#les mis 10th anniversary concert

some of my favorite moments from the 1995 10th Anniversary Concert of Les Miserables bc it's BARRICADE DAY and thus tis the season:

the convicts during Look Down all being Valjeans from different countries

the bishop M is baby faced and has an angelic voice

the clips from the fully staged show that they insert whenever there is too long of an instrumental/to explain things

colm wilkinson and philip quast's confrontation makes me want to chew on my laptop screen. so good. so crisp

baby cosette gets spooked by a balloon popping during castle on a cloud but barely flinches and keeps singing

the entire cast in the background of master of the house bopping back and forth in time. they are so here for it and it's amazing

philip quast's stars. he's so fucking good. i'm insane about him

michael maguire as enjolras's little happy dance when gavroche tells them that lamarque is dead

michael ball as marius somehow gives himself literally heart eyes whenever he talks about cosette. i can see them. it's so funny

during a heart full of love, colm wilkinson and philip quast are so invested in the background. they're leaning over to whisper to each other. they are besties

lea salonga as eponine delivers "i know this house i tell you, there's nothing here for you. just the old man and the girl, they live ordinary lives" like a GODDESS she is EVERYTHING

michael ball surreptitiously wiping his sweat on lea salonga's hair during her death scene. mans is dying a little

drink with me features anthony crivello as a fucking stellar grantaire, and after his verse, enj comes over and puts his hand on his shoulder to comfort him for a very long time. complete with a lingering touch on the arm and everything. fantastic exr crumbs 👍

the clips from the full show of the final battle are hilarious. completely different cast (though only obvious to insane people like us.)

highlights include one of les amis right on the middle of the barricade doing like. a backwards worm he's so into his death throes. he always has me losing my shit

empty chairs at empty tables includes the fucking cruel choice to have the entire les amis cast of actors line up on each side of michael ball and just a step behind so that they're in shadows, all staring sadly at him for the whole song. gives the impression of all the ghosts of marius's dead friends looking on from the afterlife and demanding answers. heart wrenching. THIS IS JUST SUPPOSED TO BE A CONCERT, WHY ARE U DOING STAGING LIKE THIS

beggars at the feast has everyone in the background clapping/tapping along again. love seeing the thenardiers get their due appreciation

the 17 valjeans from other international productions enter after the finale and they all have their gavroches holding their country flags it's so fucking cute

and of course final encore with all the additional valjeans and the whole cast is fucking ACES

ANYWAY if ur looking for a production to watch that is good af this is the top of my list even though it isn't fully staged. it's sooooo. it's some good fucking food. happy barricade day!!

i find the lines “my soul belongs to god, i know” from who am i and then “he knows his way in the dark, mine is the way of the lord” from stars a very interesting contrast between valjean and javert. we often think of javert as following the laws strictly and apathetically, but he thinks he’s doing god’s work, not dissimilar from valjean doing everything he does in the name of god, but he does it with so much love instead.

it literally starts with valjean breaking the law for love (stealing bread for his family) and javert letting him go (purposefully) for the first time (his yellow ticket of leave) but telling valjean that he (the law) will always be looking over his shoulder.

and then we get the end that javert lets valjean go purposefully because of a break in his moral code. i’ve always thought that javert’s suicide feels like he thinks he’s going to hell (“the stars are black and cold”) and maybe he really does think that because he thought that he was doing the lord’s work by upholding the law and now he’s let a wanted man go, so is he damned? which brings us back to who am i, with valjean asking “if i stay silent, i am damned”. javert is literally staying silent, so he is damned in his mind

some stuff i read and watched in october:

midnight mass: october innit, did a doctor sleep rewatch too (director's cut obvs) - hill house probably fucks me up more emotionally but riley's speech about what happens when you die (synapses version) is like the closest anything's come to expressing my feelings about it so. also did fall of the house of usher which was fun enough but i feel like i'd have got more out of it if i knew more poe whoops

bodies: netflix time travel time loop nonsense i got weirdly sucked into, kyle soller forever etc. stephen graham reminded me i need to watch boiling point

troy: i'm still wallowing in the emily wilson iliad, therefore, troy rewatch. god it's so stupid but i am weirdly fond of it. in 2004 i just thought eric bana was so so handsome. every old man in this is killing it and brad pitt and orlando bloom are unspeakably bad lol. still bananas to me that that one quote gets circulated and attributed to homer when in fact it is by one of the game of thrones dudes

a quiet passion: god terence davies is such a loss. there's a scene in this where emily dickinson is talking about loneliness and she's so Angry about it and i cried so much

the heiress: watched partly for terence and partly for marty and partly for william wyler. i Don't understand how zooms work but there's a shot where olivia de havilland turns back to the house and it's like everything looms and narrows. need to watch more montgomery clift pictures

i know where i'm going!: i can't get to any of the powell and pressburger bfi screenings so i rewatched the red shoes and i watched this for the first time. very romantic imo to get stuck on a scottish island and fall in love with someone who is not your fiance and want them so much you try and sail away from them in the middle of a perilous storm because they keep standing so close to you!!

killers of the flower moon: give lily gladstone everything my god. literally i can't rewatch that one scene in certain women bc it's So much she's SO good

the quick and the dead: we used to make Films you know. 107 minutes. bunch of cowboys in a shootout competition and that's the whole plot. sam raimi inventing new types of zooms. mid-90s russell crowe and absolute baby leo. no notes!

all that jazz: bob fosse you absolute nightmare. i had to go and rewatch the on broadway opening rn just thinking about it. five stars

possession: something fucked up to watch on halloween! very strange and harrowing, loved the tentacle monster obvs

emma donoghue, learned by heart: i do have a soft spot for famed west yorkshire lesbian gentleman jack for reasons of like ancestral queerness, did Not know that anne lister went to boarding school in york and lived in the same building i met my tutor every term. i love york and i love lesbians and i liked this a lot, what a good and ultimately wrenching way into the story. time for a slammerkin reread and also when will sarah waters return to us etc

4*Town As Les Mis Characters

Robaire as Jean Valjean

I'm gonna be honest, the whole reason this AU sparked in my mind was because I thought Ro and Z would make a really interest Valjean/Javert dynamic

Ro as Valjean just makes sense to me

Valjean cares so much about the people close to him, and he does so much to further their lives and make them happy, even to his own detriment

If that isn't Robaire I'm living a lie

Aaron Z as Javert

Javert and Valjean are foils to each other, their arcs cannot exist without the deep connection and obsession (Javert moreso than Valjean) with each other

It's it's it's

It's the rivalry? Hero/villain dynamic? It's the conflict, the undoing of his morals because Valjean is just that good

I can't describe this well at all without writing a fic, so don't worry, I will be writing a fic

Just, if you know Les Mis, you'll get it. If Robaire is Valjean, the only who can be Javert is Aaron Z

Jesse as Fantine

Aside from the first two, I don't feel particularly strongly about who is who

Jesse as Fantine though, I think it's because he's a dad LOL

If you don't know Les Mis, you probably know the song I Dreamed a Dream, that's Fantine's big song

Les Mis AU Jesse lives a short and sad life :-( sorry y'all

He has a son (T) though, and he cares for him so deeply it got him killed whoops

I'd say spoilers, but it LITERALLY happens in the prologue, I don't know what to tell you

Aaron T as Cosette

I've been going back and forth between T being Cosette or Eponine, but I'm choosing to spare his life this time hahaha

Rough childhood? Yeah, but it's okay because Robaire adopts him

Tae is Marius simply and exclusively because I can totally see him seeing T walk by and going "👁👁 Revolution? Nah, I'm gonna fall in love"

I wish there were more members, because I want to assign Eponine to someone :-( There is just barely not enough members to fill out the main six characters
