------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ha-Yun couldn’t breathe.
Her mother was hugging both her and Soo-Chul too tight. All their faces were practically squished with each other.
“Eomma… can’t… breathe…” wheezed out Ha-Yun.
The woman let go of her children. She looked at them with sad eyes as she brushed their hair with her hands. “I’m going to miss you two.”
“Eomma, it’s just a month,” said Soo-Chul.
“Still!” she protested.
Then, they heard the doorbell and a bark from the main door. Ha-Yun’s face brightened up and adjusted her glasses. She knew exactly who was at the front door. So, she quickly went and opened the door to meet a familiar cute fluffy face and his cute owner. Wait. Did she just call Tae Man cute?
Moving on, Tae Man was holding his puppy, Flanders. Ha-Yun picked him up and cooed at him. "Aww, little Flanders came to say goodbye to me? You are so cute."
Tae Man coughed. "Excuse me, Flanders is here to check in his reservation at Hotel Hwang."
Ha-Yun pouted. "I'm gonna miss you, you little furball." She brought the dog inside, leaving the other teen outside. She heard him sigh loudly and stepped inside.
"Eomma, appa! Tae Mannie's here."
"EOMONI ABEOJIIIII!!!" Tae Man hugged the adults tightly. "I'm going to miss you both."
Ha-Yun's father let go of the boy's embrace and patted his shoulder. "Don't get yourself in too much trouble." He leaned in close and whispered, "And don't let guys get too comfy with our Yunnie."
"Yah, appa! I heard that." Ha-Yun pulled Tae Man away from her parents as said boy winked and nodded at her dad.
The three high school seniors stood in line as they bowed their farewells to the parents. "Stay safe, kids!" the mum yelled out as they left the house.
As they walked to school, Tae Man took Ha-Yun's bag and slung it on his shoulder. "Did you pack enough chocolate?"
"Yeah, I even stuffed some in Soo-Chul's bag."
"I packed more just in case."
The girl smiled at him. "Thanks."
"Ew, guys. I don't want to be a third wheel at 7 am in the morning," said Soo-Chul.
The two best friends wrapped their arms around him. "Aww, our Soo-Chul's just sad his best friend lives far away," said Tae Man.
"It's ok, oppa. We won't ignore your presence."
"Yah! Get off me, you two!"
The two burst out laughing at the annoyed boy. "Come on, we're going to be late," Soo-Chul said as he adjusted his bag on his shoulders.
~~
"Wah, it seems like mostly everyone's here," said Ha-Yun as she looked around the class. She didn't expect her classmates to willingly sign up for this program so she assumed they were forced to do it for the extra points.
"Yah, Wang Tae Man, are you selling gum?" Soo-Chul said beside her. The said boy was building a gum castle.
"Yes."
"To chew them after meals?"
"It feels stale after."
So-Yoon and Junhee sighed. Tae Man heard them and offered them each a piece. "Do you want one?"
"Yah, just brush your teeth!"
The girls threw the gum at him and Soo-Chul smacked his head. Only Ha-Yun comforted him. "I brought an extra toothbrush and toothpaste. You better use them."
Tae Man pouted. "Fine..."
Her attention diverted when she saw her girl best friend coming in. "Yah, Lee Nara!"
"Hi, Ha-Yunnie!"
Ha-Yun was just about to ask her a question when Duk-joong screamed Nara's name from the other side of the class. The two girls' heads turned to see Kimchi trying to shut his best friend up while his cheeks were blushing.
Ha-Yun turned to Nara with a teasing smile and was about to say something when Mrs Park and some military dude came in. She crossed her arms. "Is the universe against me talking today?"
Her friend laughed and told her to go sit at her place. She did as told but noticed Soyeon being captivated by the military guy. Ha-Yun silently laughed as her friend slapped Wutaek away.
"I have someone to introduce to you all," announced Mrs Park.
The military guy saluted. "Loyalty. Nice to meet you. I'm First Lieutenant Lee Chun Ho, who will be Class 3-2's platoon leader."
Ha-Yun sat up straighter. His seriousness gave her a nervous feeling. This military training was getting too real.
"First Lt. Lee will explain about the training," said Mrs Park.
"Yah, he has a diamond on his forehead," Il-ha pointed out.
Mrs Park quickly shushed them as Lt. Lee took the podium. "You'll be assigned to the Second Platoon of the Sungjin Division Combat Unit, and I'll be your platoon leader. Most of the training will take place after school when your regular classes are over."
The class wasn't happy with that. What do you mean after 8 hours of school, they have military training? They were already tired after 1 hour of class. Ha-Yun took out her chocolate and took a bite.
Lt. Lee continued, "On days when you have agendas, training will take priority over classes. So don't get confused later. Banjang?"
Yoojung stood up. "Yes?'
"You're the Senior Private."
"What's that?" Ha-Yun asked Nara. "It means she will be our leader if the commander isn't here. Which is basically the same duties as Class President."
"Next, I'll select a clerk who'll record your training, as well as your videos to send home. Any volunteers?"
Nobody raised their hand.
"No one? Broadcasting Club, anyone?"
No response.
"Then I'll randomly select-"
"Mr. Commander?" interrupted Mrs Park. "Can I recommend someone? Young-Hoon-ah, will you have a go?"
"Me?"
"Yes. I think you'd learn a lot from the experience."
"What should I learn?"
Il-ha spoke up. "Jang Young-Hoon. Just do it. It's not a big deal."
"Then do it yourself," Ha-Yun muttered. Tae Man snickered quietly at her retort.
Young-Hoon turned to Il-ha. "Then you do it." Ha-Yun's jaw dropped as Tae Man's laughs were shushed by Mrs Park.
"Give it a go and if you don't like it, I'll let you swap," said Mrs Park.
"I have to study. I don't want to waste my time."
"Damn..." whispered Tae Man. Even Ha-Yun was surprised by his answer.
"That's fine," said Lt. Lee. He looked around and his eyes settled on Kimchi. "You there, Private."
Kimchi looked surprised and turned to Wutaek to double-check. "He means you, idiot," said Wutaek. "Who... me?" Kimchi asked Lt. Lee.
"You're the clerk. Any objections?"
A few giggles were heard when Kimchi reluctantly agreed to the job.
Then, Lt. Lee said, "You get three bonus points."
"What?!"
"So does the Senior Private."
"Just like that?!"
"So many points..."
"There's a bonus point system separate from the extra CSAT points. You'll be scored for your attitude and aptitude, and ten bonus points equals one extra CSAT point. Accumulate 30 penalty points and you'll be discharged. All the extra CSAT points you earned will be scrubbed."
"I knew something was up," Tae Man said to Ha-Yun. The girl nodded. "They won't make it easy."
"Then, we'll head to the dormitory," said Lt. Lee.
Ha-Yun turned to Tae Man. "The school's big enough for dorms?"
~~
The school's big enough for dorms. They're using the lower form empty classes. The girls' dorm is next to the boys'. So Ha-Yun could hear the boys' excitement next door. Meanwhile, the girls are unpacking all their makeup and other necessities.
Ha-Yun was watching Aesol, Yoojung, and Nara play Go-Stop. It was fun watching Nara bluff the other two by pretending to not know how to play. She nearly choked on her strawberry milk when the other two caught on.
"Yah yah yah, guys!" called out Hana. "What does 'personal firearms' mean?"
"I don't know," said Soon-Yi.
"Personal guns, you idiot," said Bora, eyes staying on her tablet.
"Isn't it too early for us to get guns?" asked Ha-Yun to the three girls in front of her.
Nara shrugged. "I don't know but I'm kinda excited."
Ha-Yun rolled her eyes. "Of course you are..."
She noticed one of the military leaders assigned to their class walking in. What was her name again? Sergeant... Seo? Ah yes, Sergeant Seo walked in with her hands on her hips. Oh, this meant trouble.
"Attention."
The girls ignored her.
"Attention!"
Now they noticed her.
"Do you think this is a camping trip?"
Soyoon hugged her bag of chips closer to her chest.
"Listen carefully. Any items that you won't need here must be submitted at once." She held up a stuffed teddy bear. "What is this?"
Soon-Yi tried to snatch it from her but the sergeant was faster. "Curling irons, toys, lipsticks!"
The girls hurriedly tried (but failed) to hide all their items as the military woman continued to point out all the banned items. "Foundation, perfume... Scented candle- A scented candle??"
Soyeon blew out the flame and smiled sheepishly at the woman. The woman sighed and continued, "Your foundation, lipstick... yah, you little-"
Yoojung, Nara, Aesol, and Ha-Yun got caught trying to hide the cards. The Banjang quickly covered the cards with a blanket and the four smiled innocently at Sergeant Seo who told them not to move as she moved on to Bora.
"What? Cigarettes?"
Bora rolled her eyes. To be fair, she shouldn't have placed it somewhere obvious.
Sergeant Seo was at her limit. "GIRLS, GET MOVING AT ONCE!"
The girls scurried to get rid of all of their banned items. Ha-Yun worriedly approached the sergeant and asked, "Snacks are allowed right?"
"What snacks?"
"You see, I need to eat chocolate sometimes..." The girl was clearly nervous to talk about her condition.
"Ha-Yun-ah." Yoojung appeared beside her. I'll talk to the sergeant for you."
Ha-Yun sent an appreciative nod to Yoojung and left to help the others.
"Yah, Sunshine!" called Bora. "Can you help hide my cigarettes?"
~~
Class 2 gathered at the school field. Ha-Yun was in between Tae Man and Soo-Chul in the line to get their firearms. "Did you get anything confiscated?" Ha-Yun asked the two.
The two boys shook their heads. "Deokjoong's figurines did though. I swear I saw him tear up," said Soo-Chul. "How about you, Yunnie? Are your chocolates safe?"
The girl nodded. "Yeah, thanks to Yoojung."
"Wahh, there's nothing that girl can't do," awed Tae Man.
Suddenly, Ha-Yun felt a pang of jealousy shooting through her. Her lips formed into a frown.
Tae Man noticed her change of expression. "Yah, Sunny. Are you ok?"
"Hm?" The girl quickly smiled and adjusted her glasses. "I'm fine. Just felt weird for a second."
Tae Man smiled back and ruffled her hair. He turned around just in time as the line was moving. Ha-Yun looked back at her brother who had an annoyed expression on him. "What?" she asked.
Soo-Chul just sighed. "One day you'll understand. Now, hurry up. You're holding up the line."
After getting their guns, the classmates gathered at the benches. Tae Man was helping his best friend tie her hair up. He liked doing it and Ha-Yun had to admit, he did it better than her.
Ha-Yun inspected her own firearm. It felt weird holding it. She never thought she'd hold something with a purpose to kill. Her whole ambition is saving lives not taking them. She could only hope the medical training would come faster. "Is this even safe?" she pondered.
"Is military training itself safe?" Young-Shin said from in front of her. She liked talking to him. He was one of the few rational ones in the class. They'd have gossip sessions about the dumb things their classmates do.
"Good point." The girl sighed. "I'm just worried someone might accidentally shoot someone else."
"Don't worry yourself too much, Sunshine-"
He was interrupted by the sound of five of their classmates, including Wutaek, pointing their guns at Tae Man. Ha-Yun pointed to them and turned to Young-Shin. "My case in point."
Tae Man ran from the group as they started chasing him to the field. Soo-Chul stood up and joined them. "YAH, DO SOO-CHUL COME BACK HERE! I DON'T NEED YOU TO GET SHOT TOO!" yelled Ha-Yun to no avail.
Sergeant Kim Won Bin also came and tried to stop them. He also failed.
"Yah, ahjussi!" called out Soyeon.
"I'M NOT AN AHJUSSI!"
Ha-Yun and Young-Shin snickered at his reaction. It seemed like she hit a critical spot.
"I'm... 21. I'm only two years older than you guys."
Ha-Yun's jaw dropped. "I call bullshit," said Young-Shin. "Ditto," she replied.
"Ahjussi," Soyeon said again.
"Hm?" Sergeant Kim replied before realizing. He took another bullet.
"Can I get a clean one?" asked Soyeon. "This one looks used."
"They're all used," said the sergeant. "Come on down at once!"
A whistle interrupted him. It came from Lt. Lee. He looked pissed. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
Silence.
"ASSEMBLE!"
Everyone reluctantly got up and assembled on the field. Ha-Yun quickly smacked Soo-Chul and Wutaek's head, plus kicked Tae Man's leg because he was too tall for her. "I'll kill you guys later," she angry-whispered.
"Yes, ma'am," the three chorused.
Lt. Lee began to walk between the class, forcing them to separate like the Red Sea. "The firearms that you just received... could save..." he stopped in front of Il-Ha. "Or kill you." He snatched the boy's gun.
"He finally did what I wanted to do. It's dangerous that he's holding a gun. Damn, I need chocolate," thought Ha-Yun.
Lt. Lee continued, "In times of emergency, the only thing you can trust isn't your friend or colleague next to you..." He held up the firearm. "...but your firearm in your hand. So is it OKAY for you... to handle it carelessly?"
The classmates around Ha-Yun hung their heads. She finally let out a breath of relief. That's one less thing to worry about.
"I am asking you guys," commanded Lt. Lee.
"No, it's not okay," chorused the class.
Lt. Lee pointed to his right. "See that goalpost over there?"
Ha-Yun looked at the goalpost. Oh no.
"The first three people."
Ha-Yun looked around if anybody else caught on but everyone was just confused.
"Go."
She noticed Young-Shin adjusting his glasses whilst inching away. "Yah, Jo Young-Shin!" she ran after him as he started sprinting. The rest of the class followed suit.
Somehow, Jang-Soo managed to surpass both of them and got first, Ha-Yun and Young-Shin fell in line behind him. The two of them sent a death glare at the champion.
Jang-Soo shrugged. "You guys are slow."
~~
The day ended with the girls walking dragging themselves back into the dorms. Ha-Yun placed her gun next to her bed and fell face flat on the mattress.
"I'm dying." She heard Yeonju say.
"Me too," said Soyeon. "I'm dying because I'm so smitten by the platoon leader. He's totally my type!"
Ha-Yun laughed in her pillow.
"Yah... what about our handsome classmate, Do Soo-Chul?" asked Yeonju.
That made Ha-Yun sit up. "Yah! Don't talk about my brother like that. It's disgusting."
"Sorry, Sunshine. Yeonju's right," said Hana.
Ha-Yun covered her ears with her pillow. She had enough.
"It's okay, Ha-Yun-ah. He's not mature enough," said Soyeon.
"Thank you for noticing."
Nara nudged her. "Says you. Tae Man's the most immature in our class."
"No he isn't!" denied Ha-Yun. "Sure, he usually is but you guys never take him seriously anyway." She crossed her arms. "I don't even know how he relates to this conversation."
"The reason why you're so defensive about him is why," teased Soyeon.
Ha-Yun's ears turned pink. "I don't get what you mean-"
"Girls, girls, look at my rash!" exclaimed Hana. "This is what happens when I'm in the sun even for a short moment."
Soyeon worriedly checked her own arms. "What about me?"
Ha-Yun gave them her large tube of sunscreen. "I knew you guys would forget to wear it."
The two girls quickly rubbed sunscreen on their arms. "That's not how it works- Nevermind."
"Guys, hand over your rifles. Don't leave them everywhere," said Yoojung.
Ha-Yun, being the only one who heard her, picked up her gun and stored it. Yoojung sent her an appreciative nod and looked back at the rest. "Yah!"
"I swear this is like the fifth time today someone had to scream to grab their attention," mumbled Ha-Yun as she headed back to her bed.
"Do you want to do that race again?" threatened Yoojung. Damn, didn't know she was capable of being scary.
~~
It's nighttime and Ha-Yun forgot where she put her conditioner. She headed into the boys' dorm next door. "Chul-ah, did I pack my conditioner in your bag?"
"Yah, I thought you only packed your chocolates in here." Her brother handed her his bag.
Ha-Yun rummaged through the bag and found the bottle. "Found it!"
Soo-Chul rolled his eyes and snatched back his bag. Wutaek laughed at the siblings' interaction. "Might as well use his whole bag, Ha-Yunnie."
"Yah, Im Wutaek, say your last words," she said before tackling Wutaek down.
The girl was picked up by a pair of familiar arms. "Come on, Sunny. There's no need for violence," said Tae Man as he adjusted her glasses.
Ha-Yun blew her hair out of her face and sent a glare at Wutaek who stuck his tongue out. It's as if she had two brothers.
Then, Il-Ha came running in. "Yah, this is crazy! Gather around."
Everyone formed a circle around him to see the thing on his phone. Ha-Yun rested her chin on Tae Man's shoulder. The video was showing a bunch of soldiers at a zoo who SHOT THE LIONS?!
"What's wrong with them?!" she exclaimed.
"Wahh shibal, isn't this fake?" asked Wutaek.
"Yeah, it's got to be," said Huirak. "Why would soldiers kill animals? This is totally fake."
"No."
Everyone's heads turned to Deok-Joong. "I've seen this before," he said seriously; he climbed on the tables and sat on it. "You see, one of the things that the government does before war breaks out... is getting rid of the animals in zoos. Tigers! Lions! Elephants! They kill such vicious animals."
"But why?" asked Kimchi.
"What he said," Ha-Yun signaled to the Nobita-looking dude.
Duk-Jeong turned to them. "If starving animals escape... they'll eat people. That's why."
"Then what about the animals that aren't vicious?" asked Tae Man.
"Well... they'll be just left there to starve and die."
"That's too cruel," said Ha-Yun. Tae Man nodded.
Wutaek snatched Deok-Joong's bag of chips. "Starve to death, you idiot."
"Yah, let me eat the chips-"
"Hold on." Young-Shin grabbed his shoulder. "If what Deok-Joong is saying is true... it means a war has broken out."
Ha-Yun took a bite of her chocolate and offered it to Tae Man who happily accepted it.
"That's right," said Deok-Joong. "It's either that or it will begin very soon."
Ha-Yun shuddered. Tae Man placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "No way," he said. "Deok-Joongie, who told you that?"
"What?"
"Where did you hear about it?"
"Oh, Machine Gun Parade March. Animation."
Tae Man rolled his eyes. "Aish..."
Everyone walked away from the weeb...
"YOU DESERVE A BEATING, YOU PIECE OF SHIT!"
Tae Man placed him in a headlock. The rest joined him in the abuse. Ha-Yun took Tae Man's neck pillow and hit Deok-Joong's head.
Unbeknownst to them, Lt. Lee walked in upon hearing the commotion. "WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?"
Everyone stopped. Tae Man, Soo-Chul, and Young-Shin immediately hid Ha-Yun behind them. Lt. Lee looked at Young-Hoon.
"Where are you going?"
"I have to study."
"You're not allowed to go off on your own. If you want to study, do it here."
"They're too loud. I can't focus here." He glanced back. "Kwon Il-Ha over there has his cell phone."
Lt. Lee entered the room more and looked straight into Il-Ha's eyes. "You're not allowed to keep your cell phone. Did you not know that?" He held out his hand. "Hand it over."
Il-Ha groaned. "Hurry up," whispered Wutaek. Il-Ha reluctantly handed the phone to their platoon leader.
"You violated the rules for cell phone use. You get three penalty points."
"Okay, sure," said Il-Ha mockingly.
"I swear he needs a good punch of sense knocked in him," thought Ha-Yun.
Lt. Lee turned around and left the room. Il-Ha approached Young-Hoon. "Yah, I'l talk to you later."
"We can talk now."
"Aish, you little piece of-" Il-Ha was just about to punch him when-
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" Lt. Lee appeared at the door again. "Follow me, both of you. And private Hwang Ha-Yun?"
Ha-Yun peeked her head from behind Tae Man's shoulder. "Yes, sir?"
"You better be out of this room by the time night watch starts."
She saluted. "Yes, sir."
~~
Ha-Yun, in fact, stayed a bit longer than she should. Not her fault when Wutaek invited her to a game of Uno, one of the few games the military let them play and only at night. See, she usually wouldn't say she'd actually kill someone. But if it's Wutaek, then yes.
He was on his fifth round of winning. One last card in his hand. "I swear you are cheating, Im Wutaek."
"You just have a skill issue, Ha-Yunnie," he said as he placed his last card. "Uno Game."
"YAH, COME HERE!" she grabbed him by the collar. Then a rumble came that made her lose her grip. Thankfully, Tae Man caught her in time before her face planted on the table.
"Yunnie, are you okay?" asked her brother.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She straightened out her clothes. "What was that?"
"That almost made me jump," said Wutaek.
Tae Man still hadn't loosened his grip around Ha-Yun's waist. "Do you think the three are okay?" he asked referring to Il-Ha, Young-Hoon, and Kimchi.
Soo-Chul coughed upon seeing Tae Man's hand placement. That made the two immediately separate from each other with blush tinting their cheeks.
"I'm sure Lt. Lee is with them," said Ha-Yun as she finished her bar of chocolate. However, she had a bad feeling in her stomach.
~~
Class 3-2, Hwang Ha-Yun
Hi, eomma, appa! Soo-Chul and Tae Man are doing fine. It's hard to get them out of trouble on the first day. They almost got themselves shot. I don't think they should be given guns.
My other classmates are doing well too. Remember Nara? She's loving it. Her grandpa used to be in the army and already taught her how to shoot a gun. It's scary sometimes. Yah, Kimchi! I can see you blushing behind the camera.
(Ha-Yun-ah!)
BAHAHAH!! That was Kimchi. He's our class' clerk. He's the one who records everything that we do. If you forgot how he looks like, just imagine Nobita from Doraemon.
(Hey!)
Okok sorry sorry. Eomma, appa. My friend, Soyeon, has a crush on our commander. She used to love coming over just to talk to oppa but now apparently she likes mature men. Can't judge her though. The lieutenant can be dashing. Kimchi, don't tell anyone I said that.
Oh! And I have this classmate, Young-Hoon. He always studies and never talks to anyone. I tried offering a chocolate to him and he declined. Who declines chocolate?! I pity him though. It's hard being pressured to always be at the top of the school.
And it's even harder when Kwon Il-Ha keeps picking on him. Like what's his deal?
Yoojung was also very nice to me. She helped explain my condition so I could keep my supply of chocolate.
And Tae Mannie-
(Ha-Yun-ah)
Yes?
(All that rambling and you forgot about yourself)
Oh. I'm fine.
