moss mfriday #1: Funaria hygrometrica (Bonfire Moss)

Funaria hygrometrica is one of my favorite species, because it's the first species I ever identified from a live specimen all by myself! It's a common acrocarpous moss that grows all over the world, from forest floors to sidewalk cracks. Although it prefers mild climates, it's been recorded on nearly every continent. F. hygrometrica sends up its long spindly sporophytes during the rainy season, and as the capsules dry out and prepare to burst, they turn a brilliant fiery orange. Since the actual gametophytes (leafy parts) of the moss are so small, and the plant produces a lot of sporophytes, it creates a golden carpet of moss.

Bonfire moss can be differentiated by its characteristic twisty seta and "nodding" sporophyte capsules, its persistent pointed calyptra, and its multi-branched rhizoids. There are dozens of species in the Funaria genus, but hygrometrica is the most common. Some other species include F. flavicans, which have a small awn at the end of their leaves, and F. arctica, a cold-climate species found on mineral soils and sand in North America.

Funaria Decades - 1890s
The petting farm business is growing, although slowly, so once Amos and Agnes aged up, the family is now Babies Sleeping on the Floor Poor.
I was also Today-years-old when I learned that if a baby is being held when it has a blowout, it just shits all over whoever is holding it? Awesome.
And even though the petting farm is STILL designated as a SHOP, the farm stand itself never, ever sells anything. Nothing. Their entire income is ticket sales, and it is a shop.
Michael Bell did definitely bring his stupid smelly baby, to pee on the floor right in front of it, which definitely helps.
If you decide to go the Petting Farm route, just know to harvest your stuff every morning before you open. Because they will just STEAL ALL OF YOUR EGGS.
Lettie also aged up, and also smells like crap. And these kids bathe. I don't get it, did they make sims more disgusting? It's all farts and pee puddles.

It's Wednesday, I'm taking my kids to the fair today and also: I shockingly have something to share again even though it seems to be a quiet Tumblr day today. (Maybe you are all at the fair too?)
I posted Chapter 6 of Hiding Out in the Open on Monday (@artsyunderstudy's birthdayyyyy which I think everyone in this fandom can agree deserves so much celebrating - HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEEK ASHTON), and when I did I committed to posting Chapter 7 VERY SOON too. Mainly because as so often happens to me, things mushroomed and so the end of the forthcoming Ch 7 is really where I wanted to get to in the story. And the good news is: it's done! I've sent it to my tremendous beta readers and I'm feeling pretty good about it.
Anyway, have some of it:
“Snow…” I say with trepidation. Because there’s a bloody dryad standing there. She’s slight, with smooth green skin and spindly limbs emerging from a lacy, black puff sleeve dress. Her look, which I can only describe as lolita goth, includes a black corset and black granny boots, and her hair looks like what would happen if one styled a giant black clematis flower into a mod bob. She looks pointedly at the sign—“MEMBERS ONLY £10”—that sits on the little table she’s set herself up behind. “Just, wait here,” he replies. He slips his hand out of mine and walks up to the table. “Um, are you”—he pulls a slip of paper out of his pocket and reads from it—“Viticaulis?” “Please,” the dryad says, “call me Vee.” (With the way Snow butchered her full name I can understand why.) She smiles up at him inscrutably. “What do you seek?” “Um, I think I’m on the list?” He shoves his hands in his pockets. “Simon Snow?” “I know who you are,” she says placidly. Then she smirks in my direction. “Funaria wasn’t kidding, your bloodeater is handsome.” She gestures toward a heavy set of velvet curtains. “You are both welcome to enter.” “Uh, thanks,” Simon mumbles, grabbing me by the wrist. “Where are we, Snow?” I hiss. “Why does she know—” “Just—” He yanks me past the dryad, who winks at me, and through the curtains. “See for yourself.”

This post is about:
The evolution of plants!
Plant evolution is a bit complex but beautiful. This post serves to educate you without losing your interest! [And it serves as a method of studying for me too :)]
Let's start simple!
The plant kingdom:
Plants are multicellular (are made of multiple cells) organisms (living beings) that contain chlorophyll. This is the green pigment that absorbs sunlight, allowing the plant to make their own food by photosynthesis [and it gives the plant its signature green colour!].
All plant cells have a cell wall found outside of their cell membrane. It is non-living and made of cellulose. It allows liquids and dissolved substances to pass through it. Thus, it is permeable. The cell membrane only allows certain substances through as it is partially permeable.
Most mature plant cells have a large permanent vacuole filled with the fluid sap. This is an aqueous solution of sugars and salts. The vacuole also produced turgor pressure on the cytoplasm and cell wall, making the cell firm/turgid.
Advantages of plant life in water:
Water provided:
Support, allowing for more exposure to sunlight.
Constant supply of water.
Readily available minerals.
A medium for spore/gamete transfer [necessary for reproduction].
Advantages of plant life on land:
Land provides:
Abundant sunlight.
Higher concentration of carbon dioxide.
Space availability as land had not yet been colonised by animals.
But land also provided many challenged for plants like:
Exposure to UV radiation which could cause mutations.
Exposure to air increases the chances of dessication (drying).
Structures needed support to replace the buoyancy previously offered by water.
Male gametes [sex cells] required a watery medium to reach female gametes.
Thus, plants had to develop structure that could:
Provide ways of capturing and filtering light.
Avoid dessication.
Offer structural support.
Facilitate transfer of gametes.
Now on to a bit more complicated stuff...
Plant evolution is grouped into five main divisions:
Bryophyta, pteridophyta, gymnosperms, monocotyledonous angiosperms and dicotyledonous angiosperms.
[Gymnosperms and angiosperms and collectively known as Spermatophytes]
Bryophyta:
This includes liverworts like Pellia and mosses like Funaria.
They have a very simple structure known as the thallus, with no proper roots, leaves, and stems.
They have hair-like structures called rhizoids on the lower surface to absorb moisture.
Their size is limited due to the absence of vascular tissue (xylem - structures that transport water and minerals, and phloem - structures that transport food).
Their spreading is also limited as they are heavily dependent on water.
Pteridophyta:
Ferns are pteridophyta.
They have roots, stems and leaves.
They possess vascular tissues (xylem + phloem), and thus, they can reach larger sizes.
Their leaves are called fronds, and these are made of smaller leaves called pinnae. These have a waxy layer that prevents water loss, allowing them to colonise drier areas. [Reproduction still requires a damp environment].
They have sporangia (capsules that produce spores) on the lower side of leaves, typically grouped in compact groups called sori.
Gymnosperms (conifers):
These are able to conserve water, allowing them to survive in both cold and dry climates. They have small leaves adapted to help them withstand drought on poor soils or in freezing/hot conditions.
Many of these plants are evergreen (keep their leaves all year round).
They reproduce via seeds formed in cones. [Gymnosperms - naked seeds. The seeds are not enclosed in an ovary.].
They are woody plants with true roots, stems and leaves.
Many conifers possess both male and female cones on the same tree, with the female cone being larger than the male and different in appearance.
Spores no longer require water and are dispersed by wind. Gametes do not require water for fertilisation anymore and instead occurs via a pollen tube. [This shows how evolution was in favour of life on land without the need for water for fertilisation].
An example of a gymnosperm is the Aleppo pine.
Angiosperms:
These are plants with seed bearing flowers. The seeds are formed in the ovaries of flowers.
Seeds may be protected by being in a fruit.
These range from small herbs to large trees.
This division is split into two groups:
Monocotyledons:
These tend to have a fibrous root system and long parallel-veined leaves.
Their floral parts are in multiples of three [3..6..9].
They have vascular bundles throughout the stem.
The seed has one cotyledon [food store].
Ex: Daffodils.
Dicotyledons:
These tend to have a tap root system and broad net-veined leaves.
Their floral parts are in multiples of fours or fives. [4..8..12] [5..10..15].
They have vascular bundles at the periphery (edges) of the stem.
The seed has two cotyledons (food stores).
Ex: wallflower, daisy.
Plant colonisation of land provided food, prompting aquatic organisms to move to land, too.
That's the end of my first post! I hope it was interesting and relatively understandable. If you have any comments you'd like to leave to add onto this information, any questions, or any suggestion, please go right ahead!
Thank you for reading, and have a good day or night!

Queen Designs for the Ghostflames AU
Queen Mariana —
A kind yet closed off queen who doesn’t tend to directly address her subjects, instead speaking through her sons or advisors, fearing a possible assassination following her older sister’s mysterious passing.
I’m not the proudest of her colors but overall her design is pretty good considering how much I dislike using blue in most designs.
King Silver —
After the death of his wife, the queen, due to an illness she’d had since hatching, he rules her kingdom so it doesn’t fall to shambles, as he waits for their only child, an heir, to reach maturity so she can take over.
Queen Mirage —
A paranoid queen who doesn’t even trust her own blood after hearing of the assassination of the eldest Seawing princess at the time, she does not trust anyone to be near her without some sort of witness present.
Queen Talon —
A confident queen who challenged her mother as soon as she came of age, she considers herself fair to her subjects, and while she doesn’t treat them poorly, many will note her ignorance of the poorer population.
Queen Starspeaker —
A dragon who believes herself to be the best Nightwing ruler in history, especially after her mother seemed to leave their kingdom in shambles, however, she fails to take notice of her fathers bitterness towards her after his queens death at her claws.
Queen Funaria —
Forced to take over the position of queen when her older sister, the previous queen, died, Funaria does not hold the title in confidence, never adorning herself and insists to not be referred to as queen. She waits patiently for her own clutch to hatch, and for her daughter to challenge her, so her kingdom will have a more suitable ruler.
Queen Iridescence —
Believing fully in her own authority, she does not have much influence in day to day rain kingdom life, only seen when casually traveling through the trees, at sun time, or when her citizens request an audience. She is confident in her ability as a ruler.
Queen Ghost —
An older queen with a single daughter and a son on the way, she rules her kingdom with understanding yet firmness, quick to forgive simple mistakes, but just as quick to handle a problem herself.

Funaria Decades - 1890
Alma soon found herself very pregnant, which cut into some of her constant canning time, and caused a few floor peeing episodes due to their outhouse occasionally forgetting that it is an outhouse.
And while Alma was growing a baby, Henry was working hard to slowly expand the product inventory on their farm stand. Still, they do almost NO business, with Bella Goth and Landgrab stopping by to stink and pee all over the ground, but purchase nothing.
And along came their first child, a girl named Lettice, which is a TOTALLY REAL NAME that I found on this baby name website, so while it's super hilarious to me, it's also historically accurate!

I'm just doing my job, Viktor! You don't have to be so formal and 'show me off'!
But if they want an example-I am currently studying Funaria hygrometrica, a moss that can absorb a large amount of lead due to a special kind of acid in its cell walls.
People oftentimes look over the many benefits of moss. Just think!
The role of natural solutions in pollution control: If we were to implement moss beds into sewer systems and runoffs, the percentage of toxins in the water could decrease significantly. This could lead to a future with fewer water pollutants that Zuanites are exposed to, all achieved without artificial means!
Apologies…I got carried away.
how's sky? she's such an intelligent woman i'd love to see what she's studying and what projects she's got going on – does she specialise in botanical science/biology? also she is sosososos pretty whosaidthat
Her interests extend beyond simple mechanics or chemistry, and it is for this reason, in addition to her natural brilliance and work ethic, that we hired her. She has recently been studying bio-adaptive materials that can be used as regenerative energy sources. Her work has been instrumental in our recent research on how to improve Undercity ecology.

#1478 - Funaria hygrometrica - Bonfire Moss
A bright orange moss in Yalgorup National Park, south of Perth, growing in thick mats after the devastating bushfire of 2016.
Also known as common cord-moss, little goldilocks, and golden maidenhair. It’s normally green, but the distinctively asymmetrical, grooved antheridia are this spectacular golden-orange.
It grows on moist, shady, and damp soil, moist walls and the crevices of rocks. Frequently around around human dwellings and dairies, with a distinct preference for higher nitrogen levels and recently burnt sites. The species completes its life cycle quickly before weathering, microbes and other plants make the habitat - nutrient poor upper levels of the soil - unsuitable. It may also indicate the site of an old camp fire, fire pit or human dwelling.
Found over most of the world, and in nurseries and greenhouses it is sometimes regarded as a weed. It also makes a good mid-sized moss for bonsai pots. The hardiness, vigor and size also make it an excellent teaching example of a moss lifecycle.
