GREENWICH PALACE
The Palace of Placentia, also known as Greenwich Palace, was an English royal residence that was initially built by Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, in 1443. The palace was a pleasaunce; a place designed for pleasure, entertainment, and an escape from the city. It was located at Greenwich on the south bank of the River Thames, downstream from London. On a hill behind the palace he built Duke Humphrey's Tower, later known as Greenwich Castle; it was subsequently demolished to make way for the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, which survives. The original river-side residence was extensively rebuilt around 1500 by Henry VII. A detached residence, the Queen's House, was built on the estate in the early 1600s and also survives. In 1660, the main palace was demolished by Charles II to make way for a proposed new palace, which was never constructed. Nearly forty years later, the Greenwich Hospital (now called the Old Royal Naval College) was built on the site.

ANNE BOLEYN'S LAST DAYS...
With a new Netflix series on Anne Boleyn due to debut, interest in Henry VIII's ill fated second queen is set to peak anew again.
The three part series, entitled 'Blood, Sex and Royalty' is set to debut on November 23rd. It will feature Coronation Street actress Amy James-Kelly in the role of Anne, and Emmerdale actor Max Parker will fill the silk slippers of Henry himself.
Even today, the Tower of London remains the crucible of the all too real medieval mind games that culminated in the abrupt, clinically brutal decapitation of a queen of England. As such, it is a grim, tremendous living time capsule in and of itself...

If you ever have the chance to visit The Painted Hall in Greenwich, walk up to the Upper Hall and take a left. Walk into the centre of the side room and look up. On Saturday afternoon, Talulah and I took the afternoon off and headed to Greenwich. Nothing new there but we hadn't been to The Painted Hall before. It is absolutely stunning. I have no words for it. While the buildings of the Royal Naval College were designed by Christopher Wren, the baroque ceiling and wall decorations were designed and painted by James Thornhill and his team. I just happened to be in the Upper Hall, turned around and saw a Grandad showing his grandchild around. Cute. 168/365 #nessymon365 #Project365 #greenwich #thepaintedhall #jamesthornhill #art #fresco #christopherwren #greenwichpalace #baroque #london #mytinyatlaslondon #exploringlondon #londonbylondoners #ig_london #londondisclosure #londoncollective #metropolis_london #london_city_photo #mysecretlondon #londonguru #londonforyou #londonstreets #londonsbest #london_enthusiast #thelondonear (at The Painted Hall by Christopher Wren) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5n9ok4n3wV/?igshid=bfp88u9no4br

It's a cold and very wet day in London. I'd love to be off somewhere nice instead of at work. Somewhere like The Painted Hall in the Royal Naval College in Greenwich. I love this place designed by Christopher Wren and baroque artwork by James Thornhill. An hour or two wandering around the painted hall, lying on the seating and looking at the ceiling would go down a treat. Do go check it out if you ever get the chance. 196/365 #nessymon365 #Project365 #greenwich #christopherwren #jamesthornhill #art #architecture #baroque #fresco #royalnavalcollege #greenwichpalace #london #mytinyatlaslondon #exploringlondon #londonbylondoners #ig_london #londoncollective #metropolis_london #itssolondon #londonist #london_city_photo #mysecretlondon #thelondonlifeinc #londonsbest #irishblogger #london_enthusiast #thelondonear (at Painted Hall, Royal Naval College) https://www.instagram.com/p/B883pRJnDVh/?igshid=1fr73axjjcx0z

On This Day In Royal History . 6 July 1553 . King Edward VI died aged 15 . . The cause of death and the burial; . ◼ The cause of Edward VI’s death is not certain. As with many royal deaths in the 16th century, rumours of poisoning abounded, but no evidence has been found to support these. . ▪ Another theory held that Edward had been poisoned by Catholics seeking to bring Mary to the throne. . ◼ The surgeon who opened Edward’s chest after his death found that “the disease whereof his majesty died was the disease of the lungs”. The Venetian ambassador reported that Edward had died of consumption in other words, tuberculosis a diagnosis accepted by many historians. . ◼ It is now believed that Edward contracted the tuberculosis after a bout of measles & smallpox in 1552 that suppressed his natural immunity to the disease. Loach suggests instead that his symptoms were typical of acute bronchopneumonia, leading to a “suppurating pulmonary infection” or lung abscess, septicaemia, & kidney failure. . ◼ He was buried in Henry VII Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey on 8 August 1553, with reformed rites performed by Thomas Cranmer. . ◼ The procession was led by “a grett company of chylderyn in ther surples” & watched by Londoners “wepyng & lamenting”; the funeral chariot, draped in cloth of gold, was topped by an effigy of Edward, with crown, sceptre, & garter. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1553 #d6jul #KingofEngland #EdwardVI #EdwardVIofEngland #KingEdwardVI #kingofengland #Royalty #Monarchy #HouseofTudor #RoyalHistory #Greenwichpalace #Tudor #History #EnglishMonarchy #BritishMonarchy #otd #historyinpictures #historyfacts #OnThisDay .
