What do you think Valentine would have thought about Jonathan and the Seelie Queen’s relationship ? How do you think he would have reacted to Ash ?

It's a difficult question.

I don't remember if the books said what Valentine thought of hybrid shadowhunters. Clary assumed that he would destroy them…. but this man was pouring demon blood into himself and his own son. There is an opinion that in fact, he does not care much about the purity of blood, as one might initially think. He's for experimentation. Behind all the hatred of the lower world lies envy of the power they possess and fear. I think he wouldn't reject or despise him just because Ash belongs to the underworld. But he wouldn't be burning with love either, just because he's a Morgenstern. Valentine's attitude towards Ash would depend on how Ash reacted to him, would become a threat to him (like Clary is his own daughter, a girl who has so much of an angel in her, but Valentine did not love her), or was on his side (which is unlikely).

And what about the daughter-in-law. Valentin would have thought that his son knows how to choose women and how to conduct political relations. (by the way, as far as I remember, there was a moment in the book where Clary accused the queen of the seelie that she knew the whole truth about Valentine's children, but did not say anything. At the very least, Valentine should be grateful to her for keeping his little secret).

Clary Fairchild and Sebastian Morgenstern

Children of divorce (except technically their parents never legally divorced dad faked his death and raised Sebastian while mom ran away while she was pregnant with Clary). Sebastian was fed demon blood in the womb and that plus his dad’s A+ parenting plus his mom wishing she’d killed him as a baby gave him a twisted perception of love. Clary on the other hand received angel blood and was raised without knowledge of her brother or any magic stuff. Sebastian has an unhealthy view of Clary where he sees her as someone who is supposed to love him, and not just as a sister. His plan to raise a demon army and rule the world also involved her ruling alongside him despite her absolutely not wanting that. Clary in the end kills Sebastian with a magic sword that burns away all the evil in him, leaving behind not enough ‘good’ to survive any longer than is necessary for some last words that fuck Clary and their mom up by showing an alternate version of him that isn’t an evil demon prince.

When Sebastian/Jonathan first found out about Clary he hoped she would be like him & was disappointed she wasn't. He changed his mind when she killed their father & didn't lose a wink of sleep over it. They're on opposite side of a war that they basically inherited from their father. Who btw experimented on them in the womb by giving Jonathan demon blood & Clary angel blood (accidentally). Clary is the only person Jonathan cares about & when he was at the height of his power he wanted her to his queen (yes in a weird way) & she pretended to join him. Instead she betrayed him & killed him, and she quoted Judas betraying Jesus when she did.

It's been a while but from what I remember: Sebastian first introduces himself under another identity posing as a good guy and seduces Clary (yes, his sister) only to betray them all when he reveals who he is. When he returns two books later, he has kidnapped Clary's boyfriend, forcing him to carry out his evil plans, He threatens the lives of people Clary cares about several times, makes continuous attempts to seduce her (I'm pretty sure he tries to rape her at one point) , and in the last book he kidnaps Clary's stepfather. You know, the basic things you'd expect from an evil older brother that you didn't know you had 🤷🏻

I cant believe im admitting this in the year 2024 but I was always a luke apologist*

*not for the murder and abuse and shit but like, the fact that was he really a bad guy in the end? Or was he just a traumatized kid who watched his mom go insane, lost the girl her loved because of who her dad was, was ignored by his father even after his quest, then had those things used against him and was manipulated for god knows how long, and by the time he realized just how bad the consequences of his actions were, it was too late because kronos was possessing his body and making him do even more fucked up shit

I have always loved complex characters like luke, anakin skywalker, and jonathan morgenstern

I have always been intrigued by his character. I admit I have not reread the books in quite a long time, and I think if I reread them now as an older person I would find him a more sympathetic character, since the world is a lot less black and white for me now.

I am always the number one supporter of a morally complex character, and Luke happens to be my favourite flavour of those, a character doing bad things for a good cause. He's experienced so much trauma and manipulation and I would love to see this more explored in the show (it already has been a bit in episode six, which really excites me!)

I'll most certainly be rereading the books soon hopefully. I am at my core a Luke Castellan apologist and would love to read the books again with a more sympathetic lens towards him, knowing his background and where his story goes and then examining his actions.

So yeah for the Morgenstern essay I still haven't typed it out ...but it's basically like Clary (protagonist) and Sebastian (antagonist) both were Morgensterns. It's a tainted name in the shadowhunters community right? So my point is something isn't always inherently bad ...it's the circumstances or the fate (or the plot 😗) which makes them bad. Now for Jonathan/ Sebastian bro had been going through torture for all his life as the demon blood burns shadowhunters. He was Raised to be a weapon unlike Jace who was atleast taught other stuff. Upbringing matters a lot in shaping those characters, shaping their powers. Like for comparison if you look at Jace when he was a Wayland...when he was a Morgenstern....when he is a herondale... there's a slight difference in the way he's written or the way he fights ... he's still the same Jace but there's this minute difference you'd notice. So basically the background you're Given also matters a lot ...which happened with Sebastian. If he was given a non-Valentine life/ background....if his blood wasn't infused...if he was brought up in a normal way he'd have definitely led a better life As a Morgenstern and wouldn't have been the one manipulated into being the villian .... maybe he'd have still turned out to be a antagonist who knows. But atleast throughout his life he'd have felt light the way he felt while dying. Maybe clary's fate would've changed if they grew up as siblings who knows. The Morgensterns we've seen till now are all fucked in the head fr. Like even Clary could've gotten her villian arc easily...the clave anyways did not trust her as she was a Morgenstern.

To sum it up ....I feel Morgensterns have a dominant dark side n would be the bad guy ...but you always get a choice to choose your path even if you're blinded by the fate

The nature of last names in the shadowhunters world is such a compelling one, and you're right, it's absolutely something of a metaphor for choosing who you become, who you are. Even during ascension, there's a certain amount of this. You pick a name that you want to be like. You don't pick a name like Morgenstern.

Except... There's also an amount of reclamation when it comes to last names. Gabriel and Gideon worked hard to make the Lightwood name mean something good again after their father tainted it, and I think a large part of their ability to do that comes from Tatiana denouncing the Lightwood name at the same time.

A name doesn't dictate personality, of course, but it does have a certain sway in how you are treated by other shadowhunters, which of course, informs the way you act. It's a whole thing in developmental psychology; natural/genetic temperaments garner certain reactions, which then controls how a child is parented etc., which then has a hand in which other personality traits etc. come to the surface. I think this is very similar to how shadowhunters are raised according to their last name, and how, so often we see a change of name being an indicator of a change of self--because it can be difficult to change when you are still being perceived a certain way.

As for where this leaves us with the Morgensterns... Green-eyed Jonathan is often associated with the last name Fairchild, and I think the reason why is clear. There's an amount of hope there, for a person who never got to be a person--that he would turn out to be better than the man who raised him. And if he had been raised a Morgenstern, even without the demon blood, I do think it would have been more likely for him to become an antagonist, than if he had been raised a Fairchild, simply because one name has a much more negative connotation than the other--especially in the time that Jonathan was being raised. People would have treated him differently as a Morgenstern than they would a Fairchild.

If we're following the logic that somehow Valentine was not a presence in his childhood, this would all have to circle back to Jocelyn, and her decision whether to keep her husband's name or not. I do think there could be scenarios where she did, but I would be more inclined to believe that she would at the very least return to being Jocelyn Fairchild and raise her son with the same name. No, this wouldn't make him immune to the reactions of other shadowhunters, but I do think the choice to step away from the tainted name would be recognized and acknowledged in a positive way. We see a little bit of the opposite happen with Clary, iirc, when she takes up Heosphoros, but she was already at a point, then, when she was ready to treat Morgenstern in a similar way to how Gideon and Gabriel would have treated Lightwood after the events of TID.

It would be so interesting to see how such reclamation would have played out if Clary and Jonathan had been raised as siblings. Would Clary see the way her brother was treated for a name he didn't even use and get angry for him? Would Jonathan work hard to be a good example for his sister, a good steward of the family he was born into? Or would it be something of the opposite? Or would they ever even try to reclaim that name? No Valentine means no "Sebastian" means no continued conversation surrounding the name Morgenstern...

I guess what I'm saying is that maybe there is an inheritable darkness in the Morgensterns, but I think it's possible that the name does as much, if not more, than the genes themselves. Morgensterns have been the bad guys, so they will be painted as such, and future Morgensterns will then have an inclination to fill the shoes and be the bad guys.

Valentin and his son

I know that many people think Valentine is a terrible father. maybe it is. after all, he himself said that he didn't need a son, he needed a warrior. Again, I think he fulfilled his parental role quite well, he taught his children everything he knew himself. many hate him for his cruel treatment - he brought up the boys the way he was brought up - pain makes you stronger, loss is more powerful - if you consider that this is a society of warriors, the world in which they are destined to live is far from beautiful - this teaching makes sense.

Who is the coolest shadowhunter? Jace. Hey, who brought him up, who gave him the basics? Valentine! Yes, yes, the same immoral type who bullied his children🤔. After all, if he was that awful, Jace wouldn't miss him, and it's unlikely Jonathan would be jealous. For example, Celine was abused by her parents and she ran away. Valentine himself left Jonathan alone for a while (ran away from him, haha). Rejoice to yourself, exhale, the monstrous father left, but Jonathan did not like it, he began to cheat, hide his father's stylus, make a mess on Valentine's desktop.

I've always been interested to find out what Jonathan's childhood was like, what he was like. How his demonic nature manifested itself. The author wrote that the inspiration was a book about children who kill; Cassandra Clare wrote that Jonathan is not a demon, he was just born with an emptiness in his soul, he has no sense of conscience, and he cannot understand what is good and what is bad. And it's not really about parenting, it's the result of an experiment. Jonathan wondered why Valentine loved Jace more (it's clear that he loved him for his humanity, and considered him his son, but he didn't need a son), he needed a warrior - he needed Jonathan. Jonathan considered himself the perfect son; he says the scars on his back are a reminder of the dangers of obedience. If he was so obedient, then why would Valentine say such a thing: " He was too savage, too sudden, not subtle enough. I feared even then, when he was barely out of infancy, that he would never have the patience or the compassion to follow me, to lead the Clave in my footsteps. So I tried again with you. And with you I had the opposite trouble". - city of glass.

Oh, yes, I want to see the treacherous little Jonathan. recently I watched the movie "the good son" of 1993, and I thought, maybe our Jonathan was like that?

There is so little of their relationship in the book. But judging by those dialogues in the city of glass, how Valentin says that war is not something to be happy about; that the murder of Hodge is not quite right; it is unlikely that he whispered 24/7 in Jonathan's ears that murder and chaos are cool.

it's clear that Morgenstern himself has problems with his head, the way he disgustingly shows love. This abnormality was also adopted by Jonathan. These eternal terrible biblical phrases that they didn't understand correctly. "I love you. you are my property. Blood to blood…" I would like to know more about Valentine's parents. Unlike Jonathan, he had a mother. A woman who died of grief because of her husband's death. If the story is true. It seems that she was a loving person. It's a pity didn't teach son adequate love.

Definitely, I would like more Valentine's moments with son…😏
