2 Samuel 22:33-37 (Ministry Resource Book page 2) It is God who arms me with strength (my strong refuge), and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You make your saving help my shield;   our help has made[b] me great. You provide a broad path for my feet,   so that my ankles do not give way.
God knows our bodies and how they will respond to any certain exercise, we just need to seek God and let Him show each of us what is best for our individual needs.  For David to “bend a bow of bronze” and be “surefooted as a deer”, “safely treading along mountain heights”, it took training and preparation. We too, need to be prepared for our daily living and the things God calls us to do.
Our bodies need to be strong:
Balance: protects us from injuries and we need good core strength along with upper and lower body strength to have good balance
Protect from injuries: Stronger muscles and bones can keep us from serious injury when we fall or have an accident
Improve cardiovascular health: Moving and strengthening, so much science here
Better sense of well being: making good choices for our bodies just makes us feel good about ourselves and life!
Clothes fit better: Total body fat remains relatively constant with age but its distribution changes. More accumulates in the thighs and less in the abdomen, so “middle age spread” is not really due to increased fatty tissue. It probably occurs because muscle tone is lost, producing the characteristic sagging of the abdomen.(1)   It seems like fat comes to the surface when we lose muscle tone. My own story on this: got out of habit of doing strengthening exercises and although weight remained about the same, my waistline was bigger with lots of extra fat making my pants fit tighter. I couldn’t understand how this could be with my weight the same (lost muscle, gained fat: muscle is more dense so adds more weight AND consumes more calories!), but this statement gave me clarity that I had lost muscle and not  gained as much fat, but with less muscle to hold it in.  After being consistent for several months in strengthening exercises, moving more and cleaning up my eating (I still eat the “bad” foods but in smaller portion and have increased the good food with more color and roughage), my waistline is almost back to “normal”!
