It was a shitshow of a day. The pricks had ganged up on him, thought it was funny trying to shove NiCola down his throat, when he spat it back at them they just went ahead and poured the sticky blue drink over his head after getting a few cheap hits in.
Wasn’t really a fight when your pals had to hold the opponent still.
Felt like all eyes were on him when he took the train home. He pretended not to care. It only soured his mood more, made him into the pouting teenager his Ma found melted into the couch.
He blinked slowly. Looked at his Ma when she made him turn his head, though he didn’t look moved by her encouragement. If anything it looked like he had somehow managed to roll his eyes without ever moving them.
Then his eyebrow started to twitch.
The way she pinched his lips to make his expression more pronounced — part of him wanted to throw his head back with a scream, another part almost wanted to crack a smile.
But then she said the best thing yet. Something that lit up David’s face.
One moment he was laid out on the couch, the next he was curling his legs up, winding himself like a spring, and then he leapt up shoes and all running along the couch with the soda-towel flying behind him. His shoes squeaked along the tiled floor to the shower with a shouted “WHOA-HA-HOH NOVA!”
He approved.
And just like that he was upbeat again.
David toweled himself off with the same NiCola towel as if that was at all hygienic or made sense, ever a young boy. Said towel was wrapped around him as he waltzed on out grinning wide. “Hey Ma, you gettin’ an undercut too right?” It was a tease, but even so, it was a style that many were digging.
He ripped through the clean laundry. Changed into some fresh boxers. A black tee that was probably his. Coulda left the apartment just like that, though his favourite pants were retrieved from the floor where he’d last kicked them.
"Over here! Hey! Help!" Vale was normally never the type to chase after Trauma Team, never the person to want to get even close to paramedics and the doctors they worked with. Their hands would shake and their throat felt like it would close up every second they spent near someone who wasn't a Ripperdoc they trusted. If their name wasn't Vik, Vale wasn't getting anywhere near them. But...you can't pick up a whole group of people and chuck them into a Ripper's office and expect anything good to come from that or for people to get saved.
"Th-There was a standoff, Sixth Street and some Valentinos, tore through the street!" Vale rushed to the wearer of the bright yellow coat, knowing that someone with medical experience had to be wearing it. They stammered, the twenty-one year old could barely knock back a shot, let alone ask a paramedic for help.
"Cars got fuckin' bugged and exploded, people got shot, I-I dunno if they're payin' for Trauma Team, but please, y'gotta help! I dunno what else to do!"

he's had almonds before. his mouth itched a little, but he thought nothing of it. he gets rocky road ice cream and doesn't even get to finish it
at first he brushes off the mouth itchiness. but then he breaks out in hives, and his lips start getting puffy. by the time his throat starts to tighten, gloria's already calling 911
it's his first time ever being hospitalized. he doesn't register EMTs giving him an epipen. doesn't notice the IV get put in his hand. he's only been human for six months, and he's panicking that he's going to die before getting to do anything

barbie's still shaken up and she may or may not cry a little after ken jokes, "welp, guess that means no more almonds for me!"
if he doesn't joke about it, he might freak out, and he doesn't want that
Cyberpunk Edgerunners: David Martinez: Shadow of the Special
So if you havent watched Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Go watch it)
This here is our Main Protagonist. David Martinez.
Looks like your typical 17 year old punk prep wannabe.
But in truth there is much more than meets the eye.
Son of Gloria, an EMT and single mother that is busting her butt to send him to Arasaka academy so that way he could climb the corporate ladder and get out of the slums.
After a car accident thanks to some thugs, his mother ended up dying and with only a piece of tech that he found in his apartment, had to find a way to make a living. He ends up getting recruited by Maine's crew and becoming an edgerunner.
What occurs is a turbulent year in which David finds love, gets upgraded with enough tech to make him closer to an android than a cyborg, and caught in a tech war between Arasaka and Militech.
But thats just some background. Now I discuss what makes David a Shadow of the special.
(Spoilers below
What do I mean by Shadow?
I think one way of describing it is more or less letting oneself copy another's mannerisms, goals, motivations, and/or philosophy. Whether the individual is equal, better or worse at it doesnt matter. What matter's is that they acclimate it to themselves.
Now I know the argument that is going to be "But David has his own personality dreams and mindset and..." Now I am going to stop you right there. David does have a personality, but he doesnt have his own dreams. Which you will see soon enough.
Shadow of his Mother
David spent his life raised by his mother and before the events of the show, was a Straight A student that was brilliant but had a pension for some shady tech.
He had no interest in being a "Corpo" basically a corporate employee and was only attending the school because his mother dream was for him to succeed. Or specifically "Make it to the top of Arasaka tower"
Now kids are often shaped by their environment and their parents. Now despite the hardships, David was doing great in school in terms of grades. Though faulty tech and him trying to steer clear of spending money (Which was to help not burden his mother). Caused him to get into trouble.
Now David almost gets expelled over glitching the classroom environment and his mother reinforces her dream for him. His one time saying he would drop out of school to get a job was swept away immediately. His idea or goal was dismissed. Unfortunately thats the last thing he hears from his mother because she gets mortally wounded from an accident. Despite surgery, she didn't have the coverage that probably would have saved her life. (Trauma team could have saved her but due to not being a 'Policy holder') she and David were basically left to die.
After his mother passed, David was left with all her bills and debts. He dawns her EMT jacket and wears it for most of the series.
This was when David had to try and find a means of providing for himself. Thus becoming a shadow of his mother.
Shadow of Katsuo
So during this rather painful time, a piece of garbage and son of an exec Katsuo Tanaka bullied David. Katsuo had beaten his ass with his tech upgrades that gave him fast martial art moves. After which he mocked his upbringing and called his mom a whore for money.
And one would think that this brat would ease up after hearing David's mother passed. Nope, dude calls him up to mock the way his mother died. This is what pushed David too far.
David took the Sandevistan as an "Upgrade" taking advice from his bully. Which then resulted in David assaulting him during class, now that David was on the front foot. David had Left the shadow of his mother and decided that he would get payback. Using his power to take whats his.
As much as people and he himself would argue want to disagree, this is the case. But thankfully this is very brief.
Shadow of Lucy
So this one is less of him emulating Lucy and more pursuing her. Meeting her when she was on the train pickpocketing (cyberpunk style) anyone affiliated with Arasaka.
She quickly takes him in with a 70/30 split. Basically her 'Training him'. He starts following her lead and when she pulls him from the scalper he starts falling in love with her.
Lucy then tells him about her dream of going to the moon, something he originally saw as dumb until she shared the VR experience which made him enjoy the trip.
Of course this part does lead into where Derek starts to truly become a shadow of someone and thats...
Shadow of Maine
This is the leader of the group of Edgerunners, and as soon as he is introduced his impact on David is clear.
Maine was suppose to be the one to get the Sandevistan that David had equipped to himself. Now David finds out that his mom was helping these guys out by smuggling tech, which was how she got the funds for things outside of her EMT job.
Maine decides to give David a chance to prove himself and sure enough, has him join the crew.
We see David view Maine as a father figure, asking for jobs, guidance, even talking with him for advice.
Maine became his new guide in this new life. David even said he wanted tech similar to Maine's. Which Maine agreed he could have if he croaked.
After Maine's death, David ends up taking charge for the year and he is compared to Maine. Even getting very similar cybernetics (and having the same reaction when they were spiraling with Cyberpsychosis)
David even lead the group like Maine would, and even tried to mentor a newbie, like Maine did for him. Giving the kid a "Fair shake".
Though unlike Maine, he wasnt as good at keeping new recruits alive.
Lucy points out that David is still not living his own life, living with expectations and goals others had for him.
But David does outgrow Maine and becomes the shadow of someone else.
Shadow of Adam Smasher
David's affinity for cyber implants was considered amazing, which was why he was able to actually able to use the Sandevistan. And after being an Edgerunner for a year, with his amount of chrom, The doc even called him "Adam Smasher 2.0"
A statement of how "Special" David was. And when he got that new exoskeleton (a set up by Militech) in order to test out his cyber affinity. Arasaka sent Adam Smasher to deal with him when he was heading towards them.
Adam and David clashed, Adam thinking David was a punk way over his head that thought he was special. While David said he was and their fight was... pretty one sided.
Adam basically ripped through David like butter.
David realized that he wasnt going to be able to beat him, and decided to buy time so the remainder of his team could actually escape.
It was in this moment David stepped out of the shadow of Adam. Now not just trying to achieve the goals of others, or even a selfish desire to get stronger, but to protect Lucy. The one he loved. Getting her the money to take her to the moon, though he wouldnt be able to join her.
Adam beat him down and David was left ripped up. Though Adam actually showed respect and said he would make a good construct. (Basically another like him).
But instead of accepting it, David said "Get f***ed Choom"
Which Adam then ended his life.
For most of the series, David was always a shadow of what someone expected him to be or the shadow of someone he admired. And he was a talented young man, someone you could say had a special talent. But he didnt have his own personal dreams or goals and ended up copying those around him.
But only in his final moments, when he took his life in his own hands and did things his way did he finally become true to who he is.
He was a shadow of the special, not special in his own right. but thats what makes him so fascinating and tragic

It never fails that no matter what muse I play, I’m always coming up with a Pokemon team for them. For David so far I have:
Fuecoco (That later evolves into a Skeledirge.)
Grafaiai (Perfect Pokemon for a rebelious punk and a reference to when he spray painted the Edgerunners symbol on his mom’s jacket.)
Miraidon (Of course “build different” special boy would be the one with a legendary on his team.)
Audino (Not a main staple of his team, but it was his mother’s Pokémon and the perfect companion for any EMT. Fell into a deep depression when Gloria passed away.)
Would love some suggestions for some other Pokemon for David.
Are you a fan of Cyberpunk? Or maybe a fan of sci-fi-fantasy action anime? Or all of the above? Well, here’s the perfect netflix anime series for you, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Before we proceed, we would like to give you a huge disclaimer and warning that this review will have lots of spoilers so if you’re planning to watch the series and you don’t want to know any spoilers, then I suggest you stop reading right now.
Anyway, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an anime series based on the video game Cyberpunk 2077. It takes place in a Night City overrun by corruption, crime, and cybernetic implants. There you’ll meet David Martinez, the protagonist, who is a rebellious, impulsive yet smart street kid. He lives with his mother in the slums of the city. His mother, Gloria, worked as an emergency medical technician (EMT) and sells high-priced and rare Cyberware she took from the corpses to edgerunners. An unfortunate car accident happened to David and his mother which took her life away. From then on, David changed and decided to be an edgerunner.
The emotional trauma David experienced led him to a drastic physical change in his body. This is also because he’s an edgerunner. Per episode, you can see that David upgrades his Cyberware until the very end. The more he upgrades, the more he makes use of Cyberware that is too much for his body. However, this doesn’t mean that he’s a different person. Let’s relate it to the concept of change. Change is constant. In the last episode, you can see that David’s cyberware body was enhanced, enlarged, and had a lot of implants similar to Maine’s in order to defeat Adam Smasher. He also used an experimental exoskeleton which couldn’t be reversed once implanted. David didn’t care whether or not his body gave up on him. It was mind over matter. All he had in mind is to protect his loved ones (edgerunners team) and avenge those who he had lost on the way (his mother, Dorio, Maine, Rebecca) and that was enough for him to try to survive. He is willing to risk it all like sacrifice his body (matter) just to make sure that he will be able to avenge the loss of his mother and protect his remaining loved ones and friends that he considers as his family. It was also shown in previous episodes that David was more of a mind over matter person since he was impulsive and did things to get his way, no matter how much damage it can cause to him, Because for David, he believed that he was going to die soon. He already accepted that, that is his fate. David died with honor and in his moments of death, Lucy was the only person he had in his mind.
In connection with this, David Martinez is mostly related to the theory of self as body, self as consciousness since as mentioned earlier, he’s a mind over matter person. Even though the theory states that there is a linkage between the body and mind, the latter has more control over the body. Just like David, he follows his mind more than his body. He doesn’t have much care for his body which explains his impulsivity in upgrading his Cyberware. Thus, leading him to his demise.
If we were asked what theories of the self a Filipino resembles, we’d say the theory of self as passion and desire. At a young age, most Filipinos already have a vision of who they want to be in the future. Some already picture themselves as athletes such as future professional basketball players or boxers while others view themselves as professional singers or dancers wherein they are more than willing to give their best to achieve their dreams or to become what they want themselves to be in the future because it is their passion, it is what makes them happy, and their talents are their weapons to get out of poverty. Just like in the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, wherein the majority of the people wants to become edgerunners since they live in a city wherein the people are obsessed with technology and body-modification and those who have money are the only ones who have the right to put food on their table, to enjoy healthcare, and experience fair law.

Movie Reviews:
of course, she had no honour. that was evident to him, after she had taken the bite & agreed to cover for them. her response was everything he had come to expect from someone like her. what he didn't expect, though, was the mention of family, which had him eyeing him in a way that showed some mild interest—that despite her offence, he was still willing to listen to her, & find out the reason for such a request. the revelation didn't cause any visible surprise upon him, but it piqued something in him that made him wonder about her phrasing. kind of? he'd ask, but the mention of one of his brothers had him pondering on whom the mother was, & the circumstances of the case. ryo appeared thoughtful at that, staring upwards. "does that mean you're willing to take onto the debt?" he concluded, glancing down at her. however, he suspected that wasn't what she had in mind. otherwise, it would be her the one making that offer, rather than ask for it to be forgotten. & she still had the nerve to take some hush money... what a family, she was.
"i'm sure sugawara had his motive." the man added, while trying to make memory of this guy & his mother... the name martinez kept looping in his head. "maybe all of this could've been avoided if you had been there for the mother, before she came to us." which made the situation all the more bizarre to him, if this woman felt comfortable enough to call herself that kid's aunt. he cracked his neck & let a low hum. "we visit plenty of people, so... if you could refresh my mind on her, i could maybe consider it."
Ideally not, she thought and really hoped, it could be solved more easily but then again, she had no idea how Gloria's relationship had been with the Fukuhara Clan. David had to pay back an amount, with which he could finance an entire new house but instead, it would only go to them. It would not really matter to her, but David was basically family for her, so she felt responsible. "Is it really a debt, or not just some fees that are left?" All the hassle, just so David could enter an elite school, one he did not even bother to visit at this point or was kicked out, she did not know, but Gloria's sacrifice had been for nothing and only caused more trouble for her son. If he had at least tried to stay at that school, that thought alone made her grit her teeth.
"Oh, I am sure..." Sadism, nothing else, considering David was trying to pay back instead of fleeing or the like. He even took a job, no one at his age should even do (ideally). "Huh?! I was her friend, not her mother now," Futaba huffed and wanted to slap him for his stupid reasoning. "Ever heard of pride? It's not easy to ask for money." Especially for a case, where a cheaper option existed but she really had wished a good start for her son. "I did not even know..." And she glared at him, a silent warning that he better not try to lecture her further in this matter, where he lacked far too many details.
"But surely not many with the name Martinez?" And even a woman, as men were more guilty to ask for help by the Yakuza. Omori sure was testing her patience too today. But if he had not dealt with her, and it really had been more Sugawara, ... well, maybe she could not blame him so much after all. Nevertheless it annoyed her. "Gloria Martinez, middle-aged woman with red hair, who worked as EMT, y'know in the ambulance." In case he failed to associate the term to anything.
(( naomi scott, cis woman, she/her )) when the evening snow falls, you won't find mina choksi outside. the twenty-nine year emt has lived in frigid for six months and most know her to be earnest and skeptical. ( peyton, 24, they/them, est )

about.
gloria (née powell) and sanam choksi had a complicated relationship to say the least. they married young, had their first child, and separated before mina was even born. sanam had even left briefly when she was a few months old, reappearing nearly a year later. gloria never fully forgave him for doing so but mina and her older brother theodore (affectionately called teddy by the family) had nothing but unconditional love for their father. as much as gloria resented sanam, she would do anything to ensure her children’s happiness even if they couldn’t see him for what he was.
sanam is in and out for a majority of mina’s youth, but the rose colored glasses never get taken off as she continues to idolize him. he would come home with presents and treats that gloria wouldn’t let them normally eat. he would have exciting stories about his travels that mina so desperately wished she could join him on. this continued on until mina turned twelve. it was never explained why, the child assuming that her parents were together and in love again, but now she understands.
mina knew that gloria wasn’t like other mothers. she stayed home while sanam would show up to her soccer games or take her and teddy out to their favorite ice cream shop. gloria spent most of her time at home and would tell her children not to worry. if she stayed home it meant that there was more of her for the two of them. she was too young to understand just what was going on with her mother. she knew gloria needed help though.
she was fourteen when her mother had her psychotic break. sanam ordered teddy to take his sister to his room and to lock the door and to simply wait. mina isn’t sure how much time had passed as she was more focused on attempted to drown out her parent’s screams. she does however remember the flashing lights, peering out the window, and watching gloria get taken away by two men in white uniforms.
it’s a difficult adjustment and no amount of therapy sanam made mina and teddy go to could ever truly fix the reality of their situation. gloria hadn’t been doing well and sanam came back full time to take care of her but even he knew there was only so much he could do. she was a ticking time bomb, apparently, not that teddy or mina were made aware. that only seemed to bother mina though. it took her a full month to feel ready to see gloria again in the hospital that she had to live at full time. she explains to the girl that she wasn’t being herself but mina needed more and she knew she wasn’t going to get it.
as teddy moved across the country to attend law school, mina trained as an emt in her hometown. sanam pushed the girl to go to college, telling her she was wasting her potential by staying put. it got easier to drown out as the years went by. she visited gloria when she could, but with each passing day the woman became a shell of her old self. gloria passed away a week after mina's twenty fifth birthday but to mina her mother had died a long time ago. it was a different kind of grief. sanam is quick to move on and mina still heard no word from her brother. she was alone with the house and the memories.
life goes on until mina gets a call from an unknown number and something told her to pick up. it was from a hospital a state away. she assumed it was simply a mistake until the woman on the phone mentions her brother. all she understood was that theodore choksi had overdosed and that she was his emergency contact and he had to be picked up as soon as possible. teddy and mina’s relationship wasn’t as close as it used to be, not since gloria had been institutionalized really. teddy was always the more mature one which made mina feel isolated in her hurt and confusion.
it doesn’t take long for her to get to the hospital and even less time to yell at her older brother for nearly leaving her alone to deal with their parents. he was the only other person who was fucked up the same way she was and if he left she’d never forgive him. mina gets a motel for the two of them to spend the night and teddy comes clean about dropping out of law school his first year in, explaining all the choices he made to lead him overdosing in a stranger’s apartment. he’s clearly ashamed and mina is forced to push her anger aside, genuinely meaning it when she says she’s glad he’s okay.
much to mina’s frustration teddy vehemently opposes going back home but like hell was she going to leave him to his own devices. but maybe a fresh start was what the two of them needed. also truth be told she never liked living alone. she finds a job opening in the small town of frigid and heard back sooner than expected. mina chalked up to the endless amount of ski accidents she was sure happened all the time.
the choksi siblings never appeared to catch a break. the first two months are rough as teddy and mina readjust to living together after so many years. they were both so different now. she was going to take care of him now and he hated having no choice but to be looked after by his baby sister. from every trip to narcotic's anonymous to every push to help him land a job, the two would end up fighting. teddy wanted to leave, told mina something was off about the town, to which mina replied she can’t keep uprooting her life for him. they’re staying.
then nathaniel burns was found chopped up in the woods with no evidence leading to who could do such a thing. so much for a fresh start.
wanted connections.
i prefer chemistry over anything else so these are more just ideas to get the ball rolling!
roommates. i was thinking one or two for an easy connection haha. mina’s a good roommate though and will do her part when it comes to cleaning.....most of the time. she's social enough for her and teddy who i imagine mostly keeps to himself.
friends. which sounds so incredibly basic but she needs a social life outside of her family for once. she hasn’t been in frigid for that long but she would be quick to make some connections in a new town.
someone to talk shit with. i know this sounds like a friend but this idea is specifically someone she can be kind of a dick with. she’s just really blunt so she needs the catharsis <3.
drinking buddies. because hanging with people sober is lame /j
a confidant. because therapy isn’t an option i guess.
positive/negative influence.
terrible first date. either they kept in contact and stayed friends or things are awkward now.
one night stands.
exes.
unrequited crush. either way!
honestly anything you can think of!!!

“I wasn’t paying attention! I didn’t realize it turned red!”
Pain. That’s all you felt. Searing, agonizing pain that ripped through your whole body and you couldn’t even scream. You couldn’t move at all actually. You just wanted to open your eyes, but you can’t. Were you still upside down in the car? You felt your body lifted onto a stretcher. That answered your question. All of a sudden darkness. You must’ve passed out. You come to again and hear voices all around you. The ambulance siren was blaring as you fluttered your eyes.
“NKDA.” someone yells out.
“I need O2!”
“On it!”
You suddenly feel like you can’t catch your breath. Your chest aches and you feel your body start to spazz. You gasp for air and suddenly, darkness.
“Code 99!” someone screams.
“Alright, I need the defib, stat!”
You’re not sure how long you were out for. It felt like years. But you knew you were dying.
“Was it a DUI?” someone yells out.
“No! Just an idiot!”
“Defib is on! 200 volts! Alright, clear!”
They shock your heart and your body jerks up. The EMT’s look at your heart monitor and the once persistent waves were now falling into a straight line. The man looks down at you and frowns before holding the devices back in his hands.
“Again! 300 volts, clear!”
You jerk up once more and they wait to see if there’s any change to the heart monitor. Nothing. You were flat lining. The man lets out a loud frustrated yell and once again looks to you.
“Once more! 500 volts, clear!”
You jerk up more and a sudden spike in the heart monitor makes them all release a breath they were holding. Your heart is beating again. The man looks to you and smiles, watching as your chest begins to rise up and down slowly. You’re breathing. He squats down next to you and whispers in your ear.
“Don’t you die on me.”

BEEP BEEP BEEP
You take in a deep breath and wince in pain. Every inch if your body hurts. You felt like you had been hit by a… Oh. You had been. You attempt to open your eyes, but they fall close again. They were heavy and tired. You slightly move your arm and stop. You open your eyes once more and are able to look in front of you for a split second. You know you’re at the hospital. An oxygen mask is slipped over your face and you can feel your chest and body covered with wires and bandages. Everything that had happened came flooding back to you. The cafe, the phone call and the truck that slammed into you. A wave of nausea hits you at that memory. All you could think of was how terrified you were. How badly you wanted to scream out for someone to help you, but you couldn’t.
The annoying beep of machines surrounding you was like a screech in your ear. It made this migraine you have a million times worse. You let out a slight groan and open your eyes once more. Something beside you stirred as you close your eyes again.
“Y/n?” asks a worried voice. A worried voice that you know.
You attempt to open your eyes and turn your head, only to hiss at the pain.
“No, no, no. Stay still. Don’t move.”
You open your eyes again and a person is sitting on the side of your bed, looking at you. They’re half smiling and their eyes are swollen and red from crying. You blink a few times, trying to make the blurriness go away. It disappears for a short second as you focus on the face in front of you. A man with blonde hair and piercing blue eyes is staring at you. You look at their face and try to figure out how you know them, he looks so familiar yet not. The man tries to speak to you again, but your eyes flutter close and you’re asleep.
____________________________________
The sound of voices made your eyes partly open. This time it was much easier to hold them open. You blink a few times adjusting them to the bright light over you. You slowly turn your head and watch as a group of people stand in the left corner of your room. You go to speak, but end up coughing, Your throat is so dry. Everyone turns their head and look over to you. A doctor and three nurses rush to you. The doctor looks at you as the nurses check your vitals and machines.
“Y/n?” asks the doctor in a calm voice. “My name is Doctor Timothy. You’re at St. Gloria’s hospital right now. You were in a bad accident yesterday, okay?”
He speaks slow and you mentally thank him for that, seeing as you were hardly able to understand him then anyways. You slowly nod your head. He smiles and scoots even closer.
“Do you know what happened to you?” he asks. You think for a moment before nodding once more.
“She’s stable.” says a nurse. You attempt to look over at her and she sweetly smiles at you. “You are lucky, miss y/l/n. You had some kind of angel watching over you.”
You just stare at her as the other nurse brings in a styrofoam cup with a long straw. She walks over to you and smiles.
“I’m going to take your oxygen mask off, okay sweetie? I have some water for you to drink.”
You watch as the mask is lifted off and she brings the straw to your dry lips. You slowly open your mouth and begin sipping on it.
“Not too fast, honey. Slow sips.”
You finish the drink and sigh in relief. Your mouth had felt like a desert. You relax into the bed and watch as the doctor and nurses all talk among each other. The doctor walks back to you and pulls up a chair.
“Y/n, you’ve fractured three of your ribs, your collar bone and your left arm. You also had ruptured your spleen, so we had to do an emergency surgery on you, but it was textbook perfect. You’re going to have a lot of bruises and swelling, but you’ll be okay. Can you tell me what year it is?” he asks, pulling out a little flashlight from his pocket.
You think hard and feel absolutely foolish not remembering what year it is. You squint your eyes and look back at him, slowly shaking your head. He smiles and nods.
“Now that’s okay. We’ll come back to that one. Can you tell me your birthday?”
You think for another moment and squeeze your eyes close as tears pour down your face. You can’t even remember your own birthday. You were scared by this. How could you not know your birthday? Your heart rate monitor starts making loud beeping noises as a nurse rushes up to you.
“Hey, hey. It’s okay,” she says calmly. “It’s just a mild concussion. It’ll go away soon, okay?” she says.
You open your eyes and nod. A concussion. Hopefully you’ll be back to yourself in no time. You’re frustrated that you can’t find your voice. You open your mouth to speak, but when you try to, your chest aches. You let out a loud cough and wince in pain.
“Up the morphine for her.” says the doctor, low. “We’re gonna help you get some sleep, okay? That’ll help your body heal itself and it’ll help with the pain.”
You nod and close your eyes as the nurse injects your IV with a clear substance. A slight burning feeling rushes to your head and within a second, you feel like you’re floating. You quickly fall into a deep sleep.

“She has a concussion,”
You stir yourself awake and yawn. You open your eyes and blink several times as you look around. You turn your head to watch as your doctor talks to someone outside your door.
“Doctor?” you call out. You pause in shock by your sudden voice. You could finally speak! Well, it was a pitiful voice. More like a harsh whisper. The doctor turns around quickly and smiles. He quickly walks to you and pulls out your chart.
“You found your voice!” he says happy. You smile up to him. “That’s a very good sign. Sleeping all day yesterday must’ve really helped.”
You slept all day!? Your eyes open wide at that thought.
“Do you think you can tell me what year it is again?” he asks. You think again and once more, nothing.
“That’s okay. We’ll keep trying. I’m gonna send in a nurse to give you a bit more pain medicine. Your heart rate is rising just a bit. I’ll be back to check on you within the hour.”
You let out a weak thank you as he walks out of the room. You lean your head back and exhale as you close your eyes. You didn’t realize you could be this tired. You’re lost in your train of thought when suddenly there’s a slight knock at your door. You open your eyes and look over. The same man you saw next to your bed the day you got in here, was standing by your door smiling. You return a smile as he slowly walks in.
“Hi,” he says.
“Hi. Do you think you could tell them I don’t want as much this time?” you ask as you clear your throat.
The man pauses and looks confused. He looks to the door then back to you.
“Don’t want as much?” he asks.
“Yeah, not as much pain medicine this time, please. I feel like a zombie.”
He squints his eyes and nods.
“Oh, okay. I can tell your nurse…” he says.
“Oh, aren’t you my nurse?” you ask, confused.
The man half laughs and then gets a serious look on his face. He blinks a few times and takes a step forward.
“Y/n,” he says, worried. “It’s me,
Roger.”
