On This Day (30 Aug) in 1596, George Gower was buried in the churchyard of St Clement Danes, London.
Tumblr media
The burial records from the church document the burial of "Mr Gower Sergeant paynter to her Majestie".
Gower's career appears to have begun in the 1570s, and was later appointed as 'Serjeant Painter' to Elizabeth I in 1581. This role made him responsible for the maintenance and commissioning of paintings and furnishings in royal residences, as well as providing him with access to paint members of the court/nobility.
Gower has been credited with the portraits of Lettice Knollys, Countess of Leicester, and her sister Elizabeth, Lady Leighton.

'The Hampden Portrait' of Queen Elizabeth I of England, 1563 formerly attributed to Steven van der Meulen (active 1543-1568) National Portrait Gallery says "…as both van der Meulen and van Herwijck died in the 1560s the artist responsible for 'The Hampden Portrait' must remain as an as yet unidentified émigré" In 2020, Edward Town attributed the Hampden portrait of Elizabeth I, now dated ca. 1567, and several others formerly attributed to van der Meulen, to George Gower, Elizabeth's Serjeant painter.
The painting was probably painted with suitors in mind and it is full of Tudor symbolism. In her right hand she is holding a carnation flower which was an attribute of the Blessed Virgin Mary and represents here being the Handmaid of God and the Queen of Heaven (England). The flower is also a symbol of love and marriage and can be interpreted here as a public declaration of the Queen's intention to marry

Sinnvolle Maßnahme mit einmal mehr coronaverklebtem Hirn: Einfach den alten Fluss dahinfließen lassen. Und dahinfließen. Macht er sowieso. Und die Handlung ist eh nicht so wichtig. Diesmal wieder in Technicolor.
