I just finished reading the latest chapter of TPTMB and I just wonder- why are Jaina and Sylvanas not doing the tactical route i.e use invisibility and portals/teleportation at night to steal the cows they need? You mention some of the reasons why- like that Jaina couldn’t do anything else- but doing a night operation or some such seems more Sylvanas’ style and if they are doing a full tactical approach she wouldn’t need to worry about multitasking. Or maybe they’re planning on doing that eventually but they need at least some idea for scouting purposes before doing anything? Sorry I just wonder if I am misunderstanding

You're not misunderstanding--it's based on a WoW mechanic that I didn't fully explain in text, although it came through more clearly in the new chapter.

In short: Jaina can only portal places she's seen personally. She has to go there normally first, then she can portal there all she wants.

Until she visits Laura in person, she can't make a portal to the livestock market. The Gorean women can draw all the maps she wants, but she still can't portal.

Why not at night? Like most pre-modern cities, Laura closes the gates at dusk. Plausibly they could sneak in (banshee form for Sylvanas + invisibility for Jaina), steal some cows, then portal back. But that has the same general problem as Jaina being invisible in daylight, ie, if it goes wrong it goes very wrong very fast and there's no backup plan.

Whereas--as can be seen in the new chapter!--by going in daylight they have several possible fallbacks that still leave the cover more or less intact and remind the residents that Laura should really not come seeking out this group of free women.

(Of course, extradiegetically, it's because I'm gay and the slave Leia problem again. Like the mission is doing other things and there are important plotlines being advanced but also. Gay.)

i LOVE writing method questions this is such a fun one, because the answer isn't super straight forward and also says a lot about my writing process.

it'll be helpful to have ch4 up in the background for this.

so when i started writing the first draft of that chapter, i knew a couple of things. one is that just, thematically, the freed slaves had to have personalities and be individuals. otherwise i'm undercutting my own point. the other was it'd be helpful to have someone recently from earth, and in any small group there's someone who's going to be the focal point for violence, either deliberately or by lack of other options.

that was barbara and diana.

diana got slightly more fleshed out because i'm also constantly talking about responses to trauma, and one of those responses is just to dig further and further into fight, that you get beaten up so you double down, you get beaten up AGAIN and you dig in HARDER, until they kill you or sell you on as a curiosity. that's diana.

and then i started writing the scene and realized they'd all need names asap. because i was just getting words on the page, and at this point exactly one of them had a name--diana, straight up referencing artemis--i just gave everyone placeholder names A-F.

barbara was the second to get her final name, i think i pulled up popular girls names of the 1950s and went straight for the Bs.

okay so that's two. i keep writing the scene. the question is how diana got beaten up this time, and the answer that felt right is she stepped in the way of someone else's punishment. that person would be the newest slave in the chain, someone just captured who doesn't know all the rules yet.

i don't remember how that person wound up being A but there we are--one newly captured slave, so the single most traumatized person in that camp. everyone else has had some time to process their state and assimilate it, but alina hasn't. more on alina came later, all i knew when writing chapter 4 was she was the new kid.

emris and corinna were interchangable at this point.

fern came entirely out of this single line of narration from jaina:

Fern is...Fern is why there’s a saying to beware the quiet ones. She’s contained, not shut down, and terse, not silent.

i let that bounce around my hindbrain for a bit. all through chapter 4, antagonistic lines are given to diana, other lines equally between emris, corinna, and barbara. fern is lurking, alina is shutdown.

between draft 1 and betaing, i pulled up the world's worst fandom wiki and picked through slave names. i did keep the A-F name scheme for simplicity. alina, corinna, and emris are all canonical gorean slave names (yay?). alina also being a dark ranger is genuine coincidence and i did not realize it until after posting the chapter (...like, embarassingly late) but i'm totally going to run with that don't worry. fern remained fern. my hindbrain was working hard on her and i had a vibe growing. diana remained diana because that's too perfect for her to change.

i post ch4. i write interlude 1. i get to the next chapter (New Reality) and go hmm, what the fuck have i already established?

turns out, enough! everyone got A Personality trait in ch4, completely by accident: diana (fighty), fern (suspicious), alina (traumatized), barbara (from earth), corinna (interested in magic), and emris (impulsive). cool! so i ran with those a bit.

also between ch4 and ch5 i realize that alina has to have come from somewhere, and while she could have come from a city, they're all fucking around the northern forests anyway, they're coming close to intersecting with some canon characters, why not make her a panther girl?

which sorted out a lot of problems actually. it gave me an intro for a discussion ON panther girls and in turn the gathering (which needed to happen before sylvanas would be willing to discuss teldrassil, which is an essential prereq for jaina to fuck her), gave me the setup for recruiting the panther girls, let me pinpoint when exactly this happens in the books, so on.

it was also at this point that i parsed what's going on with fern. some people cope with trauma by becoming more intensely themselves (diana). some people just disassociate and leave nothing in front (alina). and some people compartmentalize to the point that they start splitting themselves. and that's fern. in the 20th century fern might be DID or a system, on Gor she thinks of herself as being a series of people, replacing and updating her identity to cope with the world she's stuck in.

so fern as a person is very new--she literally pulled the name out of thin air (or the plant in front of her) when sylvanas and then jaina asked for names, and she wanted to see if (a) any of the other slaves would mention it (they wouldn't, they're not backstabbers) and (b) jaina/sylvanas would call her out on it thanks to having a prior name in felro's records (wtf no.). but she might stick with fern for the forseeable future, because it's a much more flexible (and frankly, healthier) personality than some of the prior ones.

i keep writing.

emris remains a little impulsive--honestly at this moment she's the one of the six who's had the least actual work put in, which i feel bad about. alina came out of her shell and has put together the two halves of herself, the hardass panther girl and the shattered slave, to be someone who can lead with empathy. diana continues to be fighty and gay :) barbara pulls on her earth skills to take over some of the inevitable recordkeeping. fern is fern.

and corinna continues to be very interested in magic...

so tl;dr: i started with some single point character outlines and knowledge of how trauma works, and let everyone grow on their own as i continued writing. they're not lead characters, they don't need fully rounded personalities, but a couple of points for each of them lets me give them consistent characterization. and leaving myself flexibility to start with so i can hone in on the themes i actually want to talk about later.

A question for those familiar with A Handmaid's Tale (Novel, movie, and TV series versions).

How exactly was Gilead supposed to sustain itself? In twenty to thirty years all the handmaids would be infertile. Then what? All the children being born are the children of the ruling class. The slave / serving class would just die out. What then?

Also I was kind of bothered by the TV show adaptation.

First, I stopped watching because after a while it felt like Torture p0rn or thinly disguised fetishism like Gorean role play. To me it got boring, repetitive, and bleak.

Second, I didn't like like that show made it all about sexism and ignored that the culture was also very racist too. I know that they would have had to use an all white cast if they followed the book where all non-white people were "sent to their countries of origin." But surely someone could have creatively addressed the racism of that world.
