You All Grow Up and Leave Me - Piper Weiss
Tumblr media
Summary: A combination memoir of Weiss girlhood in the 90s and true crime story of her tennis coach, who stalked and attempted to abduct another student when Weiss was fourteen.
Quote: “Tennis has a renewed sex appeal with a narrative to match. Agassi, the stud; Pete Sampras, the handsome young underdog. The epic rivalry of Steffi Graf and Monica Seles. And the prodigy, Jennifer Capriati—who, a few months earlier, replaced Mary Lou Retton as every little girl’s Olympic hero, ringing in the nineties in her Stars and Stripes windbreaker at the Barcelona games, raising her gold medal as high as her hair-sprayed wall of bangs. In a year, eighteen-year-old Seles will be stabbed on the court by a deranged Graf fan, and in two years Capriati will become a cautionary tale, but in this moment, both represent tennis’s emerging new star: the teenage girl.”
My rating: 4.0/5.0   Goodreads: 3.28/5.0
Review: Weiss balances the two sides of her narrative well. She presents a heart-aching portrait of what it was like to be a teenage girl, vulnerable and in desperate need of approval. It is also an open-eyed portrait of her tennis coach, Gary Wilensky, a man that she once had great affection for but now understands as a predator. She isn’t sympathetic to Wilensky—as the scope of his crimes become clear throughout the story it becomes more or less impossible to be—but she’s honest about the appeal he had as a coach and mentor when she was young, using the evidence of her experience to reinforce the factual narrative about how Wilensky operated as a child predator. It can feel rambling in places, but the two narrative threads coalesce into a surprising and powerful conclusion.
The audiobook, narrated by Brittany Pressley, is full of personality.
Read-alike: For a similar mix of memoir and true crime, try We Keep the Dead Close - Becky Cooper

Earth firmament
Tumblr media
In response to the concerning trend we see here, this article will focus on some of the Bible verses most frequently referenced by Christian proponents of the flat earth theory. For Christians who claim that the Earth is flat, a single Bible verse is considered superior to any number of scientific arguments. Unfortunately, it has been noted that many Christians have become swept up in this trend, using shaky theology to argue their points. Denver Radio / YouTube Debate on the Firmament between well-known creationist and atheist opponents.Against the background of declining confidence in the elites-be they political, religious or scientific-the flat earth theory has lately been revived and promoted by a wave of fake news and misinformation that circulates on social media.Wikisource has the text of the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica article Firmament. After Galileo began using a telescope to examine the sky it became harder to argue that the heavens were perfect, as Aristotelian philosophy required, and by 1630 the concept of solid orbs was no longer dominant. Tycho Brahe's studies of the nova of 1572 and the Comet of 1577 were the first major challenges to the idea that orbs existed as solid, incorruptible, material objects, and in 1584 Giordano Bruno proposed a cosmology without a firmament: an infinite universe in which the stars are actually suns with their own planetary systems. This became the dominant model in the Classical and Medieval world-view, and even when Copernicus placed the Sun at the centre of the system he included an outer sphere that held the stars (and by having the earth rotate daily on its axis it allowed the firmament to be completely stationary). Around the 4th to 3rd centuries BCE the Greeks, under the influence of Aristotle who argued that the heavens must be perfect and that a sphere was the perfect geometrical figure, exchanged this for a spherical Earth surrounded by solid spheres. The ancient Hebrews, like all the ancient peoples of the Near East, believed the sky was a solid dome with the Sun, Moon, planets and stars embedded in it. The caption underneath the engraving (not shown here) translates to "A medieval missionary tells that he has found the point where heaven and Earth meet." The Flammarion engraving (1888) depicts a man crawling under the edge of the sky, depicted as if it were a solid hemisphere, to look at the mysterious Empyrean beyond.

Cleaning supplies, paints, glues and other items can release harmful chemicals into indoor air. Removing them from that air can be tricky and expensive. But Stuart Strand thinks houseplants may be able to help.
Strand is an engineer at the University of Washington in Seattle. He studies ways to clean up the environment using plants and other living things.
The idea he’s working with is hardly new. NASA researchers first proposed it in the 1980s. When plants take in air through their leaves, they can use proteins called enzymes to disarm toxic chemicals. But most enzymes only work on a few types of chemicals. And plants may not have enzymes that tackle each of the pollutants in their environment. So plants’ usefulness for cleaning up pollution is limited without some help from scientists.
Strand’s team decided to work with a houseplant called pothos (POH-thoes) ivy. They boosted its pollution-breakdown ability by adding a pollution-busting gene. In tests, this altered plant removed some pollution from the air.
Strand hopes such plants will help tackle the widespread problem of home air pollution. Indoor levels of those chemicals tend to be small. But if people breathe them in every day for years and year, they might lead to disease, such as cancer. Small children and teens may get extra-large doses if they spend more time at home than their parents.
Strand’s team starting by giving plants the gene to make an enzyme called 2E1. It’s a liver enzyme shared by all mammals, including people. They used the rabbit version of this gene because they had worked with it before.
This enzyme targets small, carbon-rich molecules called VOCs. (That stands for volatile organic compounds.) VOCs are a big problem. Because they turn into a gas at room temperature, they are fairly easy to inhale. Once in our bodies, VOCs can cause breathing troubles and other problems. They can also damage DNA, increasing the risk of cancer.
Inside the liver, 2E1 can break down VOCs at the molecular level. Strand’s team wanted to know whether this liver enzyme would do the same thing inside a leaf. The good news, they found: It does.
One tough plant
The researchers chose to work with pothos ivy — also known as “devil’s ivy” — because it’s already a popular houseplant. “Even I can’t kill pothos ivy,” Strand says, “and I’m not very good with houseplants.”
They took baby plants that were only a few centimeters tall and put them in bottles. The bottles held just some water, a few nutrients and air.
After sealing the bottles, the researchers injected one of two common indoor VOCs into each bottle. Some bottles received benzene (BEN-zeen). It’s a common ring-shaped carbon-based chemical found in many things, including gasoline. Benzene often enters homes through attached garages. Other bottles got chloroform (KLOR-oh-form). This chemical forms in chlorine-treated water, like tap water. It can escape into the air during hot showers.

Scientists tested the air-cleaning power of genetically modified pothos ivy by putting small plants in sealed bottles with polluted air.

Strand’s team also set up bottles with regular pothos ivy, and bottles with no plant at all. They let all the bottles sit in the lab for more than a week. Each day, the scientists sampled the air inside the bottles. They ran these samples through a machine called a gas chromatograph (Kroh-MAT-uh-graf). It can identify the chemicals in air.
All the chloroform bottles started out with the same amount of the gas. In bottles with the gene-altered ivy, chloroform levels fell 82 percent within three days. Chloroform levels in bottles with regular plants barely budged.
Results with benzene were similar. Its level in bottles with normal pothos dropped slightly over eight days (due to small leaks). It did the same in plant-free bottles. But in bottles with ivy able to make the 2E1 enzyme, benzene plunged by about 75 percent.
Strand and his colleagues shared their findings January 2 in Environmental Science & Technology.
Cleaning house
The results of the experiment confirm that adding 2E1 helped pothos ivy break down common VOCs. But cleaning all the air inside a tiny bottle is easier than detoxifying an entire house.
For one thing, houses and apartments are much bigger. Indeed, a plant in the living room may not be able to clean up air in the kitchen. “If you want to remove [toxic pollutants] from the air and you really want to do it well, you’ve got to move the air past the plants,” Strand says. “You can’t just have the plant sitting over there in a corner.”
VOC levels in homes tend to be much lower than those that Strand’s team tested. The researchers will need to try the ivy in air with very, very small amounts of VOCs, says M. Carmen Martínez. A plant biologist, she works at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain.
In fact, Strand’s team is doing tests to find out whether ivy with the 2E1 gene can clean air in real-world homes. If it works, they hope one day to sell these plants in stores.
Still, there’s one more hurdle such plants will need to clear, says Majbrit Dela Cruz. And that is whether people will be willing to use them.
Dela Cruz is a biologist at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. She studies how plants interact with chemicals, although not as part of this study. Some people distrust genetically modified organisms, also called GMOs, she notes. They may worry that adding genes to plants will have unexpected effects. Or they may fear that houseplants with rabbit genes will escape into the environment.
Strand will have to prove that 2E1 ivy won’t spread its genes outdoors before getting approval to sell it in the United States. (Pothos ivy can’t survive in cold weather, so in many places it wouldn’t live long enough to cause problems.) Even then, some people may not be willing to bring a plant with rabbit genes into their home. “Whether it’s of use in our homes,” says Dela Cruz, will depend “on whether people will accept that.”

Tennis Paralympics Entry List for Tokyo 2022
According to Connor Crenshaw, weheelchair tennis made its Paralympic debut in 1992 in Barcelona. It is administered by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Since then, the sport has been a component of the Games since its inception. The game is a popular spectator sport, with over 50,000 people anticipated to attend. It used to be a demonstration sport, but it is now an official medal-awarding sport.
In Tokyo, there are several excellent wheelchair tennis stars participating. Alfie Hewett is the No.2 seed in the men's singles, having beaten Naomi Kunieda in the Roland Garros final. Diede de Groot is the world No. 1 in women's singles, and she has won four Grand Slam titles, including Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Alcott and Davidson are also competing in the quad doubles event, where they have won five medals.
The ITF has also released the complete doubles and singles entry lists for Tokyo 2020. The Games will be place in Tokyo's Ariake Tennis Park. The men's and women's contests will take place from August 27th to September 4th. There will be six gold medals given in each category, as well as medals for men and women in the quad category. Athletes from 31 nations, including the United States, will compete in this event.
However, Hewett and Reid are the two other wheelchair tennis players who did not make the podium. Both the British team have experienced defeats, with Hewett falling in the doubles final against Reid. Hewett and Reid will now compete for the bronze medal in singles. In a painfully unfortunate turn of events, the British pair's gold medal dreams will be dashed. Other wheelchair tennis players, meanwhile, will be contending for silver and bronze medals.
Diede de Groot, the World No. 1 wheelchair tennis player, has won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. In the quarterfinals on Tuesday, the Dutch star defeated Japanese competitor Momoko Ohtani. This win puts her on pace for a historic 'Golden Slam,' consisting of four Grand Slam championships, two singles crowns, and an Olympic gold medal. Only Steffi Graf, who won all four major championships in 1988, has done it in her career.
Connor Crenshaw  pointed out that, wheelchair tennis is one of the summer Paralympic sports. It is divided into three categories: singles, doubles, and quads. Players in the quad category must have significant upper-limb limitations and may potentially have additional disabilities. This category is commonly referred to as the Mixed division. Many players clip their rackets to their hands, while others utilize motorized wheelchairs. More information may be found on the Tennis website.
Wheelchair tennis follows the same regulations as able-bodied tennis. The ball must bounce twice before the player may return it. This second bounce might be within or outside the court lines. Wheelchair players must stop before serving and are only allowed to push with one wheel. The matches are best-of-three, with a tie-break if required. The game has a long history of success, with several medals.
Wheelchair tennis debuted at the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona. It is an international sport accessible to all athletes with physical limitations. Wheelchair tennis is played on doubles courts with the same size as the able-bodied game. Players may also use a racket strapped to their hands. Electric wheelchairs are also available for players in this category. The sport has become so popular that it is currently played in over 100 nations.
Connor Crenshaw's opinion, wheelchair tennis provides several advantages to players. It encourages tactical thinking, enhances hand-eye coordination, and increases aerobic exercise. Wheelchair tennis athletes have major disabilities to one or both legs but normal arm function, according to the International Paralympic Committee's classification system. Wheelchair tennis players are often categorised as open. They are not expected to compete against players of normal strength and function. Wheelchair tennis players, on the other hand, may play a complete set of games.

EUROPE INITIATION - PART 3: PARIS
It’s hard to pin down when my French awakening started.
It might have been in 1992 when as a  little boy I watched the Roland Garros Ladies Final on tv with my father. While watching the match I heard him cuss like like a sailor as Monica Seles and Steffi Graf slugged it out in a thrilling final set which Seles eventually won, 10-8. This match was bananas! And I also learned my first French words from the match:
Égalité = deuce, but literally “equality” or “tied” (when the game is at 40-40). This term would then later come in handy when I learn about about egalitarian societies.
S'il vous plaît = literally means “please” or “if you would please” but in tennis speak it’s basically used by the umpire to tell the crowd to “Shut up please. And thanks!” So picking it up as a young boy whenever I hear someone being loud or plainly saying something ludicrous I would precociously say, “S'il vous plaît.” “Shut up please. And thanks!” 😁
I also learned to count in French but only with the numbers 15, 30 and 40. Teehee! 😁
Well, on second thought, my French awakening may have happened on another occasion. It might have been through Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Mostly through the music, I must say. Tom Hulce’s version of “Out There” is a long time favorite and of course Lea’s Eponine singing “On My Own” is quite remarkable. (Side note: while I was in Paris, I stayed near the river Seine and the Notre Dame cathedral and literally heard the bells of Notre Dame and couldn’t help but hum, well,  The Bells of Notre Dame. It felt so surreal! I also imagined Quasimodo ringing the bells himself! Haha!)
But then there was French art. Claude Monet’s work has always fascinated me. So maybe Monet was the one responsible for my French awakening.
There was also French cinema. In my teens, the Embassy of France would hold a French Film Festival at the Shang and I would queue up every year to see some of the best French movies. Three films particularly moved me:
Jean Renoir’s La Grande Illusion (The Grand Illusion) probably the best war film ever made
The wonderfully acted La Vie rêvée des anges (The Dreamlife of Angels)
Indochine starring the amazing Catherine Deneuve
There’s a lot to draw from, and as I look back I couldn’t pin it down to a single moment in time where my deep fascination to anything French began. I can tell you this - the moment I arrived in Gare de Lyon and as I emerged from the train station and into Paris it didn’t feel like I was in a foreign city. It almost felt like I’ve been there before, many times over. It almost felt like I was coming home.
****
Picture story time! They’re not chronological - yet again - coz Tumblr.
****
This was at the train ride from Barcelona’s Sant station going to Gare de Lyon in Paris. Funny story - I booked a first class seat because, well, who doesn’t wanna be comfortable when they travel right? At the train station I was asking someone where the first class lounge was and I got weird reactions or I dunno maybe somebody pointed me to a set of chairs that were in some corner somewhere - I don’t remember. But what I learned was - first class train seats in Europe aren’t any special. Also, you literally have to carry your own luggage into the train. I actually asked a fellow passenger while we were about to board if that was normal. He laughed. So to the uninitiated (me), first class train ride does not equal first class airplane ride. I got over that unmet expectation coz baby I was going to Paris! Woohoo! Nothing else mattered at that time! 😁(UPDATE: after researching this over on YouTube it looks like this depends on the train you’re taking. It’s like PAL business class (meh) vs. Qatar or Emirates BC experience (wow!))

This was at the summit of the Eiffel Tower. Got the “VIP skip the line” ticket but still had to queue up for hours. As far as I’m concerned, going up the summit isn’t worth it. I feel like queueing up that long for anything is a waste of time. And then going down, you still have to queue up for the elevator as well. So just to go up and down the Eiffel Tower becomes a half day affair at least. My good friend Mona told me they should have offered me the option to rappell down the tower LOL! Between wasting time and something fun/dangerous, I would have taken the latter option easily.
Tumblr media
My favorite piece of art from the Louvre.
Tumblr media
This was the Japanese garden in Monet’s estate in Giverny. It’s like being in his famous Lilies painting. It’s quite an experience. Book the trip at Viator!
Tumblr media
Isn’t Paris beautiful? Alex brought me here to see this view. Actually, he brought me everywhere in Paris. Memorize ko na nga ang Paris guys kasi nilakad namin lahat. Haha! But I’m glad he did coz I really now feel like I couldn’t get lost in Paris. He also taught me how to use the Metro - and if you ask me, the Paris Metro is easier to navigate (and waaaay cleaner) than the New York subway.
Tumblr media
Venus de Milo. In the world of art - the powers that be dictate what’s valuable. Kinda like hype machinery. Just like the Cambell soup “art” by Warhol - madami kasi syang friends na alta who backed him up and hailed his work as “art”. I think same story sa Venus de Milo pero with this one it was during a time when civilizations were upholding their cultures by amassing (and salvaging) art. The French needed to collect significant pieces of art - and if I heard the story right - when they found the Venus de Milo they declared it as “the one” - the piece of art that they have that they can be proud of. In a way, it’s significant na rin but if you ask me about its artistic value - I’ve seen a lot of better sculptures but we also have to remember that art is also something that describes a moment in history so we couldn’t deny Venus de Milo’s significance. Ok na rin. Choice naman nila yan. Haha!
Tumblr media
iPhone only. Didn’t even get to use my G7X camera. Used and abused the portrait mode feature of the iPhone.
Tumblr media
Thumbs up pose again. Note to self in the next travel photos - surf’s up pose naman for variety. LOL!
Tumblr media
Dilaw na dilaw.
Tumblr media
To be fair, I like this photo from the inverted pyramid at the Louvre. Pero naka thumbs up na naman. Ugh.
Tumblr media
When in Paris - Vuitton.
Tumblr media
Don’t I look giddy here? Romanticism guys. Cupid bringing Psyche back to life. The placement of the sculpture at the Louvre was perfect too coz it gets natural lighting that makes it look even more dramatic. I was totally in awe of this sculpture!
Tumblr media
Eiffel Tower again. Still not Facebook banner levels. Oh well, next time.
Tumblr media
Sacre Coeur. Sacred Heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought I was being bold when I decided to go for this shot. I would later find out that a lot of people do this. Yung nakatayo sa gitna ng daan. K. 😂
Tumblr media
I tried doing an emotive pose here. But still not Facebook banner quality. Check out the flip flop too.
Tumblr media
Monet’s garden. In fact, I got to go inside his house! BFF levels! Just kidding!
Tumblr media
This was another attempt. But so casual. Pambahay look. Hahaha!
Tumblr media
This was taken from the window of Monet’s bedroom. Nice no?
Tumblr media
Eiffel Tower at night taken with an iPhone.
Tumblr media
French countryside. Nag traditional French lunch lang.
Tumblr media
This window type of photo is very Paris.
Tumblr media
Versailles. I highly recommend going to Versailles to understand the French better and why aesthetics is an intrinsic part of their culture. Their King literally wanted the French to be the best dressed and best looking people in the world. He even cared so much about his hair - hence the pictures of people with wigs back then. And then there’s the Palace of Versailles which he wanted to be the grandest palace ever. Na achieve naman nya. Daming gold.
Tumblr media
Montmartre. Mainit!
Tumblr media
Uso na pala selfie dati pa.
Tumblr media
Outtake at the Notre Dame.
Tumblr media
Dior store. Nice no?
Tumblr media
Louvre.
Tumblr media
Versailles. Gold talaga yang mga yan guys. HAHA!
Tumblr media
Seine.
Tumblr media
Bawal daw pumasok si Sia dito guys baka ano daw gawin at makabasag. LOL! Waley. 🤦‍♂️
Tumblr media
And that’s all that I could share to you guys! Thanks again to Viator for helping me make my vacation seamless.
