#workinprogress What is your ideal coffee cup size? Espresso 2 oz, 4 oz, 12 oz, 14 oz, 16 oz? #throwbackthursday I am making more of these sake / espresso cups this week because they allow me to experiment without regrets. For me, glaze testing goes like this: 1. Scrap of clay bent into an L. If some little part catches my eye, then it moves on to part 2. 2. Burnished formal test tile with copious notes. Always tested by virtual brushing 2 coats, 3 coats, 4 coats on one side, and horizontal brushing on the other side. (Yes, the direction makes a huge difference.) 3. Small cups with lots of form variations then show how the glaze moves and pools. They test my ability to get the glaze to stop above the texture, and allow me to create interesting variations around the cup as well as the inside/outside options. Again, very detailed notes. . Next to my tea bowls, these little gems are my most expressive pieces because anything goes. A matte glaze with the look and feel of stone really excites me. (My Etsy shop is named “Lithology” for a reason.) Even when I use glossy bright colors, I often microcrystallize the gloss into a “cotton candy” look using crystalline firing schedules. That is how Unicorn Sparkle was born. One of my favs. I’m realizing that bright, high gloss color is an eye catcher on social media, so I have an undercurrent constantly pulling me in that direction. Its completely subconscious, but relentless. I love color, but I want to be sure I choose a surface for the piece, not the photo of the piece. When I do that successfully, the work is better, and so is the social media post. I know it isn’t blue, but this is one of my favorite glaze combos. It really shows off how the glaze flows sideways along the edge of the carving, and just look at the interaction inside. 😍 .
