Key Features to Include in Your Online Grocery App Development
Tumblr media
In the fast-paced digital age, the convenience of online grocery shopping has transformed the way people buy their essentials. With the surge in demand for online grocery apps, it's crucial for developers to create platforms that cater to user needs while ensuring a seamless experience.
Here are some key features to consider when developing an online grocery app:
User-Friendly Interface: An intuitive and user-friendly interface is essential for retaining users. The app should be easy to navigate, with clear categories, filters, and search options to help users quickly find the products they're looking for.
Product Listings: Display products with high-quality images, detailed descriptions, prices, and unit measurements. Organize items into categories, and consider adding a "favorites" or "recently purchased" section for personalized recommendations.
Shopping Cart and Wishlist: Users should be able to easily add items to their shopping carts and create wishlists for future purchases. Make sure the cart is accessible from any page and displays a clear summary of selected items.
Delivery Options: Provide flexible delivery options, including same-day or scheduled deliveries. Integration with real-time tracking enables users to monitor the status of their orders and estimated delivery times.
Security and Privacy: Prioritize the security of users' personal and financial information. Implement encryption and comply with data protection regulations.
Conclusion:

roommate!ghost who gets home from a long deployment, forgetting to buy groceries for himself afterwards and having to use some of your products.
like, surely he made a mental note five months ago to buy himself some body soap because he just ran out right before his deployment, or at least in his note app. oh, of course. his phone died and he forgot to charge it. well, you won't mind if he use yours, right? and maybe some shampoo too, he can't be walking around the house with greasy hair.
he returned late at night, stumbling into the flat you two shared with his stomach empty, greasy as hell and his soap bottle all empty in the bathroom. just his luck after getting into such a shitty mission.
when you woke up the next day, he was asleep on the couch, not wearing his balaclava and still have his towel around his neck. an empty tupperware on the coffee table (was it the other half of your burrito last night that you kept for today?), some beer (was it yours!?), and the tv being on.
somehow, his hair looked softer, so you ran your fingers through his hair instinctively. and goddammit it was so soft. it was unreal. how did he get his hair so soft with 5-in-1 bodywash!? unless...
ghost woke up from your constant yapping, yawning and rubbing his hair, unsure of what's such a big deal. it's just bodywash, right? and maybe a little bit of shampoo, your leftovers, and some of your beer. why are you so mad at him?
plus, now he smells just like you, had an indirect kiss with you from the burrito, so why should he be bothered that you're yelling at him?

Chapter 3 | Master List | Ao3
---------------------------------------
Chapter 4
A chiming sound echoed through your bedroom. Cracking one eye open, you reached for the phone and saw an alert from your smart doorbell sayings someone had just rung it. The app showed a live video of Jake standing outside of your apartment, arms clasped behind his back. Eyes flitting up to glance at the time, you groaned and turned on the mic. “What are you doing here?”
Jake bent and smiled at the camera. “Morning. Ready to go?”
“Go away,” you grumbled while unplugging the device and slipping out of bed. His answering laugh doubled, echoing through the speaker and from the front door as you neared. Closing the app, you set the phone on the coffee table while passing.
Last night, he’d teased you about how empty your refrigerator was - “looks like a college kid’s, just condiments and soda” - when he’d gotten the ketchup. You’d ordered him to shut the hell up and informed him it was grocery weekend. Without hesitation, he’d replied, “Fine, we’ll hit the store before getting the car.” No matter how much you tried to assure him that you would order a car to take you to get the rental your insurance was paying for, he wouldn’t take no for an answer. “Might as well use my truck for your shopping - you never know how big a vehicle they’ll give you.” He ignored you when you said you could have groceries delivered if that was an issue.
Jake heard the lock click, and the door cracked open. When it didn’t move further, he waited a moment before pushing it open and stepping inside. After relocking it and kicking off his shoes, he walked towards the kitchen to see you pouring a glass of water with your back to him. A smile tugged at his lips as his eyes swept over you, taking in your soft, sleep-rumpled appearance. When you opened a cabinet and pulled out a bottle of aspirin, he frowned. “How are you feeling this morning?”
“A bit sore,” you replied, washing down two pills and turning to see him sipping from a coffee cup on the other side of the kitchen island. Your eyes fell to an iced latte on the counter by his elbow and slowly rose to meet his gaze. The corners of his eyes crinkled at your confused look. With a wink, he set it in front of you and moved to sit on the couch, draping his arm across the back. The image of him sitting there - smiling at you in his casual t-shirt and jeans, coffee cup balancing on his thigh - made your breath catch. Leaving the water in favor of the latte, you made your way over and plucked the blanket off the cushions, pulling it over your shoulders to hide that you weren’t wearing a bra. Rather than retreating to your corner of the couch, you sat in the middle. A light touch caressed the back of your neck as you sipped the coffee.
“How’d you sleep?” After setting your cup on the table, you turned to face Jake, eyes narrowed. He raised an eyebrow, lifting his coffee to hide his smile. Shaking your head, you turned onto your side, back to him, and brought your knees to your chest.
“I’d still be sleeping if you knew how to tell time,” you mumbled, resting your head on the back cushion and closing your eyes. Chuckling low, he gently tugged a strand of your hair.
“Not a morning person, I take it.” Shaking off the blanket from your hand, you lifted your middle finger high enough for him to see and shushed him. There was movement, then he wrapped an arm around your chest and tugged you backward. Flailing at the unexpected pull, you drove an elbow into his stomach and heard him grunt. His chest hit your back as he curled over, shoving a hand between you to rub where you’d hit him.
Clapping a hand to your mouth to stifle a laugh, you turned to see Jake lift his head and playfully glare when he saw the tears glistening in your eyes, shoulder shaking with silent laughter. “Y-you okay?” you forced out between giggles.
“Anyone tell you that you’ve got bony elbows?”
“Suck it up, Mr. Six-Pack.”
“It’s Lieutenant Six-Pack. I could have you brought up on charges for damaging government property.”
“Poor baby, want me to kiss it better?” you teased without thinking. Grinning, Jake twisted to lean back onto the couch arm, bringing his leg up to rest beside you and lifting the hem of his shirt. Your eyes darted across his taut stomach, and heat rose in your face as you met his gaze. He raised an eyebrow in challenge. Lifting your chin, you shrugged off the blanket and turned to face him.
Brushing the hair from your face, you placed a hand on his shoulder and the other on his leg still resting on the floor. Your knees pressed into the couch as you straddled his thigh. Jake shifted, throat bobbing. Slowly, you lowered yourself to brush a featherlight kiss against his stomach once…twice…three times.
The muscles under your hand jumped, and you saw his cock twitch in his jeans. Looking up at him through your eyelashes, you saw his hands flexing, gripping his shirt and the couch to keep from touching you. The way he looked at you was dizzying - green eyes hazy with lust, tongue darting out to wet his lips. With a mocking look, you sat back onto your heels and cooed, “I hope that helps, Lieutenant. Wouldn’t want you out of commission because of my bony elbows.”
Jake’s eyes fell to your breasts, nipples pebbled under your thin shirt, and nodded. “Much obliged, Ma’am,” he replied, voice rough. Holding your gaze, he bent his leg, planted his foot on the couch, and tipped you forward. Your breath caught, arousal pooling in your lower stomach as your clothed core dragged along his thigh. Smiling, he dropped his shirt and released the couch. His left hand drifted to your knee, lightly dragging his fingers and slowly inching higher. His right hand covered your left, taking it from where it rested on his chest. Gently, he pulled you forward while extending your arm so it rested on the couch behind his head, bringing you face to face. Goosebumps rose as he trailed his fingers up and down your arm, curling his hand around your wrist and holding it in place as he brushed his lips across your skin. “Almost friendly of you.”
“Can’t have that,” you breathed, moving your right hand to his shoulder to steady yourself. His fingers slid under your shorts, and a calloused palm curled around your hip. Green eyes drifted across your face before focusing on your lips. His tongue darted out to wet his own, and you mirrored the action.
“Course not,” he agreed. Chest to chest, every inhale teased your nipples. The corners of his eyes crinkled as he leaned up to brush his nose against yours. To place a glancing kiss on your cheek. Your chin. Nudge your head back to press a line of open-mouthed kisses down your throat. Your breath quickened as he ran his tongue along your pulse point before blowing softly, making you shiver at the cool counterpoint. His hand left your arm to cup your jaw, his thumb brushing your lower lip. Guiding you closer, his lips hovered over yours. “We’re not friends,” he said, the warmth of his breath whispering over your skin.
Jake pulled away before you could close the distance between you. Smiling at your dazed expression, he stretched out his leg and tucked his arms behind his head. “You should go get ready - gotta get your shopping done.”
With shaky legs, you stood. His hand shot out to steady you, a smug smirk tugging on his lips.
If he wanted to tease, two could play that game.
Your eyes drifted down his body, lingering where his erection pressed against the fly of his jeans. The corner of your mouth tipped up, and he shifted under your gaze, hips lifting off the couch before settling again. Pressing your fingertips to his chest, you walked around the couch, trailing your fingers over his body. You lightly scratched the back of his neck, enjoying how he leaned into your touch. It was your turn to smirk as your hands rested on his shoulders. Thumbs lightly pressed into the muscles at the base of his neck, and he stiffened before relaxing into your gentle kneading.
“So tense,” you cooed, stepping close enough that his head rested against your stomach when it lulled back, eyes falling closed. “And you spent all day in the F-18 yesterday, didn’t you? I know those cockpits aren’t very comfortable, especially the ejection seat.” Slowly, you moved one hand from his shoulder, nails ghosting along the line of his collarbone before descending down his sternum. His pecs twitched. Bending, you pressed a kiss to the back of Jake’s neck. “Mmmh, and if your Environmental Conditioning System isn’t working?” Nudging his head to the side, you leaned forward to nip gently at his pulse point before soothing it with a kiss. With satisfaction, you watched his Adam’s apple bob. “With how warm it’s been, I imagine the cockpit gets very hot. Makes it hard to concentrate.” He caught your wandering hand as it reached his stomach.
“Just relax while I get ready. I’ll be quick.” When you tried to pull away from him, his grip tightened momentarily before releasing. Hands lightly pressed on his shoulders, you leaned close enough to whisper in his ear, “Don’t worry if you hear anything in the shower.”
He groaned loudly as you stepped away. Yours was muffled in the crook of your arm as the water rained overhead, coming harder than you had in a while.
An hour later, you sat in the truck’s passenger seat, stealing glimpses of Jake from behind your sunglasses. When you’d gotten out of the shower, he’d cast a few lingering glances your way and had definitely looked down your t-shirt when you'd bent to put on your shoes but had otherwise acted as though nothing happened. After handing you the watery iced coffee and confirming the store you wanted to go to - which you’d done with a single word - he’d towed you out of the apartment.
He drove with one hand casually holding the wheel while the other tapped the beat of a radio song on the shifter. Feeling your gaze, he asked, “What?”
“You’re a dick.” His laugh was loud in the cab as you crossed your arms.
“Feelin’ a bit frustrated, darlin’?” he asked, reaching over to place his hand on your jean-clad upper thigh. “Just gotta agree to a date, and I’d be happy to lend a hand.”
Blushing, you grabbed your coffee and mumbled, “No need - already took care of it.” Jake glanced over and dipped his chin so you could see his molten green eyes over the rim of his sunglasses, a smirk playing on his lips. With a sigh, you stretched across the center console to press a finger to his jaw, turning his attention back to the road. “Focus on driving, Seresin.”
“You’re making it pretty damn hard.”
“Pun intended?” you asked innocently, earning a groan in response as he squeezed your thigh. “I’m curious - do you get off on teasing women or something? Is that why they call you Hangman?”
“Not exactly. And you gave as good as you got. Better, actually, since it sounds like you had some fun in the shower.” Rather than reply, you pressed your lips together and tilted your head.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“What?”
“What’s wrong with you? What’s your damage?”
“Can’t just ask that and not expect a clarification.” Sighing, you dropped your head back onto the seat, knowing your next words would only serve to stroke his ego.
“I mean this in the least flattering way possible, but you’re nice, funny, have a good job, and are attractive,” you ticked off the characteristics on your hand. “You’re an actual good guy - so what’s the catch? Why are you still single?”
Rather than smirking and giving some sarcastic retort, Jake sighed. His grip on the wheel tightened before switching hands to rest his elbow on the door and run a hand through his hair. “I, uh… got divorced about two years ago. Haven’t really been looking to get into a relationship since then.”
“Oh.”
“It’s fine. It was over for a while, just took some time to file the paperwork.”
“Can I ask what happened?”
“Military life,” he shrugged. “We met at my first base, and it was fine when I was stationed there, but she… struggled when I deployed. And when I got orders out here… well, let’s just say she’s happier back in New Orleans.”
“I’m sorry, Jake.”
“It’s fine,” he repeated, then cleared his throat. “What about you? Why are you single?”
“Because men don’t like women who don’t need them, and I refuse to pretend I do.” That made him chuckle, and he glanced over as you shifted to face him. “I grew up in the military and watched my mom deal with my dad’s deployments. You can’t watch your mom basically be a single parent for a year at a time and not realize that you can’t lose yourself in a relationship and need the other person to be with you all the time.”
“Sounds like you’ve been dating boys, baby - not men.” After a moment, he asked, “Are your parents still together?”
“Thirty-nine years in March. Yours?”
“Yeah.” His jaw ticked, but he didn’t say anything more. You were quiet as he turned into the parking lot of the big box store and started to look for a spot. He finally pulled into one and turned off the ignition, letting his hand fall back to the shifter.
“Hey,” you said, placing your hand on his forearm and waiting for him to look at you. “Thanks for telling me.” Swallowing hard, Jake nodded. He’d known that telling anyone he was interested in about the divorce would be hard, but he hadn’t expected it this soon.
“Any failed marriages you want to share?” he asked after a moment. Smiling softly, you shook your head.
“Closest I got to the aisle was marrying my second-grade boyfriend at recess.” After a moment, you pushed your sunglasses to the top of your head and, hesitantly, reached over to take Jake’s off. His green eyes were guarded as they met yours. “Can I ask you a serious question?” When he nodded, you took and released a deep breath. “I don’t understand why you’re trying so hard.”
“You’re smart, funny, gorgeous, and make me laugh. Why wouldn’t I want to spend time with you?”
“You don’t know anything about me.” Chuckling, he shook his head.
“I know I’ve been out of the game for a while, but I thought that was the whole point of dating - getting to know someone.”
“How long?” At his questioning look, you clarified. “How long have you been out of the dating game?”
“Married at 25, separated at 30, divorce was finalized at 32.”
“And you haven’t dated anyone since then?”
“I…uh…” he said, reaching up to rub the back of his neck. “I’ve seen people, but not dated.” He admitted to your lack of reaction, “I’m trying to turn over a new leaf, and you’re making it very hard to stick to that.”
“I’m not judging you for having fun. But I’m not looking for casual.”
“Me either.”
Pinching the bridge of your nose, you murmured, “Please don’t make me regret this.”
“I will pay you to get this for me,” Jake said, holding up a container of protein powder. “It’s so much cheaper here.”
“I’ll send you the money for these. They’re the best snack in the cockpit,” he said, tossing a box of meal replacement bars into the cart.
“That’s a good deal… do you mind if I get these too?”
You couldn’t help but laugh. It had been a bit tense when you’d left the truck and awkward when he’d threaded your fingers together while walking through the parking lot. At the store entrance, he’d lifted your hand to press a kiss to the back before retrieving a cart. Once inside, he’d teased you at first about buying things in bulk but quickly matched you almost item for item in the cart. You remarked that he should buy a membership, to which he’d shrugged and said he could just come with you. Any time you reached for a heavy item, he nudged you out of the way to get it. You didn’t bother to hide your appreciation of his arms as he grabbed you a case of flavored water. He clearly noticed and flexed his biceps more than necessary.
Roaming the aisles, you asked one another questions. You found out that he had a younger sister, and he learned about your hobbies. He told you about falling in love with flying, and you told him about changing from engineering to English. He talked about attending the Naval Academy and graduating with a degree in physics. You playfully swatted him when he teased you about dodging the ‘Chair Force’ when you had mentioned almost joining the military.
Jake stopped the cart in the snack aisle and grabbed a huge container of animal crackers. Cocking an eyebrow, he asked in a horrible Australian accent, “North or south?”
A couple of hundred dollars later, you were back in the truck with his hand on your thigh as he drove back to your apartment. “I was a kid with a chip on my shoulder and something to prove,” he shrugged. “Made some choices and was an asshole, so that’s why they call me Hangman.”
“Are you still that kid?” you asked. He’d alluded throughout the day that he hadn’t had the best childhood but wouldn’t say anything directly.
“Am I still the same asshole I was at 23? I have my moments, but I hope not.”
“God, I can’t imagine getting stuck with a nickname that young for the rest of my life.”
“It’s grown on me,” he shrugged again. “Proved I’m one of the best pilots in the Navy, at least.” Taking your hand, he lifted it to brush his lips across your knuckles. “Hear it more than my own name, most of the time.”
“Oh yeah? Is that going to be the excuse when you ignore me calling your name?”
“You call me, darlin’, and I’ll answer to anything.”
“Asshole?” His laugh echoed in the cab.
Jake stood back as you circled the rental car to inspect for damages with the agent, noting the dings and dents. When the keys were handed over and the woman returned to the store, he stepped forward as you unlocked the car and opened the driver’s side door, creating a barrier between you. They’d given you a small sedan - definitely would have been big enough to do your shopping with, but you couldn’t bring yourself to regret spending the morning with him.
Crossing your arms over the top of the door, you smiled. “Thanks for everything today.”
“Thanks for helping me get my cardio in,” he replied. When bringing the groceries up to your apartment, he’d groaned about you living on the third floor, quipping that stairs weren’t his favorite form of cardio. You flushed, remembering how the morning had kicked off, shifting to ease the dull ache between your thighs at the memory of his lips caressing your skin. Of course, he caught the movement, and a smirk flitted across his mouth as he lifted a hand to cradle your jaw. His thumb swept across your cheek, nudging the frames of your sunglasses. “Lemme make you dinner.”
“You do realize how dangerous it is for a woman to go to a man’s house for a first date, right?”
“Good thing this wouldn’t be our first date.” You pulled away, his fingers trailing along your neck, and frowned.
“Pretty sure it would be.”
“Third - last night we had dinner and a movie, and we spent all day together today.”
“We are not counting last night as a date,” you scoffed.
“I had to sit through two of your Michael Bay movies. It counts.”
“You fell asleep during one of them!”
“So did you. Still counts.”
“Today was errands.”
“Ice cream date.”
“Wow, if you think grabbing an ice cream from a big box food court is a date, I really need to lower my standards.”
“Had to work with what you gave me. If you’d let me take you out the first time I asked - ”
“A napkin with your number is a really smooth way to do that, by the way.”
“Got us here, didn’t it?”
“Pretty sure it took vehicular destruction to get us here.” His smile broadened, lines bracketing his mouth and nose scrunching.
“You’re not gonna make things easy on me, are you?”
“Nope,” you replied, popping the ‘p.’ “Gotta keep that cocky pilot ego in check.”
His thumb swept across the curve of your lower lip. “Dinner?”
“I can’t - I have a lot of stuff I need to get done today.”
“Tomorrow?”
“You wanna spend the whole weekend with me, Seresin?” you teased.
“A hell of a lot more than a weekend,” he shrugged, gifting you with a soft smile. Something in your chest fluttered. Wordlessly, you nodded. “I’ll text you my address.”
“Make sure you clear out the other girls in the meantime.” Shaking his head, Jake leaned down to brush his lips across your forehead.
“New leaf, remember? Let me know when you get home. Drive safe.” Nodding, you ducked into the car and smiled at him as he closed the door for you. Rolling down the window, you rested your arm on the door and smirked.
“See you tomorrow, Seresin.”
“See you tomorrow, darlin’.”
-------------------------------------------
Author's Note: Jake, in my opinion, is definitely a relationship guy. He's not opposed to casual but prefers to have a partner - which is why I think he would have done the typical military thing and married young. A lot of this story is pulling from my own experiences growing up as a military brat, having close friends and a long history of family members in the military, and now working with veterans.
Yes, there are fuck boys who enjoy messing around, but loneliness is a huge issue on both the soldier and family side. Soldiers marry young for the benefit (Tricare is not that great but the increase in housing allowance and getting to move out of the dorms is a draw), but also so they have some stability when they get orders every few years to relocate. Divorce is pretty common, though, and higher in the military than in the civilian world. It is really hard on the soldier and spouse to be separated for deployments, adjust when they get back, have little control over your life, and often times move away from your family and support network for the first time. Add kids to the mix? Even harder. So... yeah... that's why I think that Jake's a relationship guy.
(Forgot to add that Chair Force is what a majority of the other military branches call the Air Force because they tend to have better accommodations and deployments. My dad jokes about how they were able to rig up an air conditioned tent while the Army guys sweltered in the Middle East during a deployment.)

Case Study: Successful Implementation of All-In Delivery in Retail
In today’s fast-paced world, convenience is king, and retail businesses are finding innovative ways to meet the growing demand for fast, reliable delivery services. One such approach is the use of an All in one delivery app script, which consolidates various delivery functions into a single platform. This case study explores how a retail business successfully implemented an all-in delivery solution to streamline its operations and boost customer satisfaction.
The Challenge: Managing Multiple Delivery Channels
The retail industry has seen a significant rise in e-commerce, leading to an increased demand for efficient delivery services. However, managing different delivery channels—such as groceries, electronics, and clothing—can be a logistical nightmare. Before implementing an all-in-one solution, this retail business faced several challenges:
High operational costs: Managing separate systems for different product categories increased labor and technology expenses.
Delayed deliveries: Lack of a unified platform caused frequent delays, negatively impacting customer satisfaction.
Inefficient order tracking: With separate tracking systems for different products, customers struggled to monitor their orders in real-time.
These issues highlighted the need for a centralized solution that could streamline multiple delivery channels under one platform.
The Solution: All-In-One Delivery App Script
To address these challenges, the company decided to implement an all in one delivery app script. This powerful software integrates all delivery operations, allowing the business to manage diverse product deliveries through a single interface. The app script provided:
Unified management of deliveries: From groceries to electronics, all products were managed within a single platform, making it easier to track orders and reduce delivery times.
Real-time order tracking: Customers could now track their orders in real-time, enhancing the overall customer experience.
Cost efficiency: The consolidation of delivery channels reduced operational costs by eliminating the need for multiple platforms and systems.
Scalability: As the business grew, the app script easily adapted to new products and services, making it a future-proof solution.
The Implementation Process
Implementing an all in one delivery app script requires careful planning and execution. The retail business worked closely with a tech partner to ensure seamless integration. Below are the key steps they followed:
1. Assessing Business Needs
The company first conducted a thorough analysis of its existing delivery systems, identifying the inefficiencies and pain points. This helped them decide on the specific features and functionalities needed in the app script.
2. Customizing the App Script
One of the significant benefits of an all-in-one delivery app script is its ability to be customized. The business tailored the script to suit its unique requirements, incorporating specific features like multiple payment gateways, real-time notifications, and an easy-to-use dashboard for managing orders.
3. Training the Staff
Before the app’s full deployment, the business ensured that its employees were adequately trained to handle the new system. This involved a series of workshops and training sessions that helped the team understand the new delivery process and troubleshoot any issues.
4. Testing and Feedback
Before going live, the app script underwent rigorous testing to identify any potential bugs or glitches. The business also collected feedback from a select group of customers during the soft launch to make necessary improvements.
5. Full Launch and Continuous Monitoring
After successful testing, the app was rolled out across the company’s entire delivery network. Continuous monitoring helped ensure that the platform operated smoothly, and any issues were quickly resolved.
The Results: Boost in Efficiency and Customer Satisfaction
The implementation of the all in one delivery app script delivered immediate and long-term benefits for the retail business:
Reduced delivery times: With a unified system in place, delivery times were cut down by 25%, leading to faster service.
Enhanced customer experience: The real-time tracking feature and improved delivery coordination resulted in a 30% increase in customer satisfaction ratings.
Lower operational costs: By consolidating delivery platforms, the company reduced its operating costs by 20%, freeing up resources for other strategic investments.
Improved scalability: The business was able to expand its product offerings without additional strain on its delivery system, thanks to the flexible nature of the app script.
Conclusion:
The successful implementation of an all in one delivery app script in retail highlights the power of having a consolidated solution for managing deliveries. If you're looking to streamline your retail or delivery business operations, an all-in-one solution can significantly reduce costs, enhance customer satisfaction, and improve overall efficiency.

D-Day by TrickPhotography | Chapter 3
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jake "Hangman" Seresin x female!reader
Word count: 4.5k
Synopsis: After finding out his girlfriend is pregnant, Jake is ready to move in and get married. The last thing he expected was to be hit with a six-month deployment at sea and missing the birth of his first child.
Chapter 2 | Master List | Ao3
---------------------------------------
Chapter 3
“You have got to be kidding me,” you grumbled while lying in bed looking at your phone. There, staring back at you, was Jake freaking Seresin with the words ‘Most Compatible: We think you and Jake should meet!’ appearing over his head. Apparently, the dating app algorithm thought you two had something in common.
Against your better judgment, you tapped on his profile and scrolled through his pictures. Pretty standard - a couple of selfies, a group shot with some guys drinking in their dress whites, and a few at the beach and bar. The obligatory shot of him flexing in the mirror… you may have lingered on that one for a minute. For his job, he’d put military aviation, but there wasn’t any other mention of him being a pilot. One of the prompts he’d answered was a friend’s endorsement, which said, “He’s kind of an asshole but a good guy.”
Scrolling back up, you paused at the picture of him smiling down at the camera in his car, hair rumpled and the collar of his flight suit bringing out the green of his tired eyes. When you tapped on it to see the caption, he’d written, ‘Morning after a long night at work.’ The corner of your lip twitched into a smile. Jake was objectively attractive, but that soft look was adorable.
When the screen dimmed, you realized you’d been staring at the picture too long. Sighing, you tapped it and hovered your finger over the dislike button. But you couldn’t bring yourself to hit it. Instead, you closed the app and locked your phone, tossing it onto the nightstand. The algorithm would pick another Most Compatible for you tomorrow, and Jake’s profile would disappear. Rolling onto your side and hugging your pillow, you forced yourself not to think about the jolt you’d felt at the coffee shop when he’d leaned close, his breath on your neck… Your fingers curled in the sheets to keep from reaching for the phone again.
Across town, Jake lounged on his couch, one arm behind his head and smiling as he looked at a picture of you. You were driving a convertible by the beach, one hand buried in your hair to keep it from your face with the most carefree smile he’d seen. For the description, you’d written, ‘Hair by Mustang.’ After liking your profile, he locked his phone and set it on his stomach, turning his attention back to the nightly sports recap.
Friday afternoon traffic was the worst, you decided while waiting at another red light. Usually, you could avoid most of it by jumping on the highway, but you’d run out of coffee creamer that morning. It was grocery shopping weekend, and you had a list of things to get from multiple places, but creamer was an absolute necessity to kick off the process tomorrow morning.
A quick run into the store, a shower, and sitting on your couch with a pint of ice cream were in your immediate future. It had been a spectacularly shitty week at work. In a moment of anger, after a higher-up “helped you out” by explaining the details of a contract bid you’d written, you’d applied for a government contractor job on Lemoore. It was a long shot, and the money wasn’t as good as the private sector, but at least it would be somewhere new. And this afternoon, you’d taken advantage of the office gym and spent the last hour of your day running on the treadmill with the music high enough to drown out the others working out. Even with your eyes straight ahead, you’d caught a few of the guys checking you out in the mirror. Thankfully none had said anything to you - apparently, they caught the ‘don’t fuck with me’ attitude.
It was the first time you truly regretted taking a transfer out here. Things had been okay in Florida - you’d only been six hours from your parents and had a good network of college friends living nearby. A year after moving to California, you felt more isolated than ever. You weren’t sure the promotion had been worth it.
So yeah, maybe some alcohol would be thrown in for good measure.
Jake lifted his hand and nodded at the driver he walked in front of. The woman waved in acknowledgment - not that she could have moved anyways. The turn out of the parking lot to reach the light was already fifteen cars deep, and the light was backed up half a mile. The madhouse of the civilian store made him regret not hitting the Exchange before leaving the base, but this store was closer to the gate he lived off of. All he wanted was to head home, shower, and figure out something for dinner. He’d been up in the air all day and was hungry and tired.
He’d just reached his truck when he heard an engine gun it. Frowning, he looked up to see what idiot was speeding in a parking lot. A second later, breaks screamed, and there was the unmistakable sound of a car crash. Standing on his toes, he saw it’d happened two rows over. For a moment, he debated driving away but then heard a door slam and someone start yelling. “What the fuck! You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!” Sighing, Jake tossed his bag into the truck bed and jogged towards the accident. Up close, he could see that a lifted truck had collided head-on with a sedan, which was pinned bumper to bumper with the truck and an SUV behind it. The sedan’s hood was crumpled, and it looked like the airbags had deployed. The truck driver was yelling by the sedan’s passenger side, gesturing at his vehicle. The SUV driver - a woman - hopped out and walked along the car, screaming at the truck driver that he’d been going the wrong way.
More people were congregating, and a few guys were trying to get the truck driver to calm down while at least two people were on the phone with who he hoped was the police. A woman was leaning over the sedan’s driver's side. “They okay?” Jake asked as he drew near.
“I think so. She looks shaken up, though,” the woman replied. He nodded, and his heart stopped when she stepped away for him to look.
You were struggling with your seatbelt, hands shaking too hard to press the release. It had locked up when the truck hit you and tightened even more when you’d been pushed back into the other car.
A pounding sound broke through the ringing in your ears, and you turned to see Jake outside your window, fist resting against the glass. His lips moved as he pointed at the door. When you froze, he removed his sunglasses and clipped them to his flight suit. His green eyes were hard as they bore into yours as he repeated something and pointed at the door again. Finally, his voice broke through the fog as he gestured. “Unlock it!” As soon as you pulled the handle, Jake ripped open the door and pushed down the deflating airbag. “You okay?” he demanded, leaning across to put the car in park and turn off the engine.
“He was going the wrong way.”
“I know, darlin’. Are you okay?” Kneeling on the car door sill, steering wheel digging into his back, he reached up to brush the hair from your face and tuck it behind your ear. His eyes bore into yours, “You hit your head? Neck okay?”
“I’m fine. I just wanna get out of here,” you said, a hint of panic creeping into your voice while tugging at the seatbelt again. His angry expression softened, and he leaned to look at the side of the seat. Shifting, he reached between your legs and pulled the lever to move your seat back. Brushing your shaking hand away, he hit the belt release and held it away as it retracted. Lightly, he ran a finger along your neck where the seatbelt had bit into your skin, checking for blood. “You hurt anywhere else?”
“No.” There was a wail of sirens in the distance as Jake helped you out of the car. His eyes swept over you, and he gently took your wrists, bringing them up to inspect the irritated skin - the airbag had dragged over your forearms when it deployed. “I’m fine.” His lips were pressed into a thin line when he met your gaze. Taking half a step forward, he tucked you into his chest and wrapped his arms around you tightly. Releasing a shuddering breath, you allowed yourself to sink into him momentarily, fingers digging into the rough texture of his flight suit. The scent of sweat and jet fuel overwhelmed your senses, and you started to shake with an effort not to cry. Jake tightened his hold.
“Is your… uh… is she okay?” a bystander asked.
“She’s good. They okay?”
“Mom and kids are fine. Guy’s got a couple of cuts but seems to be okay. Cops are gonna be here in a second, and they’re sending an ambulance to check everyone out.” When Jake shook the bystander’s hand you took advantage of his loosened grip to slip out of his arms.
“Fuck,” you breathed, turning to see what the car looked like. The hood was crumpled, the bumper hanging off, and plastic and metal shards littered the ground. Jake followed as you walked to the back of the car to inspect the damage - the bumper and back panel were dented. Squeezing your eyes closed, you bit your lower lip and let out a shaky breath. “I just fucking paid this off,” you said, hating how your voice wobbled. Something brushed your fingers, and you looked down to see Jake’s hand squeeze yours before letting go. Slowly, you look up at him and shook your head. “What are you even doing here?”
“Whatever you need.” At your silence, he shrugged. “I ran out of deodorant.” The unexpected answer startled a laugh out of you, and a few tears escaped. Mortified, you quickly brushed them away and sniffled. He moved as though to reach for you but checked the instinct, clenching his fists instead.
“Thanks for… that,” you said, motioning to your open car door. “But don’t feel like you have to stay. I have a feeling this is going to take a while.”
“I got nothin’ but time,” he replied, looking over your shoulder to where two police cars had pulled up.
“I’m going to get an Uber. Thanks for hanging out with me,” you sighed two hours later, watching the tow truck drive away. Overhead, the parking lot lamps flickered on. True to his word, Jake had stayed through the whole ordeal, taking pictures of everything for the insurance claim while the EMTs checked you over. Other than the minor contact burns, they gave you a clean bill of health.
“I can take you home.”
“You’ve already done more than enough, Jake. Go enjoy your Friday night. Please. Someone should.” The original plan of ice cream and alcohol was mentally swapped out for a hot shower and aspirin - your body was already starting to ache from the accident, and you were exhausted.
“It's getting dark and it’s gonna take another thirty minutes to get a car. I’m parked right over there. Either way, I’m not leaving until you do, so let’s go.”
“My parents told me not to get in cars with strangers,” you deadpanned.
“I’m less of a stranger than some rideshare driver.” When you shook your head, he sighed, unzipped his pocket, and withdrew his wallet, handing you his driver’s license. Without another word, he turned and walked away, your work bag dangling from his shoulder, leaving you no option but to follow. Arms crossed, he stood in front of the open passenger side door as you reached his truck. “Well? Am I still a stranger?”
“A little bit less of one, Jacob Michael Seresin of Texas.” Holding out his license, you gave him a saccharine smile. “A piece of friendly advice? Don’t do the buzzcut again.”
Smirking, he took it and slipped it back into his pocket. “Thought we weren’t friends.”
“We’re not.” His laugh was warm in your ear as he shut the door behind you and walked to the driver’s side, pausing to grab his deodorant from the truck bed and toss both bags into the back seat. Through the window, he watched you rub your neck and grimace. After settling into the driver’s seat, he hit the ignition switch. Country music blasted from the stereo, and he quickly turned it down and switched on your seat warmers before nodding towards the GPS.
“Put your address in.”
“You’re not going to use it to stalk me, are you?” you asked, stifling a yawn. “This feels like it could be the beginning of a 20/20 episode about how I mysteriously disappeared from a parking lot after being seen getting into a car with a military pilot.”
“Sweetheart, if I wanted to make you disappear, you think I’d have signed paperwork with the police for your accident and then have you get in my car in a parking lot covered with cameras?”
Narrowing your eyes, you paused with your fingers hovering over the screen. “I feel like you were a bit too quick with that answer.”
“I didn’t get to be one of the best aviators in the country because of my looks.”
“Are you trying to tell me there’s a brain in that pretty head?” Grinning, he shifted in his seat to face you.
“You sayin’ you think I’m pretty?” Rolling your eyes, you typed in your address and pointedly ignored his laugh. It took only a few minutes to get out of the parking lot. Once out onto the main drag, you groaned, head falling back into the seat. He glanced over, raising an eyebrow, “What?”
“I just realized that I didn’t get my coffee creamer.”
“Want me to turn around?”
“No. I just wanna get home. This day needs to be over already,” you muttered.
“Something happen? Other than the accident?”
“Ignore me, I’m just tired,” you replied, pasting on your customer service smile. And you were. So bone tired of dealing with work and being alone, and now whatever it was going to take to get your car fixed.
“Wanna talk about it?” Blowing out a breath through pursed lips, you turned away from him, propping your elbow up on the door to subtly brush away a few stray tears.
“Nothing to talk about.” The hand draped over the shifter moved towards you before he pulled back, tightening his grip on the wheel. The air in the cab suddenly felt too stifling. You cracked the window, needing a shot of fresh air.
“Didn’t realize I smelled that bad,” Jake said, trying to lighten the mood. When you apologized and reached for the button to roll it up, he used the controls on his side to lower both windows. The wind tugged at your hair, and you reached up to smooth it into a ponytail, twisting it into a knot. Without a hair tie, you leaned back in the seat to hold it in place and closed your eyes, arms crossed over your chest. The cool night air washed over you, a pleasant counterpoint to the seat warmers soothing your sore muscles. When the radio volume lowered, you sighed.
“You don’t have to turn down the music of your people.” He chuckled but didn’t adjust it. The soft sound of him humming and his fingers tapping on the wheel lulled you into a light doze, and you woke as the truck slowed. But rather than being at the entrance to your apartment complex, Jake was pulling into a fast food place. He looked over at you as you sat up, hair uncoiling on your shoulder.
“I’m starving and I’m guessing you haven’t eaten anything either.” Your stomach rumbled at the thought of food, making him grin. After ignoring your request for a separate order, he waved off your attempt to pay. Once back on the road, you opened the bag and pulled out a fry. He glanced over when you took a bite, and you saw a slight tick of his jaw.
“Want one?” you offered.
“No, I’ll wait.” When you snuck another fry, there was another jaw tick.
“Jake, do you not want me to eat in your car?”
“It’s fine.” Smirking, you reached into the bag and retrieved a napkin to wipe your fingers.
“You’re one of those guys, aren’t you?” He gave you a confused look. “No empty straw wrappers or loose change rattling around, carpets look pretty clean, and - ” you reached up to tap the decal hanging from the rearview mirror for the local car wash. “You’re a neat freak, aren’t you, Jake Seresin?”
“Nothing wrong with that,” he replied.
“Of course not. I bet you even make your bed in the morning with hospital corners and everything.” When he glanced at you, you laughed. “You do, don’t you! Do you iron your socks?”
“No. Boxer briefs, though…” he shot you a sly grin.
“Tell me you’re joking.” Knowing you’d left yourself open for a retort about checking, you cut him off when he opened his mouth. “How do you survive road trips? Road snacks are the best part!”
“Alright, alright, give me a fry,” he grumbled, reaching for the bag in your lap as he stopped at a red light. You held it out of his reach.
“Are you sure you want to come to the dark side of people that eat in their cars? Once you start, it’s impossible to go back. Fries are just the gateway food. Next thing you know, you’ll be eating chips and burgers, and - ” you let out a fake gasp - “dipping sauces.”
“Give me a damn fry.” Laughing, you plucked one from the bag and held it out to him.
“You’re life is about to get so much better, Seresin. You have no idea what kind of world you’re opening up for yourself.” Rather than take it, he pulled your hand closer. Holding your gaze, he lowered his mouth, teeth grazing your skin as he plucked the fry from your fingers. Heat blazed across your face, and you inhaled sharply. Jake’s smirk was sinful as he tugged your hand closer, lips parting to wrap around -
A car honked, and you ripped your hand out of Jake’s grasp, turning to look at the green light.
You drove in silence and then he groaned. “Damn it. Give me the fries.”
Your hand rested on the handle of your apartment door, Jake a solid presence at your back. He’d insisted on walking you up so you wouldn’t have to juggle your food, drink, and bag while unlocking the door. You’d ignored that he’d grabbed his drink as well. “Everything alright?” he asked when you didn’t move to go inside.
Steeling your shoulders, you turned to face him. “I, um… I clean on the weekends.” One eyebrow rose, and he fought a smile.
“Are you trying to warn me that your place is a mess after making fun of me for being a neat freak?”
“It’s not a mess; it’s just messy. There’s a difference.” Leaning against the wall next to your door, he motioned for you to explain. “You could currently describe my apartment as messy, but it’s not always that way - it’s not a quality of how I live. Adjective verses noun.” Laughing, he shook his head.
“Alright, Ms. English Degree, I promise I won’t judge you too hard.”
“Thank you,” you replied primly. With a sigh, you pushed open the door and flipped on the light, pausing to toe-off your shoes once inside.
“Here you had me thinking you were a hoarder or something,” Jake said, stepping in behind you and locking the door. His eyes darted around the room, taking in the stack of books on the coffee table, papers on the kitchen island, jackets thrown on a chair, and a pillow and blanket on the couch.
“Messy, not a mess.” Taking your bag from him, you dropped it on the chair and walked to the kitchen, flicking on a light. When you turned, Jake was crouched, unlacing his boots by the door. Smiling to yourself, you pulled two plates from the cabinet, grimacing slightly at the stack of dirty dishes in the sink.
“Make sure you divide those bag fries evenly,” he smirked, dropping the food on the island and leaning forward with his elbows resting on some unopened mail. Matching his posture, you narrowed your eyes.
“I’m pretty sure you ate all your fries in the car.”
“I don’t get any extra for delivering you home safe and sound?”
“So you’re asking for a reward for being a gentleman?”
“Somethin’ like that.”
“Will my undying gratitude suffice?”
“It’s a start.” Rolling your eyes, you stood up straight. If he wanted to tease, two could play that game. Grasping the hem of your shirt, you pulled it over your head, leaving you in your sports bra and leggings. Jake straightened, his green eyes darkening.
“I need a shower,” you explained, walking towards your bedroom. Pausing at your door to see his conflicted look, unsure if it was an invitation to join, you smirked. “Ketchup is in the fridge if you need it.”
As you shut the door, he mumbled, “Fuck.”
Choosing to forgo washing your hair to finish faster, you quickly showered and changed into a tank top and sleep shorts. You’d half expected Jake to knock on the bathroom door the whole time. Instead, he was sitting on the couch when you exited your room. He’d taken the opportunity to get comfortable, unzipping the top half of his flight suit and tying it around his waist. His black t-shirt clung to his chest and arms, and his hair was slightly mussed as though he’d run a hand through it a few times.
“You didn’t have to wait for me,” you said, motioning to his untouched plate on the coffee table. Yours sat beside it, and he’d even put the drinks on coasters.
“I always wait for my partner. It’s better to do it together.” The double entendre was clear as his eyes swept down your figure. Raising an eyebrow, you stepped between his spread knees to get to the other side of the couch and grabbed your drink, biting the tip of the straw as you curled in the corner and pulled your knees to your chest. “You gonna stay over there all night?” he asked, voice low as he smirked.
“Yup. And you’re gonna stay over there.”
“I am?”
“Yup. Because you’re a gentleman who drove me home after a car accident.” Some of the heat drained from his gaze as his eyes drifted to the red wound on your neck. His Adam’s apple bobbed when you stretched out a leg to nudge his thigh. “Right?”
“Right.”
“So we’re going to eat dinner, watch something on TV, and then you’ll head home.”
“Still not friends.”
“Still not friends.”
“The gazelle now faces man’s most perilous question - north?” Ben Affleck said in a horrible Australian accent while moving an animal cracker across Liv Tyler’s stomach. “South…way down south? Tune in next week.”
“Baby, do you think it’s possible that anyone else in the world is doing this very same thing at this very same moment?” she asked.
“I hope so. Otherwise, what the hell are we trying to save?”
“Damn, and people used to think that was romantic,” Jake groaned.
“Shut up and watch the movie.”
“He didn’t even take the animal cracker out of her underwear before he - ”
“It’s a movie.”
“It’s a horrible movie.”
“I didn’t say it was a cinematic masterpiece, I said it was a comfort movie.”
“You need better comfort movies. Something not by Michael Bay.” Looking up from the pillow, you scowled and tapped his thigh with your toe. His hand shot out to pin your ankle down as you crossed the invisible line dividing the couch in two, raising an eyebrow.
“What would you say if I told you that I really enjoyed Pearl Harbor?” Head falling back against the cushion, Jake swept his free hand down his face, palm rasping on his stubble.
“Jesus Christ.”
“Come on! That one has to be a little bit better. It’s about pilots and World War II and a really heartbreaking love triangle. Oh! And the part about launching planes off of carriers at the end.”
“I’m sure they did the Doolittle Raid very realistically.”
“So what I’m hearing is a double feature with Armageddon and Pearl Harbor.” Shaking his head, he ran a finger along the bottom of your foot, holding on tightly when you shrieked and tried to pull away. The effort nearly got him kicked in the face as you tried to wiggle away from him, but he didn’t stop laughing.
The music swelling woke Jake, and he sat up to see Pearl Harbor’s film credits rolling. Yawning, he looked over to see you lying on your side, hugging your pillow with one hand curled by your face and the other dangling off the couch, fast asleep. For a moment, he debated stretching out behind you and closing his eyes but pushed that thought away. He needed a shower, and you needed to not sleep on the couch tonight. A glance at his watch showed that it was just after two in the morning. Carefully, he lifted your feet from his lap and stood to stretch. After putting the dirty cups by the sink, he laced up his boots and grabbed his phone.
Kneeling beside you, Jake brushed the hair from your face before lifting your hand from the pillow and squeezing it gently. When you didn't move, he swept his thumb over your knuckles. “Darlin’, wake up.” He smiled when you hummed, eyebrows furrowing as you fought waking up. “I know. You can go back to sleep once you lock the door. Come on, open those pretty eyes.”
“Just stay,” you mumbled. Chuckling, he brushed his lips over the back of your hand and squeezed again.
“I’ll be back in a bit. Go sleep in your bed - you’ll be more comfortable.” Reluctantly, you opened one eye. “There she is.” Groaning, you sat up and let him pull you to your feet. Half asleep, you followed him to the door and, when he turned to say goodbye, leaned forward to rest your head on his chest.
“Thanks for everything,” you yawned as Jake wrapped his arms around you.
“Course. Happy I was there to help.”
“Text me when you get home.”
“Good thing I saved your number.” When you lifted your head, you saw him smiling softly at you. He could see that you were trying to come up with some comeback and shook his head. Leaning down, he pressed his lips to your forehead. “Goodnight. I’ll see you in the morning. Lock the door behind me.”
He waited outside until he heard the lock click. Twenty minutes after you climbed into bed, your phone lit up with a text that said, ‘Home. Sweet dreams.’
When he got out of the shower, Jake saw your response and smiled. 'Night, not friend.'
