I started reading Death in Venice and its kinda embarrassing to admit but I'm having problems with the language; i feel like I have to read every sentence multiple times to get it. Do you maybe have any advice/ would you say one gets into it eventually? I'm reading it in German in case that makes a difference.

dont really rememember much of my first read-through (+ i read it in english the first time around) so i cant rlly say what i did/how i dealt w that specifically w death in venice. but my general advice for this is just powering through it - not in a read-every-sentence-thrice kind of way but in a moving-along sort of way. basically what i do after a certain point of having problems w understanding smthing is i'll just stop thinking too much about it and read on, most times theres some context clues in the next few sentences that clue you in, or sometimes you just need to move on without getting it. bc what u have to keep in mind is that this is only your first time reading it and in my experience it can go two ways: either you try rlly hard to understand everything, get frustrated and then just get tired of it and put the book away, or u just kinda go with the flow, have a nice reading experience and then u can always read specific bits later, who knows maybe u'll get them then. (but also yeah after a certain point you definitely get into it dont worry)

Hey there, Cielo! I’ve remembered an old but very vivid dream of mine about a ronin and an abducted daughter of a yokai. The two ofc will eventually fall in love and the ronin swears to rescue her, sacrificing all he had in the process.

I have no idea to keep this idea as on original story or convert into a fic. If it ends up as a fic, I’ll need some guidance that’s why I’m slipping into all my fave writers inboxes.

honestly tho! i think this could fit a ton of favs 😭 it just depends on who you want!! i think revenge is one of those things that can be given to many—maybe not your most golden hearted of heroes! but gosh even yuuji has some….vicious wolf of revenge in him.

(i’m thinking of that line he has to mahito after he kills junpei about…..the next words out of his mouth made everything else he’d ever said feel like a lie because it was filled with so much truth: “i will kill you”)

so sorry i’m not a ton of help but i do really think you could pick many characters and many favs! and there are quite a few that have a natural theme of vengeance in their own stories—they might be easier to apply it to!

i just think more ya and genre fiction in general should have the balls of mr stroud's bartimaeus trilogy. wrap up your series not just with your young mc dead as a doornail but he's also: unforgiven for his crimes as an agent of empire; his death saves lives but does not itself end any oppressive systems (spirit summoning OR the terrestrial british empire); and frankly there's very little indication that either of those systems will get any better post-canon whatsoever! the british proletariat has thrown off their chains, but it's not looking likely that they'll do the same for the colonies! kitty may try to proselytize about human-spirit relations, but she's one woman against the world! i just don't think her chances are great! nathaniel's death saved a lot of people who will never thank him for it and exactly two people who would (edit: BUT CAN'T! BECAUSE HE'S DEAD!). it improves nothing about the world, just gives it the slim chance, in other hands, of some unlikely day getting a smidgen better. his morals are so totally absent by mid-book 3 that the major emotional revelation he comes to, building up across three books, the climax of his personal arc, is "oh fuck other people are also people too." he was fully unaware of that one prior. great fucking series. cry every time
