Smoke and dust clouded over the cloaked figure, the sound of blasters firing through the air still ringing in her Montrals---an all too familiar sound that matched the heavy rumble of boots marching across the ground. Not clones, but troopers. One of the cavern boulders crumbled to the ground, spraying more dirt and debris, but also providing a momentary cover.

It was only then that she felt another presence, heard a voice calling towards her as she re-gathered her senses. She could feel blood oozing from her brow and forced herself to blink her surroundings back into focus.

A young woman with dark, chestnut hair and mute robes appeared beside her. She placed a gentle hand over Ahsoka's side, her dark eyes gazing sharply in the direction of the gathering troop forces. Ahsoka knew the girl was right, there was no time to waste and they needed to move.

She urged her feet onward, briefly catching a glimpse of morai flying ahead---a guiding light through the cavern. ❝ That way. ❞ Ahsoka rasped, wincing at the dryness in her own voice. ❝ We must hurry. ❞

They raced after her winged friend, and Ahsoka took the moment to raise her hand, painted brow knitting in brief concentration. More boulders crumbled down, effectively cutting off the route they fled from the troopers--it would hold for now as they weaved their way out. Her body ached, and she knew she was still wounded but she couldn't afford to be caught now.

She sensed light further ahead, could hear Morai screech in confirmation. Through the fissure, she smelled moss and other means of vegetation. Bursting through, she was grateful to the grass that greeted the heel of her boot. Groaning, she leaned on a nearby wall of rock to catch her breath. She did not know who this young woman was but--all the same, she was grateful.

Book Review: Grey Sister, Book 2 of the Ancestor Trilogy, by Mark Lawrence

So I finished this one a week ago, but got busy and forgot to post up my review. However, in the spirit of better late than never, here it is!

I loved Red Sister. The first book of the Ancestor series, it was a fantastic epic grimdark fantasy. It left me wanting more and so I couldn’t be more excited when Grey Sister finally came out in mass market and I could get my copy (I have a thing about books in series being in the same format...you know what I’m talking about). But with the second book of any trilogy, there is always the fear of the “saggy middle”. We’ve all seen it with books, and with movies, where the action drops off and the book seems like a slog because we’re being set up for all the big things that will happen in number 3.

I am thrilled to say that Grey Sister more than lives up to it’s predecessor! The story had me hooked back in right away, and I did not want to have to stop reading (sadly one must do things like work, eat and sleep...) because I just wanted to know what happened next. I was thrilled to get into the head of more characters in the story, along with following Nona’s journey. It was great to see the curtains pulled back and learn more about the backgrounds of some of the most important and influential characters, getting hints about what is coming next without having anything given away. Its been a while since I’ve been dragged into and held with a story the way the Book of the Ancestor series has grabbed me. Mark Lawrence is a master storyteller and does not disappoint.

I am so excited for Holy Sister to come out that I have done something I generally hate doing for book series I love - I’ve put the hardcover on hold at the library so I don’t have to wait so long to read it! I desperately want to own it, of course, but until the mass market comes out to keep the shelves looking pretty... I was actually shocked (and I really don’t know why, the series is just so good) that I was the 12th! person to put a hold on Holy Sister, despite the book not even being out yet. All I can hope is that the 11 people before me are fast readers...

                        This is the right place, Alleras thought as he turned his head upwards to read the sign and took his headphones off. He didn’t know what to expect, or how exactly he was going to convince this engineer to come quietly with him to Dorne. Judging from the bio he was given, he was the same age as this ‘Rey’, and there was no way she was going to believe that he was the son of some Dornish Prince -- not looking like this, with his sneakers and hoodie. 

                       ( Fuck, I should’ve worn my black suit and sunglasses, eh? )

                       He strode over to the door and pulled it open, stepping inside. Unassuming enough, he wandered around, eyes searching the garage for the face he was given a photo of. Well -- frankly, it was easy enough to spot the only woman working here. Making his way to her, he bent down, tilting his head to look at her from under the car she was working on. 

                       “ Rey? I’m Allera.s S.and. Can we speak?”
