Grigem au idea

gem is life itself and grian is death. everything grian touches withers away in his hands. gem brings life to anything she touches. gem is the only thing grian can touch without destroying it.

Gem wouldn't say she has it as hard as Grian, but it's difficult when everything you touch springs full of life. Flowers everywhere, moss, ugh!

It doesn't stop them finding fun things to do, though. Like passing something (not sentient) back and forth. The process of decay and growth is fascinating!

A Dredge and Phasmophobia inspired grigem au, where Gem is looking for her missing husband, and Grian is a ghost keeping her safe from the horrors of the sea

Explanation below the read more

During a period of time when they’re selling less fish then normal, Grian sees an advert for a fishing job pretty far out from where they live. Apparently there has been sightings of strange mutated fish, and a fisher is wanted to collect some specimens for a researcher there. Seeing as they aren’t making enough sales to require both of them fishing at home anyway, both him and Gem decide it could be a good idea for him to take the job. He’ll be back in two weeks and earn enough money to make up for their recent decrease in sales.

But after two weeks Grian doesn’t return, and Gem gets worried when he stops answering her letters. After a while Grian is officially declared as missing, and Gem sets off to find him.

A permanent fishing job has opened up in the same area Grian disappeared in - not from the researcher, just a regular job - and Gem intends to use the fact that she’s nearby as an opportunity to look for Grian. However, when she arrives there she’s met with stories of hauntings and monsters that lurk below the depths, and it seems the town hasn’t been able to keep a fisher around for more than a few months. Most either quit or go missing.

But Gem doesn’t seem to have any problems. Honestly she’s sure at first that the townspeople are just superstitious. There’s been the aberrations of course - the fish that Grian had been looking for - but she hasn’t seen any monsters.

That is until she’s out fishing at night, far later than she had intended actually; she’d lost her way because her intended shortcut back had been blocked by some rocks that she swore hadn’t been there in the daytime. Now she’s a little ways away from the shoreline, peering ahead of her the short distance that her boat’s light cuts through the fog. There’s lights in the distance that look at first like they belong to a ship, but when they get closer a huge anglerfish comes into view.

Her first encounter with a monster! The stories were true and she’s never going to find Grian - except things still don’t go the way they should, because instead of ending up as monster food and her ship being wrecked, she watches as the anglerfish suddenly recoils as if being attacked, and swims away.

After the monster attack that kills him, Grian finds Gem and he begins haunting her.

He mostly watches as she fishes and searches for him. He tries to write her a note at first - to tell her not to search for him and put herself in the same danger he did - but while he can throw items across the boat, he can’t interact with a pen long enough to form words, so Gem’s notebook ends up thrown halfway across the room instead.

He’s sad he can’t do anything to help her, until the Night Angler appears, and as Gem’s panic grows so does his energy. Instead of hunting Gem, he hunts the anglerfish, until it leaves her ship alone.
