i know bridget is supposed to be danny's baby sister but honestly they could be fraternal twins
Tumblr media
which makes me think they could have been attracting the same people/were in competition for the same people, dubbed 'the williams twins', like catnip to bisexuals (and yes, they are both obviously bi too)
danny introducing steve to bridge: my partner, MINE, hands OFF!
Tumblr media
bridget: i told you for the 100th time i did not kiss your prom date, she kissed me!
danny: what about billy in 11th grade?
bridget: will you give it a rest? i called dibs.
danny: well i called dibs on steve.
Tumblr media
steve: do i get a vote?
both danny and bridget: no

Feeback Fest 2024: H50 Fic Recs
For International Fanworks Day, February 15 (for more information see this post by @transformativeworks)
Thank you, babe @stephmcx because of your great fic rec list I noticed this amazing Fic Rec Day! I'm not often on Tumblr anymore scrolling and discovering interesting things and I miss the interaction with other fandom folks. And here you are, posting a great fic rec list of the most epic OTP ever: Steve and Danny.
I have my McDanno 'go-to' fics I love dearly but for this list I put together a different number of McDanno stories from my bookmarks. I hope some of you haven't read them already. Maybe there's a chance you find an unknown great McDanno story. All of my recommanded stories always act like a large safety net of love I let myself fall into when I need those special, unique, and most magic McDanno vibes.
1.Blue Shorts and Gloves by WeirdoOfTheCentury - Summary: Danny... well Danny is Danny. Stella is a protective Sister and both Steve and herself wanna commit a crime when it comes to Danno. @shadowhunterdownworlderhybrid
2.Touch My World With Your Fingertips by kristen999 - Summary: Danny has plans for Steve when he returns home from his reserve drill.
3.More Than Words, Part One by Candy_A - Summary: The first chapter in a series based on the events that follow Danny's rescue from Colombia (Episode 5.17). In this installment, Danny returns to Hawaii and he and Steve begin to cope with the reality of Danny's ordeal there. (Nine parts belong to this outstanding series)
4.See You Tomorrow by bgharison - Summary: "When we were leaving the office, I said, ‘see you tomorrow’ to Chin and Kono, and they said, ‘yeah, see you tomorrow'. I said, ‘see you tomorrow’ to you, and you said, ‘goodnight’, And 'goodnight' sounded like 'goodbye', okay?""I wasn't saying goodbye," he said, finally. But he kept his eyes fixed on the water.
5.Why don't you try me? by azziria - Summary: Steve and Danny both want the same thing, they just don't know it yet.
6.Back To Back (They Faced Each Other) by harrycrewe - Summary: Danny didn’t even realize that Steve was a sentinel when they first met. That probably said a lot right there about what kind of a guide Danny was.
7.Like Death and Taxes by ariadnes_string - Summary: "One of these days," Steve growled, voice low and rough and filthy, "I'm gonna rip this thing off you and gag you with it." (That's my very first McDanno fanfic I read.)
8.Moments In The Skript by joannereads - Summary: Hello all! So, over the last few years I have dreamed of a few scenarios before, during and after the events of The Script. I wanted to add to it, but never found the time, so now I'm making a point of doing it. I'll add to this as and when I have time or the muse is singing. Some of the stories will be teen and up, some explicit. Hope you enjoy! (RPF)
9.Close To Me by joannereads - Summary: Danny Williams is 17. Steve McGarrett is 26. They all live in Hawaii. And their lives are about to get really, really messy. Because Steve? Steve's his brother's best friend.
10.Sock Monkey by Cattraine - Summary: He’s late; he’s running late when the call comes in. One minute he’s sitting at a traffic light on a perfect day on his way to work, bemoaning his lack of coffee and the next he’s screeching the Camaro’s tires towards the accident, heart pounding, keeping perfect time with the chant in his head. No, no, no. It can’t be.

thank you @smilebackwards for the tag in this one, bc I always love a ramble
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 474, with a lot of them being imported from the LiveJournal days (...and worse, a LOT that never made it because I don't want them under my current pseud).
2. What's your total Ao3 word count? 3,447,393. I'm a wordy bitch when I want to be. I was just saying that I've somehow gotten into this habit of thinking every fic I write has to be a minimum of 8k, even though my next fic that will go live will prob be 5kish (...and then something that will prob be around 12k).
3. What fandoms do you write for? Right now, Ted Lasso, Zukka, Raven Cycle (though I'm out of ideas, but may grab one of my miscellaneous for that), Old Guard, Roswell New Mexico (I'm coming back, bitches).
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? ready for my close up, mr. dameron (poe/finn) how to fall in love with a fairytale (poe/finn) what a tale my thoughts could tell (joe/nicky) Your Hand In Mine (poe/finn) hallelujah, you're still mine (joe/nicky) (very sad my highest kudos'ed steve/danny h50 one was top 7 and not top 5)
5. Do you respond to comments? Always. No matter what. It's a habit I got into and there's a bit of social anxiety I have around it, but I will always do it.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably The Time Traveling Pilot (Poe/Finn), which has some lovely bookmarks like, Fuck I'm crying, im absolutley fucking sobbing and my fave, I'll never be brave enough to read this fic again, but I'm so glad I read it once. And honestly? Fair. I sobbed a lot writing it.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Basically, 90% of my stuff? My habit tends to be super happy/fluffy stuff and then 10% of my stuff is meant to be angst that will destroy you (...there's a Zukka coming up that will reinforce that pattern)
8. Do you get hate on fics? I started to get a lot of it on Roswell fics for some really unfortunate reasons, and it actually pushed me to make my RNM fics AO3 users only :/
9. Do you write smut? Rarely these days, but only because the story doesn't feel like it needs it. I'll still write smut scenes if it feels right, but I've been living in more rom-com territory lately.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written? I don't do it as often, but I've done a couple! I did a Leverage x Hustle one, a Star Trek x Dead Like Me, and two whole stories for House MD x Doctor Who. I do it less often these days, but more because the ideas aren't there.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of? So, maybe? I haven't seen it though!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? I've been super lucky to have a bunch of my fics translated!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? YES, and it's my FAVE THING, okay. Cowriters, come at me, I love it. I want more of it.
14. What's your all time favorite ship? My preferences are fleeting like the wind and my faves come and go and then resolidify, but I will say, lately it's starting to seem like Pynch might be the steadiest 'ship I've had in a while.
15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? ...at this point, the Joe/Nicky Outlander Time Traveller's Old Guard, if only because it's a beast of a thing.
16. What are your writing strengths? I really like threading in the little bits of canon and getting as close to the voice and tone as possible. I'd say I've been most successful in some of my Ted Lasso stuff, but I like to be a mimic.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Prose. I'm not great at setting the scene and often my world-building is more characters and relationships than settings or scenarios. I've kind of let that atrophy over the years too.
18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics? I used to do this a lot, if only because I speak enough French & Italian to get by, but in recent years, I've started just writing the phrase in English, italicizing, and indicating in the narrative that they're speaking another language, if only to get away from the footnotes or hovering.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Charmed, I think? Piper/Leo was def baby's first OTP.
20. Favorite fic you have written? I usually say Love Like The Sea (my Webgott), but today I'm going with Baby, I'm Howling For You, my Steve/Danny supernatural fic (and series) because it has the best worldbuilding I think I've ever done and I really enjoy the rules I set around that 'verse.
Tagging @earnmysong, @el-gilliath, @hazel-athena, and anyone else who wants to ramble!

using song lyrics as fic titles is great because it's an easy shortcut around having to come up with something that sounds fitting entirely on my own, but using song lyrics as fic titles was also a big mistake because after ten years and 200+ fics the wonderful, lovely ao3 kudos emails i get every day are extremely confusing. i don't even remember what fandom i ended up matching some of these lyric snippets to, let alone which specific silly and fun scenario out of 131 h50 fics to date. it's like playing a memory game accidentally designed by me alone for me alone through built-in ao3 functions, that's about my own choices in sometimes entirely arbitrary fic+title matches, and which, i regret to say, i think i may be losing.

broke: after danny moves in steve and danny spend so long bickering over whose turn it is to do simple housework like sweeping the floor that it doesn’t get done at all and they need to hire a housekeeper to work around it
woke: danny cleans to have something repetitive and familiar to do when he feels anxious or gets hit by a night of insomnia, and then steve cleans the exact same already clean spaces again because he’s a control freak with perfectionist tendencies and danny missed one (1) square inch of floor under the cupboard

I have a plot bunny. Two whumpees kidnapped and trapped. One gets the brunt of the torture and abuse. The other whumpee takes the role of caretaker, trying to keep their friend alive while trying to ignore the pain from their own injuries. I was thinking Mcgarrett and Danny. Stripped down, filthy, bloodied, and holding each other in some dark prison. I'm thinking a desperate, "Take me instead," when the captors come for the half dead whumpee clutched in the exhausted caretaker's arms.
I could totally see that happening with those boys. Either one of them could take role of caretaker, but I like the idea of Danny taking care of Steve and sacrificing himself to the baddies when it’s clear Steve can’t take anymore. It would be a heartbreaking, amazing story.

i firmly believe after they get together steve is still that lovesick sap who acts like he's won the lottery. like 'can you believe i get to date him? me??? how lucky am i?' every day he's still shocked he somehow managed to pull a danny williams.
danny would be chewing out some poor rookie about mishandling the crime scene and the camera just pans to steve 😍 mcgarrett like: AAA, there they are, the dulcet tones of my most beloved. can you believe he's slumming it with me????'
(danny would catch his gaze and roll his eyes but privately it feels very nice to never be taken for granted, he, too, is the lucky one, just don't tell steve that.)

McDanno Episode Wish
In light of the Season 9 premiere introducing brain-washing techniques, I am really REALLY hoping (in vain, most likely), that they’ll eventually redo episode 11.3 from the original series, entitled “Deadly Courier”.  It doesn’t involve the CIA, though that could be easily retooled, but it does revolve around individuals being brainwashed to carry out a crime (assassinations) without their conscious knowledge (probably a far-fetched concept, but its television, so...).  And who should happen to fall victim?  None other than poor Danny Williams.
For anyone who hasn’t seen the original episode, the key plot points for Danny include:
1. Checking out a lead (on his own), wherein he goes to interview what could either be a witness or the culprit and is identified as police (he initially told them he was a client).
Tumblr media
2.  He is given a tea laced with a sedative...
Tumblr media
3. ...and is then taken to a secret room, where he is given more drugs and endures some sort of electro-shock torture to make him forget what he stumbled on and compliant to orders.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4.  He goes back to Five-0, with no one being the wiser, until the team goes to arrest the criminals, having figured it out by other means (without the information Danny found).  During the chase, the woman responsible for brain-washing him, orders him to kill Steve McGarrett...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. ...but he manages to stop himself.
Tumblr media
6.  Steve disarms him, and after they catch the bad guys, Danny and the other individuals who were brain-washed are treated by a therapist to recover their memories of their captivity.
Tumblr media
I mean, seriously!  Jerry even made a joke about Steve coming back from his torture time and killing the team!  With some story modifications to include Greer’s double crossing, this could potentially tie in perfectly!  Not to mention the amazing McDanno moments this could produce.  And you know Mr. Scott Caan would absolutely kill it!
If this doesn’t happen during this season, would someone please, PLEASE write a fic?  I’ve actually considered tackling it, and maybe I will in the future, but I refuse to start anything new until all my current WIP are finished and uploaded.

15 & 24 [kiss it better] (oh my god, did i never leave a comment on this fic? i'm so sorry. i love it!!)
15. What’s your favorite AU that you’ve written?
I feel like AU is my bread and butter and happy place, so it's super hard to pick just one, but gun to my head, I think my favourite is the supernatural explosion AU verse I wrote for H50 (the Howling series). The first, especially, which was a Big Bang, but all of it was just stupid fun to pack in every single possible trope and fairytale and supernatural creature and make it work (bc why write just a Highlander AU when there can also be witches and mermaids and werewolves, except no ghosts, bc I wanted something funky off about a world where anything is possible).
24. Are there any easter eggs in kiss it better, and if so, what are they? Probably not an actual Easter Egg so much as a thing I never actually put in the notes, but the entire time when I wrote that, young Jennifer Connelly is basically how I pictured Dana Webster, with the bright blue eyes and the dark hair. Another easter egg is that the Skinny POV is because of some PSL scenarios that were happening at the time, but now I feel strongest about how Skinny POV is one of my fave things to write from, so NOT MAD.

Why the myth about Steve's PTSD doesn't add up and other inconsistencies
In the last few episodes of H50, PL tried to sell us a mentally broken Steve suffering from PTSD. Only the whole thing came a bit too late. The clip you see is from season 4 and ended up - no, not in the series - but somewhere on the floor of PL's editing room. And why? after Kurtzman and Orci departed, along with their writers, PL took the helm and started turning Steve into a super-soldier. He stylized him into something that wasn't meant to be. Instead of developing the characters, PL began to incorporate more and more hair-raising action sequences into the series and then let Steve fight on the front lines. There was no mention of Steve's mental state, and a lot was explained by PL with: it just happened "offscreen." Yeah, sure. PL can't create a decent character. He can only produce stereotypes and one-dimensional beings. Like Adam. What potential would that character have had had he been turned into Five-0's antagonist? But no. So his role remained diffuse and monotonous. Sometimes even tragicomical.
Back to Steve. When SEAL Team started on CBS, PL also lapsed into SEAL mania. If someone who writes fanfiction were to produce as much garbage as this man did, he would be chased away from every writers' platform in disgrace. PL's Super SEAL also had to rescue his team members from a blazing inferno. Not man by man, no, he flew a helicopter right into the danger zone and lifted a whole cabin out of the burning jungle. If lunacy had a name, it would be PL. While the action became more and more exaggerated and unrealistic, the same happened to the protagonists. After the departure of Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park, PL completely lost his mind. And please, don't blame the writers for the nonsense that was thrown at you. A series stands and falls with the showrunner. He dictates what he wants and passes it on to his staff.
And so, lovable Steve became a soulless robot who only showed feelings here and there. Danny diminished more and more into a sidekick. McDanno became a ship that drifted anchorless through a stormy sea and threatened to capsize again and again. From season 8, it became a reboot of the reboot. PL tried an ensemble show and failed more than miserably. Often the actors just stood around bored. At least that was the impression. The only highlight was episode 8.10. A feast for all McDanno fans. But even here, the outcome of "who shot Danny" was more than insubstantial.
Wait, there was something about SEALs... Oh, yes. Junior appeared on the scene and became Steve's lapdog. I really wondered when there was going to be an episode where he would fetch sticks for Steve. Luckily we had Eddie for that. And because he thought he was so clever, PL invented the episode speed dating. How many subplots can you squeeze into one episode at the same time? In some episodes, you couldn't even take a look at the bag of potato chips without losing the thread.
The case of the week became the yawn of the week. There were so many loose ends that PL then came up with something called retconning. That's what you do when you're no longer satisfied with what was once established in the series years ago, or it no longer fits. But PL went one step further and did the same with the characters. The more the series was dragged out, the more the characters deteriorated and became OOC. It means, often, they were not recognizable at all. And that's where we come to Steve. Because PL, in his desperation, didn't know what else he could do to Steve, and so he killed Joe White. He did it in such a cheesy way with a fake sunset that it made you sick.
Of course, one episode later, there had to be another gig of PL's favorite Barbie. He stuck a fake beard on poor Steve/Alex, so he couldn't even hug Danny/Scott properly. The episode also raised more questions than it answered any. And Steve? He still didn't suffer from PTSD, even though he had now lost Joe White and a fellow SEAL. Everyone is dropping like flies, except for Steve, who is standing like a rock. No matter what. He doesn't need in-depth talks with Danny, nor psychological care, nor any sleeping pills. No, he's doing great. He also opens a restaurant with Danny because apparently, the carguments are already getting on PL's nerves. Unfortunately, this plot device leads into nirvana. The idea was nice, but nobody thought it through to the end. And the merry-go-round continues. Until we get to season 10, where it gets even more absurd. Now PL is almost bombarding us with McDanno episodes, or at least it should seem that way. Oh well, he's already planning for season 11, so a new character has to come on board quickly. While in the beginning, Steve's mother, Doris, dies.
Alex was allowed to take on the subject. Of course, only under the strict eyes of PL. He then nullifies Alex's idea that Steve kills his mother. Because a good soldier and Super SEAL won't do that. Little does PL know. THAT could have been the opening of a PTSD scenario for Steve. However, apart from that, this episode would have had any potential for a multi-arc. Just imagine Steve chasing his mother across multiple episodes. Again, PL stepped in and butchered Alex's episode. You can really feel sorry for the guy. PL at his best or worse? He just can't help it. And then, on the very last meters of the series, he brings someone new, who is allowed to cruise around with Steve most of the time. Because Danny was kidnapped by Wo Fat's widow, PL also invented quite late to have some villain at his disposal. This wannabe mastermind must really have been living under a rock somewhere if she wasn't even mentioned by her husband or appeared earlier.
Because towards the end, PL obviously ran out not only of steam but also of ideas, everything culminated in a wildly illogical scenario. Steve has to live through a dramatic day with Eddie, who stands as a metaphor for Steve (as I said, PTSD was never a thing for Super SEAL), Danny bangs his brains out in a ladies' room with a complete stranger, who dies shortly after that in an accident with Danny's rental car. Apparently, there was no budget to turn the Camaro into scrap metal. Danny then also goes home alone, ignoring the incoming emergency vehicles. Everything remains open at the end of the episode. While Steve expresses his gratitude to Tani and Quinn and says, he would be just as lost as poor Eddie without the dog and all of them. The strange thing is that you never notice anything until that sentence. A few forced dialogues are supposed to make the drama visible, but they all happen way too late or are so poorly written that you miss them.
PL had decided early on to make Steve a Teflon hero. That also means he didn't need to put much substance into the character. Which you can clearly see if you compare the first three seasons to the rest of the series. But towards the end, PL wanted to turn the tide and forcefully rewrote Steve's past. There is a huge difference if you compare Steve from seasons 1 to 3 with Steve from season 10. It is only a sparse remnant of what made this character so great. This change in Steve's personality also affects his relationship with Danny. The witty, affectionate banter degenerates into a snappy, humorless bitch-fest that takes all the joy out of it.
The final two episodes could have been written for any other crime show. As mentioned, we have Cole, who even gets a book'em Cole from Steve, which can only be described as out of line. And it begs the question, was that what Lenkov originally had in mind? Danny out of the show and Cole in? Was the last episode, which mainly featured McCole, something of a test run? Did all the McDanno moments happen only to tear the two apart eventually? Was the real final scene the one where Steve and Catherine take Danny's coffin back to Jersey? Was Danny not supposed to survive? Was that the real reason Steve wanted to get out of Hawaii because he wanted to pay his respects to Danny? And would he really have returned to Hawaii later? Or would he have turned his back on Hawaii? To me, this ending is more plausible than what PL served us. Then, Steve handed over his credentials to Cole instead of Danny, his second in command. Honestly, you can't make the end of a series any more sloppy and dumber than that. And I won't even lose a word about the last 1:30 minutes because I think everything has already been said.
No PL, mission absolutely not accomplished. You created Teflon-Steve. You never wanted him to show any weakness. You turned him into a superhuman who can survive anything. Only to pull the rug out from under him on the last few meters to the finish line and spit on his legacy. How can you dismantle such a great series and its characters like you did? How much do you have to hate something to do that? In the final interviews, the showrunner didn't exactly cover himself in glory either. Everyone who grew up with the series from day one knows that its end was wrong on all the possible levels and that the showrunner is solely to blame for that. It takes a fair amount of egoism and carelessness to drive 10 years at full throttle against the wall. Not many people can do that. Whether you can be proud of that, however, I doubt.
My respect if you have made it this far. Each of you gets 10 extra brownie points for it.

Hi! So I recently, late last year, became a H50 fan. I'm not really a TV person but I kept seeing one of my mutual blogs posting a lot of McDanno centric posts. So I became interested in their (B)romance thru her.
I've never watched every episode. Especially after finding out how the producer/writers fumbled the finale.
My question is, do Tani and Junior (not even bringing up Quinn or Lincoln since I don't know how long they were on the show or in what capacity i.e. regulars or not) bring substance to the show? Not their romance, but their characters.
This is in no way bashing Meghan or Beulah as actors, but were they basically Kono and Chin 2.0?
Maybe it's because I am so heavily invested in Kono and Chin as original H50 ohana. But I even tend to avoid fics that have Tani and Junior in them.
I'm still not even sure my feelings towards Lou.
Perhaps I'm just being too narrow-minded. And resentful of how Grace and DDK were treated in the end. Don't even get me started about how Scott was downgraded towards the final seasons. (I do know he started spending more time in LA with his family, but is that the only reason how character was treated so poorly. Who knows. I guess it's a "Did the chicken come first or the egg?!" scenario. )
Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my ask.
Hi. I’m so glad that you got into the show! To be honest, I'm not much of a TV person either, but this is the one show I do really love. And before you read all this, I am very honored that you came and asked me about this.
(Disclaimer: I’m sorry if people disagree, and you’re welcome to reply or reblog with your opinion because I would love to hear ‘em! But this is my personal thoughts and what I could type out.)
To answer your question, Anon. I do like Tani and Junior, and I like what they bring to the show. They are not Kono and Chin 2.0 and I’m glad. In simple terms, I wouldn’t trade them for anyone else. I think they did well. Both with the casting and character writing. (I'm forgetting the word for that.) So if you’re wondering whether or not to watch s8 onwards with them, I do suggest at least giving it a shot. And then you could decide for yourself.
Now, you could stop reading this post right here and that’ll be fine. You’ve got your answer but I shall go more in-depth. Because... why not. (I apologize if I get a little rambly.)
(edit: I realized you didn't ask about the romance, but since I typed this out already, I'll keep it in.) I do wanna say I appreciate the sorta ‘young romance’ they kinda had. Acting like teenagers in their flirting, even when they barely knew each other. It’s almost refreshing in my opinion. Since I feel like other couples in the show were never like that? Not they never had a chance to be. Since this show likes to keep people apart somewhat. (Especially when it came to Kono and Adam for example.) Now if you ask some people about Tani and Junior’s romance, they might be happy for them. But it does often get brought up that Tani and Junior are basically Steve and Danny but straight. And even the show itself has made parallels. But that’s a whole other conversation.
Now In all honesty, I do find myself caring more for subplots/episodes that were about Chin and Kono. I do love the core four more if I’m being completely transparent. I miss Steve and Danny having the cousins by their side. But that doesn’t mean I don’t love Tani and Junior.
However, as a whole, I think the entire show suffered as the seasons went on. Even (as you mentioned) Danny’s characterization suffered. And to answer your question about Danny/Scott: I do believe that Scott spent more time in LA (which I don’t blame him for) but I think the show was already losing some of the 'charm' it originally had. So it’s not so much that Danny’s character suffered, but other aspects did too. And even Steve somewhat suffered with his character as well.
Another person came and asked if season 2 was worth watching, and I told them yes. Seasons 1-3 are prime h50. Even season 4 was, debatably. But it’s hard to keep a show - especially one that has ran for so long - good.
But nothing is perfect either. No piece of media is going to stay good forever. And I’m thankful for all 10 seasons of h50. But of course, as time went on things changed for better and for worse. And Grace and Daniel realized they deserved more pay (or as much pay as Alex and Scott) and they do! But unfortunately, a big company is a big company. And they’re not always fair.
So once they left, Thus Tani and Junior came in. They aren’t Chin and Kono replacements in characterization. They’re their own people, and they’re interesting and they have their own backstory and as much depth as the show could muster. So does Lou, and Chi McBride is such a great actor, he’s made cry a few times already. Then as Quinn came in for the tenth season, even Lincoln. They were good as well. Everyone did their jobs.
However, adding all these characters still doesn’t change the fact that Chin and Kono are very much still missed. I wish we could have kept them. But unfortunately, Hollywood is the way it is, and actors deserve to get what they're owed. So I don’t blame them for leaving.
Anon, if you’re still reading then, feel free to ask more questions. I apologize if this was confusing to anyone, but I had run writing it. Thank you all for reading. ❤️
