you knock on the door to Donghyun's studio. not hearing a response, you open the door just slightly to find your boyfriend sitting at his desk, headphones on and probably producing music.

carefully, you walk towards him and once you're close enough, you draw a heart on his back. immediately, he knows it's you. it's like your secret little signal for each other: if someone draws a heart on your back with two fingers, you know it's Donghyun, and he also knows it's you if it ever happens to him.

he removes his headphones and turns around with a smile he just can't hide despite trying to. he doesn't wanna seem like he's absolutely head-over-heels in love with you but he just is.

"y/n?! when did you get here?" he asks, hand over his mouth as he hides his smile.

"just now," you reply, kissing the back of his hand.

he jerks it away from his mouth and whines, leaving you laughing.

"is producing going well, big baby?" you ask, patting and stroking his head. he looks adorable under your touch and you melt.

"mhm."

"i'm not interrupting, am i?" you ask, suddenly worried.

he shakes his head and says, "no, i was just about to take a break anyway!"

he pulls you onto his lap, letting your legs rest on the seat inbetween his own legs. you relax against his chest and he takes hold of your hands, slowly swivelling from side to side in his chair as he basks in your warmth and scent.

"did you eat?" you ask Donghyun.

"was gonna," he replies quietly, hoping he wouldn't worry you.

"shall we order some delivery?" you ask.

he giggles in agreement, but also because of the way he can hear your voice vibrating through your body and onto his own chest, which you still lay against.

you pull out your phone and scroll through the different restaurants, Donghyun watching behind you and humming in approval as you show him the options. eventually, you both decide on something and as you wait for the food to arrive, Donghyun plays some of his unreleased songs for you.

he has you sit in his seat as he stands up and gives you a half-live performance, singing and dancing along to his self-produced beats. seeing you crack up as he twerks makes him laugh, too, and you both get butterflies seeing each other in such a happy state.

once the food arrives, you both sit on the floor to share the meal, Donghyun playing whatever movie or youtube video you both decide to watch in the moment. he shares his food with you and you do the same, smearing ketchup on his nose and calling him rudolph.

"ahhh y/n you can't do this to me! right when i'm about to eat? all i have is soup in front of me, i can't even defend myself... unless i pour it on you, but it's scorching hot!" Donghyun complains.

you shrug your shoulders at him, sticking out your tongue until he quickly bring his face close to yours. his wet, ketchup-y nose gently touches yours, spreading the sauce onto your own face, too.

"now there's two rudolphs," your boyfriend points out.

you lean forward this time, cleaning his nose with a single kiss. Donghyun scrunches up his face and balls up his fists while whining the whole time, but he's blushing when you pull away, hiding his face.

"a-are you obsessed with kissing me today or something?" he stutters.

you stick your tongue out at him again, trying to return to what's playing on the computer screen when Donghyun kisses the ketchup away from your nose, too. you immediately feel warmth bubbling up from within you, your nose tingling from the contact.

you both stare at each other for a few moments before laughing it off, properly wiping the ketchup away and tucking into your meal.

at some point, you both end up laying on the floor, using Donghyun's arms as pillows: one went beneath your head and the other went beneath his own. side by side in your food coma, you listen to Donghyun as he hums a song.

"we should probably walk the food off instead of laying here.. it'll make us feel worse," you point out.

"but i prefer laying here with you," Donghyun whines, turning towards you and snuggling into your side.

your fingers automatically come up to run through his soft locks, and he almost sounds like he's purring as you caress him.

"okay, Donghyun-ah... let's stay here," you say, quietly.

his breathing evens out and you think that your pretty boy has fallen asleep while laying on the ground by your side. you turn to gently kiss his chin, since that's the only spot you can reach, before starting to fall asleep, yourself.

you don't notice the way Donghyun smiles brightly to himself, having been awake and still reeling from the way you tenderly petted and kissed him.

Musical Clues for JJK1

Another Instagram post with JK today from Lee Hwi Min one half of Groovy Room with Park Gyu-Jeong.

They are DJs, composers and producers and debuted in 2016.

Their highest charting track in Korea is the 2017 hit Sunday with Heize and Jay Park which got to No. 19 in the chart.

In 2018 they reached No. 36 with My Paradise featuring Chung Ha and VINXEN.

More recent music includes Carabiner with ASH ISLAND (2021).

Lee Hwi Min launched his solo career in April last year as Lil Mosh Pit with his album AAA which includes a track with Paul Blanco.

Both Groovy Room and Lil Mosh Pit are related to Jay Park (whose appearance with JK on Instagram last April caused an uproar) through the H1gher Music Record label.

They also have recently formed their own label called AREA to which they have signed rappers Gemini and Mirani.

So can we imagine JK as a featured artist on a Groovy Room or Lil Mosh Pot boom bap or rap song? Or perhaps pairing up with Mirani or Gemini on something. Time will tell.

Donghyun has struggled a lot with love. he doesn't even fully understand what it is yet, but one thing he knows for sure is that he loves you.

all the late night conversations with you are his favourite, texting and talking about the most random things. he's up because of his schedules, but you're up just for the sake of talking to him.

if that isn't true love, he wonders, then what is?

his texts make you roll around in your bed, kicking your feet around while he tries to hide his laughter as he re-records his part in the studio for the millionth time.

he adores the way you ruffle his hair, sometimes randomly, sometimes after you tell him he's cute, and sometimes when he's being annoying. when he closes his eyes, all he can feel is your fingers running through his hair.

when he tells you he's tired, frustrated, and stuck on a song, you always run straight to him. whenever you're lonely and sad, he also runs straight to you. so many late night were spent with you chasing him around in your apartment as he runs away with one of your stuffed animals, teasing you for owning something that looks so much like you.

you run circles through his head all the time, so he's constantly either with you, calling you, texting you, or thinking of you. so many of his songs have become about you, even though you don't know it yet.

you don't know it yet but soon you will, because he's running to your place right now, usb stick in hand, his shoes on the wrong feet, his jacket inside-out because you came before the clothes he put on.

"Donghyun?!"

his confidence drops the second you call his name as reality hits him. what the hell is he doing ?!

"did you run all the way here? why are you dressed like this? at least have some water.." you tell him, inviting him in.

once he catches his breath, drinks the water you offered and takes a good look at you in your oversized pyjamas, he hands you the usb with a grin.

"what's this?" you ask.

"call me after you've listened to it," he says before suddenly running out of your place.

"wait, your jacket!" you call after him, but he's already gone.

you decide to try the usb out before you call him to tell him he left his jacket.

after plugging it into your laptop, you notice a few mp3 files. you listen to them in order, hearing heartwarming lyrics and Donghyun's talent spilling out of your speakers.

the songs are all love confessions, swooning over the touch of a friend who has yet to become a lover, and slowly falling for all the little things about them. they remind you a lot about the way you feel about Donghyun, and it makes you blush. yet, there's no way these are about you!

you call Donghyun and he immediately answers, as if he was waiting for your call.

"did you make it home okay? you left your jacket," you say.

"mhm. the jacket can be yours from now on. it looks better on you, anyway," Donghyun replies in a raspy voice. you can hear him smiling.

"... did you listen to the usb files?" he quietly asks.

"yeah... they remind me so much of my own feelings. they're so beautiful... are you gonna release them as an album soon?" you ask, trying to hide your jealousy. you know Donghyun's lyrics are always real and about his own emotions, so you wonder who Donghyun has been falling for and why you haven't heard about them from him yet.

"maybe, if you let me."

"why do you need my permission?"

"cause they're about you, y/n. it wasn't obvious?" he asks with a slight laugh.

you squeeze your eyes shut as the realization hits you. you're the one Donghyun has been falling for all this time?!

"oh..."

"i like you, y/n. i'll wait for you at my studio. if you feel the same, come here by 12am," he says before hanging up.

you check the time: 11:46pm. shit.

you throw on Donghyun's jacket, since it's the first thing you see, along with a random pair of shoes. keys, phone, wallet, and you race out.

"door's open!" Donghyun yells after you knock on the door.

he breaks out into a grin when he sees you step in, panting and wearing his big, green jacket.

"y/n..."

you race forward and hug him, resting your head on his chest.

"i like you too, you idiot. why'd you make me run all the way here to hear that from me."

"because i miss you," he giggles mischievously.

when you reach up to ruffle his hair, he realizes he's home.

"now that you're here past 12am, i guess you'll have to stay the night," he says slyly, still holding you close.

"you're sleeping on the floor and i'm taking the bed," you declare, poking his nose.

his face scrunches up as he laughs, reaching for you after you run away.

"i'm sleeping next to you, what do you mean?!"

"just sleep in my arms while you're at it, Donghyun," you shout back at him from outside his studio, since you ran off.

Damn I wonder what the future holds for H1ghr. After Jay left it feels like everyone is leaving. And is cha cha still the sole ceo? Ph-1 posted the H1ghr logo on his socials, what does that mean? Do you think the label will eventually dissolve?

I was thinking that because it seems like so many people have left in such a short time but after looking at their current roster, they still have quite a few people.

I think it's just a lot less common for people to stay with labels long term now and that's why we're seeing so many people leave h1gher. Indigo has a track record of a lot of original members leaving too. P Nation also. Even in kpop we have YG, when their company used to have people stay FOREVER lol.

I'm not really sure what Ph-1 posting that meant but I think it could just be him just showing his commitment to h1gher like "I'm still here. Don't plan on leaving" but I've seen others speculate that maybe Ph-1 will be a co-ceo. I really don't know cause it was just too vague lol.

I think h1gher still has a few years left in it. There's always gonna be someone who wants to join h1gher because their legacy is just so big now. I'm sure there's still a lot of rappers whose dream is to be signed to h1gher, especially to work with Cha Cha and Hwimin as producers and then Ph-1 or Big Naughty as a featuring artist. I think as long as some combination of those 4 are around then H1gher should be fine. But if we start seeing them leaving too THEN it's time to get scared LOL

K-Pop Icon DAWN Goes Deep on His New Single and Life After HyunA

After splitting with his creative (and romantic) partner, DAWN teamed up with the production duo GroovyRoom. Now, he's ready for a new era.

DAWN HAS BROKEN all the K-pop rules. Well, almost all of them. “I want to try getting my nipples pierced,” he tells Rolling Stone over a video call, his smile embellished with a diamond-studded lip ring, “but I’m scared because I recently got a tattoo near my nipple and I went through hell.” Tattoos and piercings are the least of the rapper’s transgressions. For the past five years, in an industry where dating is often contractually forbidden, DAWN has been known as one half of South Korean entertainment’s most notorious and beloved It couples. His partner-in-crime? HyunA, an industry legend.

When the pair began dating in secret in 2016, she was already a K-pop superstar and he was training to join her label’s boy group, Pentagon. In 2018, at the height of Pentagon’s fame, DAWN and HyunA went public with their relationship, pushing back as their label denied they were together. The move got them fired, and cemented the duo as K-pop’s puckish provocateurs.

When the pair began dating in secret in 2016, she was already a K-pop superstar and he was training to join her label’s boy group, Pentagon. In 2018, at the height of Pentagon’s fame, DAWN and HyunA went public with their relationship, pushing back as their label denied they were together. The move got them fired, and cemented the duo as K-pop’s puckish provocateurs. 

Psy scooped them up, signing them to his label, P Nation, and they released music as soloists and as a duo, each acting as the other’s muse. Their releases were quirky, bright, and bonkers, a deliciously delirious combination of their creative ethea.

HyunA and DAWN announced their engagement in February 2022, posting a photo of their asymmetrical rings in matching seashell-shaped boxes. The news felt karmic, a well-earned triumph over the obstacles their relationship went up against in the public eye. In August, they surprised fans when they decided not to renew their contracts with P Nation. Then, in November, HyunA posted a simple note to Instagram. “We broke up,” it read in Korean, “We decided to remain good friends and co-workers from now on. Thank you always for your support and care.” A few days later, DAWN added, “[HyunA] is still just as precious to me, more sincere and cool than anyone and the artist I will continue to love most.”

Now single and solo, DAWN has found a new creative partner in the Korean producing duo GroovyRoom, who signed him to @Area, their imprint on Korea’s leading hip-hop label, H1gher Music, in January.

Nursing the wounds of his very public break up, DAWN is crafting a new sound grounded in simplicity and sincerity. His latest single, “Dear My Light,” is an unvarnished ode to the unbridled brilliance of a partner. “You know you were my everything, I was happy enough to forget myself,” he sings. “It’s OK if I lose everything, as long as I can see you dazzling.” Rolling Stone spoke with DAWN from his art studio in Seoul to learn more about the creative partnerships that have shaped his music and how he is redefining his singular sound.

I think of your sound and style as bold, edgy, and bright. It’s surprising that this first single is a ballad, then, because it’s so simple in a lot of ways. Why did you choose to go in that direction? When I first joined At Area and discussed what kind of music I wanted to make with them, we agreed we had the same heart to create music that is sincere. At that time, I had just gone through a breakup, so naturally, those feelings and experiences were reflected in my music.

I had a lot of meetings with different labels — some were small, some were big — and GroovyRoom was the last team I met. I actually didn’t have high expectations for the meeting, but I just felt it from them, that these people were sincere and honest, and I could envision what they wanted to do, so I thought it’d be fun to make music with them.

What did that vision look like? Within the Korean music industry, my and GroovyRoom’s style of music is not common. It’s not a genre of my own, nor is it a genre that can only be produced by GroovyRoom, but we’re all about experimentation and trying something new. In a way, our work could be more suited for a global audience, but we also want to reach out to the Korean audience, too. GroovyRoom talked about creating something new, and this is something that I want to do, too.

How is work split between you and GroovyRoom? Prior to joining GroovyRoom, I had a team to support me, but did everything creative by myself: writing lyrics, melodies, choosing the vibe of my music. And if there was a music video, I chose how to shoot the video, what kind of clothes I was going to wear, and my choreography. Because I was doing it all, there was always something that I was disappointed in when I saw the final result, and maybe it would have been different if I had another creative mind helping to direct it all.

After meeting GroovyRoom, the pressure of doing it all myself went away. Before, I had to do everything by myself, so even though there were a lot of things that I wanted to do, I only had the capacity to do one of them. But now, I have the GroovyRoom and At Area team supporting me, I can attempt everything I want to try. I love that, regardless of who starts the music, we’re able to collaborate and share ideas together. The production process is a lot smoother, and there’s more diversity in terms of genre and style of music as well.

Is there one element you’re really excited to be focused on or devote yourself to? It has to be music. My heart is more comfortable here because I am able to pursue the music that I desire, so I am able to focus solely on that.

Working with P Nation and with HyunA, there was a greater synergy when I did dance music because the image they had for me as the artist DAWN was about dancing and performance. I knew I’d receive a lot more energy and support through that genre, so I had to prioritize it when creating my music. But with GroovyRoom, there is no restriction on the genre of music, and I can express music through rock, or alternative music, dance, pop, ballad, R&B. There are no limitations. So it’s very different.

The lyrics to “Dear My Light” go “It’s OK if I lose everything as long as I see you dazzling.” Can you explain what that feeling is? It means exactly what it says [laughs]. While I was dating HyunA, I experienced lots of new emotions. Just as the lyrics say, I felt that I would be happy only if she was happy too, and whether we have broken up or are together. I felt true happiness when I saw her happy. 

After a breakup, it can feel like you’re redefining yourself as a person, shaping a new identity and learning who you are outside of the relationship. Did you have a period like that? At first, it was very difficult to deal with and I couldn’t get used to it. It was an extremely difficult time. But what I realized in that process was that I wasn’t in love with HyunA’s looks or social status — I was genuinely in love with her soul.

I was able to overcome that pain by realizing that I want her to be even happier even when she is not beside me — even more happy than when we were together — because I really love her, and her happiness is my number-one priority. I learned that I can love someone even though we have broken up, and I felt better after I acknowledged that.

How did you take care of your mental health at that time? I walked around outside a lot without taking a break. Once I walked for four hours. It was more difficult for me the more I thought about the breakup, so I moved my body all day until it was so exhausted that I would fall asleep as soon as I got home. It didn’t even have to be my bed, it could have been the floor. I wanted to feel like I could just crash and fall asleep, because I was so exhausted. So I kept myself busy.

Is that your suggestion for people who are going through the same thing? [Laughs.] Just walk. You have to keep walking.

How did you find your own light again? What triggered me to find the light was, at the end of day, myself. It began with knowing that I am someone who can shine, and I continued to work on myself to be that light. And that led me to see the light in everyone around me. So the most important thing was to remember myself. There was no way to escape. Someone else can’t find your light for you. You have to discover it within. 

Can you tell me a little bit more about what has been inspiring you lately? [DAWN cranes his head toward the ceiling, then looks around the room.] My studio — because now I have a spacious room for myself — and people. In the past, I don’t think I tried to be inspired by people because I concluded that the other person would not be able to understand me, and I wouldn’t be able to completely understand them. But after opening my own studio space, lots of people have come to visit me, both new and familiar faces, and I have a lot of conversations. I’ve been inspired through their stories, things that happened to them that day or thoughts they’ve had.

They’re people who create art, who craft things. And we’ll get together and talk about how to express our feelings in a fun and artistic way. And that process can turn into music, or a painting, or a sculpture. We all have such different roles and talents, so we never know what our collaborations will turn into.  

Next to my studio are studios of friends who paint or sculpt, and they have all the equipment, so I hop over and have a go when I’m bored. I love having that time to enjoy those experiences. And the At Area office is right next to my studio, so I go over there to work on our music. 

How would you describe the music that will come from your time here, from your collaboration with GroovyRoom? It’s very diverse. There’s a bit of rock, hip-hop … I think “band” music might be a better word than rock. I’m not doing any rapping so far. I think the biggest change is that I’ve worked on expressing myself through my voice rather than my body. GroovyRoom has helped me with that. My voice is my own instrument, and it’s like I’ve learned a different way to play it. So whatever music I create, it sounds different to what I’ve made in the past, and that amazes me. I am completely free. To be honest, I can’t see any limitations to what I can produce with this team.

When I first started writing this fanfic back in 2019, it was out of boredom because I was bedridden and sick. I couldn't move and had nothing else to do. I then took a 1 year hiatus due to getting hate on the fanfic. I never knew that this fanfic would become like this. I originally intended it to only have 5 chapters but plans changed lol. I'm so sorry for this rushed ending but I hope you all enjoyed not only the chapter, but the whole fanfic. Thank you all for being with me for these 3 years and for those who are new comers, thank you for supporting me and being with me through the tough times. Now that I'm done with this fanfic, I will be returning the Ph-1 fanfic and I have a few other fanfics brewing for you all.
