Dear Detective | Chapter 7
--------------------------
cw | mentions of bruises and scars as well as a deceased person
an | none
Previous | Next
--------------------------
As Heizou walked into the precinct, he expected to see a pile of papers  and files on his desk, however, he was met with the complete opposite.  A single file was placed in the middle and it was rather thin.  Laying on top of it was a piece of paper and a post-it note stuck on top.  The post-it note was from Kujou Sara and stated that it is of utmost importance he solve this case as it was a request from none other than Grand Priestess Guuji Yae.  As for the paper, well it read:
Dear Detective Shikanoin,
I have heard a lot about you and your expertise in solving cases.  I wish to commission your help to solve this one.  It is of great importance to me to see this case solved and you are my only hope in solving it.
With nothing to go on other than the emphasis of its importance, Heizou would have not taken the case, however, since it was requested from Guuji Yae herself, how could he refuse.  With his curiosity piqued, Heizou opened up the file.
A cold case.
The murder of a Liyuean woman, Renshu Ong, occurred almost fifteen years ago.  Her body was found buried in the forest of Wu Wang Hill.  Married a man by the name of Hsin Ong, but he died five years prior to cancer.  The autopsy report states she died from blunt force head trauma and there were multiple bruises and scars along her body.  No DNA was recovered.
To the untrained eye, one would see this case as having no leads.   Detective Shikanoin, however, is not your ordinary detective.  The one crucial piece of information everyone overlooked, no soulmate mark.  In the detective's eyes that could mean two things: one, she was born without one or two, she got it removed.  However, based on the time frame that the murder happened, getting rid of a soulmate mark was a lot harder to do.  The machines used to remove them could not properly remove it without leaving some sort of scarring.  Also, the procedure is expensive.  Based on the clothes she was wearing when found, she was part of the lower class.  There was no way for her to afford it.
Since Heizou debunked the latter, that meant the victim was born without a soulmate mark.  It was a little strange that there wasn’t much information on the victim.  A lot of crucial information was missing, but his intuition was telling him that all would be revealed later.
----------------
The evening sky was at its peak when Heizou walked up the stairs to the Grand Narukami Shrine.  He would have come earlier had it not been for Uesugi talking non stop, but he couldn't exactly blame him since he was telling Heizou what had happened when he was gone.  Finally reaching the torii gate at the top of the stairs, he sees Kano Nana patiently waiting by the prayer box.
"Hey cuz.  So, when do I get to meet this mysterious person?"
"Heizou," Kano Nana replied, "just in time.  Our guest arrived not too long ago and is with Lady Yae as we speak.  I'll go fetch them for you."
After waiting for a few minutes, Heizou sees a familiar mop of pink hair coming out of the shrine along with his cousin and an older man.  As the older man approached him, Heizou notices the man has some gray streaks in his hair.  Just from that, Heizou guesses that he is most likely in his mid fifties.  He also noticed that he has the same icy blue eyes as Y/n and can't help but feel like she is related to this case in some way.
The man stood in front of him and reached his hand out to Heizou,
"Hello Detective Shikanoin.  I am Bai Jun.  It's a pleasure to finally meet you.  Thank you for coming all this way."
While grabbing Bai Jun's hand, Heizou replied,
"There's no need to be so formal.  I'm more than happy to help, so it's no problem at all.  But I must ask, why did you decide to have me, an Inazuma Detective, take on this case instead of a Liyue Detective?  If I am not mistaken, this is a Liyuen case."
Bai Jun slowly drifted his gaze to the floor and let out a sigh before looking back at Heizou, his face stern and eyes piercing straight through his soul.
"As you have probably guessed, I have a deep attachment to this case.  The victim was my younger sister.  Although our family wasn't on speaking terms back then, she is still my family.  This case needs to be solved in order for my sister's soul to finally be put to rest which is why I requested Guuji Yae's help.  And trust me, I tried with the Liyuean police, but they are also the reason why it's a cold case in the first place, so there is no one else, except you."
"Well, if I'm going to solve this case, I'll need that information that was missing from the case file which I assume you have because it was never used in the first place, am I right?"
"Your assumption is correct.  Although we are related to her, the police at the time believed that our little family quarrel was not something worth investigating.  I have our testimonies, along with all of my family's records.  I hope they will be of use to your investigation."
Bai Jun opened his messenger bag and pulled out a file folder, handing it over to Heizou with two hands.
"As much as I would like to be a part of this, I'm afraid I can't be away from my shop for too long.  If you have everything you need, I'll be heading back to Liyue.  I hope to see you there."
And with that, Bai Jun makes a swift exit, back facing Heizou, never looking back.
With all the information finally in his hands, Heizou bids goodbye to his cousin and Lady Yae Miko.  As he walked through the torii gate and down the stairs to the entrance of the shrine, he utters these words of affirmation:
“I guess it's time to visit Liyue.”

"I Accidentally Became the World's Strongeset Because I'm Too Good at Shapeshifting"
Story and reviews under cut. From the Tales of the Youkai web event.
You write an isekai story about a bake-danki warrior...
A brave bake-danuki transformed into the most powerful demon kind in the world and succeeded in infiltrating the demon castle. However, it was mistaken for the real demon king. Relying on perfect shapeshifting skills, the bake-sanuki warrior managed to cover up its true identity. But how will it escape the castle?
Such a unique isekai story! But the part about searching for a warrior in the city gives me a feeling of déjà vu... - Kano Nana
You write a story about the bake-danuki and magical girls...
Because it could transform quickly with a "poof", the bake-danuki stumbled into another world, and somehow accidentally won first prize in a magical girl contest! Now the most powerful magical girl in the world, how will the bake-danuki use its super-fast shapeshifting skill to face upcoming challenges?
What an unexpected story about a magical girl. So the quick shape-shifting is also part of the magical girl's powers? - Imaginative Girl

I forgot how to draw but I thought that Heizou's family deserve a bit of love. Guy on the right is his brother except we know nothing about him so I gave him a design and called him Akihiko.

After spending the past few days leveling up Heizou and making Sayu share some of her artifacts with him, these two are now carrying my team
Now I’m just imaging Sayu and Heizou being besties... they don’t have voicelines about each other, but- c’mon. Heizou HAS to know Sayu, since his cousin’s basically tasked with babysitting Sayu and drag her back to work when she’s off napping somewhere, and Kano Nana does call Heizou “Little Brat”, so... maybe Sayu and Heizou team up every once in a while. Heizou helps hide Sayu or get Kano Nana off her tail, in return Sayu just so ‘happens’ to nap in places where she can listen in on useful conversations for Heizou
Two anemo-wielders with questionable work-ethics teaming up to drive their superiors up the wall. Just... I’d love that, man. Sayu and Heizou being besties, and I’m sad that they don’t have voice-lines about each other-
...anyhow. That’s what headcanons are for, rip. The mental image of Heizou ranting to Sayu about a case that’s giving him trouble is bringing me so much joy... a pissed off Heizou, wildly gesturing, a sleepy Sayu giving him some half-assed advice. Or... there’s a 50/50 chance Sayu will either give him some amazing advice that helps Heizou crack his case, or it’s just some absolute bullshit like “Have you tried taking a nap?” and he never knows what he’ll get.
It only adds to Kujou Sara’s frustrations with Heizou. Not only is he a nightmare to work with, even his most trusted.... ‘informant’ is the laziest Shuumatsuban-member she’s ever met.

Kano Nana wants to smile at the sight that appears before her.
Her usually sleepy ninja-ward looks unusually determined to stay awake. Her Mujina tail swings back and forth from the constant way her body moves. She even lightly slaps her cheeks to keep her eyes from falling.
“I’m not going to sleep today…Or at least, I’m only sleeping for half a day. Hmm, not gonna half sleep!”
Sayu takes a big stand to not sleep at this particular day, and Kano can’t help the proudness she feels for the small girl.
Today is the only date that the shrine maiden will allow the ninja to rest, but Sayu has decide to not sleep. Even if it’s just half a day, it’s still a start!
Kano feels so proud, watching how the girl really does not give in the urge to sleep. Her hands itch to give Sayu the carrot cake, but the priestess will not give in her urges to indulge the ninja right now. The carrot cake has to be served later.
It’s supposed to be Sayu’s reward and birthday cake, after all.
“Traveler, you’re finally here,” the ninja’s eyes brighten immediately at the sight of the blond traveler, and Kano also smiles at the main person who has motivated the change in her ward.
The Traveler grins brightly as a sun in return and pats the head of the smaller girl, who flushes at the contact but does not move away.
~.~
After a few moments, Sayu begins to slow down. Her voice becomes softer and losing focus, and her eyes slowly drop. She eventually falls asleep, his hand holding onto a fork of cake. The Traveler and Kano exchange amused glances, eyes softening at the now asleep ninja. They both put on a blanket for the child to keep her warm.
It's truly a nice day.

If Sayu had to take even just one more little tiny step, she was going to die.
Actually, it wasn’t that bad, and she knew it, but it definitely felt like that. She woke up this morning feeling flushed and achy all over. Her stomach hurt and her chest felt like someone must have hit it with a hammer while she was sleeping, many times. She was sure, at first, that all she wanted and needed was just to get more sleep. She knew she had ninja training this morning, but she tried to see if she could get to one of her favorite sleeping spots to hide instead. She started with trying to run there, but that quickly turned into walking. She felt too tired to run, but even when she was just walking, her head was all dizzy and it seemed like she was going to topple over any second. It was also way too slow. What if the shrine maidens caught her? So, to go faster, she turned into a ball and started rolling, but that was a much, much worse mistake. After only a few seconds, everything hurt really bad and she had to stop. Her head screamed with pain and it felt like a whole family of Onikabuto were fighting inside of her skull.
So now, she was stuck there in the middle of the forest. She clutched her stomach in pain, remembering that she didn’t eat this morning, but also realizing that food sounded really bad right now. She did want water, though. Her throat was super dry. Should she go back? She should probably go back. If she felt too bad to even run, the shrine maidens were going to catch her sooner or later anyways.
“Sayu! Where have you been!?” Kano Nana scolded her as soon as Sayu finally showed up to training. Sayu was too tired to make a good excuse, though. Besides, she said that all the time, so this was nothing new.
“Getting water,” Sayu responded kind of truthfully, while her whole body protested her standing there. She wanted to lie down. “Hey, Nana? I feel really sick today. Can we…not do training?”
Kano Nana responded with a loud sigh that told Sayu not to get her hopes up. “Sayu, I’m sorry, but you can’t just get out of training or your studies because you don’t feel like it. You need to learn discipline.”
“Okay, but…but, I’m serious!” Sayu, in her desperation, started to plead. “My stomach…” She clutched the offending area tightly, wondering if she might actually throw up.
“Sayu, stop that!” Nana scolded her again. “Don’t fake being sick on me just to get out of training! You were just fine yesterday. Now, come on; we need to get started.”
Sayu tried to do her training fast just to get it over with. She felt bad before, but the longer she went into this terrible morning, the more it got worse. Sayu was too tired to even try to figure out how to make Nana believe her. It’s true; it wasn’t like this was the first time. Sometimes, Sayu wouldn’t be feeling well, and she would try to get out of doing work on that account, but she would be told to do it anyways, because she had to. And maybe, sometimes, she would exaggerate the pain, just a tiny bit, to make a point. But she didn’t remember the last time she felt this bad. Well, no, she did, actually. The last time she was really sick was when Sensei was still around.
Sensei knew she was feeling bad before she said anything at all.
Sayu held out okay until it was time to start running her laps around the forest. She knew, the moment she started, that this wasn’t going to go well, and it didn’t.
She wasn’t quite sure where she was when she fell over—at that point, everything went blurry and dizzy, and her feet couldn’t push her forward at all, nor could they hold her tiny body up any longer. She collapsed onto the ground, the impact rattling her head and the position feeling very uncomfortable with the dirt and the rocks, but she felt too dead to do anything about it.
The minutes passed very slowly before Kano Nana finally showed up.
“Sayu! What are you…Sayu?” Nana’s voice suddenly sounded much gentler, and maybe a little scared, too. “Oh no, you’re burning up…” Nana turned her over and touched her forehead with the back of her hand. Sayu didn’t have any response other than a small groan when Nana picked her up.
Kano Nana carried Sayu in her arms all the way back to the shrine. She felt very warm and Sayu felt so much more comfortable than she did on the ground, even though everything still hurt and she kept wishing she could just fall asleep and make it all go away.
“I’m sorry, Sayu,” Nana told her. “I wouldn’t have guessed…” she trailed off without saying anything. Sayu didn’t say anything either. She was started to not like the walking all that much. Every gentle step Nana took still felt like her head and her insides were getting bounced up and down.
Out of her half-open eyes, Sayu could see that they made it back to the shrine, now. Did that mean she could sleep soon? Or were they going to do something else?
“Kano Nana! And…little Sayu? What happened!?” Miyuki sounded worried.
“Stay back,” Nana warned her. “Sayu is sick, and she has a high fever. She could be contagious. Don’t worry; I’ll stay with her; just get me some water, okay?”
Nana brought her to her little room, in the building where the shrine maidens lived. Sayu slept in places that were not her room a lot, because sleeping in her room was a good way to get caught, so it didn’t exactly feel like the most familiar place to her. However, when Nana laid her on her bed and tucked her in, it did feel a whole lot more comfortable than she remembered it to be.
“Alright, drink up,” Nana told her after Miyuki came back with the jug of water, pouring it into a cup and then handing it to her. “You’re going to need plenty of fluids, and we need to get some food in you, too. Have you eaten this morning?”
Sayu accepted the cup of water gratefully, but the other idea sounded like an awful one. “No,” she admitted with a whine, “but I don’t want to eat anything. Really.”
Nana breathed out a tense sigh. “Well, you have to eat something. How about…some miso soup, alright? That should be gentle enough.”
“Okay.” That didn’t sound too terrible, maybe.
Sayu lay in bed and wished that everything didn’t have to still feel so awful. Her stomach hurt way too loudly and she was hot and flushed in a way that was far worse than it was when she woke up. Why did it have to get so bad so fast? Everything was fine yesterday. She guessed that she must have caught something.
“Alright,” Nana announced as she came back a few minutes later with the bowl in hand. “Here you go.”
It smelled good, almost. However, Sayu couldn’t even dream of eating it right now. She eyed it as it was placed on the bedside table but buried herself further in her blankets instead. She didn’t want to think about food. She didn’t want to move. She just wanted everything to go away. “I’ll…eat it later,” she groaned.
“Sayu, I know you don’t feel like it, but you have to eat,” Nana chastised. “Just a little bit, okay?”
“No, I’ll be fine,” Sayu protested weakly. “I’ll get to it. Just…go do whatever shrine maiden thing you have to do.”
Nana paused for a few long beats. “No,” she said finally. “I’m staying here until the doctor gets here, to keep an eye on you.”
Sayu looked up at her with half-lidded eyes that still couldn’t go to sleep, her breathing heavy and her mind far too slow to deal with anything at all. “…why?” she asked blearily. ‘Keep an eye on her’? “I’m not…going to…run away…”
“N-No!” Nana refuted as if offended. “Why would you think I meant it like that? I mean, I’m your caretaker—it’s my job to make sure you’re okay.”
“No…” Sayu countered with a groan. “You’re here to make sure I train, and I…can’t train…not now…”
“Well, it’s more than that,” Nana said, looking away. “I’m not just your trainer; would I be forcing you to eat carrots all the time if that was the case? Well…technically yes, but that’s not the point! You’re in the care of the shrine, so of course we’ll watch over you when you’re sick. I’ll leave you alone to sleep later, but first, I have to make sure you’re stable, alright?”
Sayu made a small sound with her throat that meant nothing. Caretaker… her mind turned the word over like a wet lump of dough. She guessed this would maybe be what that meant. Parents were like ‘caretakers,’ right? Sayu didn’t have any parents. That didn’t really bother her, though—she never knew them, so it was kind of hard to miss them, even if she did think about it sometimes. The only one she really missed was her sensei. He would always know just the right thing to do. It was more than that, though…she just wanted to see him there, to see his smile, to know that he was okay. Would his mission ever end, she wondered? Was he ever coming back?
Sayu eyed the soup again. Her stomach tightened in pain, feeling like it was protesting its own existence. But, she had to eat, didn’t she? She had to try.
She started to pull herself up to a sitting position, and to her surprise, Kano Nana stepped in and helped support her the rest of the way. “Thank you,” Sayu said with a weak smile in spite of everything. “I’ll try to eat now.”
