Forever tinkering with how I do cel-style coloring. (Consistency? I ain't know her.) Also an exploration in doing proper backgrounds again (the building alone took like 17 hours of research, studies, drawing, and rendering, and that's when I remembered why I get lazy about this shit).

(Haven't touched the NSO release yet. Besides that, I'm still stuck in the middle of my "Damn It, Matthew" GSDD run and my "Bitchin' Isaac" GS1 run because what is gaming besides idly chillin' in TotK.)

finally found another japanese copy of gsdd today which is great bc i have spent the past week trying to figure out when i can find time to go all the way back to the shop where i saw the first copy and didnt buy it. because i actually i did want to buy it. so badly.

anyway soon i’ll set this sideblog up and use it to keep track of my little project where i play both jpn + eng versions of the game simultaneously. i dont have time to do it now but im very excited

this will be a fun trip down memory lane (i’ve played this game at least 5 times but the last playthrough was probably...5 years ago?) + an interesting test to see if i can spot any differences between the 2 versions i dont already know about + good practice for reading japanese/a way to expand my vocabulary bc i desperately need that (i briefly checked out the japanese versions npc dialogue thx to the save files of the previous owner of this cartridge and it looks like there is furigana for literally everything which will hopefully make this much easier!!!)

Since I made myself think about it here's some Complaints I have about g.olden s.un d.ark d.awn. below the cut cuz it's long 💖

As I mentioned before the game ended on a cliffhanger. This is fairly typical of GS games... but to end on a cliffhanger means confidence in getting a sequel. GSDD came out in 2010. It is not getting a sequel 😭

The initial three members of the party are very weak as characters. They're the result of your classic Babies ever After Heterosexual Ending, and the children of the previous game's heroes. While this does make sense from a lore standpoint, as only a small percentage of the world can use psynergy (their form of magic Basically), their identities are greatly overshadowed by that of their parents. Other characters consistently refer to them as simply "the children of the Weyward Five" (May be misremembering the exact title it's been a LONG time).

If this game was about them breaking free from that and carving their own paths this would be good writing. But it's not about that 😭

While on this note. There's a feature where you pick "dialogue" for the silent protagonist by choosing an emote out of a set of four. However I feel like these emojis are.... Ineffective. If you choose the anger emote during a serious moment other characters will be like "what the hell?? Calm down." if you pick a more relaxed emote they'll be like "what the hell??? Why are you so calm???" There's literally no way to Not get yelled at about it. It's annoying 💖

The next 5(!) party members have more personality, but it's also because they aren't connected to the heroes in any major way! Of these is Sveta who is one of my favourite characters of all time. When they're introduced they really show just how plain the initial 3 are, however.

Man... I can't even complain about the story cuz I remember so little of it 😭 however I will say it's a bit annoying how Long the "point of no return" in the game is. Usually when that happens, when it's literally impossible to go back to many early sections of the game, it's the games absolute most final arc. Just one more dungeon to clear. GSDD makes you go on a goddamn treasure hunt before reaching that point

Wish the game had airships instead of being nautical travel based. This one is more personal preference but I hate that there gets to be a point where ur almost constantly being swarmed by powerful enemies and there's literally nooooooo break from it 😭 airships would be a break from it.

Also to her to the weapon refinery where u can craft and acquire stronger weapons rather than buying them you have to go thru this same type of area. Every single time. This is just bad from a gameplay mechanics standpoint.
