Haunted Tomb of a Torturer
One of the most haunted properties in Scotland, Greyfriars’ Kirkyard, sits behind the base of Edinburgh Castle near an area called Grassmarket in Edinburgh.
In the 1600s, thousands of Scottish Presbyterian Covenanter were imprisoned in Greyfriars’ Kirkyard for not converting to the Church of England. George Mackenzie was the Lord Advocate to the King in Edinburgh. It was his responsibility to punish the men, women, and children prisoners as he saw fit. It is said he personally enjoyed his work. The prisoners were tortured, left out in the elements during the winter, starved, and beheaded. During his time as Lord Advocate, he killed over 18,000 fellow Scots. His reign was known as The Killing Time. The ground was often red and coppery smelling from the blood, gore, and bodies. Even today it is said that the soil is 10% human DNA.
The dead prisoners were buried in mass, unmarked graves in the back of the lot near where they spent their last days suffering but dying for what they believed.
Upon his death, George MacKenzie was buried just feet away from the site of his horrific war crimes. The grave also borders the mass graves of prisoners and plague victims.
One night a vagrant vandalized the tomb of George and his family. The coffins were opened and remains defiled. During the assault, the floor of the tomb collapsed and the man fell into a pit of buried plague victims. The man was killed by the fall or perhaps the sheer horror of falling into a pit of human remains.
The next morning a young woman found the vandalized tomb and the dead man in the pit. As she rushed to find authorities, she began to feel as if something was choking her and she passed out. When she was found, there were finger marks on her neck.
Since then many visitors have reported scratches, burns, and bruises. It is said that the spirit of George MacKenzie was awakened and vengeful, blaming the common folk for disrupting his peace. He has since become known as one of the most active poltergeists in the world. Thousands of visitors have documented scratches and marks while visiting Greyfriars.
There is no doubt, due to the horrific history drenched with tortured souls on blood soiled grounds, the testimonies of poltergeist activity and the abundant evidence that has been collected through the years, this is one of the most haunted cemeteries in the world.

while im in the process of clipping some fun bits from the first smosh vs aliens episode. i want to take a post to give george his flowers as GM for this bc. WOW. he bounces so well off of every single person in cast and plays up the humor so well. AND the way he plays the parents of each of the characters gives them so much additional depth and heart.
Like Mary and Tampa are both excellent characters already but the way George plays off of them- playing into comedic elements, pulling it back to very clear affection and showing how much these moms love their kids, establishing characterization of both the moms and the kids with little one liners and bits- makes them even better! Also means its gonna hurt like HELL later on!
And on the flipside, the way he plays Tabitha and Mackenzie's parents (and siblibgs) drives home the specific ways in which their characters are struggling or left hanging at points, and the real humanity and realities there. Gut punch in other ways.
Its all really neatly and effectively done. AND. on top of it being excellent characterization. Its also so funny! He plays into the comedy of it really well. its really good all around idk.

KING GEORGE VI and QUEEN ELIZABETH with Canadian Prime Minister MACKENZIE KING in Banff, Canada, 1939
What impressed me most when I found the King shaking my hand and looking at me was the blend of amiability and good sense in his face. It was a kindly and sincere face and also a face that looked very familiar. He has large blue eyes, a generous mouth and thick light brown hair, with a lock just above his forehead that has a way of blowing down over his eyes so that he has to push it back when he stands bareheaded in the open air as he so often does.
- Francis Stevens, Leader-Post reporter who met the King during the Canadian tour

THE CROCK OF GOLD by James Stephens. (1912) Art binding by Bayntun. Illustrated by Thomas Mackenzie.
This comic novel is a mixture of philosophy, Irish folklore and the "battle of the sexes", it consists of six parts: The Coming of Pan, The Philosopher's Journey, The Two Gods, The Philosopher's Return, The Policemen, and The Thin Woman's Journey. It rotates around a philosopher and his quest to find the most beautiful woman in the world — Cáitilin Ni Murrachu, daughter of a remote mountain farm — and deliver her from the gods Pan and Aengus Óg, while himself going through a catharsis.

Please note: Rose's father (Commander Wharton) is also a High Commander. I do not know if it is a mistake but George's stars are ↕️ when Kyle's are ↔️.

Please note: Joseph wore a star in Season 3.
I do not know what the colors of the circles surrounding the stars mean. Sometimes they are black, white or yellow. In S3E03, at Lawrence's house, all Commanders' circles are black.

King George VI and Mackenzie King (pictured at Buckingham Palace)
**************************
Reflecting on the American section of the trip, Mackenzie King assured the King it had surpassed all expectations…
“This trip has made a great deal to me, and a great deal to the Queen,” the King replied. He said it had been all about developing a “new idea of kingship” which was more in tune with the people and their interests – “no more the high-hat business, the kind of thing that my father and those of his day regarded as essential, as the correct attitude, that certain things could not be done, everything was to be just in such and such a way”…
Most revealing, though, were the insights the King gave into his attitudes to the throne. “When my father was alive, he filled an important place, was much before the public,” he told Mackenzie King. “My brother was equally prominent before the public. I was kept in the background. My father used to tell me I could never do anything because I could not speak.” Indeed, before George V’s death, when he could see the way things might go, he had gone to Sandringham with a view to telling his father he would not accept the throne – but never did so.
