The Four - Oil on Canvas 20 x 36"

This was a bit of a spontaneous painting, I didn't really have a plan when I started. I threw a layer of raw umber on the canvas then using a rag and some mineral spirits tried to pick out some shapes/faces.

The 'pick out' technique can give some really dramatic contrast and is super forgiving if you need to make corrections during the first layer.

it's kinda giving me 4 horsemen/apocalyptic vibes. Maybe 4 Papas of the Apocalypse?? 👻

Someone in the studio said they were seeing angels in abstract patterns around their faces.

May 1st marks the return of the sun, so eat, drink and be merry. Or if you’re like me, wander around Florence for 4 hours with your sketchbook until it starts raining too hard to draw properly. Yup! I worked on some quick little designs that further my exploration of the way women are portrayed in Christianity, plus some Dante because I’m nothing if not consistent. So far I have something vaguely depicting the old taboo of the Red Tent (Eve and the “Original Sin”), the condemnation of feminine beauty as the root of temptation (Helen of Troy), and of course the proclivity of man to denounce powerful women as witches (Joan of Arc). Shown are just some preliminary water color sketches, without shading or anything, so the colors are a bit off, and the places that inspired my sketches. Of course they’re cropped a bit because Instagram is annoying but 🤷🏻‍♀️ I still like showing some of the things I’m working on. Ironically enough this theme lines up with the Met Gala, though as many may know I’ve been exploring this theme since highschool! These will be limited release for the Halloween season, and once these (and the embellished ones) are sold, that’s it folks!  These shall be no more, and new minders shall be invented to take it’s place! They take 1-3 business days to complete (I mean, spray paint one side, let it dry, flip over and spray paint other side, let dry, quality control check, spray paint again if some need it, assemble, let glue dry for 24 hours. You know, all that good stuff)

Perhaps Halloween/goth/murder minders…all year round? What do you all think? Would you buy them even in February? Or may? OR July? I have so many embellishments left over for a number of high voted designs. Comments would be appreciated on if you would buy these year round for your goth aesthetic or halloween aesthetic…. or share around if you know someone who would love a goth magnet and or needle minder, or someone who is into steampunk, or someone who is into true crime documentaries. I don’t want to feel like these are a flop. which they could be since I didn’t start these in September to be ready before halloween.
