Grammy 2019

Ed eccomi, con il solito ritardo che mi contraddistingue, a cercare di non essere noioso e soporifero parlando dei Grammy due settimane dopo la loro assegnazione. Non potrò parlare di tutte le categorie ma discuterò solo delle principali/quelle che credo possano essere più interessanti.

RECORD OF THE YEAR - “This Is America” - Childish Gambino: si sapeva che fosse tra i favoriti, complice l’importante messaggio sociale della canzone. Tuttavia questo premio va al brano con la miglior produzione, quindi riguarda più l’ambito tecnico, e questo rende, a mio parere, un po’ discutibile quest’assegnazione. Per fare due nomi, “God’s Plan” e “Rockstar” secondo me avrebbero meritato di più.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR - “Golden Hour” - Kacey Musgraves: dire che è stato spiazzante è riduttivo. Dire che è stato un errore è sbagliato. Album acclamatissimo dalla critica, inserito in tutte le classifiche di fine anno ai primi posti, vincitore di tutti i Grammy a sua disposizione (questo, Best Country Album e altri due premi per i suoi singoli), merita un ascolto anche da chi solitamente non ascolta musica country: è piacevolissimo.

SONG OF THE YEAR - “This Is America” - Childish Gambino: questo lo capisco: questo premio è assegnato agli autori per la scrittura del brano, e su questo aspetto Donald Glover e soci hanno fatto centro.

BEST NEW ARTIST - Dua Lipa: quanto sono felice. Possiamo dibattere sulla definizione di Dua Lipa come “new artist” dato che il suo primo singolo è del 2015, ma nell’ultimo anno è definitivamente entrata nel gruppo delle grandi popstar mondiali. Non ha sbagliato un colpo in tutto l’anno, e il sostanzioso numero di premi vinti tra il 2018 e il 2019 lo dimostra.

BEST POP SOLO PERFORMANCE - “Joanne (Where Do You Think You're Goin'?) - Lady Gaga: sono convinto che si fosse presentata ai Grammy solo per ricevere gli ovvi premi che sarebbero stati assegnati a “Shallow” (e che poi ha effettivamente vinto), ma questo per “Joanne” viene quasi dal nulla: terzo singolo dall’album omonimo, rilasciato ad inizio 2018, non avrei scommesso un centesimo sulla sua vittoria contro mega-hit come “Havana” e “God Is A Woman”. Ma quando Gaga decide di scrivere una canzone di qualità, lo fa e basta. Complimenti a lei, che riesce ogni volta a reinventarsi, risultando sempre tra le prime della classe.

BEST POP DUO/GROUP PERFORMANCE - “Shallow” - Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper: appunto. Questa vittoria era prevista e prevedibile, visto l’enorme successo del brano e il favore della critica. Destinato a vincere, non ha deluso, forse anche per mancanza di alternative che potessero avvicinarsi a quel livello.

BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM - “Sweetener” - Ariana Grande: Ariana ha confezionato un buon album in cui tutto, dalla voce alla produzione, funziona come dovrebbe. Viene premiata di conseguenza in una delle categorie più in evidenza e contro sfidanti del calibro di Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, P!nk e Taylor Swift. Fino all’anno prossimo potrà vantarsi di essere la principessa del pop.

BEST DANCE RECORDING - “Electricity” - Silk City & Dua Lipa Featuring Diplo & Mark Ronson: questa canzone fa ballare come matti? Sì. Questo basta per assegnarle il premio? Sì. La produzione di Diplo e Ronson è ottima, quello che ci si aspetterebbe da questi due, e Dua è convincente come ci ha abituati. Il brano fa quello che deve portando l’ascoltatore a tenere il tempo, alzarsi, scuotersi e trovarsi alla fine a saltare in giro senza sapere come. Molti hanno criticato la scelta di non assegnare il premio a Virtual Self solo per non essere abbastanza pop, ma la vera ragione è che “Electricity” è un pezzo ben costruito e che ha meritato il successo ricevuto.

BEST DANCE/ELECTRONIC ALBUM - “Woman Worldwide” - Justice: no. No e no. No e no e no. La loro peggiore versione di tutti i loro brani (anche quelli già deboli in partenza, e sto parlando della quasi totalità di “Woman”) non può ricevere il premio come miglior album dance/elettronico. Di tutto quello che si trova in questo disco, si salvano solo un paio di cose. Sostengo quello che sostengono i loro fan. La loro carriera è in continuo peggioramento da un album all’altro. Rischiano di diventare irrilevanti. In questa categoria c’era SOPHIE che avrebbe sicuramente meritato maggiormente il premio.

BEST ROCK PERFORMANCE - “When Bad Does Good” - Chris Cornell: un premio alla memoria per un artista apprezzato moltissimo dai colleghi e le cui capacità sono state spesso riconosciute anche dalla critica. Ci mancherà.

BEST ROCK SONG - “Masseduction” - St. Vincent: di tutte le canzoni candidate, è quella con meno views su YouTube. Stavolta all’Academy non hanno guardato i numeri ma hanno ascoltato: un brano di qualità da un album di qualità per sovvertire tutte le aspettative.

BEST ROCK ALBUM - “From The Fires” - Greta Van Fleet: discutissimi per essere soltanto dei copioni dei Led Zeppelin, possono alzare il dito medio ed essere soddisfatti per il premio portato a casa. E’ un riconoscimento del buon lavoro fatto ma non fermerà le critiche.

BEST ALTERNATIVE MUSIC ALBUM - “Colors” - Beck: per essere un album registrato in quattro anni è brevino e non ha colpito il 100% della critica. Tuttavia viene apprezzato dalla giuria dei Grammy, e questo è quello che conta. Complimenti a Beck, che se la doveva vedere con gente non proprio qualunque: Arctic Monkeys, Bjork, David Byrne, St. Vincent.

BEST R&B PERFORMANCE - “Best Part” - H.E.R. Featuring Daniel Caesar: era tra le favorite per il premio e non ha deluso le aspettative. Dopo questa cerimonia la sua carriera è definitivamente decollata e le aspettative per lei si alzano.

BEST URBAN CONTEMPORARY ALBUM - “Everything Is Love” - The Carters: la supercoppia Beyoncé/Jay-Z si porta a casa il premio che forse conta di più tra i tre per cui sono stati nominati. L’album è piaciuto (non a tutti, a dire il vero) ed ha avuto successo. Sottolineati soprattutto i testi, completamente autoreferenziali e che rivelano come questo sia un album che i due hanno scritto soprattutto per loro stessi.

BEST R&B ALBUM - “H.E.R.” - H.E.R.: valgono le considerazioni fatte sopra: era la favorita ma ora non ci accontentiamo e vogliamo sentire le sue prossime uscite nella speranza che siano buone quanto quello che ci ha fatto ascoltare finora.

BEST RAP PERFORMANCE - “King’s Dead” - Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Future & James Blake / “Bubblin” - Anderson .Paak: ex-aequo per questi due brani. Il primo proviene dalla colonna sonora di “Black Panther”; il secondo è un ottimo esempio di come Anderson .Paak stia acquisendo visibilità, parzialmente testimoniata dal favore del suo ultimo album. In un certo senso erano considerabili come gli outsider della categoria, dovendosi scontrare con Cardi B, Drake e Travis Scott.

BEST RAP SONG - “God’s Plan” - Drake: brano fortissimo e dominatore di classifiche, le vendite hanno sicuramente fatto la loro parte per indirizzare questo premio verso Drake, e non penso che qualcuno possa lamentarsene.

BEST RAP ALBUM - “Invasion Of Privacy” - Cardi B: grandissimo successo per lei, il suo album e i suoi singoli, riconosciuto dall’Academy con il premio. Ora è in cima al mondo con il suo album di debutto ed è una delle maggiori star musicali del momento. E’ una nuova diva, un nome di punta, e adesso l’obiettivo è non cadere. Ma sono convinto che lei sappia perfettamente come fare per rimanere in cima alle classifiche. Il suo 2018 non può essere stato un caso.

BEST COUNTRY ALBUM - “Golden Hour” - Kacey Musgraves: ci tengo a ribadire che quest’album è magnifico, e il riconoscimento come miglior album non solo nel suo genere, ma in assoluto, deve essere un invito per tutti ad ascoltarlo. Consigliato, e Kacey Musgraves vincitrice assoluta di questi Grammy.

BEST COMPILATION SOUNDTRACK FOR VISUAL MEDIA - “The Greatest Showman”: abbiamo già visto come questa colonna sonora sia riuscita ad arrivare nella top 5 degli album più venduti negli USA, ora arriva anche il riconoscimento per la sua qualità.

BEST SCORE SOUNDTRACK FOR VISUAL MEDIA - “Black Panther” - Ludwig Goransson: la colonna sonora del film Marvel ha ricevuto molti pareri positivi, confermati da questo premio che funge da ottimo biglietto da visita per gli Oscar.

BEST SONG WRITTEN FOR VISUAL MEDIA - “Shallow” - Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando & Andrew Wyatt: premio per gli autori del brano, una delle assegnazioni più prevedibili, e proprio per questo particolarmente meritata.

BEST RECORDING PACKAGE - “Masseduction” - Willo Perron: premio puramente estetico per come si presenta l’album. Premio discutibile, a mio parere, anche se le alternative non erano chissà cosa.

PRODUCER OF THE YEAR, NON CLASSICAL - Pharrell Williams: cosa non ha fatto quest’anno. The Carters e Ariana Grande sono passati dalle sue mani, e mi sento di dire che quasi tutto quello che tocca diventa oro.

BEST MUSIC VIDEO - “This Is America” - Childish Gambino: prevedibile e meritatissimo, un video bello e impegnato, tra i migliori degli ultimi anni.

Da me, questo è tutto. Spero che la lettura non sia stata faticosa, anche se capisco che passare in rassegna questo elenco di premiati e non avere a che fare con un testo scorrevole può essere fastidioso. Visto che non lo dico da molto tempo, appuntamento alla prossima tappa della nostra odissea musicale!

today, BTS makes history as first k-pop presenter at the world music award called Grammy.

i'm so happy and proud of them. i know they passed a lot of the struggles and hard times to get there; got honor for attending to Grammys. maybe i know not to much ‘bout them, but it's enough.

my feeling right now more than "proud of them", they also give me a power. the power to make people feel the pride that I feel right now. i really wanted to make my own success and make everybody feeling so proud like i'm proud of them.
