Galatea the Nereid (Sea Nymph) and her Love Triangle
Western Art has a love affair with ancient Greece and Rome. Many different myths and historical (*cough*semi-historical*cough*) events.
In ancient Greek Mythology, there were two women named Galatea. One was a woman who was carved out of marble and brought to life, and the other was one of the fifty Nereides. Both women were to be the subjects of paintings, sculptures, and operas of different artistic periods because both women are at the center of love stories. Although their love stories differ, love stories are an enduring tale and are something that fascinate people throughout the ages.
This little blog post will focus on Galatea the Nereid.
Daughter of Nereus, the 'Old Man of the Sea,' and the Oceanid Doris. She is one of 50 sisters who lived with their father in his grotto in the Aegean Sea. Thetis, mother of Achilles, and Amphitrite who was Poseidon's queen and mother of Triton, were two of her more famous sisters. Galatea means Milk-White and she was a goddess of calm seas. Like her sisters, she was a protector of sailors and the sea's bounty, and like her sisters she was beautiful. She frequented the shores of Sicily and caught the eye of Polyphemus. Polyphemus has a legacy of his own right. A cyclops, a man-eater, and was blinded by Odysseus after trapping him in his home. This son of Poseidon and a nymph who was the child of Phorcys named Thoosa. Her name is only given to us by the poet Homer, but that would make her a sibling to Echidna, the Hesperian Dragon, the Gorgons, and the Graeae. Which gives us a better understanding of Polyphemus' portrayal in the early myths.
Polyphemus loved her, and gave her cheeses, milk, and played the pipes for her. But she spurned his love because she had fallen in love with another. Acis was a handsome Sicilian youth whose father was Pan and whose mother was a river nymph. He would mock Polyphemus's love and one day while Galatea and Acis lay in a grassy field beneath Mount Etna he took a bolder from the mountain and crushed the youth's head. From the blood that poured out the grieving nymph turned him into the River Acis, and him into the god of the river with horns and a blue face.
This version of the tale was recounted by Ovid in book three of Metamorphoses. But even later, we get tales of Polyphemus and Galatea's love. Where he is able to woo her with music and lure her to Sicily to be with him. This is thought to try to explain why there was a shrine to her on the shores. So the story of a Cyclops tied to the land and a sea nymph who couldn't leave the water's love was the explanation that Philoxenus of Cythera came up with as an explanation.
They also have a child together named Galatos who was to become the ancestor of the Gauls.
In art, around the Baroque period, the love triangle between Galatea, Polyphemus, and Acis picked up popularity in operas and artistic representations and the popularity would continue through the Romantic and Academic periods along with other Greek Myths. In statues a way to tell the nymph from her counterpart is she is often depicted with sea pearls in her hair, a garland of shells and pearls adorning her, billowing scarves, tridents, or dolphins.
One of my favorites is from Gustave Moreau, Where he doesn't look deeply into the love triangle, but instead focuses more on the beauty and the beast aspect of Ovid's tale and we get some beautiful pieces. The movement Moreau was part of is known as Symbolism, and I personally find the colors, the composition, and the details to be very compelling and expressive of the stories they are trying to tell in their art.
Anyway. I hope you like the story of Galatea, and looking at some of the art. I hope to do the story about the other Galatea, aka the statue that came to life soon.

So I ended up falling for Polyphemus in Hades 2. (He sounds just like Ignarius! I have a type, OK!!)
I did a Greek myth deep dive and found some interesting facts about him, like how he has a crush on a sea nymph named Galatea. And I thought, wouldn't it be a funny idea if they were actually secretly dating.
But THEN I found there's some versions where they DO get together and that just added even more fuel on the shipping fire.
I've already been working on a oneshot fic of these two and it'sa gonna be a spicy one~

GALATEA /1896/ by GUSTAVE MOREAU
This artwork shows a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses where the cyclops, Polyphemus, experiences one-sided love for the Nereid sea nymph, Galatea. Galatea loves the shepherd Acis instead, and he is unattainable to her. Galatea lies on a seaweed-covered bed with the two figures encircled by underwater blooming plants.
The tale recounts, "Here is a terrible giant who loves a beautiful nymph." The contrast between the light complexion of Galatea's lying figure, symbolizing how out of reach she is, and the dark hues of desolate Polyphemus, who melds into the backdrop, is striking
The piece highlights the contrast between attractiveness and unattractiveness, brightness, and darkness. The luminous body of Galatea enhances her ethereal beauty. Moreau's precise focus on nature is evident in the complex features of the nearby underwater flora and coral, influenced by his research in marine botany.
This is the second piece Moreau did of this subject, the first being an oil on wood painting from 1880. Moreau was very fond of this myth and had two photographs of works by other artists depicting this same subject hanging in his living room. These include Raphael’s “Triumph of Galatea” and Sebastiano del Piombo’s “Polyphemus”.

I adapted my Poppy Playtime OC Millicent Legrand to the Space Rider AU of @onyxonline
I plan on maybe doing a drawing of her friend Diana in the future, but first I'll move on to Aurora's other outfits before starting another drawing.
I'm not used to drawing anthropomorphic characters, so she might look a little strange (I think I looked at the drawing for too long because now something about it bothers me and I don't know what it is).
Full name: Millicent Colette Legrand
Preferred name: Aurora/Venus
Age: 20 - 25
Pronouns: Any
Gender: Female (Genderfluid)
Sexuality: Pansexual, ambiamory
Height: 165 cm (5'5") - 185 cm (6'1") (changing)
Species: Fennec Fox/Nymph
About Aurora:
Aurora is the crown princess of the planet Galatea. Her job is to ensure the safety of her planet and ensure that other planets' ecosystems can recover after a disaster.
Her mother, Queen Cybele, currently holds the title of “Mother Nature,” which is passed on to Aurora upon completion of her training and studies.
Although she is not a Rider fighting against the Cult of the Prototype, she cares deeply about other planets and will help them (and their ecosystem) recover after a major disaster.
Aurora might not be good with close Combat, but she has enough experience with magic that it makes up for it. (She does her best in hand-to-hand combat training, although she probably needs a few extra sessions.)
Aurora is a sweet pacifist that is willing to see the best in everyone. She is very respectful of other people and loves learning more about planets and their traditions.
While she behaves elegantly and gracefully towards her subjects or in her princely duties, in private she is very lively and cheerful. She loves taking care of the royal garden and even talks to the flowers when no one is looking.
She is currently doing her training on a spaceship while visiting other planets from time to time. She is very dutiful and tries to make a good impression when visiting other planets, as she is the representative of Galatea.
She doesn't like confrontation and tries to settle disputes rather than escalate things. But don't underestimate her because she doesn't hesitate to act when a fight breaks out.
When Aurora needs to fight, she much prefers to stay at a distance, as she is more suited to ranged attacks than close combat. When defense is needed, she creates a wall of thorny vines and heals her injured teammates.
She usually helps with the clean up after fights, such as capturing the cultists.
Power Capabilities:
Aurora is directly connected to the natural world and thus can communicate, influence, manipulate and control nature: all living beings and plants and natural phenomena, such as the weather and geology of the Earth, and the matter and energy of which all these things are composed. She can survive in any natural environment on different planets. She can control animals and plants and mimic their abilities and forms.
Because Aurora can communicate with nature, she becomes instantly familiar with her surroundings, the connection is so deep that the earth can respond to her emotions and desires (blossoming with flowers and calming weather when happy, making skies stormy or cause earthquakes when angry, shifting the landscape to gain the advantage in a fight, etc.)
Aurora can purify, heal and generally influence the health of nature, and considering the fact that they're helping the environment, plants and animals act favorably towards her. They have access to every living species of animal and can also draw strength from them and acquire their abilities. Nature obeys Aurora's every command and operate on a "hive mind", meaning Aurora can control an entire army of animals.
Power Limitations:
Control, discipline, and restraint are extremely important. Unconscious, emotion-influenced, impulsive, or reckless use of this power can be catastrophic.
Since the user's emotions affect nature directly, control is essential.
Distance, mass, precision, etc. depend upon of the knowledge, skill, and strength of the user, and their power's natural limits.

ⵌ YOU MUST BE THE WATER I DRINK..
SENDER Reader (fem terms used) RECIPITENT Fyodor Dostoevsky (BSD) CONTENTS His cruel ways were all you ever knew of. His sudden vanishing tugs at the strings of the heart you swore to surrender for him. NOTE reader x canon, angst, death of husband, emotional abuse, reader is too infatuated with fyo to blame him COMPANY Nymphs Finding the Head of Orpheus
Three weeks have passed since you last saw Nikolai. Four weeks have passed since you received the news of your late husband.
Fyodor, who continued to 'haunt' you even after death. You dare not distance yourself from what he once treasured. Yourself.
It was difficult to come to terms with the fact your husband had died.
Furthermore, it was difficult to come to such conclusion after being informed that no remains had been found except for that torn arm Gogol did not give you. Perhaps knowing you'd come to hold it and cry out for him every waking hour. You reasoned Gogol knew you were hurting inside. Of course, your public demeanour never changed from what Fyodor left.
You were what remained of Fyodor's perfect wife. You owe it all to him for having made you into the perfect model of what a good spouse should be.
It did not take him that long to mould you into what you have become now. A dutiful wife there to tend to his every need.
You'd peek your head out from the kitchen hearing him come home from work, almost unsure whether today had been a good day or a bad day. His reaction to your persona of a clingy housewife being able to easily anger him if he had been frustrated that day.
Still, he was there to correct you. Fyodor was there to take your hand into his. You remember vividly how they'd feel against yours. Cold, frail and dangerous compared to your delicate, smooth hands. You knew what those hands of his were capable of doing. The countless men and women who met their demise with a single tap of his finger.
The undeniable fear that bubbled in the pit of your stomach was possibly what made you stay with him for so long. A mixture of both elation and trepidation that urged you to see how long this will go. How long will it be before he replaces you, if he should ever?
This game of knowing you'd never be enough for the man you married yet never daring disobey his every command, at his feet with every beck and call, the threat of an imminent demise delivered by the man you call your love was something you believed to be almost prophetic.
You weren't the girl you used to be.
You heard many remark. You knew so yourself. You had given yourself to your husband to change you as he pleased. Rid you of all things he disliked and fill you with traits he found desirable.
You were his Galatea, in essence. Fyodor wished for you to be subservient and deferential to none but him. ''Your tongue'', as he'd remark, ''will be the death of you''.
There was no doubt in your heart that Fyodor was one to seek out good looks. Even so, you know deep down he wouldn't have wed you if he thought you as 'ugly'.
Conveniently, you were everything he needed in terms of appearance. A beautiful wife by his side. It was all down to how you behaved. He wasted no time in fixing what needed tending.
Through it all, you not once saw what about his acts could be deemed as hurtful. In fact, you felt guilty for taking up so much of his time. What was it about you that made you not yet worthy of his committed love?
To you, Fyodor was perfect, and that meant you should be too.
Although you were sheltered in your shared home, you still made yourself familiar with a few of his colleagues. Nikolai Gogol being one of the few.
When Fyodor would be away for an exceptionally long time, Gogol would be to one to pop in (from nowhere) to keep you company. The jester's company was welcomed warmly by you. His loud and eccentric personality made you wonder how Fyodor got along with him.
Gogol would ensure your safety and well-being almost on the daily. You could never get bored of his presence, always having some trick to show you.
One particular night you spent with Nikolai, you'd been smiling and laughing so much that the corners of your mouth had begun to ache. That simple, human result had been long forgotten by you. You didn't know why it hurt to reminisce on it now.
The last day you seen your husband was him leaving the house earlier than usual. He hadn't even woken you with kisses as he usually would. He had snuck out of bed, in fact, sly as a fox to escape unnoticed.
When he saw you standing like a deer in the headlights on the stairs, your white mini night dress - the straps hanging low on your shoulders, your hair frizzed from a deep sleep and your hand balled up into a fist rubbing at your eye.
He gave your puffy lips a sorrowful gaze, despite the distance. Your pink lips curling into a pout seeing him leave. Something felt different.
" Up so early, princess? "
Fyodor's hand held on lightly to the knob, purple eyes dimly lit by the rising sun, the orange rays illuminating through curtains and invading through the open door.
" Where are you going? " Your voice soft and pitiful. It sounded like a plea for him to stay rather than a question. Fyodor bit back a laugh. At least, you remember him doing so. Your recollection of it was hazy.
" You'll wait for me, won't you? As always. " Avoiding your question, he turned his back to you, muttering a distinct 'I love you' before closing the door shut after him.
He knew you loved him back.
He didn't need to wait to hear it.
He died knowing you love him, even if you hadn't said it.
You'll die loving him, too.

More p3r livebloggin/shitpost thoughts. Sorry for the crunchy pictures, literally I'm just too fried to import pics from my PS4.
Because I'm the way that I am, I noticed the paintings hung in the Hierophant/Lovers boss shadow building are real paintings. One on the left is a crop of Liberty Leading the People by Eugene Delacroix, and on the right is Le Cyclops by Odilon Redon. IDK why they picked these paintings because. Why would a painting of the French Revolution be in this kind of hotel but I have some theories?
The hotel they're in is pointed out to have a French title and modeled after French design, for some reason. Les Champs de Fleurs is pointed out in the game meaning a field of flowers. Now -
Liberty Leading the People is a painting about the July revolution that overthrew the French monarchy. The boss event is in July but there's more -
Le Cyclops is about the play(s) about Polyphemus (the cyclops from the Odyssey that Odysseus blinds and tricks) and his love of the sea nymph Galatea, and the drama that ensues. There's many versions of the play but in classic fashion most of them don't end well, with Galatea rejecting him in favor of someone else, and Polyphemus killing them both. This painting in particular is basically Polyphemus creeping on Galatea as she sleeps on a hill of flowers.
I THINK these paintings are meant to represent the reverse hierophant and lovers. Overthrowing of the corrupt hierarchy, and rejection of choice. Also French.
There's one more painting but I have NO IDEA what painting it is
So many paintings have winged babies in them I can't go through them all 😭
Oh yeah linguistics bonus - the boss event takes place on 7/7, aka Tanabata. Some might know it as Japanese Valentine's day. Story goes Orihime and Hikoboshi, lovers separated by duty and the milky way, can meet during this festival as a flock of magpies make them a bridge over the milky way. Milky way, in Japanese is Amanogawa 天の川, literally "river of heaven". An older version is also sometimes used, ginka 銀河, derived from Chinese meaning "silver river". And here is where we get the name of Shirakawa Blvd. 白川...... White River Blvd.
I THINK that's why they named the hotel Champs de Fleurs. The classic Greek mythology of heaven is Elysium, basically a field of flowers in the sky. Kinda as the companion to the river in the sky. Not to mention it's a reference to the famous French street Champs Élysées, literally "Elysian Fields"
Imagine me standing in front of a conspiracy wall covered with red string. That's me all the time with p3
Ok back to shitposting
This is the most emotion I've seen the Mc make all game so far 😂 7 meals back to back will do that to ya. Name I picked was Dank Hour, so I guess it kinda fits. Munchies will do that
Those are her hooves!!
OH MY GOD. HOLY SHIT HANG ON
These puppets are massive
Gameplay thoughts -
- I miss the fatigue mechanic ok. Now there's NOTHING stopping me from spending five hours in Tartarus getting massively over leveled. Also miss it thematically and an excuse to go drink Edogawa's potions for courage boosts
- RIP shuffle time. The new one is good with the variety of cards but man make them fly around again that was fun
- Tartarus looks good. I was skeptical of how they're gonna make a randomly generated dungeon look good on current consoles but. It looks really good and plays well. And I love the added bonus bosses.
- I do miss being able to actually stealth around with different weapons and hunting rare shadows with a bow though. The unstable formations in p3p around half and new moons were also something I wish they incorporated, but maybe it'll come up later? Because the new Tartarus environment would be perfect for some stealth mechanics.
- I don't know if this is because I'm p3 Georg and an outlier that should not be counted but I'm playing on merciless and it's SO EASY???? I'm almost to August and I've ONLY died three times. I'm playing with a 3 people party as a debuff because it's too easy otherwise.
- ailments kinda work different than they used to and I still haven't figured out... What they really do yet. Distress used to guarantee criticals, now I'm not sure what it does???
- the theurgies are broken as hell wtf. This is too much power. I was really hoping they'd bring P2/dds style fusion spells back
General thoughts:
- they still haven't invented weather yet lmao rain was invented in 2011 I see
- Pleasantly surprised by the added cutscenes and hangout events in the dorm. They're actually pretty thoughtful and reflects on the character growth throughout the game instead of just ill humored filler (cough p4 cough). They really nailed it this time.
- Aigis trying to talk to plants and bugs and the meaning of lifeeeee 😭
- the club is simultaneous hilarious and terrifying in the way that they didn't animate the dancers. I get why, but it's so funny. It's just a room of statues with blank faces. At least there's more than five people there
- there's two poster of the Foo Fighters in the station outskirts. Why them specifically? Also if the movies at the theatre have hidden meanings I WILL find them.
- Mitsuru just stands like she's posing for the camera all the time and her idle AND angry animation being a hair flip is so funny. Hello. Flips hair. Come to the command room after dinner we have new mission. Flips hair. I'm going to execute Mr Ekoda for his despicable inaction. Flips hair
- Idk where else to put this but that scene on the roof with the watermelon hits different when you know a watermelon that size in Japan is, depending on the season and economy, at least $50. Junpei really splurged there to cheer up Ken 🥺. That entire scene was great. Why DON'T we watch Akihiko punch the melon open, what an inspired suggestion
- speaking of fruit, if you look at the care package Akihiko got from his parents there are mangoes in there. Mangoes that size and color are like $30 each.
- the dorm. Could be modeled better. Idk if it's the lighting or the textures but... It looks unfinished.
- they kept the little overworld icon that travels between locations to not go over the bridge even though it'd be a shorter route. Nice. There is an instance where it does use the bridge, when you first go to the police station and Junpei is following you around. Also very nice touch. Whichever dev is responsible for this detail I see and appreciate your work 🫡
- was not expecting even the NPCs to be fully voice acted. They're all so charming!
- at the beginning of the game it tells you to put your things away in the closet. Highlighted. But we can't open or interact with the closet in any way??? Why was closet highlighted??? Did the game do that just to call us gay??
- and also where's my silly outfit???? Everyone has gotten butler and maid outfits except the mc. Where's my goofy outfit I want one too.... Where's the clown outfit from the dancing game.... Where's the maid outfit.... Once my pc arrives I'll absolutely be installing the emo mod. Let my besties reveal their true 2009 forms

A Deep Sea Idyll by Herbert James Draper
The painting loosely combines themes from two sources. Firstly the story from ancient Greek mythology in which the sculptor Pygmalion fell in love with Galatea, one of his works, who with Aphrodite’s intervention, miraculously came to life. The story captivated artists and writers of the nineteenth-century as it provided them with subject matter infused with mystery, romance and classicism. Artists as diverse as Burne-Jones, Gérôme, Normand and Rodin, and authors such as Shaw, Tennyson, and Browning, all created their own individual interpretations on the theme. In Draper’s painting he has inverted the story and reversed the sexes, and it is the beautiful nymph who has risen from the depths and serves as the protagonist, her hair crowned with a wreath of seaweed and coral, as she offers a shell filled with pearls in supplication to the static figurehead carved into the wooden prow of the ship.
The painting is also suggestive of Hans Christian Anderson’s tale, The Little Mermaid, published in April 1837, in which a mermaid falls in love with a prince and is willing to give up her life in the ocean to gain a human soul and follow her love onto land. Tragically, as in Draper’s interpretation, the relationship cannot be fulfilled and the beautiful hero and heroine are destined to remain apart.

This painting illustrates the myth of Acis and Galatea. The sea nymph Galatea was in love with a young shepherd, Acis. His jealous rival, the Cyclops Polyphemus, crushed him with a stone.
Heartbroken, Galatea prayed to the gods that her lover Acis be transformed into an immortal river spirit, to bathe in every day. Today, a river is named after him near Etna.

"Galatea" - 2023. Concept, model and photographer: Psyché Ophiuchus Body painting: Yoann Lossel
This series is called 'Galatea', and was created in collaboration with Yoann Lossel, who did the bodypainting. It is a visual exploration of the symbiosis between nature and art. Inspired by the nymph of Greek mythology, it is a reflection on our relationship with nature. A confrontation between what is ancient and organic, like the oxidised copper statue, and what is vulnerable and fragile, like the human essence and threatened nature.
By juxtaposing the immutable figure of Galatea with the dynamic and changing environment of the forest, we invite the viewer to reflect on the duality between the ephemeral and the permanent, between human creation and the immutable force of nature.
