Round 1.2
Tumblr media
Information about contestants below!
Horned gopher (Ceratogaulus sp.)
Horned gophers are extinct rodents that lived from the late Miocene to the early Pliocene epochs. They had two horns; these were large (in comparison to body size), paired, and originated from the nasal bones. Horned gophers are the smallest known horned mammals and the only known rodents ever to have had horns.
The role of the horns is subject to much speculation. Several functions have been hypothesized including digging, mating displays or combat, and defense from predators. The horns are not sexually dimorphic and multiple analyses support a role in defense.
In other respects, horned gophers most resembled modern marmots. They were approximately 30 cm long, and had paddle-like forepaws with powerful claws adapted for digging. They also had small eyes, and probably had poor eyesight, similar to that of a mole. These features, and morphology analyses suggest that they were likely burrowing animals.
Common degu (Octodon degus)
It has yellow-brown fur above and creamy-yellow below. The tail is long, thin, with a tufted, black tip. Its cheek teeth are shaped like figures-of-eight, hence the degu's genus name Octodon.
Degus are highly social. They live in burrows, and, by digging communally, they are able to construct larger and more elaborate burrows than they could on their own. Females living in the same group nest communally and nurse one another's young. Unlike most other rodents, male common degus also take part in protecting and raising their pups. They are strictly herbivorous.
Degus exhibit a wide array of communication techniques. They have an elaborate vocal repertoire comprising up to 15 different sounds. Degus are diurnal and have good vision, they are extremely intelligent and have a good ability to solve problems. After initial interest as research subjects, they have become popular as pets. The average lifespan in captivity is around 6-8 years.

Snake Swag Round 1A
Tumblr media
Say hello to two of North America's largest colubrids! The gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer) can be found from northern Mexico, to the central and western US, and up through southwestern Canada. They are known among snake lovers as very sassy snakes, and when they feel threatened (or grumpy!), gopher snakes may flatten their heads, make loud hissing noises, shake and buzz their tails, or even bluff strike ('strike' at a threat with their mouth closed). Eastern indigo snakes (Drymarchon couperi) are typically found in the southern US, in Florida and Georgia, however after intensive reintroduction efforts started after the Alabama population was completely eradicated, a wild eastern indigo was spotted in Alabama just last year! This marks the second time an eastern indigo was found in Alabama in 60 years, but because of their extremely shy, elusive nature, conservationists say that these two sightings mean there is a thriving population of eastern indigos that are simply keeping out of sight. Gopher snakes can grow up to 7 feet long, while a record eastern indigo was found at 8.5 feet!

It’s finally here! April 10th is the only day of the year completely dedicated to appreciating the superstars of southeastern scrub habitats- the gopher tortoises!
As I do every year, I will be using this day to share information, photos, and memes about our favorite charismatic tortoise species. Buckle up for a tortoise frenzy and please feel free to join me in celebrating with your own tortoise content!
Let’s get things started with a poll:

While I’m on the subject here’s some of the animals in my lil for funsies au
Ohio is a white tailed deer
California is a California ground squirrel cause he looks cute but he will fight you
I wanted Nevada to be a striped skunk but I made a poll a while back and the vote was for black tailed rabbit
Florida is a jaguar I’ve drawn him before
Georgia is a mink
I hadn’t had a animal for Maryland but in the process of making this I have decided he is an opossum
Texas is a longhorn bc I learned to draw them and I love them
Louisiana is a pelican. Relatable because they will put lots of stuff in their mouths if they can
San Bernardino is a mountain lion
Oklahoma is a bobcat because of those tweets(ifykyk)
San Antonio i think is a bat. I’m thinking Mexican free tailed or hoary bat OH WAIT WHAT IF HE WAS AN ARMADILLO god I can’t decide with him
Colorado is a big horn sheep good for him cause someone had to be
And because I have to have at least one reptile in the mix I put Massachusetts as a gopher snake :3 and yes I plan to use him as an excuse to draw nagas
I had said a while back that gov would be a dragon it’s just a matter of what kind of dragon he’d be. I think hydra would be cool to combine him with some of the branches, but maybe a basilisk would be dope
Arizona I thought would be cool as a cactus cat
And that’s all I got for now so idk

Throwback Thursday
Rec one of your fics written at least a week ago and tag other writers.
The badly summarized wip poll reminded me of another awkward Gil-galad origin story I've written, so I'm going to link it.
Where the Shadows Are
Fingon really, really, really wants a child. Maedhros really, really, really doesn't. They compromise by having a child.

Can The Gopher from Caddyshack Defeat Saitama?
Tumblr media
Rules: a character can only defeat Saitama if they
1: Can avoid getting punched, AND
2: It is funnier for them to win. Do not apply powerscaling logic to this poll.
Vote under the cut if you read the rules
