Himalayan Guest in the Haryana Plains: Elusive Racket-Tailed Drongo Surprises Gurugram Birders

In a rare and unexpected turn of events, birders in Gurugram recorded the first-ever sighting of the Greater Racket-Tailed Drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus) within the district’s limits on 27th April 2025. The dramatic encounter unfolded in Jhanjhrola, a semi-arid agricultural patch far from the species’ typical Himalayan and forested terrain.

The first thing that came to my mind is that she would have this long, flowy bird tail...

The Elusive Lesser

A Lesser Racket-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus remifer) making a rare appearance in a lower layer of the Rain Forest in the botanic gardens. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.

Unlike the Greater Racket-tailed, this drongo mostly forages in the closed canopy of the forest and is therefore less seen in the open.

Was drawing my leonin dnd character and he somehow ended up looking like Max, which obviously had me thinking about the whole Dutch Lion stuff, and then what animal I would associate with the other drivers based on looks, region, and personalities.

Max Vertsappen - Transvaal Lion (obvious reasons and Transvaal sometimes have a naturally have a lighter coat.)

Checo Perez - Chocolate Labrador (look friendly but are still considered a gun dog)

Daniel Ricciardo - Honey Badger (for obvious reasons but also they are know to take on and defend against lions in the wild)/Doberman or Beauceron with floppy ears (ears get snipped at Mclaren)

Yuki Tsunoda - Japanese Sparrowhawk (can be aggressive despite their smaller size. Great agility)

Liam Lawson - Bull Terrier (The look really similar, idk how to explain it)

Isack Hadjar - Striped Hyena

Carlos Sainz - Spanish Fighting Bull/Black Andalusian Horse

Charles Leclerc - Thoroughbred Horse/ European Hare

Lando Noriss - Irish Red Setter (again, a family friendly gun dog. Has the curls)

Oscar Piastri - Whistling Kite (not as aggressive as other birds of prey but still a very agile hunter)

Bright Clan leader concept

Here is what I imagined the leader of the Bright Clan would look like. I wanted her to look well elegant in a way.

Size comparison on the left: SC (Shadow Clan, average one, not the leader), BC (Bright Clan), And H (Human).

She has three tails but only the big one in the middle has a hand she can use to sling slugs.

The Name

Originally her name was gonna be Selehadin because it's a pretty-sounding name, but that name means The Righteousness of the Faith.

And I wanted a name that meant light, bright, illuminate, etc. And it has to be of Middle Eastern origin.

So, I got stuck on three names for her:

Alamafruz means Enlightener of the world. 

Mashaal means Light, bright, etc. 

And Ilknur means First Light.

design notes below

- law is based off of snow leopards and leopard seals

- he also has spikes/ spines at the end of his tail

- corazon was inspired by maned wolves, because of how tall those things are (3ft at the shoulder on average!) as well as the greater racket-tailed drongo, that's the reason he has a long trail feather- he'd have two but the other one broke off

-his horns are broken, both due to his childhood and his clumsiness

- he has a chip in his beak and a kink in his tail
