Afro Futuristic Dreams by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids

Afro Futurism runs like a mercury current through jazz, funk and soul, taking on shifting silvery contours as it reimagines race, enslavement, religion, magic and science. From Hendrix’s wigged out “Third Stone from the Sun,” to Parliament’s Mothership to the skronk and revelation of Sun Ra, it infuses black music with mystery and proposes alternate ways of envisioning the most painful arcs of world history. Idris Ackamoor taps into this rich tradition in this latest album with the Pyramids, weaving groove, celebration and ritual together in a colorful synthesis.

Sonically, Afro Futuristic Dreams has much in common with recent Sun Ra Arkestra discs, especially Swirling from 2020, with its lush, big band aesthetics and psychedelic soul spoken and sung lyrics. It merges earthy beats with gleaming technological visions, the opening, title cut blasting off like a rocket from the clanging, swaying West African guitar riffs and textured layers of hand drums. But if that opening sounds, just a touch, like Mdou Moctar holding court, the long, trippy “Thank You God,” is all liquid whorls of jazz sax sound, creaky bass slides and dream-sequence harp arpeggios. A celestial aura hangs over it, and yet it swings, especially when the singing comes in with rippling choruses of “Thank you god.”

The disc leans back into Afro-beat with the funk-swaggering “Police Dem,” with its walloping horn line and rough-edged call and response. If “Thank You God” idealizes, “Police Dem,” cuts to the real, with fired up verses about young men shot in the back, yet it does so with heat and syncopation and hip-swiveling beats. So, too, does “Truth to Power,” splice a message of resistance to undulating, North African rhythms. Ackamoor’s sax solo is especially enflamed in this track.

There’s a good deal of spoken word on this album, the sort of poetry that’s meant to inspire but seems a little overblown. It’s part of the genre, obviously, and it gets swallowed, soon enough, by groove. But you have to stick with it through the flute-scented rites of “First Peoples,” the downtempo intro to “Re-Memory” to get to the music. I could do without it, personally. The music, though, is pretty great, in the way it grabs onto all kinds of black influences—jazz, soul, R&B, rock, afro-beat, ethiojazz— and mixes them up in a frenetic blender. It imagines alternate future full of bright colors and sounds, aiming towards justice but with space for joy.

SAPPHIC ARTISTS TO LISTEN TO

(instead of writing your 69th essay about how Taylor Swift is a closet lesbian)

Starting off with my holy trinity:

Rina Sawayama (she/her, bi/pan): if you follow me you're probably aware of what a huge Rina fan I am. Lots of pop and rock, with a chunk of her earlier songs being R&B. Her debut album SAWAYAMA (my favourite album of all time!!) was her major breakthrough moment as it received critical acclaim and her sophomore album Hold the Girl made her the highest charting Japanese artist in the history of the UK. Known for her musical versatility, she made her acting debut in John Wick 4. I recommend: Cherry, Frankenstein and Bad Friend

Janelle Monáe (she/they, bi/pan): pop, funk, neo-soul and psychedelic. They have an entire series of concept albums about an android named Cindy Mayweather (her ALTER EGO?!) as she commits the crime of falling in love with a human. Lots of social commentary. Her album Dirty Computer comes along with a narrative film and a book taking place in its world. She's starred in movies like Antebellum, Glass Onion and Moonlight. I recommend: Electric Lady, Django Jane and Pynk

Raveena Aurora (she/her, bi): Experimental pop, R&B and soul. Her second album Asha's Awakening is a concept album following the journey of Asha, a Punjabi space princess, as it explores Aurora's South Asian identity and past relationships. Such a beautiful and soft voice to die for. I recommend: Headaches, If Only and Kathy Left 4 Kathmandu

Moving onto some other artists I like:

Boygenius: a band comprising of three sapphic women- Phoebe Bridgers (indie darling™), Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker (the first two are bi while the third is a lesbian). Indie, folk and alternative rock. Very melancholic. I urge you to check out their individual projects too (especially Phoebe's, I love her Punisher album). I recommend: Emily I'm Sorry, Satanist and True Blue

Kelela (she/her, queer): R&G, electronic and alternative R&B. Her debut EP Hallucinogen covers the beginning, middle and end of a relationship in reverse chronological order. Her second album Raven showcases Black futuristic art, which I fuck with. I recommend: Contact, The High and Bluff

Zolita (she/her, lesbian): dark-pop, R&B and electropop. She incorporates witchcraft into her music and mvs. She literally has an EP called Sappho what more could you want? I recommend: Holy, Ashley (the sapphic Speak Now) and Bedspell

Victoria Monét (she/her, bi): pop and R&B. She's written songs for artists like Ariana Grande (7 Rings) and Chloe x Halle (Do It). Go stream her Jaguar EP you will thank me later. I recommend: Touch Me (erotic sapphic song), Cupid and Love U Better

My personal hc for funk Branch and Lownote Jones' relationship is that it's somehow neither fully romantic nor fully platonic. They are in this weird and mostly indescribable in-between relationship of kinda on-and-off boyfriends and queerplatonic life partners. Are they planning to grow old together in a quaint cottage in Pluto, possibly with children? Yes, absolutely. Are they dating? Eeehhhh kinda? Maybe? Sometimes? The answer changes based on the day you're asking, who are you asking to and the position of the moon if you're asking on a Tuesday and/or Friday.

They mostly skip the labels and just leave it at 'best friends' (which is true, they are also each other's best friend) and maybe 'life partners' once they are older. If they ever get married it will be either exclusively for tax benefits or because D really wanted to be Branch's best man, possibly both. Summoning up, their relationship could be mostly best described with vibes, expensive dates across the multiverse and mad scientists who sometimes kiss to celebrate their life-changing scientific breakthrough of the week.

Honestly I like the idea that Funk Trolls have a completely different concept of romance than other trolls with various labels and types thanks to how futuristic they are but I can't say that without the fear a Homestuck fan will point at it and then I'll be getting asks about Chaz kismesissitude.
