REVIEW /// Genghis Tron - Dream Weapon Eine künstlerische Pause bewirkt ja manchmal Wunder. Ob sie nun 13 Jahre dauern muss, ist eine andere Frage. Im Falle von GENGHIS TRON hat sie nicht nur zu einem neuen Sänger, sondern auch zu einem Stilwechsel geführt. Hat man sich früher dem Extrem-Metal gewidmet, werden auf „Dream Weapon“ experimentellere Töne angeschlagen. Prog, Ambient, RetroWave, Electro und Metal sind die neuen Gefilde der 4 New Yorker. Treibende Gitarren, statische Beats und der mystische Gesang von Tony Wolski (The Armed) ergeben in Kombination eine so dichte und intensive Atmosphäre, dass "Dream Weapon" für mich jetzt schon zum Highlight des Frühjahrs avancieren lässt. Ihr glaub mir nicht? Hört selbst. Allein das Intro mit seinem verschrobenen Synthesizer-Rhytmus beamt Einen direkt in andere Ebenen und erinnert an die frühen Stücke von Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Mit "Pyrocene" geht es im digitalen Raum weiter, um dann in den hypnotischen Beats des Titel Songs "Dream Weapon" zu münden. Generell geht der größte Shout-Out an Drummer Nick Yacyshyn, der sich stoisch Takt um Takt ins Gehör hämmert, dass ich mich manchmal Frage, ob ihm das alles wirklich Spaß macht. #wielangekanneinmenschrollsspielen Episch geht es mit "Great Mother" weiter. Das lässige, fast nach Shoegaze klingende "Ritual Circle" erinnert an 80er Bands, wie Ultravox und Duran Duran. Generell drückt sich mir beim Hören immer der gleiche Gedanke auf: "Wenn die Chemical Brothers ein Metal-Album schreiben würden, es würde klingen wie "Dream Weapon". Fazit: Gut Ding will Weile haben. Im Falle von GENGHIS TRON ist es nicht nur Gut sondern Genial geworden. Die Band transformiert sich in neue Spähren und erfindet sich dabei neu. In einem epischen Mix aus Ambient, Electro und Metal schaffen die Jungs aus Poughkeepsie, New York den Sprung in mein Musikherz und erfüllen dabei alle Erwartungen. GENGHIS TRON RETURN FROM HIATUS & ENTER STUDIO

New Album coming in 2021 from Relapse Records.

Genre-bending innovators GENGHIS TRON have announced their return. The band has begun recording their long-awaited third full-length with producer Kurt Ballou at GodCity Studio in Salem, Massachusetts. The new album is a follow up to the release of Board Up The House (2008). Following the amicable departure of former vocalist Mookie Singerman, founding members Hamilton Jordan and Michael Sochynsky will be joined by two new collaborators: vocalist Tony Wolski and Sumac/Baptists drummer Nick Yacyshyn.  

“We said it was just a hiatus and we meant it! It’s been incredible writing music again and hearing everything come together in the studio,” says Sochynsky. “This is the album we’ve always wanted to write. We can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on.”

GENGHIS TRON recently reissued their two full-length albums Board Up The House & Dead Mountain Mouth on vinyl for the first time in over 10 years. Orders are available at http://relapse.com/genghis-tron.

Formed in college by Jordan and Sochynsky, Genghis Tron concocted a dizzying yet compelling mix of grind, metal and electronic music that defied both genre and rational explanation. Their drummer was a machine. Both Jordan and Sochynsky did the programming before adding dense layers of frantic guitars and lush synthesizers.

“I was 19 when we started writing songs,” Jordan, now 36, recalls. “Michael was 20. The first thing we tried to do was cram together all our influences—shredding guitars and blastbeats, and then out of nowhere comes this really pleasant sounding Boards Of Canada or Autechre moment. It seemed like a great idea at the time.” 

They dropped the Cloak Of Love EP in 2005. Produced by über-guitarist Colin Marston of Krallice and Behold … The Arctopus, it was glitchy electronica, grind, and other disparate genres run through a blender in the most satisfying—and occasionally polarizing—way. As Canada’s Exclaim! exclaimed, “Adored or reviled, Genghis Tron are now nearing the head of the line in pushing the extreme music envelope.

”Not content to merely mash genres, Genghis Tron made their full-length debut with 2006’s Dead Mountain Mouth. Produced by Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, the album was considerably more nuanced than its predecessor. “We developed the idea of writing records that worked on multiple levels,” Sochynsky explains. “We wanted to make a brutal, heavy record—something you could really lose your shit to—but we also wanted to make a record that was incredibly layered and detailed at the same time. Something you could listen to on headphones and hear stuff you didn’t notice the first couple of times.”

There was touring—tons of it—with bands as disparate as Dillinger Escape Plan, The Faint, and Baroness. Singerman even detailed the band’s adventures in a monthly column for Decibel magazine. Meanwhile, the creative philosophy Genghis Tron had applied to Dead Mountain Mouth ramped up several levels.

When Board Up The House hit in 2008—complete with a guest shot from Dillinger Escape Plan vocalist Greg Puciato, followed by remixes by artists including Justin Broadrick, Ulver, and Tobacco —the underground went bananas. Rave reviews piled up; the UK’s Rock Sound named it Album Of The Year. Even the mainstream wanted a piece, with the New York Times hailing the record as a “Critic’s Choice.” The curators at Coachella took notice, booking the band on the 2009 edition of the renowned desert festival.

As if that weren’t enough, they collaborated with Converge on the song “Wretched World,” which appeared on Converge’s 2009 album, Axe To Fall. 

And then? In late 2010, Genghis Tron went on hiatus. Now, the hiatus is over.
