Eurovision 2004 - Number 18 - Scooter - "Jigga Jigga!"

Perhaps the biggest name on the running order for Germany 12 Points! 2004 were Scooter. A band that were huge all over Europe bringing happy hardcore to the masses. They'd already had numerous hit singles and albums throughout the continent including many number ones and top tens. The were particularly popular across central Europe, Scandinavia, the Benelux countries and into the UK and Ireland. They're one of the only performers I've covered so far to have warranted a separate Wikipedia page for their discography. Their career as a band is so long, it has been divided into chapters for easier consumption.

In 2004, they're on the third chapter, and the core of the bands are H.P. Baxxter (aka Hans Peter Geerdes) and Rick J. Jordan. Their biggest hits have come in the previous two years, so a potential Eurovision appearance for Germany would be huge. In an effort to get there, the band have written Jigga Jigga - a classic club floor filling hardcore anthem that is immensely loud. The sound is huge, pounding from the first bar. The verses (if that's the right way round) are non-stop pulse accelerating hits of adrenaline, only for the choruses to drop every electronic and percussive element completely and allow a female singer to sing a simple folkish melody and give everyone a breather.

This a song intended to make you sweat, and lose any semblance of control over your inhibitions and voluntary muscular movements. It's the hardest club song I've encountered yet in the national finals or Eurovision - and if it had won rather than finishing second, it would have been a radical departure for Eurovision. Something so different and in your face it could have ruptured the fanbase. Conservative audiences and fans might have retreated in shock.

Yes, it came second and it was not close. In the two-way televote super-final, the winner go 92% of the vote. Scooter got 8%. Even in Germany, it was alienating a huge section of the home audience. Too soon Scooter, too soon.

This is was no problem for Scooter who didn't return. This edition of Germany 12 Points is the one when the German record labels and NDR went full out to get the biggest German acts and they succeeded. It's a one of a kind final that does crop up almost every year and means that nearly every act in it is a one-off. That's Germany this year. There is one more Eurovision connection. H.P. Baxxter was on the German jury at Eurovision 2009 alongside Guildo Horn

Scooter continued and are recording and touring to this day. They are considered the most commercially successful German singles act in history. One of their singles Hyper Hyper is the inspiration behind Electric Callboy's mega-viral single Hypa Hypa, here it is

Michael Cretu did end up on many surprising places thanks to him being at the periphery of a variety of a lot of things. Thus, you can locate him on the Scooter's album, which mashed up several songs. True, he might not have been present in the studio for the remake of his tune, but I find the entire situation quite funny, i.e. the thought of the members of Scooter listening to Enigma makes you laugh, since this might be really away from their usual music. Still, they did probably learn something from Cretu and his way around the studio. We have to be honest – Cretu did a lot of intriguing things, though he rarely revealed his recipes for them, letting the others figure that out. I'm sure Scooter appreciated that.
