In stories about growing up for audiences who are growing up themselves, a strong main character is a necessity. Coming-of-age stories have been around for centuries and have always been popular in cinema, from the days of James Dean to the modern world of Netflix originals.

8 Elliot Page – Juno (2007)

Juno is the blueprint for American Independent cinema, primarily for its Oscar-winning script and unconventional story of teen pregnancy. With a host of celebrated actors surrounding them, Elliot Page shines in what is arguably their most memorable and beloved role.

To bring to life hard-partying Sutter from Tim Tharp’s novel of the same name, the correct actor was called upon. Miles Teller oozes charm in this role and makes it easy to understand how Sutter has made it through life without a thought for the future since everything comes easily to him at the moment.

Besides being the life of the party and effortlessly sweet, Sutter is a young alcoholic who, below the surface, realizes that he is sabotaging his future, and Teller does a marvelous job of exploring this side to the endearing protagonist. The serious self-deprecation that follows reuniting with his absent father, who is a vision of Sutter’s own future, is relayed masterfully and leaves the audience in awe of his performance.

4 Saoirse Ronan – Lady Bird (2017)

Star Saoirse Ronan had a number of stellar movies under her belt before Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, with her first Oscar nomination at the age of thirteen only the beginning of an illustrious career. Her range sets her apart from other young actresses in the game, spanning from sci-fi to period drama to raw, coming-of-age movies such as this.

The main character of this tale is anything but meek. Ronan is strong-willed and assured in the role and explores the everyday highs and lows of growing up while cultivating believable onscreen relationships in a way that can place any viewer right alongside her in Sacramento, which feels more like home the longer that you watch her senior year progressing.

3 Greta Gerwig – Frances Ha (2012)

A coming-of-age movie for people who are already of age, Frances Ha chronicles a woman’s journey into adulthood as, while she has technically grown up, it is clear that she’s “not a real person yet”. While most movies of the genre take place in high school, this one takes place in New York as Frances struggles to realize her dream as a dancer, maintain her relationships, and generally get by as a functioning adult.

In another collaboration between Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, the leading lady fits this character like a glove and harnesses the youthful spirit of teenage coming-of-age movies to prove that growing up doesn’t stop when you leave high school. It is an honest depiction of young adult life in that, really, nobody knows what they are doing.

2 Timothée Chalamet – Call Me By Your Name (2017)

In one of his best movies Call Me By Your Name, Timothée Chalamet stars as young Elio in a story of young love in 1980s Italy. He is both charming and bashful, causing the viewer to fall in love with him even faster than Oliver does, and he manages to convey so much heart and recognizable pain that the extent of his acting ability is never in question.

While Chalamet brilliantly inspires empathy for Elio’s confusion and inner turmoil throughout his relationship with Oliver, his final performance during the credits is a masterclass in understated yet powerful acting, as we watch the cycle of Elio’s heartbreak and are left reeling from his final, heart-rending glance directly into the camera.

1 Logan Lerman – The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)

At only 20 years old, Logan Lerman delivers one of the most honest and moving portrayals of adolescence in modern-day cinema. For an actor who has had widely varying roles, such as a heroic demigod and a plucky rancher’s son, an introverted character like Charlie could have been difficult to embody, but Lerman does so with an awe-inspiring grace.

Lerman’s presentations of depression and trauma are never extravagant; his performance is highly effective using mostly subtle speech and action. He beautifully showcases Charlie’s innocence and love for his friends and keeps a powerful persona waiting behind a meek exterior to offer one of the greatest portrayals of a coming-of-age character that cinema has seen.

So I was watching some older episodes of Steven Universe as we prepare for the end of an era. I was watching Mr. Greg and just here are the lyrics in "Don't Cost Nothing" from the episode. The Blue lines are Greg and the Pink ones are Steven.

Bright sunny day don't cost nothing

Light summer breeze don't cost nothing

What do I do with all this money?

When the only thing I want is you

Palling around don't cost nothing

Singing a song don't cost nothing

How do I spend all this money?

I'd rather just spend time with you

You could buy a house and a car

I guess that I can but I've already got a van

I could put you through college

But I'm with the Gems all the time

Or I could buy you all the finest courses online

What if we took a trip?

Do you think?

Yeah I do! We could take a vacation

We could go somewhere new

This may seem random but I feel like in this one song we see both Greg's strength and biggest flaw as a parent. He did a great job teaching Steven the importance of love, relationships and freedom. He gave his son an appreciation for things many people tend to take for granted. He is explicitly showing Steven that money can't buy you happiness. Not saying it, but living it which is a better example for his son then him just saying it. It's Greg practicing what he preaches. He is at least trying to set his son up to be happy. Because Greg values happiness in a way that many people don't. (Also important in the episode right before this one when Steven suggests Sour Cream could become famous without his own father's help Greg tells him Sour Cream getting famous doesn't matter so long as he is doing what makes him happy.) Many, I'd even say most, parents prioritize their version of success over happiness but not Greg. Greg thinks success is a happy life and that's exactly what he wants for himself and for his son.

However while Greg also explicitly brings up the idea of college for Steven, he accepts it when Steven says no as well as the reason Steven says no. Greg barely pushes him with another example of how his son could get an education with the money then just let's it go. While it's true he doesn't actively discourage Steven from going to school, this could hardly be called actively encouraging it either. He is also normalizing the idea that he doesn't have a house and instead lives in his van. If Greg is happy that way then that is good for him. It is not however good for raising a child. And while probably unaware at the time it is telling that Steven's first thought is a house and car. Things he was denied in his childhood due to Greg's lifestyle. While I sincerely doubt the Crewniverse was thinking that far ahead (though it is possible they were) this song makes for a great example of the ways in which Greg messed up as a parent. But it also makes a great example of all the good things Greg did for Steven as a father.

Greg is a good father who happened to make a couple mistakes raising his son which is something I feel it encapsulates in this song.

Iconic things about The Dick Van Dyke Show

-For the time The Dick Van Dyke Show was incredibly diverse. You got to remember this was the early 1960s, back in the day you were lucky to see African Americans in any capacity and when they were in shows or movies they were strictly in the service industry. That started to change in the late 50s to early 60s and TDVDS was kinda the start of that in Television. People of color were depicted in different capacities than usual. In the episode “That’s My Boy??” the actors Greg Morris and Mimi Dillard played a normal upper middle class family. In this episode Rob thinks that Laura and himself were sent home with the wrong baby from the hospital and he believes that their baby was taken by a family with the last name Peters. The Peters ended up being African American and they were depicted as well dressed and well spoken people who seemed to live in a similar area and walk of life as the Petries and in that episode the black couple is funny and completely sane whereas the white man (Rob) is depicted as the butt of the joke. Also at the end of the episode Rob subtly mentions how their son Richie is getting horrible grades and the Peters’ son is at the top of the class. It’s small things like that, that had never been seen on Television. In a episode named “The Man from My Uncle“ an actor by the name of Godfrey Campbell played an FBI agent. And that’s not counting the numerous POC in smaller roles or as extras in scenes. This was a time where you were lucky to see POC even as extras. -The feminism in TDVDS took amazing strides as well. There were times where Rob is shown to be very insecure, and I think that’s some of the most of it’s time aspects of the show. It’s not great, but it’s realistic. One of my favorite character choices for Laura Petrie is that we find out that she is proficient in self defense.... she learned self defense techniques when she was an entertainer for the troops. In the episode “My Mother Can Beat Up My Father,” a drunk at a bar harasses Laura and Rob tries to defend her and he gets laid out by the drunk. Laura then does a judo throw on the guy and lays him out. It becomes a big thing for Rob in that episode and he’s very insecure about the fact that Laura can take a guy that Rob can’t. But Laura does not apologize for that fact, and in one scene Rob is trying to prove that he’s all tough and so he challenges Laura to do the same throw with him. Laura doesn’t pretend she can’t do it to spare his fragile masculinity, she lays him out and if I remember correctly he broke a few bones. Also the character of Sally Rogers has been touted as one of the first women’s lib characters. She’s a Television writer alongside Rob and Buddy and she is treated with respect and is presumably paid the same as Buddy who is a writer on her same level. She is a proud career woman who is damn good at her job, and is an equal to the men in her workplace. Another big way that TDVDS broke ground was the fact that Laura wears capri pants. Believe it or not that caused a firestorm of controversy.... up to that point housewives had been shown as wearing dresses and skirts on TV and once the dust settled the fact that Mary Tyler Moore wore capri pants on TDVDS caused those pants to become a huge fashion craze in the 60s. -TDVDS became a huge hit starting with the second season against all odds. First off Carl Reiner had created the show a couple years prior and had actually shot a pilot with an entirely different cast and with himself in the lead, at that time it was called “Head Of The Family.” It aired and did not get picked up. Carl just gave up on it and it lay on a shelf collecting dust. A couple years later someone with the William Morris Agency tried to get Carl to retry it and he refused. That agent then went to the most successful producer at that time, Sheldon Leonard. Sheldon was known for having a perfect record for his pilots, absolutely all of them had been picked up to series, some of which were huge hit shows. Sheldon saw the show and immediately saw the potential. He approached Carl about the idea of retrying with an entirely different cast and name.... once a famous producer says they have faith in your show, how can you say no. So they set to the task of finding a cast. Dick Van Dyke was one of the first people to be cast in the show, and at that point Dick was in the middle of a successful run on Broadway in the show “Bye Bye Birdie” which he’d won a Tony Award for, but being successful on Broadway doesn’t usually translate to fame with the general public (up until Lin Manuel Miranda that was true). So not only did they cast an unknown in the lead role but they then turned around and named the show on the said unknown actor. That was an extremely ballsy and risky move. At the time there were a lot of shows named after actors but they were all famous stars like Doris Day etc. To name a show after an unknown actor was unheard of!! They then cast Mary Tyler Moore (who was an unknown), they cast Rose Marie (who was never hugely famous, but had a really good career on radio and in night clubs. But even if you consider her to have been famous, she was kind of a has been), Morey Amsterdam was cast (an unknown), Jerry Paris and Ann Morgan Guilbert were cast (also unknowns). It was really a cast full of unknowns in the leads. There were no big names. Which was really a disadvantage going in. The first season bombed, it was near the end of the Nielsen ratings and morale was severely low at the end of the season. Sheldon Leonard actually got word from a friend who was on the committee that decided which shows were cancelled and which her renewed, that the show had indeed been cancelled and it just hadn’t been announced yet. So Sheldon went into problem solving mode. He knew that going to the network wouldn’t get him anywhere. At that time sponsors were king and TDVDS had one of the biggest sponsors in the game, Proctor And Gamble. So Sheldon flew to Proctor And Gamble’s headquarters and in his own words he “sang mammy” in other words he begged and he charmed their pants off (figuratively) :) At the end of his pitch, they agreed to go to bat for the show... on one condition.... that he found a sponsor to sponsor the second half of the season. So he raced from sponsor to sponsor pitching his show and begging them to co sponsor them. He was in the middle of a pitch when he was alerted that Kent Cigarettes had decided to sponsor their second half. Proctor And Gamble and Kent Cigarettes went up against CBS and demanded that they renew TDVDS or else they would withdraw support from all their other popular shows. And CBS caved and renewed the show. With S2, TDVDS became a massive success and by the end of S5 the network was begging Carl Reiner to make another season but Carl wanted to end the show while they were still on top. TDVDS also became the darling of the awards shows. They continually swept the Emmys every year starting with S2. They won for writing, directing, and acting, it also won Best Comedy in 1966 with it’s final season.

-The scripts were largely based off of real life. Nowadays it’s more common for shows to take ideas from real life, but at the time Carl Reiner’s wish for authenticity was largely unheard of. Writers on the show described the writing sessions as therapy sessions because it would start with Carl probing into their life and them talking about embarrassing things that happened to them. Carl and the writers would take those ideas and make them bigger and crazier but there was always that nugget of truth in there.

-The marriage between Rob and Laura was also iconic. You gotta figure that I Love Lucy was a huge show of the past decade and it really shaped most future shows. In some ways TDVDS was the antithesis of that. Carl wanted to create a show where the main married couple was united... it was them against the world. He shied away from battle of the sexes storylines whenever possible. He wanted Rob and Laura to be clearly in love. And it’s a unique relationship where you can tell that those two have an active sex life... and that was really unique for the time.

-Carl Reiner made a decision at the beginning of the show that he would never use popular slang terms of the 60s. In fact if you watch beginning to end, only one slang term slipped in, in S5. Otherwise, he remarkably kept to that. Because of that crucial decision, TDVDS is not as dated as it could be and it has a very timeless feel to it.

-The cast was known to get along famously, there were only a few moments of tension, otherwise the set was known to be very light and there was little tension. They were all pranksters and the set was alive with hilarity, laughter, and pranks. They used to haze guest stars... most of the guest stars were fine with being hazed but there was one who did not take it so well. During the filming of one episode Robert Vaughn was the guest star and he was on the outskirts of the set waiting for his cue to come in. The actors led the entire cast and crew off the set and turned off the lights and left Robert waiting for his cue for about an hour, until he walked in to see what the holdup was only to find the entire cast and crew gone. It’s hilarious, but he wasn’t too happy. The cast was like a huge family, but most guest stars described them as being very welcoming as well.

Edit. Another iconic thing I almost forgot is the fact that certain episodes are used in film classes as examples of how to write comedy. It’s so funny and iconic that it is the textbook case of how to write comedy shows!!!! When will your favorite show ever... ;)

This December, FOX takes TV's #1 show and adds a little twist. Based on the smash hit FOX series THE MASKED SINGER and inspired by a popular segment featured on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," all-new celebrity competition series THE MASKED DANCER will have a special premiere Sunday, Dec. 27 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/5:00-6:00 PM PT, Live to all Time Zones), before having its time period premiere Wednesday, Jan. 6 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). All too often, modern science fiction movies seem to be very similar, at least superficially – spectacularly beautiful effects at the service of deadly downbeat, and honestly often rather dull, stories.

Take Ad Astra. Please.

It is gorgeously mounted, but it is cold and passionless, and has way too many sections that move at a glacial pace. Even the supposed action scenes feel distant and distracted. (And occasionally outright ridiculous – killer space baboons? Really???)

Not only is the hero – an astronaut played by Brad Pitt – completely deadened and cut off from everything going on around him, there is only one character in the whole film who connects as a real, vital human being, someone who has passion and spark. That character, an older military man played by Donald Sutherland, is written out of the action in the first 20 minutes or so.

Ad Astra is simply amazing looking, but it’s eventually an empty spectacle, a triumph of style over substance. It wants you to believe that it is oh so deep and vitally important, but essentially, it’s just another story of a man trying to deal with the large shadow of his overbearing father.

Just because it takes place in space doesn’t make the idea any fresher.

It wants to be an Oedipal variation on Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (which was the inspiration for Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now), but it falls far short of the Conrad novella and Oedipus Rex, for that matter.

Pitt’s Roy McBride has been dealing with all his life with the ghost of his famous astronaut father Clifford (Tommy Lee Jones). 27 years after dad disappeared during a mission to Neptune gone horribly wrong, Roy is told that there is reason to believe that dad is still alive. They want to use the son to lure the dad to return to civilization, which seems like a flawed plan since they had been estranged even before dad became a missing person.

Even though dad has been gone from his life for over a generation, Roy is still a throbbing open wound when it comes to his relationship with his father, who was mean and abusive. Roy has become the best astronaut he can be because he must live up to his father’s legacy – and also the least feeling astronaut he can be. He is known in the space program for never letting his pulse rate go above 80 – which is a good skill in an emergency, but not so good in life in general.

Roy has driven his wife (played by Liv Tyler) away, despite the fact (or perhaps because of the fact) that she was the one thing in the world that could raise any feelings in the guy.

However, when he takes on the new mission, Roy starts to lose his shit. All these years later, his dad has such a large sway over him that even the possibility that he is alive makes Roy become unmoored. He starts the long trip to a space station to try to contact his father, experiencing space adventures that are sometimes exciting, sometimes stupid. (Again…, killer space baboons!). Also, honestly, people fighting in zero gravity are kind of ridiculous looking. And it happens more than once in Ad Astra.

It all moves slowly through space and time, to the point that the audience is squirming in their seats. By the time you hit the almost inevitable possibility of a father and son reunion, the film had pretty much lost most of us.

As I said before, most of the characters of Ad Astra appear to be emotionally deadened, like they are all on full body Novocain. Sadly, so does the movie.

Jake Paul Promised Them Fame. Was It Worth the Price? In the vast world of YouTube villains, there may be none as famous as Jake Paul. The 24-year-old Vine star turned vlogger has polarized viewers with videos of dangerous pranks and stunts (though he continues to bring in millions of views). He is a serial entrepreneur linked to several dubious and misleading business ventures (though that hasn’t deterred investors). He has repeatedly offended and alienated his collaborators (though he keeps finding new ones). In 2020, he declared the coronavirus a “hoax.” It can often seem that he lives to provoke outrage. Now, Mr. Paul is facing allegations of sexual misconduct from other influencers. Yet he remains the blueprint for many social media stars today. Without him, it’s hard to imagine the current land rush of so-called “collab houses,” where young content creators film videos, throw parties and spur drama. Or the proliferation of prank videos on YouTube. Or the bad-boy archetype embodied by so many influencer-entrepreneurs born on TikTok. At the center of these comparisons is the Team 10 house, an influencer collective and talent management agency founded by Mr. Paul in 2016. The vision: He and six other creators, aged 14 to 19, would live together and leverage their collective followings for views and cash. Everyone would benefit, but no one more than Mr. Paul. “I know it’s a cliché, but, like, literally, I want to create an empire of dozens of talent under me, to take my power and multiply it so that I become bigger than myself,” Mr. Paul told The New York Times in 2017. Back then, the arrangement was uncommon; sure, influencers lived together (the O2L house and The Station had already come and gone), but the houses weren’t all businesses in their own right. Now, such setups are increasingly common — and highly lucrative. “People look to Team 10 house as the inspiration for collab houses today,” said Brendan Gahan, the chief social officer at Mekanism, an advertising agency. “The Beatles didn’t invent rock ’n’ roll, but they’re the most famous rock ’n’ roll band. Team 10 didn’t invent the collab house, but they became the most famous collab house and really defined it. They created the culture.” But that culture is now being re-evaluated, as stories mount from creators who say they were exploited for views. No Rent, No Parents … No Problems? When AJ Mitchell received a direct message from Jake Paul in early 2016 about an opportunity in Los Angeles, he was intrigued. An aspiring musician in small-town Illinois, Mr. Mitchell had earned more than 80,000 followers on Instagram. Mr. Paul, who was raising capital to start a media company focused on influencers, said he could help him become much bigger. Aaron Mitchell, AJ’s father, said he “was not very impressed with Jake” and that he didn’t want his son, who was 14 at the time, involved with Team 10. However, after extensive conversations with Mr. Paul’s parents, Greg Paul and Pam Stepnick; Mr. Paul’s assistant, Erica Costell, who was in her mid-20s; and Neels Visser, another member of Team 10, he and his wife, Allison, decided to allow AJ to join the group. The arrangement worked like this: Each of the influencers could live in the Team 10 house (a rented mansion in the upscale Beverly Grove neighborhood of Los Angeles) for free if they agreed to produce regular content for social media (which Mr. Paul would monetize) and participate in brand deals. (Mr. Paul declined to comment on the financial arrangement he had with house residents.) According to several former house members, Mr. Paul could also take 10 to 20 percent of Team 10 members’ YouTube ad revenue for up to five years, even if they left the group. At the time, it sounded like a good deal; Mr. Paul would help them become stars in their own right. On May 24, 2016, Mr. Mitchell arrived at the Team 10 house with a single suitcase. For several weeks he didn’t have a bedroom, so he slept on a leather couch in the living room. Mr. Mitchell was given a room to share with Alissa Violet, who was 19 at the time and publicly dating Mr. Paul. “It kind of felt unreal,” Mr. Mitchell, who is now 19, said. “I’d seen those people on social media before, growing up. I’d see all these funny videos so when I went out there I was like, ‘Whoa, this is real.’ It was like I was living in a dream.” Ms. Mitchell, AJ’s mother, would regularly fly in and stay at a nearby hotel. On some occasions, she even spent the night at the Team 10 house, sleeping in the room her son shared with Ms. Violet. “For me, as a mom, I’m very protective of my kid,” Ms. Mitchell said. She said that when she called older members of the group to check on her son, they assured her that things were going well; AJ, she said, never let on otherwise. “All I know is they were doing a bunch of silly stupid videos, being kids,” Ms. Mitchell said. “Sometimes being reckless, but doing silly videos.” The Prank Economy To get views, many YouTubers, including Mr. Paul and David Dobrik’s Vlog Squad, relied on pranks and practical jokes, drawing from a lineage of entertainment franchises like “Jackass” and “Punk’d” as well as the work of creators like Mr. Paul’s older brother, Logan. The people living and working in the Team 10 house served as subjects for all kinds of antics. Mr. Paul’s YouTube channel offers an incomplete record — many of his videos have been removed — but it includes footage of members of Team 10 being electrically shocked without warning and facing pressure to jump from the mansion’s roof into a pool. The videos give the impression of a rollicking frat house during rush season rather than a collaborative work environment. Former Team 10 members told The Times that Mr. Paul once chain-sawed through a bedroom door to wake up two people in the house. One of Mr. Paul’s former assistants recalled arriving for work to find her desk had been smashed for a video. The Times sought comment from Mr. Paul on the material of the YouTube videos and the accounts of former Team 10 associates, and he declined. It wasn’t just people in the house who were affected by Mr. Paul’s pranks: In 2017, a man sued Mr. Paul for hearing loss after the influencer blared a car horn at him; the case was later dismissed. “When it comes down to someone having to do something to get attention, every single day you have to do crazy stuff,” Mr. Mitchell said. “If you go back and look at those videos, you see a lot of crazy stuff and you’ll see why kids are drawn into it, because it was a house full of kids doing whatever they want. Every day it was a new crazy thing, but people wanted to watch it.” In his downtime, Mr. Mitchell would write songs in a notebook and play them on his keyboard. One day, he came home to discover his keyboard broken. Mr. Paul told him it had been thrown in the pool for a video. ‘He Was the Boss’ Followers were the primary currency of the Team 10 house. “If you got tagged in one of Jake’s YouTube videos, you could get 50,000 followers,” Mr. Mitchell said. “Jake would use that to manipulate everyone. If anyone didn’t do what Jake wanted, he’d tell everyone else in the house not to tag them. Jake had a monopoly, and he decided who got famous.” But there was money coming in, too, and members of the group had questions about where it was going. When Team 10 formed, Mr. Paul set up and controlled a business email accounts for each member to solicit opportunities. Mr. Mitchell said he was not aware of the opportunities that he was being pitched for or what was coming in. In the 14 months he spent as part of the group, he said he was paid directly for two brand deals but never received payment from Team 10. Mr. Mitchell relied on small amounts of money he received from his parents to cover expenses like meals out with the group. Mr. Paul had convinced Mr. Mitchell’s parents that their son would be taken care of, but no meals or structure were provided for him or the other teenage residents. Most of them had never been expected to shop or cook for themselves, and didn’t have the means to do so. “People see these mansions and they see people living like royalty, but no one knew I was sleeping on the floor or I didn’t have food,” said Mr. Mitchell. Veena Dubal, a professor of law at the University of California, Hastings, said: “We have all these laws in place that have been around for a century to protect child performers, but they have not been extended to safeguard the health, welfare and safety of children influencers.” Because these young creators make money through a variety of revenue streams, and are not employed by a single entity, they can be vulnerable to exploitation. “If there’s not some entity taking responsibility as an employer, then we’re going to see the kind of exploitative and unsafe practices that we have been seeing,” she said. The allure of living independently and building a following had worn off. “At first I was like there’s no parents here and we get to be free and do what we want,” Mr. Mitchell said. “I felt, like, free in a way. But having Jake be the adult was weird because we all listened to Jake. He was the boss.” During parties, marijuana and alcohol were available in the Team 10 house. Mr. Mitchell said he once drank so much that he blacked out. The group often attended parties where guests in their 20s and 30s would mingle with teenagers. Mr. Mitchell said he began a sexual relationship with a woman nearly a decade older than him whom he had met at an influencer party. He understands now that the relationship could not have been consensual given his age. “I was a baby. I had a baby face,” he said. “I feel like that’s just weird now.” Behind the Scenes By late 2016, Mr. Mitchell had left the Team 10 house, though he remained part of the group for several months after. His mother, who was staying at a hotel nearby, had found out about a party at the house and drove over to pick up her son. It wasn’t until recently that Mr. Mitchell told his parents the full extent of what took place in the house. Ms. Mitchell said she is horrified and angry. “I’ll tell you right now, had I known anything about any relationship with a girl 10 years older than him I would have had the law involved,” she said. Several months after Mr. Mitchell’s departure, the rest of Team 10 was forced to move; neighbors said Mr. Paul had created “living hell” for them and turned their sleepy neighborhood into “war zone.” The following year, Ivan and Emilio Martinez, two YouTubers from Spain who had lived in the Team 10 house, spoke about their decision to leave. In a YouTube video, they said Mr. Paul bullied them, terrorized them with pranks and made racist comments mocking their background and language skills. (The two speak English as a second language.) In a 2018 interview with the YouTuber Shane Dawson, Ms. Violet described what it was like to date and work with Mr. Paul. “He’s not a physical abuser, but mentally and emotionally, 100 percent, every day, 2,000 times a day,” she says in the video. “I can’t even remember a conversation where it was me walking away feeling good about myself.” “If we filmed a video, and he had to push me into a bush, normally, you’d nudge someone or pretend to push someone. He would actually shove me,” she says, as she shows scars to the camera. “He would just do it way too hard.” In a YouTube video posted on April 9, Justine Paradise, a 24-year-old TikTok influencer, accused Mr. Paul of sexual assault. The incident, she said, involved forced oral sex and took place at the Team 10 house in 2019. “In a situation like that, there was nothing I could do,” Ms. Paradise said. “I was physically restricted, and I felt emotionally restricted afterwards to even say anything about it.” Three friends whom she told directly afterward about the incident corroborated her account. Ms. Paradise said she plans to file charges. In a public statement posted to Twitter, Mr. Paul denied Ms. Paradise’s allegations, calling them “100% false.” Mr. Paul’s lawyer Daniel E. Gardenswartz, said in a statement to The New York Times: “Our client categorically denies the allegation.” Railey Lollie, 21, a model and actress who began working with Mr. Paul when she was 17, said he often called her “jailbait” and commented on her appearance. She said that one evening in late 2017, after filming a video, Mr. Paul groped her. She forcefully told him to stop, and he ran out of the room. Ms. Lollie quit shortly after the incident. “I was with Jake for months, and I saw what kind of person he was behind the scenes and what kind of person he put out to the rest of the world,” she said. Meanwhile, in Businessland In the business and entertainment worlds, the name Jake Paul continues to have cachet. In March, Mr. Paul announced he was starting a new venture fund; already, powerful figures in Silicon Valley have agreed to contribute to the fund. “These older investors come in who have no idea about social media and they see he’s got a lot of followers. From their perspective, it’s success,” Mr. Mitchell said. “The real story is, Jake should not be getting any money from investors from the things he’s done in the past.” Mr. Paul, who was an athlete in high school, began a boxing career in 2020. “It brought back the competitive, athletic Jake Paul,” he told Rolling Stone recently. Fighting has helped Mr. Paul expand his audience. It has also made him richer: In an interview with ESPN last year, Mr. Paul said he earned “eight figures” for a fight against Nate Robinson, a former N.B.A. star. For his most recent fight, against Ben Askren, a former mixed martial arts champion, Mr. Paul’s disclosed pay was $690,000. (After the fight, Mr. Paul wrote in an Instagram post that the fight had drawn 1.5 million pay-per-view customers.) If you could change (or rather fix) the background and/or paternity of any five characters, who would they be?

Sam McCall - While I liked early Julexis, what the writers did to them pissed me off and turned me off of the couple. Sam understandably kicked Julian out of her life, but has nothing to do with the rest of her Jerome relatives? I liked her scenes with Ava when she was sick with toxoplasmosis. She and Kiki interacted a lot and got along well when Sam dated Kiki’s dad Silas, but they don’t acknowledge the fact that they are cousins. She doesn’t interact with Lucas or even babysit her baby brother Leo. What was the purpose of making Julian Sam’s dad?

Franco - I hate this character for many reasons and the only time I liked him (as played by Roger Howarth) was when he and Nina were together pre-baby issue. James Franco’s Franco was a fun psycho villain. I hate all of his paternity rewrites. First, he was Betsy Frank’s son. Nope, he is Jason’s fraternal twin via Alan and Susan Moore. Wrong, he is Heather Webber’s son by Scott, despite not looking like either one. I like Roger Howarth, but he is miscast in this role. I would rather Franco be Betsy Frank’s with the probably abusive creep Jim Harvey (who he resembles) rather than tarnish the Baldwins (Scott, Karen, Serena, Gail and Lee), even by association.

Nelle - There is so much wrong with this character. If they were going to connect her to Carly, she should have been a Spencer relative, capitalizing on the fact that she previously played a younger version of Luke and Bobbie’s sister Pat, and not a Benson. While in her early days, I liked that she was like a young Carly set on revenge. They could have made her Carly’s daughter somehow, either from pre-Port Charles days in Florida (possibly from sleeping with Reese’s dad) or a previously unknown twin of Michael’s. That way we wouldn’t have had to suffer through the train wreck that was Melle. Or if they wanted her to be an original character, why not utilize the chemistry she had with Nina and reveal that she was Nina and Silas’ baby that was supposedly miscarried after what Madeline did?

Avery - Like many of you, I wish Avery was Morgan’s daughter. It wouldn’t change much of her story. Carly would definitely try and rig the paternity test. Maybe we wouldn’t have suffered through more MorKiki and Ava wouldn’t have been indirectly responsible for Morgan’s death.

Griffin - I would make him Anna’s son with Duke, the child she supposedly miscarried when Olivia Jerome pushed her in the elevator. In one of Olivia’s last scenes, she made an ominous remark about Griffin’s mother. It would be amazing if she knew that Griffin was Anna’s and kept that secret out of revenge against the woman who “stole” Duke from her. Plus, he is basically Anna’s son already with how protective and caring she is for him because he is Duke’s son. Also, Robin and Emma already see him as a brother/uncle-like figure. If Josh Madden, Erica Kane’s famous abortion, could be transplanted into her doctor’s wife as an embryo, why not the same treatment (in a good way) for Anna and Griffin?

****BONUS**** If we are stuck with Anna having a child with Faison, I would rather it not be the obvious path - Valentin lied about it being a girl and it will be Henrik/Peter August, who we know is Faison’s son and cohorts with Valentin. I don’t mind Peter being Faison’s son and in league with Valentin, because we all knew the boy was shady af. However, I would prefer if Anna did have another daughter and it was revealed to be Dr. Kim Nero. She looks a lot like Anna. It would give Tamara more story to work with and more avenues to take the character of Kim in. Kim and Oscar would have more family (Henrik/Peter, Britt, Maxie’s baby, Robin, Emma, baby Noah, Alex Devane Marick, Gabriel Devane, Aidan Devane).

What five storylines would you rewrite? And how?

Sam’s paternity/Port Charles re-visited - As I previously mentioned, I would change Sam’s paternity since she doesn’t utilize her Jerome heritage. I would have made her Ryan Chamberlain’s daughter. Ryan is Kevin’s dead psycho twin brother. Ryan would still fit in with Alexis’ bad boy dating profile and it would make since that she would be a dead ringer for Livvie Locke. I also would have kept Kevin as Livvie’s father since it was a disservice to Port Charles and its fans to rewrite such a story. I would have kept the nods to Port Charles but they could have left out the supernatural elements, which were only brought into the later seasons of the show. Port Charles did start out as a show about young doctors (including Scott’s daughter Karen Wexler) and nurses working at General Hospital, when the main soap went to more mob-related stories. There were a lot of crossovers to begin with. Also, there would be mention of Scott and Lucy’s adopted daughter Christina.

Nikolas’ storylines 2014-2016. I’m not sure how I would write it, but Nikolas wouldn’t take over ELQ, be involved involved in “Jake Doe”/Drew/Jason drama, try to blackmail or kill Hayden, fake his death, or be killed by Valentin for Cassadine holdings. I don’t mind Nik getting some dark Cassadine on, but don’t destroy his character like these years did.

Port Charles Mayoral Campaign of 2018. I would have kept Laura as the anti-Charles Street development candidate (screw you, Frank!). Olivia would have been in-character and struggling between supporting her husband Ned and fighting for the down-to-earth people living on Charles Street who are a lot like her Bensonhurst neighbors. Laura would win, despite the dirty tricks pulled by Jim Harvey. Ned would run a clean campaign. Julian would run his bar and have little to do with the story. Alexis would assist with Laura’s campaign, but otherwise stay out of politics and Charlie’s Pub.

There would be no Friz relationship. Elizabeth would have dated Griffin instead (sorry, Grava).

Sonny wouldn’t have killed AJ. While I enjoyed the distance between Michael and Sonny (as well as Carly) because of Sonny’s actions, it didn’t last long enough. Sonny escaped the consequences yet again. Also, there would be no Ava/Sonny sex on AJ’s grave, which would mean that Avery would have to be Morgan’s. Michael would still have good relationships with all of his parents. We would get to see AJ’s reactions to “Jake Doe” being “Jason” before finally revealed to be Jason’s twin Drew, as well as the real Jason being alive. I would need all of Alan’s sons to reconcile their feelings toward each other. AJ would be an attentive uncle to Jake, Danny, and Scout.

Three most annoying retcons in General Hospital history?

Franco’s crimes are a result of a brain tumor. Such bullshit.

Anna willingly sleeping with Faison when she is a WSB trainee to get info and having his child, who is probably Henrik/Peter. I may not have been alive when Robert, Anna, and Robin first came on in the 80s, but many fans have said that a flashback showed that Anna was a virgin when she first slept with Robert. Writers, stop screwing with GH history.

Ignoring Sam’s relationships with Silas and Patrick in favor building up her relationship with Drew. While I did like Siam, I did feel they were a rebound. But Samtrick was a real relationship and it was going very well until Carly outed “Jake Doe” as “Jason”. Sam was still her investigative, risk-taking self and a mom back then, compared to whoever she is now. Yes, I feel like she would have went back to Jason and Patrick to Robin, in the end.

Superman & Lois: Behind the Scenes of The New DC TV Show

When you think of Superman, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it the cape? The tights? The ability to “leap tall buildings in a single bound?” Whatever Superman’s most recognizable trait, it’s probably the way the character makes you feel that stays with you. The premise that someone so powerful would choose to use that power solely for good is an optimistic one. Despite being one of the most powerful figures in the DC Universe, it’s Superman’s capacity to inspire hope that is his defining characteristic.

“Part of why I find the character of Superman appealing as a fan, let alone as a part of the show, is that he has the power to destroy the world and he doesn’t,” Elizabeth Tulloch, who plays Lois Lane on Superman & Lois, says. “He’s doing the right thing because it’s the right thing. If he wasn’t Superman and he was just Clark Kent without the powers, he would be the same man. In other words, you don’t [need] powers to be good, decent, and kind.”

Lois Lane is an equally inspirational figure. What could be more hopeful than someone believing, often in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary, that all the world needs to make the right decision is to hear the truth? As one of fiction’s most famous journalists, Lois uses a different kind of power from her husband’s to make the world a better, more just place.

Let’s face it, these days, we’re all in need of a little hope. So why not spotlight the two heroes who have been fighting the hopeful fight for over 80 years? Superman & Lois, the newest iteration of these legendary characters which premieres on The CW on Feb. 23, aims to do just that, albeit with some refreshing twists. The days of our heroes competing with each other for scoops while Clark awkwardly hides his true identity from Lois are gone, replaced with a happily married pair with no secrets between them. To switch things up a little further, the two are raising twin teenage boys not in big city Metropolis but in Clark’s hometown of Smallville.

It may sound like a radical interpretation (at least by the generally change-averse standard of most Superman tales), but Superman & Lois still has sci-fi and action to spare, even as it shows us a new side of the Man of Steel. It comes as the latest entry in the network’s ever-expanding roster of DC superhero TV shows, which began in 2012 with Arrow and has grown to encompass The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman, Stargirl, and more.

It was this shared universe that brought us TV’s newest Superman, Tyler Hoechlin, who first wore the cape in 2016 as a guest star on Supergirl. Despite the fanfare surrounding his arrival there was no Superman spinoff in the works at the time, and this was intended as a one-off appearance for the character.

“Honestly, I was at a point in my life and my career where I didn’t want to commit to something that was a full-time thing on a show,” Hoechlin recalls via Zoom during a break from filming. “I had just left [Teen Wolf] and was enjoying the opportunity to try different things and move around a little bit. So it felt perfect. [Filming] was going to be a couple of weeks up in Vancouver. I could check the list and say I got to play a superhero– and Superman at that.”

But Hoechlin, who had previously auditioned for the role on the big screen for 2013’s Man of Steel, found himself drawn to the way the hero was being presented for TV.

“I liked what Supergirl was representing at the time and what it has continued to represent,” Hoechlin says. “I really loved that the show was just shamelessly optimistic and hopeful. I was happy to do something that was just very, very bold about it.”

That “optimistic and hopeful” quality is apparent in Hoechlin’s performance from the first moments of that initial Supergirl guest appearance. Incredibly powerful and yet so unfailingly polite that he takes the time to offer a wink and a smile to people he saves on the street, this Superman connected with fans tiring of the conflicted, brooding takes which characterized so many of the character’s recent adventures. When the decision was made to bring Superman back for the following year’s Elseworlds crossover event, it was important to match Clark with the character who has shared nearly all his adventures since 1938.

“They were reading a lot of other actresses I recognized,” Tulloch recalls of her 2018 Lois Lane audition. “I kind of had a feeling, after I did it once, that I totally was doing something different from the other actors. The choice I made was just to have fun with it. I think, based on some of the feedback I got in the room, a lot of women had been reading that scene more seriously because, on paper, the scene did read as serious.”

The audition reading in question was a deleted scene from 1980’s Superman II, in which Lois, determined to prove that she knows Clark’s secret identity, pulls a gun on him and fires. A horrified Clark reprimands her, only for Lois to reveal that the round was blank. But by then it’s too late: he’s already confessed to being Superman.

“I just sort of played it joyfully,” Tulloch says. “And at the end, when he doesn’t die, I squealed happily and said, ‘I knew it.’” Tulloch recalls a note from Supergirl co-showrunner Jessica Queller: “She was like, ‘This is what we were looking for… there needs to be a joie de vivre about Lois.’”

Lois Lane is as crucial to DC history as Superman, first appearing in what is generally considered ground zero for the entire superhero genre: 1938’s Action Comics #1. The book introduced both Superman and Lois to the world and, over the ensuing decades, Lois has risen from supporting character to co-headliner, and with good reason. Tougher than a Metropolis winter, sharp-witted, and a better journalist than her superpowered co-worker, Lois showcases the human spirit at its best, no powers required. Tulloch embodies the character as confidently as Hoechlin does Clark/Superman.

“I can’t think of a more important time in recent history to be playing a journalist,” Tulloch says. “After the last few years, where I feel like journalists and members of the media have come under a pretty constant onslaught and had their roles diminished, I think it’s really important to be doing what she’s doing, using her words to fight on behalf of other people, and to fight for truth and justice.”

Just like Hoechlin’s Superman, Tulloch’s Lois was an immediate hit with fans. It helps that the pair share an effortless onscreen chemistry. Without the Clark/Superman/Lois faux-love triangle that characterized so many previous versions of the legend, TV’s new Lois and Clark were free to focus on fresher elements of the relationship. Amazingly, this rapport came naturally, as the tight shooting schedules of the Elseworlds crossover meant the first time the pair were in character together was right before filming.

“Our first readings were on set,” Hoechlin says. “We didn’t get to do any of the readings together beforehand. I immediately thought she was perfect for the part. That feeling has only grown.”

“We really just have so much fun,” Tulloch says. “I think that’s part of why I hope people respond to us. Obviously there’s a level of gravitas to these roles, and what they’re doing in their roles in the world is really important, but they’re also really playful and they really like each other.”

By the time the characters were brought back for another DC TV guest appearance in 2019, things had changed. Lois had given birth to their first child, the infant Jonathan Kent. They were there for the multiverse-shattering Crisis on Infinite Earths, which changed elements of reality for all the DC superhero shows, including a major status quo shift for Clark and Lois: instead of raising a single infant son, they now have twin teenage boys.

The responsibility of shaping Superman & Lois fell to writer and executive producer Todd Helbing, who served as showrunner on the fifth season of The Flash. Yet, it was a task that gave him pause when the job was first presented to him by DC TV maestro Greg Berlanti.

“These shows are ginormous,” Helbing says. “The hours alone, it’s just a daunting task. And nobody wants to mess up Superman.”

It was here that the family dynamic of Superman & Lois began to take shape. “Crisis gave us a blank slate in a lot of ways,” Helbing says, and with that came freedom. Only child Jonathan gave way to the idea of a son and a daughter, before finally settling on two very different twin sons: the athletic and confident Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) and the anxious and introverted Jordan (Alexander Garfin).

“I have two boys who are wildly different, so that became part of the storytelling,” Helbing says. “What do you do as parents when one child is completely different from the other and needs different attention and different help? The brothers’ relationship changes the family dynamic. And as working parents, how do you juggle your lives? Just thinking about Lois Lane being the most famous journalist in the world and the demands that her job has coupled with the demands that Superman would have, how do you infuse the storytelling with all of those challenges?”

Those challenges include the fact that, as the show opens, the boys don’t know their father is the world’s most powerful superhero, which means Clark occasionally misses out on fatherly activities without an honest excuse, an understandable point of friction.

“Superman is a difficult person to dramatize because he’s perfect in a lot of ways,” Helbing says. “The analogy we always use is Superman is sort of perfect, but Clark can be clumsy as a dad. I think being clumsy as a parent, that’s something that we all are. We’re all figuring it out. There are a lot of books written about it, but the second it happens to you, you don’t know what you’re doing. So why would that be any different for the Man of Steel? In a lot of ways, that opened up the floodgates about really telling stories where people can relate to him in a way that they haven’t been able to before.”

In other words, just because Lois and Clark are icons, pillars of an entire genre of storytelling, and two of the most famous characters in all of fiction, it doesn’t mean parenting comes easily to them.

“I think there’s a little element of guilt on both of their parts because they’re such busy people, with Clark moonlighting as Superman, and Lois being this very famous, hardworking journalist,” Tulloch says.

The idea of Lois and Clark as parents isn’t new to fans of the comics, where young Jonathan has been a fixture for years, but it isn’t as well known as other facets of the Superman legend. This makes Hoechlin and Tulloch the first actors to bring this element of the characters to a mainstream audience.

“For me, it was an exciting opportunity to tell a part of the story that hasn’t been told before,” Hoechlin says. “In a way, it raises the stakes significantly… the only real threat to him is threatening the people that he cares about. Of course, he’s had that relationship with Lois, but now he’s also got two kids, so that threat becomes all the more real.”

Fans who grew up with Superman and now have families of their own may see the character in a new light. “I think for parents to be able to come back and reconnect with this character who was a hero of theirs as a kid going through the same things that they’re now going through is such a cool opportunity, as well,” says Hoechlin.

Creating a realistic family dynamic meant finding actors to play the Kent sons who felt natural with their onscreen parents. Tulloch did readings with a series of young actors to make sure the parental chemistry was there.

“You honestly could tell almost immediately that they were the right fits,” Tulloch says. “Alex Garfin, who plays Jordan, has a lot of emotional stuff. He was just really excellent. Jordan Elsass, who plays Jonathan, is the same. His role is really different since Jonathan’s a bit cockier. If anything, his character’s Achilles’ heel is that he thinks too highly of himself. But both of those boys were just awesome.”

Events in the first episode lead the family to leave Metropolis for Clark’s old hometown of Smallville, which isn’t quite the idyllic small town it’s sometimes portrayed as. But the rural setting doesn’t mean that there will be less superheroic action than you’ve come to expect from a big city-based hero.

“The way we approached it was, if Flash is the guardian of Central City and Supergirl is the guardian of National City, Superman is the guardian of the world,” Helbing says. “So it really doesn’t matter where Superman’s based. He can fly anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds. Once you understand that, it really doesn’t matter where his home turf is… it could be anywhere.”

Bringing the family back to Smallville means that Hoechlin has an opportunity to explore more facets of the character. There’s a long-running debate among Superman fans and creators about which of Superman’s identities is the “real” persona. Is he really Clark Kent, and Superman is a put-on for the world? Or does Superman represent his true nature, and it’s Clark Kent who’s an act? To hear Hoechlin tell it, it’s far more complicated than that.

“There is Superman at the most extreme, when no one knows him as anything other than [a hero],” Hoechlin says of his approach to the character. “There’s Superman when he’s around people who are aware that he’s more than just Superman. There’s the Clark that everyone knows is Superman, but he’s still kind of ‘playing Clark.’ There’s also the extreme Clark where you would only ever think that he’s the clumsy guy in the office and that’s all he is.”

But the truth of the character lies somewhere else entirely for the actor, and it’s the one that lends itself well to a story of Clark living a family-oriented life when he’s not flying around saving the world.

“And then there’s this guy in the center,” Hoechlin says. “I don’t really think that there’s a right answer in saying that ‘he is Superman’ or ‘he is Clark.’”

Clark will face some challenges as he readjusts to Smallville life, but it’s the famously outspoken Lois who has her work cut out for her.

“Lois has a tendency to put her foot in her mouth and sometimes she doesn’t think before she speaks,” Tulloch says. “You will see her get into trouble a little bit with the people of Smallville because she thinks she’s doing the right thing on their behalf, but not really thinking through their specific needs.”

Despite these weighty and dramatic concepts, there’s no shortage of super-powered action in the first two episodes, in which Superman takes on a mysterious, armored foe. For those wondering whether they need to be up on the various continuity bylaws of a TV universe that encompasses no fewer than six other shows, the first episode kicks off with a wonderful crash course in the history of this particular Superman and Lois, and there’s no baggage from other series to contend with.

“My mom watches everything that my brother [Aaron Helbing of The Flash, Knightfall, and more] and I do, and she didn’t read comic books,” Helbing says. “If she can’t understand what’s going on, then we’ve failed. But in the same light, there’s a huge fanbase, so we want to put Easter eggs in there and we want to tell stories about characters that everybody knows [from] the comics. We want to satisfy both at the same time, but ultimately, our job is to just tell a good story, and that takes focus.”

Getting what these particular characters represent right matters more to fans than superpowered brawls, crossovers, or intricate continuity. (“Part of why Tyler and I take this really seriously [is] because we know these roles are iconic for a reason,” Tulloch says). Embodying those core values is what made Hoechlin and Tulloch’s portrayals connect so strongly with fans in the crossovers, and it’s something everyone involved in the spinoff series intends to continue.

“It’s such a polarized world that we’re living in,” Hoechlin says. “Superman’s ability to stand for what’s right without having to, for lack of a better word, demonize, is something I really appreciate about him. For me, that’s really that idea of compassion and empathy towards everyone. I think his hope is that everyone finds the right path.”

But as it so often does when discussing the world of Superman, it always comes back to that one word: hope.

“Superman has always been hopeful,” Helbing says. “Considering everything that we’ve gone through this year, hope is infused in there and it should be. But it has to feel real, and it has to come out of hopefulness for real struggles that anybody watching this can relate to. If Superman can struggle and he still remains hopeful, and if Lois can struggle and she remains hopeful, then I think maybe we can, too.”

Strings Attached (part 2) - Benedict x Reader

A/N: Finally managed to post this!! I'm really sorry for the delay, but tumblr wasn't allowing me to make text posts, and I'll admit that I got a bit desperate! The problem was fixed and my exams are over now though, so expect to hear from me again soon ;D PS: I changed the concept of the request a little bit to fit my ideas, I hope you guys don't mind it!

Requested by anonymous: Benedict x reader. The reader is invited her ex in-laws wedding anniversary. She leaves her daughter in the care of her ex. While she helps in the kitchen and Benedict talks her best friend. He turns in back on her for a minute and she gets pushed in to the swimming pool but can’t swim. Benedict reacts straight away jumping in clothes and all to save her.

[Part 1]

The sun was peeking through the kitchen window when Olivia dragged you out of your room.

She was wearing white overalls patterned with yellow flowers and a white shirt tucked underneath it, her hair pulled up in two pigtails and a big smile plastered on her face. The excitement was radiating off her like the rays of sun outside, and even though you were feeling nervous and slightly uncomfortable, her happiness was enough to make you shake off your uneasiness.

That was the day of your ex in-laws’ anniversary party, and you’d be attending it after much insistence from them. Greg and Laura were the sweetest couple you’d probably ever met, and you owed them much. They’d helped you tons during your pregnancy, and had taken care of Liv whenever you’d needed them to, though the same couldn’t be said about their son…

“Come on, mommy!” Liv pulled you by the hand towards the door, and you couldn’t help but laugh at her enthusiasm. She absolutely loved visiting her grandparents, especially when it meant she’d be able to play in the pool and eat as much candy as her stomach could handle. “We’re gonna be laaaate,” she whined and you rolled your eyes, shaking your head as your removed your wrist from her grasp in order to take your purse and the bottle of wine you’d be giving Greg and Laura from the kitchen counter.

You were wearing a long floral summer dress that contrasted well with your skin and held a modest cleavage, and was tied back by two strings that met behind your neck. The party would be held in their house, so it’d be something a bit more casual; just for family and friends.

The word ‘family’ was what was scaring you though. You knew that he’d be there - he was Laura and Greg’s son, after all - but it was enough to make you anxious…

You shook those thoughts away when you heard the doorbell ring.

A smile immediately stretched on your lips and Liv jumped excitedly beside you, running towards the door and pushing it open to reveal a grinning Benedict standing on the doorway. His eyes connected with yours for a brief moment before he focused his attention on the little girl claiming his attention.

“Hey, Livie,” Benedict said, taking his hands out of his pockets and kneeling in front of her so she could hug him. You watched the scene and couldn’t help but swoon at how loving Benedict was with your daughter. He wrapped his arms around Liv's waist and lifted her up so he was carrying her back inside, her giggles echoing around the living room as he approached you on the kitchen counter. “Hello, love,” he said, taking your hand into his free one and pressing it to his lips affectionately.

“Hey, Ben. Thanks for coming,” you held onto his hand and pulled him a little closer. “Ready to go, Liv?” you looked at her and she smiled and nodded enthusiastically.

The three of you made your way outside where Benedict’s car was parked, and he lowered Liv slowly so she could get into the backseat and then opened the door for you. Before you went in though, he pulled you closer by the waist and placed a soft kiss to your lips, which you returned wholeheartedly, stroking his cheek and looking at him with such love that you thought you were going to burst.

It was funny, how you’d gone from complete strangers to this.

You'd met in a pretty normal setting, considering who he was and what he did for a living. It'd been a day in which the sun didn't shine and there was heavy rain pouring in heaves from the sky, and Benedict had been in desperate need for something hot to warm him up.

He'd stumbled upon a cafe in downtown London and had immediately gone inside, and it was like the universe had wanted you two to meet.

He'd gotten in line and ordered a jumbo sized hot cocoa and water, and had been revelling on the feeling of not being recognised when he'd felt something pull at his jeans.

Benedict had looked down and thought he'd been looking at an angel.

There had been a little girl looking at him with wide, glittering eyes, her mouth opened in awe as she continued to pull at his legs excitedly.

"Mama, look! It's Doctor!" she'd said with the sweetest voice, her words dragged as Benedict realised she had probably just learned how to speak. "It's my doctor!"

Benedict couldn't help but smile at that. He'd turned fully to her and bent his knees so his eyes were almost levelled with hers. He'd been about to say something when another voice caught his attention and he'd been compelled to look up.

"Darling, I'm not sure you can call him yours just yet," Benedict's eyes had focused on yours, and he'd been blown away once again. You were too beautiful to be true, "you have to introduce yourself first, remember?" You had asked with a supporting hand to the back of the little girl's neck, urging her forward the slightest bit. "Go on. Just like we rehearsed." Your eyes had met Benedict's, and he had to keep from gasping as you gave him a little wink. His breath had caught on his throat and he hadn't been able to do anything but look at you the same way the little girl was looking at him.

“Hello, Mr. Doctor. I’m Olivia, but mama calls me Liv,” she'd said extending a chubby hand towards him, and Benedict had almost laughed at how entirely cute she looked.

“Well, hello, Olivia,” he'd smiled, taking her hand in his and placing a kiss on her knuckles. “It's very nice to meet you,” Benedict had said while he stood up, “and your mother,” he'd added afterwards, watching as you placed a hand on Olivia’s shoulder and looked up at him.

You remembered having looked at him for a long time. You’d never met a celebrity before that, but the fact that he was famous had been the last thing that had crossed your mind. Instead, you hadn’t been able to stop thinking about the fact that he looked even better in person, and that you could never have imagined that he’d be so kind and lovely to fans.

“What are you thinking about, love?” Benedict’s voice brought you back to reality. You looked out the window and realised that you weren’t very far from Greg and Laura’s house. You watched as Benedict took one of his hands off the wheel and placed it on your thigh comfortingly, and you didn’t hesitate before taking it into your own.

“Nothing… I was daydreaming a bit, I guess,” you said with a small smile, and then looked at him with a raised eyebrow. “Are you nervous?” you asked, because Benedict had never met Liv’s grandparents before. Also because perhaps if he was nervous, then it would be okay for you to be nervous as well…

“Not really,” he said nonchalantly, briefly glancing your way before concentrating on the road. “Are you?” Benedict asked, and you could hear the worry in his voice.

You sighed quietly. “A little…” you admitted, and felt Benedict squeeze your hand reassuringly. You looked at the backseat through the rearview mirror and was relieved to see that Liv was paying attention to the cartoon she was watching on Benedict’s tablet, and that she wasn’t really listening to the conversation.

Benedict knew about your story with Liv’s father. Aaron Sanders was a good man, deep down you knew that. The only problem was that when Liv was born, he’d refused to recognise her as his child. Your relationship had started crumbling the night you’d told him about your pregnancy, and he’d left you and had refused to take a paternity test. He had never physically hurt you, but the pain he’d caused you and Liv when he’d denied her had been too great, and for that you thought you’d never be able to forgive him. His parents had been with you the whole time though, and you couldn’t be more grateful for that.

You arrived not long after. It was around midday in London, and the day was uncharacteristically bright. The three of you left the car, and you and Benedict both took one of Liv’s hands on your own as you approached the entrance of the house.

Greg and Laura’s house was big, but you could barely see it behind the trees and leaves that occupied the front yard. You reached the door and Liv rang the doorbell excitedly, bouncing on her feet while you waited.

It was Greg who opened the door. He was wearing jeans overalls similar to Liv’s, and when she saw him, she immediately let go of your hands and ran into his arms.

“Grandpa!” she exclaimed as he lifted her over his head and pretended to let go of her. Liv giggled in his arms as he hugged her and put her down.

“I've missed you, my little Olive,” he said endearingly, patting her back and pointing somewhere inside the house. “Go check on your grandma in the kitchen. She’s making those little cookies that you love,” Greg told her and you watched as Liv went running inside the house. When he looked back at you, there was a glint in his eyes as he opened his arms to hug you. “Ah, (Y/N)… You seem to grow more beautiful every day,” he said patting your head.

“Thank you, Greg. Happy anniversary,” you said when he released you, giving him the bottle of wine you’d brought and taking a step back, holding Benedict’s arm and smiling brightly as you looked up at him. “This is Benedict, my boyfriend,” you introduced him and Greg smiled knowingly, shaking Benedict’s hand firmly.

“I've heard a lot about you, lad,” he said as he allowed the both of you to come inside. “It's good to know someone’s taking good care of my girls,” Greg closed the door and Benedict eyed you with a smile. “I hope you like tuna sandwich. Laura's made buckets of it,” he laughed and led you to the kitchen.

There was a woman holding a tray full of chocolate chip cookies, and by the looks of it, it had just left the oven. Liv had her little hands placed on the counter, watching in awe as her grandmother placed all of the cookies in a jar and left it to the side to cool.

“(Y/N), darling, it’s been so long!” Laura finally noticed you, cleaning her hands in a towel by the sink and coming to hug you.

“Nonsense, Laura. We saw her last week!” Greg said, sticking his hand into the pot of cookies to take one for himself.

Laura slapped his hand away from it with a roll of her eyes. “Oh, hush, Gregory. And stop eating the food, or else there won’t be anything left for the guests!” she reprimanded, sending him away with her hands.

Greg only laughed and crushed his wife’s face to his lips, kissing her cheek soundly. “Come join me later at the grill, Benedict. I’ll teach you my trick to make the perfect burger,” he said and then left the kitchen, Liv trailing after her grandfather and out of your view.

Laura shook her head, and when she looked back at you her eyes focused on Benedict’s tall frame and she smiled brightly, clapping her hands together in excitement. “And of course, you must be Benedict!” she took his hand into her both. “He's so handsome, (Y/N),” she winked at you, making you turn a bright shade of red. “Even more so than on-screen,” she said, and this time it was Benedict who blushed, chuckling lightly. “Now you two go seat outside. I wouldn’t want any of you to be stuck here with me while the day is so beautiful.”

You did as she asked, congratulating her for her anniversary first and then taking Benedict by the hand towards the backyard. It was smaller than the house, but still bigger than most. There were several trees at the back of it, and the pool was located a bit closer to the house. Laura and Greg had set a few tables on the grass, and there were people sitting on one of them. They were mostly cousins and friends of Greg and Laura’s, and you greeted them all before sitting on one table along with Benedict.

It didn’t take long for Liv to find you again. “Mommy, can I go into the pool?” she asked, and you looked at her with a raised eyebrow.

“Not yet, darling. Can't you wait a bit longer? I promise I’ll go with you in a little while,” you answered, and she groaned audibly.

“Please, please, please… I can go alone!” she insisted, but you still shook your head.

“You can’t, Liv. You don’t know how to swim—“ you started to say, but was interrupted by a shadow looming over you.

“I can look after her,” a voice spoke from above you, and you felt your insides grow cold.

You looked up to find Aaron himself staring at you with a weird expression on his face. You felt Benedict’s grip on your hand tighten at the sight of him, and tried to reassure him that everything would be alright with a small smile.

“Aaron,” you said in surprise, sitting straighter on your chair. “Are you sure you want to?” you asked, because you didn’t know if you trusted him enough to take care of Liv, and because he’d already neglected her before, and you certainly didn’t want him to hurt her.

“Of course,” he answered nonchalantly, looking relaxed and at ease with one hand tucked loosely into the pocket of his jeans and the other leaning on his hip. “I'm great with kids,” he said as a matter of fact and you raised an eyebrow, but gave in. You didn’t want to cause a scene, and you didn’t think he’d do anything to hurt your daughter.

With a sigh and a sideways glance towards Benedict, you finally nodded. “Okay… But let me know if you need any help,” you said and he smirked in a way that you were so used to, and that made your stomach turn— and definitely not in a good way.

Once Liv went inside to change clothes and Aaron left your side, you finally allowed yourself to relax, releasing a breath that you didn’t even realise you’d been holding.

“You okay, love?” Benedict asked beside you, taking your hand in his and rubbing a comforting pattern along your skin. You just nodded, though you weren’t really sure if you were actually fine. “Sure you don’t want me to watch her?” he asked worriedly, and you finally looked up at him.

“No, it’s alright. I want you to enjoy yourself,” you smiled, lifting a hand to touch his cheek. “Perhaps you can bond a little with Greg? I’m sure he’s dying to show you how to flip the meat on the grill,” you said and Benedict laughed, pulling you closer to press his lips to your head. Then he pushed his chair back and stood up, but didn’t leave before kissing your knuckles once more.

“I’ll keep an eye on her from afar,” he assured you and then left to join Greg, who was thrilled to see someone was interested in learning his cooking techniques. You smiled at the sight of them, and decided you’d help Laura in the kitchen to keep her company.

You waited until Liv joined Aaron by the pool and you were sure he was taking good care of her before you got up and went back inside. Laura was stirring something in a big pot when you found her, and you were happy to help her prepare the rest of the meals.

Outside, Benedict was laughing along with Greg when he heard a cough. His eyes immediately went towards the pool, and he started feeling the despair crush his lungs when he couldn’t see Liv or Aaron by the pool.

He left Greg’s side without a word and went to look for Olivia. His eyes caught a glimpse of her hair on the water, and he realised she was stuck underneath a big, colourful float in the pool.

Benedict suddenly couldn’t think of anything but to get her out, so he desperately grabbed the float and threw it aside, and his arms lifted Liv’s body out of the water with difficulty. She’d gotten to the deeper side of the pool unnoticed, and he was relieved to hear she was still breathing when he pulled her into his arms.

Liv coughed hard into his shirt and he just tapped her back as he held her loosely so she could breathe. “It's okay, love. You’re okay,” Benedict soothed her as she started crying. He looked around to see that Greg was rushing toward them worriedly, his hands finding Liv’s hair and running through it in an attempt to calm her down. What caught Benedict’s attention wasn’t Liv’s grandfather though, but the fact that Aaron was coming their way with a glass of cold beer on his hand and an alarmed look on his face. Their gazes met and Benedict was sure Aaron could see the burning anger in his eyes. He was about to shout at him when something else caught his attention.

You came running from inside the house, approaching them quickly and looking at the scene in front of you with worry. Benedict’s clothes were drenched in water as he held a coughing and crying Liv protectively, and when you finally reached them, you took your daughter’s face in your hands to see if she was alright.

“What happened?” you asked once you realised she was fine; just scared. “You were supposed to be looking after her, Aaron!” you yelled at him without sparing him a glance.

“I was just filling my glass!” he tried to defend himself, but one look from you was enough to make him shut up.

You went to the table you’d been sitting at and searched your bag for Liv’s towel, covering her - who was still on Benedict’s arms - once you’d found it. The two of you took her inside to change her clothes, and once she was dressed and dry, it was as if nothing had happened. She was grinning and happy again, and rushed down the stairs to be with her grandmother.

You sighed irritably once she’d left. “I should never have accepted Greg and Laura's invitation,” you said, furiously tucking Olivia’s wet clothes into a plastic bag. “I knew seeing him again would be a bad idea… He- Liv doesn’t even know he’s her father!” you ranted. “God, I’m just so stupid—“

You were interrupted by Benedict’s arms encircling your waist. His shirt was wet against your back, but you paid it no mind as he held your wrists to still your movements. You sighed and allowed him to turn you around to look at him. Your hands fell to your sides as he lifted his to take the hair from your eyes, tucking the loose strands behind your ears affectionately.

“You’re not stupid, (Y/N),” he said, moving his fingers to cup your cheeks. “You're the most intelligent, and amazing, and beautiful woman I’ve ever met, and that’s why I fell in love with you in the first place,” he said, making you smile slightly. “This wasn’t your fault, love.” His words were spoken in a way that left no space for discussion, so you only nodded. “Now, Liv is fine and there’s a delicious burger waiting for you downstairs… “ he let his hands fall to the sides of your neck. “Please don’t let this ruin your day,” he asked and didn’t allow you to answer because his lips were suddenly touching yours, and you couldn’t think of anything else other than the feel of his mouth on yours.

When you finally parted you were feeling slightly dizzy, but you couldn’t help the smile that grew on your lips. “I'm sorry you got all wet,” you said running a hand down his shirt.

“It's quite alright, love,” he replied with a smile. “Now let’s get down there so I can show you all the amazing stuff Greg’s taught me.”

The rest of the day went by in a blur. Laura’s food was delicious and you and Benedict had loads of fun with Liv.

Aaron didn’t reappear until you were leaving. You were at the door holding Liv’s hand when Benedict emerged from the kitchen being followed by a frightened and pale-looking Aaron. You eyed the both of them suspiciously, but didn’t say anything until you were lying on your bed with Benedict and Liv had already retreated to her room.

“So, what is it that you said to Aaron back there when we were leaving?” you asked curiously, lifting your head from Benedict’s chest to look him in the eyes.

He chuckled; his chest vibrating under your fingers. “Oh, not much…” he replied nonchalantly, one of his hands coming to hold yours over his chest while the other caressed your face. “Just enough to put him in his place…"
