Your experiences while deployed or on state duty as a N.C. National Guard Soldier/Airmen are unique.

For some, sharing their experience may be therapeutic and for others, it may be a way to reconnect with battle buddies they’ve lost touch with throughout the years.  

If you have a story about your Guard life that you’ve been holding on to but would like to share either through a written story or a video blog let us know, we can help you with edits and publish it.  

Telling your story helps create an oral history of the N.C. National Guard service to our country.

Supporting a Warrior’s Recovery

1. What is K9s For Warriors?

K9s For Warriors provides service dogs to post-9/11 military Veterans coping with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and/or military sexual trauma (MST). As the nation’s largest provider of service dogs for disabled Veterans, this nonprofit’s goal is to help service members ease back into civilian life.

2. How will K9s For Warriors help me?

Studies show service dogs can help those with PTSD. Soldiers with a verified clinical diagnosis of PTSD, TBI, or MST can apply for a service dog at no cost to them. Once selected, Soldiers then attend the training with their new service dog during a three-week program at K9s for Warriors’ 17,000-square-foot campus in Florida.

3. What tips does K9s For Warriors have for me?

Reach out for help. K9s For Warriors can assist Soldiers throughout the application process. Even if you do not qualify for the program, K9s For Warriors’ team can help you find other support and resources.  

Stay connected. The organizations supports Soldiers long after the training program is complete. The nonprofit can provide services, such as health care and food for your service dog, as well as funds to assist with emergency veterinary care.

Give back. Find a way to get involved with K9s For Warriors, such as raising awareness or donating a dog to the service dog training     program.

Keeping Military Families Connected

1. What is United Through Reading?  

­­United Through Reading (UTR) helps military families stay connected during deployments, trainings, and mobilizations by providing the opportunity for the Soldiers to video-record themselves reading books aloud to their children. The nonprofit organization then provides the recording and book to the Soldier’s child, so the child can follow along during the reading.

2. How will United Through Reading help me?

United Through Reading helps create everyday moments during times of separation. While away, a Soldier can continue a reading routine with his or her child to stay connected as a family and build the child’s literacy skills. The reading videos also make the reunion and reestablishment of family routines easier for both the child and the Soldier.  

Wondering why you should make a video recording instead of using video chat? Two reasons:

Accessibility. Sometimes timelines don’t add up for Soldiers and their families. With a video, the child can play and repeat the video as much as he or she wants, even when the Soldier is on duty.

No connection required. Connecting to the internet is not always reliable, especially during deployment. A UTR video ensures the Soldier is always available for bedtime stories.  

3. What tips does United Through Reading have for me?

Consider recording a reading for your child! It can help:

Reduce the child’s anxiety

Ease homecoming stress

Improve family relationships

Promote resiliency

UTR encourages parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, or any Soldier who has a bond with a special child in his or her life to find a recording location near them and pick a book to share with loved ones.
