On one hand, it makes absolutely no sense lore-wise for fuzzification to give anyone anything but grizzly bear traits. It's very explicitly made from Mr. Grizz's DNA, and that alone, no other mammal material in the mix.

On the other hand, it's so cool to think about what characters would become what animals if the ooze DID just mammal-ify you without it specifically being bear-based...

Possible justification for the latter I came up with while writing this post: the Alterna mind crystals picked up on Mr. Grizz's desire to re-mammal the world, and as such "carries out" this "command" by "rearranging" the avaliable bear genes in different ways to mimic different animals Grizz remembers from his pre-WWV life as a normal bear and his time on the Ark Polaris. It can't apply a trait that Mr. Grizz doesn't have the preexisting genetics for, but it CAN use them selectively.

For instance, let's say Mr. Grizz has the code for a few different tones of grizzly brown fur within his DNA, expressed on different parts of his body or buried as unexpressed recessive genes. The ooze can perhaps cause these colours to be expressed in spots or stripes. If you want to really stretch things, you could say that he's a carrier for recessive albino or melanistic colouration, to get white or black fur respectively, although on second thought you could just say the ooze fucked with the melanin production genes itself... regardless, many fur colours such as orange and grey probably couldn't be found at all, but you have wiggle room with how far you want to push this, at least. Or perhaps the ooze can just yoink pigment production genes from the Mollusk Era host themselves!

Perhaps the ooze could apply the hefty muscle and fat growth of a bear to certain individuals, to mimic certain species (such as, uh, bears). Or some could get just muscle (for primates, bovids, canines, idfk), and some just fat (maybe for seals, pigs and cetaceans), and maybe some would just gain larger skeletal frames but no additional bulk (moose??giraffe?? maybe??).

Then you've got selective application of teeth/claws, diet/taste, instincts such as aggression, protectiveness and hibernation, vocal stuff, mannerisms... you could probably cobble together most large mammals from bear traits. It's just a shame there can't be horns, antlers or unique ears...

8 years later she gets screwed over after a Salmon Run and her boss mr. Grizz DECIDES TO MAKE HER A FURRY WITH FUZZY OOZE

so yea she's NOT having a funtime

thankfully this is the last awful thing to happen to her (well mutation wise) and she goes back to therapy with some added baggage

the spire of order ends up speeding up her recovery significantly though

the only good thing to come out of this au is that Desti is alive and well (she just has Meggy's trauma in canon x2 double it and pass it along to the next guy, she was that guy) xalling this au Triple Dose cause why not - Superluigiglitchy

I imagine by the time of her fuzzification she's just resigned to it like "yeah this might as well happen, my life's already been so fucking weird and traumatizing up to now."

If she ever finds out about Order/Smollusk's stupid Greyscaling plan she'll probably just be relieved that it didn't come with any aftereffects (and also a bit guilty due to also being slightly glad that Literally Everyone in Town was affected this time instead of just her and some Octarians).

but then finally after all this shit and starting her therapy in the memverse and gradually recovering her memories, along with the surgery to reverse he fuzzification, the universe finally decided to take a hint and stopped using her as a punching bag

Sooooo it turns out there’s a bigger reason Cameron wanted me to post about him here- it’s because he’s made a friend! On one of his recent… trips, he met an octoling named Gabe, and apparently they’re roommates now!

You can’t tell from the pictures, but Gabe’s tentacles are actually a little bit all fuzzy! And his ink has this cool swirly pattern to it. I’m glad Cameron’s giving him a place to stay~

i can’t seem to find. any info at ALL on fuzzy ooze besides fan theories. I was curious if there was any process of mammalisation revealed anywhere?? Im assuming not cus we only recently got sanitisation up to scratch. But is there any important info on fuzzy octos at all? CEO of splatoon lore pls help!!

i was really looking forward to the S3 artbook giving us SOMETHING about fuzzy ooze or filling in any of the numerous gaps in ROTM's story. cannot begin to express how disappointed i was when i opened up the artbook to find that THIS was the only page on fuzzy octarians

the blurb on the top can be boiled down to "why are octavio's troops in alterna? wow theyre fuzzy. do they even have any ego left?" like ok that's just. basic observations and things that were mentioned in promo materials. and we cant say this is like out of spoiler avoidance because the previous page has (also very little) concepts for hugefry and grizz. go girl give us nothing! In terms of dev interviews, the april 2023 famitsu interview has 2 questions regarding fuzzy octos:

----Was it the effects of the fuzzy ooze that caused the Octarians in Alterna to grow hair? Inoue: under the effects of the fuzzy ooze, they're on the verge of becoming mammals.  ----In the case of the new Agent 3, when they come into contact with the ooze they suddenly grow hair. Are the Octarians supposed to be in the middle stage? Inoue: That’s right.

Within less than a year of Octo expansion's release, we got a few dev interviews and a whole artbook giving further clarification on sanitization, tartar's motives, the octarians in the metro...even though some elements were unclear until side order and some responses were dodgy, there still was something to work with and some gaps filled.

in the two years since ROTM we got uh. the one dev interview, which, while that did explain a few things with alterna and smallfry, gave us Nothing about fuzzification or mammalization. whatever it's called. aside from those 2 answers above. is the process reversible? how did grizz get all those troops? why is there an octoplush track that uses dedf1sh's naming scheme? oh yeah, and literally nothing about ORCA or any expansion on grizz's character in ROTM. ORCA goes completely unmentioned in the artbook. hello. im getting side tracked.

and before we couldve gotten another chance for answers on ROTM, side order came out, and all focus in terms of splatoon's story got directed towards that.

I will be genuinely surprised if bancalawalker gives us anything on ROTM since that's seems to be the side order/later update artbook my only hope is that, since there's some suspicious things unanswered for about lil judd and grizzco, maybe, hard maybe, the fuzzy octarians could be addressed in any capacity again, like how side order expanded on OE? But idk it seemed like ROTM was a way to just wrap up the squidbeak saga and they could just Not mention it again lol. one last thing. these amped octostamps, an enemy introduced in rotm, have full 3d renders. notice a uh. lack of fur.

or another wacky thing. is how the only artwork we have of an octarian (non octoling) in the tableturf style is a normal non fuzzy octotrooper.

my Game Theory is that. i think rotm had some... late in development decisions in terms of story direction, with the fuzzy octarians being one of those later decisions.

Day 19: this one got delayed thanks to me going to see The Wild Robot. Great movie. Anyways, that’s my Neo 3, Aria… one of the Neo 3s that is.

Day 20: needs no introduction.

Day 23: Acht, once again pretty plain and simple. The quote in the background is from the book Ninteen Eighty-Four, I know it’s pretty hard to make out.

Day 24: Yummy illegal experimentation. My upcoming comic deals a lot with Fuzzification, it’s just a super fun concept to write with (even if it’s a pain to draw). OC doesn’t exactly have a name yet, quote is from Spooky’s Jumpscare mansion (again with the obscure quotes, but I thought it fit too well)

Day 26: My rendition of, in my opinion, one of the best moments in the franchise. Side order was a joy to play. Really striving to replay it but not sure how to at the moment

Day 29: Can’t go Splatober without the iconic heavenly melody. This piece has to do with OC lore, but I’m not gonna reveal it right now…

Ivy (She/Her) (Neo Agent 3) (14)

Ivy is an amateur engineer who enjoys making gadgets!

Although those gadgets often have exposed wiring & circuitry, meaning that she can't feasibly use any of them outside of the workshop she set up in Alterna.

She always says she'll work on a second model, but it usually never happens.

She's native to the Splatlands.

She's the one who first met Smallfry.

She doesn't have parents, and she's spent most of her life with Smallfry.

She lives in one of the train carriages seen in the character select and tutorial.

She has an active disdain for Grizzco, especially the employees that take active joy in their job.

She got clawed near the end of her one-on-one fight with Mr. Grizz and experiences partial internal fuzzification because of it. (More on that here)

She was on Team Future for the GrandFest.

Basil (He/Him) (Agent 5) (14)

Basil is a... historian you could say? He collects ancient human music and attempts to translate it into inklish.

He does this with a group of friends he had before joining the NSS. (I'll talk about them later)

He lives in an apartment in Splatsville with said friends.

He's also native to the Splatlands, but frequently leaves to search other areas of the world.

He found Alterna on his own, and got recruited by the squid sisters and Captain.

The main reason he joined was so he could explore Alterna and look for artifacts. He was later told that this was actually helpful to the NSS' research, so he didn't even need to hide it.

He was on Team Past for the Grandfest.

Neo is mainly just here for their friends and turf war, and not much else.

Neo was one of the inklings who moved to Splatsville after the Finalfest in Splatoon 2.

Funnily enough, the were one of the earliest to hop on the trend, you could say before it even was a trend.

They also live in an apartment in Splatsville, although it's not the same one as Basil's apartment.

They mainly do turf war and ranked to pay the bills, but they used to work at Grizzco until Ivy talked them out of it.

They knew Ivy before the events of ROTM.

They joined the NSS alongside Ivy because they decided to follow cuttlefish together.

Neo was on Team Present for the Grandfest.

No matter what, the only guaranteed time we have is now! I have to make the most of every moment!

For the first time ever Frostyfest was hosted in Splatsville!

Mincemeat Metalworks went through a redesign.

During Off The Hook’s final performance for their World Tour, Marina has a wardrobe malfunction on stage. Pearl immediately screams at the top of her lungs and causes the lights to break.

February:

Inkopolis Square had a mental health crisis where a bunch of people went into a mindless blank. This cleared up a couple weeks later.

Baggy Clothes bursts into popularity.

March:

Suffer No Fools by Off The Hook v Fire and Ice dropped

Toni Kensa got drunk at a party and posted on Squitter that ‘The Enperry Brand is a pathetic excuse of a brand.’ This trended for WEEKS. Pearl made a statement stating that ‘Toni is some snobby loser who gets no bitches.’

April:

Undertow Spillway went through a redesign.

Fans of C-Side and Squid Squad feud online over the song Splattack! This led to several c-side fans doxxing a group of squid squad fans.

Paul from Sashimori begins an ARG like event to advertise the band’s new EP that released later that year.

May:

A Makomart manager at the Inkopolis location was found guilty of embezzlement.

Owner of Ammo Knights, Sheldon, speaks out against Squitism Speaks, claiming it is ‘dangerous to the Squitism community.’

June:

New history unveiled about the great turf war reveals that Craig Cuttlefish and DJ Octavio were “very close friends” and even shared quarters with eachother on several occasions. Neither parties have chosen to comment on this findings.

Shellendorf becomes the most listened to musical since the Lionfish King.

July:

Scientists have discovered a treatment for “Fuzzification” so people infected can have better qualities of life. These treatments allow for those affected to be able to change their ink colors, allowing them to participate in Ink Sports and other activities.

August:

Baker from C-Side said a slur on national television.

Omega 3’s DJ, The Faithful Servant of the True Salmon Emperor Hizunamasu, learns how to play Tromebone, Clarinent, AND Flute just to get samples for the new song, Double Clickbait. Salmon Runners who worked at Salmon Jammin’ Junction said it “wasn’t very good” and “needed tuning.”

Local punk Spyke gets arrested for tax evasion. Is released by technicality.

September:

Salmonid Tribes attack the still under construction Grand Splatlands Bowl, causing Grizzco to put all hands on deck to collect over a billion eggs in order to drive out the Salmonids.

During this, a Salmonid rights activist is caught and arrested for attempting to set fire to Grizzco’s Splatsville branch. Grizzco officials said that the damage was minimal, but shocking nevertheless.

The Salmonid rights activist escaped prison. Grizzco has chosen to drop charges.

Grand Festival featuring the Squid Sisters, Off The Hook, and Deep Cut went off with a bang. The fest’s theme being Which is most important to you: Past, Present or Future. Team Past won.

October:

A young inkling splats another inkling as a “Splatoween prank”, cries when facing the consequences of her actions.

November:

Nothing ever happens in November.

December:

Salmonid Tribes attacked Wahoo World, and sends Grizzco under fire for their lack of management as a Goldie has been reported to be stabbing employees and civilians with multiple knives.

A large fight happened on Fiddler Tower ending with idol group Colorgraphic dropping a new remix of Calamari Inkantation. And later dropping a new single titled Re:UNIon. (Please listen to it, it made me cry several times)

How does Fuzzification and, Salmonification? work in homerun? Specficially if theres any mental changes!

Ramblings under the cut! :

To preface, I’m gonna start off with some Inkling biology: Inklings are designed to transform and explode (splat) and be tricky and swift via means of completely deconstructing their bodies into a bunch of memory holding parts that are capable of reattaching themselves and forming DIFFERENT parts depending on the command given… this is the act of transforming between kid and swim form, and it’s possible to linger on phases between transforming. This makes inklings extremely powerful and vulnerable in the same stroke. Sort of a glass canon species, no muscles, no true bones, just ink that shifts and exists in gooey messes, or in mini pressurized blasts that mimic muscle when needed or condense into super compressed pressurized parts that stand in for “bone”, the only true separate organ that exists outside of the ink blueprint that mimics organs is the membrane outside the skin, and this is only because it is made of a different series of material than organs and ink (which all contains the same cells, the one that allow them to splat / transform / etc). This “membrane” is a super thin organ that holds all of the “ink” when they get splatted, though it doesn’t physically “hold” the cells, in simpler terms it sort of acts as a thin bag that carries the blueprint cells, it is the structure that allows the cells to fill in details…

The membrane functions like … imagine a plastic glove, the glove is the membrane, next to the glove is a puddle of ink, the ink is the organ/transforming cells. The glove has the ability to pull the water inside of it, and the water is always attached to the glove, even if not inside it, and the glove can pull and release the water at will. When filled, the shape of the glove makes it so the water inside the glove will always, even when stretched or pulled, form a hand. If the glove is torn, the shape distorts, or doesn’t fill properly, depending on the tear. The membrane is able to release ink by seperating very very slightly, enough for ink to burst out of the gaps. (I imagine inklings feel like water balloons filled to the brim… like on the brink of popping? Squishy, yet “dense.”)

Sanitization was a means of replacing the membrane with thick scale like skin. (Btw, this was because in the more detailed sanitization designs I made in the past, I made the skin resemble the scale like patterns used in skin grafts on humans. A thing Inklings wouldn’t ever necessarily need.) Tartar’s quest to make this species who he has deemed worthless feel “even an ounce of humanity” , as a torturous poetic revenge, make them “human.” It forces the membrane to thicken into skin, they can no longer splat or transform. Organs still float in ink globs a tad uselessly inside of them, “useless” organs (as in extra hearts) are surgically removed. There are many complications with sanitization, as it is project made by a damaged rouge ai which was— during the development of santization— unable to speak or communicate eloquently, trying to convey the mess of the emotions it feels via commands and actions. And unfortunately, in this case, it’s squid body horror, it’s physically rejecting taking part in this project, and instead is turning squids into something else entirely.

Cycloid Serum works similarly, but rather it burns off the membrane and heals over it with scales, cycloid serum was the science that was attempted to be created when sanitization was developed. Cycloid serum is more effective on Inklings, since Octolings already have a denser skin. The commander could have probably had printed out a more thorough and in depth explanation of the science used in sanitization… But, oh well. “a tragic error occurred in the device used to develop it, leading to the project’s abandonment.”

Cycloid Serum was made using Salmonid Skin parts as an effort to reduce the deaths caused by rising tides for Inklings. It was mostly used on rouge outskirt inklings who are separate from Inkopolis Inklings. It seems most Inkling’s who agreed to the testing were already seeking out greatness, the test subjects all seemed to be talented and well famed— it later proved that this project was to create ink-salmonids that would rule on the front lines, and the reason “popular / famous / talented “ inklings were chosen is because it directly ties into Salmonid’s religious culture regarding home running.

This project was scraped, but the few remaining Salmon-Inklings are very popular for their sleek design— especially among Dome-Salmonids, who have similar beauty standards to New Inkadia Octarians due to growing up AROUND Inklings/Octolings, meaning short muzzles and humanoid appearances are desirable. (Such as Frye, in the Alterna, aka Cat Hell.) Unfortunately, these Subjects still have Running instincts; and can transform.

Fuzzy Ooze was a separate project not related to the creation of the Cycloid serum. The company who funded this project was still the same, though. Fuzzy Ooze is dense and is layered on top of the Inkfish, and slowly melds into the skin, unlike the previous serums, Fuzzy Ooze CAN infect other species, but it seems it works BEST with Octarians, fuzzy inklings tend to not last, and splat and are capable of fully removing the fuzz, but since Octarians contain more MUSCLE and actual flesh compared to the Ink + Membrane species, Fuzzy Ooze works more effectively. I’ll probably make a detailed post regarding the anatomical differences in each species.

Mental Changes: (ie: what the ask was originally about before I went rogue.)

Santization wipes the memory wholly and totally, and the first moments are rough, as they’re completely hollowed out; they need training to re-remember certain actions and behaviors, most Sanitized subjects are nearly catatonic and unresponsive the first week. Usually after that, they slowly remember ‘habits’ they may have had, such as tapping their foot, dominant hand, humming tunes, if is exclusively muscle memory and mostly they are not responsive nor do they recognize the importance of the behavior. Previous traumas or fears no longer trigger reactions.

Cycloid Serum does not wipe the memory, but rather it forces them to inherit Salmonid Instincts; which makes them inherent generational traumas + inclination towards swimming + cravings and changes in diet… ie experiencing desires inklings would NOT desire. (Mostly because Salmonids NEED water, they need to keep their gills moist to survive, Cycloid Serum victims don’t…) Most have a hard time sorting out memories, much like the Mud; but slightly different… mostly due to being aware and alert. They have their memories, but because they are fueled with random instincts, the “importance” or “significance” of events in their mind will warp… leading to what could be perceived as memory loss, they do, mostly, just thier goals are warped. Because they follow Salmonid Instincts, they can homerun.

Those infected by Fuzzy Ooze will have a change in diet + behaviors + and May develop aches or pains that Inklings wouldn’t typically develop as a result of slowly churning their insides into red blood guts. They also don’t experience memory loss, but as a result of a rush of new emotions + instincts, they can come off as if they DON’T know you, because certain memories are labeled as nonsignificant. There are probably certain types of fuzzy folk depending on the DNA used… but ultimately they are NATURALLY non-violent.

Both Fuzzy and Cycloid’d inkfish can transform. Not neatly nor safely. But they can.

Random thought for your Splatoon Swap AU:

In the Splatoon 3 era, how would the dehydration equivalent work for DJ Octavio?

Maybe a partial Fuzzification leading to a pre-Grizz boss fight, like with Canon Agent 3 and Canon Tartar?

When I say “partial” I mean he retains most of his former personality, but he’s completely fuzzed physically (and becomes a knitting maniac because tarantula design influence hee hoo)

i've never really thought about what happens with octavio in 3, mostly because i feel like the dehydration, and by extension the needing magic brain juice, was a last-minute cop out instead of just killing cuttlefish (and a little because i'm stuck on how to get everyone into alterna in the first place). I'm neutral on killing either of them off, so i can keep octavio. some sort of fuzzification would probably be the best option as i refuse to do the dehydration thing.

for grizz to keep octavio alive and in a salvageable state, then i think he would have to want octavio to be an engineer for building the rocket or delivering the fuzzy ooze. octavio wouldn't wanna cooperate, this guy kidnapped his subjects and is now threatening to kill him, and then he'd get fuzzified just enough to cloud his judgement but still make sure he can build stuff.

i do like the idea of a fuzzy octavio boss fight, but realistically he is cooked without his mech and grizz is not letting him keep that thing. the octo entourage, nss, and deep cut are stuck in alterna together though (cuttlefish doesn't have a mech, only agents, so some of them have to be there from the fight that broke the crater open) so there's probably gonna be more fighting.

octavio would probably be a little fuzzy afterwards, personally i'd rather have octavio wearing steampunk goggles like the fuzzy octolings have (mr grizz is capitalism, steampunk is very industrial revolution-core, leaves a more thematic mark on him than just haha yummy squid jerky) but the spider thing is cute too. he makes organically sourced fur sweaters for his grandchildren and they're grossed out but wear them anyways

i'll probably work out this au better once marching band season is over, but that's still a good bit away

Let's build a Splatoon OC! pt. 12

So far, this character is an extremely tall (over 6'6"), very fat (obese, pear-shaped), dark-skinned Octoling tgirl with purple ink, tentacles with cyan tips and red spots, and a style of dress combining elements of stoner and scenemo culture.

I figured that since the two perfectly tied and were pretty harmonious (looking at you @fish-at-fish-fish-resort), I could just combine the two lol. She smokes an unadvisable amount of seaweed and shops at Squid Hot Topic, what's not to understand?

I really think we're nearing the end here. idk where to go after this one aside from adding "flair" (piercings, skin markings, visible disabilities, scars, sanitization/fuzzification, etc). Suggestions are welcome!
