, & Royal Blue 25 Star Wars * 23 Scum Villain's Self-Saving System
Our first tie is for 11th place -
22 Avatar The Last Airbender 22 Teen Wolf
And after that, nearly every other place is a tie. And which ones are ties for which places can be shifted slightly with just one signup. Or completely upended with two. Where will your fandom land?
Remember that if your fandom isn't here (or in the rest of the list below the cut), you can write it in. Signups are OPEN through Monday!
