Wentworth Woodhouse is a Grade I listed stately home in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. It has the longest façade of any country house in England and stands in 87 acres of gardens and grounds. @wentworth_woodhouse was built for the 1st Marquess of Rockingham from circa 1735, the work continuing over four decades. During the Second World War, the mansion was taken over for use by Military Intelligence. 🌳 The parks at Wentworth Woodhouse were originally laid out by Humphrey Repton and he described it as one of his most ambitious projects. Day 23 of @ahellaloadofhistory #30daychallenge Share some local history. This is the Sankey Viaduct. It is a designated Grade I listed building and has been described as being "the earliest major railway viaduct in the world". In 1826, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway Company (L&MR) was authorised to construct the world's first intercity railway. One obstacle on the selected 50 km route between Liverpool and Manchester was the Sankey Valley. The company's principal engineer, George Stephenson, designed the Sankey Viaduct for the double-track railway to traverse the valley and Sankey Canal with sufficient clearance for the masts and sails of the Mersey flats that used the canal. The viaduct was built between 1828 and 1830, although work on the structure did not finish until the middle of 1833. On 15 September 1830, the viaduct was opened along with the Liverpool & Manchester railway. Padley Chapel. The former gatehouse to Padley Hall dates back to the 14th century. After Henry VIII suppressed the monasteries It was High Treason for any priest ordained abroad to be in the Kingdom, and anyone harbouring such priests was liable to be put to death. In 1588, Padley Manor, the residence of the recusant John Fitzherbert was raided. Two travelling priests – Nicholas Garlick and Robert Ludlam – were staying overnight. St Albans Clock Tower, built between 1403 and 1412 has been claimed to be the only remaining medieval town belfry in England. 🕰 ‘A mediaeval belfry almost unique in England, it contains a large curfew bell dating from 1335.
