How to make your writing sound less stiff
Just a few suggestions. You shouldnât have to compromise your writing style and voice with any of these, and some situations and scenes might demand some stiff or jerky writing to better convey emotion and immersion. I am not the first to come up with these, just circulating them again.
1. Vary sentence structure.
This is an example paragraph. You might see this generated from AI. I canât help but read this in a robotic voice. Itâs very flat and undynamic. No matter what the words are, it will be boring. Itâs boring because you donât think in stiff sentences. Comedians donât tell jokes in stiff sentences. We donât tell campfire stories in stiff sentences. These often lack flow between points, too.
So funnily enough, I had to sit through 87k words of a âromanceâ written just like this. It was stiff, janky, and very unpoetic. Which is fine, the author didnât tell me it was erotica. It just felt like an old lady narrator, like Old Rose from Titanic telling the audience decades after the fact instead of living it right in the moment. It was in first person pov, too, which just made it worse. To be able to write something so explicit and yet so un-titillating was a talent. Like, beginner fanfic smut writers at least do it with enthusiasm.
2. Vary dialogue tag placement
You got three options, pre-, mid-, and post-tags.
Leader said, âthis is a pre-dialogue tag.â
âThis,â Lancer said, âis a mid-dialogue tag.â
âThis is a post-dialogue tag,â Heart said.
Pre and Post have about the same effect but mid-tags do a lot of heavy lifting.
They help break up long paragraphs of dialogue that are jank to look at
They give you pauses for ~dramatic effect~
They prompt you to provide some other action, introspection, or scene descriptor with the tag. *don't forget that if you're continuing the sentence as if the tag wasn't there, not to capitalize the first word after the tag. Capitalize if the tag breaks up two complete sentences, not if it interrupts a single sentence.
It also looks better along the lefthand margin when you donât start every paragraph with either the same character name, the same pronouns, or the same â as it reads more natural and organic.
3. When the scene demands, get dynamic
General rule of thumb is that action scenes demand quick exchanges, short paragraphs, and very lean descriptors. Action scenes are where you put your juicy verbs to use and cut as many adverbs as you can. But regardless of if youâre in first person, second person, or third person limited, you can let the mood of the narrator bleed out into their narration.
Like, in horror, you can use a lot of onomatopoeia.
Drip Drip Drip
Or let the narration become jerky and unfocused and less strict in punctuation and maybe even a couple run-on sentences as your character struggles to think or catch their breath and is getting very overwhelmed.
You can toss out some grammar rules, too and get more poetic.
Warm breath tickles the back of her neck. It rattles, a quiet, soggy, rasp. She shivers. If she doesnât look, itâs not there. If she doesnât look, itâs not there. Sweat beads at her temple. Her heart thunders in her chest. Ba-bump-ba-bump-ba-bump-ba- It moves on, leaving a void of cold behind. She uncurls her fists, fingers achy and palms stinging from her nails. Itâs gone.
4. Remember to balance dialogue, monologue, introspection, action, and descriptors.
The amount of times I have been faced with giant blocks of dialogue with zero tags, zero emotions, just speech on a page like theyâre notecards to be read on a stage is higher than I expected. Donât forget that though you may know exactly how your dialogue sounds in your head, your readers donât. They need dialogue tags to pick up on things like tone, specifically for sarcasm and sincerity, whether a character is joking or hurt or happy.
If youâve written a block of text (usually exposition or backstory stuff) thatâs longer than 50 words, figure out a way to trim it. No matter what, break it up into multiple sections and fill in those breaks with important narrative that reflects the narratorâs feelings on what theyâre saying and whoever theyâre speaking toâs reaction to the words being said. Otherwise itâs meaningless.

Hope this helps anyone struggling! Now get writing.

One thing I find weird (in regards to larry) is how Liam said in an interview that he hadnât spoken to Harry in three years. Especially since he and Louis seemed to keep regular contact? Like, I just find it difficult to understand how that couldâve come to be in that context? Iâm just wondering what your thoughts on that situation is, if you donât mind sharing them. Iâm an (old) larrie myself, Iâve been here through most of it, but these are the kind of things I struggle with - more so than dating stunts etc. I have been abscent from tumblr a lot over the last few years, so I werenât around when he said it.
Anon, I really appreciate skepticism, it means you're thinking critically, and Iâll always support that. Itâs not my job to change your mind, but you can't have double standards if you're going to analyze things this way, real-life context matters.
Iâve never really understood why people expect celebrity relationships (especially ones like this) to follow some predictable pattern when real-life relationships do not. Thereâs this idea that if Louis and Harry are together, they have to always be in touch with the same people. But is that how relationships actually work? Life happens... careers, obligations, and different social circles pull people in different directions. Some friendships fade, some stay strong, and some people just arenât big on keeping in touch, even if theyâre close.
Whatâs funny is that people donât apply this same logic to other celebrity couples. If they arenât constantly seen with mutual friends, no one automatically assumes theyâve broken up or that their relationship is fake. But with larry, people need that confirmation to believe itâs real... when ironically, not following a perfect script actually makes it feel more real.

Maybe 2025 is when I finally watch Dr. Who. Although it's a little intimidating and I don't know where to start. Both in terms of where does one watch Dr. Who anyway, and where in the vast continuum of Dr. Who does one begin watching. So, any tips would help...

Closed Practices
Please make sure that you do additional research, this post is just the basics of closed practices! - if you arent part of the culture that practices or you arent invited to practice a practice listed, then dont practice it! - it is not for you and can be considered cultural appropriation
What is a closed practice? There have been many damaging misconceptions regarding what constituted a "closed practice" in spirituality. Simply described, a closed practice in witchcraft and the occult is one in which you can only participate if you were born into it or underwent an initiation procedure. One of the most popular misconceptions about closed practices is that if you were not born into the group, you would never be allowed to practise. This can be true in a number of situations, but there are certain exceptions. It is critical to remember that these practices remain locked until the individual has been verified and the authorised start process has been completed.
There is always a cause for some religions to be closed. Some reasons may include that it is founded on specific cultural values and beliefs that would never be understood by outsiders who were not truly immersed in the community. BrujerĂa and SanterĂa are examples of this.Â
Closed Communities and Race Locked Spirituality:Â Â
While it is critical to analyze specific practices within some religions, it is even more vital to address, on a larger scale, how entire communities can be closed. Differentiating between closed communities and closed practices reduces the likelihood of gatekeeping and reinforced marginalization. Some closed communities include the Amish, the Roma, Judaism (along with their type of mysticism, Kabbalah), Hoodoo, and Haitian Vodou. A reason a variety of communities may close their practices is that they are deemed as ârace lockedâ, indicating that these communities were created as an attempt to unify together during times of hardship, with their beliefs formed around their shared experiences.Â
Region Locked religion: While some religions are closed because they are "race locked," others are closed because they are "region locked". This indicates they are closed since they are based on variables unique to the place. Many of these numbers are based on local factors that would make little sense to someone from another place. This is why some (but not all!) minor ShintĹ sects are considered closed.Â
Poached practices:
Because of the huge quantity of misinformation propagated by uneducated internet users, there has been a significant surge in Native cultural appropriation and improper usage of Indigenous spirituality. There are other holy Indigenous rituals that are considered closed, like white sage smudging and the usage of palo santo. To survive, marginalised groups were traditionally mistreated and even punished for their beliefs, therefore these communities had to keep their religion hidden from outsiders. As restricted practices such as smudging gain popularity, the quantity of holy plants intended for Indigenous groups gets depleted. The colonizer's economic gains harm not just the environment, but also the purity of Native practices. Exploring safe, effective, and courteous alternatives to smoke cleaning are an excellent method to express direct gratitude to people who sacrificed their livelihood for spiritual freedom
Closed cultures:
Many Native American cultures
Many African cultures
Saami (in Finland)
Closed religions:
Shinto (Some branches of Shinto practice are open, although they should be approached with caution, while some are completely closed. Jinja Shinto would be the most visible example of an open denomination.
Druidism (proper not neo)
Gardnerian and Alexandrian Wicca
Haitian Vodou
Hawaiian
 African Vodou
Hinduism (There are open and accessible Hindu denominations, as well as closed sects. Some "open sects" are quite troublesome, thus one should proceed with caution when considering joining a Hindu sect. Dharmic law is part of what makes this difficult to traverse, so proceed with caution.
Hopi
Inuit
Judaism (You must earn the right to be called Jewish)
Raastafari Movement
Tribal (almost all)
Voodoo (Dependent on the group which you decide to learn from)Â
Voudon
Zoroastrianism *some of these you can be invited to practice, but please research into which ones you can and can't. I as the author do not know much about these practices, as I don't personally practice them. People who do practices will have more correct answers*

Any recommendations for beginners? I recently binged seasons 1 and 2 and I'm looking for fic recs. I typically use ao3 but other sites are fine. I looking for something to ease myself into this fandom, so possibly canon compliant and fluffy.
Yes @prettypunkgeek , we have some suggestions for you. We got the most famous ones (however some of the most famous are Human AU, which we avoided. But if you want to know some of them, just ask us). Another thing that was avoided were 18+ fics, the ones in the list were mostly Teen and General Audiences.

âAnd that would, that would involve, what?â he spoke hesitantly, softly. âHolding your hand, telling you that you mean a lot to me, kissing you for them to see?â
Two great hands were constricting Aziraphaleâs lungs. He fought back an undignified wheeze. âYes, I think so.â
âI can do that,â he croaked.

It also could have started like this: Once upon a time, the angel told the demon he went too fast. The demon took it to heart.
Aziraphale and Crowley find themselves somehow married. Crowley fears going too fast. Aziraphale forges ahead. Neither know how to ask questions of each other.

After everything, Aziraphale and Crowley, by unspoken agreement, begin sharing their lives.
---
Why? Aziraphale wanted to ask him, why millennia of the way things were, and now this?
But while Crowley seemed to have little issue upending every unspoken rule theyâd ever written for themselves, Aziraphale was not so flexible, and they had spent thousands of years never quite addressing whatever it was this had stemmed from. Words, Aziraphale had always felt, were for bickering about where to eat for lunch, or hashing out ontological debates, or other trivial nonsense; there was no need to trifle with the imprecision of language, with phrasing and the possibility of being misconstrued, when it came to important matters if the other person simply understood, without needing it said. Six thousand years ago, when Aziraphale had met Crowley on the wall of Eden, watching the first two humans set out to begin the rest of history, something deep within him, more central even than his Grace, had thought, oh, itâs you, and that had been enough for him--for both of them, he assumed--for three millennia.
However much he wanted to ask, he didnât know how. The words simply werenât there.

How to Make Your Writing Less Stiff Part 3
Crazy how one impulsive post has quickly outshined every other post I have made on this blog. Anyway hereâs more to consider. Once again, I am recirculating tried-and-true writing advice that shouldnât have to compromise your author voice and isnât always applicable when the narrative demands otherwise.
Part 1
Part 2
1. Eliminating to-be verbs (passive voice)
Am/is/are/was/were are another type of filler that doesnât add anything to your sentences.
There were fireworks in the sky tonight. /// Fireworks glittered in the sky tonight.
My cat was chirping at the lights on the ceiling. /// My cat chirped at the lights on the ceiling.
She was standing /// She stood
He was running /// He ran
Also applicable in present tense, of which Iâve been stuck writing lately.
There are two fish-net goals on either end of the improvised field. /// Two fish-net goals mark either end of the improvised field.
For once, itâs a cloudless night. /// For once, the stars shine clear.
Sometimes the sentence needs a little finagling to remove the bad verb and sometimes you can let a couple remain if it sounds better with the cadence or syntax. Generally, theyâre not necessary and you wonât realize how strange it looks until you go back and delete them (it also helps shave off your word count).
Sometimes the to-be verb is necessary. You're writing in past-tense and must convey that.
He was running out of time does not have the same meaning as He ran out of time, and are not interchangeable. You'd have to change the entire sentence to something probably a lot wordier to escape the 'was'. To-be verbs are not the end of the world.
2. Putting character descriptors in the wrong place
I made a post already about motivated exposition, specifically about character descriptions and the mirror trope, saying character details in the wrong place can look odd and screw with the flow of the paragraph, especially if you throw in too many.
She ties her long, curly, brown tresses up in a messy bun. /// She ties her curls up in a messy brown bun. (bonus alliteration too)
Generally, I see this most often with hair, a terrible rule of threes. Eyes less so, but eyes have their own issue. Eye color gets repeated at an exhausting frequency. Whatever you have in your manuscript, you could probably delete 30-40% of the reminders that the love interest has baby blues and readers would be happy, especially if you use the same metaphor over and over again, like gemstones.
He rolled his bright, emerald eyes. /// He rolled his eyes, a vibrant green in the lamplight.
To me, one reads like you want to get the character description out as fast as possible, so the hand of the author comes in to wave and stop the story to give you the details. Fixing it, my way or another way, stands out less as exposition, which is what character descriptions boil down toâsomething the audience needs to know to appreciate and/or understand the story.
3. Lacking flow between sentences
Much like sentences that are all about the same length with little variety in syntax, sentences that follow each other like a grocery list or instruction manual instead of a proper narrative are difficult to find gripping.
Jack gets out a stock pot from the cupboard. He fills it with the tap and sets it on the stove. Then, he grabs russet potatoes and butter from the fridge. He leaves the butter out to soften, and sets the pot to boil. He then adds salt to the water.
From the cupboard, Jack drags a hefty stockpot. He fills it with the tap, adds salt to taste, and sets it on the stove.
Russet potatoes or yukon gold? Jack drums his fingers on the fridge door in thought. Russetâthatâs what the recipe calls for. He tosses the bag on the counter and the butter beside it to soften.
This is just one version of a possible edit to the first paragraph, not the end-all, be-all perfect reconstruction. Itâs not just about having transitions, like âthenâ, itâs about how one sentence flows into the next, and you can accomplish better flow in many different ways.
4. Getting too specific with movement.
I donât see this super often, but when it happens, it tends to be pretty bad. I think it happens because writers feel the need to overcompensate and over-clarify on whatâs happening. Remember: The more specific you get, the more your readers are going to wonder whatâs so important about these details. This is fiction, so every detail matters.
A ridiculous example:
Jack walks over to his closet. He kneels down at the shoe rack and tugs his running shoes free. He walks back to his desk chair, sits down, and ties the laces.
Unless tying his shoes is a monumental achievement for this character, all readers would need is:
Jack shoves on his running shoes.
*quick note: Do not add "down" after the following: Kneels, stoops, crouches, squats. The "down" is already implied in the verb.
This also happens with multiple movements in succession.
Beth enters the room and steps on her shoelace, nearly causing her to trip. She kneels and ties her shoes. She stands upright and keeps moving.
Or
Beth walks in and nearly trips over her shoelace. She sighs, reties it, and keeps moving.
Even then, unless Beth is a chronically clumsy character or this near-trip is a side effect of her being late or tired (i.e. meaningful), tripping over a shoelace is kind of boring if it does nothing for her character. Miles Moralesâ untied shoelaces are thematically part of his story.
Sometimes, over-describing a characterâs movement is meant to show how nervous they areâoverthinking everything theyâre doing, second-guessing themselves ad nauseam. Or theyâre autistic coded and this is how this character normally thinks as deeply methodical. Or, youâre trying to emphasize some mundanity about their life and doing it on purpose.
If youâre not writing something where the extra details service the character or the story at large, consider trimming it.
â
These are *suggestions* and writing is highly subjective. Hope this helps!

I really want to get into wargames and minis, but I realized that scale is kicking my ass, because it just doesn't "click" with me. How "small" is a 28mm miniature supposed to be? Stylization from different manufacturers aside, do I just literally take out a ruler and measure if it's 28 mm tall? That simple? I just want to kit bash and have fun. I also live in a place that could be called a "miniature wargames desert" but a few swap meets exists where I could get extremely cheap little toys. Also, I found you by looking at the Turnip28 tag and I'm really loving your stuff.
Admittedly itâs sometimes really hard to gauge that, both with miniature photography and on stores. Iâve bought miniatures from some obscure ranges and the scale is completely not what I expected at all.
However, to give a better sense of scale, here is some different mini ranges with some normal common day items that a tumblrina might have around;

A Warhammer 40,000 Skitarii, Noise Marine, and Sister of Battle next to a standard English crumpet (dated 2024, for shrinkflation purposes).

Forge World minis in front of a Windows 10 compatible original Xbox controller nicknamed âThe Dukeâ

A pair of Gun Wizards made from Northstar Gamesâ Frostgrave kits, next to some anti-depressants I forgot to take and you possibly did too.

Necromunda miniatures next to another miniature, this one is a sculpt of one of Queen Elizabeth IIâs corgis.

Age of Sigmar-sub game miniatures next to an omniscient floating piece of LEGO, a 2x2 specifically I do believe is the technical designation.

And finally some BadsquiddoGames minis next to an old science-fiction book nerds will insist is the best thing they read despite not actually reading any real books, bookmarked on page 152.
If these images do not help, then here is a video of a bunch of minis on an A4 piece of paper, with United Kingdom currency and some cheap dice scattered around;
As you see, theyâre small. Most only standing 5 or 6cm in height. Bout an inch or so.

I feel kind of bad or maybe a bit sorry for people who are new to the fandom and full of hope, analyzing everything too much. we were once there too. But now they've suddenly read up on 10 years information, which is overwhelming for anyone. They're excited and waiting for changes and the continuation of the story, but the story ended years ago. they're grasping at any number or sign, looking for clues. I just want to hug them and say, 'Calm down, nothing's going to happen. It was never meant to.
Thatâs one of the reasons why I eventually decided to start tagging my posts, keeping a good archive of information on my blog and answering asks. Especially when a big wave of new fans joined during the pandemic. Falling down this rabbit hole really is a journey, and it can be tough to piece together everything that happened before people were here. Unfortunately, Iâve seen many fans develop awful anxiety after waiting years or months for something âbigâ to happen. New fans often seem on edge, and I genuinely feel bad because I donât want anyone to go through that.
I get that some of our answers might come across as grumpy or impatient, but itâs because you really shouldnât hold your breath for anything in this fandom. Believing in something comes with a risk, and itâs up to you to navigate that.
Maybe whatever we were waiting for was never meant to happen.. who knows?!! But amazing things have happened, and we still have incredible moments to enjoy. But things are very different now compared to the posts from 10 years ago that we still read and hold so dear in this fandom.
