I've noticed that whenever I argue about city planning with someone who has suburban brainrot they inevitably whip out some variation of "I don't want depressive commieblocks" arguments and show me a photo of some Siberian industrial hellhole in the middle of winter to illustrate their point. Thought I'd go outside and take some photos to show how "commieblocks" look when you don't go out of your way to the most depressing part of Russia to prove your point
Minsk, Belarus, literally 5 minutes away from a factory, sports centre, 3 schools, 2 kindergartens, a hospital, a dentist, a clinic, 4 bus stops, and only god knows how many grocery shops and fastfood joints.
There's a lot of things to criticize soviets for, but city planning is not one of those things. I don't think it's physically possible to live anywhere in a post-sovirt city and not be within 15 minute walk of everything you need in your day to day live.

Me when I have to visit a suburb. I hope you all are doing well!! Stay safe!!!
This is the last cosplay photo I have in the backlog so it will be a bit until my next one. I'm working on a new cosplay that's almost done and will post pics when I'm back home!! The only thing missing is the wig which will probably take a while since it's backordered.

Blue and white flowers grow beside gravel
The corn in the fields is taller than me
And my only company for miles around
Is another fucking subdivision

Living in a suburb was legitimately so much worse than living anywhere else in my life. The isolation from the rest of town, the disgustingly clean atmosphere, and worst of all, the people.
You want to meet some of the most petty, self-absorbed, ignorant bastards in America? Look no further than your local suburb. This goes double if you live in the south. You so much as look at them strange and they'll clutch their fake pearls and say some nasty ass shit.
Moral of the story, fuck suburbs.

the pockets poll earlier had me wondering is everyone really like. totally unconcerned with the possibility of their phone being stolen out of the back pocket or just living wildly different lives where that isn't even a thing to be concerned about? so now i'm making my own poll

Kid brother is judging me for how small my apartment is and esp how narrow the tiny galley kitchen is and it's like??? A 1bdrm 500 sq ft apartment in a good commuting location in THIS ECONOMY??? My place, given the cleanliness, area, price, etc is a STEAL, relatively. Yes it's insane that rent is this much, but COMPARATIVELY???
Also you're 15 and don't know shit all ok. Shut up. My shoulders have been ever so gradually lightening. I've been stopping and sitting and just. Contemplating. I laid in bed in the sun with the windows open. There's so much natural light. I can simply turn off my phone and my family is unable to contact me. They are not listed on any of my bills, they don't have a key. I'm freed.
I mean there's also me being categorically allergic to the idea of suburbs and the whole stupid white fence two car garage big lawn single family dwelling. Fuck that. Give me mixed construction areas, duplexes and quadplexes and houses closer together. Shared community and outdoor spaces. Unironically I think living cheek and jowl /can/ lead to greater senses of community and shared humanity. It doesn't always, but it's sure af more conducive to it than every man living separate as the king of his own castle, driving everywhere, and only interacting with people who are of a similar social class/demographic.
Do I have strong opinions on how city planning both shapes and reflects societal values??? And also solidarity in every day aspects of life as an extension of our common humanity? Maybe so.

I actually had to stop reading this book because one of the characters was like I went to a place called the Waffle House... near Chicago (or in Chicago???)... and I can tell you with a 100% certainty that there is no Waffle House in near Chicago. .. why would you set your story in Chicago if you didn't know that. The closest one is downstate.

that “why do modern AUs even exist” post does piss me off a little bit like. the more i think about it. because like, yeah, a lot of modern AUs are kind of flat, because you have this sort of situation where the setting is its own sort of plastic fantasy (i.e. like. So Many Coffee Shop Ship AUs) that doesn’t do anything for some folks, myself included. but that isn’t really grounds to be like ugh why would you EVER put a character from a fantastical media into a BORING real life situation what COMPELS you to do that🙄
like.... sorry, man, people make modern/’real life’ AUs because those AUs are Fucking Fun. it’s so fun to take characters from these zany high stakes worlds and put them in a “boring” modern setting where the highest stakes get are that they have a job interview on Monday. You can sit there for HOURS trying to figure out how they would behave in that world, how plot beats from canon would translate in some low stakes suburban slice of life realm. “imagine if they were boring young adults living in a generic suburb” Do You Have Any Idea How Many Stupid Situations You Can Put Characters In in That Context. How Many Shitty Apartments You Can Make Them Live In. There’s SO much inherent comedy in taking some intense shounen villain and making him manage a Target.
cuz see THAT’S the other thing--these AUs are SO funny just like. on principle. And unfortunately you get a lot of cases of people taking them so so seriously, which CAN make them a little boring imo. but then when people embrace the inherent goofiness of the universe they’re playing with, it’s a BLAST!! When you treat modern AUs like a comedy a whole new world can open up to you. It’s such a fun sandbox to play around in. sorry you can’t see that, *checks* overwatch fan in 2023 🥴

it's wild talking to liberals because i said something like, "isn't it fucked up how this huge percent of living spaces in urban areas are rented and not owned" and someone snaps back with "no actually it's GOOD because people who work in big cities are constantly turning over their jobs and coming and going and migrating anyway and so there NEEDS to be a big renting population to accommodate them!"
my good bitch...why do you think they're constantly turning over their jobs and coming and going and NOT settling down...? *gasp* it couldn't possibly be the lack of affordable housing!

GOD even if the scientists arent a major part of bonefall the way you describe them finding Windclan's stuff in the forest territories is so. not sure if haunting is the right word for it but OOOUGH it makes me want to gnaw on the walls of my enclosure just the way you describe the realization & dawning horror as they realise that a bunch of construction workers literally Destroyed A Society For Suburbs makes me go ABSOLUTELY FERAL
With STARCLAN as my WITNESS I will channel the sickness that rests in my belly when I learn about the destruction of archeological sites and ecosystems into my art and NO ONE will be able to stop me.
Suburbs are a BLIGHT and I will not rest until I have demonized them in every single appearance. The setting as AN ANTAGONIST

Some motherfucker from the suburbs of a big city had the audacity to tell me, a person whose entire family is from a notorious Rust Belt city and who’s uncle still works the night shift at the glass factory, that factory jobs weren’t important in America, and that unions didn’t matter…
Be so serious right now, the bread factory and meat packing factory next to my hometown shut down and the 30,000 people that lived in surrounding towns and worked there, lost their jobs and their livelihoods because the state I live in decided to Union bust like it no tomorrow
The only thing that has protected workers in the Rust Belt is unions, not the government and the state government has been determined to shut down any, and all unions which results in all of the people in places like my hometown losing their jobs.
So your ass, coming from the fucking suburbs of Chicago doesn’t get to tell me that unions and factory workers arent important just because you live in a town where the high school teachers have fucking PhD’s and get paid more than an entire family of generational factory workers. Your lived experience does not hold up to the blue collar towns in states you look down on.
Unions are, and will always be the best and most effect way to protect workers from exploitation and the government and every single human being that has a job benefits from the work of unions in the decades past.
