i decided to take that daemon quiz for all the scratchverse chars so here are the results:
Seth (Scratch):
Reserved, quiet, and hard-working, with a tender heart and calloused knuckles. Crazy social anxiety, but also has this zone they get into for performing.
Milk Snake (Serpent)
wow I love Themes and Symbolism —
Serpent: "Those who have serpent daemons are sly and observant people whose aim is to endure. They are mysterious and private, deeply intellectual and preferably three steps ahead of everyone else. They live in the big picture rather than day by day, and their vanity is well-deserved."
Milk Snake: "You are a private but polite individual who looks before they leap. [...] Milk snakes are tactful and shrewd people with high standards, preferring their comfort zone but calm in the face of change. They are classically passive aggressive and hate conflict, willing to take advantage of others to avoid negative attention and regain their peace."
I'd say it's not 100% spot on, as Seth isn't really that manipulative, but it's fairly close. If I were to go through the options and pick I might go for a boa instead, or maybe a vine snake, but milk snake still works, at least to some extent.
Annie (Electrojet):
Annie is shrewd, not very personable, strong beliefs. Firm, confident in certain situations, but anxious in times of change, not talkative, except for info dumps or overexplaining, etc. (#autism)
and according to the quiz she is:
A little owl:

Owl: "Those who have owl daemons are intelligent and precise, though unlike other bird daemons they exude pure logic. They are observant and critical, preferring [subtlety] and independence when it comes to pursuing their goals."
Little owl: "You are a private and dutiful individual who is selectively affectionate towards those you care about. More so than others with owl daemons, those with little owls are sensitive people, not terribly ambitious and more concerned with planning ahead and developing their inner strength. They're very self-sufficient and have no qualms about communicating that to others."
Fits her pretty well, imo
Naomi (Geckonyx):
Naomi is talkative, social, lots of friends/acquaintances, always speaks her mind. Loves to learn, a little competitive. Also goes to therapy, talks about her feelings. Morning person.
Result:
Magpie (perching bird)

Perching bird: "Those who have perching bird daemons are intelligent and like finding patterns, though unlike other bird daemons they are more chatty and social. They enjoy putting their inner thoughts into words and wearing their heart on their sleeves."
Magpie: "You are a clever and cryptic individual who has a talent for graceful communication. More so than others with perching bird daemons, those with magpies have insatiable curiosity and tend to get distracted by possibilities. They love hidden meanings and uncovering the unknown."
I'm not so sure about graceful communication or crypticness (although, as a stealthy character…) but she is generally clever and curious so it still fits
TJ (REfactor):
A boisterous, friendly guy who deals with his neuroses by being extremely chill and yet very high-strung. Moves too fast but is incredibly devoted.
Squirrel monkey (primate):

Primate: "Those who have primate daemons are socially savvy and charismatic people who know how to get on people’s good sides. They’re often inspiring leaders, though just as often manipulators with strong intuition. They have a gift for understanding and are led by their insatiable curiosity."
Squirrel monkey: "You are a playful and light-hearted individual with insatiable curiosity. More so than others with primate daemons, those with squirrel monkeys are cheeky and get by [on] the skin of their teeth. They are humorous people with a quick energy about them."
Diana (Doctor Wormwood):
Diana is extroverted, sometimes intense, very polite except when larping or doing theater tech stuff, very repressed, very angry. Kind of a perfectionist. Bad at prioritizing her own needs.
Badger (Mustelid):
Mustelid: "Those who have weasel daemons are sneaky and inquisitive people who don't take no for an answer when there's something they want. They aren't afraid of breaking rules to get to where they want and are naturally subtle and cheeky individuals."
Badger: "You are a hardworking and confident individual who readily stands up for themselves. More so than others with weasel daemons, those with badgers are competitive and crave success, and they dutifully plan ahead to achieve it. They are private but typically peaceable people, always putting their ambition and sense of organization first."
Angel (Novaglow):
Angel is playful and lighthearted, theatrical and carefree, very sociable and always up for a challenge.
Ocelot (Wild cat):

Wild cat: "Those who have wild cat daemons are proud and confident people who radiate strength. They aren't necessarily the most talkative, but they have the largest presence in the room wherever they go. As natural leaders, the companions of these individuals know it's their way or the highway."
Ocelot: "You are an intuitive and focused individual who is deeply private. More so than others with wild cat daemons, those with ocelots have clear perspective and an interest in discovering what's happening beneath the surface. They are very socially aware and weigh all possible outcomes before making a decision."
Interesting 🤔
I think, of the wildcat options, tiger is actually a better fit, but ocelot isn't too far off at all.
Tiger: "You are a courageous and confident individual who emphasizes balance in your life. More so than others with wild cat daemons, those with tigers are deeply introspective and see their raw emotions as power. They are patient and practical people who have learned just how much they can bite off before they can't chew."
Tama (Le Grand Chevalier):
A diva, a star, very bombastic person with big aspirations and goals.
Stoat (Mustelid):

Stoat: "You are an independent and strong-willed individual with no lack of confidence. More so than others with weasel daemons, those with stoats have a nervous and energetic energy, and are forceful people who would rather ram right into conflict than avoid it. They aren't the hardest of workers, but they're exceptionally stubborn and have an impulsive streak."
Sonam (Solomon):
Withdrawn, closed off, stubborn, a slow-burning but explosive temper.
Barn Owl:

"You are a loyal and perceptive individual who tackles adversity with patience. More so than others with owl daemons, those with barn owls are shy and passive, notorious planners that aren't particularly ambitious, but able to be flexible and adapt to changing situations. They are devoted to their loved ones and dependent on their support."
"a melanistic barn owl may be indicative of a secretive and ostracized person"
Micaela (Veritas):
Headstrong, stubborn, working to dismantle the system from the inside, but also a romantic at heart with a fondness for puns and the great outdoors. Lives on a boat, which ended up relevant because:
Elephant seal (Pinniped):

(LOL)
Pinniped: "Those who have pinniped daemons are cheerful and imaginative people who know how to work hard and play hard. They are known for their boundless creativity and often have their head in the clouds, excelling exceptionally at one area of their life."
Elephant seal (LMAO): "You are a loud and competitive individual who doesn't mind rocking the boat. More so than others with pinniped daemons, those with elephant seals are gregarious and like to brag about their successes. They are creative and strong people who know it."
Pink Gemini:
Very patient, very good at smiling rage. Flaky, inconsistent, showoff, rakish, very competitive. Slightly lackadaisical/"lazy" (adhd) and prefers to slack off, not work hard etc. Life is a game to her, but also she is winning. Or trying to. She is often super manipulative and leading in her charms, but occasionally very blunt. Very spontaneous.
Kookaburra (Cavitave):

Cavitave: "Those who have cavitave daemons are proud and talkative people who are natural showoffs. They thrive in the spotlight and are naturally charismatic and admirable people, though they aren't known for being particularly patient or sincere."
Kookaburra: "You are a confident and gregarious individual who likes to laugh through life. More so than others with cavitave daemons, those with kookaburras are lazy and optimistic, but still maintain an edge when crossed. playful and affectionate people, which often masks their competitive side and the high standards they hold themselves and everyone else to."
by far the funniest result to get for a character I've described as a cross between Harley Quinn, the Taskmaster, and Deadpool.
Black Taurus:
Very closed off, obedient, but does not want to be doing bad things. She is desperate, powerful, very quiet, antisocial, and dependent on others. Super protective. A follower, not a leader, but immensely stubborn and does actually have morals. Devoted above all else to providing for her brother and making sure he is safe.
She does not take time off, she does not play, she is not free to be herself. But when she puts her mind to something, it gets done. She is also far too trusting and gullible, while also being distrusting. It's an odd balance.
Chow (Domestic Dog):

Domestic dog: FUCK. SHE SURE IS. "Those who have domestic dog daemons are loyal and service-oriented people who love to be in the presence of others. They offer guidance and protection to those they cherish, though are typically obedient to an individual, cause, or service."
Chow: "You are an aloof but protective individual who is hard to get to know but easy to love. More so than others with dog daemons, those with chows hold others at a distance until they know they can trust them. They are the guardians of their friends and strong-willed when they know something is wrong. A darker-colored chow may indicate someone more independent and private."
I also looked at the other options and considered rottweiler but imo chow works pretty well
Nekromantis:
Gaslight gatekeep girlboss
Snow leopard (wild cat):

Snow leopard: "You are an intuitive and self-reliant individual who maintains a balance in their life. More so than others with wild cat daemons, those with snow leopards are known for their independence and quiet wisdom. They are often socially removed, deeply internal and concerned with philosophy or big picture issues."
Like money and profit. Lmao.
Lilith (The Psykopomp):
Walled-off, bitter, envious, dramatic and secretly in need of tenderness and being known.
Caracal (wild cat):

Caracal: "You are an observant and thoughtful individual who is deeply private. More so than others with wild cat daemons, those with caracals are independent and self-preserving, excelling in the specific area of life they've carved out for themselves. They have strong boundaries and prefer to only depend on themselves."
Cyberstorm:
Internet troll, porn addict. Wildly antisocial but also very outgoing online, but very introverted irl, with basically no friends.
Falcon (raptor):

Raptor: "Those who have raptor daemons are intellectual and precise, though unlike other bird daemons they also symbolize active and ambition. They are logical but confident, often preferring to work alone in relentless pursuit of their goals."
Falcon: "You are an intense and shrewd individual. More so than others with raptor daemons, those with falcons are highly tenacious and obsessive over their goals. They are efficient and driven, observant people who become restless when they have nothing to focus their attention on."
Miserychord:
Considers themself to be a mercy killer, but ultimately they have been led astray by the notion of humanity's supposed inherent evil.
Sphynx cat:
Domestic Cat: "Those who have domestic cat daemons are proud survivalists who look before they leap. They have a special connection with luck and like to expand upon their natural talents, though you can expect them to get going when the going gets tough."
Sphynx: "You are a mischievous and outgoing individual who is known for their wit. More so than others with cat daemons, those with Sphynxes tend to be cunning and ambitious. They always have their eye on the prize and hate being bored. A solid-colored black Sphynx indicates someone more ambitious and devious."
Such a funny result for the dark mori-kei goth psionic bowman.
Luce (Arcana Royale):
(Diana's older brother) Idealist, like, wow. Very Law Abiding. Gets up early, stays up late. Wants to be part of something big, wants to live up to expectations, never let anyone down. Can be a little self-absorbed/arrogant and prideful lol, does not like to sacrifice his pride or be humiliated, even though he wants to always help those in need. He is more calm than Diana, but still can get pretty rowdy. More patient, still intense.
Fjord horse:

huh.
Equine: "Those who have equine daemons are free-spirited and victorious, known to follow their hearts in pursuing their dreams. Though willful, their dislike for conflict lands them in positions of helping others. Even still, their deeply value their own ideas and are led by their big dreams."
Fjord Horse: "You are a strong-hearted and plucky individual who doesn't let anything get them down. More so than others with equine daemons, those with Fjords are eager to rise to challenges and have boundless determination. They are known for their hardworking, gregarious, and supportive nature."
Daniel Saint-Fleur (The Harvestman):
Oh buddy. Closed off, private, untrusting, deeply repressed, afraid, dutiful, unhappy, resigned to his fate as nothing more than a weapon. Would recoil at the idea that he is selfish, because of the way he has been groomed. Thinks he is lazy, worthless. Driven in like… being perfect.
Got a fucking...
Bandicoot (Marsupial):

Marsupial: "Those who have marsupial daemons are protective and giving people who typically have an unusual or quirky perspective on life. They are creative individuals good at inspiring their loved ones, notably quiet until something riles them up." Interesting…
Bandicoot: "You are a private and anxious individual with a determined streak. More so than others with marsupial daemons, those with bandicoots are independent people who don't often trust others; they have strong boundaries and are defensive when they're pushed. They're very proactive and focused on accomplishments, and are intense about ensuring the success of their projects."
It's like, on the money And Yet. SO fucking funny. Guy rolls up in all black, leather duster, steel horse of a motorcycle, skull mask, double-wielding blue-glowing mana revolvers… and his familiar is a bandicoot.
Instachill:
Judgmental, easily annoyed, "get out of my way!" Surprisingly charismatic/socially skilled despite being kind of harsh and standoffish. Not willing to sacrifice everything, or even just pride, just for some dumb goal; driven but knows when to quit. Extremely competitive and cutthroat. Not nice.
Osprey (raptor):

Osprey: "You are a precise and observant individual who seeks to master challenges. More so than others with raptor daemons, those with ospreys are more emotionally in-tune with themselves. They are patient but decisive when they are moved to act, and are unafraid of authority who go against their moral compass."
A sea bird is weirdly fitting for cold powers.
Unnamed Mushroom Lady:
(I'll get to it.)
I'm weird. I'm a weirdo. I don't fit in. And I don't want to fit in. Please love me. Opinionated esp about the law and its unfairness. Thinks she is the smartest person in any given room. Kind of arrogant. Fiercely independent. Very adaptable.
Pika (Lagomorph):

Lagomorph: "Those who have rabbit daemons are observant and prosperous people known for their anxious energy. They prepare for the worst and never expect the best, and they most relish their creative downtime with others in the comforts of home."
Pika: "You are a dutiful and stubborn individual who always plans ahead. More so than others with rabbit daemons, those with pikas are introverted and like their alone time, and prefer to go about things independently. They are proud people who most value their own opinion, and they don't hesitate about asserting themselves to others."
Geoff Rust (Ozymandias):
Asswipe. CEO. Like if Norman Osborn was Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk.
Lion (wild cat):

Lion: "You are an authoritative and courageous individual who has a large sense of dignity. [...] Those with lions are drawn towards leading causes and have a natural brash and self-assured nature. They are proud and just people, whose confidence makes their tempers flare when challenged."
"When deciding on your daemon's appearance, consider if your lion bears a mane. A lion with a dark mane could indicate an individual who is commanding and private. [...] Large manes would imply someone who is established and overflows with confidence."
I mean, if we go by His Dark Materials rules it would be a lioness but if we're just assigning him a fursona, I'd do a big, dark mane.
Worst part about Rust getting a lion is he would be soooo fucking smug about it too lmao
I also did some for minor/supporting characters but this post is too long so I'll just do a bulleted list:
Irma: Sea lion
Bijou: Komodo dragon
Casey: Clydesdale (imo white or gray prince charming style)
Mark: Woodpecker (either pileated or downy imo)
Saleha: Ladybug 🐞
Deacon: Blue Jay (LOL) (Steller's Jay)
Mei: Roadrunner
Mar: Cape Buffalo
Madelyn: Wildebeest
(For reference: all the possible results are on this spreadsheet made by colombiche)

Why was Victor golden in the Titans series (the devin grayson one)
I figured you would know because you know alot about DC comics
This question makes me so happy because a) I get to rec one of my favorite comics of all time and b) the answer is unintentionally hilarious.
So basically, some years prior, Vic's body had been pretty much completely destroyed and his consciousness was absorbed into a hive mind of computer intelligences called the Technis. Then when the Technis was destroyed, Vic basically had a breakdown. In the absolutely excellent JLA/Titans: The Technis Imperative, he came back to Earth, took over the moon, kidnapped everyone who had ever been a Titan, and put them in little eggs underground where they would be safe and happy because they were his friends and he loved them. You know, like you do.
The Titans escaped from the eggs and were like "Buddy...no..." and eventually Gar yelled at Vic enough that he was like "Okay I will stop being a disembodied consciousness that has conquered the moon," but this didn't fix the problem of Vic having no body. Luckily, the Titans happened to have a suit of morphing alien armor lying around that could house Vic's consciousness!
The suit of armor? Was called the Omegadrome.
(This was years before omegaverse was a thing, and also the Omegadrome was created by a previous Titans writer and not Devin Grayson, but I like to think she's amused by it now.)
Anyway, Vic's consciousness was ported into the Omegadrome and now he looked like a beautiful gold man who was naked all the time. Gar wasted no time getting up on that:

The gold body is especially fun because Vic can also shapeshift. He didn't love it, though, because the complete lack of organic body parts made him feel extremely disconnected to his humanity no matter how many times Gar tearfully professed his love. I am not exaggerating about Gar's behavior even a little bit, I swear to god.)
(Dick later revealed that he had cloned Vic's body, an extremely normal thing to do (this is where Tim got it from!!!), and Vic was able to shift into his cloned body but keep his shapeshifting abilities. He later lost those abilities in Geoff Johns's Flash run and went back to being 1980s-style Cyborg, because Geoff Johns is the most boring thinker imaginable.)
Anyway, you should read JLA/Titans, it has every single character of 1998 in it and they are all having every single feeling. Seriously, this story is absolutely epic in scope, the character work is impeccable, and Phil Jimenez's art is, as always, exquisite. Whoever your blorbo is, if they were around in 1998, they are in this book, having emotions and looking beautiful. It is also the absolute pinnacle of Vic/Gar and the reason I consider "Hey rust-bucket! Let go of the frickin' moon already, will ya?" to be one of the most romantic lines in all of comics. PLEASE READ IT.

My Heart Breaks For You
Teaser: He must be alarmed, panicking even, as I stand trembling before him, wondering if I can keep my composure enough to tell him what I witnessed at the prison with even a mite of dignity. Breathe. I need to breathe. My shuddering breath, it seems, is the only thing over which I have control right now. Everything else is slipping out of my grasp. Will: gone, and now hurt. Runners: arrested and even dying. Jamie: cracking apart day by day.
Colette
I stumble away from the prison walls. Numbness engulfs my entire body, and not just because of the wind that blows brittle, rust-coloured leaves from the trees and bites into my skin with sharp, icy teeth.
I should have known coming here was a bad idea. A foolhardy idea, and dangerous to boot. But what choice did I have? By this morning, the marketplace was already buzzing with the news: yet again, a wicked thief had targeted one of the finest families in town, and the constables had carted away yet another burglar in chains under the cloak of midnight. It didn’t take me long to learn that it was the Smiths who summoned the constabulary in the night, or to surmise that it was yet another of our runners who’d been arrested—this time, a girl I’d hand-picked for the job.
That girl, that runner—what name did I give her? Robin?—now facing conviction or, if recent events are a portent of what’s coming, execution.
Frustration fueled each wary step as I cut through the crowd toward the jailhouse, leaving Geoff to his own information-gathering under the guise of shopping. I only went snooping near the prison to look for new signage, to see if the constables planned to hang the girl, too. I didn’t expect to see anything happening within the prison-yard’s walls.
A restless crowd—babbling excitedly and gathering near the gates—drew me closer despite my apprehension, more than just macabre curiosity pulling me into the throng.
Not daring to ask anyone what was going on, I snaked through the crowd to get as close to the wrought-iron fence as my courage—and good sense—permitted. Titters, mocking laughter, and jeering calls swelled around me at the grim scene being performed at the jail yard’s whipping post.
“See what happens when you think you’re too good to follow the law?”
“Make sure it hurts!”
“Make ’im bleed!”
Now, I close my eyes against the memory, wishing I could forget every moment of the sick pantomime that played out there.
Exactly what prompted the second act of the constables’ horrid performance, I’m still unsure of—something involving Will’s temper and caustic tongue, I’m sure of it—but I’ll never be able to unsee the stripes that awful man painted across his back. Or the way his limp body hit the ground when they were done with him.
“Spider?”
I don’t know where Geoff came from, or how I’ve made it back to the marketplace, or how many times he had to say my name before I heard it.
“What is it?”
He must be alarmed, panicking even, as I stand trembling before him, wondering if I can keep my composure enough to tell him what I witnessed at the prison with even a mite of dignity. Breathe. I need to breathe. My shuddering breath, it seems, is the only thing over which I have control right now. Everything else is slipping out of my grasp. Will: gone, and now hurt. Runners: arrested and even dying. Jamie: cracking apart day by day.
“Spider? You sick?”
“No. Yes. No.” I force back the tears that are battling viciously to escape, determined to be the victor. “How am I going to tell him?”
Geoff stiffens. “Who? What?”
Although I want nothing more than to spill the whole wretched story, I wait. “We should keep moving.” Standing still offers too many opportunities for nosy people to overhear…the last thing we need right now.
He walks stiffly with his hands at his sides, a crude mockery of the soldiers and constables who hunt us every day. His face is unreadable to anyone else who might try to discern any emotion in his gaze, but I know him well enough to see the tension lurking there. Swallowing a fresh batch of tears—get back, you fuckers—I suck in a deep breath. Geoff is a good listener, and except for perhaps Will, he knows Jamie better than anyone. He’ll have some idea of what to do.
I launch into the story—how I snuck into the crowd just in time to see Will being disciplined in front of everyone, how that evil constable picked some girl and made her count each strike, how Will fucked himself over even more by mouthing off—even though I couldn’t fully hear what he said, it was quite clear what was happening—and subsequently getting flogged with the cat-o’-nine-tails.
Geoff is silent as he listens, his eyes fixed upon the road in front of us. As my words die out, I watch his hands curl into fists, the only hint he’s heard a single thing I’ve said. And that he’s fucking pissed about it.
“Bastards,” he growls. “Every single one of them.”
Icy rain is falling now, sharp jabs of freezing fucking water pricking into my face and hands. I adjust the hood of my cloak, pulling it farther over my face as I watch the drops splatter against the ground. The smell of rain is usually so comforting, but here in the thick of the city, all I can smell is wet wool and misery. “I have to tell him, right?”
Only the raindrops answer at first as Geoff considers. “He’ll…want to know Fox is still alive.”
Turning my face away, I wipe my eyes. “It might kill him.”
“It won’t.”
“But it might.”
“But it won’t.” Geoff tilts his head toward the sky, apparently unbothered by the frigid water pelting him in the face. “Don’t go into detail.”
“I can’t lie,” I whisper. “Not to him.” Another thought strikes me. “And…that crowd… So many were there, watching. Enjoying it. People—they’ll talk. He might hear about it anyway.”
With a shake of his head, he says, “You don’t have to lie. Tell him you saw Fox, and if he asks for more, tell him he was shooting off his mouth and he got whipped and leave it at that.” Geoff forces out each word through gritted teeth, and even though I know he isn’t directing his anger at me, I flinch anyway.
Perhaps he notices, for when he speaks again, his voice holds a touch more gentleness, his ire reined in. “It’ll fuck with him no matter what you say, Spider. Don’t put those pictures in his head, too.”
Perhaps he’s right.
Thankfully, thankfully, Jamie is where we left him—at the table, now littered with coins he’s organized into neat stacks. He sits dividing those meagre funds, all we have left, into care packages. The clink of coins mingles with the patter of rain against the roof and window, another sound that typically brings me solace but today makes me want to cover my ears and scream. When he speaks, he doesn’t look up from his counting. “What news?”
The question, which should be so very simple, pierces me like a blade. “Well, hello to you, too, Alpha.” Desperate. Forced. That’s how I sound. Can he tell I’m trying too hard to seem normal? Jamie glances at me for a moment, his suspicion piqued, but he continues his task.
“Constabulary caught another runner,” I say. Already, my heart is trembling. I fear that if I speak too carelessly and say the wrong thing, I may fall into a chasm whose bottom I cannot see—and that Jamie will tumble down with me. “The girl at the Smith house.”
That freezes him mid-count. “Another one.” It isn’t a question; rather, it is a dull repetition. Flat and emotionless.
In response, I nod, though he isn’t really looking at me. Shadows, born fluid and slippery from the guttering fire, dance on the walls and across his face. “I… I told her. To get out. The day of the execution, I passed a message and told her to scarper.” When I look down, I see the dirt caught beneath my fingernails, the stains on my skin from gripping a rusty wrought-iron bar too tightly. “I told her to be careful. I guess it wasn’t enough.”
Geoff murmurs a response from where he’s grinding tea leaves with the mortar and pestle, and I remember only then that I didn’t tell either of them I slipped a note to the runner that day. “That was stupid, Spider. And reckless.”
“I know.” At the time, I thought it was the right thing to do. Now, I’m not so sure. What if she rushed because I frightened her into running off too hastily? If the constables hang her too, will her death weigh on my conscience?
Jamie swallows. Thinks. Stares. What he says, when he opens his mouth, meeting my gaze at long last, makes my eyes burn. “We should go, shouldn’t we? It’s time. Really time.”
We’ve discussed it before: Leaving our little home here in the city, the place we scraped up funds for and have worked so goddamn hard to keep. We all knew, from the moment we learned that man was to be hanged, that this day would come, yet none of us could bear to take the leap.
Jamie’s declaration stings. But he’s looking at me like he needs me to answer, needs to know he’s making the right call. “Yes. It is.” I train my gaze on the bookshelf. Most of those volumes are stolen, and most of them by me, but they are treasured nonetheless. Deserting them is going to hurt as much as leaving behind the memories we made here.
“Call off every job,” Jamie says. “Break communication with every runner. No more drops. Every runner for themselves.” One look at our limited stack of care packages has him squeezing his eyes shut, as if he can hide that his eyes are filling with tears. “It’s too dangerous now. For us. For all of them.”
Geoff abandons his tea-making and stands behind Jamie, laying his hands on his shoulders. Our gentle giant, always there when the alpha wolf needs him.
“We’ll deliver what’s left,” he says gently. “We’ll get them out tomorrow. Then we’ll go.”
Jamie can’t see it, but I can, when Geoff meets my eyes and ever so slightly shakes his head. No, he is saying. I was wrong. His gaze is wide, almost frightened. It is not a look I have seen him wear often. Not now. Not tonight.
Perhaps Jamie can sense something, though, because he looks up at me. His hazel eyes, darker than Will’s but similar enough to identify them as brothers if you know what to look for, are grieving—but still suspicious. “Any other news?”
Again, Geoff shakes his head.
I can’t lie. Not to him, I said earlier. In my mind, the conversation I know I must have with Jamie flows easily; my voice is calm and collected, soothing and comforting. I went… I went by the prison. To look for signs, to see if they’ll hang her too. That’s how I would start. Jamie would nod, patiently waiting, and I would go on, I didn’t see any signs, so…not yet, anyway.
No hanging? he would ask, and I’d shake my head. Relief would burst across his features for the briefest moment, and then he’d bring his mask of emotionlessness right back. He would look into my face, though, deep and thoughtful as ever, and he would see the truth seeping through. He would sense it enough to ask the right question. You didn’t see any signs. What did you see there, Spider?
Perhaps Geoff and I are cowards.
“I didn’t see any signs for a hanging.” This is the test, then—if Jamie Wardrew can really read my face the way I’m terrified he can. “Guess she’s not up for execution.” Yet.
Jamie waits.
“That’s all,” I say, heading for the mortar and pestle. “Hare, if you’re going to make tea, at least finish the job.” The scrape of cast-iron rustles the air as I hang the kettle over the fire.
“Sorry, Spider.”
The lie festers under my skin. How could we—How could I do this to him?
Forgive me, Jamie. It is ludicrous that Geoff is apologizing to me over a contrived conflict over tea leaves, when the person who deserves the apology is sitting at our table with his world falling apart more than he even realizes. Forgive me, Will. He wouldn’t like us to deceive his brother. But he wouldn’t want to see Jamie heartbroken, either.
Forgive me, both of you. I glance over at Geoff, but he’s not looking at me anymore—too tangled up in embracing Jamie, leaving me to stand alone by the rain-splattered window, mired in guilt. To gasp for breath and scrabble for freedom, because the threads of our merciful lie are coiled around my neck like strangling vines.
No, not like vines.

The Wreck of the Mary Rose (Part1)
The Mary Rose a relic from the Tudor period was launched in 1511 as a carrack with 78-91 guns. She was involved in the naval battle in Solent. A French fleet commanded by Claude d'Annebault had been sent to the coast of Great Britain during the Italian Wars. It arrived at Solent in July 1545. Her target was an invasion of the Isle of Wight and the destruction of an English fleet to which the Mary Rose belonged. On 19 July 1545 the warship sank in the evening. The reason for the sinking is controversial. In the aftermath of the accident and in modern times, it was mostly argued that the ship had been turned sideways due to a lack of stability and had thus absorbed water. On deck of the ship there were about 400 - 600 men.

The carrack Mary Rose as depicted in the Anthony Roll. The distinct carrack profile with high "castles" fore and aft can clearly be seen. Although the number of guns and gun ports is not entirely accurate, the picture is overall an accurate illustration of the ship
In addition, the gun ports were open. Probably during a turning manoeuvre the list was strengthened, in addition a gust possibly came. Due to the weight of the heavy cannons in particular and the additional crew, the ship was possibly deeper in the water than in earlier years, so that the open ports would have been only one meter above the waterline - too low not to take up any water on the list side. It was also discussed to what extent the crew did not lead the ship properly, possibly even refused orders, which could have led to a poorly executed turning manoeuvre. A shoal a few hundred meters away could also have led to a hasty maneuver; however, the sinking Mary Rose could have been deliberately steered to the shoal to prevent complete sinking.

The sinking of the Mary Rose by Geoff Hunt
Alternatively, it was discussed that the French had hit the Mary Rose cannon. In contemporary reports, this view was held only by one Frenchman. More recently, however, Dominic Fontana, a geographer at the University of Portsmouth, agreed that the ship might have been hit just above the waterline; the incoming water might have caused the list and ultimately the sinking, and she sank very quickly, tipped over to her starboard side and stayed there.
The Lord Admiral, John Dudley, who had commanded the English fleet at the battle and had witnessed the loss of the Mary Rose, entrusted her recovery to Southampton-based Venetian salvage operators Petre de Andreas and Symone de Maryne. They planned to use a traditional method for recovering ships; running cables under the ship’s hull, which would be pulled taut by two larger vessels (in this case, the 700-ton carracks, the Sampson and the Jesus of Lubeck), bringing the Mary Rose towards the surface so she could be moved to shallower water, where she could be emptied of her contents then pumped out, allowing her to float once more. This method was, and still is, commonly used in underwater salvage; the Swedish Vasa was raised using this technique, and more recently the cruise ship Costa Concordia was refloated in a similar manner.

The Mary Rose in seabed 1545, unkown
The original plan had to been to raise the Mary Rose on 3rd August 1545, 15 days after her loss. This should have been a simple operation; she had sunk in reasonably shallow water, with her masts protruding above sea level. Venetians were considered to be experts in the field of wreck salvage, so the Admiralty obviously had high hopes.
On 5th August, it was reported that the sails and yard arms had been brought ashore, and her masts had been secured by cables, and two days later, the Duke of Suffolk, Charles Brandon, informed the Secretary of State, William Paget, that the Mary Rose would be raised “…this afternoon or tomorrow”. By 9th August, all that had been achieved was the snapping of the Mary Rose’s masts, delaying the raising operation further. After six more days of effort, they had still failed to move her. On 8th December, they were paid 40 Marks (about £27), and were told that their services would no longer be required. This wasn’t the end of the story, though, as although the Mary Rose had been given up, there was still her contents that needed recovering.

The Mary Rose as she would have appeared some time after sinking, when parts of the starboard side are beginning to erode, by Jon Adams
There were nearly £2,000,000 worth of guns on board (in modern money), and when the country was short of money thanks to the king's excessive spending, that was a lot of cash to leave rusting on the sea bed. In 1547, £37 11s 5d was paid out for the removal of anchors and weapons, while £20 was paid out for similar work. But considering the small number of guns found, it's likely they were stolen. Soon she was forgotten and due to the sea currents, she lost almost her entire backboard side. But not only the wood was removed, also sand and mud was carried on her and so the remains of the Mary Rose were well protected.

Around the World in 20 Pages
Hey there, bug fables. I think I'm probably out of the long-winded lead-ins by issue 3, so let's just jump into another New 52 Teen Titans review~
Here's the cover:
For a moment I thought Tim here had skates built into his shoes--not the right place for Heelys, but close enough--but it's actually just his logo. Because that's the best place to put your logo. In contrast, Bunker shows off his greatest power: his own Hulk Hands! Truly, he is the greatest hero on this team.
We pick up immediately where we left off last time, with Kid Flash encountering Solstice. This is probably a good place to introduce the character. Kiran Singh is a girl from India with light-based powers. She was actually introduced in the last ten or so issues of the previous Teen Titans series (the Geoff Johns era, though not created by him). As you might expect from a series that went on for 100 issues (especially in DC), it got a bit dour sometimes, and Kiran was a bright spot in those issues--literally and figuratively. So of course, instead of the bright golden look she had that also reflected her Indian heritage, the New 52 reinterprets her as a black void of smoke with glowing cracks all over her. Honestly, a fitting metaphor for everything the New 52 did~
Solstice begs Kid Flash to leave her behind, but Kid Flash won't give up on someone. This leads to a confusing two-page spread where he races all over the facility to retrieve a hose to tie Solstice up so he can carry her. It's not very well done, as you can tell by the fact that they had to number it and draw a line from each sequence, since it doesn't flow naturally. Comics are supposed to be sequential storytelling, right? Not scattershot storytelling. Anyways, they escape the facility, and discover that they're being held in the Antarctic. Solstice demonstrates another of her powers is being a jinx, as she comments that Kid Flash can't have that great traction running on ice while in sneakers. So it is of course at that moment that he slips, and the pair of them tumble into an enormous ravine.
But the survival of these characters isn't important! Instead we cut to "the badlands"--any old badlands, it doesn't matter--where a kid in a sweater vest and John Lennon sunglasses jumps aboard a passing train. Once inside the car, he discovers a huge mysterious cocoon and freaks out a little bit. He freaks out even more when a grizzled old crusty guy appears behind him and puts a grizzled old crusty hand on his shoulder. Even in superhero comics, we still have train hobos. Before we can pick up on that, though, we're gonna cut away again.
So here's a one-page scene showing us that the Teleport Trio actually survived and are alive in the hospital. Cassie enters and threatens him to give up who hired him. It then cuts away yet again to show Solstice learning to fly with her powers, saving herself and Kid Flash. And then we cut back to Bunker and his hobo buddy, because this comic has fucking ADHD. I can't wait until all these people are on the same team, so we can stop cutting away to see what they're doing. Bunker and the hobo shared an apple, and the hobo points out that no one with clothes as nice as Bunker's needs to be sneaking onto a train he could buy a ticket to ride.
Things suddenly get tense, and the hobo kicks Bunker across the face. Usually you have to prod them into bum fights, but here we are. Bunker demonstrates his powers of making psionic bricks. Basically, he's a Green Lantern who can only make bricks. It's actually a pretty neat power, if you're clever and played with Lego a lot. The hobo then suddenly pulls off his face--takes his face... off--revealing he's actually Tim Drake in disguise. This actually ends the fight instantly, since Bunker has actually been following Tim's career and wants to team up. He changes into his costume and volunteers his service. And in case you were wondering, Skitter's the thing in the cocoon, conveniently writing her out of the issue~
The train stops abruptly, and Tim and Bunker take a look outside. They immediately start talking about how all the people look possessed and zombified, but the art doesn't convey this at all. They may be slightly lurching towards our heroes, arms outstreched, but they look like healthy, smiling people. Tim points out that this can't be the work of NOWHERE, because NOWHERE exclusively focuses on those age 20 and under, and these people are multi-generational. They're never going to be a successful terrorist group if they don't broaden your demographic appeal. Tim flies off to find the source of the hypnosis, while Bunker keeps them out with his bricks.
Upon landing on a big radio tower, Tim notices some of the equipment is much newer than the tower itself, and must be the problem. It's at this point he's attacked by a big scrap-pile goon. Like, imagine Clayface, but instead of clay, he's made of rusted bits of metal and wire and other mechanical bits. He calls himself Detritus and brags about how he's an AI that suddenly became intelligent, now intending to wipe out humanity. He reaches for Tim, and then the next page shows Tim landing gently back on the train. He's mumbling about how he has to remember, repeating Detritus' name... and then smiles and gives a canned explanation to Bunker about how he found something on the radio tower and disabled it, and everything is good now.
Well, with Tim either under mind control or at the very least amnesia, the issue ends on two revelations. The first is that Skitter's cocoon has opened up and dumped Skitter back out--a completely human Skitter, with no idea where she is. The second is back in Antarctica, where the cold is finally taking its toll on Kid Flash and Solstice, and they're about to pass out. As he fades into unconsciousness, Kid Flash notices that he seems to have wandered from the snows onto... a cheerful, paved street...?
While I didn’t have super serious complaints about the first two issues, I do have them here. Namely, the comic’s inability to focus. It seriously keeps jumping from character to character, with no time to settle on any one plot point. Cassie appears for only one page, wherein it’s implied she tortures somebody who’s already in the hospital. Like, we didn’t have to cut away, we could’ve just had the Bunker plot and then the Kid Flash plot. It just feels really unfocused, which makes it difficult to read. Like I said, can’t wait for them to be a team so we can focus on them collectively~
Next issue, we’ll follow up on what is undoubtedly the introduction of Danny the Street. I’m... unsure about how to feel about that. Again, we’ll get into it next issue~
