Why are endings so hard to write? My tip for writing an epilogue.

I know, right! Sounds weird. (Is this controversial? Do you already do this? Let me know ๐๐ป)
๐๐๐๐ฅ ๐ ๐ ๐ข๐จ๐ง: Have you ever heard a writer say 'you can never really know how a book should start until you've written the end'?
In a similar way, I think ๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป'๐ ๐ธ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐, ๐บ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐๐ณ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ถ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ ๐ด๐ผ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ผ ๐ฏ๐ฒ ๐๐ป๐๐ถ๐น ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฐ๐น๐ผ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ถ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐ - in other words, it's been through some editing.
What if it uses a plot point that doesn't end up in your finished book? Or you call back to a scene that got taken out? (Maybe this is a pantser problem...)
That's why I don't write epilogues as part of a first draft anymore.

My debut romance novel, Four Night Stand, is finally out there in the world! ๐๐ ๐๐ Blurb below cut.
Four Night Stand is a standalone, steamy workplace romance.
~ Two colleagues. One conference. No strings attached? ~
Two people who've been burned by past lovers settle for a conference fling while secretly wanting more.
TROPES: workplace romance | dual POV | open door spice | set in Sydney | she falls first, he falls harder | fling to forever
Two people who've been burned by past lovers settle for a conference fling while secretly wanting more.
Jules lives in her comfort zone. Years ago, taking a risk left her dumped and heartbroken, and now the status quo is her safe space. It's not so bad. She lives with two awesome friends, has a manageable crush on Cameron, a colleague she's never met in person, and her job ... well, she used to love her IT job at a publishing company. Now it feels like ticking a box. So when she's asked at the last minute to attend a conference, she figures it could be the thing she needs to reinspire her. And then she finds out Cameron is coming too.
Cameron left his last workplace abruptly after a break-up gone wrong. In a new city and a new team, he's content to keep everyone at arm's length so there's no chance of the past repeating. Except for one person in the IT department who always answers his calls for help, and shares his humour and taste in music. But they've never met face-to-face, so it doesn't count. Until they get sent to a conference together and suddenly, Cameron realises it does count. A lot.
Thrown together away from the office and their colleagues, Jules and Cameron decide to have a conference fling. It's risk-free and has a guaranteed amicable ending. But emotions are never predictable ...

FOUR NIGHT STAND is a 90,000-word standalone contemporary romance, perfect for fans of Sally Thorneโs The Hating Game, that would appeal to readers of Amy Andrews, Denise Williams and Tessa Bailey.

My romance short story is out in the world in the @RWAus Sweet Treats anthology. Meet Tanya, a journalist on a deadline, and Matt, the chocolatier she's interviewing.
See below for a sneak peek...
Operation Chocolate Drop
The front door is wide open. I grasp my satchel strap, double-checking the number on the door.
โHello?โ I call.
No reply.
I edge inside, my heels loud on the tiled floor, and am hit with an overpowering scent of chocolate. I wrinkle my nose, feeling like Iโve stepped into Willy Wonkaโs factory.
Thereโs no sign of the owner, so I walk through the entryway and emerge in a kitchen-living-dining-entertainment room. The space feels cramped. Every surface โ from the kitchen island to the coffee table โ is covered in trays holding tiny chocolates. The total number must be astronomical if theyโve spilled into here from the chocolate making facility next door. Iโll have to find out the exact figure for my article.
I pull my notebook from my bag and write the question down. This is my first lifestyle article for the Blue Valley Daily, something Iโve been working towards for two years. I wish I had more time to prepare but Iโm not going to waste this last-minute opportunity to prove myself.
โHello? Matthew?โ I call again.
โComing!โ
The holler sounds from down the hall. I turn, freezing when a man emerges from one of the doors dragging a t-shirt over a well-defined chest smattered with blond hair.
I snap my jaw shut as heat spreads over my cheeks.
That never happened at any of my interviews for the real estate section. It hasnโt happened in a while for me, period. Being alone in a house with an attractive man, that is. Not since I dumped Colin.
But now isnโt the time to be thinking about that as the man walks over and holds out a hand. I shake it, getting lost in his warm brown eyes.
