One of my favourite things about Buddy Daddies is the fact that Miri is incredibly well-written.
In Episode 8, Miri asks more about Rei's father — her grandpa. She's excited at first, but when she finds out that it won't be possible to meet Suwa Shigeki, she asks, "So is Grandpapa mad at Papa Rei?"
She continues:
Tumblr media
We don't know how Miri frames the argument in her four-year-old mind, but I wouldn't be surprised if she imagined the pair fighting over the last cookie, or something.
Kazuki, however, somewhat forgets that he's talking to a tiny pop and starts telling Miri about the complicated family dynamic:

Watching this part, I felt pretty sceptical — how was Miri going to understand concepts like 'special circumstances', overbearing expectations, family businesses and so on? It would have been pretty ridiculous if she'd followed everything Kazuki said and responded like an adult.
But Miri, darling Miri, zeroes in on one particular part of Kazuki's dialogue:

The bit that really matters to a four-year-old child! The bit that she can understand!
Kazuki corrects Miri. The conversation concludes with Miri coming back on track; she simplifies the situation, no doubt relating it to her own experiences at daycare:

And that's another reason why the writing for Unasaka Miri is fantastic.

classic teen sports marriage moments!
God, I love Whistle!
Moodmaker is the most common personality trait for any sports protagonist, and Sho is a prime example of it. He's basically a sports witch, who has bewitched every player in every team and also every grandpa.
He's turned Shigeki here from disaffected troubled teen, to emotionally open and accepting troubled teen.

Mew!!!!!!
As the very first Mythical Pokemon, and the final pokemon of the original 151, the Psychic-type Mew has a very special place in the franchise. It’s the genetic source of its clone, the ever-popular Legendary Mewtwo (hence the names), and has always been hugely iconic. It leans into its Mythical status quite hard, and has historically been quite complicated to obtain as a result. With its simple pink design and cat-like face, it’s also super cute!!! :3
Tumblr media
Despite Mew’s importance to the franchise, it almost didn’t exist as an actual pokemon at all! It was created and coded into the game by Shigeki Morimoto a mere two weeks before Red and Green’s development was complete using leftover space after the debug feature was removed, and Nintendo wasn’t even initially aware of it. It remained largely unknown in Japan upon release, and in the US, it spawned numerous rumours and theories on how to actually obtain it – most of which were baseless conjecture.
Tumblr media
Most notably, it was associated with a particular truck that couldn’t be accessed through normal gameplay. Located near the S.S. Anne, it was speculated that using Strength on the truck would unearth either Mew or a Rocket Hideout leading to Mew. Naturally, if you managed to access the truck through hacking, using Strength would do nothing and there would be no Mew. But the rumour was pervasive enough for Game Freak to reference it with a nearby Lava Cookie in FireRed and LeafGreen.
Tumblr media
To ACTUALLY obtain Mew, however, you would need to obtain it from special in-person events or performing glitches. The events were initially rather limited – the very first was a special CoroCoro magazine event in which players could send a postcard to the publication and 20 people would be selected, who would then need to mail their game cards to Game Freak and Morimoto would personally trade the Mew to them, then mail the cards back. Convoluted, but imagine being one of those first few people with Mew!
Tumblr media
The point here is that Mew has always been INCREDIBLY elusive and mysterious, making it very difficult to legitimately obtain, which ties directly into series canon: it's so rare that its very existence is questioned, and its elusiveness is maintained further by its ability to turn invisible and transform into other pokemon. Rarity is a hallmark of all Mythicals, sure, but none so much as Mew. This rarity is also often core to its anime appearances, with catching Mew in particular being the primary goal of Goh, the deuteragonist of the latest series.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the anime, Mew’s first proper appearance was the first Pokemon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back. This movie set up Mewtwo as a villain seeking to prove the superiority of clones over their non-clone counterparts, with Mew later appearing and trying to reason with Mewtwo, leading to a violent confrontation between the two. They had a thematic dichotomy going on too, with Mewtwo jaded and distrusting of humans, whereas Mew seemed joyful and innocent. You can see this in their designs as well: the fierce, unnatural Mewtwo vs. the cute and simple Mew.
Tumblr media
Another notable aspect of Mew is it actually contains the DNA for ALL other pokemon, somehow, as a shared ancestor. This role, coupled with its long, umbilical cord-like tail and pink colouration implies Mew is actually based on a fetus! Like, simultaneously a baby and everyone’s grandpa. Being a shared ancestor of everything is kind of a ludicrous concept but it does allow for Mew to canonically learn every attack (functionally every TM, HM, and TR), on top of likely being the source of its aforementioned transformation abilities. The move aspect of this is referenced in the TCG regularly, such as with Mew EX, whose Versatile ability allows it to use the attacks of any other pokemon in play.
Tumblr media
Mew’s got a lovely blue shiny, which contrasts the pink form wonderfully, but I can’t help wishing it had pink eyes to complete the look. Blue fur with blue eyes just isn’t quite striking enough.
Mew’s a fantastic pokemon, and definitely one of my favourite Mythicals. It’s a funky little fetus cat and whilst that doesn’t SOUND inherently appealing, the result absolutely is. Normally pokemon not being available in-game bothers me, but it’s so thematically on-brand for Mew that I don’t even mind that aspect. The only thing I can criticise is that like with many other Gen I pokemon, the design can be a bit tricky to portray well, with its 3D model and some sprites being rather lacking despite a solid design overall.
[Mew voice]/10.

Once my brother and I had beaten Pokemon Emerald and Pokemon Gold/Silver together, we felt as though we were running out of pokemon games to play together. We both wanted to stick to GBC and GBA, so we decided to turn to ROM hacks. Starting with a hack of FireRed: Rocket Edition! As the name of the hack and my drawing imply, it’s a hack where you get to play as Team Rocket, and it was tons of fun!
This was our fastest beaten game, with us starting April 24th, 2020, and finishing just yesterday, May 4th, 2020. Is that a bad thing? Nah, just goes to show how much extra free time we’ve had... And hey, if y’all have any pokemon ROM hack suggestions for us to try next, feel free to let me know!
Now, with all that said, off to the  team stats and general gameplay info under the cut:
Team Citrine, in the order they were caught/stolen (Name, Species, Sex, Moveset):
“Rhubarb”, Vileplume, ♂,  Teeter Dance - Stun Spore - Giga Drain - Acid
“Sled Fast”, Slowbro, ♂,  Slack Off - Blizzard - Psychic - Surf
“Birdra”, Dodrio, ♂,  Quick Attack - Drill Peck - Fly - Pursuit
“Bomb”, Magneton, ⚲,  Discharge - Mirror Shot - Tri Attack - Thunder Wave
“Red Baron”, Dugtrio, ♂,  Sucker Punch - Earthquake - Aerial Ace - Rock Slide
“Klromph”, Muk, ♂,  Shadow Sneak - Gunk Shot - Brick Break - Fire Blast
Team Nelvana, in the order they were caught/stolen (Name, Species, Sex, Moveset):
“Pestilence”, Raticate, ♀, Hyper Fang - Crunch - Quick Attack - Swords Dance
“Weed”, Victreebel, ♂, Leaf Blade - Acid - Growth - Knock Off
“Bro”, Nidoking, ♂, Poison Tail - Rock Slide - Earth Power - Brick Break
“Snap”, Golduck, ♂, Blizzard - Surf - Psychic - Calm Mind
“Dula”, Farfetch’d, ♀, Swords Dance - Fly - Slash - Leaf Blade
“Siccem”, Arcanine, ♂, Flamethrower - Thunder Fang - Crunch - ExtremeSpeed
General Playthrough Notes (Spoilers for Rocket Edition):
Beating the game was around 14 hours each? This is a fairly short hack, but also really well balanced.
Going in to the league itself, my entire party was level 51 except Siccem, and Citrine’s entire party was level 52.
For some notable pokemon theft (you steal pokemon when you’re in Team Rocket): I stole Lance’s aerodactyl (because it was the rarest in the bunch, hardest to “replace” in Lance’s words) while Citrine stole his kingdra, and we both stole Red’s charizard and Oak’s venesaur.
Our nicknaming style here was to just,, nickname our pokemon based on the first thing we think of when obtaining them. It turned out pretty fun, and I at least feel that it fits the Rocket style in a way.
Citrine changed his team a whole lot throughout the game. He also explored a couple more routes than I did, so it evened out a bit in the end.
I named Missing.no “Miracle” because I thought it would be ironic seeing as how everyone else in the game called them “The Catastrophe”. Citrine named his Miggning.no “Big Glitch”.
I prepped a lot of items in the game and used almost none of them the entire time!
In the end, I had a bounty of 25k. I would only usually steal rare pokemon, pokemon that come from important trainers (I didn’t steal from any gym leader though), and just out of spite. This meant that my sentence at the end was only 4 years, which if I/my character had to sit through it instead of Shigeki bailing me out, it could have been manageable.
Citrine, on the other hand, ended up with a bounty of 386k! He stole from everyone and filled up around four and a half pc boxes. This meant that at the end of the game, his jail sentence was 54 years! What a madman.
My fight against Mewtwo lasted five turns. Pestilence set up swords dance twice, then used two crunchs, the second of which was a crit and cut through most of Mewtwo’s health, and then she quick attacked to finish them off. Mewtwo spent that entire time setting up amnesia, reflect, and light screen. Mewtwo was level 70, and Pestilence was level 41. Beware the plague.
Flash Cannon in Citrine’s game was glitched and would crash the game whenever it was used. My game was fine with it. We’re not sure what was up there, but also Citrine’s admin battle sprite was also glitched.
This was a good chance for us to try some new pokemon and revisit some old favorites! We really enjoyed it.
We both don’t like the post credits scene. Falls apart too much when you think about it, and kinda makes all your efforts feel worthless.
Moral of the story: Bill is a two-faced bitch, Blaine and Fuji are limp noodles, Ronnie can exist just nowhere near me, Oak got let off too easy, and Blue is my new best friend.
Oh, and also: fuck Lance, and Shigeki is best grandpa.

still in love with this illustration ( I probably will never not be in love with it).
Tumblr media
1) Miri and Rei's matching outfits. it's hard to tell which of the two would suggest it.
2) Miri is about 6 yrs old, so this takes place roughly one year post canon.
3) Rei's arm position. I think it's a mixture of two things: reassuring himself that Miri is physically fine, and stopping Miri from running to Shigeki.
4) Miri is curious but has probably gone through at least three stranger danger drills since the ending of canon. I'm sure Shigeki was included in the "if you see him and one of us isn't with you, run." category.
5) I don't think this is necessarily their first reunion. this is still testing the waters phase. Rei's "what the hell" face really pulls it together.
