one of the details in next to normal that genuinely makes me insane is the fact that diana isn’t just imagining a perfect son when she imagines gabe. yes, he’s her “superboy,” but in the very first part of the musical, when she’s “waiting up for him,” she imagines him coming home late like any other teenager. she complains and calls him a loser and a brat and a little shit. she’s not imagining a reality that never would have happened where gabe grew up to be the perfect child that never causes her any problems or stress. she imagines him as a real teenager, someone that could have been. diana doesn’t want the perfect son. she wants her son.

hey tumblr are y’all also having Next To Normal fixations at the moment or am i just stuck in musical/westend tiktok? i am in absolute awe of jack wolfe’s rendition of gabe goodman and thought, “how can i fit my good friend buck buckley into this?” and a vision came to me and it will not leave me alone. so have buck in 911 s4e4-5 having to address his parents’ and sister’s grief made manifest. have buck finally having the ability to name the spectre that has cast the long shadow that he has been living in all of his life. never being good enough for people to stay for, always too much, and forever too exhausting for everybody that no one can ever love him anyway. well, maybe. maybe daniel could have loved him too, if he wasn’t gone too soon.

im obsessed with jack wolfe’s portrayal of gabe goodman because what do you mean you played him as a real person who’s dad and sister ignore him, what do you mean you made him real

his version of gabe is so much more sympathetic and that doesn’t take away the anger or the slightly sinister vibes of the character, but wow every time you look at gabe even when he’s not the one singing or talking, something is always going on with his face and body,

im glad the director let him play around with that and that jack wanted the audience to come to their own conclusions on what gabe is/represents
