just a fun question: what are your favorite gintama endings and/or openings?

okay so I initially started trying to answer this while half asleep but it wasn’t even comprehensible so I’m trying again now that im a little more awake. i’m more biased towards the ops (I skipped a lot of the endings oops, had like 200+ episodes to get thru I was in a hurry okay!!!) so expect more of them than endings

the first op (pray) will always be a banger, then there’s op9 (tougenkyou alien) that’s real good too. Op15 (pride kakumei) is another fav too but that’s mostly bc of the visuals but the song is good too

as for endings, my favs are probably ed2(?) (mr raindrop) bc it’s cute and ed19 (anagura) bc the song is good AND bc they actually included my fav character when i didn’t think they would

Gintama: My two cents

So this lengthy post is my consolidated response to 30-Day Gintama challenged posted here on tumblr.

I am entitled to my own opinion and so do you. If you don’t like the content and direction of my writing, feel free to leave and there’s really no need to be crass. Credits are due to the makers and editors of the fanarts I used (randomly grabbed from the internet, those are not mine), and also to the production of the Gintama anime where I took some screenshots. Of course, Gintama is owned by the troll master Sorachi Hideaki.

Why you like Gintama

               I like Gintama because of the unique way it unraveled its story (in no chronological order either, no solid plot and the fourth wall is crumbling, production and the characters are not even trying, and many scenes are blatant plagiarism, recycled and half-assed work). It had its own way of creeping under your skin, and it grows on you. Most importantly its mangaka Sorachi Hideaki is such a tease that when you think you already know where the story is heading, he trolls you and make a fool out of you.

How you discovered Gintama

               A friend recommended it to me because she knew I was enamored with Oguri Shun who was cast as the live action actor for the main character so she recommended that I watch the anime.

Favorite opening song

               Donten by Dozu because there was a version of Gintoki and Hijikata’s Seiyuu singing the song (or trolling the song, idk haha)

Favorite ending song

               Mr. Raindrops because Elizabeth was so damn cute in the video…

This is the Cherry Blossom viewing where once again, Tae is the person bringing the Yorozuya and Shinsengumi together. And just look at the five them (Gintoki, Otae, Shinpachi, Kagura and Sadaharu) enjoying the view of sakura. And this was the first encounter of OkiKagu so yeah!

Favorite Male character

               I am  torn between Hijikata Toshiro and Kotaro Katsura.

Least favorite male character

               It would be Kondo Isao I guess. He actually looked cool when he’s in charge of the Shinsengumi, but his moral compass gets lost when he’s stalking Tae.

Favorite Pairing

It’s Okikagu hands down. Whereas GinTae is like an old married couple for the way they act and the way they understand each other more than words, Okikagu’s dynamics (their rivalry) are mostly immature and childish even for Sogo who is a freaking Shinsengumi officer. Oddly though, Okita and Kagura understand each other with their fists haha. I do think that Okita hides his sublimated sexual attraction to Kagura by provoking her to bite his head off every single time they see each other.

Least favorite pairing

               Gintoki being paired with Tsukuyo.

Favorite episode

               Ep 364 where Sogo’s constant smile as he fought Kagura (cosplaying as Kanna) exposed his feelings for her (this episode is gold haha)

Saddest episode

               When Shogun Shige Shige died :(

Funniest episode

               When Catherine transformed into a very pretty, young woman.

Favorite Arc

               Yagyuu Arc. There’s been a lot of goldmines there for my ships haha.

Least favorite arc

               I think it would be the one where Shinpachi found himself a penpal and he made Okita pose as Patsuan.

I only read the most recent ones actually (because the anime took on a hiatus), so it would have to be the volume containing the Silver Soul Arc (by default).

Why you would recommend Gintama to others

Because

     1. Oguri Shun is Gintoki in the live action <3

      2. Because a very subtle yet deep connection (between Gin and Tae) is woven into the intricately crafted moments spread out in the entire series, building on mutual trust, respect and family among others.

      3. It paved its way to success by plagiarizing/ parodying (most of the time especially the early episodes were parodies of well-known anime and manga)

      4. The cast is composed of strong, independent ladies able to kick asses.

     5.  It’s a welcome breath of fresh air in the anime world because of its twisting (twisted) plot.

Which Gintama ending songs do the Gintama characters like the most?

Here's my take, following up on this post about the openings. Feel free to list yours! Some of these are due to the visuals, others because I feel the song itself could just be something that character would like.

The ending songs will be listed by name here. See this reference post to keep track of which is which. The Yorinuki songs aren't listed there, though.

Gintoki: "Nakama" and "Moonwalk"; also the first Yorinuki Ending song, "Bokutachi no kisetsu", at least musically. It's also the ending song for the animated Benizakura movie. (Of course, it's the Gintoki version of Moonwalk he likes, and not the Kintoki one. The Gintoki version was never shown in the actual anime, but nobody feels like bringing this up.) Shinpachi: "Hana Ichi Monme" Kagura: "Wo Ai Ni" and "Hankô Seimei", with "Acchi Muite" (because Soyo!) and "Silver" (because Mami!) right behind those two

Otae: "Samurai Heart" Otose: "Wonderful Days" Catherine: "Sayonara no Sora" (she's unexpectedly sentimental about graduation episodes) Tama: "Hikari Shômeiron" (she likes all the glimpses from earlier episodes, echoing her own recordings) Katsura: "Acchi Muite" and "Mr Raindrop". Might Not Be Able To Break The Fourth Wall, So This Could Just Be Hypothetical: Isaburo: No ending's elite enough or secretly nihilistic enough, but he might still like "We Gotta Fight", both musically and for the stark visuals. Soyo: "Acchi Muite", "Asa ANSWER"

Definitely Can't Break The Fourth Wall: Takasugi: I think he'd pick "Shura". He'd understand full well that "Glorious Days" is the Gintoki vs Takasugi ending song, but he couldn't pick it, it's too on the nose. Shigeshige: "Sakurane", "Destiny", and "Mr Raindrop" Nobunobu: Surprisingly, "This World Is Yours" Oboro: "Bokutachi ni Kisetsu" is the one he'd keep coming back to and keep watching, followed by "Acchi Muite". But I'm not sure which one he'd actually like the most. Maybe "Hikari Shômeiron", if he would be able to see it? Utsuro: No idea. Maybe "Anagura"?? Shoyo: "Nakama" and "Wonderful Days". And "Bokutachi no Kisetsu".

Gintama: Opening 1/Ending 1 y 2

Hoy hablaré de lo que opino del primer opening y el primer y segundo ending de Gintama.

Aclaro que yo no soy música ni he estudiado nada relacionado con ella y ni siquiera sé tocar ningún instrumento.

Soy una simple fanática de la música que puede hablar de ella y dar su opinión sin afán de ser considerada correcta y por lo mismo es que no les daré rating, simplemente comentaré lo que me parecen y ya está. Esto es mi simple gusto y lo que opino yo de las canciones y de los medios visuales.

Opening 1: Pray by Tommy heavenly6

No conozco el grupo, pero la canción me gusta. No me parece que sea una canción de esas que son inolvidables ni creo que sea una obra maestra, pero tiene un buen ritmo. Tiene ese toque antiguo que tenían los openings de la primera década de los 2000, casi como cierta nostalgia, así que está bien.

La letra es bonita también y los visuales están donde deberían estar para hacer juego con ella. Cuando toca un tema positivo vemos mucho color y cuando hace referencia a lo triste, vemos tonos grises, así que está bien.

En cuanto a las imágenes en sí, no son la gran cosa. Es un opening que sirve para mostrarnos a lo personajes; lo que al fin y al cabo es lo que importa en esta primera etapa de la serie. No nos muestra nada que nos dé indicios de lo que trata el anime (o sea que no hay sopilers), pero está bien porque, de nuevo, estos primeros episodios son introductorios y no se impulsan por una trama específica.

Lo más destacable para mí:

El escúter clásico de Gin -que hasta donde he visto es recurrente en los openings- y Kagura montada en Sadaharu -que también es recurrente-.

La presentación de nuestros personajes principales y el guiño que nos dan de sus personalidades: Gin como amante del azúcar, Shinpachi como un otaku y Kagura como la saca-mocos badass que es.

El Shinsengumi porque siempre lucen geniales... Casi siempre.

Y Sadaharu mordiendo la cabeza de Gin porque sí.

Ending 1: Fuusen Gum by Captain Straydum

Nuevamente, un artista completamente desconocido para mí y honestamente no es de mis canciones favoritas. No es mala, en realidad creo que tiene buen ritmo… bastante buen ritmo de ahora que la escucho completa, pero no es mi tipo de canción.

La letra menciona una escúter, así que es un plus, pero es básicamente lo único que se me quedó en la mente xD

Los visuales tampoco son la gran cosa. Es la típica formula de mostrar los personajes como si fueran los créditos.

Lo destacable:

Katsura y Elizabeth posando en “T” antes de que fuera popular.

Y no es que sea destacable, pero apenas ahora me fijo que Matsudaira aparece junto al resto del Shinsengumi allá al fondo. Ah. Ni en cuenta.

Ending 2: Mr. Raindrop by Amplified

Vamos, seamos honestos, ¿a quién rayos no le gusta este ending? Lo digo en serio. Si no te gusta, no eres fan de Gintama. Es que es increíblemente pegajoso. Y mira que la canción es simplona como ella sola… O sea, la letra es simple, el ritmo es simple y es lo mejor.

Los visuales también son simples. Digo, Elizabeth no es el más complejo de los personajes para dibujar. Igual es perfecto en conjunto.

Lo destacable:

La Yorozuya haciendo lo suyo. Aunque Kagura me da penita. Se ve alicaída porque no puede ir a salir a jugar. Pobrecita.

El Shinsengumi haciendo lo suyo. Apuesto a que Okita está haciendo esos muñecos de vudú para maldecir a Hijikata. Es que tiene toda la pinta. Yamazaki está al fondo… Yamazaki en realidad aparece en esta imagen. Nunca lo había notado. Pobrecito.

Otose, Catherine y Otae. Catherine, no poses así, por favor. No eres una gatita linda. No te queda. Das miedo. Detente. Please.

Y por supuesto, el final que es adorable con Katsura esperando por Elizabeth y ella cubriéndolo de la lluvia. Son preciosos.

the last arc is starting.

It’s a really long last arc and it’s not even done in the manga yet (afaik) so it’s not the end yet but I don’t want Gintama to go. 

Oh, well. Now normally when I’m getting through a multi-episode story arc I save most of my opinions re:overall quality until the end, which means the rest of Gintama Reviews is going to be a whole lot of unfocused, stream of consciousness rambling (so, y’know, basically same as always), and the last one is probably gonna be quite long. We’ll see how things go.

I forgot Kondo has a scar now. I bet he thinks it makes him look cool. It doesn’t.

Nice to know Hasegawa’s still up to the same old shit. I don’t remember the last time he was actually involved in The Plot. Was he ever? Poor Hasegawa. When’s Hijikata coming back.

Okay, so if they’re acknowledging that Japan was isolated before the Amanto showed up, does that mean they’re going back to the original conceit of being set in sci-fi Meiji Era Japan, or is it still the dumb modern day retcon, and they’re just playing fast and loose with history in the way that made me decide to ignore the dumb modern day retcon? Does it matter? Probably not, but this episode has been mostly recap and people waiting around for Our Heroes and is kind of boring so I need something to comment on to keep this review from being 50% Jigglypuff gif.

Oh, Hasegawa got to be cool for almost five whole minutes. How nice for him. When’s Hijikata coming back.

Edo in this show has pretty much always been wooden buildings and dirt roads, but there’s an overhead shot at one point showing modern skyscrapers and pavement, and then it switches back to wooden buildings and dirt, and that’s just weird.

That’s weird how Otae and Tama don’t try and fight the Amanto. It’s fair enough that Otae was probably in shock from seeing Odd Jobs get blowed up but good, but that doesn’t really explain Tama just going along with them.

I like the OP. The song sounds different, and even though most of the credits just kind of float in space the way credits so often do, the stuck the actual song credit on a billboard, which is pretty neat.

No one makes a joke about how no one uses Gin-san’s ‘terminal’ after Otae and Tama damage it and I must say: I am disappointed. When is Hijikata coming back.

The song for the ED is nothing special, but full marks for the art style. It’s really cool. That alone makes this the best ED in a long time. Possibly since Mr Raindrop, but that was a long time ago so maybe not.

Next episode, the Shogun does some negotiation with one of the Amanto or something. Till next time.
