My biggest quarrel with more recent Les Mis soundtracks is the absence of Gavroche’s full version of ‘Little people’ from the 1985 original cast recording.
I think it shows so much of his character and I love how he so easily gathers a crowd of people who are singing the chorus along with him. Obviously I love how Gavroche’s theme is scattered throughout all the other songs but I want him to have his song back. If it isn’t obvious, I love Gavroche and he deserves more screen/show time. He is a representative of all the gamin and children of Les Mis (and of Paris) and that is one of my favourite parts of the musical and the book.
Petition to get the extended version of Little People back sign here -> x…………..

gavroche during little people in the 25th anniversary concert is actually so fucking funny
the wink, the vibrato with “INSPECTOR JAVERT”, his overall vibe is just immaculate
like javert was fooled by a little kid who probably would fall over if he were to pick up a gun i would also jump over a bridge if that happened to me

something else I was thinking was that they didn’t include the full extent of fantine's abject misery and exploitation. in both the musical and movie, she sells what she has and then sells her hair. in the book, her two front teeth are ripped out by a dentist to pay for what she believes to be cosette’s medicine
#like. fuck if I'll ever forget that#she may also sell her hair I don't remember#the movie using a coffin for the scene before I dreamed a dream was a damn good choice#but I don't think any adaptation reached what the book was saying#valjean actually went back to jail for almost a year after turning himself in#I kept reading being like 'when is he going to rescue cossete? she's been there far too long already!'#the plot of the two little boys who were forced out onto the street who gavroche looked after for a while#hugo rly got it. in a lot of ways#the long passages detailing the value of human life and the alleviation of human suffering#compared to a tyrranical government and law enforcement agency#the understanding that treating people like shit is corrosive#gavroche and cosette being traumatized from neglect even#and like. punishment doesn't cause people to be better only more suspicious and angry and hurt#the idea of change being inspired by goodness instead and internal discipline being more effective than external punitive measures#internal change being inspired by kindness I mean#the compassion he asks the reader to feel for people who aren't perfect but who have been ruthlessly used by the society they live in#and the relentless desperation of poverty#the anger in those passages where he castigates hippie college students for uselessly philosophizing about the meaning of life#while there were people starving around him#some of the passages read startlingly modern#I should reread it sometime#cor.txt#ask to tag#mouth trauma ?

Sorry if this question is random but opinions on Gavroche? As a les mis book reader he was my FAVORITE character!!! Wanna know ur thoughts:3
ohhh boy. gavroche. there's a reason my tag for him is 'the boy, the myth, the legend'
fun fact is that gavroche was one of my OG blorbos. idk if you were around for the noodle boi war in mid 2020, but I literally inserted him into a roleplay as an NPC because I thought he was that fucking neat. there was a period of time where if anyone mentioned he died I would threaten to smash their kneecaps. god why did anyone put up with 2020-early 2021 me. I probably latched onto him so hard because I have a terrible relationship with my own younger brother and I wanted a replacement lmao
anyways my opinions on gavroche are that he's fucking swag. rare political elementary schooler vibes. great character to personify the children of the streets AND he's a fucking badass with some of the best one liners in the entire book. if I met him in real life it's 50/50 whether I'd adore him or want to punt him into the sun (I just don't like kids in that age range in general they weird me out) but as a character he's literally *chefs kiss*. also he would start out saying 'pogchamp' ironically but he'd totally fucking start to do it unironically too and get the whole abc/patron minette to say it too.

here are my notes from last night's Les Mis performance on West End (mostly Grantaire related whoopsie)
i have way too much shit to say I still haven't processed my emotions so bear with me
Gavroche saying “Aye aye governor” to Javert right before Stars! This kid is d( ̄◇ ̄)b💯ᵖᵉʳᶠᵉᶜᵗ
Grantaire staying carefully away from Enjolras during Red and Black… before slapping the ever living hell out of Enjolras’ butt??? Sir??? Where did that confidence come from???
Gavroche being Grantaire's son, and Enjolras trying to also be a figurehead for him (does he want to be included? Is he doubtful of R's capacity as a parent? You decide!)
Everyone roasting Marius (even someone shouting “Shut up Marius”)! Beautiful! Applauded!!!
Cosette rushing to help Éponine off the floor after Thénardier slaps her.. Then holding her hands as they stare in each other's eyes **lesbians intensifies**
Grantaire being drunk af during One Day More, but taking a step to be seen by Enjolras, then Enjolras giving him a smile and a pat on the shoulder before going in front of him!!! I can't!!! 🥺
Grantaire trying to help but also keeping himself clearly separated from the rest of the boys during Here Upon These Stones
Gavroche being a little shit™
GAVROCHE EXPOSING JAVERT, GRANTAIRE GIVING HIM HIS BOTTLE SO HE CAN PUT THE KID ON A TABLE AND GAVROCHE DOWNING IT'S CONTENT AND R JUST RUFFLING HIS HAT
Gavroche and Grantaire being the first ones to find Éponine and Marius in A Little Fall of Rain, and Grantaire holding him the whole time
Enjolras going to comfort Marius when Éponine dies and Grantaire keeping him from doing it so Gavroche can go instead
Gavroche giving Marius Éponine's hat 😭😭
Enjolras trying to go and comfort Grantaire during his existential crisis in Drink with Me, but him running away from Enjolras before Gavroche practically tackles him in a back hug on the wall!!!
Everyone looking at Grantaire when Gavroche rushes over the barricade
Enjolras running to catch Gavroche when he's shot then giving him to Grantaire and looking absolutely destroyed
Grantaire yelling “You bastards” during the barricade call
Even after the final battle begins, Grantaire still stays back, he's not ready to start fighting yet. But then he sees Enjolras and he be running to be shot too
Grantaire’s actor's sleeve got caught on a piece of the set so his arms were in the most awkward position for the Bring Him Home reprise
Enjolras being brought out in a cart, Javert blessing Gavroche’s dead body before signaling to a police man to put him on a cart with Enjolras
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables! Enjolras and Grantaire being next to each other, then face to face, THEY'RE NARRATIVE FOILS
Valjean saying “must-a” in an almost Italian accent in Who Am I reprise…  twice
May I present M. Thénardier “I wish I would've married your sister” and his wife “I wish you were dead”
Enjolras and Grantaire holding Gavroche between them at the end of the show, Enjolras was accepted as a figurehead and Grantaire gets his man they're in paradise I'm not sobbing you are

TOUR THOUGHTS
Saw the Les Miserables Tour at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto on May 21 2024; here are my thoughts (Long read, sorry I have a lot of feelings)
Prologue/Look Down/Valjean's Soliloquy
We got like, holographic waves crashing and the men are rowing a boat LIKE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE it's awesome
Oh my god the pipes on the background actors were so good. THE SUN IS STRONG ITS HOT AS HEEELLL BELOW
I miss Javert's stupid guard hat. Was bareheaded as he gave Valjean his yellow ticket
PETIT GERVAIS?????????? Valjean steals a little boy's coin when he's roaming the countryside 😭
Randy Jeter as the Bishop blew me away. Not just his voice but his acting was FANTASTIC every single movement was like. I am an old bishop. This is how an old bishop moves. Idk idk it was really good
Nick Cartell did a great job w Valjean overall, but I totally loved him as pre-MsurM Valjean the most. He acts like a feral animal, grabbing the wine out of the nun's hands and the bread from the priest all hunched over and practically snarling - very very cool and awesome
At the End of the Day
Not a negative but when we went to At the End of the Day there was very minimal lighting and my first thought was Oh no the lighting broke hope they fix it and we don't have to have a brief intermission but then when they went 'At the end of the day there's another day dawning' the lights went up and I was like OHHHHHHHHHHHH so that's just me not understanding lighting direction
Foreman killed it, so did all of the factory workers I love all the interactions and ad-libbing in the background it makes me so happy to see
Every time I saw a tall graceful ensemble member I was like '"That's Kyle Adams" and 8/10 times I was right. Otherwise it was Daniel Gerard Bittner
I Dreamed A Dream
OKKKK VOCALS???? Haley Dortch has such a beautiful, clear, emotional sound and she left not a dry eye in the house. Literally the second intermission hit my parents and myself were like. Holy shit dude what about that Fantine
I got her autograph after the show and she was so so sweet 🥺 She accidentally messed up her signature and had to redo it and was apologising to me and I was like GIRL you brought the house down you could stab me right now and I'd be like 'Thanks have a good one'
Lovely Ladies / Fantine's Arrest
Bamatabois (David Andino) was a standout performance, really chewed the scenery and I adored every second he was on stage (Plus his costume was fantastic)
The other girls defending Fantine 🥺
I like that after the police show up and they basically arrest all of the ladies and pimps, regular well-off citizens come out to witness Valjean defending Fantine from Javert. Thought it was a nice touch
Fantine's Death
My first and only cry of the evening, Haley Dortch no one does it like you
The Confrontation
If you've heard me talk about the confrontation you'll know that I absolutely hate the new chain choreography, HOWEVER. I really really liked it this time. Preston in particular gave it a lot of physicality that I enjoyed
Nick Cartell is a little guy and I don't really believe that his Valjean managed to knock out Preston's Javert
For some reason the percussion was really loud and I could barely hear the vocals so I don't have many thoughts on them
Master of the House / Waltz of Treachery
MATT CROWLE YOU WILL ALWAYS BE FAMOUS
Both Thenardiers were fantastic, not a crazy amount of ad-libbing but when they did they made it count ("BYE, BAGUETTE")
Madame in particular was hilarious
Master of the House is very busy in a good way, everywhere you look interesting things are happening. Another number where the ensemble shines and you can tell everyone is having a blast
The Bargain was funny as hell, Thenardier tells Cosette to die in his arms and she goes limp when he's saying she's 'often been ill'
Valjean gives Cosette Catherine!
Look Down / The Robbery
Gavroche was super charismatic and confident, really great child actor (Milo Maharlika)
Eponine tosses Marius' book across the stage and he goes "I like the way you always ... tease 😐" They're such cute friends together
After Enjolras and the boys are done their preaching Enjolras gets stopped by a policeman and is told off 😭
During the robbery Montparnasse keeps Marius away by brandishing his little knife at him which I thought was cute
Also! Montparnasse is the only member of Thenardier's gang to escape during the Robbery!!! Which is a nice Brick reference
After Thenardier's 'In the absense of a victim' spiel he does this exact pose
Tumblr media
Gavroche's little 'Clear the streets' 🫡moment is so cute
Stars
God I love Preston Truman Boyd
His Javert is so stalwart and reserved and dedicated, he's kind of robocop and it really really works, and you get to see just a smidge of vulnerability peek out in this song
ABC Cafe / Red and Black
I DON'T REMEMBER A LOT bare with me
Grantaire was absolutely the standout. Slapped Marius' butt with his coat. Stuck his wine bottle dick in Enjolras' face. Offered Combeferre a sip of his wine (who reluctantly accepted). Blew a kiss at Enjolras
Kyle Adams physicality is probably my favourite aspect of his Grantaire - he moves very assuredly, like a cat, in a way that is like okay he's drunk but he's so used to being drunk that his stumbling is more like dancing. I remember reading a fic that described Grantaire's movements in a similar way and I wonder if that was one of the fics Kyle took inspiration from?
OOH they did the wine bottle keep-away thing with Grantaire and Marius which I didn't know they still did so that was exciting
J.T Wood is such a cute Joly I love his voice
In Do You Hear the People Sing Grantaire grabs a gun and holds it at arms-length like it has cooties before handing it off to another student
Combeferre waves the flag both times (Here and in One Day More) and I'm not sure if it's always Combeferre who does that or if it's because Andrew Marks Maughan is clearly the most physically strong of the Barricade Boys
In My Life / A Heart Full of Love
Delaney Guyer is a really good Cosette in that she has a gorgeous voice and also has a lot of personality and actually reacts to things going on around her
Marius (who was played by Christopher James Tamayo for this performance) is such a cute little nerd. You can see him try to figure out what he's going to do, then he throws a rock at Cosette's window and kind of cringes at the noise - he's so unsure of himself and awkward
Cosette is very excited that he's here and closes the window right away, which prompts Marius' 'I'm doing everything all wrong!' until she reappears downstairs and they get to be cute dorks in love
Attack on Rue Plumet
I don't remember a lot but I DO remember that Eponine was really good here
When Valjean is like 'Tomorrow we'll away' Cosette goes 'WHAT? NO!'
David Andino is so good as Babet he is a chronic scene stealer at this point
One Day More
If you know Another thing about me you know I hate the One Day More box-step but it actually did not bug me this time. They put Grantaire next to Enjolras for the marching portion which is cute
On My Own
Holy shit Mya Rena Hunter delivered the most heartbreaking and powerful rendition of this I've ever heard
The Barricade
Loved Feuilly in his little part
Javert is a good spy. If I didn't know the plot of Les Mis I would've been like Holy shit that's Javert? Crazy. I love him drawing the 'plans' he'd overheard into the ground with a stick
Gavroche flipping Javert off >>>>>
Buff Combeferre is one of the two to drag Javert away to be tied up lol
A Little Fall of Rain
The only version of ALFoR that actually made me feel something
Marius and Eponine get a lot of time to be cute together before the barricade actually notices that she's dying - and Gavroche is the first to notice and gets a front row seat to her death which is heartbreaking
The First Attack
Grantaire's "AND SO THE WAR WAS WON!" was sooo scathingly sarcastic
Javert waited, like, 30 seconds to leave after Valjean freed him, with his back almost against the barrel of Valjean's gun as if he were hoping to be shot
When the gun went off the entire barricade abruptly snapped their heads to look at Valjean and the audience laughed 😭
Telling Valjean 'Well done' for shooting a tied up hostage is a strange choice
Drink With Me
I still hate 'For certain as the eagle flies' I think it's the dumbest line in the entire musical
Grantaire's part was very grand - His voice has like noticeably changed at this point in the musical to give it a sort of hoarse hopeless quality to it which absolutely hits you in the feels
Enjolras comforted him and I swear Grantaire let his hand linger on his cheek for a few seconds longer than normal before pushing him away
Gavroche hugged Grantaire from behind and Grantaire couldn't even turn around at first because he was so distraught and kind of blindly reached for him 😭
Chris Tamayo's Marius is such a poor little meow meow
Bring Him Home
Absolutely jaw-dropping performance from Nick Cartell
He sings Bring Him Home like it's a lullaby - which it's supposed to be
I don't exaggerate when I say that the applause went on for about a minute straight, and was the loudest of the night by far
Death of Gavroche / The Final Battle
Oh poor thang
Grantaire near the end of Gavroche's singing was turned away facing the audience like he knew Gav was going to die and couldn't bear to watch 🥺
Later on in the final battle Grantaire spends most of the time next to Gavroche's body in like a catatonic state
The SPOTLIGHTS representing BULLETS as Les Amis died almost made me lose it
Grantaire dies last, I'm sure he said something before he started climbing the barricade but I couldn't hear it 😭He and Enjolras still have their moment over Marius' body
The Sewer
Javert comes across Enjolras' cart-carried body (Still hate the cart but I can learn to appreciate it) and looks a bit uncomfortable
Then he stumbles upon Gavroche's corpse, kneels, and does the sign of the cross over him
Almost made me cry ngl
DOG EATS DOG WAS SO GOOD I LOVED IT
Javert looked like he wanted to shoot Valjean as he walked away with Marius
Javert's Suicide
HOOOOOOLYYYY SHIIIIITTTTT
It was so good
Preston Truman Boyd you will always be famous I fully believe that Javert had completely lost his mind at this point in the play
I don't have many thoughts on the rest but I loved Marius and Cosette reading Valjean's confession as he walked away with Fantine - and the Bishop hugging him as he arrives in heaven
Also Kyle Adams as Major Domo mincing about the stage in The Wedding was an absolute delight
Am very sleepy now but overall 10/10 I love this cast so much

me and my friends are having a game night tonight
that got me thinking Les Amis game night
courf always suggests spin the bottle
enjolras *hates* that he's good at monopoly
bahorel and eponine are the people who have flipped the monopoly board the most
gavroche is nearly always banker and gets incredibly into the roll (jehan has many top hats and you beassured they are used for monopoly)
when playing charades or pictionary the triviumate can not team up (they can read eachothers minds)
this also means that jbm can not team up either for the same reason
and Marius and combeferre can't team up or there will be a murder and ferre is not the one who will be dying this time
the board game operation terrifies joly they've all agreed not to play it
cosette likes cluedo a little too much to the point it kinda scares people
combeferre is shit at trivial pursuit unless it's about something of his interest Vs grantaire is incredible at it
feuilly mainly attends the games night for the food and the 'good' vibes and the company poor man needs a break
twister is chaos and bossuet broke his arm and managed to break enjolras nose (again)

I took some time and translated one of the anecdotes I'd written on here, since people keep putting my german posts through google translate in the notes and it makes my eyes bleed
It's a small story of a situation I got myself into while I was travelling through Prague. It was winter, I was 19, and completely disoriented on my way through eastern Europe. That day I'd made plans to meet some folks for breakfast at a café. But me being me I had somehow managed to type the wrong café into google maps, which sent me marching into the wrong part of town.
I burst into this unassuming little café somewhere in Prague like I was a Roman looking for the last unoccupied village in Galicia, walked through the rows of tables, couldn't find anybody. Opened google maps and promptly realized my mistake.
Unfortunately, by that point I'd caught the eye of the waiter. Some young, skinny guy with a pastel tshirt and a bow tie, looking vaguely like an overwhelmingly gay youtuber straight out of 2016. Good for him honestly.
He came flying in my direction, asking if there was anything he could help me with.
This is the point where I should briefly mention what I looked like at the time, since that somehow manages to make this story so much worse, yet so much better:
For starters I was dressed in a giant winter parka that I had quasi-borrowed from my ex. It was oversized to the point of making me look like the world's saddest emperor penguin. I'd spent the night on a flixbus (because what's new), was sleep deprived to the point of delyrium and wore giant hiking boots. The fact that I also suffer from a condition called "always looking like a 12yr old" certainly wasn't helping. In short, I looked like you could've cast me as Gavroche then and there.
The waiter proceeded, in czech, to ask me- well, something in czech. My czech skills are... lacking, and even that's a euphemism. I replied with all the wit I could muster: "What?? Sorry"
He repeated, now in english: "Hi, can I help you?"
I decided to opt for the one answer that could possibly make me look even more like a lost child.
"No, I'm just looking for my friends!"
Fantastic, stellar job, you babyfaced lunatic. Why not tell him that you'd now like to call your mum to come pick you up now? Jfc.
The waiter had already entered lost-child-emergency mode and actually offered to let me call someone if I needed to. Ah shit. "I can make you some tea!" he added. I got the vague feeling that he was five minutes and one more concerning remark on my part away from calling the authorities on me, so my reply of "ah, no no, I'm perfectly fine!" came out with a wee bit too much panic in my voice.
At that point he asked me what I was doing in Prague to begin with. In his eyes, there was a child standing in his cafe, unable to speak the local language and without his friends. Goddamn you, google maps.
I had travelled to the czech republic for a larp, and I'd rather have perished than explain the concept of larping to a random gay waiter. "Oh, it's very very complicated" I said instead. Holy shit, can you act less like a potential human trafficking victim, I fucking beg you?? Thanks in advance.
By this point the waiter was even more concerned, if possible. I thanked him several times (I must've seemed so composed and relaxed) and promptly booked it back out onto the street. Average Wednesday

some of my favorite moments from the 1995 10th Anniversary Concert of Les Miserables bc it's BARRICADE DAY and thus tis the season:
the convicts during Look Down all being Valjeans from different countries
the bishop M is baby faced and has an angelic voice
the clips from the fully staged show that they insert whenever there is too long of an instrumental/to explain things
colm wilkinson and philip quast's confrontation makes me want to chew on my laptop screen. so good. so crisp
baby cosette gets spooked by a balloon popping during castle on a cloud but barely flinches and keeps singing
the entire cast in the background of master of the house bopping back and forth in time. they are so here for it and it's amazing
philip quast's stars. he's so fucking good. i'm insane about him
michael maguire as enjolras's little happy dance when gavroche tells them that lamarque is dead
michael ball as marius somehow gives himself literally heart eyes whenever he talks about cosette. i can see them. it's so funny
during a heart full of love, colm wilkinson and philip quast are so invested in the background. they're leaning over to whisper to each other. they are besties
lea salonga as eponine delivers "i know this house i tell you, there's nothing here for you. just the old man and the girl, they live ordinary lives" like a GODDESS she is EVERYTHING
michael ball surreptitiously wiping his sweat on lea salonga's hair during her death scene. mans is dying a little
drink with me features anthony crivello as a fucking stellar grantaire, and after his verse, enj comes over and puts his hand on his shoulder to comfort him for a very long time. complete with a lingering touch on the arm and everything. fantastic exr crumbs 👍
the clips from the full show of the final battle are hilarious. completely different cast (though only obvious to insane people like us.)
highlights include one of les amis right on the middle of the barricade doing like. a backwards worm he's so into his death throes. he always has me losing my shit
empty chairs at empty tables includes the fucking cruel choice to have the entire les amis cast of actors line up on each side of michael ball and just a step behind so that they're in shadows, all staring sadly at him for the whole song. gives the impression of all the ghosts of marius's dead friends looking on from the afterlife and demanding answers. heart wrenching. THIS IS JUST SUPPOSED TO BE A CONCERT, WHY ARE U DOING STAGING LIKE THIS
beggars at the feast has everyone in the background clapping/tapping along again. love seeing the thenardiers get their due appreciation
the 17 valjeans from other international productions enter after the finale and they all have their gavroches holding their country flags it's so fucking cute
and of course final encore with all the additional valjeans and the whole cast is fucking ACES
ANYWAY if ur looking for a production to watch that is good af this is the top of my list even though it isn't fully staged. it's sooooo. it's some good fucking food. happy barricade day!!

Nervous embarrassment around them for Eponine and Cosette?
Éponine doesn’t rest any part of her identity on being cool. She takes a little pride, maybe, in the way Gavroche still seems to think she is even at the age when his guardian absolutely should not be cool, or in the way Marius calls her a badass and actually seems to mean it, but it doesn’t really matter because it’s not really true, or something she does on purpose. It’s all just bluster, she’s always known that, all her raised eyebrows and pointed silences, but people read it like she’s unbothered and too cool to acknowledge all the shit she has to deal with.
It’s still disconcerting, though, the way it all goes away the second she’s around Cosette.
Cosette, who looks like she should be a fucking TikTok influencer, too pretty to be real, but who’s too genuine to ever pull that off. Who volunteers, who bakes cookies and shares them around like she’s anxious to please her new friends, who ducks out of evening gatherings to call her father and wish him goodnight like it’s something she wants to do and not a weird obligation. Anything Éponine is, she’s pretty much the opposite, and with the history between them, she shouldn’t give Éponine the time of day, but she still does. One week of awkwardness when Marius introduced them and then she was fine, sought Éponine out to clear the air, and now Éponine gets cookies and offers to babysit and Cosette sitting next to her on the rare occasion she makes a meeting or a party.
And Éponine is completely unable to deal with any of it. Maybe it’s the guilt, from being the favored child when Cosette wasn’t. Maybe it’s that Cosette won’t let her apologize without getting this look on her face like she wants to say sorry too. Whatever it is, it glues Éponine’s tongue to the roof of her mouth whenever she tries talking to her.
“She is gorgeous,” says Marius when she complains, with the easy unself-consciousness of a man who pined over Cosette for a solid three months before Cosette apologetically told him she’s gay, another thing Éponine tries not to think about too closely. “So maybe that’s why you have trouble talking to her?”
“I don’t get like that with people I like,” says Éponine, to a guy who never once noticed how much she wanted him until her and Grantaire’s sadsack crush support group got her over him and got Grantaire to get off his ass and make a move.
“Yes, but it’s Cosette. She’s not like anybody else.”
She isn’t, and Éponine doesn’t know what to do with that, doesn’t know what Cosette wants her to do with that, when she sits down next to Éponine whenever there’s a free chair at her side and doesn’t mind when every word Éponine says is choked off and she fumbles her drinks and almost falls over when she makes the mistake of tipping her chair back.
Mentioning it to Marius is probably a mistake, because after that, he is way more inclined to call Cosette over and give his chair up to her, so Éponine is suddenly spending twice as much time with her, and the exposure therapy isn’t helping. Her only comfort is that her freezing up is way easier to deal with than if she shared Grantaire’s tendency for word vomit.
Cosette notices. Of course she does. She sees the way Éponine is with everyone else and the way Éponine is with her, and she gets this pinched little line between her brows like she’s getting all the wrong conclusions, but she still keeps seeking Éponine out, so maybe they aren’t all wrong. Or maybe she’s like Marius, going for exposure therapy, though Éponine still wonders why.
And she keeps choking and blushing and looking away, can’t help it, can’t keep her cool.
Cosette walks her home after a meeting, like that’s who Éponine is, like she lives down the street from the fifties sockhop, like Cosette’s not the one deserving of that kind of care, but she insists, and Éponine is tongue-tied, so Éponine doesn’t find a way to say no. And they walk, and Éponine feels stupidly like Cosette is carrying her nonexistent books, but Cosette is walking with her arms swinging easily, and Éponine has hers stuffed in her pockets, because Cosette is walking just close enough that their hands would brush if Éponine let hers swing too.
“It’s just me,” says Cosette at Éponine’s door, all earnest and sweet and ducking her head until Éponine is meeting her eyes squarely. “It’s just me, and I don’t want to scare you.”
Éponine has seen so much shit, and the idea of Cosette and her doe eyes scaring her should be laughable. But maybe, at the heart of it, that’s what this is. Cosette matters too much, deserves too much, for Éponine to feel okay fucking this up. “You’re not ‘just’ anything,” she says, and it comes out whispery and weak, but at least it comes out. “And that’s what’s scary.”
“Well,” Cosette smiles, and now she’s blushing a little, just faintly pink where the streetlights hit her, so at least Éponine isn’t alone in it. “Maybe we just … do this. Go slow. And it will get a little less scary for both of us. But there’s no rush, okay?”
Éponine manages to take her hand out of her pocket and put it on Cosette’s arms for a few seconds until she starts feeling stupid not being able to move in any closer and lets go. “Okay,” she says, and smiles stupidly in response to Cosette’s smile before she walks away and goes inside and feels just a little bit lighter.
In the end, maybe that’s better than being cool.

Time to finally relay my thoughts on the Les Mis I saw August 3rd, 2024.
Keep in mind, I went into this as someone who wanted to get my mother and brother to like this story. Also, I’ve seen a million and one recordings, so I know the show pretty well already and am aware of my preferences concerning it.
Act 1
Intro was so good. I like the boat format for the prisoners. It gives the actors something to do and is good and clear tonally.
This Javert did not make a strong first impression. He seemed extremely muted idk.
So I’m not a Nick Cartell fan. I’m sorry. I just don’t like him that much. I might be able to explain why at some point.
The lighting was amazing in these opening scenes.
The bishop had such a nice voice. I always love the bishop.
Valjean went nuts with the “took my fliiiiiiiiight”
Oh I forgot to mention that all of the house lights hadn’t turned off yet. It was a little weird. They eventually got turned off either before or after Valjean’s Soliloquy.
Speaking of the Soliloquy, I’ve heard a recording of this actor singing this song before and it definitely sounds better in person. Better, but still not my favorite. Nick Cartell has a tendency to stray from the melody for acting purposes in a way that I’m not a fan of.
Also, this version had Petit Gervais. It was weird. And distracting. And disjointed. I didn’t like it.
I love a good ensemble number, so at the end of the day was great. Also, the transition from the crowd to the factory was so smooth.
I remember the foreman I think had a line that changed from the original that I was kinda confused about. Overall, I think this was a thing with both at the end of the day and lovely ladies. Like there were a handful of words that were switched and I didn’t understand why.
This Fantine was quite good. Like I’m glad this was the Fantine that I saw with my mom and brother. Solid performance.
This Bamatabois was odd. I think he was too much of a caricature.
Once again, Javert is quite subdued. Intimidating, sure. But not all that interesting otherwise. No swagger.
The staging of Fantine’s Arrest felt just a little busy, but that’s really a nitpick.
When did they cut part of Fauchelevent’s line in Runaway Cart?
So I really listen for how an actors says the line “forgive me sir I would not dare.” This was fine. Nothing special.
I will say that I liked Nick Cartell’s version of Who Am I.
Fantine’s death was so sad. I prefer versions like this where they don’t have her get out of bed. It’s simpler and it gets across her weakened state a little better, I think.
Confrontation was amazing. This Javert was really starting to prove himself here. It’s like the actor just started having fun with it.
This little Cosette was absolutely adorable. I’m not usually a fan of Castle On A Cloud, but this was great.
This production had a good Thenardier couple. Their comedic timing was great. This is not to discredit the amazing job that they did, but I’m not a huge fan of the Thenardiers. My family liked them a lot though, so they were definitely very funny.
So Look Down was a success because my family immediately liked Gavroche. As they should. My brother said that that the Look Down melody was one of his favorites.
Now I think it’s good to mention that this version didn’t have the time skip projections. Like those things that tell you what year it is. None to be seen. It confused my family. I was cool with explaining it though.
My brother found Marius annoying. +1 sibling point. We can make fun of Marius now. (to be clear, the actor was very good)
This Eponine was pretty cool, but my mom pointed something out that I think is worth mentioning. She’s not lit very well. My eyesight is shit, so I’m trusting my mom when she said that it was impossible to see the actor’s face.
This Cosette is so adorable. Like everything about her so sweet. In love with her.
This scene had an interesting set design that I don’t know if I’ve seen before. It looked a little more slanted than usual. It was cool though.
The beginning of Javert’s Intervention got a laugh, so that was good. He really leaned into the drama more than before.
During Javert’s Intervention, I tend to find Thenardier’s part a little overwrought and distracting. Unfortunately, this was one of those cases. My brother liked it though.
Javert kinda went back to being subdued for Stars. Actually no. He brought some energy for “and so it must BE”
Les Amis in this production were fantastic. My mom really liked Red and Black apparently.
This Enjolras had a weird fluttery vibrato that I’m kinda obsessed with.
Kyle Adams’ performance as Grantaire was magical. I don’t know if I can point out specific moments, but it was fantastic.
I am once again in love with Cosette.
Neither my mother nor brother were fans of the romance aspect of the story. I don’t blame them.
That said, the harmony at the end of heart full of love was angelic.
One Day More is always a showstopper. No notes.
Actually, I will mention that Javert hasn’t changed costumes yet. We don’t get to see his disguise til the second act. I kinda like that because, if you don’t recognize him immediately at the barricade, it makes the reveal later kinda fun to watch.
Oops turns out I’ll have to post this in two parts

Just finished watching the deleted scene, and I thought about smth
Why don't Alice get mad and throw a tantrum ? She's a little girl, constantly stressing about not dying and stuff, and she's just standing there, saying "I'm cold Kara" repeatedly and overall being just a little doll you need to take care of. Girl, kids ugly cry for no reason, why wouldn't she ? She could scream at Ralph, scream at Kara, scream at Zlatko, scream at Luther, but she's just there.
That would've made a huge difference in the scenarios, and possibly the most heartbreaking scenes. I mean, picture this : Kara and Luther are shot, and Alice starts screaming, sobbing, shouting pleads or straight up cursing the killer(s) with hiccups in her voice, just to get cut off by a bullet in the head. Reminds me of Gavroche's death smh.
But honestly, I don't even know how they would have a little girl play that. It's really hard to get a child to pretend strong emotions like that, and that's probably why Alice isn't a very developed character. But I'm SURE they could've done it. With a good kick in the ass, I'm sure this would've been a piece of cake for the animators.
Bc when Alice dies, you're sorry for Kara. Not for Alice. That's the problem, we're given zero attachment to her, not the slightest thing that could make her a good, emotional character. Like, give us a reason to not kill Kara immediately other than Kara herself.
Luther too, he's just the big fella that wants to protect his found family. Give us angst material Cage, make Luther have impostor syndrome about Kara and Alice's trust, make him more than a big guy with a so-called "big heart". Cause I don't see any "big heart", just an emergency solution.
And let Kara be angry god damnit. I wanna see the rage to live, the rage to protect. Here I got nothing but empty levels, except the first ones. In them, Kara and Alice can't really be angry, they're just lost. But, like, let them blow up at Zlatko's level, and after. Adam's being a little teen asshole, be agressive ?? He's literally treating y'all's right to live like shit and you're just there, feeling sorry for yourself ? Bruh
