Memories Past

Here is my fourth and final entry for @stanuary this year for Week 4: Past. It is set in my Lost and Gained AU. Again. But I wanted to write something that I’ve wanted to do for a while and this has been a good excuse for it. There are ocs of mine who are also from the OBWHF AU and new ones for this au. Hope you all enjoy!

Stan took out a photo album of his that documents moments in time he received from his wife Andrea’s parents all those years ago that began their journey together as a couple. The first photos of him and Andy together when they were teenagers. Back then as a teenager, Andy wore her auburn hair short in a bob and she liked wearing turquoise colored tops and blue skorts where the stripped skirt reached her knees and dark blue boots. Stan sighed while turning each page of pictures.

That night at prom where Stan wore that slick pink suit and pants, and Andy wore a blue-green dress with a white corsage around her wrist. Stan carried Andy in a bridal style for the photo with his then-girlfriend having wrapped her arms around his neck. And right next to his picture with Andy was Ford and his then girlfriend/now wife Lucina Evergreen, who came all the way from Gravity Falls to be his date of the evening. The four had a grand time dancing and drinking punch. Stan and Andy did much more after they dropped Ford and Lucina off at their respective places at the time. 

Fast forward to Stan sitting next to Andy at the hospital holding their newborn twin children, James Stanford and Jessie Catherine Pines, on May 5 of 1972. Looking at this picture brought back those emotional feelings of happiness and nervousness he felt back then of becoming a new dad. There were ups and downs that came with parenting, but Stan figured he did alright and used what he learned when his and Andy’s third and final child, Leroy Stanley Pines, four years after James and Jessie were born. Leroy was born with bright ginger hair, unlike his older twin siblings who had brown hair in the next photo after passing through photos of when him and Andy were hopping state to state with their kids and dog Butch they had at the time. 

Stan turned the page to the photo of him and Andy marrying in Las Vegas with a sea-themed backdrop. It was exactly what they had in mind for a quick, no-stress and cheap wedding where their kids got to witness. Andy wore a white dress with a sea green sash around her waist and pearls around her neck and Stan in a black suit. 

Stan paused and looked up at the wall where his first comic book was displayed in a frame right next to Andy’s master degree in marine biology. Before coming to Gravity Falls and what followed after. A rough time for the family. Stan had to put his dream on hold for a while, as did Andy in order to get Ford, Lucina, and their twin daughters in an unexpected twist.

But before that were to happen, Stan continued to browse through the pictures that fast forward to the grand opening of the Mystery Shack, his three children getting older and beginning their lives with their own jobs, finding love, and forming families of their own. James got married to a werewolf woman named Tara Greyson with four children Cormac, and identical triplets Arya, Aria and Anais. Jessie found not one but two people, Lillian Prescott and Maurice Devlin-Pierce to be with and had three children, Tanya, Stanley Junior and Tyrone. Then Leroy had found his own love with a man named Harlow McCorkle and had one son, Arlo. Stan and Andy had one of each grandchildren’s picture within the album as newborns. Those grandchildren have grown so quickly since then. 

Stan was almost finished with the album when Andy came inside. 

“Hey, handsome. See you’re lookin’ through the old book.”

Stan kept the album open and let out a chuckle. “Yeah, And. I guess I felt like going through it.” Andy wrapped her arm around her husband in affection. 

“Nothin’ wrong with feelin’ a bit nostalgic. Time sure has flown away.” Andy let out a heavy sigh. 

“Almost through with it, anyhow. Getting to the part where we hired Soos.” Stan turns the page and finds a younger Soos with a question mark t-shirt that was bigger than he was at the time, but he would grow into it. “Let me tell ya, he became one of the best employees we ever had! Not counting our kids and grandkids, because we taught them the trade.”

“I wholly agree. Do you think we can keep the Mystery Shack goin’? You aren’t gettin’ any younger.”

“Yer right. And that’s if Sixer wants to keep the place a tourist trap, but I think it grew on him. I do have an idea who can keep it going.” Stan and Andy exchange smiles. 

The moment was broken when Ford entered the room. 

“Stan, you said you’ll be picking up the twins at the bus stop, right?”

“Oh, right!” Stan put down the photo album on the bed and gets up on his feet. He gives his wife a parting kiss. “I’ll be back soon.”

“Love you, Stan.”

“Love you, too.”

Hi Aly! I really liked your previous post and your devotion to the ship, so I was wondering if you had, by any chance, a list of Keenler scenes/episodes? I know it is a lot to ask, but considering the situation we are in, I wanted to start rewatching the series focusing fully on Keenler! Another thing. Do you know where I can find the comic that you uploaded in the post with your thoughts about Ressler being Liz’s source of light? Thank you for everything!! ❤️

Hi there and thank you!  Sorry it’s taken me a day or two to respond to this - I recently posted a list of fav Ressler/Keenler eps off the top of my head in the Keenler group chat here on Tumblr so this list will be very similar to that with some additions.

For the comic book - I know the books are available as graphic novels for purchase through Amazon. I still have my original digital editions through the Comixology app back from when I got the new issues live and I think they still sell them both as individual issues and as graphic novels.  I also feel like I saw a post somewhere (Reddit maybe?) recently that said they are available somewhere else online but I’m not sure where and I can’t find it easily. If anyone knows, please chime in for anon.  They were last published as individual issues during S3.

Anyway, the non-exhaustive list because I’m sure I’ve missed something:

Season 1: Stewmaker (the hug of course!), The Courier (when she listens to him talk about how the job is all he has left), General Ludd (his sympathy for her pain when she loses her dad), Anslo Garrick (giving up the code once he sees Liz’s face), Mako Tanida (moments throughout but especially her talking him down from shooting Jonica), Kingmaker (the bridge talk plus the “I didn’t know where else to go” at the end), Berlin (him with her in the wreckage of her apartment)

Season 3: The Troll Farmer (she was my partner and the scene with the trap door in the bar, chasing her to the Embassy), Marvin Gerard (Embassy car chase and rescue! diner door scene), Eli Matchett (first phone calls, “good person” talks), Arioch Cain (his testimony; fear that she was dead and the Aram hug), Kings of the Highway (the chase) The Director 1 & 2 (multiple jail scenes, car scene, saving her from the bullet, I’ll keep you safe I promise, etc.)., if you can stomach the wedding in 3.17,  their talk before her wedding &. him showing up at the church, The Artax Network (Ressler only), reaction to her office being cleaned out, taking her foot massager; Alexander Kirk Conclusion (Ressler only) willing to let Red kill Kirk and learning Liz is alive.

Season 4: Esteban (willing to risk himself to rescue her; Cuba restaurant scenes), Mato (rescue at the summer palace and the second hug!), The Forecaster (first time they’re back together in the field), The Harem (those lovely park bench scenes), Isabella Stone (another ambulance scene at the end), Dr. Bodgan Krilov (Liz attacking Krilov and talking Ressler down from shooting Hitchen), The Debt Collector (Samar telling Ressler he needs to be there for Liz despite his suspension; shootout at the cabin).

Season 5: Greyson Blaise (not really a Keenler ep but just fun all around with Ressler in jeans); Miss Rebecca Thrall (Ressler making excuses for phone calls with Prescott), The Kilgannon Corp (horror at her engagement ring; working together on the case); Ian Garvey (another clingy hug (hug #3!) and all the scenes at the hospital), The Informant (Ressler only but very important for his mindset), The Capricorn Killer (his arm around her talking about silver linings), Sutton Ross (the interrogation scenes and Liz’s escape)

Evidence recovered, insurance polices, blackmail. A lot of these blacklisters had proof of their clients and crimes. Prescott had an insurance policy. Keohler had an insurance policy. Kaplan had a trigger of events to release the suitcase. The Pawnbrokers had proof of their transactions that helped free Baldomero. Client lists like The Alchemist and Milton Bobbit. The Stewmaker had his picture book and jars of teeth. The Djinn had a leather journal. The Caretaker had a book with every secret he kept. Greyson Blaise. The Travel Agency. The Informant. A lot of blackmails and contingency plans, triggers upon death. I think they have a blacklister coming up that falls into this category. Ian Garvey with the suitcase, blackmailing Red. Red with his dumster-dive ledger to gain power over Garvey. 

Krilov is an interesting one. Especially with Morgan. Why anyone who had power would wipe a witness’ memory instead of flat out killing them is beyond me. But whatever. They raided his lab and it appears he's willing to travel for targets like Ressler, which means he doesn’t have one set place. Asking for immunity in exchange, which means they have no access to his clients or his patients. But something tells me Krilov is smart enough to keep some kind of record. An insurance policy of his own. 

Anyway, I was thinking back to that 5x1 flashforward because it ties into several of my theories. Tom wasn’t gonna leave, so when Liz said he better not leave or she’d kill him, I felt like he had to die in order for her to learn his truths. He died while she was in a coma, leaving Red to take care of everything. That includes Tom’s medical bills and whatever private accounts he might’ve had like The Travel Agency husband. Krilov's episode was 4x19. Ressler was still suspended in 4x20, but got his badge from Laurel at the end of S4. This means Krilov never cleared him, Laurel did. Liz went into a coma in 5x8, two episodes after The Travel Agency in which she remarried Tom. They push a half season of Tom investigating Red, then end with his death. Another half season of Liz raging war against Garvey, then push us through another half season of Liz investigating Red. All of this for Tom’s death. 

I don’t expect Red’s identity to be revealed until the finale if it’s even revealed at all this season. But Red did give her a truth, one that appears to affect her a huge deal. Which seems funny to me because this truth appears to come out in episode 8 or 9, and we’re not that far past the Alter Ego episode, which I feel was a strong parallel to Tom. As much as people would like to throw Red in that parallel, he doesn’t belong there. Tim wasn’t betrayed by a parent, and Red is most certainly Liz’s parent. While it does speak to Liz’s current feelings and frame of mind, it doesn’t speak to the parallels. When they’re still feeding parallels to Tom Keen long after he’s dead, one has to wonder why. That’s why I suspect the second memory wipe and Keenler baby theory this season. Tom’s story isn’t over because Liz has yet to let him go. He’s half the reason she’s going after Red. That’s why she’s still in the same apartment.

No one’s heard from him in nearly a week, and while everyone else has decided on taking some down time; Greyson’s been off on his own. They can’t blame him. Silas Prescott is and always will be his father, even if he was in charge of the terrible things that’s befallen so many.

They all need to recuperate after what they’ve uncovered. It’s more than required - it’s necessary.

A week has passed since the incident. Apart from the exchange of abrupt text messages, Alex has barely heard anything. The only person’s she’s been in a lot of contact with is Kenji, and with him it’s always been more about pleasure and not business. Though they’ve yet to put a label on it; she enjoys spending a lot of time with him and this weekend is no different.

Kenji has been playing The Evil Within 2 since last night.

Alex only knows this because she’s been here since this morning. He was still inside his pajamas when she’d come in demanding some alone time with him, and now they’ve been sitting beside one another and munching on left over pizza the past hour.

Kenji’s barely broken focus since she’s been over. He’d lean over and place a quick kiss on her cheeks before bringing his attention back onto the game. His brows are in a constant fix of concentration, and his eyes only flicker over when he has to grab a snack. The rest of him slightly remains slightly hunched over as his fingers run hastily across his Xbox controller.

Alex doesn’t mind, not at first anyway.

The story is interesting, and as a fan of survival horrors herself - she’s more than capable of giving it credit where credit’s due. She’s managed to even tackle the control long enough in the rare moments where Kenji makes a dire mistake and Sebastian dies.  Yet it isn’t enough. Before long she can practically feel agitation fueling her desire to grab Kenji’s attention away from the game, the longer she sits.

She’s waiting on Sebastian’s next death. She’s waiting on Kenji to take a break. She’s waiting on him to notice her with more than a passing interest today. She’s waiting for a lot of things.

Hours tick by until she’s finally had enough of waiting. The last of her patience begins trickling as she taps her feet tapping insistently beside him.

Still nothing.

“Kenji,” she chides, lips forming a slight frown.

“Hmm?” His only response is somewhere between a dim hum and a nod as the ex-cop - Sebastian stoops to sneak by the horrifying looking monster on screen.

Feeling exasperated, Alex scoots closer and purposefully runs her hand across his arm. She’s always a little thrilled when she feels his muscles flexing under her fingertips and she takes the time to make lazy circles across until he tenses beside her.

Her eyes glances up in triumph, only to sigh once she realizes he’s tensing because of the game and not her. “Kenji,” she says a second time, except her voice raises a little higher - a slight whine from the hours they’ve spent stuck inside. She loves video games as much as the next person; but she’s also human. And being beside Kenji so long is difficult without craving his affection - the little smirky remarks he makes and the little kisses he usually sneaks by her cheek.

And like a half-starved woman, she’s frustrated with being ignored.

“Wait, wait. This scene’s important.” His eyes don’t flicker away from the screen as Sebastian begins changing his pace, running down a long winding hall while the monster screams behind him. “I’ve just gotta get -”

Her impatience wins out.

Leaning over, she places a string of kisses down his neck; eliciting a shudder from him. She grins in response until she feels him pulling away. Her smile drops in a flash.

“Alex -” He curves in the other direction, arms bunching together in their effort to keep the controller steady as Sebastian reaches another hall. He’s still running from the monster that’s hot on his heels.

The screeching grows louder than Alex’s complaints but she’s determined to grab and hold his attention. Scooting closer, she drapes both arms around his neck and plants another kiss, this time she lingers long enough to hear him mutter under his breath.

He tries to squirm away, but her superhuman strength keeps him in place.  It makes it harder for him to disentangle himself from her.

“Alex -”

She traces her lips further up until they reach his ear. Without missing a beat, she nibbles gently until she hears a sharp hiss leaving his throat. Then presses herself closer to plant a quick smooch by his nose. “The game’s not going anywhere Kenji,” her voice comes out husky as she slips switches sides and kisses the other side of his neck while her wandering hands. “But I might be.” Her threat is playful, teasing.

“Is that so?”

She can almost sense the shift of his mood. He hasn’t stopped her from kissing lower and lower until she’s almost fallen inside his lap. Then she does. The last inches give way and he sits upright to catch her in time.

His arms instantaneously shoot out to steady her as she tumbles forward and knocks the controller out of his hands. “Woops,” It’s not much of an apology, and her she’s almost beaming in triumph when she glances up at him.

His face is a mixture of torture. For a moment Kenji looks torn between her and grabbing his controller.

Alex decides for him. She sits up enough to fasten her arms around his neck and yanks him closer until their lips meet.

He tries to pull away at first, but her arms around him tightens and eventually she feels his lips pressed against hers. Their kisses start slow before becoming fervent and her breath hitches when he tries to shift on top of her. The shift of his weight brings a flush to her cheeks, and her hands slip to feel the lean width of his back.

They both freeze at the sound of his controller falling. Screeching noises rises higher with intensity from Kenji’s television set before reaching its highest crescendo. They both break away at the same time to stare incredulously at the screen as Sebastian collapses with his familiar death animation.

Kenji sighs miserably, “Great.” At the sound of her laugher he shoots her a smirk. “I guess there’s nothing stopping us now.” Leaning closer, he presses his forehead against hers. “Happy?”

“Ecstatic.” She beams. 

When their lips meet again, they’ve forgotten about the game altogether.

ChoicesHero, an informal review

So, let’s talk about Hero. In my last post I hadn’t finished the chapter cause I had gotten bored, but I will be writing this review as I play and finish it so you’ll get my thoughts right as I have them.

Let’s begin. Warning, long post is long.

The beginning, the part I have the most problems with. For all stories, no even the first chapter, but the very first couple of scenes are supposed to hook you into the story. Hero does not accomplish this. After making our characters, players are thrown into the future. Cool, but... not really. Or at least, it could’ve been, but wasn’t. We are placed in this destroyed fictional city. I get that making up your own city gives you creative freedom, that’s fine and I encourage it, but in this case, the beginning fails to make me care. If that had used a real city, in this case, I would have had real world relevance and a connection. Is it the Gotham to my Batman? Did the major call me up on my little red phone and I flew a couple hundred miles to save the city? Who knows, the story doesn’t tell you. Then you meet the villain of the series... I think. The villain is never actually shown, you see and you don’t know exactly what he... she... it has done. I mean... they know you... somehow, but you don’t know whether they destroyed the city themselves to try and find you or if they’re an alien who crashed landed or was a regular human who exploded when they got superpowers. You are lead to assume the first, but again... nothing is clear. 

There is a really generic ‘stop right there villain’ or something along those lines, but... again... the villain's face is never shown. I guess that was done intentionally to keep the big bad a secret to make his reveal shocking, but considering you don’t know who they are or what they’ve done or even how relevant they are to you it backfires. Then they deliver the most cliche line ever and I...like... just fuck off. “You don’t understand who you are. You keep running from yourself. You haven’t even begun to comprehend the power within you.” Then just like that, the beginning of Hero ends. You have no idea what the stakes are, what evil is waiting for you, or are convinced to make a connection. It only raised more questions, but not in the way where I want them answered like a good suspenseful story should (*cough* ES *cough*)… it is more like leaving exam questions blank or answering a question like “What is your birthday?” with “I have a birthday.”

Anyways, after that we flashback to the present… because that’s original… surprise (not really) you’re an ordinary human with no super powers. Really cliche, but I don’t hold that against them. It’s not a bad cliche, per say, like the constant female romantic rivals in RoE+TFM. I just... assumed Hero would’ve been about our MC already being a superhero who recruits other heroes to beat the big bad, but that’s not a negative against Hero or PB just a thought. Let’s get back on topic. Our MC is late to work! They have an ordinary job with an ordinary (low?) pay. Basically, this is a ‘regular guy/girl becomes special’ type of story cause... not like there aren’t hundreds of stories like that in the world. But, again, cliches aren’t bad, per say, if you write them right. So we get dressed for work and, honestly, I like the simple blue outfit, guys. Why are you dragging it? So we go off to work and are late getting on the train. Oh, so this is that type of story. You’ll see what I mean in a moment. We meet Poppy and she’s cute, but she reminds me a lot of Payton from HSS. They talk for a short time about how the big company MC works for is going to introduce their big new invention and it is so obvious that this is what’s going to give superpowers. Then, instead of introducing Poppy some more to allow players to actually become attached to her, they introduce Greyson Prescott... and he’s the Chris/Mark of the series. The main white LI of the series, the one you're supposed to fall in love with despite there being other (*cough* better *cough*) options. Now, they introduce Greyson, except he's not even introduced, he’s just talked about by Poppy who’s trying to set us up with him... despite him being our boss. That’s gross PB, stop shipping us with our boss/professor. This isn’t even good writing. You don’t just... stick readers right in the middle of character’s lives and have them play catch up. You need to show why these people are interested in one another or why they’re best friends, not just tell you by reminding players of history that they don’t know about. After we’re done talking with Poppy, we actually get introduced to Grayson and he’s... nice. That’s it. Our first impression of the guy that’s forced on us is that... he’s nice. That’s boring, PB. Nice is not a personality trait. He’s also really plain looking. Default white guy model #23. Also, we have high school history so our MC already knows him well, but we the players don’t because… sure, the first chapter of a new book series why bother introduce a character and form a relationship when you can lay down some pre-established history players have to piece together and just accept that the two are really good friends. Not like you haven’t done that before…. oh wait, yes you did. Mark Collins. This is the problem I had with Mark. Just... an entire life’s worth of history we're just supposed to accept and only really told through premium choices. That’s lazy. I mean, it is okay to intro some characters your MC already knows, but stories are character driven. If you take out introducing characters and the point of getting to know them you remove half the interest of even becoming attached to the main cast.

So, Grayson’s intro is cut short when Marasshole comes in to give us shit. It is so obvious she’s the designated rude character that gives the MC a hard time. Like... even more than that invention is going to give us superpowers. And when I say she’s rude, I mean she’s really rude. Borderline “Why haven’t I reported you, you shouldn’t be talking to employees that way” rude. And she’s rude because... she’s old? She hates millennials for some reason cause... she’s old. Throughout our interactions with her, she keeps painting the picture that our MC is a terrible employee/have no future/incompetent. Not only is this a weak way to get players to care about the main character, it also plays into what I was talking about before with Greyson. What type of history does our MC have with Marasshole? Why is she talking to us like this? No idea, he reasoning is RoE!Mallory levels of confusing. So, yeah, instead of getting on with introducing the main cast or the plot or getting superpowers we spend an admittingly short yet boring scene helping Marasshole replace a shellfish catering dish cause... one of the guests is allergic to seafood. I don’t understand why we’re doing this. I thought we were Greyson’s assistant, not even just that, but I’m the executive assistant. Doesn’t that mean I’m at the tippity top of assistants? Shouldn’t Marasshole be taking orders from me? I having trouble processing this scene because this lady just comes in giving us a hard time, but the story never establishes who she is or establish her rank in comparison to me before playing out this dumb scene.

So, finally, that scene ends and go off to the lab to meet Dax. He’s not there, but the invention is hidden under a tarp. We get the option to peek or wait for Dax and fuck yeah I’m going to peek, this book has been boring so far and I’m ready for superpowers. There’s shaking when you near it, but before you can see what the thing is, Dax appears and stops you because... of course, he did. They could’ve pulled a Spiderman origin and had us get zapped where we slowly become a superhero, but no. Dax... is cool, but he reminds me of Nishan from HSS and Whitlock. Mostly Nishan. Dax notes that the shaking is abnormal but as we walk away the shaking goes away, but instead of checking it out Dax says it is ready for the presentation. He even said all systems go like... fuck man, no need to run tests. Not like this thing could explode or anything. Random ass occurrence, no need to worry. Then... randomly, MC mentions Poppy is going to the gala and Dax gets all flustered because PoppyxDax is the secondary couple and they have a preestablished relationship. Like a ‘will they, won’t they’ type of thing. More history us the players have to catch up on cool. Next, we meet Santiago Lupo, chief of security, who… tells us about a string of robberies. Probably going to be our first big gig as a hero. Can’t wait to actually do something. Santiago seems cool tho, I like him. Okay, NOW we get to meet and formally be introduced to Grayson as a character. Better late than never, but...he’s a generic nice guy. Very reasonable, very approachable, very boring. 

Now we’re preparing for the Gala and Poppy just said swankiest… strike one. She pushes me to wear something nice so I don’t have to be single. Strike two. Oh boy, yeah, yeah  Grayson is defiantly the front runner LI. Is he the only LI choice? If yes, that’s boring. If not, if this is going to be a #LH thing, you really shouldn’t have opened with Greyson. Poppy mentions all the hard times in college they shared because... why intro characters and let us get attached when you can establish history the player just have to accept. So, now we decide what to wear at the event. Either an appropriate dress to the fancy gala or wear the work clothes you wore earlier today despite the fact that everyone will be dressing up. Really, PB? You couldn’t have just designed a basic dress? Am I going to get shade for.... oh, yup, yeah. The answer is yes. 

We make it to the gala. “What is this, gang up on MC day?” Apparently. Poppy and Dax have a preestablished relationship that will probably cost diamonds to actually ship them together, but like AbbiexTyler will probably end up together by book 2 and I have no control over it so like Tyler and Abbie I don’t care. So then we meet Meiko Katsaros. Her name is green so I guess she’s important, but after a little scene in which she’s mad with her son, Kenji, she goes away... without us even talking to her. Was that suppose to be significant? Jump to meeting Silas Prescott, Greyson’s daddy, and he’s… not white? Or at least really tan. There is a significant difference in skin tone between daddy and his baby boy. Is Greyson suppose to be mixed or adopted? Also... Silas has great hair and such a better name. Honestly, they should’ve just swapped features. Give Greyson the name Silas, darker skin tone, and the hair. Anyways, Silas gives his son “the look” and yeah he’s definitely evil or shady. He calls his son a loser and Greyson walks off, clearly upset. See... this would’ve bee a good chance to get to know Greyson. But no. This is a premium option. Instead of exploring the character so we give a damn, you make it premium. Sorry, I’m not paying for cut content. What is this? #LH?

Okay, big announcement time. We finally get to see what this damn invention is that will apparently change the world. Finally going to get superpowers in some freak accident. Maybe Silas will get some two and it’ll be some sort of reverse mirror thing. Why you, not me. I get the good superpowers while Silas is deformed. For some reason the word ‘watch’ is green. What... did PB know I was going to get bored and was reminding me to pay attention? The invention is some sort of clean energy generator using some exotic mystery crystal, oh so this is a magical destiny sort of thing. Before he can demonstrate it some military-esque mercenary guys dressed in black break through the ceiling and FINALLY something exciting happens, BUT THEN THE CHAPTER ENDS!!! Things actually get exciting, but PB’s like ‘nah, this is where we’ll end the first chapter”. We don’t even get superpowers.
